travel south carolina myrtle beach

Located in the middle of the Grand Strand that stretches for 60 miles along South Carolina's Atlantic Coast, Myrtle Beach attracts tourists galore with its bustling oceanfront boardwalk, gorgeous beaches, golf courses, nightlife, and more. While summer is a popular time to visit, it's a year-round destination with attractions for every season, travel style, and budget.

Here are 25 fun things to do in Myrtle Beach, from soaring above the sandy strip to embracing your inner pirate on a themed cruise — this is the old stomping ground of Blackbeard and the gang, after all.

See Myrtle Beach from above on the SkyWheel.

Take in miles of Myrtle Beach's skyline and ocean views from the SkyWheel , a 200-foot Ferris wheel with snazzy all-glass, gondola-style boxes that allow 360-degree views from high up. For a VIP experience, you and three friends can lounge on leather seats in your own glass-floored car.

Race along the tracks in go-karts.

Head to The Track for a go-kart ride on the Mighty Myrtle elevated track, where drivers ride up three and a half stories and circle back down with an exciting drop at the end. At the Broadway Grand Prix , seven go-kart tracks range from the Pro Track for experienced drivers to the Family Track for all levels. There's also a Junior Racer and Kids Track so everyone can get behind the wheel for some driving fun.

Root for the home team.

For some local baseball action, check out the Myrtle Beach Pelicans , a Single-A Affiliate team of the Chicago Cubs. Promotions include Fireworks Fridays and a chance for kids ages 12 and under to run the bases after every game.

Soak up the sun at the beach

Myrtle Beach is home to dozens of public beaches that are perfect for sunning, swimming, surfing, wading, and searching for seashells and shark teeth along the shore. Several beaches offer wheelchair access as well as chairs equipped with balloon tires, making them more accessible to everyone.

Explore the shore by Jet Ski or banana boat.

Ride with your group of three to 10 on a banana boat, a yellow banana-shaped tube that's towed through the waves. You can choose from several Myrtle Beach companies, including Downwind Sails and Express Watersports . Rent a Jet Ski to speed through the ocean at your own pace, or join a tour for a guided excursion through the Intracoastal Waterway's tributaries for sightseeing and fun. Companies such as Island Adventure Watersports and Express Watersports offer rentals and tours.

Go on a guided kayak tour.

Take a guided kayak tour through Myrtle Beach's streams and backwaters to experience the unique environments and wildlife of the area, including the Waccamaw River, marshes, and local islands. Tours are offered by J & L Kayakin g and Great Escapes Kayak Expeditions , among other locally owned companies.

Keep an eye out for dolphins.

Go on a cruise to see dolphins swimming alongside the boat, or spend a day deep-sea fishing with one of several Myrtle Beach companies such as Voyager or Hurricane Fleet . You can also soar over the area on a parasail adventure for a bird's-eye view of Myrtle Beach and the Atlantic. Feel the breeze, spot some dolphins, and enjoy a thrilling experience with Downwind Sails, Express Watersports, or New Wave Watersports .

Hit the water on your own.

Take out a pontoon boat, stand-up paddleboard, canoe, or scuba gear from one of the many Myrtle Beach rental companies to explore the area at your own pace. There are plenty of places to go on the river as well as along the coast.

Play classic arcade games.

Kids of all ages (or anyone who considers themselves to be young at heart) will have a blast at the  Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum . It costs $12 per hour to access to the interactive museum's 26 vintage pinball machines from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. You won't have to worry about digging for loose change or purchasing tokens — once inside, all machines are set to free play, so you can spend every minute just enjoying the game.

Tee off at top golf courses.

More than 90 public, private, and semi-private golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area make it a favorite destination for golf fans from all over. Consider the variety of price ranges, landscapes, and courses designed by famed golf course architects like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Robert Trent Jones, every golfer can find the perfect place to play.

Even if you're not traveling with kids, it's a great date-night activity or a fun way to strike up a little friendly competition. Some of the most popular courses include the Atlantis-themed Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf , Neverland-inspired Captain Hook's Adventure Golf , and the indoor-outdoor Cancun Lagoon .

Visit a world-class art museum.

Once you've had your fill of the beach, head inside to check out the impressive permanent collection of Southern art, antique maps, historical prints, and crafts at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum . Don't forget to stop by the gift shop to pick up souvenirs in the form of books, jewelry, stationery, or home decor.

Listen to live music for free.

There's nothing like stumbling upon a band or musician putting on a great show, especially when it's free. That's what you get during the Music on Main Concert Series on Main Street, running perpendicular to Ocean Boulevard, in North Myrtle Beach. The series takes place on Thursdays from June through September.

Get hands-on at the Children's Museum.

Traveling with little ones? Head to the EdVenture Children’s Museum , where kids can get in on the action with immersive exhibits showing them how things work at a supermarket, at the beach (geared toward ages three and under), in a cafe, and at the doctor's and dentist's office. Other displays focus on STEM topics such as space and flight, while a few more take a closer look at auto mechanics, motor skills and balance, performing arts, construction, art, magnets, and wind tunnels.

Admire plants and animals at Brookgreen Gardens.

Brookgreen Garden s is home to 9,127 acres featuring stunning botanical gardens, an extensive collection of American sculptures, the Lowcountry Zoo, and the Lowcountry History and Wildlife Preserve. Whether you make time to visit just one or several of these attractions, you're in for a real treat.

Take in the area's natural beauty.

Luckily for nature lovers, the area is home to two state parks that are both worth visiting. Make time for Myrtle Beach State Park , an oceanfront destination with nature trails, bike paths, equestrian trails, a fishing pier, and several picnic areas. Located at the southern end of Myrtle Beach, there's also Huntington Beach State Park , which has 2,500 acres of hiking trails, marshes, bays, and opportunities for overnight camping.

Sip the day away at a nearby winery.

Duplin Winery is a great place to sample a variety of sweet vino while enjoying cheese, crackers, and a virtual tour of its Rose Hill, North Carolina, home base. As part of the tour, you'll have a chance to hand-bottle your own wine to take home. Nearby, Carolina Vineyards Winery , located near the Intracoastal Waterway in North Myrtle Beach, offers a variety of tastings, including frozen wine during the summer.

Sample local beers at a microbrewery.

New South Brewing , a microbrewery in Myrtle Beach that's been open since 1998, serves ales, lagers, IPAs, and seasonal specialties such as Oktoberfest and Dark Star Porter. Meanwhile, Tidal Creek Brewhouse offers not just small-batch craft beers but also freshly brewed coffee and Lowcountry food favorites like fried green tomatoes and shrimp and grits.

Geek out over classic cars.

Classic car enthusiasts can geek out over all their favorite models at the  Wheels of Yesteryear Vintage Automobile Museum . Open in Myrtle Beach since 2009, the museum showcases a collection of more than 150 American-made cars and trucks that husband-and-wife founders Paul and Carol Cummings have been assembling over decades. Visit the gift shop to pick up nostalgic die-cast collectible versions of your favorite vehicles, plus shirts and other car-centric souvenirs.

Learn about wildlife at Ripley's Aquarium.

Courtesy of Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach

Don't miss  Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach ; not only is it a wonderful place to view sea creatures like stingrays up close, but also sloths and other South American critters. Check the website before you go to book additional experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours of the Marine Science Center, penguin encounters, glass-bottom boat rides, sleepover parties, or the ever-popular Breakfast With a Mermaid event.

Embrace your inner pirate.

Get ready to don cheesy pirate gear and practice your best "Arrrrrrr!" Myrtle Beach — and the entire Carolina coast, for that matter — was once a haven for Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and heaps of other infamous pirates back in the day, so why not get in on some family-friendly pirate action on a themed cruise while you're in town? Blackbeard’s Pirate Cruise  and  Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach each offer kid-friendly sailings that might include temporary pirate tattoos, costumes for the kiddos, stories about those who once sailed through these waters, or a treasure-seeking adventure that ends in an epic water cannon battle.

Cruise the Intracoastal Waterway on a riverboat.

If you'd like to enjoy a boat ride that's a little less pirate-y, you can always opt to cruise the Intracoastal Waterway on the  Barefoot Queen riverboat instead. She features several indoor and outdoor decks to spread out on, with onboard narration and entertainment, as well as a fully stocked bar to enjoy while you take in views of the surrounding area. Scenic daytime and lunch cruises are 1.5 hours long, while dinner cruises last two hours.

Master the waves at Kokopelli Surf Camp.

Pick up a new beach hobby at Kokopelli Surf Camp , which runs group and private lessons designed for every level, whether you're just starting out or want to brush up on your skills. Three-day camp sessions are also offered for kids, while surfboard rentals are available if you'd rather do your own thing.

Experience early-1900s farm life.

Part of the Horry County Museum, the L.W. Paul Living History Farm  lets you see what it was like to live in the area as a farmer between 1900 and 1955. Demonstrations and presentations change seasonally according to what's happening on the farm. Guided tours are free and last about an hour, so it's worth checking out if you're suddenly craving a little time away from the beach.

Tour a popular local distillery.

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Twelve 33 Distillery for a chance to see how some of your favorite spirits are created "from grain to glass," and how locally sourced ingredients make the craft cocktails served here really stand out. Among the distillery's specialties are several types of rye whiskey, spiced rum, vodka, and gin with ties to South Carolina's prohibition era. Pro tip: book the VIP tour to enjoy a special tasting flight in the distillery's secret speakeasy.

Say the words " beach trip " to half a dozen people, and they are likely to summon distinct vacation visions. Some are sleepy and sun-soaked, while others are packed with outdoor adventure or shopping excursions. That's why it's key to pick a place that can satisfy everyone's wish list. As the anchor of a 60-mile stretch of Grand Strand waterfront communities, each with its own unique appeal, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is perfectly positioned to cater to just about any crew's ideal coastal escape.

There's plenty to do in any season, but the best months to visit Myrtle Beach are June through August for perfect beach weather. Visit in the fall to avoid the crowds and still find lots to do. Innovative epicurean experiences? Check. Fresh seafood? Check. Boutique-shopping districts loaded with charm? Check. Lush landscaped gardens, moonlit kayak tours, and live music spilling out into the streets? Check, check, and check. Visitors can plan a fun, affordable trip to Myrtle Beach. For cheaper rates, look for rooms and specials in the off-season.

With so much variety offered, all you need to bring to ensure a good time is plenty of SPF—and a solid game plan for your vacation. Check out these things to do for a perfect Myrtle Beach trip.

Wake Up To Ocean Views

Book your group into a beachside escape.

If having a central location to slather on sunscreen together in the morning (or sip nightcaps in your pajamas at day's end) is key for your group, book a stay at the Island Vista Resort, where the multi-room suites sleep up to 10, and feature amenities such as full kitchens, cozy living and dining areas, ocean-view balconies, and laundry machines. It's billed as "the only oceanfront hotel for nearly a mile in either direction." So, with big buffers separating the resort's wide, clean beach from the nearest hotels, it feels fully removed from the rowdy crowds and miniature golf madness of the city's more densely developed areas.

islandvista.com , 6000 North Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Indulge At A Four-Star, Oceanfront Resort

Two miles northeast of the Island Vista Resort, there's also Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes, which is the gold standard of the Grand Strand. Here, the lack of large-group lodging options is offset by luxe, recently refreshed rooms and a quiet, full-service spa. Pair beach views with spa experiences, and you're setting yourself up for a fantastic vacation. No matter where you stay, be sure to pack the essentials: lightweight layers, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of SPF. The town's vibe is casual, but you'll want to bring a few nicer outfits for nights out.

8400 Costa Verde Drive, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572

Tour The Beach Bar Scene

Hit the boardwalk bars.

Start things off on a high (make that high-energy) note with a cruise through the open-air bars clustered near the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, with their big people-watching patios and party-time vibes. You'll find all the daiquiris and piña coladas you could hope for, but a trip here isn't all sugary frozen drinks and oversized fishbowls. It's worth veering slightly off the main drag for something with a little more personality and polish too.

Between Second Avenue North and 15th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC

Duck Into A Speakeasy For Lowcountry Cocktails

The Prohibition-themed Strong Waters Craft Cocktails & Kitchen, which flies fittingly under the radar, rotates a seasonal menu of local-leaning microbrews but always keeps two in-house, barrel-aged cocktails on tap, along with a Bartender's Choice option for indecisive—or adventurous—tipplers. They say it's "a speakeasy where the drinks are as strong as the current in the ocean," so come prepared for a good time. It's also a hub for live music and fantastic sandwiches and burgers.

Raise The Roof With Sunset Views

Closer to the water, find RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar, which is owned by the folks behind Wicked Tuna in Murrells Inlet. With over 500 seats and 17,000 sprawling square feet, RipTydz has room for everyone. It raises the (beach) bar with a menu of super-fresh seafood (including raw bar selections and seafood towers), a sprawling rooftop restaurant that transforms into a club, and a top-notch perch for sunsets.

riptydz.com , 1210 North Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Taste Handmade Beers And Spirits

Tap into local brews.

When it's time to enjoy a sip of a local brew, make your way to Grand Strand Brewing Company, which opened in 2021 and is the city's exciting destination for craft beers, sampling (which you can do indoors and out), a taproom turning out handmade beers, and tasty eats from an on-site kitchen that invites local chefs to cook and share. You'll find a bit of everything here, including sours, pilsners, and stouts with local flair.

grandstrandbrewing.com , 819 North Kings Highway Unit 101, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Hang At A Beer Garden

Head to Barefoot Landing to check out Crooked Hammock Brewery, which draws beer and food lovers from near and far with its restaurant and beer garden. It's a family-friendly hangout with craft beers; ribs, cornbread, and giant pretzels on the menu; seating both indoors and out; fire pits for cool nights; hammocks for hanging out; and places to play for kids and adults. (Corn hole, anyone?)

Sip Locally Sourced Spirits

For even more fun, there's also Twelve 33 Distillery, a craft production distillery that sources locally and offers tours and tastings. Check out the recent releases to find out what delicious spirits they're cooking up on the coast. All of the grains and other ingredients they use to make their handcrafted spirits come from local farms. In addition to tastings, you can also book guided tours to learn about each part of the distilling process.

twelve33distillery.com , 593 East Highway 90, Little River, SC 29566

Try A Wine Tasting

There's wine to be found on this slice of coast too. Sidle up to Duplin Winery in North Myrtle Beach. Located near Barefoot Landing, here you can sip and listen to live music, or enjoy a wine tasting with friends where you'll sample 10 different wines. In the area, there are also tasting rooms at La Belle Amie Vineyard, Carolina Vineyards Winery, and Wine Therapy .

Choose From Diverse Lowcountry Dining Spots

Dine on the daily catch.

In the evenings, locals descend on the lively joints along Main Creek in Murrells Inlet. Many of these spots employ their own fleets of fishing boats to deliver the daily catch. Don't miss Dead Dog Saloon, which is beloved for its live music and seafood; The Claw House, a New England-style lobster house and raw bar; and Drunken Jack's, long known for its fried seafood platter and often legendary wait times.

Weigh All The Waterfront Options

Speaking of waterfront dining, there's no shortage of options, attitudes, and dress codes to choose from, and you and your traveling companions can easily divide your time between fancier environs and flip-flop–friendly joints. For brunch, there's 60-year-old Myrtle Beach mainstay the Sea Captain's House, a 1930s home with a grassy lawn that backs up to the sand. Regulars go for Crab Cakes Benedict and the restaurant's signature She Crab Soup.

Find Your Favorite Flavors

Chef-owned 42nd Street Bar and Grill serves apps, salads, seafood, steaks, and more with Asian and European flavors, from shrimp gyoza to beef and mushroom Wellington. Another favorite located on the Grand Strand is the Opa Opa Taverna & Bakery, which can be found in the Grand Dunes village shops. Don't miss the Greek classics on the menu, including baklava, spanakopita, and tiropita.

Explore Sustainable Eateries

There are worthy exceptions to the always-eat-on-the-water rule. Hook & Barrel in Myrtle Beach is a new sustainable-seafood restaurant from cookbook author Heidi Vukov. The eco-friendly restaurant uses local produce to craft coastal dishes. On the menu, you'll find she crab soup as well as smoked shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and cioppino.

hookandbarrelrestaurant.com , 8014 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572

Try Elevated Fare

There's also the locally sourced fare at Pawleys Island favorite Rustic Table from co-owners Anne Hardee and chef Adam Kirby. Be sure to order a tomato sandwich with clam chowder or a salad with pecan-encrusted flounder, or try one of their signature items, like shrimp 'n' grits—with creamed corn grits, shrimp, sausage, tomatoes, parsley, butter, white wine, and lemon.

rustictable.com , 10683 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, SC 29585

Travel For Farm-To-Table Cuisine

If time permits during your trip, travel 20 miles to Little River to dine on farm-to-table cuisine (which is paired with an expertly curated wine list) at The Parson's Table. It's housed in a converted 1885 church featuring a mix of salvaged elements from other decommissioned houses of worship across the South.

parsonstable.com , 4305 McCorsley Avenue, Little River, SC 29566

Gawk At Goats Before Dinner

For a pre-dinner diversion, stroll along the half-mile MarshWalk and have a look at the goats and peacocks inhabiting tiny Goat Island offshore. Then, for something different, enjoy the elevated Italian eatery Costa Coastal Kitchen & Bar just down from Murrells Inlet's busy strip of restaurants and bars.

Shop Local Art, Design, And Food Gifts

Bring home southern-made goodies.

You can stock up on Southern-made snacks (from brands like Birmingham's Merry Cheese Crisps and New Orleans' Love, Cookie) while browsing at the original Southern Living store in The Market Common. In our namesake store, you'll find plenty of products to help you celebrate the South, including home decor, gifts, and garden items. You'll find more than 30 shops and boutiques (as well as several restaurants) in The Market Common retail hub, so there's no better place to shop the day away.

marketcommonmb.com , 3064 Howard Avenue, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

Shop Stunning Swimwear From A Carolina Designer

Visitors can hardly hurl a seashell in this town without hitting one of those ubiquitous beach-gear emporiums that are bursting at the seams with cheap T-shirts and fidget spinners. But there are more compelling options here too. Start with a swimwear upgrade from Tara Grinna, a line of fit-focused suits, separates, and cover-ups sold at namesake storefronts in North Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island. Visit the flagship store in North Myrtle Beach.

Relax With A Locally Made Souvenir

Top tip: Leave time and room in your suitcase for a hand-knotted cotton rope hammock (designed way back in 1889) from The Hammock Shops Village and The Original Hammock Shop in Pawleys Island. The cotton rope hammocks come in a variety of colors and are sure to help you bring a bit of coastal tranquility back home with you. You'll relish this relaxing reminder of your trip every time you kick back in it.

Go On An Art Walk

If you're ready to tackle a curated arts tour, get a free pass to the Myrtle Beach Arts & Gallery Trail, which is broken down into three different trails to choose from and offers stops at galleries, artisan shops, museums, public art attractions, and more along the way.

Dedicate A Day To Music, Food, And Fun

Sample the region’s best at a food festival.

The Little River ShrimpFest happens in October, and it brings jazz music and a shrimp cook-off to the shores of the Little River. Local waterfront restaurants serve up fresh local shrimp and seafood, and art and crafts vendors, live music, and entertainers create a festive atmosphere.

Learn About Local Delicacies

The Loris Bog Off happens each year on the third Saturday in October, and it celebrates chicken bog , a local delicacy that combines rice, chicken, sausage, and pepper into a dish you won't soon forget. The food celebrations at this fest happen alongside live music and fireworks.

Find An Activity Everyone Will Love

Take a spin with a view.

While you're on the main drag, keep an eye out for the 187-foot-high SkyWheel to light up at dusk. When you're ready for a change of pace from the go-go energy of Myrtle Beach proper, pile everyone in the car and head south to Huntington Beach State Park. It's a great place to break up a day of sunbathing and shell collecting. Explore its uncrowded beaches with nature walks and see if you can spot wildlife like sandhill cranes, roseate spoonbills, and even the occasional alligator. Myrtle Beach offers family activities, nature excursions, great seafood – and plenty of stretches of sand and surf, too © Getty Images

Wide, sandy and sun-drenched, the Grand Strand in South Carolina is a 60-mile stretch of captivating coastline.

This region offers 14 communities, each with its own personality – with Myrtle Beach as the charismatic center of gravity. Beachgoers have their pick of inviting shores, from crowded and lively to remote and quiet. Nature lovers are also spoiled for choice: salt marshes teem with wildlife, trails ribbon through maritime forests and botanical gardens bloom year-round. Fresh seafood abounds everywhere. And family fun, from putt-putt to zip lines, is a hallmark of the region.

If you only have a few days (and with the caveat that some attractions are only open in warmer months), here are some of the top things to do in and around Myrtle Beach.

Spend a day on the beach

Myrtle Beach is the anchor of the Grand Strand, and it’s the best bet for active beachgoers. Head here for water sports, oceanfront dining, Boardwalk shenanigans and summer festivals. Surfside Beach hugs the coast just south of Myrtle Beach. Also known as Family Beach, this two-mile stretch of sand has lifeguards, a gently sloping coastline and wacky golf-cart parades. It has also been recognized for its autism-friendly businesses .

Myrtle Beach State Park and Huntington Beach State Park offer a more low-key experience as well as opportunities for hiking, camping and wildlife watching. Further south, Litchfield Beach earns loyal fans for its crowd-free coastline and relaxing small-town vibe. Neighbor Pawleys Island encourages all-day relaxing with its empty white-sand beaches, protective dunes and famous roped hammocks.

Ride the SkyWheel

This soaring landmark is no mere Ferris wheel. Rising 187ft above the downtown Boardwalk, the  SkyWheel offers 10-to-15-minute “flights” in 42 temperature-controlled gondolas, which each hold up to six passengers. Most of the gondolas are fully accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and scooters, while more than one million LED lights wow onlookers during the dynamic evening light show.

Savor fresh seafood in Murrells Inlet

Twenty-five minutes south of Myrtle Beach, this inviting fishing village is known as the seafood capital of South Carolina. Fishing boats pull up beside waterfront restaurants in Murrells Inlet, where chefs await the day’s catch. Linked by the half-mile wooden MarshWalk, popular seafood restaurants overlook weathered piers and lush marshlands, and offer a prime choice for a lovely evening out. One sure bet for fresh seafood? Head to Wicked Tuna , a hook-to-plate seafood restaurant that overlooks the inlet and employs its own fleet of fishing boats.

Kayak the coast

Paddlers seeking wildlife, coastal beauty and solitude have numerous options within a short drive of downtown Myrtle Beach. Salt marshes hug the coast at Murrells Inlet, where kayak tours float past pelicans, egrets, sea turtles and dolphins. Other trips explore the swampy wonders of the Waccamaw River and its moss-draped cypress trees, or drift past lonely islands and empty beaches strewn with shells and sand dollars. Most guided trips are great for families and last a half-day, with many trips offered year-round.

Go shag dancing at Fat Harold’s

Shag dancing (known as “shagging” in these parts) is the official dance of South Carolina. According to lore, this easy-going swing dance akin to a slow jitterbug was birthed in North Myrtle Beach in the 1940s and 1950s, with doo-wop, old-time R&B and beach music providing the irresistible soundtrack. You can watch – and join in on – all the moves at Fat Harold’s Beach Club and surrounding dance clubs most nights of the week. Lessons at Fat Harold’s are $10 on Monday nights – no partner needed – and free every other Tuesday night.

Marvel at a Night of a Thousand Candles

The most enchanting place in the Palmetto State in winter is  Brookgreen Gardens , 16 miles south of Myrtle Beach. The Nights of a Thousand Candles take place from late November through the early New Year: after sunset, a tunnel of live oaks, all wrapped in strands of white lights, funnels visitors from the entrance to an illuminated wonderland of flowers, shrubs and trees. Statues of gods and goddesses cast mysterious shadows across fountains and pools in the twinkling darkness. These events sell out, so buy a ticket before your visit.

Horseback ride on the beach...and beyond

Horseback riding is allowed on designated sections of the Grand Strand from the third Saturday in November through the end of February. This means you can gallop – or perhaps gently walk – along the surf in winter. Most guided trips run 90 minutes and cost about $75;  Grand Strand Horseback Riding leads outings from Myrtle Beach State Park . In warmer months, when the beaches are off-limits to horses, many companies guide riders across inland farms, where you might see cows and canals instead of sand and surf.

A fence in the dunes along the Boardwalk of Myrtle Beach at dusk, with the SkyWheel and apartment buildings in the distance

Stroll the Boardwalk

Anchored by the SkyWheel, the 1.2-mile Boardwalk is crammed with arcade games, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, volleyball courts, beachwear stores and busy hotels. The all-American scene is not to be missed in summer, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Officially dubbed the Oceanfront Boardwalk & Promenade, the walkway stretches from the 2nd Ave pier area to 14th Ave North. The family-owned Gay Dolphin gift shop, open continuously for 75 years, hawks shells, t-shirts and souvenirs. RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar serves up cocktails with ocean views.

Bird-watch at Huntington Beach State Park

Scan the skies and salt marshes for great egrets, blue herrings and even bald eagles at Huntington Beach State Park , a favorite stopover for migrating birds and one of the top birding spots in the Southeast. Birdwatchers have spotted more than 350 species of birds at this 2500-acre park, which is home to maritime forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, shrub thickets, beaches and dunes. Pick up a bird checklist then stroll the marsh-flanked Causeway for the best viewing. The new Nature Center also has a birding area.

Seek out high-octane adventures for families

Smell the popcorn, hear the screams and feel the ocean breeze on the Swamp Fox, a classic wooden roller coaster that careens around Family Kingdom , an oceanfront amusement park packed tight with 35 rides. Funplex Myrtle Beach , which opened in 2021 at the northern end of the Boardwalk, has seven rides including the Sky Velocity, which drops riders six stories. At the beach, several family members can float above the ocean at once on parasailing trips – reaching heights of up to 500ft. Below, jet skis bounce across the waves with banana boats in tow as families cling tight.

Wander through WonderWorks

This eye-catching, upside-down building is the hub of this three-in-one attraction , an immersive adventure destination that is one part children’s museum, one part amusement park and one part science lab. Various interactive “wonder zones” bring scientific concepts to life, while the outdoor Soar + Explore area boosts the adrenaline factor with a zip line and three-level ropes course. WonderWorks is not unique to Myrtle Beach, but its mix of interactive physical and cerebral activities provides a fun alternative to a day of lying out in the sun.

A woman puts at a mini-golf course next to a palm tree and fiberglass elephant in Myrtle Beach

Putt-putt with pirates and dinosaurs

Rome has ruins. London has pubs. And Myrtle Beach has mini-golf courses, with at last count more than 50 of them puttin’ their stuff (sorry). Some sources even say that the Grand Strand has more courses per square mile than any place in the country. What makes these 18-hole courses memorable? Their exuberant embrace of wacky themes. Pirate ships, dinosaur kingdoms, jungle wonderlands and Hawaiian backdrops have entertained families since the first course was built here in 1930. No ifs, ands, or...putts about it.

Immerse yourself in Gullah culture

Even after the brutal Middle Passage, enslaved workers on coastal South Carolina plantations retained many traditions from their West African homelands. Delve into this rich history, memorable customs and beautiful crafts in the coastal village of Georgetown, home to the Gullah Museum and the Rice Museum.

Zenobia Harper offers tours exploring Gullah culture several days per week at Hopsewee Plantation, a former rice-growing estate on the North Santee River. Workshops here teach sweetgrass basket weaving, a Gullah tradition since the 1700s. Brookgreen Gardens, built on the site of four former rice plantations, offers a weekly Gullah program (Jan–Nov). The Lowcountry Trail here spotlights the lives of those who owned and worked the fields.

Hit up Broadway on the Beach

With its unabashed embrace of shiny corporate excess, Broadway at the Beach may not offer an afternoon of Lowcountry authenticity. But this sprawling shopping, dining and entertainment complex – which surrounds a 23-acre lake – knows how to bring the rah-rah. Highlights include a lake-crossing zip line, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park carousel, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, dueling pianos at Crocodile Rocks and Ripley’s Aquarium, where penguins and the jellyfish beckon.

Sip craft beer

The outdoor beer garden at Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach embraces backyard fun with hammocks, firepits, bocce ball, cornhole and a playground. Grand Strand Brewing Co, which opened in 2021, fills a two-story building in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Enjoy live music and outdoor seating (including Adirondack chairs and picnic tables) as you sip an Airbrush Hazy IPA. Serious beer samplers will want to make the one-mile drive inland for the Dirty Myrtle DIPA at hyperlocal brewery New South Brewery, around since 1998.

Why Go To Myrtle Beach

The clean beaches are the main draw in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but there's more to this vacation hot spot than its 60 miles of brown sand. One of the most popular East Coast family vacation destinations, Myrtle Beach boasts amusement parks that offer everything from water slides to roller coasters to race tracks. While the shopaholics of the family spend time at the outlet malls, golfers of all skill levels can flock to one of the area's more than 100 courses, and then the whole family can enjoy pirate or medieval-inspired revues during dinner. When you're not on the beach, attractions like  Ripley's Aquarium  and the  Broadway Grand Prix  can entertain family members of all ages. Plus, there's a minor league baseball team for sports lovers. In short, Myrtle Beach is the ideal destination for budget-minded families looking for a multitude of entertainment options on a budget.

Myrtle Beach Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach is from June to August when the weather is just right for enjoying the beach. You can expect some afternoon rain showers during this time of year (especially July), and keep in mind that the region's hurricane season will last from June through November. You'll also experience some warm temperatures and slightly cheaper rates if you visit March through May, but you may have to contend with spring breakers from area colleges crowding the beach and nearby hotels. Autumn ushers in room bargains and cooler temperatures that range from the high 70s to the mid-40s. During winter, chilly temperatures introduce the lowest rates (and zero crowds), but be aware that some area attractions and restaurants will be closed or offer reduced hours.

What You Need to Know

Look out for jellyfish The marine pest is common in these waters. If you're stung, wash the afflicted area with saltwater and either see a lifeguard or head to the hospital immediately.

Southern hospitality is alive and well The people here are laid-back and friendly, peppering their conversation with polite niceties like "sir" or "ma'am."

But Myrtle also knows how to party Myrtle Beach is a spring break destination for college kids, so keep that in mind when scheduling your trip.

How to Save Money in Myrtle Beach

Rent a home  If hotel rates are too pricey, consider reserving a vacation rental. Not only is it a cost-effective option for large groups, but with your own kitchen, you have an affordable dining-in option too.

Visit the tourism board  Myrtle Beach's Tourism Board has coupons for all sorts of attractions, restaurants, shopping and more. There are visitors' centers in the bus terminal, in the airport and on North Oak Street. Visit its website for more information.

Visit in the offseason  Hotel rates jump sky-high in summer. Consider visiting in the fall or even the winter. You'll be able to find more cheap hotel rates this time of year, and a bevy of holiday events will keep you entertained if the beach is too cold.

What to Eat

Chain restaurants – including Hard Rock Café, Senor Frog's and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville – are all over Myrtle Beach. If you are looking for a diverse and innovative foodie scene, this is not where you want to go. But one thing the city doesn't lack is variety. A large selection of restaurants is located along Kings Highway (U.S. Highway 17), so much so that it's often referred to as "Restaurant Row." A decent number of locally owned eateries can also be found, with the predominant cuisine theme being seafood. Mr. Fish , Captain George's Seafood Restaurant and Sea Captain's House are all well-reviewed spots.

You'll also be able to find some more upscale spots; local and tourist favorites include  Sole Italian Restaurant , Fire & Smoke and  Aspen Grille .

Getting Around Myrtle Beach

The best way to get around Myrtle Beach is by car. If you're going to spend most of your time around the beachfront hotels, you can easily manage on foot. However, a car is handy for traveling farther distances since the bus is your only public transportation option. Car rental agencies are located just beyond the baggage claim area in Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), and plenty of taxis and hotel shuttle services are lined up outside the terminal.

If you're visiting Myrtle Beach in the peak summer season, make sure to claim a spot on the sand early in the day.

Secondly, if you want to escape some of the bigger crowds here, head to North Myrtle Beach where you will find a selection of excellent restaurants, great live music and accommodation that suits larger traveling parties and families.

The Best Time of Year to Visit Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach is a beautiful year-round destination that has something to offer during any season. Summer, predictably, is the peak season and also the best time to visit Myrtle Beach. All the town’s major attractions will operate at full steam, while the perfect temperatures that hover between 85f and 95f (29c-35c) allow you to make use of the amazing beaches to the full extent.

Another great time to head to Myrtle Beach is during the Fall. Between September and November you will enjoy a more temperate experience, great for playing on one of the many fantastic local golf courses or spending your morning strolling the Boardwalk. You can also expect to see smaller crowds and better room rates.

Day 1: Beaches and Fun Times

After arriving in Myrtle Beach and dumping your luggage in the hotel room, you may have the urge to go straight to the beach. Your instincts are spot on. Aside from the early risers catching a blooming Atlantic Ocean sunrise, the beaches here don’t fill out until midday. So begin your Myrtle Beach adventure with some morning sun and a quick dip into the fresh ocean water.

Now that you are awake and invigorated, it is time to take a stroll along the waterfront. The Myrtle Beach boardwalk is a 1.2 mile (1.9km) path between the beautiful white sand beaches and the sprawling coastal town.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

The boardwalk will lead you all the way down to the 2 nd Avenue Pier with non-stop views along the way. From the pier, you can venture high into the sky thanks to the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel , although we recommend returning at night and watching the town’s nightlife light up under the starry sky.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Now that you have caught a glimpse of all the fun and action to be had in Myrtle Beach, it is time to take things up a notch. Along the Boardwalk, you will have passed many attractions along with an odd number of Ripley’s buildings, including their Aquarium, Haunted Adventure house, the Mirror Maze, Movie Theater and the classic Believe it or Not.

The choice is yours, but you can get into the spirit of things by also heading to the Fun Plaza Family Fun Center for all sorts of family-friendly fun. To get the heart racing a little more, trade the arcade for the Free Fall Thrill Park where you will find the Sling Shot and Skyscraper rides among other terrifyingly fun experiences.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

By the time that’s all done, you will probably be searching for a break and a less exhilarating experience. If that’s the case, it is time to explore a Myrtle Beach institution. The Gay Dolphin Gift Cove is cherished by the local community, having enjoyed an amazing run since the store opened its doors way back in 1946.

Still owned and operated by the same family, come inside for a sprawling gift shop full of souvenirs, home decor and frankly, anything you can imagine. Over time, it has grown beyond just a shop. Now you can take photos alongside lifesize yetis, Egyptian guardians, pirates and even Elvis. If there is one place to enjoy simply being a tourist, this is it.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

After dinner, it is time to boogie. Myrtle Beach is well-known for its eclectic nightlife, with a brilliant mix of modern electronic music and 80s beach tunes. It isn’t an easy combo to master, but Myrtle Beach has it locked down tight.

Once the sun is down, follow the locals to Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, where you can complete a night of uniquely South Carolinian bar hopping. If you want to spend the entire night at a single club, then it has to be Fat Harold’s Beach Club. There’s no better place in Myrtle Beach to learn and dance the iconic Carolina Shag.

Fat Harold’s interior design and spacious dancefloor will have you feeling like you jumped back a few decades. A night here is as laid-back as it full of hip-swinging. For more shag-dancing opportunities, head down the road for OD Arcade & Lounge, or make your way to Duck’s Beach Club for entertaining cover bands that play into the early hours.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Alternatively

Trade the Skywheel views for an even higher glimpse of Myrtle Beach with the help of Helicopter Adventures . Their two-mile introductory flight is a budget-friendly journey high above the town for only $20 per person. Even better, you can simply rock up at their helicopter pad, select a tour and off you go!

Your pilot will take you over the Grand Strand where you will get a bird’s-eye view of Myrtle Beach’s best attractions, the many lush golf courses and the pristine Atlantic coast.

Where to Eat on Day One

For lunch, check out Big Mike’s Soul Food for home-style southern cooking that will give you the perfect insight into the delicious South Carolinian cuisine. Rated as one of the best restaurants in Myrtle Beach by the Travel Channel, grab yourself a midday fried fish sandwich, or the shrimp basket, served with fries, hushpuppies and coleslaw for less than $10.

As you venture down to north Myrtle Beach for some exciting nightlife, begin your evening with dinner at Harold’s On the Ocean, aka HOTO’s. Don’t expect world-class food, but you can expect a world-class good time at this classic Myrtle Beach restaurant. Looking over the Atlantic Ocean, you will have nonstop, gorgeous views of the water and the sounds of the live band mix in perfectly with the crashing waves. Chow down on hearty pub fare, get your legs moving on the dancefloor, or kickback with a frozen boozy drink.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Day 2: Shopping, Nature and History

After a big night on the town, we wouldn’t blame you for having a nice sleep-in. After all, this is a vacation. But if you don’t feel like relaxing and enjoying a chill morning on the beach, then there is plenty still to do around Myrtle Beach. So head out down to Broadway at the Beach.

Broadway at the Beach is an exciting inland entertainment area that is the most popular tourist destination in Myrtle Beach. This is because Broadway has something for everyone, regardless of age. Spanning 350-acres, you will find endless shopping and entertainment, including a zipline ride that will take you over the sprawling lake.

For the kids, check out WonderWorks which offers over a hundred incredible exhibits that will blow your mind, not the mention the extreme motion theater and the glow-in-the-dark ropes course.

Everyone can explore the Hollywood Wax Museum, featuring all your favorite stars along with a mirror maze and your chance to walk through a zombie-infested lab.

Finish up with a spot of competition on the go-kart track, well one of seven go kart tracks at the Broadway Grand Prix. Afterwards celebrate and commiserate at one of the 20 on-site restaurants.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Once lunch is squared away, it is time to take a short half-hour drive south along the beautiful coast. Today you are headed for the stunning and isolated Huntington Beach.

Featuring endless white sands, quieter spots to tan under the South Carolina sun and endless opportunities to body surf, Huntington Beach is the perfect mini-escape from Myrtle Beach.

You could spend all day relaxing on the pristine sands of Huntington Beach however there is some amazing bird-watching yet to be completed. While you may not see many people on the beach itself, you will find find travelers wandering along the nearby boardwalks, enjoying one of the best spots in the state for sighting egrets and herons.

A fun and simple hike to complete is the Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail, an easy 1.2 mile (2km) boardwalk stroll. The path takes you through beautiful coastal forests and alongside an inland lake before ending at a viewing deck where binoculars will come in handy.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Before leaving Huntington Beach, why not explore a castle built during the Great Depression? The impressive Atalaya Castle , built with the influence of Spanish and Moorish architecture, was later used as a barracks during the Second World War. After being donated to the State of Carolina, you can now take tours of this National Landmark and during the month of September, the castle is home to an annual art festival.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Instead of going all the way down to Huntington Beach, stop shortly prior in Murrell’s Inlet. This popular seafood haven is home to several fishing charters that will take you out into the Atlantic or along the Gulf Stream and share in the town’s thriving passion.

One of the best ocean charters in town is Outlaw Fishing Charters , who provide all the goods from their modern 24ft (7.3m) center console, including rods, bait, and a slew of saltwater fishing licenses. Not to mention their heavy-duty navigation system that will have you fishing at all the hottest spots in the region.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Where to Eat on Day Two in Myrtle Beach

Begin your first morning in Myrtle Beach with a bang and make your way to Croissants Bistro and Bakery. The coffee you will find here is hailed among local residents as the best in town, and it is hard to disagree.

But to fuel up for a day of fun, you’re going to have to tuck into their scrumptious breakfast pancakes, or smashed avocado on thick sourdough bread. If you’re feeling extra peckish, go for broke and order their specialty, the Bananas Foster French Toast, which will have you ready to jump all over town.

Trying to pick between all the restaurants at Broadway at the Beach is a tricky exercise. But for a fun atmosphere, delicious meals and some excellent craft beers, then you have to dine in at The Grumpy Monk. Come for their tropical storm sushi rolls and stick around for The Monk’s interesting take on the Philly Cheesesteak.

For dinner on day two, make your way down to the Marsh Walk at Murrell’s Inlet, the Seafood Capital of the South. If you can time your drive to enjoy the sunset as it hits the coast, lighting up the ocean and many small towns along the way. Along the Marsh Walk you will have the choice of up to seven waterfront eateries. You can choose to enjoy a night of delicious Italian cuisine at Costa’s, which perfectly pairs fresh ocean catch with their envious selection of wines. But because three days in Myrtle Beach is all about kicking back and enjoying the evening sky, walk down to the Hot Fish Club where you can enjoy the creekfront and some casual live music as you enjoy your fare.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

Day 3: Kayaking and Shopping

To begin the morning in Myrtle Beach, it is time to jump in a kayak and explore places such as Waites Island or the iconic Waccamaw River. With the help of the best eco-tourism company in Myrtle Beach, J&L Kayaking , you can have a professional guide all to yourself as you explore these unmatched areas.

Their kayaking tours are designed for all skill levels. You can decide on an easy float or paddle to Waites Island where you can go far into the backwater creeks for a wilderness experience. Or use the current to make your way downstream along the Waccamaw River.

Tours last from 2 hours up to a half day adventure, leaving you time to see even more of Myrtle Beach once you are back on land.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

After a fun morning of kayaking, it is time to end your adventure to Myrtle Beach with a little hit of shopping. If you’re like me, you simply can’t go home without some signature souvenirs and some beautiful reminders of your vacation.

The spot to hit up is Barefoot Landing. While not explicitly a shopping center, as it is just as popular for dining and entertainment options, there is an abundance of shops selling unique goods, crafts and second-hand trinkets. If it is coming up to the holiday season, Barefoot Landing puts on a show with their giant Christmas tree and The Christmas Mouse, a store for all of your holiday needs.

travel south carolina myrtle beach

For a quintessential South Carolina morning or afternoon, go fishing on the Cherry Grove Pier. Either use your own rod or make use of the rental shops on the pier where you can rent rods, crab nets and purchase as much bait and tackle as needed.

Then find a good, comfortable spot on the pier and try your hand at landing a King Mackerel or a Bluefish. All the while, enjoy the sights and sounds of Myrtle Beach.

Where to Eat on Day Three in Myrtle Beach

With just one breakfast left in town, you may as well make it a good one. So wander down to Blueberry’s Grill for a mouthwatering breakfast featuring all of your favorite early morning eats, with unique twists and plenty of flavor. With spacious indoor and outdoor dining along with gluten-free and vegan options, Blueberry’s Grill will have you fueled up and ready for some kayaking.

For a simple and beautiful last meal in Myrtle Beach, stop on by the Crooked Hammock Brewery. The wonderful setup is like someone created a brewery in your backyard without telling you. With large colorful hammocks strewn to the trees and repurposed barrels used as dining tables, this fantastic outdoor space is the perfect place for a beer, live music, a light lunch, and their famous giant pretzel.

Stick around for bocce and corn hole under the sun, while the kids take their adventures to the extensive playground.

Final Thoughts

You could easily spend a week or two further exploring Myrtle Beach’s exciting restaurant scene, fun and down-to-earth nightlife and enjoying yet another day on the beach.

But three days here will be a fun-packed break from normal life, giving you the opportunity to shop ‘til you drop, explore untouched natural areas or work up the courage to enter yet another haunted house.

Myrtle Beach is a destination that has a little something for everyone and once you go, we are sure you’ll soon be back.

Myrtle Beach Road Trip: Mileage and Estimated Driving Times

John Coletti  / Getty Images

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with 60 miles of spectacular sandy beaches is home to over a hundred golf courses and is an affordable family destination—especially if you're driving. It's within doable road trip distance from quite a few cities across the United States beyond the Southeast.

If you are planning to drive to Myrtle Beach, this listing of approximate mileage and the estimated driving time between Myrtle Beach and U.S. cities will help you with your travel planning.

Riddhish Chakraborty / Getty Images

Cities in the Southeast are within easy driving distance to Myrtle Beach, especially those in the Carolinas.

  • Atlanta Straight Mileage: 313 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 360 miles Estimated Driving Time: 6 hours
  • Columbia, South Carolina Straight Mileage: 122 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 150 miles Estimated Driving Time: 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • Raleigh, North Carolina Straight Mileage: 149 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 195 miles Estimated Driving Time: 3 hours and 20 minutes
  • Richmond, Virginia Straight Mileage: 281 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 340 miles Estimated Driving Time: 5 hours and 40 minutes

Cities in the Mid-South, like Louisville, Memphis, and Nashville, are quite a bit farther away and likely mean a long one-day or two-short-days road trip.

  • Charleston, West Virginia Straight Mileage: 358 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 440 miles Estimated Driving Time: 8 hours
  • Louisville, Kentucky Straight Mileage: 494 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 650 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 40 minutes
  • Memphis, Tennessee Straight Mileage: 632 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 745 miles Estimated Driving Time: 12 hours and 5 minutes
  • Nashville, Tennessee Straight Mileage: 476 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 585 miles Estimated Driving Time: 9 hours and 35 minutes
  • Washington Straight Mileage: 377 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 450 miles Estimated Driving Time: 7 hours and 25 minutes

Gavin Hellier / Photographer's Choice RF / Getty Images

Residents of the landlocked Midwest yearn for the beach and ocean waves, and no matter which coast they choose, it's a long drive. Driving from most cities in the Midwest means a solid two-day trip behind the wheel. Pack the car and enjoy the scenery.

  • Chicago Straight Mileage: 740 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 945 miles Estimated Driving Time: 15 hours and 15 minutes
  • Columbus, Ohio Straight Mileage: 490 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 600 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 35 minutes
  • Indianapolis Straight Mileage: 581 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 765 miles Estimated Driving Time: 12 hours and 20 minutes
  • St. Louis Straight Mileage: 715 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 890 miles Estimated Driving Time: 14 hours and 15 minutes

Northeasterners have plenty of beaches nearby, but in the wintertime, they are not appealing. If you are jonesing for some sun and surf in February, Myrtle Beach is a long one-day drive away. If you don't like driving more than eight hours in one stretch, you can make it a leisurely two-day trip.

  • New York Straight Mileage: 558 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 685 miles Estimated Driving Time: 11 hours and 20 minutes
  • Pittsburgh Straight Mileage: 473 miles Approximate Driving Mileage: 625 miles Estimated Driving Time: 10 hours and 45 minutes

A Disability-Friendly Weekend Guide to Myrtle Beach

Myrtle beach is committed to inclusivity—including accessible hotels, restaurants, attractions, and even beaches..

Myrtle Beach strives to make its beaches accessible to all.

After years of focusing on accessibility for travelers with physical and mental disabilities, Myrtle Beach’s commitment shows from the minute visitors touch down at the airport. Staff who receive special training welcome disabled visitors and help with anything they and their families might need. There’s also a Quiet Room for travelers with special needs to rest, de-stress, and grab a bite to eat. Plus, therapy dogs are on hand for stress relief via the P.E.T.S. (Pups Easing Travel Stress) program.

Around town, accessible hotels and restaurants welcome travelers with disabilities. There are even complimentary beach-going wheelchairs and accessible beach access points for those who need them. And when it comes time to draft a detailed trip itinerary, the abundance of inclusive attractions and activities makes it easy. From the thrilling heights and stunning views of the SkyWheel observation wheel to immersing yourself in nature in gardens and state parks, Myrtle Beach and the neighboring resort towns along the Grand Strand’s beaches are filled with new and improved amenities for the disabled.

Accessible beaches and hotels in Myrtle Beach

The resort towns along the stunning Grand Strand beach corridor want their stretches of sand to be accessible to all travelers, including those with disabilities. If a beach-going wheelchair is what you need, consider a stay in North Myrtle Beach —which also offers adaptive surfing—or Surfside Beach . Both locations are quieter than Myrtle Beach’s main drag and offer the wheelchairs free of charge. (To reserve a wheelchair, contact Beach Services Warehouse in North Myrtle Beach or Surfside Beach Police Services in Surfside Beach.)

Accessible beach access points dot all the beaches along the 60-mile Grand Strand. Arrive early or choose the early-evening golden hour to avoid the largest crowds. To take in the majestic Atlantic Ocean without getting sandy, head straight to Myrtle Beach State Park for incredible ocean views and a wheelchair-accessible pier.

In Myrtle Beach, finding the best views of the Atlantic is an inclusive activity—many beachfront hotels are accessible or certified autism-friendly resorts. To spread out in a rental home, Dunes Realty Vacation Rentals can help you find your dream vacation home with all of the accessibility amenities you need.

North Beach Resort & Villas is one of many places in Myrtle Beach to stay with services for disabled travelers.

The Grande Cayman Resort boasts wheelchair-accessible beach access right in front of the property, plus a portable pool lift and visual emergency alarms for the hearing impaired. North Beach Resort & Villas —where accommodations range from high-rise rooms with a view to luxury villas with kitchens—also has visual emergency alarms and a portable pool lift.

Inclusive attractions in Myrtle Beach

Wheelchair-accessible and sensory-friendly attractions abound in the resort town of Myrtle Beach, an inclusivity pioneer. If your trip is a relaxing getaway, put Brookgreen Gardens , the nation’s first public sculpture gardens, on your agenda. Wheelchair- and sensory-friendly, the gardens offer art and gorgeous landscapes, plus onsite dining and picnic areas. There are also wheelchair-accessible fishing piers.

For more intense thrills, take a ride on the SkyWheel observation wheel. The 187-foot-high wheel has wheelchair accessibility and sensory-friendly accommodations. Or check out the shark tunnel and penguins at Ripley’s Aquarium , which is also wheelchair- and sensory-inclusive.

Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf and the Hollywood Wax Museum Entertainment Center also welcome disabled guests. Stellar options for live entertainment include a show at The Carolina Opry Theater or the Alabama Theatre and booking a ticket to the Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament or Legends in Concert —all of which are wheelchair accessible. There’s even a sensory-friendly show, Original Motown Tribute Show , as well as a movie theater, Grand 14 at Market Common, with the same designation.

Myrtle Beach’s family-friendly, inclusive restaurants

Dining out in Myrtle Beach is for everyone, thanks to an ever-expanding, autism-friendly initiative. (Pro tip: get the Autism Travel Club’s app to help with planning and join the club for discounts.) Many restaurants have wheelchair-accessible entrances, spacious dining rooms, and specially trained staff. All-ages hotspots such as LuLu’s , Johnny D’s Waffles and Benedicts , Hamburger Joe’s , and Carolina Seafood & Steak are sensory-friendly and wheelchair-accessible.
