Fossil dunes landscape of formations of windswept sand in Abu Dhabi United Arab Emirates

With vast deserts, impressive architecture and sweeping coastlines, the UAE is home to plenty of eye-catching attractions. And while many visitors are wowed by the world’s tallest building or the manmade Palm Jumeirah, there are plenty of other inspiring sights to be discovered across the Emirates. Here are some of the most beautiful places in the UAE.

The rolling dunes of Liwa Oasis

The rolling dunes of Liwa Oasis

1. Liwa Oasis, Rub’ Al Khali Desert, Abu Dhabi

Located on the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khail (the Empty Quarter) the world’s largest uninterrupted desert, Liwa Oasis extends 100 kilometres in an east-west arc and is home to sand dunes at up to 150-metres in height, as well as Tal Moreeb one of the world’s tallest dunes at 300-metres high – some of the sand that forms the dunes has been dated back to 141,000 years old. The ancestral home of the Bani Yas tribe, the oasis is characterised by tall orange-red sand dunes and lush date palm groves, which are fed by the water table that sits close to the surface. Also present, are a number of forts built more than a century ago among which is the historic reconstructed Al Meel Fort built by the Al Bu Falah tribe during the reign of Sheikh Mohammed bin Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi from 1816–18. If looking for somewhere to stay to fully immerse yourself into the desert, Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab is a 90-minute drive, or 50-minute helicopter ride from Abu Dhabi.

2. Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s cultural enclave, home to the Louvre and upcoming Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim museum set to open in 2025, Saadiyat Island is also one of the most picturesque locations on the coastline of the UAE. Lined with luxury hotels from the St. Regis to the Park Hyatt, the talc-white sand beaches are peppered with mangroves and lapping turquoise water, where dolphins are often spotted playing in the waves, are some of the loveliest in the region.

3. Sir Bani Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

One of the eight desert islands of Al Dhafra, Sir Bani Yas Island is the largest natural island of the UAE and is located just off the shore of the western region of Abu Dhabi. Established as a wildlife reserve by Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1977, it is now home to more than 17,000 free-roaming animals including giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs, gazelles and Arabian Oryx that can be viewed on 4x4 game drives across the island. Accessible only by boat, a complimentary water taxi runs daily, but must be booked 24 hours in advance. Accommodation is available at one of three hotels by Anantara: the family-style Desert Islands Resort & Spa, Al Yamm Villa Resort on the beach and Al Sahel Villa Resort that showcase the best of what the island has to offer. Beautiful beaches , mangroves and wildlife awaits.

5. Jubail Mangrove Park, Abu Dhabi

Mangrove ecosystems are a key part of the UAE’s natural landscapes , home to dozens of species of wildlife, many of which are endangered. While mangroves dot the coastlines of many parts of the UAE, the Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi is one of the best places to enjoy them, with boardwalks allowing visitors to walk among the mangrove forests, spot wildlife and get a deeper understanding of the biodiversity hidden above and below the surface. Expect to spot sea turtles, flamingos, grey herons and gazelles as you take the two-kilometre walk around the site, which includes several picture stops from which to take in this 5,000-hectare sanctuary.

6. Al Wathba Fossil Dunes, Abu Dhabi

Around 45 kilometres to the east of the capital is Al Wathba, a desert area home to flamingo-filled wetlands and turquoise salt lakes. But its the Al Wathba Fossil Dunes that are worth making the journey for. Within this seven-kilometre protected area, more than 1,700 fossil dunes rise from the golden sands, each unique formation the result of exposure to the desert’s harsh elements over hundreds of thousands of years. Geologists estimate some of the fossils are as old as four million years, and in 2022, they were officially opened as a tourist attraction, with more than three kilometres of lit paths and shaded seating installed.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

7. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Construction on the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the largest in the UAE, began in 1996 and took 12 years to complete. The monument was built to honour the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed, and serves as his final resting place. The structure is built from gleaming white marble and features 82 domes and minarets, and finials decorated with gold glass mosaic. Inside, marble walls are decorated with colourful climbing poppies, jasmine and red frangipani, with semi-precious stones and mother-of-pearl embedded into columns. The mosque is big enough to accommodate 40,000 visitors inside and outside, with the main prayer hall capable of holding 7,000 worshipers.

8. Al Ain Oasis, Abu Dhabi

Areas of lush greenery are few and far between in the UAE, but the shaded pathways of Al Ain Oasis are among the best places to seek out some nature. Spread across 1,200 hectares in the “Green City” of Al Ain, about 90 minutes from the capital, the oasis is home to close to 150,000 date palm trees and 100 different varieties of vegetation. At this UNESCO Cultural Site, visitors can also discover the city’s ancient irrigation system, known as falaj.

9. Iranian Mosque, Dubai

In the colourful, bustling streets of Bur Dubai , one of the city’s oldest areas, is the Iranian Mosque Hosanna, a Shia mosque built in 1979. The architecture is Persian inspired, as are the colourful ceramic faience tiles that cover the structure. Shades of azure blue are dotted with green, yellow, red and white, with Islamic calligraphy from the Quran inscribed within rosettes. It might not be the UAE’s grandest mosque, but it’s certainly its most colourful.

10. Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, Dubai

Just beyond Dubai’s towering skyline sits a somewhat unexpected wildlife sanctuary, where tens of thousands of birds migrate each year. These wetlands, framed by the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa just beyond, are a breeding ground for crustaceans, mammals and fish, and home to a large flamboyance of flamingos for much of the year. The reserve was established in 1985, and officially declared as a protected area in March 1998. While the sanctuary itself is fenced off to protect the wildlife, visitors can access bird hides on the site’s perimeter.

11. Hatta Dam

The turquoise waters of Hatta Dam have long been a draw for UAE residents looking to escape the bustle of the city. Around 90 minutes from Dubai, the dam was built in the early 1990s to provide electricity and water to the village of Hatta, which today is an inland exclave of Dubai. In the years since, this mountain-encased body of water has become a popular tourist spot, with kayaks and boats available to rent on site.

Rising from the terracotta sands of Sharjah’s Mleiha desert, Fossil Rock is a popular hiking spot that hides the ancient secrets of the emirate. The formation’s crevices are dotted with marine fossils, which visitors can learn more about at the nearby Mleiha Archaeological Centre. This area is home to some of the country’s most scenic mountain trails, and at night, it’s a popular place for stargazing.

Mangrove forests are also in abundance off the coast of Umm Al Quwain, and in 2020, a dedicated Mangrove Beach was opened in the emirate, with a view to promoting eco-tourism. At this spot at Khor Al Yeefrah, around 55 minutes from Dubai, seawater flows freely through the dense clusters of mangroves, framed by the sands of the pubic beach, where shaded parasols offer spots for picnics and wooden swings provide moments for quiet reflection (and an Instagram snap). This is also a popular area for overnight camping, with a dedicated barbecue area and plenty of open space.

Off the coast of Fujairah, you’ll spot Jazīrat al Ghubbah, better known as Snoopy Island, thanks to its unique shape, which resembles the famous image of the cartoon dog lying on his back. Some see it, others don’t, but either way, this unique rock formation in swimming distance of the coast of this mountainous emirate is a popular destination for weekenders. It's also one of the best places to snorkel and dive in the UAE, with turtles, sharks and large schools of fish found in these waters.

Part of the Hajar mountain range that extends across Ras Al Khaimah to the Musandam Peninsula on the northeastern side of Oman, the views from Jebel Jais are absolutely breathtaking and offer something completely unique in the UAE. The appeal doesn’t stop there, with the surrounding area offering an array of activities and adventures, hikes, camp sites, restaurants and viewpoints to explore - it is also home to the UAE’s longest zipline, the Jais Sledder and Bear Grylls Adventure Camp. For a restaurant with a view, 1484 by Puro (situated 1484 metres above sea level) is the perfect pit stop at which to take in the mountain vistas over a leisurely lunch.

Hidden gems of the UAE: 10 secluded spots nature lovers and explorers need to know about

From wadi watering holes to old dinosaur stomping grounds, outdoor experts reveal their top spots.

It’s home to the world’s tallest building and the highest observation wheel, but step outside of the cities and the UAE really shows what it’s made of, and – spoiler alert – it’s more than just sand.

In this series of guides , we speak to the experts – the tour guides , the photographers and the artists – to uncover the Emirates’ hidden gems.

For our third instalment, we’re leaving the city behind with the outdoor explorers who spend their days in the UAE’s most breathtaking natural spaces.

The secrets of Sharjah

For ecotourism and environment specialist Ajmal Hasan, nowhere in the world compares to Mleiha , a historical site in Sharjah's central region that has been previously nominated for Unesco World Heritage status, with another nomination scheduled in the next two years.

With its rolling red sand dunes, archaeological marvels and spectacular hikes, the area is a treasure trove of natural wonders and a gateway to the country’s Bedouin past.

“This is where the deserts meet the mountains with huge peaks nestled between the red dunes,” says Hasan, who is education manager at the Mleiha Archeological Centre.

“The nature out there is just pristine in terms of landscape, history, wildlife and even the night sky. It’s incredible.”

As well as offering spectacular dunes for quad biking and camping, Mleiha is also home to the Umm an-Nar tomb, a circular Bronze Age grave, as well as the Fossil Rock, featured in our last hidden gems guide .

“These rocks date back 68 million years when the dinosaurs were dying out,” says Hasan. “This area was shallow seabed and now it's mountains, it’s crazy but time changes everything.”

In the modern day, the surrounding area is inhabited by camels, donkeys, gerbils, insects and rare flora and fauna, and the spectacle doesn't end when the sun sets.

“The night sky is incredible here because there’s less pollution and you can see the stars with the naked eye,” he says. “With a powerful telescope, you can even see the rings of Saturn. It’s amazing.”

An hour’s drive from Mleiha lies another of Sharjah's lesser-known natural spots.

Al Rafisah Dam is a large, clear lake overlooked by the Hajar Mountains and surrounded by tranquil green foliage.

“Not many people visit Al Rafisah and it feels completely peaceful and secluded,” says Hasan, who is also head of operations and tourism at Shurooq.

“There’s also a hiking path just behind the mountains where you can go trekking or you can just take a pedal boat and spend an hour just relaxing.

“There’s plenty of fish, toads and migratory birds. It’s a great spot and just opposite is Najd Al Miqsar heritage village where you can hike up to the fort and appreciate the views.”

Wandering around Ras Al Khaimah

Over in Ras Al Khaimah, Hasan recommends nature lovers head to Wadi Buraq , which straddles the border between the UAE and Oman.

“It isn’t signposted so not many people know it’s there.” he explains. “It’s a huge water collection area that forms a pool at the base of the mountains that turns into a proper lake covering hundreds of square metres.

“It’s completely beautiful but there’s no proper road leading to it, so you have to be in an off-road car to visit.”

An hour inland from Wadi Buraq lies conservationist Eddie Robinson’s favourite nature spot, Wadi Shawka , also in Ras Al Khaimah.

“If you want to flip the script on what you know about the UAE and Dubai then you have to go to Wadi Shawka,” he says.

“If you fell asleep on the drive through those mountains and then woke up in Wadi Shawka, you would think you were in a completely different country in a completely different part of the world.”

As the UAE approaches its rainy season, the wadi pools begin to fill, meaning visitors will soon be able to go swimming and spot thirsty wildlife.

“There are wild donkeys, goats, blue iguanas, frogs and fish,” he says. “You are almost guaranteed to see some form of wildlife, birdlife and lizard life.”

Only 25 kilometres from Wadi Shawka sits one of explorer and author Alexander McNabb's top hidden spots in the Hajar Mountains.

" Wadi Ejili is incredible, but it's important to pack safety equipment and check the weather forecast before you set off," he warns.

“Generally, most people will exit on the right to the Dubai-Hatta Road but the trick to it is to plough on ahead and take the track down into the wadi until you come to a quite extensive abandoned village called Sifuni.

“Eventually you’ll get to Wadi Helo , where you’ll find an amazing collection of Iron Age rock carvings up in the mountains. It’s just stunning."

Discovering Dubai’s desert

For aspiring explorers who are a little more nervous about venturing out alone, Robinson recommends spending the night in Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve with Platinum Heritage, for whom he is a senior conservation guide.

“The reserve is around 224 square kilometres in size, but we head to a hidden spot where we’re guaranteed to find animals,” he says.

“In the daytime, we’re looking for oryx and gazelle and at night we get up close to scorpions, snakes, Arabian hares, desert foxes, red foxes, hedgehogs and owls – stuff that can be really hard to find in other places.

“For all it’s part of a tourism experience, it really is a hidden gem.”

Four-wheel drives in Fujairah

For McNabb, who has written books about the UAE's heritage, there's no better way to explore than behind the wheel, though the daring routes he favours are not for the faint-hearted.

“Jabal Yibir road leading up to the mountain is hair-raising,” he says with a laugh. “It was half washed away by the rain in places and climbs steeply up to the highest peak in the emirates. It’s stupendous.”

With an elevation of 1,527 metres above sea level, Jabal Yibir lies in the Hajar Mountains in Fujairah and the only way to reach it is by a white-knuckle four-wheel drive.

“It’s all hairpin bends for kilometres and it’s very steep,” McNabb warns. “It’s brilliant but your spleen is in your mouth half the time.”

Further towards Fujairah’s coast lies Al Hayl , an ancient fortress surrounded by wadis, petroglyphic and archaeological sites.

“The ruler of Fujairah built his summer house here back in the early 20th century and whatever time of year you go there, there’s a cool breeze that wafts up the wadi, which is just lovely,” says McNabb.

“It’s just a beautiful place to drive up to the mountains and have a picnic.

“People say the UAE lacks nature and heritage, but it’s staring you right in the face – you just need to look at it.”

Many of the fossils there are said to be over 80 million years old. To get there you need to drive down the Dubai-Hatta road through to Al Awir. Wadi Al Bih

Wadi Al Bih

Why you should visit: Affectionately known as the Grand Canyon of the UAE, Wadi Bih is a deep ravine with a distance of 1 kilometre. The top of the wadi gives you some of the best views of the UAE. The whole thing spans from the Ras Al Khaimah clock tower all the way near the UAE border checkpoint. You can start your trip by exploring the National Museum of RAK or even soak up some sun on the beaches of Dibba. You can set up camp in Wadi Bih itself. Remember to check the weather before heading out there, because you don’t want to be caught in a wadi during a flash flood. Try and set up camp at a higher elevation in the Hajar Mountains, and do pack a cushy sleep bag because the rocks can prove to be killers for your back.Visitors of Wadi Al Bih can go hiking, mountain biking and camping in the area. Wadi al Bih also has some very interesting sights nearby such as the infamous deserted villages of RAK, other smaller wadi areas and some unexpected amount of natural greenery as well as gorgeous views of a great outdoors that we don’t get to experience much while living in the city

Wadi Ghalilah

Wadi Ghalilah

Why you should visit: This beautiful wadi is a favourite spot for many rock climbers. Located two hours out of Dubai, Wadi Ghalilah is quite close to Ras al Khaima’s coastline. It is known to be smaller and less extensive than Wadi Bih, but has many steeper rocks and cliffs. The wadi also has quite a low altitude and because it is so close to water, the humidity and heat make it quite difficult to trek. Stairway to heaven is the name of one of the wadi’s more dangerous mountains. It stands at a high 1.9 kilometres and is not recommended to climb without someone who is really familiar with the mountain. Additionally, many experienced climbers have alleged that the climb is quite physically and emotionally unnerving.

Why you should visit: Fujairah’s golden beaches on the UAE East Coast are definitely a must on the tourist map. The coral reefs off the Fujairah coast are ideal dive sites for those who don’t have the time to head up to Oman’s Musandam coast. Clownfish, sharks and even dolphins come out to play on a good day. While the beaches of Fujairah turn into campgrounds by night, those looking for a bit of privacy may prefer heading into the mountains to set up camp. The area around the hot springs offer some comfortable ground, and so do the wadis. But check the weather conditions for flash flood warnings.

Al Zorah Mangroves

Al Zorrah

Al Zorah Mangroves and Lagoon

Why you should visit: The species of mangrove found in Al Zorah is called the Avicennia marina, commonly known as the grey or white mangrove, we are told. The trees grow to a height of three to 10 metres and eventually becomes a home for a large variety of rare or migratory birds — close to 58 different species inhabit this ecosystem. Due to the nature reserve’s strict diktat towards sustaining the ecosystem, tours aboard the kayak are limited from venturing into the waters that are considered a safe zone by the majestic birds. While you can have a pick between embarking on this tour during low or high tide, we would recommend the hour close to sunset that gives the landscape an almost surreal appeal. Mangrove tours are priced at Dh150 for adults and Dh130 for children under 12 years. Each trip, including safety instructions, lasts two hours.

If the kayaking experience appears a bit tame for thrill-seekers, then the wakeboarding challenge turns things up a notch — or three. For those not in the know, the sport is a lot like water skiing, with the only difference being the skis are replaced with a board. However, the Wake Park lagoon at Al Zorah sees the boys and girls at Quest for Adventure employ a cable pulley system to make things a little more user-friendly and controlled and to allow novice wakeboarders to ease into the sport. Don’t think wakeboarding is quite what you bargained for? Stand-up paddleboarding is another fun activity that allows you to get your feet wet — figuratively and literally — as you paddle across the lagoon balancing yourself on a surfboard while watching the majestic flamingoes in the distance. Wakeboarding lessons start at Dh100.

Fujairah Fort

Why you should visit: The Fujairah Fort, perched high up on a 20-metre rocky hill overlooking the historic town of Fujairah 2km away, served as a symbol of power and refuge for the local inhabitants of Fujairah in the old days. It was where rulers performed their administrative duties, resolving tribal conflicts that were rife during that period. But the fort also served another purpose for the community. Because of its stability and height, it was a fortress for the people seeking protection as they weathered storms back then. Such refuge is critical to the community as Fujairah sits along the coast of the Gulf of Oman, which makes it prone to weather disturbances. The fort was constructed using materials available in the area at that time such as rock, gravel and clay stacked together using lime-based plaster. Radiocarbon analysis estimates that the fort was constructed between 1500 and 1550, according to the Fujairah Tourism and Antiquities Authority. The fort has three circular towers while the fourth one is a square for halls.

Going green: 10 natural spots you can visit in the UAE before it gets too hot

When the concrete jungle concrete jungle-s too much….

Contrary to popular opinion, there is much green to see in the UAE. Beyond the confines and stretches of the bustling cities, no doubt, but it is there and it may even surprise you. Natural beauty in the UAE has always been a question of sorts, with the primary naturally occurring landforms being the expansive desert. But we’re here to tell you that there is actually much more, many nature spots. Go on – take a drive, take a break and get lost in some green.

Here are 10 green natural wonders to visit in the UAE.

Al zorah natural reserve.

This lesser-known ecosystem in Ajman is made up of a tidal creek and a lush mangrove forest home to a rich variety of birdlife. Natural greenery is not that much of a common sight here, but this hidden gem is every nature lover’s dream. Mangroves are an important element of the coastline in this part of the world and you can spot nearly 60 species of birds, including the Greater Flamingo and a number of egrets and herons. If the sight of serene waters isn’t quite enough for you, and some adrenaline is the fix, you can also participate in water sports like windsurfing and kayaking.

  @ajman

Siniyah Island

This island is just 19 kilometres away from Umm Al Quwain and is easily accessible by boat. If you’re looking to take a break from the cityscape, Siniyah Island is the spot to visit. It’ll be a fun, spontaneous road rip, and you’ll witness beautiful rolling greens and endless blues at the end of it. Like many other spots of natural beauty in the country, the island is home to several species of birds like flamingos, herons, terns and plovers to be seen from the mudflats.

visituaq.ae

There isn’t a spot quite as naturally beautiful as  Hatta in Dubai. With its stunning views and exciting experiences, it’s a perfect spot to visit to be one with nature. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, it is truly a retreat, and best enjoyed when the temperatures go down. Of course, up in the mountains, it will be delightfully cooler, so you don’t want to miss out on this chance. Camping under the stars, kayaking and more smashing adventures await.

@visit.hatta

Al Qudra Lake

If you’re looking for the perfect picnic spot, Al Qudra Lake might just be it. These artificial lakes in the heart of Dubai’s desert are best enjoyed in the cooler months when you can camp by the lakefront, take a ride down the Al Qudra Cycling track or enjoy some bites from the food trucks. It’s also a great place to spot native Dubai wildlife in their natural habitat including desert foxes, oryx, and a number of bird species including some on the endangered list, such as the steppe eagle and the Asian houbara.

@visit.dubai

Sir Baniyas Island

There’s more than one mode of transportation involved in this one, but it’s worth it (pinky promise). Sir Baniyas Island is probably the most wildlife-dense location in the country. Home to over 11,000 animals, it’s practically one giant wildlife reserve, and several endangered species such as the blackbuck antelope and Arabian oryx as well as giraffe, ostrich and cheetah call the home. It’s a step into a landscape, with lush greenery and wilderness. You can take a safari tour of the island and explore the diversity as it roams free. It’s a 25-minute boat ride from Jebel Dhanna, which itself is a two-hour drive from downtown Abu Dhabi.

@visitabudhabi

Snoopy Island

Ras al khor wildlife sanctuary.

This wetland reserve is closer to you than you think – right by the Dubai Creek – and is the perfect spot to visit to observe some 20.000 birds, mammals, fish and exotic plants in their element, and of course, all the greenery. There is a plethora of flora and fauna for you to explore and you can bring along your binoculars to spot migratory and residents birds displaying a dazzling assortment of colors, sizes, shapes and behaviors through three bird hides for bird watching at strategic locations.Entrance is free and there are binoculars available to borrow, too. It’s an ideal escape – not too far and with exciting things to do.

Jebel Ali Wildlife Sanctuary

Another wetland reserve, the Jebel Ali wildlife sanctuary consists of stunning mangroves, 2,000 hectares of wetland including the Ghantoot Marine Reserve, a coastal and marine area of coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds and sandy beaches. You’ll find over 300 endangered species here, including the critically endangered hawksbill turtle, the mottled eagle ray, green turtle, Arabian gazelle, foxes, lizards and a variety of water birds. To visit the reserve you can join one of their turtle releases, BBQs, mangrove plantings or clean-ups.

Al Qurm Nature Reserve

Another stunning UAE nature spot to marvel at a natural mangrove forest is the Al Qurm Nature Reserve, which you’ll find at Kalba on the southern outskirts of Kalba village, on Sharjah’s east coast. The 500-hectare park of protected mangroves is home to species such as Arabian-collared kingfishers and hawksbill and green turtles. Enjoy guided kayak tours or go paddle-boarding around the area.

Jubail Mangrove Park

The stunning Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi is an absolute must-visit for nature-seekers. A huge boardwalk will take visitors on a nature trail through the natural landscape of mangroves near Yas Island and, take it from us, it’s amazing. As well as the stunning nature walk, there’s loads of activities for the whole family to get involved in such as guided boardwalk tours, kayak trips, and e-canoe tours of the mangroves.

One glance at the gorgeous sulphur pools and extraordinarily steep canyons of the Al Henna trail (or Wadi Dahir as it is also known), is enough to demonstrate why hiking in the UAE is so incredibly popular. Whilst it is possible to hike it independently, joining a tour, such as the ones offered by ECC Adventures, helps you get maximum enjoyment out of every moment. When much of the Northern Hemisphere is bundled up in hats and winter coats, Dubai is blossoming. Moderate temperatures bring in major festivals and events, and al fresco dining lasts late into the night. Accommodation rates are high. Outdoor activities and excursions into the desert are best done at this time of year.

Shoulder season: May, September and October

Best time for quiet beach holidays

Boat on a canal through Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai

The days are hot, and the nights are balmy. Because the winter crowds have disappeared, these months are good for quiet beach holidays, with sea temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C). Pleasant temperatures also mean it's still possible to camp in the desert.

Low season: June to August

Best time for budget travelers and indoor shopping

Visitors at the Aquarium in Dubai Mall

During the hot and humid summer months, travelers on a budget can more easily book into Dubai five-star's accommodations thanks to steep discounts. Life moves indoors, and summer sales lure shoppers into the air-conditioned malls.

Month-by-month breakdown

Here's a monthly guide to what you can expect through the year in Dubai. All events are subject to change.

January is a blissful month in Dubai. When much of the rest of the world is suffering post-festive season doldrums and icy conditions, the daytime temperatures in Dubai average a pleasant 77°F (25°C). January is still Dubai's coldest month, so bring a light jacket for evenings out. Key events:  Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Marathon

February in Dubai is another warm and winning month, with sun-kissed weather and plenty going on, including many outdoor events. Pack a pashmina for al fresco evenings. Key events:  Dubai Jazz Festival, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai Food Festival

Dubai's weather in March might be heating up a fraction, but it is still near perfect in this action-packed month, with warm seas for swimming and enough of space on the sand. Key events:  Festival of Literature, Art Dubai, Sikka Art Fair, Taste of Dubai, Dubai World Cup, Middle East Film and Comic Con, Burj Al Arab Swim, Dubai International Boat Show

Dubai skyline seen from the desert

The spring weather in Dubai is still warm rather than blistering, but school breaks mean you’ll see more tourists around the Easter holiday. April is a rollicking good month for beach fans and fashionistas. Key events: Fashion Forward, Al Marmoom Heritage Festival, start of Ramadan in 2021 and 2022

In May, temperatures in Dubai can nudge 95°C (35°C) or more, and most visitors have cleared out in anticipation of the summer heat wave. Beach clubs and indoor shopping centers provide welcome relief during the day.  Key events: Al Gaffal Dhow Race

A woman walks through Al Fahidi Historic District in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Summer has arrived, and it's already blisteringly hot outside. Life shifts indoors to air-conditioned malls and museums, and swimming in the sea or a hotel pool feels like sitting in a bathtub. Key events: Dubai Summer Surprises

July is the hottest month of the year in Dubai, and it's a scorcher, with average temperatures of 105°F (40°C). Flight prices and hotel rates drop significantly. You can really cool down at the city's snowy indoor slope, Ski Dubai . Key events:  Eid Al Adha in 2021 and 2022

Dubai is still roasting hot in August. Tourist attractions are generally empty, especially toward the end of the month when schools start up again.

View of Burj Al Arab hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai's searing summer temperatures are slowly starting to drop, and it's a good time to be by the sea. Excursions into the desert are possible again, and the balmy evenings lend themselves to stargazing among the sands.

Temperatures in Dubai have started to cool nicely, although you can still expect humidity and toasty warm days in early October. The cooler nights are lovely for a stroll along the Dubai Canal and for dining outdoors. Key events:  Diwali in 2022

By November, the summer heat has subsided, and visitors from colder climes are returning to enjoy the balmy temperatures. Much of life moves outdoors. Key events: Diwali in 2021, Dubai Rugby Sevens, DP World Tour Championship, Global Village

The end of the year marks the beginning of the peak tourist season for a reason: the sea is still warm, the air is crisp and clear, and evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining. Key events:  UAE National Day, Dubai International Film Festival

The Best Things to See and Do in Dubai With Kids

Dubai is a city of superlatives: largest, tallest, glitziest, ritziest, forever the hostess with the mostess. Remarkably, the Emirate holds that latter golden distinction even when it comes to family entertainment. I learned this firsthand when my 20-month-old toddler, Julian, and I spent nearly a week in the city during a 23-day, three-country, mother-son solo trip to the Middle East and Africa in fall 2023. We pinballed between Dubai and the surrounding Arabian desert, splashing in pools and water parks, tooling through extravagant botanical gardens and immersive art exhibitions, and bouncing around a 4x4 in a baby-friendly twist on dune bashing . What follows are highlights from that action-packed itinerary, plus a few recs for families traveling with older children.

Dubai offers several high-end hotels that cater to families.

How to find a family-friendly place to stay in Dubai

After a brutal long-haul flight to the UAE, it feels good to collapse in the lap of luxury. Families wanting that extra TLC can do no better than the One&Only Royal Mirage , an elegant beach resort with family suites fit for a sultan. Julian and I were assigned a butler, Soumya, upon check-in; he quickly made himself indispensable—tracking down a travel stroller I had accidentally left at the Dubai airport in my haze of jet-lagged delirium. (Mom of the Year right here!) Not only did he find it that night, he arranged for it to be delivered to my room the following day and gave me a loaner stroller to use in the interim. The next-level pampering didn’t stop there: Our suite—some three times the size of my old Brooklyn apartment—was kitted out with new-in-the-box toys for Julian and a massive platter of fresh fruit that he hid around the room. (My apologies to housekeeping if they found a pineapple in the safe.) Julian had fun playing with the bidet (On! Off! On! Off!); I loved the Penhaligon toiletries; and we were both over the moon scarfing down Moroccan bissara (fava bean soup) and kebabs at Tagine , Royal Mirage’s in-house restaurant.

Another property I can heartily recommend for families with kids of varying ages is Atlantis, the Palm on Jumeirah Island—arguably one of the most over-the-top resort experiences on the planet. Like Vegas on steroids, it boggles the minds of adults and youngsters alike with its many glamorous pools, Dale Chihuly lobby sculptures, and 65,000-plus marine animals swishing through its Lost Chambers Aquarium . Julian and I could have watched that shark-and-ray ballet all day if there weren’t a million other fun things to do, like plunge down toddler-ready slides at Aquaventure , the world’s largest water park, or stuff our faces on fish and chips at Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen & Bar . The water park is a dream for grade schoolers and tweens, too, with its interactive marine programming focused on sharks and dolphins and the colorful Wavehouse restaurant, a burger-and-pizza joint with a multi-level arcade, bowling alley, and surf simulator.

No trip to Dubai is complete without spending a night or two in the Arabian desert, just 45 minutes beyond city limits. At the impossibly chic Bab Al Shams resort, Moorish-inspired desert architecture with myriad fountains meets a blazing orange sun—forming what almost looks like a Hollywood film set. There are camel and falcon meet-and-greets, which both delighted and terrified my son; “baby-friendly” dune-bashing rides (same idea as regular dune bashing but far gentler); and opportunities to spot Arabian oryx and desert gazelles near a glassy artificial lake. If Julian were older, I would have loved to grab bicycles and take on the 31-mile track that snakes through the desert (at sunrise or sunset only, of course, as highs here regularly climb into the triple digits).

Kids will meet birds galore at the Green Planet Dubai. In the summer months, the indoor rainforest even lets families camp out overnight.

What to do in Dubai with kids

In addition to the Lost Chambers Aquarium, Julian and I spent an hour gawking at the gentoo penguins, sand tiger sharks, and giant grouper at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo . Its 10-million-liter tank is one of the largest suspended aquariums on Earth, housing some 140 species of aquatic animals. A walk-through tunnel runs 157 feet through the tank, making for an incredible photo op. Older kids can sign up for close-up animal encounters with otters, eagle rays, and a 1,654-pound Australian saltwater crocodile.

The wildlife parade continues at the Green Planet Dubai , an indoor vertical rainforest with upward of 3,000 plants and animals. During a special 30-minute encounter, we fed grapes and sweet potatoes to a 12-year-old sloth named Lemon. Her gentle demeanor and natural smile sent my toddler into a tailspin of frenzied giggling and clapping. He also loved barreling down the rainforest’s spiral ramp (picture the Guggenheim with plants), pausing every 20 feet or so to marvel at a jewel-toned parrot, toucan, or stony-faced owl.

Moving out of the jungle and back to the concrete skyline, Julian had zero interest in standing at the foot of the Burj Khalifa , the world’s tallest building. But he did get a kick out of floating around the 30-acre lake at its base in a shaded gondola. Our boat ride was timed to the Fountain Show at Dubai Mall, with the waterworks accompanied by Superbowl halftime–caliber sound and lights.

On the outskirts of the city, we strolled through the towering topiaries at Dubai Miracle Garden , the world’s largest natural flower garden with more than 150 million blooms in peak season. Walking amid these floral giants—horses, elephants, Smurfs, a life-size recreation of an Emirates Airbus A380—with fresh juice in hand was a treat, though I’d advise going early in the morning or near sunset, as there is very little shade inside. If you prefer to stick with air-conditioning, the recently opened AYA Universe —an otherworldly network of immersive sound and light installations at Wafi City Mall—is also highly photogenic.

Three people eat food at Arabian Teahouse

Kids can enjoy pancakes while parents fuel up on gahwa (traditional coffee) at Arabian Teahouse.

Finding great food for the whole family

Arabian Teahouse is a must-visit. Founded more than a quarter of a century ago, it attracts tourists and locals. Its spectacular Emirati breakfast trays are a sight to behold, heaped with balaleet (vermicelli laced with cardamom, cinnamon, and saffron and crowned with an omelet), bajella (fava beans), dango (a hummus-like chickpea mash without tahini), khameer (flatbread), chebab (pancakes), date molasses, and watermelon jam. The spread is generous enough to feed two adults but the kids’ menu is equally inspired with its camel-shaped pancakes and strawberry lassis.

Another meal that stood out for us—in part because it was much more than a meal—was Al Hadheerah , Bab Al Shams’ open-air dining venue and desert theater. Jules and I were spoiled for choice at its sprawling buffet, but his favorites included flame-licked lamb kebabs with Iranian rice, za’atar manakeesh , and an Emirati bread pudding called umm ali . Our charming Egyptian waiter even took us on a mini adventure to meet the camels that would be performing in that night’s show—a cabaret-like spectacle with wriggling belly dancers, whirling dervishes, and a full-on caravan.

Getting around

If you’re traveling with littles, consider hiring a driver and guide from Arabian Adventures . We were assigned a Keralan chauffeur named Jobin and a gregarious guide named Tareq, a Palestinian Jordanian expat who was raised in Kuwait but has been working in Dubai for a decade. Our luxury van was outfitted with a car seat for kids and the A/C was always blasting whenever we returned from an outing in Dubai’s ungodly heat. Arabian Adventures can map out a soup-to-nuts itinerary or gin up something fun on the spot—as when I asked Tareq to take us shopping for good-quality oud (agarwood) in the spice market. Not only did he sleuth out a deal on a lovely fragrance, he gave us a crash course in buying frankincense, demoing the proper way to waft its earthy smoke beneath the armpits and up to the nose.

Dubai’s Kids Go Free summer program offers numerous travel incentives for families. Up to two children can sleep in an adult room at no extra charge, eat free on the same meal plan as their parents, and gain free access to the hotel kids’ clubs at three-, four-, and five-star resorts. Tickets for children 13 and under are free with a paid adult at attractions like Legoland Dubai and AYA , while kids 12 and under go gratis at Expo City Dubai . Check the website for more details.

Dubai has topped the list as the world's most picturesque city to explore after dark, capturing the top spot among global destinations renowned for their night time beauty.

In a recent study conducted by Travelbag, Dubai has been crowned the world's most picturesque city by night. The study analysed a combination of factors including Instagram hashtags, light and noise pollution levels, and safety ratings for walking alone at night across 136 cities worldwide.

Travelbag is a holiday company that specialises in creating personalised long-haul travel experiences. Founded in 1979, it focuses on tailoring itineraries to destinations and provides customised travel plans, catering to a variety of interests, including cultural tours, beach vacations, road trips, and safaris.

According to the study, Dubai leads among long-haul destinations for its stunning night time views. The '#dubaiatnight' Instagram hashtag has over 27,387 tags, showcasing the city's picturesque evenings.

“Dubai's night time transformation is truly mesmerising. As night falls, Sheikh Zayed Road, with its towering skyscrapers and dynamic cityscape, becomes a glowing corridor,” said Fozil Rakhimov, an Uzbek tourist who often visits Dubai.

“The Marina waterfront is adorned with countless lights from luxury yachts, restaurants, and high-rise apartments in the surroundings. The reflections of these lights create a magical effect that enhances the beauty at night,” added Rakhimov.

Dubai also excelled in safety, ranking fourth globally with a safety score of 83.4 out of 100, ensuring that visitors can enjoy the city's beauty without concerns. According to Travelbag's findings, Dubai's combination of safety and ambiance makes it a standout destination for night exploration.

Several factors contribute to Dubai's strong safety rating. The city maintains a well-developed infrastructure, including well-lit streets and public areas, monitored by extensive security measures. Law enforcement and emergency services are readily accessible and responsive, ensuring quick assistance if needed. Dubai's strict regulations and enforcement of laws contribute to a low crime rate, enhancing overall safety perceptions among visitors.

Zsuzsa Vinczeller, a tourist who visited Dubai, described her feelings for the city. She said: “I'm very grateful that I had the chance to visit Dubai. It has its own beauty, as every city does. Of course, some of the buildings are incredible, and I love their architecture.

“Everyone I talked to who lives there, from taxi drivers to office workers, loves Dubai and they would love to stay there long term, so that must mean something,” added Vinczeller.

Many residents and tourists have posted photos and videos on social media, captioning how the city turns magical at night.

Regines Blog, an Instagram user was impressed by Dubai Marina’s Skyline and how it comes alive at night. She posted: “Dubai - Marina Harbour - beautiful Skyline in the nighttime.”

Kevin Kelly shared a series of posts on Instagram from Burj Khalifa, where one can see the entire city glowing.

He captioned his post: “Not only is Burj Khalifa the world’s tallest building but it has also broken two other impressive records: tallest structure, previously held by the KVLY-TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, and tallest free-standing structure, previously held by Toronto’s CN Tower.”

Theresa Schiffhauer posted a photo on her social media handle, the beauty of DIFC.

The post read: “Evening strolls with City Views. Dubai is such a multifaceted place - like every week I find new gems. Have you ever been to DIFC? If not, you have to visit! There are so many incredible restaurants and you will get stunning views.”
