Can This New Collective of Indie Venues Revolutionize Touring?

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

The fight to secure federal funding for independent venues during the Covid-19 pandemic was remarkable on several fronts: Not only was it a rare bipartisan cause in an era of intense political polarization, but it came about thanks to a interconnected, but often disparate network of independent venues and promoters that united almost instantly at a moment of deep crisis. Now, after helping to secure the future of live independent music, a group of venues is offering up a new vision of the future.

D Tour is a new venture founded by indie venues and promoters in nine states, ranging from 200-cap clubs to 8,000-seat theaters. The group’s goal is to not only streamline the booking process for indie artists, but use that united front to help younger acts develop and reach bigger audiences on the road.

“Music fans and indie artists alike understand how critical their local independent venues and promoters are to their city’s live music ecosystem,” says Chris Cobb, a D Tour member who owns Nashville’s Exit/In and Bonafide Live, Inc. “The pandemic exposed the fragility of these ecosystems and broken aspects of the old systems. D Tour is a new model that offers independents a level of support they’ve never had. D Tour gives me confidence for the future of independents everywhere!”

D Tour will essentially function as an interdependent booking collective. Artists will have one point of contact while booking their shows, but individual members will bring key local knowledge to the process. Jessie Hartke, co-owner of Hartke Presents in Wichita, Kansas, explains that the goal is to not only ensure artists are playing the right venues, but that their shows are backed by the right promoters (D Tour will also be able to bolster local promotion with a united national campaign.)

Additionally, Hartke notes that while D Tour will function as a collective, the revenue generated from individual shows will stay in those markets, “further strengthening local businesses and local music scenes.” Shows, she adds, will be produced independently too, allowing for “a deeper understanding of each market, ultimately benefiting the artists, the fans, local communities, and all involved in the show.”

Editor’s picks

The 100 best tv episodes of all time, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, 25 most influential creators of 2024.

Multi-instrumentalist Elise Trouw , who will hit the road in support of her upcoming album, will be the first artist to test out the D Tour model. The process so far, she says, has been extremely efficient: All her offers arrived on a single form and the deals for the various venues were largely similar; efforts to plan past tours, she notes, were marked by a much more “piecemeal approach.”

“It feels like there will be much more attention to detail for the tour,” Trouw adds. “The network of venues are already holding regular calls to discuss planning and marketing. These calls will continue through the tour and if there’s anything we learn from shows I’ve played, those ideas will be communicated to the remaining venues so that we are all on the same page and improving as we go.”

Teamsters won't endorse a candidate, so local unions back harris, sean combs offers private plane, mansion, kids' passports in bail plea, sean combs’ alleged witness tampering: 'gaslighting' and dangled rent payments.

Ultimately, D Tour’s mission is to fashion a future for live independent music that is, yes, profitable, but more importantly, collectively sustainable for both venues and artists. The wide support independent venues received in the thick of the Covid-19 pandemic spoke to how crucial these spaces are in the live music ecosystem, nurturing artists as they graduate from clubs to theaters to arenas.

It’s that aspect — artist development — that most excites D Tour member Tobi Parks, owner of the 250-cap XBK Live in Des Moines, Iowa. “Our indie venues have always been the breeding ground for the next generation of professional artists,” she says. “By working together, we have the ability to break artists through our network of indie rooms and help artists in our own communities build a nationwide platform and launch careers as touring artists. We are able to break down the traditional power structures and build a network of support to nurture rising talent. I think we’ll see artists that may have only been locally successful find larger regional and national success through the efforts of D Tour.”

Songwriting legend JD Souther dies a week before his Phoenix tour launch

Portrait of Ed Masley

JD Souther, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee who co-wrote several of the Eagles’ greatest hits , wrote some of Linda Ronstadt’s most beloved songs and topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts with the wonderfully Orbison-esque “You’re Only Lonely,” died peacefully at his home in New Mexico on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Souther was 78.

The news arrives a week before Souther was scheduled to launch a tour called Together Again with Karla Bonoff, a fellow traveler on the ’70s singer-songwriter scene, with a sold-out show on Sept. 24 at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix.

Born in Detroit and raised in Amarillo, Texas, Souther made his first recordings with an Amarillo group, the Cinders, at Norman Petty Studios in Clovis, New Mexico, resulting in a 45 released in 1965 on RIC label. The following year, the Cinders signed to Warner Bros. Records and released a second single as John David and the Cinders.

JD Souther's scene included Jackson Browne and the Eagles

In the late ‘60s, Souther moved to Los Angeles, where he and future Eagle Glenn Frey became roommates and collaborators in the short-lived folk-rock duo Longbranch Pennywhistle.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

That was shortly before Jackson Browne had him over to David Geffen's house for an audition, which he nailed, resulting in two classic albums on Asylum, 1972's "John David Souther" and 1976's "Black Rose."

In 1972, he formed the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band with Chris Hillman of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield and Poco. They released two albums before creative tensions caused the group to splinter.

JD Souther found solo success with 'You're Only Lonely,' 'Her Town Too'

In 1979, he peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 while topping the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts with the breakthrough single that was destined to remain his biggest solo hit, “You’re Only Lonely.”

In 1981, he was on the charts with “Her Town Too,” a duet with James Taylor that made it to No. 11 on the Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Adult Contemporary charts.

JD Souther wrote 'Best of My Love,' 'Heartache Tonight' for the Eagles

His contributions to the Eagles catalog include some of their greatest hits, "Best of My Love", "Heartache Tonight" and "New Kid in Town” chief among them. He also co-wrote “Doolin-Dalton,” “James Dean,” “You Never Cry Like a Lover,” “Victim of Love,” “The Sad Café” and “Last Good Time in Town" and was well-represented on our countdown of the Eagles' best songs.

A song Souther wrote and recorded on “John David Souther” got a second lease on life in 2007 when the Eagles included their version the “Long Road Out of Eden” album and released it as a single.

He also co-wrote “The Heart of the Matter,” a solo hit for the Eagles’ Don Henley in 1989.

Souther had a long musical association with Linda Ronstadt

Souther dated Ronstadt in the ‘70s, co-producing “Don’t Cry Now,” which included the Souther songs “The Fast One,” “I Can Almost See It” and “Don’t Cry Now.”

His songs appeared on several of her biggest albums, including "Faithless Love" on "Heart Like a Wheel," the title track to “Prisoner in Disguise” (which also featured Souther’s “Silver Blue"), “Simple Man, Simple Dream” on “Simple Dreams” and "White Rhythm & Blues" on "Living in the USA."

Souther’s vocals also featured prominently on several Ronstadt songs, including "Prisoner in Disguise," “Silver Blue,” "Sometimes You Just Can't Win" and "Hearts Against the Wind” (for the 1980 film "Urban Cowboy").

In 2013, Souther was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, whose website celebrates his legacy as “a principal architect of the Southern California sound and a major influence on a generation of songwriters.”

Souther also acted, with recurring roles on TV’s “Thirtysomething” and “Nashville.” Other acting credits include “Postcards from the Edge,” “Purgatory,” “My Girl 2” and “Deadline.”

'There was no plan B,' Souther said of his music career

In 2019, Souther spoke to The Arizona Republic about his life in music.

"I don't think there was ever a point where I intended to do anything else,” he said. “There was no plan B. I started beating on things as a drummer when I was a little bitty kid. I started taking violin lessons in the fourth grade. I was in orchestra for a couple years."

That was risky, he said, "because I had to carry my violin to football practice every Wednesday. And Texas football players in the fourth and fifth grade were not necessarily respectful of a scrawny kid with a violin. So I never got great at football. I was just too skinny. But I got better at fighting and a little bit better at violin."

From there, he learned to play the clarinet, then tenor sax and back to drums. And then nothing else mattered. "I'm just a natural born drummer," he said.

Souther on hearing Linda Ronstadt sing his 'Faithless Love'

Souther’s first love was jazz, which he returned to on 2015’s “Tenderness.”

He fell in with the '70s country-rock scene because it was there, as he told The Republic.

"Everybody around us was playing acoustic guitar and trying to write songs,” he said. “So I went home to Texas and got an acoustic guitar from my dad's music store, the Texas Musical Instrument Co. I got a Gibson Dove, and I went back to California and started plunking around on it. And it turned out I guess I had a knack for that too."

Asked if he recalled the point at which it started feeling like he must be doing something right, he didn’t hesitate.

"It was after I heard Linda Ronstadt's version of 'Faithless Love,'" he said.

"And then other people started recording it. And people started telling me about it. Smokey Robinson told me once that he thought it was perfect. Peter Asher told me he thought it was the best bridge he'd ever heard. Dorothy Fields, who was a great lyricist from the '40s and '50s who wrote 'On the Sunny Side of the Street' and 'The Way You Look Tonight,' told me she thought it was the perfect song. That was a moment, I have to say."

Ed has covered pop music for The Republic since 2007, reviewing festivals and concerts, interviewing legends, covering the local scene and more. He did the same in Pittsburgh for more than a decade. 'A Beautiful Noise' tells Neil Diamond's story as national tour kicks off at PPAC

PROVIDENCE – Later this month – though not on a “September Morn,” as Neil Diamond once crooned – a talented cast will collaborate to tell the musical memoir of Diamond.

The national tour of “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical” begins in Providence, starting Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Providence Performing Arts Center , kicking off the 25 city tour.

PPAC spokeswoman Caitlyn DiPompo says the musical relies on an interesting storytelling tactic as an older Neil Diamond, through therapy sessions, reflects on two marriages and other life events.

A therapist will ask Diamond about different emotions throughout his life and how they inspired certain songs. With that said, the cast will capture those moments with some of Diamond’s most memorable songs.

"American Idol” winner Nick Fradiani will reprise his role of "Neil Diamond – then"’" from the Broadway production. Tony nominee  Robert Westenberg will play the older Diamond, reflecting on his past.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The cast also includes Hannah Jewel Kohn (Marcia Murphey), Lisa Reneé Pitts (Doctor), Michael Accardo (Bert Berns/ Kieve Diamond), Tuck Milligan (Fred Weintraub/ Tommy O'Rourke), Kate A. Mulligan (Ellie Greenwich/ Rose Diamond) and Tiffany Tatreau (Jaye Posner).

During a recent interview, Westenberg – whose resume includes a long list of musical theater, television and other credits – expressed his excitement about playing the musical icon.

Just as Diamond was known for strumming his guitar as a younger man on the streets of New York in the 1960s, Westenberg can recall his younger years of singing Diamond songs with a friend and a guitar in the 1970s.

“It’s an honor to be doing this. I have to set the awe-struck sensibility aside and play the character in that situation. He is an older gentleman with a problem to solve and that is my struggle and journey throughout the play,” Westenberg said.

Westernberg credits the cast, production crew and everyone else involved for making it possible – calling it a “fertile rehearsal process.”

“The rehearsal process has been rich and discovery-laden,” Westenberg added, expressing confidence in a great theatrical experience for audience members and the entire ensemble.

Westenberg highlighted the challenges of his role, which include staying in character as the older Diamond reflects on his life through his live songs.

“I’m on stage for the entire play and the most challenging part is the intensity of the listening process and staying totally connected when I am not verbally engaged in a scene,” he said.

“You have to let it happen as it goes,” Westenberg says.

Westenberg’s stout resume includes Broadway credits of “Into the Woods” (Tony nomination, Drama Desk Award); “The Secret Garden”; “Sunday in the Park with George”; “Les Misérables”;  “1776”; “Company”; "Abe Lincoln in Illinois” (Drama League Outstanding Artist); "A Christmas Carol" and "Zorba" (Theatre World Award).

His national tours include “Zorba,” “Funny Girl,” and “The Full Monty.”

More: Trinity's 'A Christmas Carol' has a new home for 2024. What you need to know

For film and television, his credits include performances in "The Ice Storm," "Before and After," "The Stars Fell on Henrietta," "Mr. and Mrs. Bridge," "Swift Justice," "Central Park West" and "Law and Order: SVU."

Westenberg says this role, though he has performed on stage at the time of the interview, might be his most gratifying one.

“I discovered Neil Diamond in the ‘70s when I was in school and he has been a fixture in my firmament for many years,” Westenberg said.

He says “Kentucky Woman” and “Cherry, Cherry” are his favorites but don’t expect Westenberg to be belting out those tunes, instead, Westenberg says his younger counterpart Fradiani – who is more athletic and a “better singer” will handle most of the singing from Diamond’s hit collection.

"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation with returns to Mexico City and London, while also opening the season in Korea for the first time. In addition, we can’t wait to celebrate the tradition of the sport in the Dominican Republic with our visit to Santo Domingo next March. We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."

The MLB World Tour schedule for next year includes the return of games to the United Kingdom and Mexico for a second consecutive season, after the 2023 London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals and Mexico City Series between the Giants and Padres, in addition to new stops in Korea and the Dominican Republic.

“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association. “The series announced today will allow fans around the globe to gain a first-hand appreciation for the unmatched skill and infectious enthusiasm players display every time they go to work. We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”

Here's a look at each of the four international series in 2024.

Seoul Series

The Dodgers and Padres will open up the 2024 season with two games in Korea from March 20-21.

The Seoul Series will mark the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the 50 U.S. states and Canada, and the first time in five years. Previous international openers include:

• 1999 -- Monterrey, Mexico (Rockies vs. Padres) • 2000 -- Tokyo, Japan (Mets vs. Cubs) • 2001 -- San Juan, Puerto Rico (Rangers vs. Blue Jays) • 2004 -- Tokyo, Japan (Rays vs. Yankees) • 2008 -- Tokyo, Japan (Red Sox vs. A's) • 2012 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners) • 2014 -- Sydney, Australia (Dodgers vs. D-backs) • 2019 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners)

It will be the Dodgers' first international games since they played the Padres in Mexico in 2018, and their second Opening Day abroad after the 2014 season opener in Australia.

"The Dodgers have a long and proud history of helping to grow the game abroad, highlighted by our trips to Mexico, China and Australia. It's very exciting to add Korea to the list," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said. "I know our players are thrilled to put their talents on display in a country so rich with baseball tradition and talent, including former Dodgers Chan Ho Park, Hee-Seop Choi and Hyun Jin Ryu."

The Padres will be playing internationally for a second straight season, but in a new country, going from the 2023 Mexico City Series to the 2024 Seoul Series. Like the Dodgers, they've also played abroad on Opening Day before, in the inaugural international season opener back in 1999.

"Korea is a great baseball country with a rich tradition, passionate fans, and talented players, including current Padre and San Diego fan favorite Ha-Seong Kim," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said. "The Padres are proud to serve alongside the Dodgers as global ambassadors for the game of baseball with our historic 2024 Korea Series."

Mexico City Series

The second Mexico City Series will feature the Astros and Rockies for a pair of games on April 27 and 28, almost exactly a year after this season's inaugural Mexico City Series.

Both Houston and Colorado last played internationally in Mexico, but in Monterrey, not Mexico City. The Astros played two regular-season games against the Angels there in 2019, and the Rockies played an exhibition series against the D-backs that same year.

The Astros have played exhibition games in Mexico City before, in 2016 against the Padres and 2004 against the Marlins.

London Series

The London Series returns for its third edition overall, with the Mets and Phillies facing off at London Stadium on June 8 and 9.

The Mets will be playing abroad for the first time since 2010, when they faced the Marlins in Puerto Rico. But they're no stranger to international games, having participated in both MLB's first-ever international regular season games in 1996 in Mexico and MLB's first-ever regular-season games in Japan in 2000.

• 2024 London Series will feature NL East rivalry in Mets-Phils

"Interest in baseball is growing all over the world, and to bring the Mets' 'never-say-die' attitude to sports fans in London is a tremendous honor," Mets owner Steve Cohen said. "Our Queens family is ready to show London a great time with exciting baseball and amazing experiences that create new fans and build the Mets community throughout the United Kingdom."

The Phillies have never played regular-season games internationally, and have left the U.S. and Canada only once, over 50 years ago, for a pair of exhibition games against the Pirates in San Juan in 1977.

"Major League Baseball has done an excellent job of expanding its footprint internationally, and we are honored to play a role in that effort as part of the 2024 London Series," Phillies managing partner John Middleton said. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our players' talents and highlight the excitement that comes with a Phillies-Mets matchup for our fans in the UK and for those who have never attended a baseball game."

Dominican Republic Series

In addition to the three international regular-season series planned for in 2024, the Red Sox and Rays will play a Spring Training series in Santo Domingo at Estadio Quisqueya from March 9-10.

"This unique opportunity builds on our long-standing connection to the Dominican Republic and allows us to celebrate the remarkable talents and rich cultural heritage of a country whose passion for the game has distinctly shaped our organization," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said. "From the players who have passed through our Dominican Republic Academy to those who have helped us win championships, we have been fortunate to witness the profound impact of Dominican players within our game, and we are thrilled to be able to bring Red Sox baseball to such a vibrant baseball community next year."

Exhibition games are also a key part of the MLB World Tour, which includes up to 16 exhibition games being played internationally between 2023 and ‘26, as well as up to 24 regular-season games spanning Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Manchester City, who re-wrote the history books by winning the English Premier League four times in a row in 2023-24, have arrived in Indian capital city as part of the club's Champions 4-in-a-row Trophy Tour. To celebrate this historic achievement, Manchester City have brought the Premier League trophy to New Delhi, alongside the Club World Cup and Community Shield trophies. The trophies will be accompanied alongside former Manchester City and England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips across a range of activities for Cityzens in India, including a fan event on September 22, where fans are invited to watch Manchester City take on Arsenal FC at Vegas Mall.

Speaking on the visit as a whole, Club Legend Wright-Phillips said, "We're really looking forward to visiting India as part of the Club's Champions 4-in-a-row tour. The club were fortunate enough to visit last year and we're excited to interact with our fan base in India again, as we bring the Premier League, Club World Cup and Community Shield Trophies around the world."

Commenting on the fixture against Arsenal FC, he added, "Our latest visit also coincides with our important Premier League fixture against Arsenal which fans can watch at a special fan event and screening on the Sunday."

After a memorable 2023/24 season, the Cityzens are keen to build on that success, with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland leading the line.

Ahead of the game against Arsenal, the defending champions stand at the top of the Premier League table with 12 points and four wins from as many games.

As part of the Champions-4-in-A-Row Trophy Tour, Manchester City will also be providing a free coaching course to upskill the local community and grassroots coaches to promote healthier lives through football. This is part of Manchester City's commitment to upskilling over 150 community coaches to leave a lasting impact in five cities.
