Journey Announce Huge 2023 North American Tour With Toto

Journey and Toto had such a great time touring together in 2022, they're going to do it together again in 2023. The two legendary rock bands will share the stage on the continuation of Journey's 50th anniversary "Freedom Tour."

The new batch of dates start Feb. 4 in Allentown, Pa., keeping the bands on the road through the April 25 finale in Palm Springs, Calif. You can see all of the dates, cities and venues listed below. It should also be noted that a handful of shows are ones that have been rescheduled from earlier this year when the band had to postpone dates due to COVID-19.

Journey guitarist Neal Schon says, "We are all thankful and overwhelmed by the success of our Journey 'Freedom Tour 2022' this year and have added a new run of dates for 2023. We are looking forward to hitting the road again with our very good friends Toto! Come join us for a special evening full of fun and rockin' good memories. See you soon, friends."

Keyboardist Jonathan Cain adds, "Excited to perform for our fans as we tour next year with Toto. The combined hits of both bands represent a couple of decades of excellence that have become a soundtrack for people's lives. The music of Journey along with the music of Toto is an example of 'certain music' during 'uncertain times.'"

Meanwhile, Toto guitarist Steve Lukather chips in, "'On behalf of myself and the band, we are very honored and excited to do this tour with our old and dear friends Journey. Gonna be a great night of music, and as all the guys are lifelong friends... a blast off stage as well."

JOURNEY is continuing to promote its latest album, "Freedom" , which was released in July via BMG . The LP debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Current Rock chart.

The members of JOURNEY celebrated the album's release by kicking off a residency featuring special symphony orchestra performances at the new, state-of-the-art Resorts World Casino in Las Vegas.

As JOURNEY 's legend continues to grow larger and their touring gets bigger, "Freedom" is the band’s first album of new material to be released in eleven years, since 2011's "Eclipse" , and in addition to Schon , along with longtime keyboard player and primary lyricist Cain and Pineda , one more member was recruited for the LP — bassist extraordinaire Randy Jackson , who had played on JOURNEY 's 1986 album "Raised On Radio" .

Inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, JOURNEY has 25 gold and platinum albums, with total sales adding up to over 100 million albums worldwide, earning the band two Diamond Awards with a third on the way for the "Frontiers" album. JOURNEY has also surpassed one billion streams on Spotify .

TOTO: Back together for tour, grateful for new fans

Band touring with journey with show at enmarket arena feb. 8.

By Alan Sculley

Updated February 7, 2023 at 4:25 p.m.

Not long ago – in 2019, to be exact – it looked like Toto’s long and successful run might have really come to an end.

In the time leading up to the split, there were questions about the future involvement of founding member, keyboardist David Paich, and long-time keyboardist Steve Porcaro. Then there was a lawsuit filed by Susan Porcaro-Goings, the widow of drummer and founding member Jeff Porcaro, seeking to recover royalties and other income she believed had not been paid to Porcaro’s estate. The suit created considerable tension between founding guitarist Steve Lukather and Paich and the Porcaro family.

The two sides feuded both publicly and in private, and the anger over the situation was plenty evident in the months leading up to the announcement that Toto was breaking up. The suit was settled in favor of Porcaro-Goings.

Singer Joseph Williams, in a mid-January phone interview, said Toto might have survived without breaking up had the lawsuit not happened, but he suspects the 2019 split was inevitable.

“Aside from the whole legal battle and all of that, Steve Porcaro was inching toward not really wanting to be a touring musician anymore anyway. So that would have come inevitably,” he said. “Also, Dave (Paich) was sort of up and down with his health. Although he’s great now and he’s fine and he still comes out and contributes stuff, touring is not for him anymore, either...But you know, the lawsuit was just sort of salt on a thing that was already happening.”

Williams (who was Toto’s singer from 1986-1989 and 2010 to 2019) and Lukather, meanwhile, saw no reason why they couldn’t form a new lineup and credibly return Toto to active duty.

“Luke (Lukather) and I just looked at each other and said we want to work and we want to play. And the music is still worthy,” Williams said. “We feel we can still do a good job and bring the music out, keep doing it.”

So a reunion was announced in 2020, and after a delay due to the pandemic, Toto returned to touring in 2022, with a mix of headlining dates and a run opening for Journey. The group is continuing down a similar road start 2023, mixing in headlining shows between another run as Journey’s opening act on that band’s winter-spring tour.

The new lineup includes Williams, Lukather (who has also appeared on some 1,500 albums by a who’s who of music artists as one of music’s most in-demand session guitarists), bassist John Pierce, drummer Robert “Sput” Searight, keyboardist/background vocalist Steve Maggiora, keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Warren Ham

“You’re going to hear the big hits that everybody knows from Toto and stuff that’s familiar from the more successful albums, that kind of stuff,” Williams said of Toto’s shows. “And it’s very high energy, rock kind of take on it all. So it’s a lot of fun.”

The 2019 split was not the first time Toto had broken up, or at the least, been on uncertain footing.

Toto was formed in 1977 by high school friends Lukather, Jeff Porcaro (already an acclaimed session drummer), Steve Porcaro and Paich, with singer Bobby Kimball and bassist Dave Hungate completing the original lineup.

The group had immediate success, as the 1978 self-titled debut album spawned the hit single, “Hold The Line,” and went on to top two million copies sold in the United States alone.

The string of successful albums extended into the 1980s, with Toto hitting a peak when the 1982 album, “Toto IV,” became a triple platinum smash behind the hits “Rosanna,” “Africa” and “I Won’t Hold You Back.”

It was against the backdrop of that blockbuster success that issues started to blunt the band’s momentum. In 1983, Hungate left Toto (with another Porcaro brother, Mike, taking the bass slot) and the band fired Kimball, who was dealing with drug issues.

The band pressed on, bringing on Fergie Frederiksen as the new singer and making the 1984 album, “Isolation.” The album failed to achieve anything close to the sales of “Toto IV,” and Frederiksen did not work out as the singer.

This is when Williams, who had known the Lukather and the Porcaros going back to his middle school years, auditioned and was chosen as the next singer in Toto. Williams was thrilled to join Toto, although he was aware the group was feeling the weight of expectations at the time.

“There was pressure, but they never applied direct pressure, like if you don’t deliver we’re f***ed,” Williams said. “It was never anything like that with them. But looking back on it, I can certainly remember sort of the tension between the other five guys, just having the blockbuster album and losing a singer and then the follow-up (album) not being as big. They wanted to keep it going and do it right. They experienced a whole lot of pressure at that time.”

Williams made two albums with Toto – 1986’s “Fahrenheit” and 1988’s “The Seventh One,” but on tour the following year, vocal issues forced him to part ways with the band.

As the decade ended, Toto’s popularity had faded, particularly in the states. The band soldiered on through the 1990s into the early 2000s, with sustained popularity in Europe helping keep the band’s career viable. But along the way, the group suffered tragedies (in 1992, Jeff Porcaro died of heart failure while doing yard work, while Mike Porcaro was forced out of music in 2007 by ALS disease) and had multiple personnel changes. In early 2008, Lukather disbanded the group, saying it no longer felt like Toto.

Ironically, it was Mike Porcaro’s ALS illness that initially put Toto back together. In 2010, Paich called Lukather about doing a short reunion tour to raise funds for Mike’s medical treatments. Lukather agreed, but only if Williams and Steve Porcaro also rejoined. Everyone signed on and soon things evolved into a full reunion.

Over the next eight years, the band toured extensively, made a well-received studio album, “Toto XIV,” as well as several live releases, and then got an unexpected boost in 2018 when Weezer covered the band’s signature hit, “Africa.”

“When we play that song (now), everybody’s up, like it’s a soccer game,” Williams said. “So that’s our calling card and we’re grateful to Weezer for doing it and putting it in the ears of a younger generation, and also (to) the fans of Toto from when those songs were actually on the air, their kids are fans of it.”

Despite the renewed momentum, tensions over the lawsuit and between band members led to the 2019 breakup.

With COVID sidelining all live music, Lukather, Williams and Paich each made solo albums, before regrouping the current edition of Toto and returning to touring last year.

Williams is hoping for another long run with Toto. Lukather has ruled out making new albums as Toto, but the singer isn’t closing the door on anything going forward.

“We’ll see how it evolves. I understand how Luke feels just because if there were to really be a Toto album, we’d have to have the participation from particular people,” Williams said. “The way we’ve been doing it is Luke’s putting out a new album that we did last year. Dave put out an album. These sort of mini-Toto albums, you have to sort of throw them all together and get the (Toto) experience that way. It’s understandable, but like I say, never say never. We’re not old, old men yet. We’re just sub-elderly, so there’s plenty of time to change minds and do stuff.”

Joseph Williams Talks About Toto's 2023 Tour With Journey

Posted January 2023

Photo taken in Los Angeles on 09/04/20.

Throughout the years, Toto’s band lineup has evolved. During the pandemic, Toto lead singer Joseph Williams and bandmate/guitarist Steve Lukather, along with band founder David Paich, have assembled the current lineup consisting of Warren Ham (Kansas, Ringo Starr) on sax, Xavier Taplin (Prince, Queen Latifah) and Steve Maggiora (Marc Broussard, Daniel Powter) on keyboards, John Pierce (Lou Rawls, Cab Calloway, Gladys Knight) on bass, and Sput Searight (God’s Property, Ghost-Note, Snarky Puppy) on drums/percussion. They join Williams and Lukather in making up what can arguably be said is the tightest Toto configuration in many years. The lineup was introduced to fans during a livestream concert in late 2020 and were all warmly received.

Joseph Williams chatted with Boomerocity about the ongoing tour - they replaced an ailing Billy Idol for Journey’s entire Freedom tour. The two bands also now have a “family connection” after Steve Lukather’s son, Trevor, married Journey’s Jonathan Cain’s daughter, Madison, in early December of last year.

Q&A: Neal Schon On The ‘Freedom’ Of Journey, His Friendship With Carlos Santana And Much More

Journey will release Freedom , their first album in 11 years, this Friday (July 8). With the 11-year gap between records, the band's longest break between albums, and the presence of drummer/producer Narada Michael Walden, Freedom , according to guitarist Neal Schon, is a true representation of who Journey is in 2022.

Neal Schon on Journey’s New LP ‘Freedom,’ Ambitious 50th Anniversary Plans

It’s been 11 years since Journey released their last studio record, and for a while it was looking like they’d never get around to making one. “Nobody was really interested in making new music,” Journey founder and guitarist and Neal Schon tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from his California home. “It’s very difficult to get new material played and to get people familiar with it before you go out and play live. Everybody in the band was like, ‘I don’t want to do it.'”

This was an absolutely AWESOME show by TOTO! In 40 years TOTO has only aged visibly; however, TOTO's music has evolved into the 21st century! TOTO not only entertained the audience at THE WARNER THEATRE with Its old hits and new compositions, TOTO wowed the audience with lead guitar solos that would have granted a nod from Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, and from the great Jimmy Hendrix, if he were still with Us. Also, TOTO made certain to include the audience of THE WARNER THEATRE in Its music performace by ordering Us on Our feet to sing & dance! In addition, TOTO gave Us a music history lesson by telling the audience who wrote the music score for the 1970's hit movie, JAWS and who wrote one of Michael Jackson's hit songs! Finally, a new member of TOTO, Xavier, a PRINCE rollover, wowed the audience with a classical music solo ... . Hopefully TOTO will keep Us entertained, in the future, with "50 Trips Around The Sun"!

I attended ToTo's "40 Trips Around The Sun" concert on Monday and was absolutely blown away by the amazing talent of this band. The band played a mix of songs, that they don't usually perform in concert, which included songs from their earlier work, as well as some fan favorites. The guys were on fire, full of energy and always entertaining the audience with their humor and enthusiasm. Loved it when the audience was encouraged to join in on some of the old favorites and when band members Steve Lukather, Joe Williams and Steve Porcaro sat down and reminisced about how certain songs came about and the stories behind their 40 plus year friendships.I would highly recommend seeing this fabulous band and I'm already looking forward to seeing them again!

doreen-sultana’s profile image

I saw them in Dublin 5th April and paid for the VIP-experience as well. The guys weren`t in the best form, but it was amazing seeing them doing their soundcheck, Joseph Williams was chatting to the more curious fans - we were just standing there mesmerized..We got our photos taken with the band, our music sheet signed, got a keyring then we got escorted to the bar, and got back in before the rest of the crowd was let in, so in a way we all paid for having a spot in the front rows too..

They were brilliant! This was the end of the tour, so at some point you could see they`re only human and are tired, but they offered an exceptional music experience to us all! I can`t remember any other band playing this good live; yes, they did get older of course, but they are still masters of their instruments and the new band members fit in perfectly with them!

I could go on praising them, but I won`t.

They were amazing and that is that!!!

Over the past decade,  TOTO  has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career.  No individual statistic exhibits this more than achieving the milestone of over 3.4 billion streams at Spotify alone. The total plays of the band’s collected works across all platforms is now approaching five billion. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone.  The song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Individually and collectively, the band’s family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums.  Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.   They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles while continuing to remain relevant.

Steve Lukather aka Luke shares, “There is a refreshing, optimistic enthusiasm to step in to the future. As long-tenured members of the band, Joe and I want to be on the road continuing to keep the original legacy of the band alive, bringing the music to our multi-generational fan base. In 2023, it was truly humbling to perform in front of close to a million fans. And for 2024, we’ll stage appearances in front of even more across the globe. I’ve spent more than four and a half decades of my life nurturing this legacy, while enabling the music to continually exist in the live concert setting.” Joseph Williams offers, “Luke and I have been through a lot with one another. He’s like a brother to me. Our creative partnership has always enriched our lives. As we look ahead, there is nothing but anticipation to bring everything in our minds to life. I can’t think of anyone else on Earth I’d rather collaborate with. He is a lifelong, loyal and gifted friend and band mate…we’ve become The Dogz of Oz!”

Event Details

The Dogz of Oz World Tour is presented by TOTO co-founder and musical director David Paich. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams on the road are new band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note), and keyboardist/ background vocalist Steve Maggiora (Robert Jon & The Wreck). Keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note) and multi-instrumentalist/ vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) segued over continuing their tenure in the ensemble.

This marks the fifteenth incarnation of the TOTO line-up in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Collectively, TOTO has over two billion streams worldwide on all streaming services. Just last year one of their biggest hits “Africa” went from being a Platinum single to being recently recertified 6X Platinum. The band has found a new generation of fans.

With 40+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time, Michael Jackson’s Thriller , and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture, and are one of the few '70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant while enjoying their multi-generational global fan base.

Limit of (8) eight tickets per purchase.

Toto Lineup Changes: A Complete Guide

Toto were an immediate success story from the moment the strains of their first single, "Hold the Line," hit the airwaves in 1978. They went on to a string of multi-platinum albums and Top 40 hits, but had to deal with constant change behind the scenes. Of course, a lot of bands face personnel changes, but Toto have been through more than many and faced a number of gut-wrenching personal tragedies along the way. Here's a look back at all the major comings and goings they've seen over the years.

1977-82: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / David Hungate / Steve Lukather / Steve Porcaro / Bobby Kimball

Most high school bands don't go anywhere, but Rural Still Life, which gigged around Grant High in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley in the early '70s, is a notable exception: Drummer Jeff Porcaro, keyboard players David Paich and Steve Porcaro, and guitarist Steve Lukather all went on to help form the nucleus of Toto's original lineup, along with session vet David Hungate (who played with Paich and Jeff Porcaro on Boz Scaggs ' Silk Degrees album) on bass and vocalist Bobby Kimball. The group found immediate success with their self-titled debut album, but things really exploded – in more ways than one – after the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning Toto IV in 1982.

1983-84: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / Steve Lukather / Steve Porcaro / Bobby Kimball / Mike Porcaro

As soon as the basic tracks for Toto IV were completed, Hungate abruptly quit and moved to Nashville. He was quickly replaced by Mike Porcaro, who joined the band in time for the album's videos and tour, but they'd soon have to replace an even more distinctive component of what had become a very successful sound.

1984-85: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / Steve Lukather / Steve Porcaro / Mike Porcaro / Fergie Frederiksen

Coming off the biggest record of their career, Toto faced the difficult prospect of putting together a follow-up – a question that became even tougher to answer when Bobby Kimball's struggles with some bad habits caught up with him in the months leading up to the sessions for 1984's Isolation. Stuck for a new singer, the band brought in former Le Roux vocalist Fergie Frederiksen. Unfortunately, Toto's new sound failed to catch on, either on the charts or behind the scenes, and it was soon time to make yet another change.

1986-88: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / Steve Lukather / Steve Porcaro / Mike Porcaro / Joseph Williams

On the hunt for another new singer after Frederiksen's exit following the Isolation tour, the band turned to another childhood friend, Joseph Williams. Williams' elastic tenor, songwriting skill and stage presence complemented Toto perfectly, and although his two records as the group's frontman (1986's Fahrenheit and 1988's The Seventh One ) didn't match the success of Toto IV, things were finally stable again ... for a while, anyway. Steve Porcaro exited as a full-time member following Fahrenheit, although he remained in the wings as a guest on subsequent albums. His absence had an effect on the group's music, then they were thrown for another loop when Williams' own bad habits caught up with him on the Seventh One tour, preventing him from being able to perform consistently and resulting in yet another change at the lead singer position.

1990: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / Steve Lukather / Mike Porcaro / Jean-Michel Byron

Unsure of what to do next, Toto decided to regroup with a greatest-hits record, and when it came time to record a few new songs for the compilation, they yielded to the record company's advice and added South African singer Jean-Michel Byron to the lineup. Although the resulting release, Past to Present 1977-1990, sold well, Byron's more flamboyant style didn't mesh with the rest of the group, and by the end of the tour to support the record, he'd been relegated to more of a background role – then let go completely.

1991-92: David Paich / Jeff Porcaro / Steve Lukather / Mike Porcaro

Unwilling to add yet another lead singer to the mix, Toto decided to carry on as a four-piece for 1992's Kingdom of Desire record, taking things back to basics for a set of harder-edged songs that they all wrote together. Sadly, before they could go on the road to promote the album, Jeff Porcaro passed away, the victim of a heart attack.

1992-97: David Paich / Steve Lukather / Mike Porcaro / Simon Phillips

Faced with touring obligations and a crew to support, the surviving members of Toto made the difficult decision to carry on in the wake of Jeff Porcaro's death, bringing in session vet Simon Phillips to hold down the bottom end for their Kingdom of Desire dates in 1992 and '93. The combination worked so well that they decided to go on, keeping Lukather behind the mic full-time for 1995's Tambu LP.

1998-2003: David Paich / Steve Lukather / Mike Porcaro / Simon Phillips / Bobby Kimball

While assembling some odds and ends for 1998's Toto XX collection, the band decided to reach out to Kimball and Williams and bring them back into the fold for some promotional dates – a combination that worked well enough to prompt Kimball's full-time return for 1999's Mindfields record. With the classic Toto sound largely intact for the first time in 15 years, it looked like the band had come full circle.

2003-08: David Paich / Steve Lukather / Mike Porcaro / Simon Phillips / Bobby Kimball

For a time, Kimball's reunion with Toto seemed to stick; the band released a pair of albums (2003's covers set Through the Looking Glass and 2006's Falling in Between ), ventured out on a series of tours and projected an air of unity. But behind the scenes, trouble was brewing again: Paich's reluctance to tour and Mike Porcaro's tragic diagnosis with Lou Gehrig's disease meant that the band's live lineup slowly became more of a rotating cast than a real band. (Bassists subbing for Porcaro included Greg Phillinganes and Leland Sklar.) Lukather's growing feeling that Toto were no longer Toto finally led him to pull the plug in 2008.

2010-19: David Paich / Steve Lukather / Joseph Williams / Steve Porcaro

It looked like Toto might be done for good after their dissolution in 2008. Then Paich called Lukather in 2010, reaching out to broach the subject of a short tour to help raise money for Mike Porcaro and his family. Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams returned to their old spots, and Toto hit the road once more – then remained there for almost a decade. Drummers included Simon Phillips (2010-14), Keith Carlock (2014-15) and Shannon Forrest (2015-19). Bassists were Nathan East (2010-14); the returning Hungate (2014-15) and Sklar (2016-17); and finally Shem von Schroeck (2017-19). Toto eventually fell apart again amid a health setback for Paich and the weight of new legal action. Dominique "Xavier" Taplin was a late-period fill-in on keyboards.

2020-Present: Steve Lukather / Joseph Williams / David Paich / Steve Maggiora / John Pierce / Robert Searight / Dominique “Xavier” Taplin

Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams revealed another lineup of Toto in 2020, announcing a pandemic-era livestream concert to showcase the new members – as well as two solo albums that also included Paich. Bassist Pierce had earlier collaborated with Huey Lewis , while keyboardist Taplin previously worked with Prince . Lukather said they'd be joined on stage by multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (who'd most recently worked with Lukather in Ringo Starr 's band) and also occasionally by Paich, who remained Toto's musical director. "It's his band," Lukather said. "He started it."
