Service history and disposition

Initially believed lost during her first assignment, Voyager became famous throughout the Federation for her 70,000 light-year journey back to Federation space across the Delta Quadrant under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway . After seven years in that distant part of the galaxy , Voyager reached Earth through the use of a Borg transwarp conduit. ( VOY episodes : " Caretaker ", " Endgame "; WizKids module : Tactics )

Four years later, Voyager returned to the Delta Quadrant to lead the Federation task force known as Project Full Circle . ( VOY novel : Full Circle )

Construction history

USS Voyager departing Deep Space 9

Voyager departs DS9.

Construction began on the USS Voyager in the late 2360s at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards along with her sister-ships, USS Intrepid , USS Bellerophon and USS Pathfinder , under the direction of Admiral Patterson . Voyager was the second ship of the class built after the Intrepid herself, and in early 2371, Voyager was launched, and command was handed over to Captain Kathryn Janeway . ( VOY episode : " Relativity ", ST website : StarTrek.com )

Following the launching ceremony, Captain Janeway took Voyager on a shakedown cruise to the area bordering the Demilitarized Zone . During the voyage, the starship's bio-neural gel packs malfunctioned and left Voyager stranded in space. The USS Hood , under Robert DeSoto , rushed to Voyager 's aid, and she was towed back to Utopia Planitia for repairs. ( VOY - The Brave and the Bold, Book Two novella : The Third Artifact )

Service history

Caretaker wave

The Caretaker's wave transporting Voyager across the galaxy.

After undergoing repairs at Utopia Planitia, Voyager proceeded to Deep Space 9 to await its first mission: to travel into the Badlands to locate Chakotay and his Maquis crew, along with Lieutenant Tuvok , who was operating undercover. Once the final crew complement arrived, the Voyager departed DS9 and headed into the Badlands. Shortly after entering the Badlands, Voyager was transported over 70,000 light years across the galaxy to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker , a member of the Nacene species. ( VOY episode & novelization : Caretaker )

At the beginning of their journey home, Voyager unknowingly entered the territory of the Dresh , a fiercely territorial race that uses mines to guard its borders. When Captain Janeway was injured in a collision with a Dresh mine, Commander Chakotay took command to save the ship. However, his attempts to save Voyager wee hindered by the fact that Tuvok had disabled his command codes. ( VOY short story : " Command Code ")

When Voyager suffered damage, Neelix directed them to a spaceship graveyard on the planet Alcawell . When Lieutenant Torres, Ensign Kim, and Neelix entered a spaceship to investigate they were transported across time. They were apprehended by the Alcawellians and charged with temporal violations. ( VOY novel : The Escape )

After detecting a tetryon beam emission from a derelict First Federation vessel in the Kuriyar Cluster , Voyager was drawn into a centuries-old war between the Hachai and the P'nir . The intervention of Captain Janeway meant that both parties united in a war against the Federation. ( VOY novel : Ragnarok )

While negotiating for the coordinates of known wormholes, Voyager was attacked by the Cartel freighter , Kapon , and her main computer processor was stolen. With Voyager on emergency power, Captain Janeway was determined to get the stolen technology back. ( VOY novel : Violations )

Endgame - Voy in sphere

Voyager inside Borg Sphere 634. ( TNG video game : Elite Force II )

Stardate 54973.4 : Ten years after Voyager 's return to the Alpha Quadrant after 23 years in the Delta Quadrant, Admiral Janeway plots to alter the course of history and bring her starship home via a Borg transwarp hub . After journeying to 2377, she soon comes face-to-face with the Borg Queen as the crew of Voyager commit themselves to the most dangerous mission of their lives - and the greatest opportunity they have ever had of returning home. ( VOY episode & novelization : Endgame )

After Voyager arrived in the Alpha Quadrant in December , Captain Janeway and Starfleet Command agreed to return to Earth slowly. Starfleet dispatched counselors to help Voyager's crew adjust to the welcome but sudden return home. Among them were Counselor Deanna Troi , who had come to know Voyager's crew through her friend and longtime colleague Reginald Barclay .

Although there was a major reception, Voyager's crew was made unwelcome by a Federation still reeling from the ravaging Dominion War . Voyager was docked at McKinley Station , laid open and stripped of its custom and futuristic technology. When a Borg virus broke out on Earth, gradually assimilating the population, Voyager was blamed and its former Borg crewmembers Seven of Nine and Cadet Icheb incarcerated. At the same time, the Doctor was imprisoned at the same facility for his connections to Oliver Baines ' HoloRevolution . ( VOY novel : Homecoming )

In January , Vice Admiral Janeway reassembled her former senior officers to free Seven, Icheb and the Doctor, and to uncover the conspiracy behind the Borg virus. They received help from Lieutenant Commander Data of the USS Enterprise -E , and grudgingly joined forces with Oliver Baines. They received support from "Peregrine", who sent them vital information. Peregrine was none other than Lieutenant Kim's girlfriend Libby Webber , a secret Starfleet Intelligence operative. After the Voyager officers broke out their fellow crew people, they boarded the gutted Voyager , took over the ship from a Starfleet security crew to allow Icheb and Seven to regenerate. Meanwhile, Data, the Doctor and their new-found ally, Doctor Jarem Kaz , worked on the Borg virus. Admiral Kenneth Montgomery , in charge of Project Full Circle , boarded Voyager . Instead of taking Janeway and her officers into custody, they joined forces and infiltrated Starfleet Covert Ops headquarters, where Admiral Brenna Covington was transforming into a new Borg Queen . She was stopped and the virus cured. The public did not learn of the incident.

Shortly after, Janeway had successfully lobbied for Chakotay to become the next captain of Voyager . ( VOY novel : The Farther Shore )

In July , Voyager was officially re-launched and sent on its first mission under Captain Chakotay. Starfleet Command had denied Tom Paris to become first officer and instead posted Commander Andrew Ellis on Voyager . Voyager was to return a group of semi-independent colonists to Loran II , a home they had been forced to abandon during the Dominion War. Chakotay's sister Sekaya was retrieved from Deep Space 6 to support the colonists as spiritual adviser .

Harry Kim became the second-in-command and took over security/tactical from Lieutenant Commander Tuvok, who had left Voyager to teach at Starfleet Academy. Lieutenant Lyssa Campbell , who had been with Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, inherited Kim's position at ops, while several Alpha Quadrant veterans joined the crew as well. Chakotay was pleased to have a Huanni counselor, Lieutenant Astall . Jarem Kaz succeeded the Doctor as chief medical officer, and HoloRevolution victim Akolo Tare was named senior flight controller while Devi Patel became senior science officer.

Andrew Ellis, a Changeling in disguise, had arranged for Voyager to journey to Loran II, where acquitted war criminal Crell Moset conducted experiments on the population left behind during the war. The Changeling killed the real Andrew Ellis and impersonated Chakotay after he and his sister had been captured. ( VOY - Spirit Walk novel : Old Wounds )

Admiral Janeway was in command of Voyager during the return of the rogue Vulcan scientist T'Uerell and her Borg forces. Janeway confronted T'Uerell alongside Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise -E . As Picard took command of the fleet to oppose T'Uerell, Janeway left, assuring him that she would be back with some friends.

After T'Uerell's failed attack on Bajor and Deep Space 9 , Janeway's reinforcements joined with Picard's fleet, and that of the Klingons and the Romulans . The combined fleet pursued T'Uerell to a nebula where they finally defeated her. ( ST video game : Legacy )

During the Borg Invasion of 2381 , Voyager was one of the vessels able to be reallocated to an allied fleet to reinforce the position of the USS Enterprise -E and the USS Aventine at the Azure Nebula . While the Enterprise and Aventine traversed subspace tunnels , hoping to find the Borg launching area, Captain Chakotay and Voyager remained in command of the fleet, overseeing efforts to open other tunnels. However, from an allied fleet of over 300, Voyager was the only ship to survive the Borg invasion force of over 7000 Borg cubes from the subspace tunnel within the nebula, and was able to emit a distress call to Starfleet Command . ( ST - Destiny novel : Mere Mortals )

While the ship was intact, it had its port warp nacelle sheared from its pylon by a grazing collision with a Borg Cube and was drifting in space. The Voyager crew were attempting to salvage material from the battle site to rebuild the nacelle before joining the USS Enterprise -E and the USS Aventine on their search for the source of the Borg invasion. ( VOY novel : Full Circle , ST - Destiny novel : Lost Souls )

After the Borg Invasion of 2381, Voyager was refitted with a quantum slipstream drive and made the flagship of Project Full Circle . Chakotay resigned after the Borg invasion and the ship was placed under the command of Captain Afsarah Eden . One of the first missions after getting into the Delta Quadrant would be to meet up with B'Elanna and Miral Paris , who had faked their own deaths. ( VOY novel : Full Circle )

In late 2381, several days from the year 2382 , Voyager had made contact with the Confederacy of the Worlds of the First Quadrant , a civilization modeled similarly to the Federation. Voyager was rescued en route to their space, when they had become under attack by an armada of at least fourteen vessels, all crewed by enemies the ship and crew made during its first tenure in the Delta Quadrant. The Confederacy ships drew the armada away and allowed Voyager safe entry into their space via a subspace phenomenon known as the "stream". Not long after arriving, the leaders of the Confederation had shared a desire to meet the crew of the ship, as a result of their actions with the proctors . After settling into their space, Voyager flew off to meet the USS Vesta , a ship carrying the fleet's new commander, Vice Admiral Janeway. Chakotay would then proceed to give his report about the Confederacy, which prompted further meetings with the new civilization. The ship would remain in the quadrant, the Full Circle Project continuing. ( VOY novel : Protectors )

By 2385 , Voyager would still be in the Delta Quadrant along with the USS Galen . ( TNG novel : The Light Fantastic )

In 2402 , the USS Voyager made first contact with the Lorians , an avian species. ( STO novel : The Needs of the Many )

The USS Voyager remains in service under the command of Rear Admiral Tuvok in 2409 . ( STO video game : Star Trek Online )

Later that year, the Voyager was part of the task force to push the Borg out of fluidic space. ( STO mission : " Fluid Dynamics ")

The USS Voyager was part of the fleet to intercept the Undine during the attack on Earth and Qo'noS . ( STO mission : " Surface Tension ")

Alternate timelines

In an alternate timeline in which the Cardassian Union did not withdraw from Bajor in 2369 , Captain Kathryn Janeway was in command of a version of Voyager which was not stranded in the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker in 2371 . In addition to Janeway, its senior staff included first officer Lt. Commander Aaron Cavit , tactical officer and security chief Lieutenant Tuvok , conn officer Lieutenant Veronica Stadi , chief medical officer Fitzgerald , chief engineer Joseph Carey and operations manager Ensign Harry Kim .

The ship was part of a taskforce consisting of nine ships - which also included the USS Bellerophon and the USS Intrepid - sent to Dorvan V in 2373 order to investigate recent suspicious activities being carried out by the Cardassians on the Federation border. The ships were soon fired upon by a fleet of Galor -class warships armed with phased polaron beam weapons. Unbeknownst to the Federation at this time, these weapons had been provided by the Cardassians' newfound Gamma Quadrant allies, the Dominion . The Cardassians had made contact with the Dominion several years earlier via the wormhole which they discovered in the Bajoran sector , the existence of which they kept secret from the other major Alpha Quadrant powers.

In the midst of the battle, Voyager was able to gather detailed sensor readings. Moments before the ship was destroyed with all hands, Tuvok transmitted these sensor readings to Starfleet Command , enabling the Federation to develop countermeasures against the phased polaron beam weapons. The Intrepid was destroyed along with Voyager whereas the Bellerophon barely escaped intact. Of the six other vessels in the taskforce, only one survived. ( TNG - Myriad Universes novel : A Gutted World )

In a possible future, a back-up copy of the Doctor was activated at the Museum of Kyian Heritage during the 31st century . In this future, the Doctor finds that the Kyrians have mistakenly recorded that Voyager was a heavily-armed warship that laid waste to their planet and sparked a bloody war between the Kyrians and Vaskans. With the help of the museum's historian and curator Quarren, The Doctor was able to use a recovered tricorder with medical scans to prove Voyager's innocence. ( VOY episode : " Living Witness ")

Technical information

Voyager was designed to hold up to 200 crewmembers and was 345 meters in length. As of her return home, she was one of the fleet's most powerful and fastest vessels. The ship's folding nacelles allow warp drive without the damaging the space continuum and for short amounts of time can reach warp 9.975.

Some of the modification made to the vessel included power relays on some decks using Borg technology while the EPS system and backup made use of Enaran power conservation technologies. ( ST website : StarTrek.com )

5.1.1 Lost in the Delta Quadrant

5.1.2 Starting points

While Voyager's journey through the Delta Quadrant was considerably better documented than for instance the subdivision of the Galaxy or the structure of the Federation at the beginning, and was more simple and logical than many other parts of the Star Trek Cartography, in the meantime this journey have rather complicated due to numerous continuity problems, contradictions, but also new basis information. The latter fact has lead to the problem that concerning Voyager's journey, one cannot simply use 1000 ly/year regularly travel distance per year plus the leaps made in the course of the seven year journey any longer. How Rick Sternbach, the "keeper" of the official route of Voyager (that we unfortunately will not know exactly until the ST:VOY TM is published) recently remarked correctly, the distance of Sol to the Galactic core, the initial distance of Voyager from Earth and her bearing are decisive for a depiction of Voyager's journey. A further cornerstone of the Voyager cartography is also Voyager's average speed which has been officially fixed recently. However, the problem arises that all these "fixed values" aren't that fixed in the end. This even applies to the distance of Earth from the center of the Galaxy. Yet, I tried to use the most recent and least contradictious values.

5.1.3 Overview of the journey

5.1.4 Calculation of the momentary distance

While the above table of course only shows Voyager's distance to Earth for selected key events, it is also possible to determine a precise distance at any time by not deducting the yearly covered distance abruptly at the end of each year, but distributing it equally over the whole year. We then get the momentary distance by deducting the already travelled percentage of the yearly covered distance from  the appropriate table distance before the given stardate

For the calculation of Voyager's distance to Earth at a particular time (and therefore the distance of the regions of space crossed and the planets visited at this time etc.), you can use the following step-by-step instructions.

1. Look up the stardate of the episode, e.g. in the ST:VOY Guide .

Example: For [VOY] Message in a Bottle Stardate 51461.5

2. Choose a reference distance to Earth from the above table by comparing the stardate with the table stardates. Important: You have to ignore all yearly covered distances (Stardate xx0000-xx999)!

Example: Stardate 51461.5 is bigger than 51268 in 6., but smaller than 51978 in 8.; the  reference distance to Earth is therefore 62134 ly.

3. Beside the now following normal deduction of the percentage of the yearly covered distance (1), 2 special cases have to be considered: (2) in the first year (stardate 48317-48999), Voyager only travelled 300 ly, therefore the yearly distance being accordingly smaller, and (3) between stardate 51008 and 52619, a Borg correction factor has to bee added to the distance, because during this period of time, Voyager's journey became 2 years longer because of avoiding Borg space.

Example: Stardate 51461.5 is between 51008 and 52619, thus variant (2) has to be used. Enter the stardate and reference distance 62134 ly at (2) and click on the button to calculate the momentary distance of Voyager from Earth at this time.

With the locations of Voyager's journey and a possibility to calculate her exact positions, we also know the positions of all planets visited by Voyager and the territories crossed by the ship. Consequently, the "official" Delta Quadrant is paradoxically much better known than the Alpha or Beta quadrants. Therefore, the following passages deal with the significant locations of the journey of the USS Voyager. Finally, at the end of the chapter a short prospect for the further course of the still continuing journey will be given.

5.1.5 The first year

Since the USS Voyager was taken to the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker not before stardate 48317 (that is in April 2371), the first "year" of Voyager's journey covers only 683 stardate units or 249 days. Consequently, at an average speed of warp 6.2 (438c), Voyager can only travel 300 ly out of the usual 438 ly in 2371. With such a short annual distance, the galactic surroundings has to remain the same to a large extent during this first year - and indeed, Voyager stays the entire year in the sphere of influence of the Kazon-Ogla, Vidiians and Talaxians, who they contacted already in the first weeks in the Delta Quadrant.

5.1.6 The second year

During the second year of her journey, Voyager seems to get on as slowly as in the first year, still passing colonies of the Talaxians, Vidiians and Kazons (mainly Ogla and Nistrim, but also other sects). The reason for this congruence are the diverse delays and course deviations due to the fights with the Kazons, which make a lower speed than the average warp 6.2 and therefore a annual distance of less than 438 ly plausible. However, there were further events in this year that delayed the voyage home, what is proven by the following example

Involuntary "shore leave"

Only after six weeks, during which Voyager kept on flying with normal speed and, according to Tuvok, covered 70 ly in this time, what corresponds to an average speed of warp 6.8 , Voyager has the opportunity to get a cure from the Vidiians. Although Tuvok set a speed of warp 6 after they escaped the Vidiian trap, it is unlikely that Voyager stayed at that speed for the whole time of the flight back to the planet, because then they would have needed a longer time than for the outward flight. Therefore, we can assume that it took Voyager between 3 weeks (at warp 8) and 5 weeks (at warp 7) to travel back to "New Earth". Using the first, more optimistic figure, the crew therefore loses 80 d all in all, what corresponds to a annual distance shortened by 95.998 ly at an average speed of warp 6.2. At the end of the episode, Captain Janeway resumed the course home at warp 8 in order to make up the lost time, but is this possible at all? Day 24 of the involuntary "shore leave" (probably counted without the 17d stasis) corresponds to stardate 49690.1 according to the episode, what places the resumption of the voyage home on stardate 49892.7 . In the remaining 107.3 stardate units or 39.1645d, Voyager could have indeed make up the lost distance of 95.998 ly with an average speed of nearly warp 8 ( warp 7.684 ) , and with an average speed of somewhat more than warp 8 ( Warp 8.66 ), she could additionally travelled the rest of the annual distance of 46.9974 ly that has still to be managed in the remaining time.

During her journey without captain and first officer, the crew has contact to the Vidiians for the last time, therefore Voyager definitely leaves the sphere of influence of this species. Provided that Voyager made first contact with the Vidiians on stardate 48532.4, their territory seems to cover at least 535 ly , although a large extension "above" Voyager's position at the time of first contact is not impossible.

5.1.7 The third year

Despite no large leaps and the usual annual distance of 438 ly, the third year is a year of changes for Voyager's journey. After two years, she finally leaves the known space populated by the Kazons and Vidiians and ventures to new, unknown regions of the Delta Quadrant.

Leaving Kazon space

Already just at the beginning of the year, on stardate 50032.7, the crew of Voyager has the last contact with the Kazon, what seems to imply that they finally leave their "territory" (better called the space dominated by the - nomadic - Kazon sects). It is unknown how far Kazon space extends "above" the Ocampa homeworld, where first contact were made by the crew of Voyager on stardate 48317. However, this planets seems to be located in the border zone rather than in the center of their space, which is dominated by more powerful sects than the Kazon-Ogla, for instance the Kazon-Nistrim. Regarding the space crossed by Voyager within the last 2 years (since the arrival in the Delta Quadrant on stardate 48317), this leads to a diameter of about 750 ly , what can be considerably less (using a lower  annual average speed of Voyager in the first year) or more (based on the assumption that Kazon space extends over several hundred light years above the Ocampa homeworld. A diameter of this magnitude seems to be plausible in view of the fact that the Kazon, being nomadic living traders and conquerors, must naturally populate a larger region of space, what necessarily means that every single planet within this territory must be in their hands, but that the region can have larger "gaps". At any rate, these extensions of the influence spheres of the Vidiians and Kazons support the low annual average speed of 6.2, since based on the maximum cruising speed of Voyager (warp 8 = 1000c), the territories of this rather insignificant species would cover 1500-2000 ly.

The Barzan Wormhole

The territory of the Swarm

The Nekrit Expanse

The Nekrit Expanse is described as an extensive, not surveyed, instable region of space which is full of interstellar dust clouds and plasma storms, but contains only few planets. The expanse has a width of several thousand light years , but seems to be not very deep since Voyager can cross the region in relatively short time. She enters the Nekrit Expanse in "Fair Trade" and apparently already leaves it sometime between "Unity" and "The Darkling", because in the first episode, the expanse is explicitly mentioned (and shown), while in the latter one, with the arrival at the Mikhal outpost Voyager enters a completely new, unknown region of space, and the expanse does not play any part in the following episodes. Consequently, Voyager was definitely inside the Nekrit Expanse between stardate 50443 and 50654 - what results in a total time of 211 stardate units or 77d . If Voyager travelled only at an average speed of warp 6.2 during this two and a half months, then the expanse has a depth of 92.398 ly . However, it is more likely that Voyager travelled at a considerably faster speed during that time. In "Fair Trade", it was mentioned that there are only few planets within the expanse and Voyager loads all necessary supplies for the journey in this episode so that regular stops aren't necessary in the end. This assumption is confirmed by the small number of missions while they travelled through the expanse (visit of four planets). Therefore using the maximum cruising speed of Voyager - warp 8, we get a depth of 216.017 ly for the Nekrit Expanse, a figure, that is considerably more plausible in view of the large width and the ignorance of the people in the regions explored by the USS Voyager about the space behind the expanse. Based on a constant cruising speed of warp 8 and the stardates of the single episodes we can now calculate the distances of the visited planets and crossed regions within the Nekrit Expanse from the border of the expanse:

5.1.8 The forth year

The Mutara class nebula

Note : Because of the incorrect stardate calculation (2.7 days / unit instead of the correct 2.7 units / day) this episode overlaps with the next one, [VOY] Hope and Fear.

5.11 Conclusions

Summarizing, most episodes seem to confirm the calculated route of Voyager. However, there are countless possible variants that would roughly match with the distances given in the episodes. Surely the ST:VOY Technical Manual - should it ever be published - will show a completely other picture of the journey, but until then, the depicted table is as exact and "canon" as possible in view of the many variables that have to be taken into consideration and the many discrepancies and errors in the show itself. Concluding, the following table lists some of the congruences as well as the discrepancies of the calculated route and the actual distances mentioned in the series.

In the end, the last leap on stardate 53329 and the distance Voyager has bridge since then results in a distance of 30067 ly to Earth in the middle of season 7 (by stardate 54500), if the already covered part of the annual distance (219 of 438 ly) is included in the calculations. Consequently, at this time Voyager is only 1944 ly away from the border of the Delta Quadrant, using the revised distance of Earth from the Galactic core (25,800 ly). Hence, she will probably never reach the Beta Quadrant, which is inexplicably a taboo in Star Trek: Voyager, but will surely directly travel back to Earth (by slipstream, transwarp or whatever propulsion technology or powerful being) by the end of season 7, if the "policy of small leaps" of the recent episodes is kept up.

Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of USS Voyager You Need To Know

The ins and outs of Captain Janeway's sweet ride.

Star Trek Voyager

Designed by veteran Star Trek illustrator Rick Sternbach, production designer Richard James, and scenic artist Michael Okuda, the USS Voyager served her illustrious crew for seven seasons of adventures in the distant Delta Quadrant.

The Intrepid-class Voyager was Star Trek's newest and coolest ship when Star Trek: Voyager launched in 1995, described in the pilot script as "a sleek bullet of a ship, built for action". Roughly half the size of Star Trek: The Next Generation's USS Enterprise-D, Voyager was Star Trek's "sleek, nifty, new-generation vessel", a streamlined design that implied forward motion even when the ship was standing still.

While many of the ship's 257 compartments were explored and a number of her "nifty" features depicted during the show's run, many of Voyager's design details and quirks remained offscreen or unmentioned, relegated to the writer's room bible, internal technical manual, various Star Trek encyclopedias, or for fans to sleuth out through careful research and rewatch of the 25 year old series.

While Neelix's recipe for chadre'kab remains a mystery, here are 10 secrets we were able to uncover about the USS Voyager, NCC-74656.

10. A Very Intrepid Class

Star Trek Voyager

While Voyager's sister ship and predecessor, the USS Intrepid (NCC-74600), was mentioned in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Forces of Nature", Voyager herself would be the first of only two Intrepid-class starships seen in the Star Trek franchise.

The Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges" featured the second onscreen Intrepid-class ship, the USS Bellerophon (NCC-74705), a reuse of the Voyager CG model which, in some shots, even still bore Voyager's registry number. Scenes for Deep Space Nine were filmed on the redressed standing Voyager sets including the briefing room, crew quarters, and mess hall – the latter retaining the changes Neelix had made to Voyager's officer's mess to accommodate his added kitchen.

Voyager herself would remain fully isolated in Star Trek: Voyager, never making an appearance in another series, though she did show up in the non-canon Star Trek: The Experience ride film, Borg Invasion 4D, under the command of Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

Voyager also appeared in just a few frames of unique footage, firing weapons at a Borg cube, in the trailer for Star Trek: First Contact. This appearance completely contradicted Voyager's place in continuity at that point and the shot was never used in the finished film or Star Trek: Voyager. This odd appearance was likely a one-off VFX shot created for the trailer because the film's final effects weren't ready for the marketing campaign, but it actually represents the first time the ship was seen sharing the screen with a Borg cube.

Aeroshuttle test footage, and more voyager behind the scenes goodies.

uss voyager inside

This was a visual effects concept test to show the producers of Voyager what a launch sequence of the (as of yet) unused "Aeroshuttle" might look like. This special craft was capable of warp speeds and able to fly in a planetary atmosphere. Ultimately, the decision was made to leave the Aeroshuttle alone and introduce the Delta Flyer (this was shortly before the movie "Insurrection," which featured a launch sequence of the Captain's Yacht - the producers didn't want Voyager to "steal the thunder" of such a scene from the upcoming movie). The test was created by Voyager CGI Supervisors Rob Bonchune and Adam "Mojo" Lebowitz, under the supervision of VFX Producer Dan Curry.

The not-so-small AeroShuttle tucked up under the Voyager forward hull was based roughly on the Starfleet Runabout spaceframe, in hopes that if we ever saw it, we could modify the existing set from DS9. Ah, sadly, it was not to be, but we did get to see the ventral side and I did get to write a bit of imagined history for Star Trek The Magazine. The craft began life as a concept patterned after a manta ray and was nicknamed as such. That turned into the AeroWing, which coincidentally was a copyrighted name for a toy connected to The Mighty Ducks. Headscratching ensued. AeroShuttle became the in-house term.

One of the preliminary views of the ship based on some Runabout hardware styling, following an early approval from the producers for a smaller (smaller than Ent-D), slightly pointy vessel with down-turned pylons.

uss voyager inside

Here's a front view of the early, more angular Voyager (going backwards just a little in time). A few changes were made to the forward hull and the shape of the shuttlebay landing deck to make the third phase drawings and foamcore study model.

uss voyager inside

This sizing chart is still earlier than the first pic in this series, but it shows the thinking of the possible size for the angular third phase. I did a few versions of the chart with the ship at different lengths for the producers; this one comes in at 1250 feet. Other Starfleet ships are added to show the size relationships.

uss voyager inside

Here's a cutaway from the front of the angular Voyager, or at least a version of it, partly to get a sense of the deck numbers and partly to place standard bits of Starfleet hardware. Whatever sets got designed and built would be fit into the eventual blueprints (to marry up the interior and exterior), like Captain Janeway's ready room, the conference lounge, and crew quarters, but at this early stage it was still pretty fluid.

uss voyager inside

One additional angle on the foamcore mockup of the ship, just before curvitization. I may have mentioned this before, but this particular mockup escaped our custody, I assume about the time the art department was shutting down in 2001, but I can report that it is now in safe hands (not mine) and will be restored and a few dings repaired. A few other foamcore mockups I built, like a very early Type 6 TNG shuttle and the alien shuttle Nenebek, also went this way or that, but c'est la vie.

uss voyager inside

Once the perspective sketch of the curvy Voyager was approved, a preliminary set of ortho views was drawn up on our standard 24"x36" blueprint paper. The producers and the VFX folks were given copies of this one, with the added notice "Not for Construction - For Discussion Purposes Only." At this time, we still didn't have a final approval on the nacelle articulation, but I kept drawing sketches and played with the ship in rough CG printouts. As you can see, most all of the hull surface details were falling nicely into place.

uss voyager inside

Once the preliminary blueprints had been approved, drawn on 24"x36" tracing vellum, the real blueprints were started. The producers and VFX decided that the miniature would be five feet long, and that's how big I made the construction drawings. Full size, 60" long, on slightly longer paper. Luckily my drafting table was long enough to hold them. The first tricky part was getting the top/bottom plan view -and- the starboard elevation on the table together to match up. The other tricky part was having to reach three feet or more near the top of the table to draw with the t-square and triangle and a bunch of templates. Worked out, though. The general hinge area for the pylons is indicated, but the final look would be determined by the model makers based on how things came together structurally. The manta shuttle is still there, soon to be replaced. All of the other hull features are pretty much locked.

I like the Manta, but I can see why they scrapped it--looks very Cardassian.

The USS Voyager NCC-74656 was one of the four of its kind made with newly advanced technology that makes it so advanced from the other previous Starships. Its length measures 344 metres and its width is 130 metres wide. The Voyager is an Intrepid-class Starship. This ship can hold two hundred crew membersthough only one hundred and fifty four crew members were recruited when it was first sent into the Badlands to find the Maquis. The crew complement however, was somewhat reduced throughout its journey in the Delta Quadrant due to frequent encounters with hostile aliens or anomalies. To compensate, new recruits were added to the positions needing fulfilling.

There are fifteen decks on the VoyagerDeck One being the top of the saucer and Deck Fifteen being the lowest deck. The Bridge, the center of all operations, is on Deck One. The main source of power to the ship's systems is located on Decks Ten and Eleven being Main Engineering.

Intrepid-class ships are new classes of Starships with advanced technology. It costs relatively less than a Galaxy-class ship. It was built to defend against the Cardassians, Maquis, and the Borg, where the starship is highly maneuverable and was designed for tactical missions.

Some of its features are its bioneural gel packs, systems to increase isolinear processors, variable geometry warp nacelles which allows high-warp flight, and an Emergency Medical Hologram which is also installed into this class to handle health of the crew in emergency situations when the resident Doctor is not available. The EMH has become the ship's main medical personnel when the Voyager's original doctor was killed in action during their encounter with the Caretaker when they first entered the Delta Quadrant.

One feature that other Intrepid-class ships do not have is the (ten times more accurate) advanced Astrometrics Laboratory. The technological advancement to the ship with Borg technology was added during the alliance between the Borg and the crew of Voyager in 2374, stardate 51003.7.

As advanced as the intrepid-class is there are two minor offsets with the ships: they are not designed for families and the replicators are not the most reliable.

But like all Starships, the Voyager includes a set of structural and operation systemsSelf-destruct and warp-core ejection, escape pods, jefferies tube network, bussard ramscoops, reaction control systems, docking bays, and fluid handling systems.

The U.S.S Voyager NCC-74656 is an Intrepid-class starship. As is the case with all Starfleet ships, the bridge is on Deck 1, at the top of the command saucer. On the bridge, the captain and her senior officers acquire instrument and sensor data, control command functions, access the main computer, analyze situations, and take any action that seems proper. The bridge is the brain of the ship.

The bridge area is decorated in tones of silver, gray, and chrome. Control surfaces are black, with the usual array of colored pads arranged into a keyboard. Because the sophisticated onboard computer is capable of determining and executing all routine operations, trained crew members are able to control the ship with a minimum of keystrokes. When it is necessary to enter directional information, one may use the circular 'joystick' pad.

I Don't Care If Modern Star Trek Breaks Established Canon

Star trek: 4 most powerful ships ever, star trek explains why it uses 'quadrants' despite the universe being infinite.

Star Trek: Voyager   ran for seven seasons before delivering its last episode, "Endgame" as a two-part special on May 23rd, 2001, making for an ending that saw the crew get home and encompassed many of the show's core themes. Voyager tells the story of the crew of the USS Voyager under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway, and their journey to find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant after they are accidentally thrown into the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 lightyears from their home.

This premise offers a unique perspective on the Star Trek universe, allowing the show to introduce both unexplored sci-fi concepts and new alien races on a much larger scale than other shows in the franchise had been able to do. The crew must also learn how to live and work together, as a number of them are former Maquis , members of an anti-Federation resistance force who Voyager was sent to track down. Through the seven seasons, the crew of the ship goes from wary allies to a cohesive team and, finally, to a family, as close relationships form, and bonds are forged by being so far away from home.

Not all the challenges the crew faced were foreign, however. One of the biggest enemies dealt with in later seasons was the Borg, the famous cybernetically enhanced hive-mind race that had been terrorizing the crews of various Star Trek shows since The Next Generation . The Borg play a significant role in over half of the show's run, especially with the addition of Seven of Nine , a former Borg drone rescued by the crew. Another common Star Trek plot device that showed up during Voyager's run was the idea of time travel. The Borg and the concept of time travel serve as the main plot drivers for "Endgame", and are ultimately the two reasons the crew are able to accomplish what they have been attempting to do all series: get home.

What Happens In Voyager's Ending?

"Endgame" begins 26 years in the future, a future where Voyager and her crew have made it home, although not without consequences. These consequences weigh heavily on the conscience of the now Admiral Kathryn Janeway, who decides to use a device called a chrono deflector stolen from a Klingon named Korath to create a temporal wormhole and return to the year 2378. She finds Voyager and convinces her younger self, the still-Captain Janeway, and her crew that she can help them get home. She directs them back to a network of wormholes in a nebula they originally avoided because of a massive Borg presence and provides them with technology including shipwide armor and transphasic torpedos, to protect against Borg attack. The crew adapts the technology to the ship and makes their way back to the nebula, only to find that the wormholes are part of a massive transwarp hub that if destroyed will deal a crippling blow to the Borg. Destroying it, however, will mean the crew will lose their chance of getting home. The Borg Queen communicates to Seven of Nine that, if Voyager attempts to use or destroy the hub, she will retaliate with deadly force.

Captain Janeway is furious with her older self for not telling her about the hub, and the two argue about the right thing to do before Admiral Janeway breaks her promise to not tell Captain Janeway anything about the future, and informs her of the horrors that will be wrought on her crew if the Captain does not take this opportunity; Tuvok will become mentally unstable, unable to get the cure in time for the neurological disease he has begun to suffer from. Seven of Nine will die on an away mission in the Delta Quadrant and her husband Chakotay will be so grief-stricken that he will never recover and die sometime later of an implied broken heart after Voyager gets home.

Shaken by this news, Captain Janeway tells her crew that they won't go through with the plan to destroy the hub unless everyone agrees to do it, but the crew agrees despite the risks. Touched by the crew's loyalty and love of each other, Admiral Janeway admits she was wrong for lying about the hub and agrees to help. Captain Janeway convinces her that there is a way to both destroy the hub and get Voyager home. While the Admiral distracts the Borg Queen , Voyager enters the hub and sets its destruction in motion, riding the shockwave from the explosions along a conduit the Alpha Quadrant. At the last minute, and ship is pursued by a Borg Sphere but is able to take on the Sphere and destroy it once they reach the Alpha Quadrant. The last shot of  Star Trek: Voyager  is the titular vessel triumphantly flying towards Earth, surrounded by Federation ships.

How Did The Two Janeways Fool The Borg Queen?

Getting Voyager home relies entirely on the Janeways' plan to trick the Borg Queen in the Star Trek: Voyager series finale. This hinges on Admiral Janeway pulling off some sleight of hand. When the Admiral first appears to the Borg Queen, it seems as though she had turned on the Voyager crew again. Talking to the Queen in her mind using a device that allows her to pilot her ship via a neural link, the Admiral insists that she will give the Queen the information on how to stop Voyager from destroying the hub if the Queen will send a Borg ship to tow Voyager safely home. The Queen agrees to help but then turns on Admiral Janeway once she has found the physical location of her shuttle and body. She begins to assimilate Janeway, and it seems as though the Admiral has been outsmarted, until it is revealed that before leaving Voyager, she was deliberately infected with a neurolytic pathogen that begins to work on the Queen immediately, severing her connection from the rest of the collective and beginning to destroy her body as well.

Without their Queen, the Borg have no guidance, and Voyager is able to carry out its mission to destroy the hub. The Queen makes one last valiant stand by sending the last ship at her disposal after Voyager, but by a trick of flying, Voyager manages to fly inside of the ship, ride in it the rest of the way through the transwarp conduit to the Alpha Quadrant, and then detonate the ship from the inside out. Once the ship is destroyed, they fly out to meet the Federation ships waiting for them.

Because of the pathogen, The Unicomplex housing the Queen explodes, killing her and Admiral Janeway. The Borg Queen is defiant to the last , convinced that the ship she sent after Voyager will destroy Captain Janeway and crew and that Admiral Janeway will cease to exist as a result. Voyager destroys the ship, however, and in the end, the Queen is only right in her prediction that Admiral Janeway will also cease to exist. Admiral Janeway chooses the fate of assimilation and certain death, knowing that if the plan works, she will die anyway since the future will be rewritten by her actions. She has known this from the beginning of the episode, telling the future Harry Kim that she is aware her mission is a "one-way trip" .

Time Travel And Changing The Future

As previously stated, time travel plays a big role in Star Trek: Voyager . In fact, there is even a precedent for a member of the crew coming back from the future to prevent dire events from happening to the crew. The season 5 episode "Timeless" deals with a future Harry Kim and Chakotay attempting to get a message back in time from a bleak future where the rest of the Voyager crew was killed in an accident while trying to get home. They ultimately stop the crew from attempting the maneuver, and rewrite the future, just as Admiral Janeway does in "Endgame". Besides "Timeless", there are a number of important episodes that deal with time travel, such as "Future's End", "Year of Hell", and "Relativity".

Related: Star Trek: How Time Travel Works In Each TV Show & Movie

The fact that time travel is a well-used plot device does not take away from how jarring it is to set "Endgame" 26 years in a future that the audience knows nothing about. From the beginning, it is a shock to see the ship safe on Earth, and the crew aged and moved on with their lives. The jump to the future is used not only as a means to a narrative end, but as a way to shock and draw in the audience to the rest of the story.

Seven of Nine and Chakotay

While the relationship between Seven of Nine and Chakotay had been evolving into something more intimate over the last eight episodes of Star Trek: Voyager 's final season, it is not until "Endgame" that audiences see it reach its fullest potential. It is revealed early on in the episode that the two have begun dating in earnest, and they are shown to become closer throughout the episode, sharing their first kiss and several tender moments as the plot progresses. The biggest plot twist is the reveal that the two were married in Admiral Janeway's timeline, proving that their nascent relationship has the potential to become something more serious.

Seven of Nine and Chakotay's relationship was a surprise to many fans, as it had only been set up to be romantic late in the season. The fact that they seem to be in it for the long haul by the end of the final episode is a twist that fans would have been hard-pressed to see coming. Similarly, their deaths in the future serve to shock the audience and make Admiral Janeway's motivation for getting the crew home sooner even more clear.

The Importance Of Family

Voyager , more than any other Star Trek series, is at its core about a family, something that is no better demonstrated than in the case of main characters Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres. Tom and B'Elanna start off as grudging allies who are reluctant to work together. By the end of the final season though, the two are married and expecting a child, a baby girl born in the final moments of "Endgame". Family, particularly a family of choice, is a core theme throughout Voyager and something that makes the show special to fans, the close character relationships serving as the driving force that makes the plot more engaging.

Related: All 6 Voyager Characters Who Returned In Other Star Trek Shows & Movies

It really is no surprise then that love for her Voyager family is what makes Admiral Janeway do what she does in "Endgame", or that it is the thing that convinces her in the end that there is a way to both destroy the hub and get Voyager home. Much of "Endgame" is centered on the relationships between the crew; the love they have developed for each other over the years is palpable throughout the episode. Likewise, whether it is Tom and B'Elanna's happy marriage, or Seven and Chakotay's budding romance, Star Trek: Voyager 's "Endgame" makes the point that this love, this family, is going to last, even after the show is over.

The Real Meaning Of Voyager's Ending

Throughout Star Trek: Voyager 's run, it was never made explicitly clear that the crew would be making it home. Even up until the last five minutes of the episode, it was unclear whether or not the crew's plan would come to fruition. The creative team behind the show could have made the choice to end "Endgame" with the ship in the Delta Quadrant, with their fates uncertain. Instead, "Endgame" makes it clear once again that not only does every single member of the Voyager crew deserve to survive, but that their ability seven years ago to put aside their differences, work together, and ultimately come to love each other like family is the singular thing that helped them accomplish their goal. " Endgame " proves that love really does conquer all, and that, in the words of Harry Kim, "Maybe it's not the destination that matters. Maybe it's the journey."

Delta Flyer (2375)

The Delta Flyer was a specially designed Starfleet shuttlecraft constructed by the crew of the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant in 2375 . The vessel was designed to handle environments that would be too hazardous for a standard shuttlecraft and to be slightly larger than the average shuttle, the crew having acknowledged that standard shuttles were of little use in the increasingly hostile and unexplored Delta Quadrant. The vessel was a blend of Starfleet and Borg technology, designed in collaboration between B'Elanna Torres , Tom Paris , Tuvok , Harry Kim , and Seven of Nine . It was conceived as incorporating a tetraburnium alloy hull with ultra-aerodynamic contours, retractable warp nacelles , parametallic hull plating , unimatrix shielding , and a Borg-inspired weapon system, including photonic missiles , most of which were Paris' conceptions. For aesthetic reasons, Paris designed some of the flight controls to resemble those from the holodeck simulation of Captain Proton ; when Tuvok complained, Paris explained that he wanted to feel the ship and that he was tired of tapping panels. But to Paris' disappointment, the addition of dynametric tailfins was denied by Tuvok. Instead of having the usual two pilot stations, it had several command stations. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

Knowledge of this craft was known to Tuvok as early as 2371 but kept secret due to the Temporal Prime Directive . ( VOY : " Fury ")

Design and first mission [ ]

Delta Flyer in its hanger

The Delta Flyer being prepared for its first mission

The idea to design a larger, more efficient shuttle than the cramped Class 2 shuttle was first given to the Delta Flyer 's designer, Lieutenant junior grade Tom Paris, by the former Borg drone Seven of Nine in 2375 . ( VOY : " Drone ")

Delta Flyer analog cockpit control panel

Delta Flyer Analog Cockpit Control Panel

Subsequently, Paris brought up the idea numerous times, but was always rebuffed. Captain Kathryn Janeway finally authorized the craft's construction, which was led by Paris, in order to retrieve a multi-spatial probe that was lost in the atmosphere of a gas giant and in danger of being stolen by the Malon . The deciding factor was that Paris had already laid a lot of groundwork, and so the shuttle would not have to be designed from scratch. The Malon also began work on a shuttlecraft of their own and finished theirs before the Flyer was complete. When the Malon sent out their shuttle, the Flyer was deployed early, despite a flaw in the vessel's structural integrity . The Flyer was successful in retrieving the probe, but a hull breach started to occur. B'Elanna Torres designed a makeshift device that deployed a temporary force field , successfully containing the breach. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

Rejected features included dynametric tailfins . Harry Kim 's repeated calls to reinforce the hull with kellinite were also continuously rejected. ( VOY : " Extreme Risk ")

2375 missions [ ]

The Delta Flyer 's second mission was to infiltrate a Species 8472 terrasphere . Paris, Kim, and Chakotay took the Flyer out to investigate the terrasphere. When the undercover Chakotay was revealed, Voyager rendezvoused with the Delta Flyer . ( VOY : " In the Flesh ")

The Delta Flyer encountered near-destruction in its third mission when it got caught in an ion storm and crash landed three kilometers under rock on a class M planet. Life support began to fail and Paris, Samantha Wildman , and Tuvok did not believe they could be rescued. The Voyager crew was able to dig through the rock and locate the Delta Flyer . The crew and the Flyer were beamed aboard. ( VOY : " Once Upon a Time ")

In early 2375 , Voyager was equipped with a quantum slipstream drive and used it in an attempt to return to the Alpha Quadrant . The Flyer , piloted by Chakotay and Kim, rode the slipstream ahead of Voyager in order to chart the slipstream and send appropriate phase corrections to Voyager . Unfortunately, the drive proved unstable and nearly caused Voyager to lose structural integrity . Fortunately, a Harry Kim from an alternate timeline where the ship had been destroyed, was able to transmit a phase correction directly to Seven of Nine's Borg implants which shut the drive down. Use of the drive was then abandoned until it could be better understood.

Delta Flyer 2390

The Delta Flyer being chased by the USS Challenger

In the previously mentioned alternate timeline , the Delta Flyer remained in the slipstream on course to the Federation while Voyager crash-landed on a class L planet . Fifteen years later , Chakotay, Kim, and Tessa Omond stole the Delta Flyer from a shipyard and used it to locate the remains of Voyager . They retrieved Seven of Nine's corpse and The Doctor from the buried ship. By analyzing Seven's cranial implant they intended to determine when it had shut down and thus when Voyager was destroyed, allowing them to transmit their message accordingly. The Doctor was the only person who could determine the necessary temporal coordinates for their mission. They used a temporal transmitter to transmit the proper phase corrections to Seven via the implant, which would allow Voyager to remain safe in the slipstream. Unfortunately, Kim's corrections did not work - but with time running out, The Doctor convinced him to send another message, this time with corrections which would collapse the slipstream. Just as he transmitted the drive shutdown sequence, the Delta Flyer was destroyed by a warp core breach induced by attacks from the USS Challenger . ( VOY : " Timeless ")

A few months later, the Delta Flyer was used to go underwater on The Waters of the Moneans . The Flyer was able to take large amounts of stress, entering great depths of water. It was even able to reach the core of the ocean which was quite deep underwater. This core was actually a large containment field generator. ( VOY : " Thirty Days ")

During a mission where Voyager crew stole a Borg transwarp coil , Seven of Nine was captured by the Borg. The coil was installed on board the Delta Flyer , for which it was used to proceed to the unicomplex to retrieve Seven. When Janeway beamed into the complex, she was stuck there with Seven when the Borg Queen activated a dispersal field . Seven was able to disable the Queen's interface to the collective and the field was deactivated. With Janeway and Seven retrieved, the Flyer proceeded back to transwarp and returned to Voyager , pursued by the Queen's diamond ; they were briefly forced to transfer power from life support to the shields during the pursuit to give themselves the necessary shield strength to reach the exit point before they were captured. ( VOY : " Dark Frontier ")

Ellipse interior

The Delta Flyer tractors the Ares IV inside the ellipse.

The Flyer escapes the ellipse

The Delta Flyer is towed out of the ellipse.

When Voyager encountered a graviton ellipse , the Delta Flyer was sent in to locate the Ares IV command module, which was lost in the ellipse in 2032 . The crew of Tom Paris, Chakotay, and Seven of Nine examined several artifacts trapped in the ellipse before finding the command module. While the Flyer attempted to tractor the module out of the ellipse, the ellipse was hit by a dark matter asteroid . The Delta Flyer was severely damaged and Chakotay was injured. Aboard Voyager , B'Elanna Torres devised a method to use an ion distributor from the Ares IV to repair vital components of the Flyer . Seven beamed to the Ares IV module where she located the distributor and downloaded the sensor data and logs of the Ares IV commander, John Kelly . She returned to the Flyer with the distributor and Kelly's body. The distributor was connected to the Flyer power systems and the shuttle was able to escape before the ellipse returned to subspace . ( VOY : " One Small Step ")

During a period of shore leave on Voyager , Janeway took the Flyer to a nearby planet in the Norcadian star system . When Seven and Tuvok were kidnapped by Penk , Voyager engaged in battle with his vessel . Penk was able to disable Voyager , but Janeway arrived in the Flyer and was able to disable Penk's signal antenna, forcing Penk to lower power to his ship's force fields. This allowed Seven and Tuvok, along with several other competitors held hostage aboard the ship, to be rescued. Janeway and the Flyer returned to Voyager . ( VOY : " Tsunkatse ")

Chakotay, Neelix, Harry Kim, and Tom Paris returned from a mission aboard the Delta Flyer and were abducted by a damaged Borg cube run by adolescent Borg. The Flyer was locked in a Borg hangar while the Voyager crew were attempting to negotiate for the return of the shuttle and its crew. Before the Borg cube was destroyed due to a feedback pulse after the Borg attempted to remove Voyager 's deflector dish , the Delta Flyer escaped the ship. ( VOY : " Collective ")

Later that year, Janeway decided to take the Flyer on an astronomical survey, crewed by Voyager crewmembers who were not working to the best of their abilities and who had never been on an away mission. The mission became dire when the Flyer was attacked, disabling its warp drive . Janeway plotted a course for a nearby planet and ordered the crewmen to abandon the Flyer . They refused to leave her, although one crewmember, Mortimer Harren , abandoned the Flyer aboard a escape pod and used it to distract the dark matter object. Harren inadvertently discovered how to deter the object using phasers , which the Delta Flyer used to escape. Soon after Harren was returned to the Flyer , an explosion occurred, disabling it. Voyager picked up the distress signal and retrieved the damaged shuttle. ( VOY : " Good Shepherd ")

The Delta Flyer was impersonated by a vessel piloted by several con artists attempting to use the reputations of the Voyager crew for criminal purposes. In order to track their hiding spot, Voyager captured one of the criminals, Dala , and allowed her to escape aboard the Delta Flyer . Tom Paris and The Doctor stowed away in the aft compartment, apprehended Dala, and retook the Flyer after she flew it to the criminals' hiding spot. ( VOY : " Live Fast and Prosper ")

Delta Flyer crashed on Kelis' homeworld

The Delta Flyer , crashed on Kelis' homeworld

While on an exploration mission, the Delta Flyer crashed on a planet with a pre-warp society. Harry Kim was able to evacuate, but B'Elanna Torres remained aboard and survived the impact. A poet on the planet named Kelis found the Flyer and figured out how to access its database, using Voyager 's experiences in the Delta Quadrant as a basis for his plays. Torres attempted to repair the Flyer with Kelis' help, but the ship was damaged beyond her means. Kim eventually located the Flyer and brought an emergency transmitter from the escape pod, which was used to send a distress signal to Voyager . The Flyer was transported aboard and required major repairs. ( VOY : " Muse ")

When Kes traveled back in time to the first year of Voyager 's journey, the tachyon particles caused by her presence in the past resulted in Tuvok experiencing 'flash-forwards' of events that wouldn't happen on Voyager for several years, with the first example of these being when he suggested that the Delta Flyer be used to navigate a region of space filled with subspace vacuoles due to its advanced sensors over four years before it would even be constructed. ( VOY : " Fury ")

Destruction [ ]

Delta Flyer destroyed

The Delta Flyer is destroyed

In early 2377 , Janeway, Tuvok, and Torres flew the Delta Flyer to a Borg tactical cube , with the goal of infiltrating the vessel and assisting the drones of Unimatrix Zero . While approaching the cube, the Borg Queen located the Flyer . The away team beamed onto the cube just as the Flyer was destroyed. ( VOY : " Unimatrix Zero ")

The destroyed Flyer was replaced by a craft of the same name and of similar design and specification, albeit with fewer " Captain Proton "-inspired embellishments. ( VOY : " Drive ")
