Scotty Cameron Timeless Tour Putter Review

The Scotty Cameron Timeless putter is a “Tour only” variation of Scotty’s classic Newport 2 head shape with a few finer touches and elements geared toward the high-end market.

Introduction

Scotty Cameron is synonymous with high-end putter making.  Whether or not everyone agrees with that assessment is a different issue.  What can’t be argued is that Scotty’s brand has made some pretty cool stuff over the past 25 years, and a lot of elite players trust his putters to perform well on the greens.  One of Scotty’s most famous putters in the high-end “Tour” market is the Scotty Cameron Timeless putter.  First introduced in 2008, the Timeless was intended to be an interpretation of the Anser 2 head shape that would be considered classic or “timeless” as the years go by.  The shape has varied a little since its beginnings, but the Timeless continues to be one of the most popular options amongst high-end collectors and Tour players alike.

When you start getting into the world of Scotty Cameron Tour putters, or custom orders, it’s not uncommon to run into a one of a kind putter.  In some cases, they’re nothing special, in other cases they’re extravagant and over the top.  Inevitably there’s enough out there to find something to fit your tastes.  Personally, I’m a big fan of the Timeless pictured in this review.  I like the unique stamping like the Hot Head Harry in the cavity, the look of the hand milling on the face, the black finish with the black shaft, the “Tour Bomb” on the face heel, and the signature Circle T on the sole.  These touches make for a unique putter that some would call a work of art.   I’ll be honest, there are more Scotty Cameron Tour putters that I find unappealing than appealing, but this one really catches my eye.

Additionally, the putter has a thinner face/topline and softer lines in general.  It’s a fairly moderate and classic take on the #2 shape that should be visually appealing to any fan of the shape.

Sound & Feel

Typically, I believe sound & feel is where Scotty Cameron gets smoked by other putter manufacturers, however, it’s a totally different ball game if you’re willing to spend the cash.  I generally find the basic off the rack (OTR) Scotty Cameron putters to be somewhat “blah” in this department.  Not great, not terrible, just very neutral with a big price tag.  For a few more dollars (or less in some cases), you can get a premium putter from other putter makers that sound and feel tour-grade.  I’ve even had experiences with a lot of Tour Cameron putters where I’ve been surprised at the lack of feel.

I specifically targeted the newest Scotty Cameron Timeless because I liked the head shape, but also because I kept reading that the face milling and thinner topline had a much better feel and a really nice “click” to it as opposed to the standard OTR milling or deep milled putters.  To Cameron’s credit, this Timeless delivered.  The feel is responsive, but soft and I would say it has that “TV click” at impact (as in what it sounds like when they putt on TV).  This topline and milling has been showing up in some other Cameron prototypes so I’m optimistic for the larger golfing community that it may make its way into the retail offerings.

Performance

So great, Scotty Cameron can make cool looking putters and accessories, charge a mint for them, and people will keep buying them.  At the end of the day though, real golfers are going to want something that performs for them more than anything else…especially if they’re spending thousands of dollars on a Tour putter or using a putter to make thousands of dollars on Tour.  This is a realistic expectation, and Scotty generally does a good job delivering.

The Timeless tested here performed well in the sense that it was very solid, well balanced, and easy to control through the swing.  There is nothing revolutionary, not that there is supposed to be, about this putter and it gives a you a good reliable roll on the ball .  The key is that the putter is relatively simple with really good feel and response so you just have to focus on putting a good stroke on the ball.

If you’re asking me if this Scotty Cameron Timeless putter makes a compelling case to justify spending a small fortune, I can’t say that I think it’s the best way to go.  Don’t get me wrong, I think this Timeless is absolutely beautiful and a tremendous putter, but there are other equally good of options out there.  That said, if you’re a collector willing to make the investment and you’re looking for something under the Cameron brand that’s a solid piece of craftsmanship as well as a good tool of the trade, then the Timeless is a great option.  Scotty Cameron has made it easier than ever before to acquire his Tour putters with the opening of his Scotty Cameron Gallery in Encinitas, California as well as the retail website where new putters are released to the public every Wednesday.  Be quick because they sell out fast, and you’ll even see a Timeless pop up from time to time.

Interesting review. I live in the UK so will never see any of this sort of high end putter, but would be grateful to know which other makers offer that tour level feel that the OTR Sotty Cameron’s don’t have.

My current favorite alternatives are Black Lab and Xenon. Being in the UK, you may want to look up Scott Readman Concepts . I have yet to roll one of his putters, but he’s a great guy, great skill, and comes with a lot of praise.

Jordan Spieth

Spieth, despite a poor run on the greens in 2018, is widely regarded as one of the very best putter in world golf. His weapon of choice is a Scotty Cameron 009 Prototype which he has been using since the age of 15. He reportedly fancied the 009 after watching both Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy using a similar version.

Justin Thomas

The former world number one uses a Scotty Cameron Futura Circle T X5 with a slant neck. He made a trip to visit Scotty Cameron in 2016 and asked for a compact mallet and he came out with the putter he still uses today.

Brooks Koepka

Koepka's Scotty has been in the bag for both of his US Open victories and features a Teryllium copper insert and his initials stamped on the face. It is called a T10 Select Newport 2 and the T10 stands for Scotty Cameron using Teryllium inserts for 10 years - you may remember that Tiger Woods used a Teryllium insert Scotty Cameron to win the 1997 Masters.

Rickie Fowler

Rickie Fowler's Circle T Newport 2 putter is stamped with his name and 'Cameron' with an orange R.

His model is nearly identical to Woods' after selecting one of his backups on a trip to Scotty Cameron’s HQ.

Fowler got his name stamped into it and put it in the bag in late 2014.

Casey's Scotty has a smiley face, a peace sign and a flower stamped on the back with the words LEX STAR. He also has 'For Paul Use Only' stamped on the sole.

Rafa Cabrera Bello

Hideki's Scotty Cameron Newport has three black circles and is stamped with Hideki and G.S.S, which stands for German Stainless Steel.

The Dane uses a very classic-looking Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Timeless.

Tiger Woods

Tiger has used the same Scotty Cameron putter for most of his career and won 13 of his 14 majors with this model. It currently may not be in the bag, but it could make a return any time.

Tiger said in 2016 that not even his son is allowed to touch his beloved Scotty, “Charlie knows there are two putters he can't touch.

“There's the black one I won with the Teryllium insert. I won the Masters in ’97 with it and this Scotty Cameron. They sit next to each other. Touch any other putter, do anything you want with any other putter. But these putters are off limits."

Scotty Cameron 2001 Limited Edition Terrylium Newport 2 35"

The Newport 2 features a heel/toe weighted head which is longer than the Newport’s, with a more angular, mechanical look. 1/4 toe hang produces the same toe flow as the Newport, but at address the putters are strikingly different. Scotty describes the Newport as bulbous, and the Newport 2 as blockier. The Newport 2 Tei3 also features a sightline for easy alignment. The inlay of the 12-metal alloy Teryllium creates a distinctly soft feel and solid feedback, while an injected elastomer membrane dampens vibration and sound. Both putters have been used to win multiple tournaments around the globe and remain very popular on Tour.

Titleist introduces Scotty Cameron's Xperimental GOLO 6.2 LTD putter, a special release compact mallet crafted with a Chromatic Bronze finish and a tour-proven plumbing neck configuration.

The unique mid-mallet putter design, inspired by wins across the worldwide professional tours, also includes a new chain-link face milling pattern and a custom Full Contact grip.

The Xperimental GOLO 6.2 LTD is a compact mallet based on the Super Select GOLO 6 head shape, which offers high stability and MOI, and is precision-milled from 303 stainless steel. A new chain-link face milling technology, an I-beam-style plumbing neck, a custom Full Contact grip and a model-specific shaft band round out the setup.
