“I guarantee this will be the greatest concert of your life,” says Kanye West, with typical modesty, at one point in this first London Watch the Throne show. For fans of the pair, he might not be too far off the mark.

When Kanye and Jay-Z - friends, collaborators and contenders for the throne of the kingdom of hip-hop - announced that they would be taking their 2011 collaboration on tour, perhaps the best that fans could expect was a recreation of that album’s brazen, accomplished, glossy production.

What the Watch The Throne tour has turned into, though, is a bicephalous celebration of two of hip-hop’s best back catalogues. That set-up provides the basis for a tag-team approach to proceedings. The show starts with Jay-Z in the middle of the arena on a square, rising stage, Kanye – in a dubious leather pants/skirt combo is on something similar at the stage end. The pair rap “H.A.M” and “Who Gon Stop Me” over a gulf of fans as videos of rottweilers and sharks light the ground beneath their feet.

Then Jay-Z disappears and returns to the main stage for the pair to sing “Otis” – their sample-tastic reworking of Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness”. Then - for over two hours - the pair, tag-in and tag-out of the stage. One minute it’s Kanye doing “Jesus Walks” and “Flashing Lights”, the next it’s Jay-Z doing “IZZO (H.O.V.A)” and “Empire State of Mind”.

Both have weaknesses, but the match-up covers for both. Kanye has the better feel for the stadium spectacular. His “spontaneous” stopping of “All The Lights” is actually something he’s done on almost every night on the tour but it adds an air of uncertainty to the slick, pyrotechnic-enhanced set. He’s arguably got the better songs too, with cuts from his stupendous My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy like “Power” and “Monster” providing peaks in the bounteous 39-song set. Jay-Z, on the other hand, is clearly the more accomplished rapper and performer.

Kanye’s five-minute auto-tuned wig-out during “Runaway”, is the evening’s sole flat-note. Most moments are enthralling. No less so than the closing gimmick in which the pair repeat Watch The Throne’s “Niggas In Paris” for as many times as they feel like. London gets four repeats here – which is about par for the tour. It’s a bit daft, but it’s a fun way to end things and, frankly, these monsters of rap can do what they like.

Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne tour to hit London tonight

Music preview: Jay-Z and Kanye West’s eyeball-scorching Watch The Throne tour reaches London’s O2 arena tonight, giving the pair’s ‘luxury rap’ a suitably grandiose setting.

Jay-Z, Kanye West, Otis music video

What do you give an epic ‘luxury rap’ album that has everything? A star-spangled, continent-striding live tour, of course.

Watch The Throne, the hip hop union of US megastars Jay-Z and Kanye West, was released in lavish style last August. Despite a few ego-clashing rumours, the duo’s bolshy rap styles merged with surprising harmony and humour, as well as a typically smart ear for production.

Highlight cuts included the vintage soul backdrop of Otis, slices of operatic and electronic effects on HAM, and No Church In The Wild (which samples James Brown and Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera). Global recession or not, they also shared a similar dedication to the project, as Jay-Z remarked to a New York radio station: ‘I kind of want to spend a gazillion dollars.’

After a storming run of Stateside dates, it’s clear that the Watch The Throne live experience hasn’t scrimped on spectacle. Judging by those rammed concerts, audiences on the British leg of the tour can expect an eyeball-blistering light show (including fireballs and lasers that suggest someone had an epiphany at an Ibiza club night). The set list intersperses Watch The Throne collaborations with respective classic hits (Jay-Z’s crowd-rousing 99 Problems; West’s Diamonds From Sierra Leone injecting a hint of social consciousness amid the bling).

London’s O2 arena should provide a perfectly bombastic setting but even with just two main figures on stage, this is really a premium-brand show with stadium-sized ambition. Hova and Yeezy flaunt real deal showmanship; heck, these guys aren’t simply state-of-the-art holograms. This weekend, they’re all hyped up and feeling flush.

Tonight until Tue, The O2.  www.theo2.co.uk

Kanye West and Jay-Z’s ‘Watch the Throne’: A Track-by-Track Breakdown

By Matthew Perpetua

Matthew Perpetua

After months of delays , teases and closely guarded advance listening sessions , Watch the Throne , Kanye West and Jay-Z’ s first collaborative album as the Throne, has finally gone on sale . It’s full of detailed tracks crafted by West and a small army of top hip-hop producers and dense rhymes that vacillate wildly between introspection and social consciousness – not to mention an obsession with high-end luxury goods so intense that it seems over-the-top even for a rap record. (There is some bitter irony in the fact that this record happened to arrive on the day of a major stock market collapse.)  It’s still to early to fully process all of it, but here’s a rundown of what to expect.

1. “No Church in the Wild” (featuring Frank Ocean) Odd Future singer Frank Ocean and The-Dream lend their voices to the album’s grim opener, which sets the mood with a gnarled guitar sample before jacking some sounds from James Brown’s “Don’t Tell A Lie About Me and I Won’t Tell the Truth About You.” Jay-Z has said that this is one of his favorites on the record, and it’s easy to understand why – West and 88-Keys’ track brings out the best in both emcees.

2. “Lift Off” Beyoncé joins the boys for a synth-heavy banger that takes off like a rocket and eventually arrives at a spacey, blissful resolution. It all but demands a sci-fi music video featuring Beyoncé as a sexy astronaut.

3. “N**gas in Paris” Jay and Ye come in hard over a slow, menacing beat and icy synthesizer notes, but regardless, this cut is mostly memorable for including an unexpected sample of dialogue from the underrated Will Ferrell/Jon Heder ice-skating comedy  Blades of Glory . “No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative,” says Ferrell with deep conviction, essentially summing up the art of hip-hop lyrics.

4. “Otis” West transforms Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness” into slick “luxury rap.” Jay-Z and Kanye turn in strong verses, but Redding’s chopped-up shouts and hollers are the main attraction.

5. “Gotta Have It” While some tracks on Watch the Throne give the star rappers turns at the mic, “Gotta Have It” is pure tag-team hip-hop, with the two trading off verses and finishing each other’s lines. The enthusiasm level is one of the highest on the album.

6. “New Day” Jay and Kanye offer words of wisdom to their unborn sons over a RZA production that strays far from his usual Wu-Tang aesthetic, but complements the rapper’s introspective words with mellow, lightly psychedelic synthesizer tones.

7. “That’s My Bitch” La Roux’s Elly Jackson sings the hook on a rumbling number that emphasizes West at his most abrasive, with him spitting out his “HAH!?” vocal tic like an irritable goose.

Sean Combs Offers Private Plane, Mansion, Kids’ Passports in Bail Plea

Chester bennington’s mom: ‘i feel betrayed’ by linkin park, republicans are livid about … the fed lowering interest rates, trump’s pick for nc gov. called himself a ‘black nazi,’ mlk ‘worse than a maggot’.

8. “Welcome to the Jungle” If you were expecting this cut to sample Guns N’ Roses, much less sound anything at all like Guns N’ Roses, you’re in for a major disappointment. As a consolation, Jay-Z describes himself as the “black Axl Rose” as he spits over a jittery, treble-heavy Swizz Beatz production.

9. “Who Gon Stop Me” “This is something like the Holocaust / millions of our people lost,” West raps over a heavy dubstep bass line, his voice processed into a sinister, tinny growl. Jay-Z holds his own, but the experimental track is more flattering to Ye’s vocal talents.

10. “Murder to Excellence” A lot of the cuts on Watch the Throne sound like Kanye tracks featuring Jay-Z, but this one definitely comes across as more of a Jay-Z thing.  The song is essentially a diptych, with Kanye ruminating on black-on-black violence in the first half and Hov delivering a “celebration of black excellence” on the more jubilant second half.

11. “Made in America” Frank Ocean returns to sing a hook that pays tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, Malcolm X, Betty Shabazz and, of course, the sweet baby Jesus on the album’s most serene track. Both rappers deliver sentimental verses, but Ocean carries most of the emotional weight here.

12. “Why I Love You” West associate Mr. Hudson sings the hook on this moody track that alternates between a towering, TV on the Radio-esque chorus and hazy, synth-heavy verses.

13. “Illest Motherf**ker Alive” From this point onward, it’s all “bonus tracks.” While it makes sense to put some space between the album proper and the extra songs, it’s curious that “Illest Motherf**ker Alive” opens with three solid minutes of silence.

Zach Bryan Deactivates X/Twitter, Apologizes to Taylor Swift After 'Drunkenly Comparing' Her to Kanye West

Kendrick lamar is over it, watch kanye west perform 'everybody' with his 4 children.

14. “H.A.M.” The album’s first single has been downgraded to a bonus track. The bombastic Lex Luger production definitely seems a bit out of place on the record, but Kanye steps out of his comfort zone as a rapper and goes full-on aggro.

15. “Primetime” This one is about as subdued as you can get with a big boom-bap beat.  The contrast between that aggression and the melodic piano sample sets the tone for some particularly conflicted lyrics from Kanye about materialism.

16. “The Joy” The deluxe version of Watch the Throne concludes with a Pete Rock-produced track that splices together samples from Curtis Mayfield’s “The Makings of You” and Syl Johnson’s “Different Strokes” to build one of the loosest songs on the album. The rappers follow the nodding beat, but the abstracted snippets of singing, sirens, gutteral shouts and audience noise floating through the mix adds up to something entirely mesmerizing.

Jay-Z + Kanye West Announce International Watch the Throne Tour

Much like their celebrated single, 'N----s in Paris,' Jay-Z and Kanye West will ball so hard across the pond on their European leg of the Watch the Throne tour.

The rap tandem's trek kicks off on May 20 at London's 02 arena. They will hit major cities in Switzerland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden before they visit Paris for two nights on June 1 and 2. The entire jaunt wraps up on June 13 in Birmingham, England.

It would be interesting to see if Hov and Yeezy will break the record of performing 'N----s In Paris' at their Paris show in June. For the record, the Grammy-winning duo performed the song 11 times during their Dec. 17 concert in Vancouver, Canada.

This is exciting news for European fans, who will now get to watch the Throne rock the mic. This tour is going to be cray.

Jay-Z and Kanye West will have their New York fans seeing more than double. The hip-hop super-duo added dates to their “Watch The Throne” tour, including two nights in New York at Madison Square Garden. The two were already scheduled to perform two nights at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Weezy’s hometown also recieved an added night on November 30.

The tour, which was announced in August, will kick off on October 28 in Atlanta (originally slated to start September 22 in Detroit).

The highly anticipated Watch The Throne  album was released on August 8 and during it’s first-week broke an iTunes store record, being the highest selling album in the online store’s history (This  record was broken my Lil Wayne three weeks later when he released  Tha Carter IV ). It also reached the top of the charts in 23 countries.

Building on top of the buzz of the album, the two dropped into the MTV VMAs this year, performing a suprise performance of their single “Otis,” which peaked at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Billboard chart. Their following single “Niggas in Paris” produced by rising producer Hit-Boy, currently sits at No. 4 on the chart.    –Natelege Whaley
