At Fort Adams, you’ll step back in time as you tour around this former United States Army post which has been described as a “marvel of military engineering”. Its first commander was Captain John Henry who was instrumental in starting the war of 1812.

Fort Adams State Park
Stop #3 on the Jamestown Newport Ferry is Fort Adams. The Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals (we provide express service to both) are hosted here, however, the fort also provides a visual record of military history from the 1820s to the end of WWII. The walls of the fort, the "listening tunnels," and panoramic views of Narragansett Bay combine to make this an interesting and educational stop. Guided tours are available. Jamestown Newport Ferry departures are from Alofsin Pier, 90 Fort Adams Drive, Fort Adams State Park. There is plenty of parking here! See our FAQ section for more parking information.

We participated in a guided tour of Fort Adams on 06/16/2016 and it was awesome! If you enjoy American history and you are in this area, don't miss visiting this fort. Our guide was informative beyond my expectations, as well as quite entertaining. We were able to see places that had once been living quarters, we learned about the Irish who were hired to build the fort, we learned about the people who served there, and we were invited to walk inside a tunnel that was about four feet high and required flashlights just to see where you were putting your feet. (you didn't have to go inside the tunnel if you didn't want to) We learned what it took to fire off huge cannons, as well as small cannons. The strategic architecture was explained to us, every single nook and cranny served a purpose, every building material used was used for a specific reason and walls that are five feet thick? Wow! It is awesome, in the true sense of the word. The tour was about one hour long. Wear sunscreen or a rain poncho and dress for the weather. The area has a breathtaking view of the water, and there is a Bay Walk at the park. It is a big circle and about 2 miles. There were picnic tables nearby so you can bring your own lunch. I didn't bring a lunch, but I was able to buy a delicious portabello/veggie wrap with seasoned curly fries and cole slaw from The Fork in The Road food truck for only $9.00! If you enjoy history, I would say that a visit to this area of Rhode Island is not complete until you've seen Fort Adams.
We went on the 1 hour tour that leaves from the visitor center. Great tour of large fort and behind the scenes activities such as Captain quarters and tunnels. Very informative guide who paced the tour perfectly.
What a wonderful place! My family took the tour of Fort Adams and Jack, our tour guide, was quite funny and very well informed of the history of Fort Adams and Newport in general. The underground tunnels were my favorite part-kinda scary but SO much fun! Would definitely recommend this tour. The Fort Adams Trust is doing great work keeping this piece of history up and running and appreciated.
The fort was BIG. Our guide was very humorous but failed to answer most of my groups questions. The fort was very Run down and disappointing speaking how the area this is located in has a lot of wealthy individuals. I give this place three stars only because the rich historical background of the fort. Overall the fort was kept very poorly but a lot of information was very important.
Personally, I did not enjoy this tour at all. All you did was go from point-to-point in the open courtyard and listen to your guide talk. You never (at least hardly) get to go in the actual fort or learn about any people who served there. It was mainly technical talk about the fortification itself. Also if you are quastrphobic, DO NOT attend this tour- the only part where you enter the fort is in through a tunnel, completely enclosed- you don't even go through it, you have to circle back out the way you came. It's not worth the ten bucks per person.
I personally enjoyed this tour. I love forts and go to any I can. We had a nice small group on our tour with a funny tour guide.
