Take a Yuengling Brewery Tour at the Oldest Brewery in the Country

As the craft beer industry has been booming over the past couple decades, brewery tours have become a major piece of tourism. Learning about the beer making process and getting to sample the freshest brews certainly has its draw. But some breweries offer something unique. Some breweries have history. Long, monumental, incredible history. And there’s no where you will find more interesting history than on a Yuengling brewery tour. After all, this Pottsville brewery is the oldest one in the entire country. Oh, and did I mention that the tours are free ?

The History of Yuengling

You might be surprised to learn that Yuengling didn’t start as “Yuengling”. In 1829 David G. Yuengling established Eagle Brewery . But just two years after it opened, a fire destroyed the property. Little time passed before the brewery was rebuilt, moving the operations from Centre Street to Mahantongo Street.

Decades later, as the family members joined in the business, they changed the name to D. G. Yuengling & Son , which remains the brewery’s official name today.

Yuengling during the Prohibition

In 1919, the 18th Amendment nearly shut down operations at Yuengling with the Prohibition. But like other historic breweries and wineries at the time, they pivoted their business. While Pleasant Valley Wine Company shifted to sacramental wine , Yuengling’s plan paralleled Saranac’s strategy by producing “near beer”. The brewery was also able to produce their signature porter, which was deemed a medicinal treatment for anemic people. They also added a dairy across the street, where they produced ice cream. Today, the brewery tours end in the former creamery, where visitors can sample a variety of Yuengling’s current brews.

The second century of Yuengling

In the past hundred years, more changes have happened at the iconic brewery. Now in it’s 6th generation of Yuenglings, the business has adapted to changing times and production demands. At the turn of the 21st century, the brewery faced a healthy problem: producing less beer than the public wanted. As a result, they announced plans to build a new brewing facility just three miles away in Mill Creek. Right around the same time, Dick Yuengling got the opportunity to purchase the former Stroh’s brewery in Philadelphia. By 2001, the company was actively brewing in all three locations.

Yuengling moves to Tampa

Most recently, Yuengling has opened a Tampa campus as a destination experience. The campus includes a draft haus and kitchen with rotating menus.

Yuengling’s Most Famous Beers

In nearly 200 years of brewing, Yuengling has created their fair share of beers. It all started with the Lord Chesterfield Ale and Dark Brewed Porter , which are still made today.

When the Prohibition ended in 1933, Yuengling produced a special Winner Beer and even shipped a truckload to President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

Since its inception, Yuengling’s most popular and widest produced beer is their Traditional Amber Lager . When you go to any bar an order “a Yuengling”, that’s the beer you’ll get.

One of my favorite Yuengling beers is a seasonal release. Made in partnership with another Pennsylvania icon, it’s the Hershey Chocolate Porter .

How to Take a Yuengling Brewery Tour

I can’t tell you how many times I drove down I-81, passing the signs for Pottsville and the Yuengling Brewery Tour without ever going. I wanted to. My friends had gone. They raved about it. And as someone who prides herself on visiting hundreds of breweries and doing tours around the world, I’m a little ashamed it took me so long to get to Yuengling. But last December that’s exactly what I did.

We got off the highway in Pottsville and found a municipal parking lot down the block from the brewery. We made it just in time for the hourly tour, and we had prepared ourselves so we would be good to go right when we arrived. Unlike other brewery tours, Yuengling allows visitors of all ages to come along on their historic tours. The most important things to note are that you need to wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to walk up/down about 150 steps. Due to the historic nature of the building, it is not wheelchair accessible.

Going Underground

The start of the Yuengling brewery tour is also what makes it so unique. That’s because it is underground. But let’s go back a bit first. Why was a brewery established in Pottsville, Pennsylvania to begin with? Well, Pennsylvania is well known for its mining industry, which resulted in large settlements of mining communities across the state. Pottsville was one of those places. And David G. Yuengling knew he had a captive audience that longed for a refreshing beer after a hard day’s work in the mines.

When the brewery was created, the men who worked in the rack room were able to indulge. Any kegs that were not fully sealed became a perk for the workers. But beyond the rack room is the massive beer cave. Yuengling had the idea to create a large cave in the rock underneath the brewery as a natural way to store beer and keep it cool. The most impressive part of walking through the caves? Learning that they were hand carved .

During the Prohibition, the caves were sealed off. But don’t worry, they were reopened years later.

The Brewing Facility

After exploring the depths of the brewery, you will head to the top floor and work your way down, touring the various aspects of the facility along the way. From historic signs and antique equipment to modern technology and canning lines, there is so much to see and learn.

Sample Yuengling Beers

The brewery tour ends in the former ice cream shop, where a beautiful wooden bar spans the length of the room. For tour guests over 21, they can show their ID to receive 2 free samples of whichever beers are currently on tap. Even better, they can purchase additional beers for just $3 a pint. Extra fresh and extra cheap? Sounds like a win-win to me.

The Gift Shop & Museum

After you’ve finished imbibing in your beers, be sure to check out the extensive gift shop. In addition to cases of Yuengling beer, there is every different type of merch you could imagine. But beyond the gift shop, don’t miss the brewery’s museum. Anyone is welcome to explore the artifacts and history with the museum, whether or not they took a tour.

Visiting the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville: America’s Oldest Brewery

The bottling line at Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA.

This is a guest post brought to you by Lance from TravelAddicts.net .

Among beer aficionados, Yuengling Brewery occupies a special place: it is America’s Oldest Brewery. They have been brewing continuously since 1829 – even through the American Prohibition (they produced medicinal porters).

Yuengling also serves a growing regional area – only 21 states. That kind of selective distribution brings with it an air of exclusivity and a tremendous desire to see what the fuss is about. And Yuengling is most definitely worth the fuss.

Coming up Mahantongo Street from downtown Pottsville, you happen on the two idyllic brick buildings housing Yuengling Brewery.

If you have toured large breweries, you begin to wonder, is this it? It’s cute, but it’s also really small. There’s no visitor center. There’s no security office. There isn’t even a parking lot (it’s all street parking; $0.25 per hour). What there is: the most authentic brewery we’ve ever seen.

As you walk into the brewery, you enter through one of the production rooms and follow the signs to the gift shop. The free tours leave from here either twice a day (weekdays) or three times per day (weekends). Specific tour times are noted on the brewery website and include a special summer schedule.

The tour length is approximately 75 minutes, which includes a tasting of two beverages (a non-alcoholic option is available for those who don’t want to imbibe).

Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania: America's Oldest Brewery.

The tour takes you into the brewhouse where they explain the Yuengling beer-making process. You will also see the bottling process in a second building.

That’s all interesting, but the highlight of the tour is the underground cave where Yuengling used to store their beer. It is carved several hundred feet back into the mountain. It is wet and cold and perfect for aging beer. During Prohibition, the Feds were concerned about bootlegging and walled off the cave with bricks – a small portion of the original wall still remains.

After our tour, our fantastic tour guide, Vickie, offered us samples of the brews. The brewery maintains a modest gift shop selling T-shirts and barware, but you can also purchase reproductions of their classic advertising through the years.

The walls of the gift shop also display artifacts from the company history. And if you are quiet and there at the right time of day, turn your head up to the ceiling and listen to the grain flowing the black pipes on its way to becoming beer.

We visited way back in 1989. Unless memory is not serving me well, were there at one time muraled walls somewhere? Also is Fritz still around?

Yuengling now has a 2nd brewery in Tampa, FL. (previously Bud/Bush and Schlitz). It’s quite a popular beer here as well, but I suspect a lot is shipped north.

Tour America’s oldest brewery at the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pa. The tour offers guests a walk-through of the historic, original brewery building with a few modern additions.

The tour begins by taking visitors through the older sections of the brewery, including the caves used to store beer before modern refrigeration methods. There are also Prohibition-era brick walls from when the government made Yuengling close them off. Your tour guide will share how the brewery survived the Prohibition, and how the Yuengling creamy came to be. The tour guide I had was informative and definitely not dry telling the stories.

A photo posted by Cody Darrah (@codydarrah) on Nov 13, 2016 at 12:48pm PST

Afterward, you will move on to view the brew kettles along with some murals that tell the story of the brewery’s past. There is also a stop at the Rathskeller bar before finally ending up at the bottling and canning line. After telling us about the bottling and canning process, our tour guide offered to take slow motion videos of the production line on visitor’s phones, especially the ones who were not particularly tech savvy. She also offered to take photos of our group, and for any of us in front of the brewery building.

The tour takes about 45 minutes depending on questions asked and the speed of the tour guide. After the tour, there is a tasting available with the option to purchase packaged beer and growlers. Your tour guide will now become your bartender. The guides were great at helping guests decide what to try depending on personal tastes.

A photo posted by Jill Spaeth (@innerspaeth) on Nov 26, 2016 at 10:43am PST

The tasting bar is connected to the gift shop and small museum, which is currently underway. As a fan of Yuengling, I found the tour entertaining and engaging without too much focus on the beer-making process. Your guide will ask about your knowledge of the beer-making process, and the history of beer and Prohibition so you are not hearing things repeated that your group has a handle on. While it is a small building compared to modern-day breweries, there is a lot of history to uncover and plenty to drink.

Yuengling Brewery Tour: America's Oldest Brewery

Step back in time—cold beer in hand—and discover the origins of America’s oldest brewery: the Yuengling brewery (Yuengling, pronounced YING-ling), is best known for its mild amber lager and also produces other beer varieties.

While you might not take your kids to a bar, the family-friendly brewery offers tours that are open to all ages. Complete your free walking tour with samples of their beverage—perfect after a sweltering day in Tampa .

Sunday is a day of rest everywhere, including Yuengling; it's the only day tours aren't offered. Beer also isn’t produced on Sundays, so Mondays through Fridays are the best days to go. There are typically three tours on each weekday—and two on Saturday—offered between mid-morning and early afternoon. Reservations aren't required, but since tour times are subject to change, give the brewery a ring before heading over for a tour. It’s also closed on major holidays.

Getting There

The brewery is about 9 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. If you're staying right in Tampa, use our Tampa travel guide to plan your trip before and after your visit to the brewery. Drive into the "Biergarten Entrance" on 30th Street and you'll find ample parking. If you prefer to kick back and let someone else handle the driving, take the Route 18 bus to 30th Street at East 109th Avenue, and you'll be let off in front of the brewery. Starting the day with a brewery tour and beer tasting could relax you just enough to be ready to take on a hectic amusement park, so it's convenient that Yuengling is located just 2 miles north of the main entrance to Busch Gardens.

What to Expect

Listen to a guide tell the tale of Yuengling's history, which began when a German immigrant named David Yuengling opened his original brewery located in Pennsylvania. You'll be led through the plant on a 75-minute tour of the beer-making process and may get the chance the chat with a master brewer and ask questions. Next, pull up a barstool in the biergarten, which serves as a tasting room. Sip samples of Yuengling's different brews, and go back for seconds if the staff is still serving. Soda is also available for the under-21 set and nondrinkers.

Tips and Guidelines

You may need to save your favorite shoes for another day. You won't be allowed on the tour wearing anything except closed shoes; even shoes with closed toes but openings elsewhere, such as clogs, aren't allowed. If you're over 21 and planning to sample the goods, make sure to bring your ID. Since tours are first-come, first-served, aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. On a rainy day, you won't be the only one trying to duck the drizzle with an indoor tour, so you may want to arrive even earlier to beat the crowds. Bottoms up!
