The 4 Best Travel Litter Boxes for Your Cat's Next Road Trip

In This Article

  • Our Top Picks
  • What to Look For

Why Trust The Spruce Pets?

As stressful traveling can be for us humans, it can be even more overwhelming for our feline companions. After transporting cats throughout the country for my family’s North Carolina-based rescue, Tabby Trail Rescue , and traveling with my own pets, I know this struggle far too well.

My experiences have emphasized the importance of being well-prepared when traveling with your cat, and after years of practice, one item stands out among the rest: a reliable travel litter box.

A travel litter box isn’t your everyday litter box. You need one that’s easy to travel with, while remaining leak proof and durable enough to withstand long days in transit. I’ve tried many different travel litter boxes, which helped me find five of the best—from single-use options that are great for quick trips to reusable boxes that are perfect for a rental stay.

Pro tip: if you’re worried about your cat locating its litter box during transit, throw a bit of the Dr. Elsey’s Litter Box Attractant into your cat’s travel litter box so they can easily locate it.

Best Overall

Sport pet large portable litter box.

Collapsible

Easy to clean

Handles for travel

Doesn’t come with litter

If you’re embarking on a longer trip or looking for a multi-use option, I highly recommend the Sport Pet People Waterproof Litter Box. It’s made to be reusable with its waterproof construction and collapsible design that makes it a durable, effective option for setting up your cats’ bathroom anywhere from a pit stop to your vacation rental. Speaking of travel, it features a collapsible design with convenient handles that make it not only easy to store, but to carry as well.

And I haven’t even shared the best part, cleaning this litter box is an absolute breeze. I’ve found that it holds no odor or stains thanks to its polyester construction and to do so, all you have to do is dump the old litter and rinse with a mellow soap and water (or disinfectant of choice).

If you have a bigger cat, this litter box also comes in a larger size. My two cats are roughly 10 pounds each, and are able to use the default size with ease.

Materials: Polyester | Dimensions: 16.5 x 12.5 x 4.75 inches, 15.8 x 19.7 x 5.3 inches | Color: gray | Waterproof? Yes | Machine washable? No | Weight : 1 pound

Best Disposable

Litter one biodegradable disposable cat litter box kit.

Suitable for weeks of use

Comes with biodegradable Pellet Litter

Disposable, single-use

Lacks odor control

Don’t let its cardboard construction fool you, the Litter One Biodegradable Disposable Cat Litter Box is built for long haul trips. While yes this litter box is single-use in nature, its all-in-one design is intended to last you between four to six weeks as it comes with an incredibly absorbent pellet litter (that is biodegradable might I add) and a genius construction that separates pellet solids with urine. It also comes with biodegradable poop bags to dispose of waste and a travel scooper so you can leave yours at home.

This litter box system is truly the one-and-done option that will last you your entire vacation, without the worry of transporting it back home.

Materials: Cardboard, pellet litter | Dimensions: 19 x 9 inches x 4 inches | Colors: Brown | Waterproof? No | Machine washable? No | Weight : 11 pounds

Best Disposable Litter Pans

Cat’s pride all-in-one disposable litter pan.

Easy to clean setup

All-in-one nature

Plastic, durable

Clay litter (sticks to paws)

This may not be my personal go-to, but plenty of my friends that work in animal rescue swear by the Cat’s Pride All-in-One Disposable Litter Pan, which comes in a ready-to-use setup. They prefer plastic to cardboard disposable litter boxes because of its water-proof design that keeps scents and liquids in, though plastic is less sustainable. Another downside is the included clay litter, which sticks to feet and tracks outside of the box. These disposable pans come in packs of five.

Materials: Plastic, clay litter | Dimensions: 19.8 x 12.8 x 9 inches | Colors: Gray | Waterproof? Yes | Machine washable? No | Weight: 6 pounds

Best Budget

Frisco disposable litter box.

Lightweight

Budget-friendly

Water-resistant

Operating a cat rescue, my mom and I are planners by nature. And as such, we always think of the what-if scenarios so that’s why we make sure to always have a handful of litter box options, including a budget-friendly one that’s easy to fill with our own litter, but durable enough to withstand travel, or a feral cat going through dewormer (if you know, you know). For that, we make sure to keep a set of the Frisco Disposable Litter Boxes around. At roughly $3 a box, they’re a compact option to give your cat easy relief on the go.

And just as any litter box should, especially a travel one, this one is leak-free and comes with a heavy-duty construction that can withstand up to a month of continued bathroom use before beginning to break down.

Materials: 100 percent recycled cardboard | Dimensions: 17.7 x 13 x 4 inches | Colors: Brown | Waterproof? Water-resistant | Machine washable? No | Weight: Less than a pound

Final Verdict

For travel days, our go-to travel litter box for cats is the One Biodegradable Disposable Cat Litter Box . Although it's single-use, it's made with recycled materials and can be composted after its use. Plus, it comes with everything you need for any length of stay you have planned. If you’re looking for a reusable option, we love the Sport Pet People Waterproof Litter Box that doesn’t absorb odors thanks to its waterproof design and is highly transportable.

What to Look For in a Travel Litter Box

The material of your travel litter box is incredibly important. Above all, these options are meant to prevent accidents or spillage. That’s why when looking for an excellent travel option, it’s important to look at both the material of the box itself and the litter it either comes with, or you choose to travel with. Opt for something with a durable, lined cardboard, plastic, or better-yet a water-proof polyester option that can be used again and again.

The last thing you want on a road trip or vacation is to haul heavy pounds of litter into small boxes, or to lug around bulky inconveniently sized boxes. That’s why when I’m traveling I look for what is going to be the easiest setup-wise for myself and most comfortable for my cat. Lightweight all-in-one options are my personal preference, or reusable litter boxes that easily pack down and set up.

Our Favorite Accessories

We’ve found these three tools to be invaluable when traveling with a cat. They include portable packs of crystal litter for easy litter swaps, a usefully portable litter scoop, and a pack of litter-attractant herbs that can help your cat acclimate to a travel bathroom scenario:

  • PetSafe ScoopFree Premium Blue Crystal Litter Travel Packs
  • FamiEver Multifunctional Cat Litter Scoop
  • Dr. Elsey’s Litter Box Attractant

What To Look For When Buying A Portable Travel Litter Box For Cats

best travel litter box for cats

Let’s talk a bit about what features are most important when choosing a portable litter box for your kitty.

Portable cat toilet boxes can be fabric-based or disposable.

Both types have pros and cons, but which type suits you and your furry friend the best depends on how often you’ll need the box.

A disposable toilet is an excellent choice for short trips or emergencies since it’s easy to maintain. But for regular use, a fabric-based one is better.

No matter the type of litter box, it should be made of high-quality materials to withstand your cat’s nail and not collapse during use.

You want lightweight nylon fabric, heavy-duty canvas, or Oxford cloth. For disposable boxes, paper and recycled materials work the best.

Your chosen toilet box should also be water-repellant and waterproofed to prevent urine from soaking everything.

Odor control is also important because you don’t want to stink up the car.

A collapsible cat litter box is smaller than regular ones, so pay attention to the measurements and ensure it’s big enough for your kitty.

Also, the compact size matters if you’re trying to fit it in your luggage.

Do Cats Need a Litter Box When Traveling?

You shouldn’t travel without a suitable toilet box to take care of your cat’s biological needs. Your cat will need to pee/poop sooner or later and it’s better if you’re prepared.

How Do You Travel With a Cat Litter Box?

You pack the toilet box with your luggage and all the necessary supplies. Disposable boxes and portable ones are usually light and don’t take much space.

Will Cats Use a Litter Box in the Car?

It depends on your cat’s character. Some kitties are too scared to do their business, while others will pee inside their carrier or cage the moment you hit the road.

Get a big cat carrier or cage so that you can put the box inside, or line the carrier with waterproof liners to soak up the mess.

Portable toilet boxes for cats are a great solution for vacations, camping emergencies, or family trips.

They’re light, don’t take much space, and are made of waterproof material. Unfortunately, fabric-based and disposable boxes are often available in a single size and can be too small for large breeds.

But most cats like them and will use them to take care of business.

All these portable litter boxes we’ve reviewed are excellent alternatives to traditional cat toilets and will appeal to your feline companion’s taste.

But we highly recommend Pet Fit for Life’s toilet box because it’s made from heavy-duty nylon fabric, doesn’t leak or smell, and comes with a pet travel bowl.

Travel Cat Litter Box Buying Guide

  • Best Overall Travel Litter Box (Great for Airplanes!)

Great Travel Litter Box for Large Cats

Premium pick portable litter box (with a cover), best for car travel, best disposable small travel litter box, disposable large portable litter box, using a portable cat litter box on a plane, using a portable litter box in a car, diy travel litter box, frequently asked questions.

travel box for kitten

While on the road or sky, it’s about keeping litter and related supplies neat and tidy, with an efficient system. Cats form habits fast, so take advantage of this.

When buying a litter box for traveling, consider the below.

Let’s start with size. Portable means “smaller” in most contexts. This is the same with cat litter boxes.

While you want to go smaller, your cat might reject a box that’s too tight. The general rule is that a travel cat litter box should be 1.5 times bigger than your cat.

Definitely have your cat try out the box at home to make sure it holds her comfortably while she takes care of business.

Portability

In addition to being smaller, a portable cat litter box needs true portability. This means that it has some kind of feature that makes it easy to take along.

This could be anything from a foldable design to a briefcase design with built-in handle.

You also need to pay attention to dimensions. If you’re flying, ensure the litter box can be tucked into your carry-on bag in accordance with airline policies.

For long car trips, you might want to ensure your cat carrier can fit a portable litter box. It’s the safest place for them do their business, in my opinion.

Construction

You need a well-built box that’s not going to fall apart when you’re in a pinch. Here’s my rundown of essentials:

  • Water resistance.
  • Able to be cleaned.
  • Durable enough for cat’s weight and movements.
  • If reusable, fabrics should be something like heavy canvas, nylon or Oxford cloth.
  • If disposable, the material should have moisture and impact resistance.

Disposable or Reusable

You have to decide if you want a disposable or reusable box. For shorter car trips on occasion, disposable is fine.

You need to spring for reusable if you’re flying because a disposable box can create a mess and does not fold up. And consider a reusable box if you take long road trips with Fluffy and want something handy to go with the cat carrier in the car .

Reusable boxes should also have water-resistant liners that let you spot clean, use wet wipes or freshen up with disinfectant spray without everything turning damp.

Best Overall Travel Litter Box (Great for Airplanes too!)

The NECOICHI Portable Stress Free Series Litter Box is our overall best travel litter box because of its durable construction, relatively high sides, truly portable nature, and value.

Featuring a durable waterproof liner, this leak-guarding box is a breeze to use. It gets portability points for being able to fold flat and snap close nice and small.

You’ll have no trouble getting it into your suitcase or carry-on bag when flying. This box has high sides that make your life easier because you won’t be picking up loose litter your cat kicked around on the floor of an airplane bathroom.

If traveling by car, the NECOICHI litter box fits in many carriers. This is because it was designed to fit in its own matching NECOICHI Carrier , one of the best cat carriers to include a litter box! The set is very cute.

Thousands of positive reviews don’t lie. Many who reviewed this box praised its thickness and durability, but said it was not for medium or larger cats.

Rating Breakdown:

  • Portability:  10/10
  • Performance:  8/10
  • Durability:  8/10
  • Price:  10/10
  • Overall Score: 9

What We Liked:

  • Sides are relatively high for the size
  • Claw-proof fabric
  • Seamless design is great for leaks

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Doesn’t zip closed
  • No compartments for holding plastic bags or scoopers

For us large cat owners, the Petisfam Portable Litter Box is a great choice. It is 4-5 inches longer and wider than the NECOICHI product above.

Overall, this box features a neat design that allows you to travel with a big cat in confidence. The whole thing is constructed of heavy-duty vinyl that’s so easy to wipe and keep clean.

Once filled with litter, the Petisfam resembles a briefcase, completed with zippers and a nice handle. The zipping feature is what keeps litter, odors, and leaks in.

Lightweight and easy to carry, this zipped litter box actually folds down to the size of a wallet when it’s not opened up for use.

Amazingly, it holds about as much litter as a standard litter box you’d use at home. This earns big points from me if you’re worried that your cat will be shy with low litter.

For extra convenience, this litter box even comes with a scooper and collapsible water bowl,

  • Portability:  9/10
  • Performance:  7/10

Our premium pick litter box for traveling is Travel Cat’s Porta Pawty. For those unfamiliar with the name, they are behind the Your Cat Backpack , one of the best cat backpacks on the market.

Travel Cat is a New York based company with a mission to be the best cat travel brand, and this product shows off that sentiment.

This lightweight, collapsable litter box is nice to use and my top pick if you’re looking for a cat litter box that you can use in your camping tent, RV or hotel room.

I like the seamless interior that makes cleaning effortless. This litter box is so easy to wipe clean and dry without fanfare. You can even hose it down!

The zippered top cover is great for spill prevention and odor control. My favorite part is the bonus top pocket that actually provides a spot for storing your scooper and extra litter. This box is fully collapsable for easy transport.

Again, this is a deluxe design for a price that’s similar to other portable boxes for cats that lack the same features and quality name.

  • Performance:  10/10
  • Durability:  10/10
  • Price:  6/10
  • Overall Score: 8.75
  • Quality construction
  • Easy to clean and durable
  • Made in USA
  • Trusted brand
  • Zips fully and collapsable
  • Bonus compartment for scooper and extra litter

The best travel litter box for use in cars is the Petleader Collapsible Portable Cat Litter Box .

This portable cat litter box is my top pick for stability with an enclosed design. Unlike some of the “floppier” options out there, this box has a perfectly level bottom that is easy to place on a car or airplane floor.

And for cats who use a top entry litter box at home, this is the pick for them.

It’s also a breeze to carry from your car to a hotel or airport. I like that it just looks like a normal cat carrying case that doesn’t have “my cat goes in this” written all over it.

You can zip this box all the way around for spill and odor control.

You also get bonus double pockets that can hold your scooper, plastic bags, toys and a cat bowl. Carting it all around is a breeze thanks to this design’s ultra-sturdy handles.

Made from 600D Oxford material with PVC lining, this “box for on the go” protects against leaks. This waterproof portable cat litter box is also very easy to clean.

Dimensions: 17.7 x 11 x 11 (inches).

  • Portability:  6/10
  • Overall Score: 8.25
  • Flat, secure bottom that sits evenly on floors
  • Good leak and odor protection
  • Windows make it easy to scoop litter
  • Sunroof for your cat
  • Collapsable
  • Zipper can stick a little
  • Interior is a little cramped for bigger cats who don’t like small spaces

Kitty's Wonderbox Disposable Litter Box

If you’re going for a cheap, portable cat litter box that you never have to worry about cleaning, this three-pack purchase is a great pick for small or normal sized cats.

I love that you don’t have to feel wasteful with this option because it’s made from 100 percent biodegradable recycled paper.

This box is made for all types of litters. If you’re planning to set it up in a hotel or campsite, it’s actually graded to last for up to four weeks! It’s designed to be durable enough to not tear or leak through multiple uses.

The biodegradable material used with this box actually does a better job at neutralizing odors than plastic boxes. You’ll probably find that your on-the-go litter stays fresher than your home litter!

  • Portability:  5/10
  • Durability:  7/10
  • Price:  8/10
  • Overall Score: 7
  • Great budget option. Each box in the packs works out to just a few dollars.
  • Just throw it away when you’re done!
  • Made from recycled and biodegradable materials!
  • You’re paying for a throwaway item.
  • Clay litter can “gunk up” this box pretty easily.
  • Your cat might be attracted to “scratching” this box due to the feel of the material.

Nature's Miracle Jumbo Disposable Litter Box

Owners of larger cats will find this to be the best disposable travel litter box – it comes in a jumbo size!

This two-pack product solves odor issues using natural baking soda. These boxes are made from landfill-safe recycled paper. They are designed to avoid shredding and leaking.

This is a versatile choice that’s intended for use with all litter types. I like that this company uses a breathable material that allows for airflow to reduce moisture buildup that’s going to disintegrate your box prematurely.

You can expect up to four weeks of usage with each box. If your cat is a privacy lover, you can actually cut a square in one box before placing it over the other box to make a “roof” for your cat.

  • Overall Score: 7.25
  • Made from landfill-safe and recycled materials.
  • Four weeks of usage per box.
  • Good depth to mimic the box you use at home.
  • A little pricey. You’re halfway to the cost of a reusable litter box.
  • A pain to scoop clean if your cat likes to pee in the corners due to indentations.

A travel cat litter box setup in a car works pretty much the same way. The difference is that you have more freedom about where you set up your box.

You may want to just set up the box in your trunk or back compartment. Or bring your cat into a restroom. I advocate getting a cat carrier that comes with its own litter box , or one that is large enough to fit a portable tray.

I caution against setting a portable litter box outside in a parking lot or rest area because your cat could get spooked enough to run.

As Dr. Ruth MacPete (DVM) points out , your cat may bolt from the car at the first opportunity because they assume that you are taking them to the vet because they associate car rides with vet trips!

Don’t risk turning a rest stop into a tragedy by letting your cat out of the car to use the litter box.

“Once your cat is out of the carrier and wandering in the car, do not open or shut the car doors unless your cat is wearing a harness (not collar) and leash,” the vets at All Feline Hospital advise.

“If your cat were to suddenly dart out of the car, it is much easier to step on a trailing leash that to try and grab a scared freaked out cat.” I agree!

Don’t Leave the Litter Box Out in the Car

Some of you may think to leave the box out on the floor of your car because you want to “free range” your cat during a long drive.

This is a big negative. Letting a cat explore freely in your car during a trip can be a stressful, dangerous thing. She’ll start roaming at some point.

Being unsecured in your car can be very dangerous for a cat if you need to brake quickly. Your cat can even startle you by hopping in your lap to turn you into a distracted driver at a very precarious moment.

It’s important to place your cat in carrying case that secures to the seat using the seat buckle. This case should be the appropriate size for your cat with proper ventilation.

Let’s talk about being hygienic and courteous when traveling with a cat on a plane. It’s a lot like traveling with a child! Your cat is going to need potty breaks.

The good news is that it’s normal for your cat to eat and drink less frequently while traveling simply because the situation is a little stressful.

You don’t need to worry as long as kitty’s appetite bounces right back once you’re settled at your destination.

How to Set Up a Litter Box on a Plane

Bring your cat to the airplane’s restroom in regular intervals. Base this on your cat’s typical behaviors and usual times. Be more frequent just in case.

Set up the portable box on the floor of the restroom. You can even bring along a towel or sheet that you place down under the box.

  • Next, fill the litter box with litter
  • Your cat will likely know what to do. If not, gently coax her
  • Use a plastic bag to collect clumped litter for disposal
  • Flush solids
  • Wash, dry, refold the litter tray

Never leave litter scattered on the floor. Pouring litter down a drain is also a big NO, as it could clog up drains!

travel box for kitten

Some people set up their own DIY travel litter boxes using things like cardboard boxes or plastic containers from the hardware store.

Personally, I’m on the team of buying a real portable litter box that’s ergonomic and convenient. Cardboard can leak, and you’ll likely dispose of a plastic bin used as a litter box.

How do you travel with a cat litter box?

Purchase a reusable or disposable litter box. For safety, always supervise your cat when she’s using a travel litter box. You can use the same kitty litter you use at home.

What can I use for a traveling litter box?

For best results, purchase a litter box that’s meant for travel. Many products are designed for portability and easy cleaning. If you’re in a pinch, everything from a cardboard box to a plastic container can work.

Are there travel litter boxes?

Yes, many brands offer litter boxes for use while traveling, While some have open tops, others zip up to allow you to transport litter easily without the need to empty the box between uses.

Have you ever traveled with your cat? It can be an enjoyable experience but comes with some unique challenges, particularly in the litter box area. Getting a cat to go potty on the go can be a challenge and, in some cases, become a complete catastrophe. Unlike dogs, cats rarely want to go potty on demand on a leash. They want time to get comfortable, space, and a place to bury their waste when they need to go.

Enter the portable cat potty, a wonderful invention that helps cats care for their litter business when not at home. Finding the best travel litter box for cats depends on your kitty’s specific needs and your travel situation.

They come in a few different styles, including biodegradable and disposable. These products can be true lifesavers when owners and cats are on the move. From taking a trip to moving across the country, planning ahead for your cat’s potty needs is necessary.

Not all travel litter boxes are the same, so consider your cat’s needs beforehand. Is this going in a travel crate, the car, or in a hotel room? Will your kitty use the potty for a short stay or a more extended period of time? Let’s take a look at features to consider and our picks for some of the best travel litter boxes for cats.

5 Things To Look For In A Travel Litter Box

There are a few things you should consider when selecting a travel litter pan for your cat.

  • Design – Are you looking for a flat, open-air design, or does your cat prefer a covered box?
  • Materials – Traditional cat boxes are often made from plastic, as are some portable ones. Disposable boxes are often made from cardboard, and some resemble an open cardboard box. Not every kitty likes cardboard or cloth-based boxes, so this is something to consider when making your pick.
  • Mode of travel and lodging – How you’re traveling will also determine what type of pan will work best for your kitty. For example, if you’re traveling in the car, a stationary option that you can keep filled with litter or even let your cat use in the car is a top choice. A disposable cardboard kitty pan may be a good fit for hotel rooms or an Airbnb for a few days.
  • Length of use – Length of use is a consideration. Be sure the portable potty you pick is durable enough to last the length of your trip.
  • Size – Be sure to pick a box that’s the right size for your kitty to use comfortably. You don’t want them to develop an aversion to the litter pan and avoid using it, start spraying , or otherwise interfere with normal bathroom habits .

Below, we review some of the best travel litter boxes for cats. We cover different designs, so you can find one that works perfectly for your pet and specific trip plans.

Petsfit Upgrade Travel Portable Cat Litter Box Review

Petsfit Upgrade Travel Portable Cat Litter Box

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Easy to grip handle
  • Flat box with cover
  • Contains the mess and odor
  • Best for small and medium-sized cats
  • Leakproof design, with a  double waterproof bottom

Petsfit makes one of the best litter boxes for traveling with cats. The Petsfit box is leakproof and lightweight. The pan is also foldable and takes up little room for easy storage. There are several features we like about this one. For starters, it’s leakproof, and the inner fabric is waterproof. This version comes with a flat potty pan and top cover.

The top cover has a convenient and easy-to-use handle. Your cat can have a covered potty for privacy, and you can contain the mess within, or if preferred, they can use the open-air flat pan style. This option from Petsfit is perfect for short-term and long-term excursions. We especially like this for the car, as it contains the mess and has a spot to store the scooper. If using this for a longer-term situation, such as an extended trip or move, you can add a disposable inner liner to make this an even more effective option.

We love that this design is so versatile and has a double waterproof lining on the bottom. It’s easy to take apart, wash, and pack up flat, taking up little room when empty. This works best with small and medium-sized felines.

Best Travel Cat Litter Box With Lid

Even if your cat usually uses an open-air bathroom, a portable kitty pan with a lid is a smart choice for when you’re on an adventure. The lid contains the potty mess and odor.

PetSafe Disposable Cat Litter Box Review

PetSafe Disposable Cat Litter Box

  • Covered design for privacy
  • Cardboard based box
  • Folds down for easy portability
  • Comes with a bag of PetSafe Crystal Litter
  • Top odor control
  • Elevated entrance to reduce tracking

PetSafe makes a cardboard-based collapsible travel kitty box designed for odor control . The design with an enclosure includes a full bag of PetSafe crystal litter, which offers up to five times better odor control over traditional clay. It’s also less messy than conventional clay options. One of the features we like about this one is that owners can set the litter up, allow their cat to use it, clean it up, and then fold it down without removing the litter.

This PetSafe disposable litter box has a wax coating inside to help prevent leaking and comes with eight disposable scoops for easy and convenient cleaning . Simply scoop the poop, and then toss everything. The covered potty gives cats privacy and has an elevated entrance to reduce tracking. This option is perfect for hotel rooms and small spaces.

We love that this litter box is easy to assemble and clean. We also appreciate that it comes with odor-reducing crystals. However, substituting your own might be better for kitties who are picky about their litter or not used to the crystal kind. Switching litters on the go can sometimes stress your cat out even more.

Best Disposable Travel Litter Box

A disposable kitty potty can be a perfect fit for both long and short trips. These are great for short-term stays because they are highly effective yet inexpensive enough that owners can fill one up for the night and toss it away in the morning without feeling too wasteful. For longer stretches, disposable boxes can last up to several weeks and offer very easy cleanup.

Kitty's Wonderbox Review

Kitty's Wonderbox litter box

  • 100% biodegradable
  • No harsh chemicals
  • Made from recycled paper
  • Durable and tearproof
  • Lasts up to 4 weeks
  • Can use with any type of litter

Kitty’s Wonderbox is a top pick for a disposable kitty potty. It can be used alone or as a liner. It’s made from recycled paper and is durable, leakproof, and tearproof. The eco-friendly option is designed to last up to four weeks and works with any kind of litter.

The Wonderbox has top odor control without any harsh chemicals or disinfectants . It’s 100% biodegradable, so owners can feel better about using it for a short time and throwing it away. Just like any other kitty potty, this one needs daily cleaning.

We love the eco-friendly materials and natural odor control of the Wonderbox. It’s an excellent pick for a few days at a motel or a few weeks in a new home.

Best Portable Litter Box With Tray

Having a tray to help keep your portable kitty potty clean is a wonderful way to contain the mess and keep that kitty stink from ruining your trip.

Kitty Sift Disposable Cat Litter Box Review

Kitty Sift disposable litter box

  • Made from 100 recycled, plastic-free cardboard
  • Durable and water resistant
  • Disposable and compostable
  • Lasts between 2 and 5 weeks
  • Optional litter sifting kit for easy cleanup
  • Works best with clumping litter

The disposable kitty toilet by Kitty Soft is sustainable and made from 100% post-consumer use, plastic-free, recycled cardboard material. The material is durable and water-resistant. It’s also designed to reduce buildup in the pan and helps neutralize the ammonia smell from urine. The potty pan is disposable and compostable, depending on the requirements in your area. Owners can pick between just the basic pan and adding the sifting kit. It also works as a liner for standard kitty boxes.

The Kitty Sift Disposable box can last between two and five weeks. Of course, it needs regular cleaning, and longevity depends on your cat’s potty habits. It may not last as long if you have multiple kitties using the same pan. Kitty Sift works best with clumping litter. The Kitty Sift is very economical and comes with six in a pack. It’s a perfect pick for travel, as well as a temporary box while you get settled in a new house.

We love that this is disposable and sustainable, leaving little waste behind. It lasts for a reasonable amount of time and is very economical. For us, the better option is to go with the sifter set, as it makes cleaning the pan much easier.

Best Collapsible Travel Litter Box

A collapsible bathroom box is a compromise between a disposable option and the traditional kitty pan. These are a good option if your kitty gets anxious or refuses to go in a cardboard pan.

BNOSDM Collapsible Litter Box Review

BNOSDM Collapsible Litter Box

  • Collapsible for easy use and storage
  • Easy for cats to get into and out of
  • Sturdier for longer-term use
  • Good for small cats and kittens
  • Pedal helps prevent tracking
  • Flexible use

The BNOSDM collapsible kitty tray is designed for traveling and folds up to save space when not in use. It’s a shallow box with an open design. It’s very easy to get in and out of, making it perfect for kittens and senior cats. The collapsable design allows for more flexibility, making entering and exiting easier for felines who may have a physical ailment, are in pain, or are experiencing digestive distress.

The box is a good-sized pan, with a pedal at the entrance and exit to help keep the mess in the pan. This style gives kitties that traditional litter-pan feel in an easy-to-use portable option. It is best for indoor use and smaller kitties between about one and 10 lbs. There is a larger size available, as well as three color choices.

We love the foldable design and versatility that this portable kitty pan offers. Though it does require more cleaning and washing out than disposable options, many cats are uncomfortable using cardboard boxes and may prefer the sturdier design of this one. Additionally, the sturdier material makes this an excellent option for longer-term use.

Other Top Picks For Portable Cat Litter Boxes

Below are a few more top picks for litter boxes for traveling with cats. Just remember that what is right for your cat depends on your mode of transportation, your pet’s comfort level, and how long you will be traveling.

Iris USA Canvas Travel Liter Box Review

Iris USA Canvas Travel Liter Box

  • Lightweight, round design
  • Canvas material
  • PVC-coated interior
  • Good for non-clay litters
  • Easy to use
  • Zippered to keep contained

This simple design of the travel potty by Iris USA is lightweight and easy to use. We like this one as it’s not made from plastic or cardboard. The Iris option is made of durable canvas. It features a zipper and circular design and is perfect for smaller felines. The interior of the kitty pan has a PVC coating to help prevent leaks.

The zipper top allows for easy storage when the pan is not in use. The canvas option works great with corn- and pine-based litters but may not be a top pick for clay-based options. Clay-based litter can become clumpy, hard, and stick to things, and it may be a big mess to use on the go.

We love the simple, circular design of this one and that it’s easy to use and store. This is the perfect pick for one cat on a short trip or as a backup for kittens.

HiCaptain Large Travel Litter Box Review

HiCaptain Large Travel Litter Box

  • Good for car travel
  • Larger size for multiple cats
  • Folds up small for easy storage
  • Waterproof interior liner
  • Multiple sizes
  • Firm siding to help cats feel secure

HiCaptain is a top pick for large or multiple cats when traveling. It features a zippered lid, which keeps the odor, stains, and mess in the box. It’s an excellent pick for car travel. The Hi Captain option has firm paneling on the side, which makes kitties feel secure. When not in use, it can be folded down small to fit in a suitcase.

HiCaptain’s product has a waterproof liner, though use with a bag liner is recommended. You can use it inside, outside, and on the move. It’s perfect for the back of the car, inside the RV, or even in a tent.

We love that this is so easy to use and that it comes in a larger size. As an owner of larger cats, I can say this is a big draw. There is nothing worse than trying to get a larger-bodied kitty to pee in a tray that is just too small.

Don’t Forget Liners

While portable potty boxes are often leakproof or water-resistant, using a liner is the only way to ensure no leakage. Along with that, liners make cleanup when traveling a lot more practical. Just line the box, let your kitty go, grab the liner, and toss the whole mess out.

PETOCAT Litter Box Liners Review

PETOCAT litter box liners

  • Drawstring liner
  • Eco-friendly
  • Perfume-free
  • Can hold up to 20 pounds
  • Fits most litter boxes

PETOCAT liners are a top pick. They are easy to use and have a drawstring , which can make all the difference when containing a stinky mess. The PETOCAT liners are eco-friendly, heavy-duty, and waterproof. They are also scratch and tear-resistant, making them perfect for travel.

We love that these liners are perfume-free and very durable. They can hold up to 20 pounds and fit most litter boxes.

5 Tips For Traveling With Your Cat

Traveling with a cat is no small undertaking. However, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Preparing yourself and your pet with the right tools is a huge help.

  • A cat carrier is a must if you are taking your fur baby with you anywhere. From a quick trip to the vet to a weeks-long road trip, a sturdy, breathable cat carrier keeps your pet safe. A carrier with more than one opening is helpful—either a top and front opening or a front and back. Be sure the carrier is cozy and roomy enough that your pet can turn around. A soft blanket on the bottom is a good idea.
  • Many cats prefer to have a blanket or cover on their carrier or crate when moving, as it calms them down and reduces the stress of the unknown.
  • Before using a portable potty during travel, allow your kitty to have a chance to try it out. Giving them the chance to use it a few times will reduce the uncertainty when in a new place.
  • Try to stick with the same litter your cat is familiar with. Familiarity will reduce a cat’s stress and uncertainty with using the bathroom when traveling.
  • Familiar bedding, food, treats, and toys are also helpful in keeping kitties comfortable away from home.

Keep in mind that traveling is a very stressful situation for your kitty. They may feel anxious, scared , or simply out of sorts. In some cases, cats may be more clingy or standoffish than normal. Try to provide them with some consistency by using the same food and bathroom supplies they are used to.

Worried About Traveling With An Anxious Cat?

It’s normal for cats to be anxious or scared when traveling. They have no understanding of why their surroundings and circumstances have changed. If you know your cat has trouble traveling, you can discuss a sedative with your veterinarian first. Pheromones, as well as CBD treats or oil , may also be helpful to make traveling a more enjoyable experience for your pet.

Can You Put a Litter Box in a Cat Carrier?

This list contains several cat carriers that come with litter boxes; some are designed to fit inside while others are designed to be used alongside the carrier. In either case, can you (or should you) put a litter box in a cat carrier?

You can put a litter box in a cat carrier if it comfortably fits along with your cat. A traditional litter box is not going to comfortably fit in any traditional cat carrier, so be sure to buy a smaller travel litter box and a larger cat carrier.

That being said, you may not have to travel with your cat’s litter box in their crate with them. If you’re traveling with your cat for less than 2-4 hours, you may not need a travel litter box at all. Assuming your cat is healthy, they should be able to wait that long before using the litter box.

If you think your cat may need to use the litter box more frequently than you’ll be able to stop, consider getting a cat carrier with a travel litter box that fits inside. Still, be sure to give your cat breaks from their carrier as often as possible.

How To Travel With a Cat Litter Box

If you’re getting ready to travel with your cat over a long distance, you may be traveling with a litter box as well. Here are a few things you can do to make the trip easier:

1. Choose a travel litter box .

The litter box you use at home is likely too big to fit in your car comfortably, so be sure to buy a travel litter box. These are typically much smaller and collapsible for easy travel.

Some cat carriers (like the ones above) come with their own travel litter box that either fits inside the carrier itself or folds for portability.

2. Make sure the litter box is secure in the car .

Once you have your travel litter box, secure it in the car for travel. If it will have loose litter in it during the trip, you don’t want it dumped all over the back floorboard.

You can secure a travel litter box into a cat carrier, cover it and secure it in another section of your car, or fold it down while empty and store it in an easy-to-access place in the car for your next stop.

3. Bring extra litter, bags, and a scoop .

Be sure to bring everything you’ll need for your cat’s trip including extra litter for the travel litter box, plastic bags to clean it out with (we use recycled grocery store bags), and a scoop that can be kept in an easily cleaned space during the trip.

Whether your cat’s litter box is in their carrier or you plan on letting them use it when you stop driving, you’ll want to have everything you’ll need to keep it clean and securely stored during the trip. That being said, you may even want to bring emergency cleaning supplies for the car just in case.

Methodology

While I was researching the best cat carriers with litter boxes, I did the same things I would do before making a purchase for my own cats. I read customer reviews, I looked at the manufacturer, retailer, and price of the cat carrier, and above all, I considered the comfort and safety of the cat and the driver.

Here are the main factors I considered while choosing the best cat carriers with litter box sets:

  • Size . Each of the cat carriers on this list is at least 15″ x 11.4″ x 17.7″ to ensure enough room for cats to be comfortable.
  • Travel Litter Box. Each of the cat carriers on this list either comes with a travel litter box that fits inside the carrier, comes with a travel litter box that collapses for portability, or is large enough to fit a travel litter box along with your cat.
  • Safety.  Each of the cat carriers on this list is made from durable materials with proper ventilation. I also considered additional safety features including secure fasteners, included leashes, space to attach a leash, seatbelt loops, and any other car-specific features for travel.
  • Comfort.  In addition to proper size and ventilation, I also looked to see if the cat carriers included interior mats for your cat’s comfort. For the driver, I considered the space available in the car and easy visibility so that you can check on your cat throughout the trip.
  • Customer Satisfaction.  Before I make any purchase, I always take the time to read customer reviews and consider the overall product rating. For each cat carrier litter box combo on this list, I checked to make sure that customer reviews are overall positive and that each one had an average rating of at least 4/5 stars. That helped me to understand how accurate the cat carrier description was as well as the reliability of the seller.

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of cat carriers and travel litter boxes available now, and finding the best one can be time-consuming and expensive. However, it’s important to make sure you’re getting what you and your cat need for any travel.

If you’re looking for a large cat carrier that comes with a travel litter box to fit inside during the drive, I recommend the Necoichi Portable Stress Free Carrier . If you’re looking to maximize space in your car for a move, the Kitty Obsession All-in-One Cat Carrier offers a perfect balance of comfort and compactness.

No matter which cat carrier and litter box you choose, be sure to give your cat plenty of time to get used to them before the trip. Whether you’re moving across the country or visiting a friend , buy your cat carrier early and plan for litter box breaks during the journey. Finally, don’t forget to bring or buy additional travel accessories such as a litter box scoop, plastic bags, extra litter, and emergency cleaning supplies.

Buyer’s Guide

Travel Cat Litter Boxes are meant to allow your feline to travel with you while not compromising on her comfort and habit of using her litter box. There are various types of travel kitty litter boxes available, big, small, covered, non-covered, as well as boxes made of fabric or disposable paper.

We help you with the basic types of travel boxes available as well a few features to consider in order to choose the best travel litter box for your kitty.

Why Do You Need Travel Cat Litter Boxes?

Travel Cat Litter Boxes are compact, portable, and easy to carry which provides a toilet space for your cat while you both are traveling or out of the home.

Travel Cat Litter Boxes

These can be carried along with when going for a trek, a long walk, or a drive in the car or simply while travelling. These travel cat litter boxes offer a unique and compact design which are easy to carry and comfortable for your cat.

Cats are used to urinating and defecating in enclosed spaces as they need enough privacy in order to carry out their business. Moreover, if your cat is habituated to using a litter box at home, she may find it difficult to pee or poop anywhere else.

Post shedding, cats are used to hiding their poop by digging into the litter and require enough comfort and privacy while doing so.

As cat owners, we are responsible to give them the best level of comfort, and Travel cat litter boxes help us achieve the same. These are not as big as typical litter boxes used at home but serve the purpose well.

Types of Travel Cat Litter Boxes

There are various types of travel cat litter boxes available based on their shape, size, design, etc. Generally, travel cat litter boxes can be classified into two types:

Fabric Based Collapsible Litter Box

Collapsible litter boxes are usually made of heavy-duty Oxford Cloth Fabric and can be collapsed and stored by folding. This can be placed anywhere in the car, cat carrier, with your luggage, inside your bag, etc.

Fabric Based Collapsible Travel Cat Litter Box

There are multiple design variants available, some of them being open or closed and may or may not have a cover. Certain travel kitty litter boxes have a zippered fabric cover that can be zipped when your cat using it.

It is preferable to choose a fabric-based collapsible litter box that offers a closed design so that your cat can carry out her shedding business anywhere with optimum privacy. These are quite good for multipurpose use as it can also be used as a portable cat bed.

The advantages of using Fabric Based Collapsible Litter Box are:

  • Can withstand weather conditions when used outdoors
  • Possess a sturdy base and covered design for privacy while shedding
  • Have a good capacity to accommodate your cat and the litter
  • Mesh design offers suitable ventilation and helps in eliminating odor

The disadvantages of using Fabric Based Collapsible Litter Box are:

  • The box can be too flimsy for heavy cats
  • If your cat is picky, she may refuse to use the box
  • Your cat can tear and bite into the cloth fabric if it is not strong and durable
  • Needs to be cleaned regularly

Disposable Travel Litter Box

Disposable travel litter boxes on the other hand are made of ‘use and throw’ materials which are best suited for single-time use. These are made of cardboard or hard paper and are foldable and easy to store.

Disposable Travel Cat Litter Box

If disposable litter boxes belong to good quality, they can be folded and reused again. Since they are mostly made of paper, they are also biodegradable and easy to dispose of but they are not long-lasting.

They are best for trekking trips or for frequent travel trips with your kitty as they do not offer the hassles of cleaning and refolding each time your cat uses the box.

The advantages of using Disposable Travel Litter Boxes are:

  • Single use and throw
  • Easy to use and store
  • Lightweight and extremely portable
  • Biodegradable and no hassles of cleaning

The disadvantages of using Disposable Travel Litter Boxes are:

  • Too tiny for large-sized cats
  • Cannot withstand extreme weather conditions
  • Flimsy and non-durable construction

How to Choose The Best Travel Cat Litter Boxes?

Here are the steps you must consider in order to choose the best travel cat litter boxes for cats:

Size is one of the most primary features to consider before getting a travel cat litter box. The size and dimensions of the box have to be larger than your cat’s adult size in order to accommodate her comfortably inside the box.

Ideally, it is recommended that your cat’s litter box should be 1.5 to 1.7 times her size for it to be spacious. You cannot expect a portable cat litter box to be as big as a standard litter box.

However, the box should be comfortable for your cat to use and you can buy an oversized version of the litter box if your feline prefers using a large litter box in general.

There are two basic types of travel cat litter boxes: collapsible and disposable. While collapsible is usually made of fabric, the disposable type is made of cardboard or hard paper.

You can choose the type of travel cat litter box based on your purpose of travel. If you would be staying put at a particular place for a few days or are going to a location for a long holiday, you can consider using the collapsible travel kitty litter box.

Collapsible type may require some initial setup and assembly and hence is suitable for long travels where it is convenient to clean and replace the litter at times. However, each time you may have to replace the litter which can be a hassle unless the box is zippered and helps in containing the litter inside.

Disposable litter boxes, on the other hand, require zero maintenance and are meant for one-time use and throw. These are foldable, provide a hassle-free assembly, and are made of lightweight materials like cardboard or hard paper.

If you are constantly on the move or out for a road trip with your kitty and do not find a corner spot for her litter box, a disposable litter box is the best choice for you.

The material of the box depends upon the type of travel litter box used. Collapsible travel litter boxes that are meant for reuse are usually made of Oxford Cloth Fabric which is heavy, thick, and durable.

This makes it waterproof, tearproof, and strong to withstand outdoor environmental conditions. Lighter the fabric, flimsier is the collapsible portable litter box.

Disposable boxes, on the other hand, are made of cardboard or hard paper which are biodegradable, light in weight, and easy to throw after use. The lightweight material makes it portable and easy to carry. Just place it anywhere in your car or with your luggage and you are your kitty are good to go.

However, disposable litter boxes do not possess a large capacity and cannot hold a sufficient amount of heavy litter.

Weight Capacity

The travel kitty litter box should be able to carry or hold your pet’s weight quite easily. In ideal terms, it should exceed the weight of your pet to be able to withstand slight activity like digging or moving inside the box.

It should also be able to hold a sufficient amount of litter. Choose a lightweight litter for travel litter boxes as they can get heavy with your cat’s weight and all the dirt enclosed within the box.

Choosing a particular type of travel litter box also depends upon the kind and purpose of the trip. If you would be staying somewhere for a longer time, you can consider getting a collapsible fabric travel cat litter box.

These fabric litter boxes fit well into air carriers and can be cleaned often. They usually also have waterproof liners on the insides to give protection against your cat urinating on the walls.

However, for long road trips or quick emergencies along the way, you can always keep a disposable litter box handy which is easy to use and throw and meant for one-time use.

Portability

Travel kitty litter boxes should be easy to lift and carry around which makes it portable and easy to shift or move. The collapsible boxes usually come with a handle which makes it convenient to carry while your cat is busy using it inside.

Moreover, when it comes to storing these boxes, they are easy to fold and very compact. This makes it easy to fit and carry inside your travel bag, pouch, your car, etc. Better the portability, more the convenience of traveling with the box.

While paper litter boxes are meant for single time use and throw, they automatically get ruled out when it comes to long-lasting use.

Talk about fabric litter boxes being durable, they should be made of Oxford Material Fabric that is thick, strong, and waterproof. This makes it durable and the waterproof design keeps the box from getting wet due to cat urine and dirt.

Ease of Use

The litter box should not only be comfortable for your cat but also easy for you to use and clean. The design should be such that you can access your cat easily when she is inside the box.

The car travel cat litter box should be foldable with easy storage function . Moreover, it should be made of quick-dry fabric to soak up urine and not allow a dirty smell to linger around the box.

Multipurpose Box

It is best if the travel litter box can also be used as a portable cat carrier. This makes it suitable as an all in one home for your feline while traveling.

Just make sure to clean it every time after she uses the box for urinating and defecating so that it does not stink and provides her a clean environment to stay and sleep.

How do you travel with a cat litter box?

Carry a portable travel litter box along with you and a sufficient amount of litter in ziplock bags. Make sure to carry some amount of litter from her box used at home for your cat to recognize the smell. Find a suitable spot to place the portable litter box and pour a sufficient amount of litter for your cat to use it.

How to dispose of travel cat litter boxes?

There are disposable litter types of travel cat litter boxes available which are made of cardboard or hard paper. Once your cat is done using the box, you can simply fold the paper with the dirty litter inside it and dispose it of in a trash bin.

Are travel litter boxes suitable for airplanes?

Yes! There are air carriers available that help in accommodating your kitty’s litter box. These can be carried inside airplanes or can also be used at the airport. There are various travel litter boxes available that are carrier friendly and made to fit inside them perfectly.

What Is a Travel Litter Box?

Cat in a travel case going on a trip

Cat travel litter boxes are usually smaller and more lightweight than the ones you use at home. They’re designed to be easy enough to transport so that you can bring them along on your road trip, vacations, or air travel. If you’re taking your cat on a long trip, you’ll need to think about how and where they’ll be able to go to the bathroom—and bringing along a travel litter box for cats, plus some cat litter, can help keep things as familiar and stress-free for your cat as possible.

“If your cat is going to be traveling with you for more than a few hours, it’s a good idea to have a litter tray available to them,” says LeeAnna Buis, certified feline training and behavior consultant from Feline Behavior Solutions . “While cats can ‘hold it’ for quite a while, it’s not necessarily healthy or comfortable and can add stress to what may already be a stressful situation.”

Types of Travel Cat Litter Boxes

You’ll find a few different types of portable litter boxes available, with the main types being:

  • Foldable fabric litter boxes
  • Disposable travel litter boxes
  • Cat travel carriers with a litter box

The type you choose will depend on your needs, and you might find that you’ll want different types of portable litter boxes for different types of trips. We’ll take a closer look at what to consider when choosing which travel litter box will suit your cat in our Buyer’s Guide, but for now, let’s move on to our favorite options.

Portable Cat Litter Box: Buyer’s Guide

Cat traveling at an airport

Once you’re starting to plan your trip, you’ll want to choose the right kind of travel kitty litter box to suit your requirements. Here’s a little more detail about the types of travel litter boxes you’ll find.

Foldable Fabric Litter Box

These boxes fold down into a small size and can then ‘pop-up’ when you need them. Sometimes they come with a lid so you can zip the litter inside the box for mess-free transport. They’re washable and usually have a waterproof lining.

Disposable Travel Litter Box

Designed for occasional use, disposable cat litter boxes are usually made from cardboard which may be coated with a waterproof coating. After a few uses, you can throw the box away and start using a fresh one. Some disposable boxes have a lid which may suit some cats better than an open box.

Cat Travel Carrier With Litter Boxes

Some cats will prefer the security of a covered portable litter box, in which case a carrier that incorporates a litter box could be your best bet. These are also more secure as you can keep your cat contained within the carrier while you are on the move.

What to Consider When Shopping for a Travel Litter Box

When you are researching different portable cat litter boxes, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are some things to consider before making a purchase.

Determine how you’ll use the box. Different types of travel litter boxes may not be ideal for all situations. If you are going for a quick day trip or a short drive, a disposable box may be the quickest, cheapest, and easiest option. But if you are flying or going on a longer trip, investing in a more sustainable option or a cat carrier that also comes with a travel litter box is likely a better choice.

Take measurements and consider the size. If you have a large cat breed, make sure to double check the measurements of a travel litter box to ensure your cat will be comfortable using it. Measurements will also help determine if the box will fit in your luggage or easily in storage in your cat or an overhead compartment.

Check cleaning instructions. Before buying, make sure the travel litter box you want is easy to clean. Many portable cat litter boxes can be cleaned using soap and water.

Traveling With a Litter Box: Tips and Advice

Girl traveling with her cat

Before you leave on your trip, consider how and when you’re going to give your cat access to their litter box. “If you’re traveling in a vehicle, stop every so often and give your cat a chance to use the litter box while the car isn’t moving,” says LeAnn Buis. “All that jostling about may deter them from using their box.”

You’ll probably want to offer your cat the chance to use their litter box every 4 hours or so, although Buis also says not to be surprised if your cat won’t use the litter tray—especially if they are anxious. “It’s common for cats to go many hours without eliminating if they’re stressed out,” she says. “You may have better luck when you settle into a hotel for the night, once they’ve had a chance to calm down.”

Make sure you clean out your cat’s litter box as often as possible. If you’re on a long trip, you may decide to bring two washable litter boxes so there’s always one ready for use while the other dries. Using a litter box liner is another option, which means you shouldn’t need to wash out the box. If you’re using a disposable box you can simply put it in the garbage before you leave and use another fresh one at your next stop. Remember to bring enough cat litter, or make sure you can buy some along the way.

If you’re letting your cat out of their carrier to use their litter box and you’re not somewhere secure like a hotel room, make sure your cat is wearing a harness and a leash. You can also consider purchasing a carrier that’s large enough to slot a litter tray inside, for some extra security.

With a little forward planning, traveling with your cat can be a lot of fun. Choosing a travel litter box ahead of time means you’ll both be prepared when it’s time for those inevitable bathroom breaks!

Best Travel Litter Box: 4 Options Your Cat Will Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: February 16, 2024

Traveling with your furry feline can either be a walk in the park, or a living nightmare. Compared to man’s other best friend (the dog), cats are pretty nervous when it comes to traveling outside of their familiar environment, so a travel litter box can be a great idea.

Cats love to know their environment. For that reason, they may seem out of sorts when they’re not in a familiar space, and so they are not usually thought of as good travelers, especially when it comes to bathroom routines.

As cat owners, the last thing we want to do is stress out our kitties. Most of us think primarily about acquiring a good cat carrier, especially if your travel involves mainly short car trips. For long hauls, however, the best way of avoiding unnecessary stress is to ensure your furry friend has a safe space to excrete.

Here’s your complete guide to travel litter boxes, including how to use them and which one to choose.

4 Best Travel Litter Box For Cats

Every kitty is unique in its own way. Depending on your cat’s personality , they may take a liking to new environments or journeying in the car. How you raise your cat plays a large role in this.

In other cases, the car and new surroundings can be quite daunting. To make life easier for your kitty, you’ll need to consider a few factors. How much privacy does your cat need? How long will you be traveling with your cat? How fussy is your kitty?

Side note: Remember to practice safety first when driving. If your cat is fussy and hyperactive within the car, make sure it does not unnecessarily distract the driver.

Below are four fantastic travel litter box options for cat friends:

1. Nature’s Miracle Disposable Cat Litter Box

The first litter box to make my list is designed for short stays and a hassle-free traveling experience. Nature’s Miracle litter box allows your feline friend to go when needed.

What to Expect?

  • An affordable alternative to portable litter boxes
  • Regular and jumbo-size litter boxes to suit all cat sizes
  • Protection against foul odors
  • Convenient to dispose of

Not only is this a hygienic option, but it’s also environmentally friendly. The box is made from recycled material and is landfill safe. Despite this, it’s still shred- and leakproof. Materials include baking soda, which plays an active role in fighting odor. Odors that neither you nor your cat enjoys.

Each pack comes with two or three boxes, making it an ideal option for use on road trips or weekend stays – although they can last up to 5 weeks. Overall it’s an affordable option and can be used for a variety of litter types and cats of all ages.

On a side note, these may also be a particularly practical option as a cat litter box for car travel, as they are easily disposable.

One minor thing to note is that it’s not the greatest option for shy kitties who like their privacy. With no roof, your cat might not enjoy feeling exposed.

Cat owners who are regularly on the move will benefit from this collapsible, portable litter box for cats that includes a travel-sized water bowl – also collapsible. Should Cats Travel With You?

It’s worth asking this question. Cats aren’t known for their traveling desires, in fact, many cats seem to detest leaving their home territory. But you get a few (especially those who are exposed to travel from young) who are perfectly fine being nomads.

Even so, you may have no choice but to travel with your cat — if you’re moving or can’t leave them alone for long hours. For any time you have your cat outside of its typical home, a travel-friendly litter box is a wise investment.

Whichever the case, items like cat boxes and litter boxes are essential when it comes to preparation. In fact, the preparation itself is truly the key to managing travel with a cat.

So, should a cat travel with you? It definitely can, provided you prepare well. That includes planning the stops and noting whether they are cat friendly. Staying with sympathetic cat venues really can make a huge difference to your travel experience.

The Importance of a Travel Litter Box

We live in a time where travel is the most accessible it’s ever been. Many people travel as a whole family, including their furry family members.

Cats are very susceptible to change, and any change may even affect how often your cat pees . You may have noticed that when you’re traveling, your kitty doesn’t use the litter box as often as they do at home. This isn’t necessarily a cause for panic.

man cuddling cat in airport

But that also doesn’t mean you should be paying less attention to litter box care; you’re still responsible for scooping out the litter daily, regardless of whether you have a portable litter box or not. Odor, filth, and mold aren’t going to cut it when it comes to providing a comfortable ablution spot.

We love our cats, and we want them to feel secure with us on their new adventure. And part of a successful traveling trip with your cat involves the perfect litter box for travel. By the way, that litter box shouldn’t be too different from the regular litter box, including the litter.

You may also notice that you cat won’t actually be comfortable unless your car is stopped. Keep this in mind when you plan your breaks, especially if your cat is prone to bolting. If your cat is travelling inside a cat box, for example, try to strategize the safest way for kitty to feel relaxed enough to go.

Who Needs a Travel Litter Box?

First-time cat travelers may find travel litter boxes a mystery. What if it’s only a short vacation? Won’t a garden be just fine? How often will my kitty need to go?

Regardless of these questions, a travel litter box is generally needed for all kinds of globetrotting adventures if you travel at all regularly. While cats are known to be highly self-sufficient, their bodies still work like every other animal. Meaning: a travel box is probably needed whenever you are traveling with your cat.

Here are some basic guidelines you may want to follow. Bear in mind that every cat is different, and in all cases, it is better to err on the side of caution and safety.

  • Generally, a journey of eight hours or less might be ok in terms of not needing a litter box (more on that below). That said, some cats do need to go more often than others.
  • It’s a good idea to restrict your cat’s eating before a journey. About four hours prior should be the last time it feeds.
  • Make sure the litter box is secure, or stable, within the car. Chances are you won’t want to “walk” your cat on stop breaks. You don’t want litter spilling all over the car, either.

A Quick Note on Travel Precautions and Health Alerts

If you plan to travel with a cat, pay closer attention to its habits just before you travel. It’s good advice in general but it applies especially when road trips are imminent. Sometimes, your cat will stop its normal functions due to stress or other factors like an infection.

If your cat has stopped urinating for more than 24 hours, it’s considered a veterinary emergency. Consult a vet immediately to seek treatment. In this regard, it’s a good idea to make a note of any vets in your intended destination or near any stops on your journey ahead of time.

As cat owners, it’s up to us to use our discretion to understand how our cats are dealing with travel, particularly if they are on lengthy trips. Some owners have taken to using calming diffusers and comfort sprays   in the cat box or vehicle.

cat with head out car window

When to Use a Travel Litter Box

If you plan on traveling for under eight hours, your cat will most likely be able to manage the journey without needing to urinate or excrete. While on a road trip , most cats choose not to eat or drink on the road, which means less food and water will affect their tummies.

Road Travel (Car)

In the best-case scenario, your cat may simply prefer to go to sleep while in transit. It’s not particularly likely, but we can wish.

A litter box may then be used as soon as you’ve arrived at your destination. Find one place you know your cat will love and keep the box there, making sure you let your little friend know where it is.

If you’ve done your homework and know beforehand what spaces and facilities are available at your stop, this should be stress-free on your part, at least.

cat on green litter box and wooden floor

There are some potentially better options when it comes to using a portable litter box for air travel. A litter box may, in fact, be impractical in this case.

When it comes to flying, pee pads work to eliminate the need for urinary breaks – they absorb urine and prevent odor build-up. A double-layer works excellently when cats have no choice but to excrete in their travel cage.

Final Thoughts on Cat Travel Litter Box Options

Leaving behind your kitty for a day out in the woods, a camping trip near the river, or a weekend in a bustling city might be stressful for many cat owners. Others want to include kitty in their magical adventure. Perhaps some owners have to move and don’t have a choice when it comes to traveling with their furry feline.

black cat in pink litter box

Either way, a travel litter box is an essential part of traveling with your kitty. When doing so, remember that no one likes a dirty and smelly toilet, and that includes your cat. It will be essential to keep the travel litter box clean and smelling fresh, just as it would at home.

More than that, remember that your cat is not likely to enjoy change as much as a dog would. While dogs may have an easy time going to the bathroom wherever they are, cats value their privacy. Also, some cats might only be used to using a litter box and won’t understand the concept of doing their business outdoors.

The best advice is to find a portable litter box that’s comfortable for your feline, easy to set up, and perhaps disposable for your convenience.

Take that into account when considering the four amazing options presented here, and you’re on your way to finding out how your cat does with travel. You’ll be having more happy adventures together in no time.

A group of cats in litter boxes

Cats can be pretty type-A when it comes to where they do the do .

Oftentimes, not just any litter box will actually do. Especially when you consider the fact that you’re going to be the one to clean it, hide it, and generally deal with it, too, deciding on the best litter box becomes a bigger task than we may have the time or patience to deal with. Factor in all the thousands of options out there, and you’ve potentially got some decision paralysis on your hands.

My cat (Louie) and I live in a tiny Brooklyn apartment, so positioning a litter box so it’s both accessible to him and out of sight for me has been somewhat of a struggle. I’ve put many to the test, as have my colleagues living in the city with cats, and we’ve been able to narrow down the best of the best when it comes to form and function.

We also connected with Dr. Anna Kaufman from Bond Vet in New York City to chat about litter box materials, maintenance, and recommendations.

Check out our FAQs below and read on to discover the 10 best litter boxes, from self-cleaning to stainless steel, expert-recommended and real cat-tested.

Best overall : Frisco Multi-Function Covered Cat Litter Box

Best budget : van ness high sides cat litter pan, best splurge : litter-robot 4 automatic self-cleaning cat litter box, best top-entry : iris usa large round top entry cat litter box, best for kittens : frisco senior and kitten cat litter box, best for large cats: frisco high sided cat litter box, extra large, best litter box furniture : frisco decorative bench cat litter box cover, best disposable : frisco high-sided disposable cat litter box, how we tested.

When it comes to putting a litter box to the test, it’s 50% about your cat’s reaction to it and 50% about how easy it is for you to clean and position. In testing those we tried, we considered the following criteria:

  • User experience: Is it easy for your cat to use and get in and out of? Do they fit fully in the box in order to prevent messes? Does your cat use the bathroom outside of the box (a telltale sign that they don’t enjoy the litter box experience)?
  • Maintenance: How easy is it to clean? Does used litter stick to the box? Does it absorb or repel odors?
  • Longevity: How long does it last in between cleanings? How well does it withstand time and repeated cleanings? Does it emit odor over time?

Each litter box was tested for at least a month, unless of course our kitty cats refused to use them properly (in which case, you won’t be seeing them on this list).

These disposable litter boxes are great for when I travel with my cat. They’re super convenient and eliminate the hassle of cleaning a traditional litter box on the go. I always keep a few on hand for emergencies.

Where in my home should I place my litter box?

“I would place the litter box inside, on the ground in as private of an area as possible,” Dr. Kaufman recommended. “You want to make sure it is an area that you are able to keep clean but that your cat feels comfortable using no matter what.”

How many litter boxes do I need?

“The general rule for litter boxes is the amount of cats in the household plus one,” said Dr. Kaufman. “For example, if you live in a two-cat household, the recommendation is three litter boxes. This can be overwhelming for people, so I generally say if you can add one more that is great!”

Are there any special considerations for older cats or cats with mobility issues when choosing a litter box?

Dr. Kaufman “recommend[s] a litter box that is easy to get in and out of. As our feline patients age, it can be harder to get in and out of the litter box.” This could mean a litter box with a ledge or a step or one with a low-rise opening — none of those top-entry litter boxes or ones with high sides all around.

Traveling with cats can be scary and quite overwhelming, especially if you get to your destination only to find that you can’t find a cat-friendly hotel anywhere on your route. Fortunately, certain branches of the Hilton Hotel franchise allow cats to stay.

While not all Hilton Hotels are pet friendly, quite a few locations owned by the company let guests bring pets. More specifically, an impressive 5,512 properties in the brand allow cats, so you should easily be able to find one in your area. In this guide, we examine the Hilton Hotels that allow cats and provide travel tips for staying in one of these hotels with your feline companion, so read on!

  • Which Hilton Hotels Allow Cats?

Hilton’s pet-friendly hotels are in partnership with Mars Petcare, the largest pet care company in the world, and these hotels are also located worldwide. Here are the hotels that you can visit with your feline:

  • Canopy by Hilton
  • Hampton by Hilton
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton
  • Hilton Garden Inn
  • Tru by Hilton
  • Home2 Suites by Hilton
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton

  • What Is the Hilton Hotel Pet Policy?

The pet policies for the participating Hilton locations vary by individual hotel. Usually, it charges on a per-stay basis. The pet size, the number of pets allowed, weight limit, and type of pets are determined by each property, so make sure to research the hotel’s regulations before making a reservation.

  • What Exactly Does Pet-Friendly Mean in Hotels?

Pet-friendly hotels generally allow certain types of pets in their rooms and on the property. Things to remember when booking a cat-friendly hotel are as follows.

  • Most hotels that allow pets charge a fee. It’s usually a flat rate but can be increased by the number of pets you have and the days you plan to stay.
  • Not all pet-friendly hotels allow all pets. Many only allow dogs, and some of those also have size and breed restrictions in place.
  • Pets aren’t allowed to be left alone in most hotels.

Each hotel in a pet-friendly brand will have its own policies, rules, and regulations regarding pets, so make sure you check them completely before booking a room.

  • What to Do When You Get to the Hotel With Your Cat

Now that you’ve booked a hotel room at one of the pet-friendly Hilton locations, you need to know what to do when you get there.

According to the hotel’s policies, you may need to produce a form that states that your cat is healthy and has had all of their shots. Once you have your key, you can head up to your room and get your furry friend settled in.

  • Top 5 Tips for Staying in a Hotel With a Cat

Cats don’t like change, and even though Hilton Hotels are nice, that won’t matter to your feline companion. Here are a few tips and best safe practices to get you through your stay with your feline in tow.

  • 1. Inspect the Room

Many cat owners have a reputation for letting their cats destroy a hotel room and leaving it a mess. You don’t want to be accused of this or let your cat into a hotel room where they could become injured.

Before you let your cat out of the carrier, check for broken tiles, holes in the walls or cabinets, and open windows. You’ll want to look for anything that could cause your cat to become injured. Report anything you find to the front desk so it can be fixed and you can’t be charged for it after you check out.

You can also ask for items you’re worried that your cat will destroy to be moved out of the room, just to be on the safe side.

  • 2. Work to Keep Your Kitty Safe

Glance under the beds to make sure there are no cords your feline could chew on or any medications that might have been dropped that your cat could eat, and remove them. Use your luggage, purse, extra pillows, and whatever works to block anywhere a cat could climb into and get stuck.

  • 3. Make the Hotel Room Feel Like Home

You want the room to feel like home for your cat as soon as possible, for your and the cat’s sanity. Set up a disposable litter box with a pee pad under it to protect the carpeting, and dispose of the whole thing when you’re ready to check out.

Set up food and water bowls with another pee pad or a place mat under them so no food or water gets on the floor. It’s also a good idea to bring a cat sisal scratcher so your cat will be less apt to claw beds, carpets, or other furniture in the room.

Set all these items in an area where your cat can easily reach them and be comfortable.

  • 4. Hang the Do Not Disturb Sign

The last thing you want is for housekeeping to show up to clean your room when you’ve stepped out for a second and for your cat to dart outside and become lost . Hang the “do not disturb” sign on the doorknob, and then let the hotel staff know when it’s safe to come in and clean.

  • 5. Don’t Leave a Mess Behind

When you go to checkout, make sure that everything is as clean as possible. Throw away your disposable litter box , pee pads, and anything else you’ve used for your cat that can be disposed of. You can always carry a little dustbuster to vacuum up anything your cat has left behind.

Try to make the room as clean as if a cat hadn’t been staying there, and the housekeeping staff will thank you and love to see you and your feline come back again.

  • Final Thoughts

Traveling with your feline friend can seem like a nightmare, but visiting one of the many Hilton Hotel properties that allow cats will make your life easier. Remember that each hotel that accepts pets has different pet policies, so you need to check the regulations carefully before booking a room.

Follow these tips for helping your cat settle in, and ensure that you protect the furnishings, carpeting, and walls in the room to avoid additional fees. Also, cleaning your room before you checkout is best so it will be easier on the housekeeping staff. It’ll make you feel good, and the employees will certainly appreciate the gesture.

How to protect your pet during an in-flight emergency

Dogs and cats are not covered by standard safety rules on a plane.

travel box for kitten

A recent spate of in-flight emergencies — severe turbulence , a burning plane , a blown-out door panel — has underscored the importance of aviation safety protocols. The measures are clear, comprehensive and potentially lifesaving if you’re a human.

But the protocols are murkier for cabin pets and service animals.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s rules cover lifesaving gear and procedures designed for people, including seat belts, oxygen masks and life vests. During an emergency evacuation, flight attendants order passengers to leave all hand baggage behind; there is no asterisk for carriers containing pets.

Passengers with cabin pets or service animals hope to never find themselves in such a dire situation. Even so, Deborah Mandell , a professor of clinical emergency and critical care at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, encourages travelers to have a plan of action.

“Being prepared and thinking about all these things is really important,” said Mandell, who is also an American Red Cross pet care adviser.

Secure your pet during turbulence

Airlines require cabin pets to remain in their kennels at all times, though some carriers, such as Delta, allow passengers to hold their enclosed pet on their lap when the plane is not taking off, taxiing or landing. If the air turns choppy, owners should tuck the kennel under their seat — the safest spot for the animal and, by extension, any nearby passengers.

Liz Rozanski , a critical care veterinarian at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, recommends traveling with a hard-shell pet case rather than a soft-sided bag. “The stiffer ones are more like a child’s seat,” she said. A hard case can also better repel rolling objects, such as water bottles.

Inside the enclosure, soft bedding will provide protective padding. Mandell suggests removing any objects that could turn into projectiles, such as toys or food.

The rules are different for service dogs, which are allowed to sit in the open, by their owner’s feet or on their lap. If you have a carrier, place your service dog inside as soon as the pilot switches on the seat-belt sign. If you don’t have one, Mandell said, seat the dog on the floor, cradle it between your legs, and wrap your arms around its chest in a safe and comforting hug, “as long as you’re not putting yourself at risk.”

Use a spare oxygen mask

Each airplane seat is equipped with an oxygen mask, plus extras intended for lap babies. Airlines do not specify whether passengers can use a spare mask for their pet, but it has happened before. In 2018, JetBlue flight attendants deployed an oxygen mask to help a French bulldog named Darcy that was struggling to breathe.

Similar to the rule for adults traveling with children, passengers should put on their mask first, then help their pet. Keep in mind that masking an animal may require some finessing, because the gear is not made for canine or feline faces. Mandell said the equipment might be a trickier fit for larger breeds, such as a German shepherd or Great Pyrenees.

“ Because of all the different conformations of dog heads, it may or may not stay on with just the elastic,” she said. “So you may just have to hold it.”

Based on her experience in animal hospitals, Mandell said some pets might object to having their snouts covered with a foreign object. The owner needs to position the cup so that the pet can inhale the oxygen. Don’t press it too tightly against their nose, which can impede their intake.

If a spare mask is not available, the passenger and pet would need to share. Rozanski said to trade off air every 15 seconds or so.

BYO life vest

By law, planes flying over or near large bodies of water must carry life vests for each passenger, including a few models for infants. Pets are not part of that equation, but Mandell said you can bring your own pet life jacket.

The gear might make sense if your trip includes family swims in the vacation rental pool or boat rides in the Pacific Ocean. It’s probably excessive if you’re carrying it solely for the plane ride. Fortunately, emergency water landings by commercial aircraft are very rare.

Evacuating with your pet

In the event of an evacuation, flight crew members will instruct passengers to proceed to the emergency exits and leave all carry-on items behind. Passengers must be able to deplane within 90 seconds, according to the FAA. Searching for or shouldering a bag can slow the process; luggage can also puncture the inflatable slide.

Pet carriers, which are considered carry-ons, are no exception.

Airlines such as Southwest say passengers should remove the dog or cat from its case and hold it in their arms. (Flight attendants will provide real-time guidance, since each crisis is unique.) Animal experts, however, said a freed pet comes with risks. The pet can become spooked and escape in the plane, for example, or its claws can pierce the slide.

Rozanski suggests exiting with the pet inside its carrier and dealing with the consequences later. “ If the plane is burning up, I would take the carrier with me,” she said. “If somebody says no, I would jump anyway.” Just be aware that ignoring or defying a flight attendant’s orders could be classified as unruly behavior.

For sliding down with a larger dog, Mandell said, try to hold the animal on your lap facing out, with its back to your chest and its feet up. That way, its nails won’t rip the material.

Service animals, meanwhile, are trained for emergency situations, Rozanski noted, citing the guide dogs that led their owners out of the World Trade Center to safety on Sept. 11, 2001.

Service dogs “are not going to have a problem,” she said, “because they are going to follow instructions.”
