In 2024 speelt de Tour zich voornamelijk af in het oosten en zuid-westen van Frankrijk. Het belooft een spectaculaire tour te worden met zeven bergetappes, waarvan vier met een finish op een bergtop! Met een totaal aantal hoogtemeters van ruim 52 kilometer is het net als vorig jaar wederom een editie voor de klimmers. Weer twee tijdritten en zeven bergetappes met 4 bergfinishes

De tour van 2024 belooft veel moois voor de kijkers. Waar er vorig jaar maar één tijdrit onderdeel van de tour was, worden er dit jaar weer vertrouwd twee tijdritten verreden. De Tour 2024 biedt dus wat meer variatie dan vorig jaar, maar toch komen de klimmers weer goed aan hunt trekken. Met zeven bergetappes, waarvan er vier bergop finishen, ligt het aantal bergetappes wat lager dan de vorige editie (die had er acht).

Voor de liefhebber van bergetappes is de tour van 2024 wederom een feestje: de route voert door de Apennijnen, de Alpen, de Pyreneeën en het Centraal Massief. De eerste grote beklimming staat in de vierde etappe op de kalender: de Col du Galibier. Later in de Tour komen de renners nog veel meer iconische bergen tegen, zoals de Col du Tourmalet, Pla d’Adet, Col de Peyresourde, Col de Menté, Plateau de Beille, Col de la Couillole en de hoogste berg van allemaal, de Col de la Bonette met zijn 2.802 meter. Waar de afgelopen edities van de Tour de France meerdere tijdritten op de kalender terug te vinden waren, was er in 2023 slechts één enkele tijdrit op de kalender terug te vinden die met 22,4 kilometer ook nog eens vrij kort was. Voor de sprinters is 2024 een betere editie, waar als vanouds weer twee tijdritten verreden worden met een totale afstand van meer dan 58 kilometer.

Finish voor het eerst niet in Parijs

De Tour de France zal dit jaar voor het eerst niet traditiegetrouw in Parijs finishen. In plaats van rondjes op de Champs-Élysées zullen de laatste meters gereden worden tijdens een individuele tijdrit in Nice.

Van 29 juni tot en met 21 juli wordt de Tour de France verreden door de Nederlandse mannen. De 111 de editie van de Ronde van Frankrijk start dit jaar in Toscane, Italië. De eerste drie etappes vinden allemaal plaats in Italië. 

Dit jaar eindigt de Tour de France voor het eerst niet in hoofdstad Parijs, mede door de Olympische Spelen die daar deze zomer plaatsvinden. De Tour zal eindigen in de Zuid-Franse stad Nice. De Tour de France van 2024 telt 3.405 kilometer in totaal.  Nederlandse deelnemers:

Who has abandoned the 2024 Tour de France ?

Stage 21 - Tadej Pogačar punctuates third GC title with dominant ITT win in Nice / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) sealed the third overall Tour victory in his career using a dominant display of power in the hilly stage 21 time trial. It was his sixth stage win of this year's Tour. In the yellow jersey and the last man down the start ramp in Monaco, he completed the 33.7km course in 45:25, 1:03 up on second-placed Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). World time trial champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) was another 11 seconds back in third. 

Vingegaard, who won the last two Tours, finished 6:17 behind Pogačar for second place overall, while Evenepoel took third, 9:18 back. 

Stage 20 - Tadej Pogačar stamps his authority in yellow with victory atop Col de la Couillole ahead of Jonas Vingegaard / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar’s (UAE Team Emirates) outsprinted Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) at the top of the Col de la Couillole to win stage 20 of the Tour de France on Saturday. It was the race leader's fifth stage victory of the Tour.

The duo caught, and passed, the two-rider breakaway of Enric Mas (Movistar) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) with 2.5km on the climb, Carapaz trying to hold their back wheels but fading to third on the stage. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) would pass Mas and finish fourth, holding on to third overall in the standings.

Stage 19 -  Tour de France: Tadej Pogačar takes stunning solo win on stage 19 to secure yellow jersey / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar tightened his grip on the 2024 Tour de France with yet another stage victory in Isola 2000 after yet another dominant performance.  

UAE Team Emirates controlled the breakaway over the Cime de la Bonette and then Pogačar caught and dropped Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) just two kilometres from the finish to win his 15th Tour stage and his tenth Grand Tour stage of the year. 

Pogačar took a bow as he crossed the finish line, with Jorgenson 20 seconds behind and dejected in defeat. Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard finishing at 1:42, focusing on their battle for second and third rather than trying to match Pogačar. 

Stage 18 -  Tour de France: Victor Campenaerts surges from three-rider breakaway for stage 18 victory / As it happened

Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) won stage 18 from Gap to Barcelonnette in the low climbs and valleys of the Alps, after a breakaway was finally allowed to fight  for victory. The Belgian rider beat Tour debutant Mattéo Vercher (TotalEnergies) and Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) after 36 riders attacked early in the stage. 

The trio worked well together in the final 35 km and then sprinted for the stage victory. 

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and the other GC contenders preferred to save their energy for the final mountain stage of this year’s Tour de France that began on Friday, the peloton finishing 13:40 down on Campenaerts.

Stage 17 - Richard Carapaz climbs to stage 17 solo victory as Pogačar fortifies lead / As it happened

Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) finally claimed a hard-fought stage victory after days of trying in the breakaways. But the news of the day was Tadej Pogačar launching an unexpected attack while his rivals were isolated from their teammates. While his move didn't work, Remco Evenepoel got away to gain 10 seconds.

Stage 16 - Jasper Philipsen nets third win on frantic stage 16 sprint in Nîmes / As it happened

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) sprinted to his third stage win of the Tour de France, dominating the closing sprint of stage 16 in Nîmes as green jersey Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) crashed in the final 2km.

The Belgian eased to his ninth career Tour stage win ahead of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) to draw a close to one of the dullest days of this year’s race after a perfect lead-out from Mathieu van der Poel and all the Alpecin-Deceuninck train.

Stage 15 - Tadej Pogačar counters Jonas Vingegaard to win on Plateau de Beille / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) has shown, once again, that he is currently the strongest climber at the 2024 Tour de France. The yellow jersey soloed to victory on stage 15 on the Plateau de Beille. For the second day in a row, Pogačar beat Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) on a mountain finish and increased his lead in the overall classification to 3:09 over the Dane.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) finished the day in third place and held onto this third place overall, now at 5:19 back in the GC standings.

Stage 14 - Tadej Pogačar solos to stage 14 victory on Pla d’Adet, consolidates his lead / As it happened

On the first summit finish of the 2024 Tour de France, Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) strengthened his hold on the maillot jaune after a thrilling finish up to Pla d’Adet saw him ride away to a stunning solo victory on stage 14 to extend his lead over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep).

Pogačar bridged to an earlier attack of teammate Adam Yates before the Brit emptied the tank before the race leader, who then more than honoured the yellow jersey by riding solo through the packed crowds to a second stage win of the 2024 race some 39 seconds ahead of Vingegaard in second and 1:10 to Evenepoel.

Stage 13 - Jasper Philipsen powers to stage 13 victory in Pau ahead of Van Aert / As it happened

It was a hectic day of racing with crosswinds and multiple breakaways and a crash in the final sprint, but Jasper Philipsen prevailed through it all to take his second stage win of the 2024 Tour de France over Wout van Aert. There were no changes in the general classification other than the abandon of Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso leaving the race .

Stage 12 - Biniam Girmay the new sprint boss, takes third win on stage 12 / As it happened

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) won his third stage at the 2024 Tour de France and extended his lead in the green points jersey competition, producing another superb sprint finish in Villeneuve-sur-Lot.

The Eritrean appeared too far back in the final 500 metres but teammate Mike Teunissen dragged him up to Kirstoff’s wheel as the sprint exploded. He then jumped down the middle of the road to beat Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike).

Arnaud Démare (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) crossed the line in third place but was later relegated for closing Van Aert along the barriers. Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) finished fifth but was also relegated after he swerved to avoid Démare’s leadout man Dan McLay, who dropped back down the centre of the road.

Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) finished safely in the peloton to retain the race lead but Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) was involved in a crash with 12 km to go. He finished 2:27 down on the peloton.

Stage 11 - Jonas Vingegaard charges ahead of Tadej Pogačar to win gripping finale / As it happened

Some 98 days after his horror crash at Itzulia Basque country, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) produced the most important moment of the 2024 Tour de France so far, mounting an incredible comeback ride to both pull back Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and beat him in the two-up sprint in Le Lioran after being dropped 31.6km from the finish.

In what was a remarkable signal of a complete return to form for Vingegaard, who was a question mark for even starting the 111th edition of the Tour, the two-time defending champion clawed back a 30-second deficit to the race leader on the Col de Pertus, before working together and stunning him in the final sprint.

Pogačar waited until the final 150 metres to launch his explosive charge for home but surprisingly, the yellow jersey never came out of the wheel and the Dane held on with a great break throw, only daring to celebrate his fourth Tour stage win past the line.

Stage 10 - Jasper Philipsen launches well-timed sprint ahead of Girmay for stage victory / As it happened

After all the controversy and disappointment of the first week, Jasper Philipsen got back in the wins at the  Tour de France  on stage 10 following a textbook lead-out from World Champion Mathieu van der Poel and Alpecin-Deceuninck.

Finally, the win came for the best sprinter from last year’s Tour, with him hitting the wind in the final few hundred metres and the difference in power was so obvious, with a clear gap to second-placed Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) at the line, who continued a great run of form ahead of Pascal Ackermann (Israel-Premier Tech) in third.

Stage 9 - Anthony Turgis wins chaotic and captivating stage 9 / As it happened

As expected, gravel-packed stage 9 delivered hectic racing with the fight for the stage win, and the battle between contenders heated up. Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) outsprinted his breakaway companions to take the win ahead of Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) and Derek Gee (Israel-PremierTech).

Yellow jersey Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) launched numerous attacks and though he managed to briefly distance Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), the reduced peloton regrouped and the contenders finished together with no changes to the top 5 in the general classification.

Stage 8 - Tour de France: Biniam Girmay triumphs with second sprint victory on stage 8 / As it happened  

Biniam Girmay continued a fairytale Tour de France as he took his second stage victory - this time donned in the green jersey, a competition where he now enjoys an 88-point lead.

The Eritrean rider was well protected by his Intermarché-Wanty, who placed him perfectly as he launched an attack from the wheel of Byran Coquard to sprint against Jasper Philipsen in a one-on-one battle to the line in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises. Stage favourite Arnaud De Lie came in third.

Stage 7 - Remco Evenepoel powers to stage 7 time trial victory as Pogačar holds onto yellow / As it happened

Time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel announced his presence in his first Tour de France and won the race against the clock on stage 7. Clad in the Tour's best young rider jersey rather than the rainbow stripes, he was 12 seconds faster than race leader Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates). Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) took a solid third, 34 seconds down on the Belgian, while Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) finished fourth in the 25.3km route from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin.

Stage 6 - Dylan Groenewegen wins photo finish at the line in Dijon / As it happened

Dylan Groenewegen (Jayco AlUla) threw his bike across the line in the dark shadows of stage 6 in Dijon and won the first photo finish of the Tour de France. He celebrated with a victory over Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who was later relegated from second place to 107th for blocking a Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) then moved from third to second place, and maintained the green jersey for a third day. Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) moved up to third place on the stage. There were no changes in the GC, with Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) arriving safely in the bunch.

Stage 5 - Mark Cavendish carves history with all-time record-breaking win on stage 5 / As it happened

There was a time when Mark Cavendish stage victories at the Tour de France seemed to come about almost as a matter of routine, like the setting of the sun or the rising of the tides. The road to his record-breaking 35th victory was altogether more complicated, but that only heightened the emotion as the Manxman won stage 5 in Saint Vulbas on Wednesday afternoon.

The sprint finale was a chaotic one, as is so often the case in the modern Tour, but Cavendish has been imposing his order on situations like this since he was barely out of his teens. He delivered a rasping sprint to beat Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility) to the line, breaking the record he had shared with Eddy Merckx since 2021.

Stage 4 - Tour de France stage 4: Tadej Pogačar snares yellow with victory over the Galibier / As it happened

Tadej Pogačar took control of the Tour de France after he attacked near the summit of the Col du Galibier to win stage 4 in Valloire and move back into the yellow jersey. UAE Team Emirates imposed a relentless pace on the Galibier, whittling the front group down before Pogačar attacked 900m from the top.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) stayed within ten seconds of Pogačar on the final ramps of the Galibier and on the early, technical part of the descent, but the Slovenian stretched out his advantage on the drop into Valloire. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) were part of a group that joined Vingegaard in the finale, but they came home some 35 seconds down on Pogačar, who is chasing a Giro-Tour double.

Stage 3 - Tour de France stage 3: Biniam Girmay wins bunch sprint in Turin as Richard Carapaz takes yellow / As it happened

The 2024 Tour de France had barely begun before Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) made a page of cycling history with a bunch sprint victory in Turin, becoming the first ever Black African to win a stage of cycling’s biggest bike race. The Eritrean’s groundbreaking win came after a mass crash inside the final kilometres saw various sprinters blocked and unable to sprint, although as it was inside the ‘safety zone’, all riders were awarded the same time . Following the crash, the better stage placings for Richard Carapaz (EF Education-Easy Post) enabled the former Giro d’Italia winner to become Ecuador’s first ever Tour de France leader, tied on time with previous maillot jaune Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)   Stage 2 - Tadej Pogačar moves into maillot jaune as Kévin Vauquelin solos to victory on stage 2 / As it happened

Kévin Vauquelin (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) delivered back-to-back glorious breakaway days at the Tour de France for the home nation, in the Italian Grand Départ no less, netting the stage 2 victory to Bologna after attacking away solo from his fellow escapees on the famous San Luca climb with 14km to go.

As the GC fight unfolded some three minutes down, it was déjà vu from the 2023 edition as Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) exploded into life on the second ascent, forcing Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) into a response. Only Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) could catch back on after the descent for home into Bologna. Pogačar moved into the yellow jersey for the first time since the 2022 race after dropping Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) on the San Luca climb.

Stage 1 - Romain Bardet steals the show on stage 1 as Van den Broek helps power DSM-Firmenich-PostNL to first maillot jaune / As it happened

In what is due to be his  final Tour de France , Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) rolled back the years to take the most stunning win of his career on stage 1 of the 2024 race, surviving a charging peloton by the barest of margins to net him a first-ever stint in the yellow jersey.

Bardet crossed the line with teammate Frank van den Broek after the DSM duo put on a masterclass on the road from Florence to Rimini, completing a breathless finish with only a few metres to spare from Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) who took third.

How does the Tour de France work?

The 111th edition of the Tour de France starts in Florence, Italy, on Saturday, June 29 and ends three weeks later in Nice on Sunday, July 21. It is the first time the Tour starts in Italy. The Tour de France will not finish in Paris as it usually does. Instead, the finish is in Nice to avoid the preparations for the 2024 Olympics Games, which begin just a week later in Paris.

Riders have to cover the entire 2024 Tour de France route , passing through four nations – Italy, San Marino, France, and Monaco.

The rider who completes the distance in the fastest time wins the race, also known as the 'overall classification'. Each day, the rider who has completed the entire distance raced the quickest is the leader of the Tour de France, and wears a yellow jersey to signify him as such.

There is a second time classification for the best rider under the age of 26, the best young riders' classification, and he wears a white jersey if leading.

Riders also gain points for their position at the end of each day of racing, known as "stages". There is a secondary prize for the rider who gains the most points - the "points classification", and the leader each day wears a green jersey.

There are also points atop a select number of mountains for the first riders to cross the top, with more points available the harder the mountain is to climb. The leader of the mountains classification wears a white jersey with red polka dots.

Most days, the peloton race the distance of the Tour de France stage as a bunch. This year's Tour de France features two individual time trials, where riders race a set distance alone against the clock.

Tour de France favourites and contenders : Defending champion  Jonas Vingegaard  (Jumbo-Visma) won his second GC title last year and, if he can recover from his crash injuries in time, will be back to defend his title against top rival Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), who finished second overall. Vingegaard is likely to face a huge challenge from not just Pogačar, but also Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and former teammate turned rival Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe).

The 2024 Tour de France includes 52,230 metres of vertical gain across 3497.3km of climbs, sprints and time trialling from Italy into France, with fewer high climbs than in the past and shorter stages. 

It is a balanced three weeks of racing that includes eight flat stages, four mountain-top finishes and two individual time trials, the final test against the clock is a hilly time trial to Nice that could create suspense. The race has 25km of racing above 2,000 metres and 27 mountains classified as second, first, or HC.

Florence, Italy, will host the team presentation, and stage 1 will roll out from Piazzale Michelangelo to open the Grand Tour for the first time.

Defending Tour de France champion  Jonas Vingegaard will again have a strong Jumbo-Visma team to support his quest for a third title, but this time, former team leader Primož Roglič has turned to rival as he looks to give Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe top billing. Vingegaard will also face huge challenges from Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep). 

In the flat stages, look for last year's green jersey victor Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to contest for another title against Fabio Jakobsen , now with Team dsm-firmenich, and Caleb Ewan , now with Jayco-AlUIa. And fastman Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) is back for an 18th pro season to mix it up in the sprints, on the hunt for a record-breaking 35th Tour de France stage victory.

And there will be opportunities across the three weeks for breakaway riders to shine, including the likes of Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-QuickStep), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck).

Uitslagen Tour de France 2024 | Drie op een rij én nummer zes voor Pogacar na afsluitende tijdrit naar Nice

De Tour de France begon er in 2024 een weekje eerder aan en dat is maar goed ook. Na de Giro d'Italia stonden we te trappelen om eraan te beginnen, in misschien wel de best bezette Ronde van Frankrijk ooit. Tadej Pogacar , Primoz Roglic , Remco Evenepoel , Mathieu van der Poel , Jonas Vingegaard en Wout van Aert en een ongelofelijk sterk UAE-Team Emirates. In de Leiderstrui zet hier alle parcoursen en uitslagen nog eens op een rij!

Tour de France 2024: Parcours, beklimmingen, tijden en favorieten

De Tour de France nam de afgelopen jaren al een andere weg richting de zomer en dat is in 2024 niet anders. Kortere etappes, meer hoogtemeters en net als in de Giro d'Italia flink wat tijdritkilometers. Geen finish in Parijs ook, door de Olympische Spelen die daar van start gaan. We eindigen in Nice, veelzeggend met nóg meer bergen en een stevige race tegen de klok.

Na drie dagen Italië (waarbij we legendes als Gino Bartali, Marco Pantani en Fausto Coppi eren) hebben we al twee klimetappes gehad, met de Galibier die doodleuk al op dag vier volgt. De sprinters komen in de eerste week vier keer aan bod, op dag zeven gaan we 25,3 kilometer tijdrijden en op dag negen wacht het grind in Troyes. Op dag tien wordt het mogelijk waaieren en in de tweede week wachten het Centraal Massief en de Pyreneeën. In de laatste week trekken we via de Alpen naar Zuid-Frankrijk, waar we eindigen in Nice.

Etappe 1 - zaterdag 29 juni 2024: Florence - Rimini (206 km)

De openingsetappe was een serieus leuke rit, met spectaculair einde. Romain Bardet reed vanuit het peloton naar de kopgroep met daarin zijn ploegmakker Frank van den Broek toe, waarna de twee het in een thriller van een finale haalden ten opzichte van het peloton. Wout van Aert bleef achter op plek drie.

Etappe 2 - zondag 30 juni 2024: Cesenatico - Bologna (199,2 km)

Kon dag één nog alle kanten op, dat was op dag twee toch zeker ook het geval. Opnieuw kreeg een vroege vlucht de ruimte, waar Kévin Vauquelin van Arkéa - B&B Hotels de beste bleek. Jonas Vingegaard en Tadej Pogacar testten elkaar, waarbij enkel Remco Evenepoel en Primoz Roglic konden volgen. De rest verloor circa twintig tellen.

Etappe 3 - maandag 1 juli 2024: Plaisance - Turijn (230,8 km)

De laatste volledige rit op Italiaanse grond werd een lange zit. Dik 230 kilometer en onderweg geen hindernissen... Toch was een sprint tussen de klassieke spurters geen zekerheid, met een tricky finale in Turijn. Dat bleek, met een valpartij in de slotfase en daardoor een sprint van een kleine groep. Biniam Girmay sloeg verrassend toe, Richard Carapaz pakte het geel over van Tadej Pogacar.

Etappe 4 - dinsdag 2 juli 2024: Pinerolo - Valloire (139,6 km)

Was de Tourstart ooit zo zwaar? We wagen het te betwijfelen. Na drie lange en zware dagen in Italië, zwaaiden we de Laars van Europa uit met de Col du Galibier. Daar zorgde UAE-Team Emirates voor een moordend tempo, met een aanval van Tadej Pogacar tot gevolg. De Sloveen kwam met tien seconden voorsprong boven op Jonas Vingegaard en bouwde deze in de afzink uit tot driekwart minuut, waarmee hij een eerste tik uitdeelde in deze Tour.

Etappe 5 - woensdag 3 juli 2024: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne - Saint-Vulbas (177,4 km)

Die arme sprinters hebben deze Tour al flink moeten afzien, maar worden op dag vijf beloond met de twee sprintetappe. Met slechts twee klimmetjes van vierde categorie onderweg kon gesproken worden van een typische Touretappe. Nadat de twee koplopers op ruim dertig kilometer van de finish werd ingelopen, ging het peloton in volle vaart naar een massasprint, een hectische. Uit alle hectiek kwam Mark Cavendish uiteindelijk als winnaar uit de bus. Het was zijn 35ste ritzege in de Tour, waarmee hij nu het record van meeste etappezeges op zijn naam heeft staan, en niet moeer hoeft te delen met wielerlegende Eddy Merckx.

Etappe 6 - donderdag 4 juli 2024: Mâcon - Dijon (163,5 km)

Nog een sprintkans, de derde in zes dagen tijd! Reken er maar op dat de kopgroep hier niet al te veel ruimte gaat krijgen, want zulke biljartvlakke etappes krijgen de sprintersploegen in deze Tour niet al te vaak.

Etappe 7 - vrijdag 5 juli 2024: Nuits-Saint-Georges - Gevrey-Chambertin (25,3 km, tijdrit)

Een heerlijke tijdrit voor de echte specialisten op dag zeven, die absoluut niet teleurstelde. De Grote Vier maakten hun status meer dan waar, maar Remco Evenepoel was namens Soudal Quick-Step toch echtd e allergrootste. Tadej Pogacar behield het geel.

Etappe 8 - zaterdag 6 juli 2024: Semur-en-Auxois - Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises (183,4 km)

Daags na de individuele tijdrit lijkt er een perfecte kans te komen voor de vluchters, misschien wel voor de eerste keer in deze Tour. Het gaat de hele dag op en af, waarbij het heel lastig zal worden voor sprintersploegen om de boel te controleren. Een razendsnelle etappe met een stevige strijd om de kopgroep zou weleens in het verschiet kunnen liggen.

Etappe 9 - zondag 7 juli 2024: Troyes - Troyes (199 km)

Dit was de dag waar al lang over gesproken werd. Het werd een strijd op twee fronten, met Anthony Turgis van TotalEnergies die de zege pakte nadat Jasper Stuyven (Lidl-Trek) in de laatste kilometer werd teruggepakt. Ondanks meerdere pogingen van Tadej Pogacar bleven de klassementsmannen bij elkaar.

Etappe 10 - dinsdag 9 juli 2024: Orléans - Saint-Amand-Montrond (187,3 km)

De tiende etappe werd bij de presentatie van het parcours aangeduid als mogelijke rit met waaiergeweld. De wind gaf echter niet thuis en zodoende zou er gesprint worden, er was geen ontkomen aan. Alpecin-Deceuninck had uiteindelijk de sprinttrein het beste op orde. Mathieu van der Poel rolde de rode loper uit, waarna Jasper Philipsen naar zijn eerste overwinning van deze Tour spurtte.

Etappe 11 - woensdag 10 juli 2024: Évaux-les-Bains - De Lioran (211 km)

De Tour de France zoekt de ritten van 200 kilometer of meer niet per se op, maar op dag elf konden ze niet anders. Ze wilden een uitdagende finale, dus moest er een logische lijn getrokken worden tussen Évaux-les-Bains en De Lioran. In een waanzinnig wielergevecht kwamen de besten bovendrijven en won Jonas Vingegaard verrassend van Tadej Pogacar.

Etappe 12 - donderdag 11 juli 2024: Aurillac - Villeneuve-sur-Lot (203,6 km)

Met een lastige openingsfase bood de twaalfde etappe kansen voor de avonturiers, maar ook de sprintersploegen hadden de rit met rood omcirkeld. Het koersverloop bleek uiteindelijk in het voordeel van de sprinters. Voor de sprint was er echter een flinke valpartij, bij een verkeerseiland. Primoz Roglic was één van de slachtoffers. Zijn rechterschouder was flink geraakt en hij verloor ruim twee minuten in het klassement. In de sprint was het voor de derde keer Biniam Girmay die raak schoot. Hij verstevigde daarmee zijn leiding in het puntenklassement.

Etappe 13 - vrijdag 12 juli 2024: Agen - Pau (165,3 km)

Wat is een Tour de France zonder Pau? Nou, dat moeten de organisatoren ook gedacht hebben. Met de Pyreneeën in aantocht kon een bezoekje aan de stad niet ontbreken. De etappe draaide uit op een slijtageslag aan een razendsnel tempo. Door de aanwezigheid van Adam Yates in een omvangrijke kopgroep was het alle hens aan dek in het peloton. Nadat de situatie na een kilometers lange en ziedende achtervolging was rechtgezet, scheurde het peloton door waaiers. Uiteindelijk sprintte nog een flink peloton om de overwinning. Jasper Philipsen klopte in de sprint nipt Wout van Aert en boekte zodoende zijn tweede ritzege.

Etappe 14 - zaterdag 13 juli 2024: Pau - Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet (151,9 km)

De Pyreneeën vormden in deze Tour de France een tweeluik, met op de zaterdag een heuse D-Day voor de klassementsmannen. De finish lag na de Tourmalet en Lary-Soulan op Pla d'Adet. Het werd de dag van UAE Team Emirates en kopman Tadej Pogacar. De sterrenformatie legde het peloton een stevig tempo op en deelde uit op de slotklim. Adam Yates demarreerde op bevel van zijn kopman, die later met een verschroeiende demarrage naar zijn ploegmaat overstak. Jonas Vingegaard kon zijn ontketende rivaal niet volgen. Pogacar won de etappe en liep 43 seconden uit op Vingegaard in het klassement.

Etappe 15 - zondag 14 juli 2024: Loudenvielle - Plateau de Beille (197,7 km)

Deel twee in de Pyreneeën was langer, onderweg minder zwaar, maar met aankomst op Plateau de Beille wel episch en mythisch. Het kwam tot het langverwachte duel tussen Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard, welke die eerste glansrijk wist af te ronden.

Etappe 16 - dinsdag 16 juli 2024: Gruissan - Nimes (188,6 km)

De etappe naar Nimes was de laatste kans voor de pure sprinters, en daar waren de aanvallers zich ook bewust van. Ze kozen ervoor hun krachten te sparen en zodoende was er van een ontsnapping geen sprake. Thomas Gachignard (TotalEnergies) probeerde het nog even solo na de tussensprint, maar was bij lange na niet opgewassen tegen de sprintersploegen. In de technische finale ging groenetruidrager Biniam Girmay vervolgens onderuit. Alpecin-Deceuninck kwam uit de chaos met de beste lead-out naar voren en lanceerde Jasper Philipsen naar zijn derde etappezege.

Beklimming 112,6 km: CÔTE DE FAMBETOU (1,2 km aan 5,0%)

Etappe 17 - woensdag 17 juli 2024: Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateau - Superdévoluy (177,8 km)

Het peloton legde zichzelf op de pijnbank in de zeventiende etappe. Nadat dat benen door kort waaierrijden al waren warmgedraaid, volgde een ziedende strijd om de ontsnapping. Vrijwel het hele peloton wilde mee. Na een boeiend gevecht van ruim honderd kilometer streed een kopgroep en een achtervolgende groep van meer dan veertig man om de ritzege. In de lastige slotfase bleek RIchard Carapaz de sterkste. Hij won zodoende zijn eerste Touretappe. In de strijd om het klassement pakten Remco Evenepoel en Tadej Pogacar respectievelijk twaalf en twee seconden op Jonas Vingegaard.

Etappe 18 - donderdag 18 juli 2024: Gap -Barcelonnette (179,5 km)

Een grote kopgroep koos voor de aanval vandaag. Daarbij geen Mathieu van der Poel, maar wel Wout van Aert. De Belg was op papier de snelste van de vluchters, maar wist uiteindelijk niet mee te doen om de ritzege. Een landgenoot van Van Aert kon dat wel: Victor Campenaerts. De renner van Lotto-Dstny had nog een zeer sterk eindschot in de benen en sprintte zodoende naar zijn eerste Tour-ritwinst. Bij de klassementsmannen gebeurde weinig vandaag: daar zijn geen verschillen ontstaan.

Etappe 19 - vrijdag 19 juli 2024: Embrun - Isola 2000 (144,6 km)

Vandaag gingen de heren coureur met 2.802 meter naar het dak van de Tour op de Cime de la Bonette en toppen het af met de klim naar Isola 2000. In de vlucht van de dag wisten de mannen van Visma | Lease a Bike hun slag te slaan, met Matteo Jorgenson en Wilco Kelderman. Die laatste zette zijn Amerikaanse ploeggenoot op de laatste klim, op weg naar de ritzege. Maar - wie anders dan - Tadej Pogacar soleerde vanuit de groep der favorieten en knalde naar een nieuwe ritzege. Remco Evenepoel en Jonas Vingegaard konden niet volgen, en passeerde gezamenlijk de meet als respectievelijk vijfde en zesde.

Beklimmingen 42,6 km: COL DE VARS (18,8 km aan 5,7%) 87,5 km: CIME DE LA BONETTE (22,9 km aan 6,9%) 144,6 km: ISOLA 2000 (16,1 km aan 7,1%)

Etappe 20 - zaterdag 20 juli 2024: Nice - Col de la Couillole (132,8 km)

De loodzware rit van vrijdag werd een dag later ogenschijnlijk gekopieerd, met opnieuw ruim 4500 hoogtemeters. Een verwoede strijd om de dagvlucht mondde uit op een sterke kopgroep met onder anderen Wilco Kelderman, Romain Bardet, Enric Mas en Richard Carapaz. Die laatstgenoemde wist dankzij de bergpunten op de Col de Turini en de Col de la Colmiane de bollentrui veilig te stellen. Mas en Carapaz bleken de sterkste twee van de mannen vooraan, maar omdat zij niet voor elkaar onder bleken te doen konden de Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard (mede dankzij werk van Soudal - Quick Step) vlak voor de top aansluiten. Hoewel het vanochtend niet zijn plan was, pakte veelvraat Pogacar dit cadeau maar al te graag uit en won hij zijn vijfde rit van deze Tour.

Beklimmingen 24,7 km: COL DE BRAUS (10,0 km aan 6,6%) 59,8 km: COL DE TURINI (20,7 km aan 5,7%) 95,9 km: COL DE LA COLMIANE (7,5 km aan 7,1%) 132,8 km: COL DE LA COUILLOLE (15,7 km aan 7,1%)

Etappe 21 - zondag 21 2024: Monaco - Nice (33,7 km, tijdrit)

Een tijdrit als finish, wat héérlijk!! Een heel pittige race tegen de klok richting Nice, met een klim van 8,1 kilometer erin. Op en af, met alleen in het begin en slot een kans om de grote motor boven te halen. Die motor was, zoals de twee dagen hiervoor, bij Tadej Pogacar al goed op stoom. De Sloveen liet zien niet zomaar de gele trui te dragen, en snelde naar een toptijd op de boulevard van Nice. Vingegaard en Evenepoel moesten meer dan een minuut toegeven.

De Tour de France 2024 gaat beginnen. Hoe je dit jaar de Tour volgt? Natuurlijk live bij KPN. Op zaterdag 29 juni staan de beste wielrenners aan de start, waarbij alles draait om het veroveren van die felbegeerde Gele Trui. Er wordt dit jaar gestart in Florence in Italië. De Tour de France eindigt dit jaar niet in Parijs, maar op 21 juli in een individuele tijdrit van Monaco naar Nice. Ontdek hier hoe je overal kan kijken en wanneer welke rit gereden wordt.

Wanneer begint de Tour de France van 2024?

Ben je benieuwd waar en wanneer de Tour de France 2024 start? Pak dan je agenda er maar bij, want we praten je helemaal bij. De Tour de France start dit jaar op zaterdag 29 juni 2024 in Florence. Ja, je leest het goed, in buurland Italië. Het is inmiddels een traditie dat de start van de Tour de France ieder jaar ergens anders is en vaak in het buitenland. Waar en wanneer de start volgend jaar plaatsvind is zelfs al bekend, dat zal in de stad Lille zijn.

De laatste etappe van de Tour de France 2024

De laatste etappe van de Tour de France eindigt altijd in Parijs. Ja, normaal wel. Maar dit jaar vindt er een ander evenement in Parijs plaats, namelijk de Olympische spelen. Op de laatste dag van de Tour wordt daarom dit keer gereden van Monaco naar Nice. Geen lange optocht met champagne, maar een individuele tijdrit. Wanneer de Tour de France 2024 beslist is kan dus nog spannend worden. Niet elke deelnemer is gespecialiseerd in de tijdrit, dat kan nog flinke sprongen in het klassement betekenen  

Deelnemers Tour de France 2024

Aan de Tour de France 2024 doen in totaal 176 renners mee, verdeeld over 22 ploegen. De grootte kanshebbers voor de overwinning zijn voor veel wielerfans de bekende namen. De grootste favoriet is ongetwijfeld Pogacar. De Sloveen was in de ronde van Italië al in topvorm. De eerdere winnaar van de Tour, de Deen Vingegaard, was lange tijd geblesseerd na een valpartij. Toch heeft zijn ploeg ervoor gekozen hem mee te nemen. Dat betekent dat hij als een van de kanshebbers gezien moet worden. Ook de derde kanshebber, Primoz Roglic, was tot voor kort geblesseerd. Hij viel ook in de grote valpartij, waarbij Vingegaard en Evenepoel uitvielen. Toch doet ook Roglic mee aan deze Tour en moet ook hij gerekend worden tot de deelnemers die een goede kans maken op de zege.

Net als elk jaar doen er ook een flink aantal Nederlanders mee aan de Tour de France. De bekendste namen zijn ongetwijfeld Mathieu van der Poel, Dylan Groenewegen, Wout Poels, Fabio Jakobsen en Wilco Kelderman.

Wanneer kan ik de Tour de France live kijken?

Dit jaar start de Tour de France op 29 juni in Florence. De laatste etappe is op zondag 21 juli, wanneer de wielrenners finishen in Nice. De rustdagen vinden plaats op 8 en 15 juli. Op de andere dagen rijden de toppers tijdsritten, bergklimmen, sprints en ploegenritten. Bijna iedere dag genieten van wielrenners in actie dus!

Tussen Florence en Nice leggen de wielrenners bijna 3500 kilometer af in 21 etappes.

Rusten de renners tijdens de rustdag in de Tour?

Na 9 dagen koers is het tijd voor de rustdag in de Tour de France. De renners kunnen dan eindelijk rusten. Maar is dat ook echt zo?

Na negen dagen fietsen door het Baskenland en het Zuid-Westen van Frankrijk mogen de renners eindelijk rusten. Even een dag geen getetter in je oor van de ploegleider, even geen hectiek in het nerveuze peloton, even geen zorgen om waaiers of stress om niet te vallen voordat de laatste 3 km zijn ingegaan. Nee, even heerlijk met de benen omhoog of bommetjes maken in het zwembad. Of toch niet?

Persconferentie op de rustdag

Op de rustdag in de Tour de France krijgt de pers de gelegenheid om de renners het hemd van het lijf te vragen. Waar ga je tijd winnen? Waarom heb je de gele trui niet weggegeven? Wat is de tactiek van de ploeg? Hoeveel massasprints gaan er nog gereden worden? Renners verschijnen op de officiële persconferentie, moeten een item maken voor de Avondetappe en ga zo maar door. En wat doen de knechten in de Tour de France? Die hebben het rustiger, maar voor de kopmannen is de rustdag een drukke dag.

Testen op corona

We zijn nog niet klaar met Corona. Helaas... In de Ronde van Zwitserland moest het halve peloton naar huis en ook nu zijn er al een aantal renners en/of begeleiders positief getest op Corona. Ook in de Tour de France 2023 zal testen tot het protocol behoren. Wellicht niet door de ASO opgelegd, maar de ploegen zullen zelf vast geen risico willen lopen. We zien niet voor niets weer meer dan genoeg mondkapjes in het peloton.

Bezoek van familie

Traditiegetrouw komt de familie langs op de rustdag. Even lekker relaxen met vrouw en kinderen nadat je ze ruim een week niet hebt gezien. Renners zijn veel van huis. Hoogtestages, trainingskampen, koersdagen etc. Dan is zo'n rustdag de mogelijkheid om weer even te genieten van het gezin. Even niet denken aan de zwaarste beklimmingen van de Tour de France 2023 .

Verkenning van de volgende etappe

Er zijn tegenwoordig nog maar weinig renners die tijdens de rustdag de hele dag op bed liggen. Er wordt vaak een klein rustig rondje gefietst of een deel van etappe 10 van de Tour de France wordt nog even verkend. Al hebben de meeste klassementsrenners de belangrijke etappes al ruim voor de Tour verkend.

Op bezoek bij de masseur/osteopaat

Zeker als er nog weinig uitvallers zijn en de verschillen nog klein zijn in het klassement, is het hectisch in het peloton en wordt er veel gevallen. De stramme lijven van de ongelukkigen in het peloton worden op de rustdag nog eens extra verzorgd. Fabio Jakobsen zal van alle renners wel het langst bij de masseur op de tafel liggen.

Lekker slapen

Als de renners na zo'n uitputtende rustdag dan eindelijk mogen gaan slapen, zijn er nog een aantal mensen binnen de wielerploeg aan het werk. De mechaniekers. Op de rustdag worden alle fietsen volledig gestript en weer opgebouwd. Niets wordt aan het toeval overgelaten. Deze mannen gaan laat slapen op de rustdag.

Na negen dagen koers hebben de renners in de Tour de France een dagje rust meer dan dik verdiend. Met nog twee weken te gaan zal het ook nodig zijn. Morgen staat bijvoorbeeld alweer stevige heuvelrit met vijf gecategoriseerde cols op het programma. Mis hier niets van de ontwikkelingen op de rustdag.

Why are Tour de France cyclist’s legs so veiny?

We’ve all got veins in our legs quite near to the skin surface, but they are hidden by a layer of fat just under the skin. 

Tour de France cyclist's legs appear to be uber-veiny for two main reasons: firstly, they have much less body fat than ‘ordinary’ people, and secondly, their veins and arteries have adapted to carry more blood around their bodies. The cardiovascular adaptations are numerous, but a large increase in vein and artery diameter is one of them. What do Tour de France riders do on their rest days?

They ride, and not just a little amble around the streets. Most will be on their bikes for two hours and some even more. 

In the early days of Team Sky, Russell Downing found out why after the first rest day of his Grand Tour debut in the 2011 Giro d’Italia: “It was a hard race, the weather was bad and by the first rest day I was really tired. The others asked if I was going with them, but it was cold and raining and I said I’d go on the turbo in the hotel basement instead. I did that for about 45 minutes, just very easy, then went back upstairs to lie down. Next day I was nailed for the whole stage, just hanging on. I was okay the day after, but I’d learnt my lesson and rode with the boys on the next rest day. If you don’t ride reasonably hard on the rest day , your body thinks you’ve stopped and switches off ready for deep recovery. You’ve got to keep it firing for the whole three weeks.” 

What is a soigneur in cycling and what are their duties during the Tour de France?

Soigneur is the French word for ‘carer’, and basically soigneurs care for riders. They prepare them for each stage, looking after them at the finish and back the hotel, with massage and rehab therapies. And they care in other ways too. 

Dirk Nachtergaele, a Belgian pro team soigneur for over 40 years says: “A soigneur is also like a priest. We are the one who riders can confide in, confident that anything they tell us goes no further. They can complain about another rider, the sports director even; they can talk about problems at home – anything. They know we will not tell anyone what they said. That role as confidante is as necessary in a team as being a skilled therapist.”   

How light and lean are the Tour de France climbers?

Double Tour de France stage winner, and now retired Irish pro rider Dan Martin was a climbing specialist. His racing weight was 62kg, which is light for his 5ft 9in height, but some shorter climbers weigh under 60kg. However, being super-light is no longer the preserve of the pure climbing specialists. Defending Tour champion Pogacar is the same height as Martin and only slightly heavier at around 66kg, while 2019 winner Egan Bernal , also 5ft 9in, is a true featherweight at just 60kg. 

The riders mentioned start the Tour de France with body fat percentages well below 10 per cent, but nutritionists are careful not to allow ‘cutting’ to go too far. 

In fact, it can be better to offload a little muscle, as Dr Rob Child, a performance biochemist who worked with several World Tour teams, explains: “It’s sometimes worth losing a bit of muscle to reduce weight because very low body fat has health implications. Tour de France performance is governed by the cardiovascular system, not by the maximum force applied to the pedals. Pro riders don’t need huge amounts of muscle to pedal at 400 watts for 20 or 30 minutes, and that’s often the key to performing well overall in the Tour. They need a highly developed cardiovascular system, not big muscles.” 

Why do Tour de France riders drink Coca-Cola?

Most team nutritionists would rather the riders didn’t drink coca cola, and some teams even forbid it.

That said, there’s also always one small can of coke in the musettes Trek-Segafredo gives its riders. Drinking a regular fizzy drink such as a cold can of coke after a stage is good for morale – and preserving positivity in a brutal three-week race is vital.

Of course, the most important nutritional consideration for riders is getting enough calories to meet the extreme demands of the race. If you’re wondering how they achieve that, here we look into what exactly goes into fuelling the riders of the Tour de France .

What do Tour de France riders do to recover between stages?

The standard of hotels used by the Tour has improved a lot in recent years, so that helps with sleep and recovery . Even so, teams provide further ‘home comforts’ by carrying all their own bedding, including mattresses and pillows. They also have their own washing machines in the team buses and equipment trucks. Everything is done to promote good sleeping habits and hygiene. 

Riders generally do room-share, partly through tradition but also because it’s good to have company. Pairings are decided diplomatically, though.

Why and how do riders warm up before each stage?

The ‘why’ is explained by double Tour stage winner Steve Cummings: “There are two races in every stage: the first is to get a breakaway established, and the second is to win the stage. If I saw a stage that suited me, one where a break might stay away and give me a chance to win, I’d focus on the first hour to 90 minutes, nothing else. Typically it was attack after attack right from the start, then a huge effort to get the break established. You had to be fully warmed up for that.” 

As to the ‘how’, a Tour warm-up is usually done on a turbo trainer, allowing the whole team to warm-up in one compact space, everyone controlling their effort. Ineos-Grenadiers’s deputy team principal Rod Ellingworth says: “The idea is to prepare the rider’s energy systems for a fast start. They ride steady but progressively harder for at least 20 minutes, then do five minutes of capacity work to open everything up. After that they pedal easily and try to stay loose.”

How much do riders have to eat to meet energy demands?

Riders can burn twice or even three times their usual calorie requirement during a hard day at the Tour. Nigel Mitchell, a nutritional consultant who worked extensively with WorldTour cycling teams, says: “At a Grand Tour, riders can burn more than 5,000kcal on a single stage, depending on the terrain, and that means consuming a huge amount, both off the bike at meal times and on it during the race, in the form of energy drinks, bars and gels.” To put 5,000kcal into perspective, it is roughly equivalent to four large McDonald’s BigMac meals. 

What do the riders eat after each stage?

 Does each rider have their own bespoke meals? Who does the cooking?  

Three questions, but they are related and so are the answers, which come from a former Tour de France rider, UAE Team Emirates former sports director and current race analyst Allan Peiper. The man who oversaw Tadej Pogačar’s first Tour de France win in 2020 told us: “Each rider has a bespoke meal plan based on any needs flagged up by team doctors and physiologists, and on any personal physiological quirks such as intolerances or allergies. The medics talk with nutritionists, and the nutritionists tailor meals to meet specific needs. Each team also has its own chef who works with the nutritionist to prepare tailor-made meals.” 

How heavy are the heaviest riders in the race, and how do they get over the mountains inside the time cut?

There are very few riders of over 80kg in the Tour de France nowadays. The limiter when climbing mountains is power-to-weight ratio, and if a rider is too bulky they cannot overcome the disadvantage, no matter how mighty their power output. The heaviest Tour de France rider since 2000 was the Swede Magnus Backstedt, who says: “I had to be the lightest I could be for the Tour, which was around 90kg, and as fit as I could be. But at my weight, every hill is steep, and the mountains were a real challenge. On mountain stages, I’d hang on to the peloton for as long as possible, then look for a good grupetto – that’s what we call the groups of non-climbers who ride together to get inside the time limits. Once in a grupetto with experienced riders, it was just a case of digging deep, sometimes very deep, and hanging on.” 

Grit and stubbornness get heavier riders up the mountains, but they have an advantage to deploy on the other side, going down. Tour stage winner Sean Yates was a tall, well-built rider, and he says: “You have to get good at descending if you are bigger. You can’t regain all the time you lost going up, but you can get some of it back by really going for it on the descents.”

What’s the relationship between rider age and Tour de France performance?

It used to be that riders developed into Tour contenders gradually over many years. Those youngsters who did take part would be expected to help the team and gain experience, and possibly even drop out after the first week. That’s all changed. Tadej Pogačar was just 21 when he first won in 2020, and Egan Bernal was 22 when he won in 2019. Pogačar’s coach Inigo San Millan has this to say about his rider’s prodigious ability: “He has extraordinary physiological characteristics, and the correct mental attributes, so he was already good enough to win at 21.” 

Until Bernal’s win four years ago, it was thought that riders reached their peak in terms of physiology, psychology and skill at around 26 or 27. According to Allan Peiper: “This may still be true, we just don’t know what the young winners we have now will be like when they are 27 or 28. Will they still be winning, or will the next generation have surpassed them?” At the other end of the scale, the oldest Tour winner of modern times was Cadel Evans in 2011, at the age of 34.  

What do the riders’ musettes contain?

Nothing very surprising, just a re-supply of the gels, drinks and energy bars. Musettes were more interesting in times gone by, when they contained cakes and tarts for energy, small ham and cheese baguettes for protein, and all manner of delights. The food was individually wrapped and packed by the soigneurs. The first female soigneur Shelley Verses, who worked for US team 7-Eleven in the 1980s, used to wrap her riders’ food in pages from Playboy magazine. “It was good for their morale,” she commented. 

Do Tour de France riders drink alcohol during the three weeks?

Yes, but not much. Stage wins might be celebrated with a glass of champagne, and sometimes a small glass of red wine is taken with the evening meal, but that’s as far as it goes. Teams have tried total bans on alcohol, but most allow small amounts to protect morale. 

All rather sensible – not like Tour riders from previous eras. In the early days of the race, riders drank wine and beer during stages because it was less of a threat to health than the contents of some of the primitive water supplies. Right up to the 1960s, some riders enjoyed a mid-Tour tipple or two. One of the most notorious stories is about the 1964 Andorran rest day when race leader Jacques Anquetil went to a party and indulged to such an extent he was hungover the next day and almost lost the race. 

How do Tour de France riders stay hydrated through sweltering long stages?

Nigel Mitchell tells us: “I get riders to start drinking as soon as they wake. I mix water with a little fruit juice in a big bottle, because that makes it more interesting than plain water, and I ask them to finish it before breakfast. They drink fruit juice with breakfast for the electrolytes, and another bottle of diluted fruit juice travelling to the stage start.

“During the stage, they drink from two bottles on the bike, one plain water and one energy drink, and they keep getting fresh bottles from the team car or support motorbikes. They get more fluid in a protein shake after the stage, and an electrolyte drink if it’s been hot. I also provide rice cakes, which contain quite a lot of moisture from the water absorbed by the rice during cooking. 

“Even then, we still check on hydration by checking the rider’s weight each morning. If they are well hydrated, they will stay at pretty much the same weight throughout the Tour.” 

What’s the role of the bottle-carrying domestiques in the Tour de France?

The cycling community uses a lot of French words, with domestiques being one of them. Transporting bottles from the team car to team-mates in the peloton is just one of many duties carried out by domestiques. 

This supply chain is overseen by the sports directors, as Allan Peiper explains: “The sports directors have real-time information in the team cars on each rider’s performance metrics. They can tell if anyone is having a bad day, and they won’t ask that rider to drop back to the team car and pick up bottles, because it could just push them further into the red.” 

Each team has several domestiques and their role, although complicated in execution, is straightforward in mission. It’s to put the team’s leader (or leaders) in the best position to challenge for victory.

That could involve riding at the front to control the peloton’s pace, leading riders who’ve punctured back to the action, chasing when a breakaway needs to be brought back, leading out sprinters at the end of stages, setting the pace in the mountains, and many other jobs. They even perform a very unglamorous function in comfort stops.

In terms of FTP and watts per kilo, what does it take to be a GC contender at the Tour de France?

In 2020 the power meter supplier to Team UAE Emirates, Stages, released the following information on Tour de France winner Tadej Pogačar’s performance metrics from Stage Nine, a mountainous stage in the Pyrenees: 

Time: 3:58:16 

Average power: 301W (4.5W/kg) 

Normalised power: 351W (5.4W/kg) 

Peak 5min power: 473W (7.2W/kg) 

Peak 20min power: 429W (6.5W/kg) 

To put these figures in context, good amateur racers (i.e. cat two) are capable of five-minute power in the region of 4-5W/kg and 20-minute power of 3.5-4.1W/kg. Even for committed amateurs who train hard, a huge gulf in performance separates them from the likes of Pogačar. 

Do Tour de France riders use dietary supplements. If so, which ones?

They need lots of protein to help recover, so they drink recovery drinks and eat protein bars to augment the protein they get from food. They sometimes consume vitamin and mineral supplements too. Dr Rob Child says: “I try to meet a rider’s needs through well-cooked, nutritious foods, but I always know what their nutritional state is in detail. We take regular blood tests, and I can use supplements to make good any deficiencies.”  

Do riders pee during the Tour de France?

If the race pace isn’t too high, riders can stop by the side of the road, having picked a place where nobody can see – which can be difficult. Peeing on the move is a skill Tour de France pros must have in their toolbox. It’s tricky, as it’s impossible to pedal while peeing, so it’s up to the poor domestique to ride alongside and with a hand on the back to maintain forward momentum. 

And here’s how difficult peeing can be…In 1965 British pro Vin Denson rode the 1965 Bordeaux-Paris, a 365-mile single day race, in support of the race winner Jacques Anquetil. As he approached Paris late in the afternoon, Denson realised he hadn’t peed since the start at 2.30am, and he was bursting. He stopped at the side of the road, but found he couldn’t pee at all, even though his bladder was full. Desperate, he shouted to the stationary team car and his soigneur got out, poured a flask of hot coffee down the front of Denson’s shorts, and Denson recalled: “I went like a fountain – it was glorious!”

After a bruising weekend in the Pyrénées, the peloton breathes a sigh of relief Monday with the arrival of the second of the two scheduled Tour de France rest days.

Even mountaintop punisher Tadej Pogačar was relishing Sunday the prospect of a day off.

“I’m looking forward to the rest day,” Pogačar said after he blazed solo to the top of the Plateau de Beilles. “I hope for a good ride with the boys, stopping with a good coffee or something.”

The unique mash-up of a lay-in, some doom-scrolling, an interval session, and some pesky press meets make for a welcome change of pace after two days of mountainous pain.

“We can reset a little bit, not too much, and we can go full gas for the final week,” Pogačar said Sunday after he wreaked havoc on everybody, all weekend.

Like Pogačar suggests, a rest day at a grand tour is a day “off” in name alone.

In reality, it’s another day at work, but one with looser rules.

“The rest day is an art, not a science. Every rider does it differently to fit their preference. As long as it works for them, we’re happy,” sport scientist and Tudor Pro Cycling staffer James Spragg told Velo .

For Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard , and the rest of the Tour peloton, finding a non-filthy French coffee before a few hours in front of Netflix is as good as it gets on a day that’s caught between neutral and first gear.

“It’s not really a day off. It’s nice to lay in bed a couple more hours rather than sit on the team bus with a long transfer to the next hotel, but you cannot switch off from everything happening in the race,” Ineos Grenadiers veteran Michal Kwiatkowski told the Sungod sunglasses blog.

“It isn’t a holiday – it’s just a short truce,” Kwiatkowski said.

The art of a rest day ride: A four-hour flagellation or a flat white cruise

The Tour de France circus continues spinning Monday as it prepares for the final push toward Nice’s Côte d’Azur.

Mechanics tune and tinker with a truckful of team bikes. Components are checked for wear and tear and drivetrains are treated to some added TLC.

Across the parking lot, drivers clean down buses and fill up on fuel.

Hotel bedrooms become board rooms while team directors sketch out racing strategies or wrangle with rider agents over contract deals.

It’s no day of rest for the riders either.

The Gruissan start town of Tuesday’s 16th stage and nearby cities Narbonne and Bézieres will be mobbed with bleary-eyed racers tapping out of hotel foyers for a leg-loosening ride.

Probably 90 percent of the peloton will be on their bikes Monday, most for around 60-90 minutes, some for maybe four times that.

Those that do ride won’t go entirely easy either.

“We mostly let riders decide what to do on the bike unless there’s a certain demand for the next day’s stage,” Spragg said of a grand tour rest day.

“A lot of riders do a type of ‘pre-race activation’ session to keep the engine going, some are happy just easing to the coffee shop and back,” the Tudor Pro Cycling performance guru said.

“Recently, most of our riders feel they benefit from some short, hard efforts to keep their legs feeling ‘open.’”

Data collated by social media sleuth Velofacts from last Monday’s rest day shows how the wild variation in the peloton’s concept of a “leisurely” ride.

For Jayco AlUla climber Chris Harper, it was a four-hour, 137km tour of the Loiret region that would have left many of us on the couch for days to come.

“It’s pretty normal for me, pre-race or rest day, I probably do a little more than other guys,” Harper told Cycling Weekly of his “rest day” ride last Monday.

“It’s an individual thing, some guys like to chill out and I feel better if I go out and spin the legs for a little bit.”

Personal preferences also play into how strenuous a “day off” ride should feel.

Many riders scatter leg-opening sprints or short VO2 max efforts into their day off to keep their engines humming hot.

Even cut-off-defying Mark Cavendish might be opening up his top-end Monday after his ordeal on the Plateau de Beilles as he eyes the Tour’s final guaranteed sprint finish Tuesday.

Whether in reality or just in mentality, “openers” should stop a rider feeling “blocked” when the racing restarts out of Gruissan for stage 16.

“We don’t really know what can cause a rider to be ‘blocked.’ It’s not very well studied or understood from a scientific perspective,” Spragg told Velo .

“The most important question is that a rider knows how they respond to a day off,” Spragg continued. “Do they need a full rest day, do they need to do a pre-race type of ‘opener’, or something else?

“It’s something they should have picked up over years of training, but it’s not always easy to get it ‘right.'”

Napping, Netflix, and counting down to the next stage

However long the ride, the rest of a rider’s day is devoted to recovery – refueling, rehab, and R&R.

Many might enjoy visits from loved ones who travel from across the globe to see their husbands, partners, and fathers.

Staffers loosen meal times and push unnecessary meetings off a rider’s agenda with the mission of keeping them restful.

Napping, Netflix, reading, and doom-scrolling feels like a luxury for a peloton that’s otherwise on the go for 12+ hours during the Tour’s 21 racing days.

“Unlucky” team leaders like Pogačar, Vingegaard, and Remco Evenepoel will see their slumbers interrupted by the requirement to sit in front of a laptop screen to field questions from the world’s media.

Equally painfully, any rider who’s been particularly banged by the past two weeks might spend extra time at the table of a team chiropractor charged with unkinking spines and mobilizing mangled muscles.

“The rest day is all in the head. Some people believe it’s about doing efforts in training or about sweating this much, or nutrition or this and that. But really, it’s a combination of all those things,” Kwiatkowski said.

“Personally I try and do as much recovery as I can,” he continued. “I minimize the number of hard efforts on the bike. I believe how I prepare my mind is the most important thing.”

Rest day meals look much the same as any other day on Tour , but are eaten at a slower pace.

Nutritionists and chefs might focus more on recovery-boosting proteins and healthful nutrients, but have to remain mindful of the next day’s stage.

With Tuesday’s romp into Nîmes looking like a nailed-on sprint, “carb loads” will be lowered from the monster meal plans that powered the peloton over the Pyrénées.

Once dinner is done, it’s a fast downhill to the Tour’s racing restart.

It’s a descent some might wish was a little less fast.

“In a way, you are into the rhythm and keep racing, but it’s also nice to have an easy day. It goes by quicker than you realize,” Uno-X Mobility racer Magnus Cort told Velo . “We might sleep in a bit longer, you go for a training ride, and come back and have lunch.

“Then there will be some media interviews, and then massage and treatment, then it’s day over,” he said. “Unfortunately we are not lounging on the beach.”
