Original and Modern Air France Posters

Air France posters are particularly sought after throughout the world. From 1934 to 1963, Air France was an innovator in hiring greatly talented illustrators to promote airline routes, noticeably Lucien Boucher who designed over a dozen world maps. The airline company also called on many of the most reputed and popular French illustrators of their time to convey all the magic of its dream-like destinations, from Valerio to Paul Colin, Bernard Villemot, Edmond Maurus, Vincent Guerra, Nathan, Guy Georget and many others. Well before the advent of mass tourism, Air France posters were brilliantly designed invitations to explore the world, capturing a certain air of refinement that would inspire the middle class to travel the globe. This is one of the most iconic of the Air France posters. A constellation propeller plane swoops over the setting sun as it prepares for landing in the immediately recognizable Rio de Janeiro landscape. The plane is a DC-4, the main production airliner in the postwar time period. The artist of this poster is Victor Vasarely (1908-1997), the famous painter known mostly for his abstract works. When Vasarely first moved to Paris from Hungary in the 1930s and '40s, he worked as an illustrator to pay the bills. This is the only example of a work by Vasarely for Air France, and is distinctive in its difference in style than what many know him for today. Air France was formed in 1933 through a merger of several smaller international companies. These smaller airlines had already built extensive networks across the world, and when combined under the Air France umbrella they created an exciting accessibility to fliers. Air France remains one of the most highly regarded international airlines, servicing 78 countries around the world. It served as France's primary national flag carrier for seven decades prior to its 2003 merger with KLM. Posters have always been essential to Air France’s communications. It has one of the greatest collections in the world with over 1500 posters created by the most famous illustrators. Air France posters are usually striking, with few words, and depict destinations as dream-like and air travel as making dreams come true. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. Air France is an airline which appreciated both sides to the medium and created highly artistic and highly effective travel posters. The Travel Posters of Air France

Vintage posters have the ability to reflect and capture the culture of the time in which they were created. Vintage travel posters provide a glimpse into the glamorous and exciting world of commercial air travel during its boom in the 1950s and 60s.

Airlines used travel posters to not only highlight various travel destinations but also to graphically represent themselves to the public. The emerging air travel industry became a highly competitive one during its golden years and so travel posters became an essential and valuable component in an airline’s success.

Many of the travel posters created during this Jet Age period are considered true works of art and some of the greatest examples of successful design. Air France produced many such posters and used design to maintain an excellent brand image and attract customers to its services. This is what ensured the airlines continuous success over the decades.

The History of Air France

Air France, or originally Compagnie Nationale Air France, was officially formed on 7 October in 1933. The airlines headquarters were established in Paris and have remained so ever since. The airline came to be after the merger of five smaller French airlines: Air Union, Air Orient, Société Générale de Transport Aérien (SGTA), CIDNA, and Aéropostale.

On 25 June 1946, Air France completed its first transatlantic flight from Paris to New York City and by 1948 the airline had flourished into one of the biggest in the world with a fleet of over 130 aircrafts. During the cold war (1950 – 1990), Air France was one of the three main allied airlines to operate in Germany.

By the early 21st century the airline was servicing over 200 cities in 80 different countries. Comfort and safety were the two highest priorities to Air France from the very beginning of the airline and this ensured the continued support from the public. The airline hired its first air hostesses in 1946 and provided luggage racks, fans, and heating for each of its customers.

Air France’s Design History

When Air France was first established in the 1930s, it immediately aligned itself with modernity. Its business strategy and branding were centered around the golden rules of modernity – and more specifically a forward-looking and human-focused modernity.

This outlook was applied to all aspects of the airline. To achieve this modernity in its visual identity, the airline hired the most bold and experimental French designers of the time.

Air France was a truly cultural brand that embodied French ideals and aesthetics. The airline harnessed the strong French link to art and elegance in all its marketing. This proved to be a highly successful combination and one which designers were eager to be associated with.

Air France designers were always given carte blanche to express themselves as long as four key elements were included in the design: an aircraft, the nine letters that make up ‘Air France’, the sky, and the Air France logo which was a winged seahorse with a dragon’s tail (the logo was inherited from Air Orient).

Air France Travel Posters

The French have been using the power of posters since the early days of the French Revolution. They were also among the first to use posters for commercial advertising. Air France recognised and prioritised the value of posters and as such it is accredited with one of the greatest collection of travel posters in the world.

The airline has over 1500 posters to its name, many of which were created by the most esteemed designers and illustrators throughout the decades. The collection varies from detailed and illustrative to bold and abstract but the Air France posters all consistently have few words, easily identifiable imagery, and simple Air France branding.

Bernard Villemot Air France Posters

A major contributor to the greatness of Air France’s travel poster collection is Bernard Villemot (1911–1989). Villemot is considered one of the most prestigious poster artists of the Art Deco time period and he produced several posters for Air France throughout his career.

Villemot was born in Trouville-sur-Me in France and trained as a graphic artist under Paul Colin in Paris. He became known for his sharp vision (that was influenced by photography) and went on to have an incredibly successful career as a graphic artist. His simplicity, elegant forms, and sophisticated colours created a style that greatly leant itself to both French publication and street advertising.

Villemont’s attention to detail and eye for composition can be seen in every artwork he created and is particularly evident in his Air France travel poster advertising the airline’s flights to North Africa / Air France Afrique du Nord. The poster depicts a view over a North African town in vibrant colours and combined with simple, bold typography. This poster highlights Villemot’s exceptional ability to condense an advertising message into one, simple and memorable image.

Another way that Air France made their branding and travel posters stand out was by hiring contemporary fine artists. In the 1960s, Air France realised the untapped potential and talent of the contemporary art world.

The airline, already strongly linked to French creativity and modernism, launched several campaigns focused on a single artist. The artists the airline worked with were Georget (1963), Mathieu (1968), Pagès (1971) and Bezombes (1981).

Guy Georget (1911 -1992) first entered the commercial art scene in the late 1940s. Georget worked with very classical imagery but his work remained fun and light-hearted by his use of bright colours and bold lines.

Georget was always on the cutting edge of art and perception. As such, his style evolved greatly over his career which spanned from the 1950s to the 1960s. He adapted with the times and so he kept his work modern and attractive to the public. His series of Air France posters is attention grabbing and very of-the-time and garnered huge success for the airline and for Georget himself as an artist.

Lucien Boucher Air France Posters

Another graphic artist who achieved great success for Air France for many years was Lucien Boucher (1889 – 1971). Boucher produced a great number of posters for Air France between 1934 – 1962 and became known as Mr Planisphere (planispheres are flattened representation of planet earth). His designs would always feature a charming illustrated world map of the various travel destinations Air France serviced.

Boucher was born in Charte, France and studied at École de Céramique de Sèvre. He began his career as a caricaturist but soon evolved into a commercial graphic artist. Boucher was highly influenced by surrealism and developed a highly detailed, absorbing graphic style which was applied to his Air France posters which are considered amongst the best of the genre.

From its two hubs in Paris (Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle), Air France continues to fly to 195 destinations and 91 countries. Much of the airlines longstanding success can be attributed to its early years of innovative and artistic branding.

The airline’s obvious French character and the notion of the expected pleasure of travelling with Air France are embodied in an enthusiastic and joyful message that is one with the French joie de vivre and way of life.

Irrespective of time periods or technological advancements, posters maintain an ability to entrance viewers and travel posters continue to bring glory to air travel’s role in globalisation and the advancement of society. Air France’s collection of travel posters greatly achieves just this and as such the airline and it’s posters are highly revered by many.

• How Posters Were Made

A large selection of French travel posters with many from the PLM or Paris Lyon Mediterrannee Railways. The Chemin des Fers or Railway lines of France were independent companies prior to the turn of the century in 1900. In Paris there was a different train station for each train line ie: Gare de Lyon serviced the east and south of France. Slowly the PLM brought together all the different Chemins de Fer and it was during this period up until 1937 that many of the most famous French travel posters were created. However it did not stop there and in 1937 the SNCF took over the PLM and standardized the posters to 24x39 inches to fit in to a standard frame at trains stations and travel agencies. We have a large selection and are getting new ones in all the time

This one captures many of the iconic landmarks including the Obelisk of Luxor, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, and the statue of Renommée . A violin, glass of champagne and a mask complete the scene.

This is an archival process where the poster has been professionally cleaned, de-acidified, mounted on archival paper and affixed to a high quality artist canvas using a gentle wheat paste. The materials used are reversible, and the process is recognized throughout the industry as a safe and effective way to stabilize and preserve valuable posters. 

Occasionally, restoration work is also completed to reduce wrinkles, repair tears and missing sections, or to remove stains.

We us a widely recognized 6 scale system to grade our posters. 

• MINT - A poster in mint condition looks like it just came off of the press. It will have no blemishes or defects of any kind. It can be folded or rolled, depending on the original packing method (most movie posters were sent folded). 
• NEAR MINT - A poster in near mint condition may have minor imperfections in the border only. The artwork is in excellent condition with no blemishes whatsoever. 
• VERY GOOD  - A poster in very good condition may have blemishes in the border and up to approximately one inch of the poster's artwork. There may be small tears in the artwork along the fold lines only. It may also have minor fading. In general, a poster in very good condition may show some wear and often will project a subtle classic vintage vibe without detracting from the artwork. 
• GOOD  - A poster in good condition may have tears or small holes that measure no larger than a quarter on the outer edges of the poster's artwork. Pieces of the border may be torn or missing or have holes; there may be mild bleed-through in the outer area of the artwork; there may be mild fading. In general, a poster in good condition will have minor blemishes around the border and into the outer edges of the artwork. The major area of the artwork will be clear of any blemishes. Some people actually prefer this type of poster, which definitely shows some age and character. 
• FAIR  - A poster in fair condition may have major blemishes that directly affect the artwork of the poster. The poster is recognizable and the artwork is primarily intact. A poster in fair condition can benefit from professional restoration. 
• POOR  - Posters in poor condition will have serious blemishes or tears or in such poor shape that even the slightest handling might add to the damage. In many cases, a poster in this condition should be professionally restored.

Collecting and displaying vintage posters became popular almost as the first image was rolling off the press in the late 1800's. The earliest posters were printed using a method called stone lithography, which produced vibrant colors and bold images. Posters soon appeared everywhere in Paris and beyond; it seemed that everyone was interested in the "new media" of the day. Unfortunately, almost all of these posters were destroyed during use on city walls and other outdoor displays, pasted over when the next advertisement was ready. Posters were not meant to survive the long term, making them so valuable and desired today. 

Why Vintage Posters?

Many people use a vintage poster as a focal point in a room, or to compliment (or contrast) with a particular design style. Still others display an image that has personal meaning to them; a sport they love, a place they've been or an event that has special significance. An office, restaurant, or hotel will often use vintage posters to promote their industries, or create an unforgettable and unique atmosphere. The reasons are as varied as the people who buy them, but for each one a vintage poster provides a unique piece of history that is preserved and displayed. 

Original? Reprint? Reproduction? What's the difference?

An original vintage poster is one that was printed and used (or intended to be used) during the time period of it's original purpose. Quite often, successful advertising posters were reprinted for continued use in new campaigns, often over a period of many years and commissioned by the advertiser or the artist, sometimes using the original plates and printing methods, or with minor modifications such as logo alteration. While values will vary, both original posters and vintage reprints have collectible value.

Reproductions, on the other hand, are simply a photographic digital copy of an original poster, and have no collectible value. Authentic Vintage Posters does not sell reproductions. 

All items are carefully hand-packed and shipped in a sturdy tube within 3 business days of payment unless otherwise indicated. Some items which were previously folded or not suitable for rolling will be sent in a flat pack. Please note that an adult signature may be required upon delivery, so we are unable to ship to PO boxes. How We Package Your Poster

Our Guarantee

All of our posters are guaranteed to be authentic and as described in the product description to the best of our knowledge and belief, and in good faith. Quite simply, if you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, simply contact us within 14 days of receipt and we'll gladly accept your return, providing the item is in the same condition as it was sent.

Our policy lasts 14 days. If 14 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately, we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it. It must also be sent in the original packaging.

There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable). Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error. Any item that is returned more than 14 days after delivery may also be ineligible.

Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. Your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within two business days. Original shipping costs are not refundable.

Poster was in great condition. I wish it came with a certificate of authenticity that I could keep with the poster. When our kids eventually go through our things I'm afraid they may Google a similar poster on Amazon for $24.99 and give it away.
