What currency works in Switzerland ?

Although Euro is widely accepted in Switzerland. But, the preference is for official currency of Switzerland, Swiss Franc. If you don’t have Swiss Franc, the outlets in Switzerland will accept Euro but at a 1:1 conversion rate w.r.t Swiss Franc. However, Swiss Franc is valued slightly lower than Euro. So, to avoid overpayment, it is best to carry Swiss Franc when visiting Switzerland.

What language is spoken in Switzerland ?

English is widely spoken and understood in Switzerland. Perhaps, it is one of the reasons why Switzerland is so popular with Indian travellers. However, German, French and Italian are also spoken in Switzerland.

How to commute in Switzerland ?

Switzerland has a very good public transport system. That includes local buses, EU Rail trains and local trains. Taxis are also available. But are definitely the costliest. Then there are cruises and boats. That provide curated trips and transport through the vast lakes and rivers of Switzerland.

It is best to take a bus pass to explore a town locally in Switzerland. In fact, our hotel in Lucerne provided us a complimentary 3 days city bus pass on the day of our arrival. And local train tickets to visit one place to another in Switzerland, particularly on day trips. Like a trip from Lucerne to Grindelwald. Or, a trip from Lucerne to Interlaken. Then there are special trains like the Glacier Express that takes one through the panormic Swiss Alps regions. And the Top of the Mountain train that takes you to the top of Jungafraugh.

Depending on your trip itinerary, you can decide whether a point to point train ticket better for you. Or a EU Rail pass for Switzerland. If you are visiting multiple countries along with Switzerland, then you can weigh a multi-country EU Rail pass as well. EU Rail passes have good benefits for families, students and backpackers who hop from point to point frequently.

You can also book day trips to several places. Including a tour to the top of Engleberg and mount Titlis. Where you can encounter snow throughout the year.

Where to stay in Switzerland?

While exploring the above locations in Switzerland, you can always base yourself at one location and explore the rest from there on day trips. Or, you can decide to spend a couple of nights each in 2-3 places. Almost all of the above cities and towns provide all kind of accommodations. From backpackers hostels, and airbnbs which are the cheapest to luxury resorts which are the costliest. You can choose from a plethora of accommodation options.

How safe is it to visit Switzerland ?

Switzerland is one of the safest destinations in Europe that I have visited. While petty thefts like pick-pocket etc. are very common in Italy or France. It’s not like that in Switzerland. In fact, during our 4 days trip to Switzerland, we often explored around till late at night. And mostly walked through empty lanes, but never faced any threat what so ever to our safety. Having said that, I would encourage readers to maintain the general precautions and safety norms that you would follow traveling anywhere, particularly international.

When is the best time to visit Switzerland?

Switzerland is an year round destination.

The summer months of June to September offer lush green meadows, voluminous waterfalls, and a pleasant climate that is neither too hot nor too cold.

While the autumn months of October – November and the Sprint season of April-May make for perfect shoulder season to explore Switzerland. The temperature is still cold during this time, but snowfall rarely happens. Most of the valleys are blanketed in green. But, the rush of tourists is still not at the peak. Which means you will encounter less crowd and get better deals at discounted rates.

The winter season, particularly the year end, makes for one of the busiest tourist season in Switzerland. With beautiful Christmas markets, festivities around and fresh snowfall, it is one of the costliest times to visit Switzerland. But definitely provides for a lifelong experience to cherish.

If you can, avoid traveling to Switzerland during European holiday season. As the locals travel around during the holiday in Europe. Like summer holiday for kids. Or, Christmas vacation. Thus the price of accommodation and trips increases during these times. And so does the rush.

For Indians, Switzerland can be considered a cold country. So, Indians traveling to Switzerland, must be better prepared. Particularly if they are not used to nail biting cold. When we visited Switzerland in the month of April, we carried all winter gear with us. Including woollen caps, heavy winter jackets, woollen socks, snow boots, gloves and thermal inner. And we are so glad we did so. As the day we landed in Lucerne, it had just snowed. Bringing the temperature down to 2 degree C that day. Thus, we had to wrap ourselves in layers of clothing before heading out and exploring around.
