Excursion Front Suspension and Frame questions
- Add to quote
I am looking at getting an Excursion. I am going to put a 12 valve Cummins in it eventually, and a beefed up 4 speed non-electronic OD tranny behind it. (4L80 or something). I will also be swapping in a Dana 60 (probably a Super 60). It will roll on 37-40" tires, and double bead lock wheels. I do not need or want to spend $20,000 on some 4x4 diesel Excursion just to remove the drivetrain and replace it, when I can pick up a 2wd gas Excursion for well under $10,000 and build it how I want it. Here are my questions: 1. Do the 2wd Excursions have the same frame as the 4x4 Excursions? Meaning, are the leaf spring bracket mounting holes there on the frame? If so, then I will just install aftermarket drop brackets and leaves, and a leaf sprung Dana 60. 2. Does the 2wd Excursion have the same front suspension as the 2wd F-250 from the same era? I believe it is a coil sprung Twin I Beam with separate shocks like the 80-96 F-150s were. 3. If the above is true; What is the spring pad width on the 2wd Excursion? Is it the same as the newer Super Duty trucks with coils and radius arms? (I can compare with specs from a newer truck if somebody has the measurements). Thanks in advance folks. I am trying to get an idea of which Excursion I need before I "go shopping".
I'm reasonably certain the front of the frame is identical to a F250/350 of the same year, which means that all of the same style 4wd stuff is a bolt in, even the holes are all pre drilled. I have also seen more than a few 99-04 trucks with the 05+ suspension swapped in, from what I have read it too is pretty close to a direct bolt in. And yes, a 2wd excursion is Twin I Beam.
i don't know if it helps but on my truck the frame was different than a 4wd. the frame horns on the 4wds had different frame horns and i had to drill the holes for the rear leaf bracket. i'm not sure about your situation but i didn't have a problem, in fact the frame horns not accepting a stock shackle prompted me to use a decent size bushing.
Pictures?
Ill second the interchangeability of the frame to later model 05&up coil sprung front end. Are you going to do wheeling or just street pounder/tow rig. I believe 02-03 model have 60s they just have unit bearings on them and that can be converted easily. I have a 2000 and 2003 model f250s and have replaced wheel bearings on both but they got 100k on the bearings? Not quit sure wy you would go to the work of changing the motor and trans. Assuming you do not buy one with a 6.0 liter. The 7.3 run hard and super reliable as well as tons of hop up parts out there. Have the 4r100 trans done up a bit John Woods style and away you go. He also could guide you on mods to the 7.3liter he is a guro on these trucks.
I want nothing to do with a Power Stroke, or any electronically controlled engine, Regardless of displacement. I want nothing to do with any electronically controlled transmission, regardless of gear patterns, strength, or popularity. I want to run as simple a mechanical drivetrain as possible. The reason to swap from whatever engine and tranny combo is equipped to a non-electronic Cummins and (preferably) non-electronic automatic transmission is because I do not want any electronics or computers in my drivetrain whatsoever. I've built and worked on several Powerstrokes, and Cummins 6BT/ISB engines, and I prefer the 6BT. The reason for the swap from 2wd to 4wd is because Excursions were equipped with Dana 50's the entire 5 years they were made. I feel that the Dana 50 is a sub-par axle, and would be compelled to put in a Dana 60 (preferably a Super 60). I don't care what people's opinions are on the Dana 50, I literally can not run one. Cost is the main issue. A 4wd diesel Excursion 2000-2005 costs from $15,000-$32,000, and comes equipped with a drivetrain that I do not want anything to do with. Whereas a 2wd gas Excursion 2000-2005 can be had for as little as $4500. I couldn't care less about mileage, so long as the body and interior are in great shape, because the only thing I need is from the frame up basically. I can't feature spending that kind of coin on something I am going to rip apart to make what I want. If I buy one of the cheap ones I've seen, I can have exactly what I want, and still be cheaper than the cheapest 4x4 PSD Excursion, with a better drivetrain, suspension, and wheel/tire package. The last few posts were a little cryptic on whether or not the coil pads on the 2005 and up trucks are the same width as the coil buckets on the Excursion. What's the verdict here?
You state in your first post about using a 4L80E, its electronic. There is no automatic overdrives that are completely devoid of electronics, even the old A518 Dodge trannies have some electronics on them and they don't come with lock-up converters stock. Plan on using a 94+ Dodge, any year Ford, or 88+ Chevy tranny to get the right drop for your t-case unless you want to go with a different t-case and possibly adapters. Don't forget all 12 valves after 91.5 came with electronics on them as they used ECM's, throttle position sensors, crank position sensors, kill solenoids and other things. Plan on having to change out the core support on the gas Excursion as you are going to have to use a diesel one unless you use a 89-91.5 non-intercooled Cummins.
got any more pictures? Build thread? I really like that. The 08 headlights are ugly unless you go with those. I would probably do the 07 headlight swap if anything.
ChrisEvans, I'm guessing you used the 99+ rear shackle mounts for a shackle reversal on your 1990? EDIT: Just saw the pictures. That's front shackle setup.
The 97 and older frames have pretty much nothing to do with the 99+ ones. Chris, why stay front shackle when you built everything yourself?
ok i knew that they changed a lot after 98, i don't know if they started using the same frames for 2 and 4wd. it seems like that would make more sense. as far as the front shackles i wanted to keep the 4wd swap relatively stock but i eventually did do a shackle reversal.
So, I got an Excursion yesterday. Was trying to find a definitive answer to the following question: All things being equal (year, drive train, etc) are an Excursion frame and a regular cab long bed F-250 or F-350 frame the same? The wheel base is. Would an Excursion body drop onto an F250 or F-350 frame?
Definitive answer: NO. If you look at your Ex frame there is an area it is riveted together with patch plates. From that point forward, the frame is shared between the EX, F250, 350, and IIRC, 450 and 550 trucks. From that patch plate back it is unique to the wheelbase and cab config. Ex frame rails are flatter to fit the body better, have a narrower section height to keep the vehicle lower, and they are just a little thinner. Not a huge deal, but not the same. You would have to lift the floor to fit the frame. Transmission mounts and cross members are different as well, as well as the fuel tank and tank mounts (F250/350 tank will not fit under the floor of an Excursion) and rear shock mounts. Leaf spring mounts are physically shaped different, but mount the same and are relatively the same height.
Congrats...you finally got one...post a pic and ya, the frames are way different
Thanks guys, on both the info and congrats. I will get pics up soon. I plan on going all "Duty Calls" on this one once I start working again.
So.....anything ever happen with this? Been almost a year....

MasterPro Wheel Bearing And Hub Assembly
Precision wheel hub assembly, dorman oe solutions axle bearing and hub assembly, shop replacement wheel hub assemblies.
The hub assembly on your vehicle is designed to carry the weight of the vehicle and allow each wheel to spin. Hub assemblies include the hub and lug studs that attach the wheel to the car, as well as the bearing that allows it to spin freely with minimal friction or resistance. In some cases, the hub assembly on your vehicle may also include speed sensors that send information to the engine computer, anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, and more. These sensors are often critical to the safe operation of your vehicle, and if they are damaged, the ABS warning light may illuminate and the entire hub assembly may need to be replaced. Over time, the hub bearing may wear out, the lug studs may suffer damage, or other problems may arise that require hub assembly replacement. Damaged hub bearings can cause a roaring or clicking sound at the wheel end or steering wheel vibrations, which may also lead to wobbling or looseness at the wheel that could accelerate tire or suspension component wear and make driving safely more challenging. A wheel hub assembly holds your wheels in place and keeps them turning, so a wheel bearing failure can quickly become a dangerous problem and should be addressed promptly. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries hub assemblies or wheel bearings for most vehicles to help make your repair and keep you on the road safely.

Does the Excursion have a Dana 60 front axle AND 10.25 0R 10.50 rear axle? I'm looking for a used one and I wasn't sure. Thanks
The X's have a Dana 50 up front, connected to the frame with low arched, wimpy springs. I'm not *sure* about the rear axle though. Mark
Since 1999 all Superduties and "X's" have the 10.5" rear... since late 2001, early 2002 they all have Dana 60 fronts.
My 08/01 built 02 Excursion has Dana 50 front.
Dual Rear Wheel F350 Super Duty Pickups have the Dana 60 front axle (if 4x4) and the Dana 80 rear axle. Our Excursions have the Ford Sterling rear axle 10.5 inch ring gear, with 3 (instead of 2) pinion or spider gears between the side gears, for the torque of the PSD.

Excursion Front Axle Info. I was reading the current issue of 4 Wheel & Off Road and came accross an article on building up a '99 Superduty for an extreme Mexican excursion. They indicated the front axle was a Dana 50 (Same as Excursion) and that the Dana 50 axle consisted of a Dana 44 differential in a Dana 60 housing with 30 spline axles.
