Erode is the headquarter of the Erode district in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is a buzzing city located on the banks of the mighty Bhavani and Cauvery rivers. Before we get into the best tourist places in Erode , let’s find out what makes this city so special.

The next time you’re out shopping for clothes or stocking up the spice cabinet in the kitchen, think of Erode. The city is famous for its thriving textile industry with power loom textile products, readymade clothes, and handloom products. But Erode is far from being a one-hit-wonder specializing in clothes as it is also a hub for manufacturing for bed sheets, cotton sarees, dhotis, lungies, towels, carpets, and wholesale printed fabrics. It’s no wonder that the city is called the “Texvalley of India” or “Loom City of India”.

 We also have to Erode to thank for the wondrous Haldi (turmeric) that adds flavor to our food and lives in general as turmeric is found in abundance across the city!

 1. Government Museum, Erode

The Erode Government Museum is a fantastic center of art and culture in the state of Tamil Nadu. Established in 1987, this museum has grown to become a rich source of artifacts, architecture, and archaeology in the state. With its collection of items growing rapidly, the museum is poised to scale even greater heights soon.

The Government Museum exhibits prominent regional art and traditions. It is well known for artifacts and stone from the Bargur region, as well as inscriptions dating back to the Chola Kingdom. The museum also contains a separate gallery for Tanjore paintings and manuscripts. What also sets this museum apart is its collection of fascinating palm-leaf manuscripts, as well as botanical and zoological specimens.

This treasure house of art is one of the best tourist places in Erode and is open to visitors almost every day. Its doors remain shut only on Fridays and the second Saturday of each month. 

2. Vellode Birds Sanctuary

About 15 km from Erode lies a sanctuary close to the hearts of the people in Erode. The Vellode Birds Sanctuary is home to several migratory birds from across the globe. This oasis of green is situated around a large lake where exotic birds flock to rest and quench their thirst. Common sightings around the sanctuary include pintail ducks, pelicans, cormorants, darters, and teals. To enjoy the best views, we advise you to take a seat at the many observatory towers around the lake.

The sanctuary was established in 1996 and is currently maintained by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. It is a source of immense pride for the people of Erode, who vigilantly protect this beautiful home for their winged friends. Visit the sanctuary from November till March for the best sightings. The sanctuary is a must-visit for nature lovers and is one of the best tourist places in Erode.

3. Karadiyur View Point

There’s nothing like a stunning panoramic view to make your day, and the Karadiyur Viewpoint will never disappoint. The viewpoint is atop a sheer cliff with stunning views of the Mettur Dam and the valley below. The climb to the top is slightly arduous but the scenery from above is worth the effort!

Karadiyur received its name after a significant number of sloth bears were spotted here in the distant past. The sloth bears no longer frequent this area, however, and you can enjoy your walk up to the viewpoint in peace. The distance from the nearest road to the viewpoint is approximately 1 km.

Karadiyur Viewpoint is wonderful for trekkers, photographers, and nature lovers. Chasing the sunrise or sunset – depending on your preference – is one of the best things to do at Karadiyur. People are often found picnicking here as well. Perch yourself on the watchtower constructed by the Department of Forestry for a bird’s eye view.

 4. Bhavanisagar Dam

The Bhavanisagar Dam is the lifeline of the Erode district. This beautiful dam was built post-Independence over the pristine river Bhavani. A multipurpose structure of wonder, the dam stores water for irrigation, supplies drinking water, generates electricity and controls floods and silt formation downstream. It is considered to be one of the largest earthen dams in the country.

It is a much-loved picnic site owing to the abundance of lush lawns and greenery all around. One of the most frequented spots is the beautifully maintained garden with a designated area for children to play. The garden also contains a small channel of water if you’d like to take a boat ride.

5. Thindal Murugan Temple

Behind every prosperous town and its people is the hand of a benevolent deity, or so they say about Erode. Thindal Murugan Temple is devoted to the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Muruga. Lord Murugan is a prominent Tamil God and son of Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is a God deeply revered and has dedicated shrines that span the entire state of Tamil Nadu. Lord Murugan’s power is said to manifest a hundred times more at the Thindal Murugan Temple in Erode than any other place. Located on top of Thindal Malli hillock, the temple is one of the most worshipped places in the city.

It is widely believed that Erode’s wealth and prosperity is a result of Lord Murugan, whose figure in the temple is positioned facing the city. The temple is located at a distance of 6 km from the city center and is one of the best tourist places in Erode.

Thousands of devotees from across the state come to seek blessings at the temple. The temple’s entrance arch contains artwork that features a staggering pantheon depicting Lord Ganesha, Lord Muruga, Goddess Valli, Goddess Devayanani, Lord Muruga’s mount or Vahana Peacock, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathi, Goddess Saraswati, and Goddess Lakshmi.

6. Periamariamman Temple

The Periamariamman Temple is another temple worth visiting while in Erode. Mariamman is a powerful Queen Goddess from Hindu Mythology with her own dynasty and abilities to cure illnesses such as smallpox, chickenpox, or fever. Periamariamman is a goddess for everyone. She is worshipped and adored across caste, class, or religion lines.

The temple was established over a thousand years ago by the Kongu Cholas. It was renovated in 1969 by a group of committed disciples.

 7. Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple

Visit the Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple for its intricate artwork and 500-year-old history. It is a place of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva and considered auspicious by the people of Erode for several reasons. The rays of the sun always fall in front of the temple’s mandaps – a sign of great fortune. A small festival is also celebrated whenever the sun falls on the face of the deity. It is also said that wishes and requests made at the temple always come true.

The Arudra Kabaliswarar Temple is best visited during the festival of Maha Shivaratri which is celebrated with great fervor.

8. Bannari Amman Temple

The Bannari Amman Temple is located at a distance of 75 km from Erode. It is another famous temple dedicated to the mighty Goddess Mariamman. Set in the lap of the Western Ghats, this temple is a beautiful homage to the Goddess. According to folklore and myth, tigers and cows once mingled peacefully on the banks of the river nearby.

9. Brough Church

The Brough Church is one of the oldest churches in the state of Tamil Nadu. The church was founded by an Australian missionary named Antony Watson Broug who made tremendous contributions to the welfare of the people of Erode.

This beautiful building was constructed according to the tenets of Indo-Saracenic architecture. It is said that most of the materials for construction were brought from Karur. Its stunning arches and pillars are made of granite stones, containing expert carvings that are hexagonal in shape. An inscription at the entrance reading ‘Only God’ in both Tamil and Arabic welcomes visitors and devotees to the church.

Erode Cuisine

The food in Erode is a reflection of cuisines from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Dishes are often light and spicy which is common in regions with tropical weather. Rice features majorly on the menu and the food is rich in turmeric – the golden spice found in abundance across the ‘Turmeric City’ of India.

Erode Killu Kari : The Killu Kari is a simple spicy mutton gravy that packs a punch. The dish is made with virtually no masalas and involves only mutton, chili powder, onion, turmeric, ginger garlic paste and oil. Pair this fantastic preparation with a plate of steaming hot rice.

Erode Pallipalayam Chicken: This rich chicken dish is a favorite among the people of Erode. Red chilies and garlic feature prominently in this dish. It’s perfect for a snack or as a side dish.

Reimagined Potrero Yard Tour: Walk the Project Site and Visualize Its Future

Join us this weekend at Potrero Yard to learn how we’re reimagining the site.

You might have heard that we are rebuilding Potrero Yard. Join us for a self-guided tour to learn about the last hundred years of this bus yard and what’s in store next.

On Saturday, Sept. 14, come experience a community walking tour of the Potrero Yard Modernization Project site. This self-guided tour starts at Franklin Square and goes along 17th and Bryant streets.

The Potrero Yard Project is a unique joint development opportunity. This will be the first bus maintenance facility with integrated housing and retail in the United States. At the event, we will share updates on the bus yard development, affordable housing, public art and surrounding transit and safety features.

Light refreshments will be provided to give you energy for all the walking!  

You can also sign up for a bus yard tour led by SFMTA staff. Note: space is limited.

Bus Yard tours offered 

In addition to the community walking tour, we’re also offering two behind-the-scenes tours of our trolley bus yard.

SFMTA staff will lead two tours, one at 1:15 p.m. and one at 2:15 p.m.  These tours are popular, and capacity is limited. To accommodate the anticipated demand, we will offer spots for bus yard tours at the event only (there is no pre-registration for the bus yard tours).

Also, site-visit waivers will be required for bus yard tours. We will have these at the event. Please note that minors (under age 18) must have parental or guardian permission to attend a bus yard tour.

Banned Wagon tour coming to Florida to hand out free banned books. Here's where and when

Banned Books Week is coming and the Banned Wagon is gearing up again to travel the country giving out free books in places where they've been challenged or banned. And yes, they're coming to Florida.

“We’re excited to hit the road again with the Banned Wagon and team up with Unite Against Book Bans , Little Free Library , First Book , and our bookstore and library partners to reach some of the communities most impacted by this critical issue and get more books into the hands of readers of all ages,” said Alyssa Taylor, Director of Brand Marketing, Penguin Random House. “Books help us understand ourselves and the world around us. We all deserve the opportunity to read, think, and learn freely.” 

The Florida stop will be at The Lynx Books in Gainesville on Oct. 10.

Book bans on the rise

The Banned Wagon was created by Penguin Random House last year in response to the stratospheric rise in book challenges and bans in Florida and across the country in the last few years.

Nonprofit organization  PEN America reported a dramatic increase in books removed from school libraries and classrooms, " over 10,000 instances of bans during the full 2023-2024 school year," with Florida and Iowa the worst offenders.

In 2023, PEN America said there were  more books bans in Florida than in any other state , by a wide margin. The number of public school bans in the U.S. under PEN America's definition increased 33% in the 2022-23 school year compared to the previous year, the report said, and over 40% of those happened in Florida .

PEN America defines a banned book as any previously accessible book removed or restricted based on its content and as a result of parental, community or government action or threatened action.

Gov. DeSantis and the state Board of Education define banned books as only those specifically blocked by the state and simply state, when asked, that there are no banned books in Florida and sexually explicit material and instruction are not suitable for classrooms. However, the state has argued in court that it has the right to ban books solely because the government disagrees with them .

According to the American Library Association, there was a 92% increase in requests for book removals at public libraries nationwide in 2023.

Florida facing lawsuits over banned books

Last month, Penguin Random House joined other top publishers Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers and Simon & Schuster, as well as Sourcebooks; The Authors Guild; and critically acclaimed authors Julia Alvarez, Laurie Halse Anderson, John Green, Jodi Picoult and Angie Thomas in a lawsuit against the school boards of Volusia and Orange counties and the Florida State Board of Education over recent laws such as HB 1069 that made it easier to remove books from student access.

There are other lawsuits pending in Escambia and Lake counties. The state is also facing a lawsuit from parents over the difficulty of challenging a book challenge by people who want to keep a book in schools.

On Wednesday, the Nassau County School District agreed to a settlement in a federal lawsuit  over accusations of unconstitutional censorship and will be returning 36 banned books back on library shelves . The books range from classics like "Beloved" by Toni Morrison and "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini to a children's picture book about a same-sex penguin pair.

Why are books being banned?

Among books banned during the 2022-2023 school year:

• 48%:  Percentage of banned books that dealt with violence or physical abuse, including books that include sexual assault
• 42%:  Percentage of banned books that cover topics on health and wellbeing, including mental health, bullying, suicide, substance abuse, sexual wellbeing and puberty
• 33%:  Percentage of books banned that detail sexual experiences between characters
• 30%:  Percentage of banned books that included characters of color and themes of race and racism
• 30%:  Percentage of banned books that included representations of LGBTQ+ identities
• 29%:  Percentage of book bans that include instances or themes of grief and death
• 6%:  Percentage of banned books that included a transgender character

"As with previous reporting, books concerning difficult topics that young people might face have continued to be among the most targeted for suppression during the 2022–23 school year," the report says. "This year’s book bans also disproportionately affect books about the experiences of marginalized identities."

PEN America points out that many of the banned books in their index fit into multiple categories.

As former President Trump struggles with messaging on the issue of abortion, Vice President Harris’ campaign is making a major push focused on the issue.

The Harris campaign is running ads focused on reproductive rights in several key states, and recently launched a bus tour that will make about 50 stops focusing on battleground states between now and Election Day, Nov. 5.

During a recent bus stop in Macon, Ga., Latorya Beasley told her story of sitting in her doctor’s office last year when she got the news that an Alabama Supreme Court decision meant her IVF treatment scheduled for about a week later would have to wait.

“My doctor told me despite preparing for this moment for months, we couldn’t proceed,” Beasley told a few dozen people who gathered at a park in Macon for the event organized by the Harris campaign.

Beasley and her husband were trying for their second child when fertility clinics across Alabama stopped offering the procedure. State lawmakers passed an emergency fix , but not before patients like Beasley lost time and money waiting.

“Donald Trump is responsible for what happened in Alabama and what happened to me,” Beasley said.

And, Beasley added, Georgia voters are no strangers to the impact of the Supreme Court decision that overturned decades of abortion rights precedent just over two years ago. Most abortions are currently illegal in Georgia after about six weeks of pregnancy.

Georgia Rep. Nikema Williams — who also chairs the state Democratic Party — says voters she talks to worry another Trump administration will mean more restrictions.

“They are very concerned about what a Trump administration means for what is left of their reproductive freedom,” she said in an interview with NPR aboard the bus between Macon and Atlanta on Friday. “What I’m hearing is that voters are very motivated by this issue.”

Throughout the campaign, Trump has offered mixed messages on reproductive rights. In a recent interview with NBC, he said Florida’s abortion ban — which, like Georgia’s, prohibits abortion after about six weeks — was too restrictive. He also seemed open to voting for a reproductive rights initiative.

After pushback from anti-abortion groups, Trump later said he’d vote against it.

Pollster Tresa Undem says abortion is a top voting issue for key Democratic constituencies, and Trump knows that.

“The polling’s no secret,” Undem says. “For independent women … pro-choice suburban women, he’s got to peel off some to win.

“There’s a huge gender gap right now. If he doesn’t close that, he loses.”

In a statement, Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated his position that abortion policy should be left to the states. Leavitt said Trump, “strongly supports ensuring women have access to the care they need,” including IVF and contraception.

In the meantime, Democrats are trying to remind voters of what Trump has already said and done, and linking him to policy proposals like the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 , which calls for more restrictions on reproductive healthcare.

On Friday, at another stop along the tour at a barbecue restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff reminded voters that the state has one of the nation’s worst maternal mortality rates, and a shortage of healthcare providers.

Ossoff, who recently led a Senate hearing on Georgia’s abortion ban, told NPR he’s hearing from doctors in the state about patients who’ve been denied abortions while facing medical complications.

“This is personal for Georgia women and it’s impacting the health of Georgia women,” he says.

Sitting with friends at the Atlanta event, Ursula Anderson says they’re all working to help elect Harris.

“We need to remind them, irregardless of what rhetoric Trump is putting out there, there are American women that need support,” Anderson says. “And if they have forgotten because it’s been two years, we need to remind them.”
