1 Day Litchfield National Park Tour from Darwin Itinerary

Discover the beauty and abundance of wildlife in Northern Australia with our Litchfield Day Tour. Throughout the day you’ll get to explore a whole host of different landscapes, from dense bush to low valleys, and incredible swimming spots , all whilst learning about the history and culture of Litchfield National Park . Our itinerary is jam-packed full of outdoor adventures and there’s plenty of wildlife encounters to be had.

We start the day by heading to the Adelaide River , where you’ll have the option to get up close and personal with saltwater crocodiles on a Jumping Crocodile Cruise . Cruise around observing the local crocs in their natural habitat and be amazed at their strength and size when they jump out of the water for a meaty snack. Alternatively, we’ll head to the Fogg Dam Conservation Centre where we can view a range of native wildlife that call the wetlands home. After making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity we’ll dive straight into the beautiful scenery of the Litchfield National Park.

On the way, we’ll stop to check out the fascinating Cathedral Termite Mounds . These incredible feats of nature are unique to Northern Australia, and the termites that reside in them are some of the longest living insects on the entire planet. Seeing the 100-year-old structures with your own eyes is a mesmerising experience, and our local guide will impart knowledge and histories of these weird and wonderful creatures. The mighty towers provide a cool home for termites and great photo opportunities for us!

Once we’ve arrived in Litchfield, you’ll have the chance to cool off at one of the area’s famous plunge pools, Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls , the perfect place to catch your breath and chill out with new-found friends. Enveloped by the lush green canopy of tall trees, you can splash around at the base of the waterfall and soak up the natural scenery.

From there we’ll take a picturesque stroll through the jaw-dropping landscapes of Litchfield, past soaring cliff-faces, alongside green-carpeted valleys, and to the incredible lookout point over Tolmer Falls or Florence Falls . To get there, we’ll take a short bushwalk set against the soundtrack of chirping, colourful birds.

After a jam-packed day filled with lush landscapes and a whole host of Australian Wildlife, we’ll head back to Darwin before the sun sets.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the Top End, the tour itinerary is flexible and may not be exactly as described here. Your guide will take into account a range of factors including weather conditions, water levels and road access to plan a tour that will offer you the best experience in the area. However, some locations may be inaccessible when you travel due to circumstances beyond our control.

Our commitment

At Autopia Tours, we actively promote the protection of flora and fauna on our Darwin Top End Tours. It is our duty to ensure there is minimal disturbance to this World  Heritage Listed region and the species that call it home. Cultural sensitivity and respect for the traditional owners should also be shown at all times.

Part of our responsibility is educating guests on minimal impact practices and the importance of ensuring the safety of wildlife and the environmental sustainability of the destinations we visit.

Learn more about EcoTourism: https://www.ecotourism.org.au/

Traditional Owners

Autopia Tours would like to begin by paying our respects to the traditional owners of this country, with specific acknowledgement to the Wurundjeri people. Please be conscious and respectful of the sensitivities of indigenous culture and the spiritual connection they have with the land at all times.

Wildlife Encounters

The natural behaviours of wildlife are to be respected and not interfered with. When viewing wildlife, people should take care to avoid rapid or sudden movements, which could frighten the animal, and should keep noise to a minimum and refrain from touching, petting or feeding all wildlife including birds. Contact with people can introduce diseases to wildlife and can cause them to become aggressive.

Wildlife should not be handled or fed, unless by certified wildlife handlers. Feeding wildlife can alter their natural foraging behaviour and can lead to disease or illness through contact with people and the introduction of foods that are harmful to their digestive system. Feeding wildlife can also cause them to become aggressive toward people.

Wildlife that appears to be in distress, injured or in danger should be reported immediately to the appropriate authority, such as your Guide/Tour Leader, a National Park Ranger or Visitor Centre Staff.

Protecting our National Parks

People should remain on designated walking tracks, behind safety barriers/fences and follow all directions given by the guide/tour leader. Venturing off these can alter fragile ecosystems and can harm wildlife shelters and native vegetation. There are other dangers to be aware of too, such as cliff edges, unstable rock formations, overhanging tree branches and slippery ground cover. Remaining on tracks ensures safe visitation for guests and the environment.

No flora or fauna should be removed from their natural setting. This includes dead wood, fallen leaves, flowers and so forth, as they form part of the ecosystem of the region and their removal could cause a disturbance.

Waste Management

All buses are fitted with waste bins. No organic waste should be disposed of onto the ground. Although organic, items such as banana peels, apple cores, bread and other food scraps, are not natural/native to the region and can introduce pest species, diseases or harm to wildlife if found and eaten. We recommend all passengers bring a water bottle with you on our Grampians Tour. Purchasing bottled water contributes large amounts of plastic into the landfill. Therefore, we ask guests to bring their own bottle, as there is access to water refill stations available on our vehicles. Please ensure you stay hydrated throughout the tour to reduce the risk of sun exposure and dehydration.

All our guides carry a current Level 2 First Aid certificate. Please report any accident or illness to your tour guide. We recommend anyone with an existing medical condition to carry their medication with them on tour and to notify their tour guide at the beginning of the tour.

If you are a smoker! We ask you to refrain from smoking whilst in the company of other passengers and limit it to designated smoking areas. Smoking is not permitted on any of our vehicles, or in any type of accommodation including permanent campsites. We make frequent ‘comfort stops’ to allow free time for guests but cannot guaranteed smoke breaks. Please ensure you dispose of your cigarette butt responsibly and appropriately.

Great trip with Danny. The waterholes are definitely worth visiting. If your interested in aboriginal culture Danny has a wealth of knowledge as she lives and works on the land. Thanks danny throughly enjoyed the Litchfield day tour and Kakadu tours with you.

darwin to litchfield tours

I would highly recommend this tour. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Darwin. Swimming in beautiful natural waterholes & waterfalls in Litchfield National Park was a bucket list experience for me. Danny our tour guide had so much local knowledge to share about the area. She did everything she could to make sure we enjoyed our experience.

darwin to litchfield tours

Had a spectacular day in Litchfield National Park today. Our tour guide was Adrienne and she was so informative and knowledgeable about the flora, fauna and indigenous culture of the area. Loved the termite mounds and the rock pools. Highlight was Wangi Waterfalls. I could not recommend this more highly. Exhausted by the end of the day but good tired!

darwin to litchfield tours

Loved this tour. I would highly recommend and was definitly one of the highlights of our short trip to Darwin. Swimming in natural waterholes in Litchfield National Park was amazing. Emily was our tour guide. Although only new to the area/tours you would have never known as she was very knowledgeable, was passionate about the area and informative. Emily did everything to make use comfortable and ensure we enjoyed our Litchfield experience. Would definilty recommend this tour and guide.

darwin to litchfield tours

Whilst we were very happy with our knowledgeable tour guide Emily, we were disappointed with this tour.I would estimate that we spent in excess of 7 hours driving and only 3 hours for pit stops and seeing the items of interest. The bus suspension was very uncomfortable for such a long days driving Fogg dam had nothing to show us except the lotus Lillies, we would have preferred to miss Fogg altogether and spend longer at the swimming spots . The small group was nice , probably due to it being the end of the season though.

Great tour with guide Beks. The wet season (Feb) group was small. Beks was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife. There were many good stops so we were never in the bus for too long. The bus could have been more comfortable, though.

We did the tour on 9 February. Our guide was Becs. She was fantastic – very knowledgeable, personable and extremely obliging. Couldn’t have been happier with her. The trip was interesting, we were lucky to be able to swim in a pool and the Wangi waterfall in particular was amazing.

I did this tour with a group of five ( me included). I simply loved it! I felt good from the start. Our tour guide Tim was a wonderful host and knew a lot of extremely interesting stories. Together with Naomi he gave us a fantastic time. We stopped at three waterfalls, took a bathe in natural pools, started in the morning with the jumping crocs (who wanted to) and enjoyed the landscape of Litchfield. It was never boring the whole day and time flew. In the evening it felt as if we were all friends and I was sorry to say good bye. Hope to see them again!!

Litchfield Tours

Litchfield National Park is located just an hour’s drive from Darwin and is often described as the Northern Territories best kept secret. It is home to an abundance of beautiful waterholes and waterfalls where you can swim to your heart’s content.

Best of Litchfield National Park

The stunning Wangi and Florence Falls are the best known and most popular attractions within the park and are not to be missed on your adventure to Litchfield. This region of Australia is a little slice of heaven and a must visit when visiting the Northern Territory.

Not only is Litchfield home to an array of magnificent swimming locations, it also known for a number of other reasons. They include the giant termite mounds that can be found up to 2 metres tall, the Lost City, a collection of strange rock formations created through years of erosion, and of course awe-inspiring scenery as far as the eye can see.

Best Litchfield Day Tours from Darwin

The 1 Day Litchfield and Jumping Croc Cruise is an absolute adventure of a lifetime and leaves everyone who joins in awe of the natural scenery and infamous wildlife. You will witness the raw power of the largest reptiles in the world, as crocodiles jump out of the water to feast on the snack of the day- meat on a stick! You will be amazed at the size and strength of these crocodiles, being very careful to keep your hands inside the boat… After witnessing these mighty beasts in their natural habitat, it’s then on to a snake handling show, where you can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most notorious creatures. The afternoon will be spent with a picnic lunch before heading deeper into the national park to swim in cascading waterfalls and crystal-clear freshwater holes.

The 1 Day Litchfield Safari is the perfect day trip from Darwin if you are short on time but still wish to see as much as possible. On your adventure you will see the famous Magnetic and Cathedral Termite Mounds, explore the beautiful waterfalls, spring-fed streams, and the rugged sandstone escarpments of Litchfield National Park. Spend the day swimming, hiking and admiring the unique landscapes before a BBQ lunch and a visit to the waterfalls of Buley Rockhole.

Litchfield Multi-day Trips

Combine your trip to Litchfield National Park with an exploration of Kakadu on a multi-day tour from Darwin. This area of Australia is truly magical and the best way to see it is by jumping on a fully guided tour with comfortable 4WD vehicles, real Aussie sleeping arrangements (pop up tents) and a friendly, informative guide. Spend your days exploring Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, where you will view the massive termite mounds, swim in the pristine streams and waterfalls, check out the local Aboriginal rock art and so much more. The 3 Day 2 Night Kakadu and Litchfield Buffalo 4 Wheel Drive Tour runs from May to October due to it only being fully accessible during the dry season.

For the adventurous traveller who wishes to see everything and more, join the 5 day 4-night Top End and Arnhem land Adventure tour ! You will visit Kakadu, Litchfield, and Nitmiluk National Parks, all of which are full of unbelievable waterfalls, natural landmarks, and impressive gorges. You will visit Arnhem Land, a largely untouched and remote area, and one of Australia’s hidden gems. Not only will this experience open your eyes to the beautiful and intriguing way of life that has existed for thousands of years, you will make unforgettable memories and see a unique part of the world, that most others won’t.

Things to do in Darwin …

Time away from your busy schedule. All the way to the Northern Territory. You may not be back. What to do in Darwin to make the most of your trip? Imagine hearing the stories of local Indigenous people. Imagine being transformed by what you hear. Take the opportunity. Aboriginal people have lived here for a thousand generations. We bring country to life with knowledge, fun and laughter. One of the most rewarding things to do in Darwin. Direct from your hotel. Seats on our Darwin tours are strictly limited. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable experience.

Expect the unexpected!

Our Darwin tours are not for everyone. For visitors wishing to be passively entertained, with a structured itinerary that ticks off the pretty places in the allotted time, there are many tours available. Our tours are not like that. Our tours are intimate, interactive and in the moment. They get under the skin of the place. They are about Aboriginal stories and sacred places, bush foods and managing country. They operate on ‘Aboriginal time’. They depend on guests’ interests and input, and what’s around at the time. They sometimes include family, which is our Aboriginal way. Our tours may challenge your values. They may change the way you see things. They are honest and genuine.

3 Day Kakadu & Litchfield Tour Itinerary

Get to know the Top End with our 3-day Outback 4WD adventure through Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks. We’ll explore the top waterfalls and swimming holes in the area, spot wildlife, learn more about the Aboriginal culture and spend the night camping under the incredible starry night sky.

Day One (lunch and dinner) The day starts early as we depart from Darwin, ready for our Top End adventure. Our first stop is the Mary River Wetlands Cruise, where you can observe the local wildlife in their natural habitat. The area is known for crocodiles, buffalo and around 250 species of bird, so see what you can spot as you cruise down the river.

Back on land, we enter Kakadu National Park and stop for lunch at a picturesque spot on the South Alligator River. We then journey deeper into the park to arrive at Ubirr Rock, an important Aboriginal rock art site. Here your guide will interpret the ancient paintings and tell the stories of the Dreamtime. While we are here, we take the opportunity to admire the spectacular views from the Nadab Lookout, over the vast floodplains below and all the way into Arnhem Land. We set up camp at our private campsite nearby, where we enjoy dinner and relax in the peaceful natural surrounds.

Day Two (breakfast, lunch and dinner) As you awake to the sounds of the bush, get ready for a day of adventure through Kakadu National Park. We make the journey to our first stop for the day, Twin Falls, going off-road before taking a boat shuttle and short hike to reach the tranquil swimming spot. In the afternoon, we travel to Jim Jim Falls, where we do another short hike to the waterhole. Relax on the large boulders, swim in the refreshing clear water or chill out on the small sandy beach. Then it’s time to say goodbye to Kakadu as we travel to Litchfield National Park, where we set up camp for the night.

Day Three (breakfast and lunch) We spend our final day discovering the stunning waterholes and rugged landscapes of Litchfield National Park. Hike the bush tracks around Florence and Wangi Falls or take a refreshing dip in the clear waters of the swimming holes. Explore the multiple cascades and rock pools of Buley Holes before we stop to admire the weird and wonderful termite mounds. In the evening, it’s time to head back to Darwin.

A tour with Ethical Adventures is one that will stay with you long after it’s over. My 2 day/1 night Litchfield trip was fantastic! Rob is knowledgeable and passionate about the NT - we went to the most stunning locations for walking and swimming and our overnight camp - he guided us to places away from crowds so we often had swimming holes to ourselves! The food was great and we enjoyed banter a plenty! Rob’s passion for the environment and the ethics behind travel are second to none. This is the kind of travel operator that will ensure the longevity and sustainability of the ‘WOW moments’ we all seek as a traveler. Via Google
Amazing 2 day experience in Litchfield. Everything is fully catered for all you have to do is turn up and enjoy the experience. Rob has so much knowledge of the area, carefully plans each hike, lagoon swim around what will give you the best experience. For me that meant I got to see the beautiful natural areas without the crowds. I highly recommend for anyone wanting to explore the natural wonders of Litchfield. Source - Trip Advisor

Brilliant small group tour. Picked up out front off accommodation on time. Our guide Rick was funny, friendly and provided enough informative commentary without too much excess chatter. Sites included were fantastic, and tips on the waterfalls were spot on. Lunch was adequte in amount and lovely and fresh. The highlight was the Adelaide River tour. About Litchfield Park Tours

Litchfield national park.

Litchfield Park Tours Logo

Crystal-clear swimming holes and pleasant bushwalking trails make Litchfield National Park a favourite among Darwin locals. Located just an hour-and-a-half drive south, 100 kilometers southwest of Darwin, the park features diverse environments from rugged sandstone escarpments to perennial spring-fed streams, monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, waterfalls and historic ruins.

Visitors to Litchfield Park will find several short trails that pass through a range of habitats and landscapes that are typical of the Top End. For the experienced, fit and well prepared bushwalkers, the multi-day Tabletop Track circuit offers the opportunity to experience the isolation of the Top End.

One of Litchfield National Park's most famous and unique sights is the hundreds of magnetic termite mounds standing up to two metres high. The mounds’ thin edges point north-south minimising their exposure to the sun, keeping the mounds cool for the termites inside.

Litchfield features walkways and information centres at each major point of interest throughout the park. A Ranger Station is located at Batchelor and Walker Creek. Most areas have an Emergency Call Device, toilet facilities and disabled access.

You can spend as little as one day in the park, taking a quick dip in each of the plunge pools and rockholes on the drive through, but to really experience the true beauty of Litchfield it’s best to stay at least two days.

Seasonal Considerations Water levels in Litchfield National Park can vary depending on the season and rainfall. During the wet season (November to April), the area may be subject to flooding and potential closures. Before planning a visit, it's best to check the latest conditions with the park authorities.

From cradling baby crocs to exploring via campervan: why travellers are choosing this australian hotspot, experience the thrill of close encounters with wildlife and camping under starlit skies at world heritage-listed national parks in the northern territory, which offers one-of-a-kind experiences for all ages.

darwin to litchfield tours

For journalist Amrita Kaur, it was the stunning natural attractions – rugged scenery, dramatic gorges, waterfalls and expansive desert landscapes – that drew her to this region of Australia.

For environmental health and safety consultant How Kah Kuan and his young son, Jian Kai, a campervan road trip sounded like a special way to bond during the school holidays.

As for communications manager Iris Lim, the search for a quieter holiday destination led her to Darwin, the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, where she was charmed by vibrant street art and later with beautiful sunsets at the iconic Uluru (Ayers Rock).

darwin to litchfield tours

As first-timers to the Northern Territory, each on their own unique journey, these Singaporean travellers were united with a shared sense of awe at the region’s beauty and iconic locales. Ahead, they share their insights and recommendations for an unforgettable holiday in this uppermost region of Australia.

A plethora of stays to choose from

There are plenty of accommodation options in the Northern Territory, ranging from safari camps, caravan parks, glamping tents and bed-and-breakfasts to eco-luxe lodges and wilderness resorts.

Ms Lim had a one-of-a-kind experience camping under the stars at Uluru, where she slept outdoors in a swag (fancy sleeping bag). Families or bigger groups can consider renting a campervan like Mr How, who drove from Darwin to Litchfield and Kakadu during his trip in 2018.

He found that a campervan was quite convenient to travel around in as there are many holiday parks around the region. Each holiday or caravan park has a different type of campsite with essential facilities. Depending on your budget, you can opt for a non-powered site or a powered site with attached bathrooms and showers. Mr How chose to stay in Batchelor Holiday Park’s ensuite powered site, and Pine Creek Railway Resort, which offers furnished cabins.

For those who prefer more creature comforts, make like Ms Amrita who stayed at Cicada Lodge, a comfortable sanctuary surrounded by ancient sandstone cliffs and the majestic Katherine Gorge; as well as Finniss River Lodge, a luxury accommodation situated on a 50,000-acre working cattle ranch.

“There are only six luxury suites at the Finniss River Lodge, so it felt really exclusive,” says Ms Amrita.

darwin to litchfield tours

Where untouched wilderness meets ancient wonders

Nature lovers are in for a treat at Australia’s Top End – the northernmost section of the country – which boasts unique landscapes and natural beauty like no other. Must-visit places include Litchfield National Park, Kakadu National Park and Nitmiluk National Park .

After the 1.5-hour drive from Darwin to Litchfield National Park, the first thing Mr How and his son did was to take a dip in Litchfield’s famous Florence Falls, where water cascades into a plunge pool, surrounded by lush monsoon forest.

The pair also embarked on the Yellow Water Cruise at the Kakadu wetland, which is home to hundreds of birds and animal species, such as the saltwater crocodile . He recalls: “There was a spectacular sunset over the Yellow Water Billabong of Kakadu National Park and great natural rocky landscapes across the river. It was the first time my six-year-old had seen the natural world like this.”

Similarly held in awe was Ms Lim. Etched in her memory are the ancient rock art that she saw in Kakadu, Katherine, and Uluru, as well as “the changing colours of Uluru at sunrise and sunset.”

darwin to litchfield tours

Another opportunity to view ancient rock art is via a sunset dinner cruise. This was a highlight for Ms Amrita, who saw the magnificent Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park on the Nabilil Dreaming Sunset Dinner Tour, a cruise that includes a scenic walk and dinner.  The gorges carved their way through ancient sandstone cliffs over millions of years, creating a series of breathtaking rock formations. These form the backdrop to dinner, amid the setting sun.

Unexpected discoveries and things to do in the Top End

It was a trip of many firsts for Ms Amrita, who took her maiden helicopter ride over the floodplains of the Mary and Adelaide River regions, Daly River, and the lush nature reserves of Litchfield National Park. She also ventured to Sandy Creek, a serene, less-travelled waterfall area with minimal tourist presence.

darwin to litchfield tours

One of the most exhilarating experiences was spotting crocodiles in the wild, and then getting up close to them.

“During an airboat tour to watch crocodiles at Finniss River, I spotted at least six large crocodiles in just 30 minutes – some sunbathing, some lurking in the water, and others silently gliding through the swamp,” she recounts. “It was quite thrilling to watch them in such close proximity.”

She also visited Darwin’s Crocosaurus Cove, an indoor aquarium zoo that is home to the world’s largest display of Australian reptiles and the famous Cage of Death. Here, visitors can come face to face with saltwater crocodiles.

“I carried a two-year-old crocodile named Freddy, which weighed about 5kg. That was a highlight for me, too,” Ms Amrita adds.

darwin to litchfield tours

Besides nature and scenic activities, you can enrich your trip with cultural activities such as dot painting. These are typically led by Aboriginal artists who will share drawing techniques and explain what the different shapes and designs represent,  allowing guests to create their own artwork on canvas.

Ms Lim found this activity particularly therapeutic: “The experience left me feeling a sense of peace. As I thought through the designs, I could quietly reflect on my life and travel experiences. It was one of the most amazing experiences during my trip to the Northern Territory.”

Mr How and his son joined a Guluyambi Cultural Cruise along Kakadu’s scenic East Alligator River. There, they enjoyed a first-hand account of local Aboriginal culture , their way of life, and the use of plants and animals, as well as learning some bush survival skills.

Ms Amrita learnt more about Aboriginal culture from artist Manuel Pamkal. At The Top Didj Cultural Experience in Katherine town, Mr Pamkal, who has been painting for 45 years, welcomed guests by playing the didgeridoo, a wind instrument.

“Besides sharing his stories of living in the bush as a child, he also taught us how to make fire with sticks, as well as how to throw a spear with a woomera, a stick used by Aboriginal boys and men to propel spears with great force,” she recalls.

Travel tips for visiting Darwin and beyond

When travelling with kids, Mr How recommends preparing sufficient mosquito repellent and bringing along good sunscreen and hats for day hikes. “Be mindful of the heat and humidity even in the dry season, and drink plenty of water. If you are hiring a campervan and planning to do your own cooking, make sure you do your research on the various supermarket locations so that you can restock easily,” he says.

All three Singaporeans recommend taking local guided tours to take in all the beauty that the Northern Territory offers. Ms Lim says: “Local guides are knowledgeable about the region and able to share good insights for visitors to better appreciate the surroundings that you are visiting.”

Start planning your getaway to the Northern Territory , whether it’s for the perfect weekend or an extended escape.
