For more than 28 years local dolphins have become familiar with the sound of the Dolphin Queen and swim right up to our bow and play next to the boat, which is not the case with other tour boats. A TAMPA/ST PETE MUST!!!! From our extremely hospitable and knowledgable crew to the special precautions taken for Covid, this cruise was well worth the comparable price! The cruise was around 2 hours and we came across a few dolphins racing against the boat at the start of our journey, a pod towards the end, and periodic sightings sprinkled throughout. We also saw manatees, stingrays, fish, and the appropriately named bird island. Our captain grew up in the area and told us interesting stories about the surroundings as we got a little tour of the beautiful homes on the water. Our first mate recently graduated after studying marine biology and gave us information about the dolphins, their calves, and answered any questions we had! The boat was COMPLETELY disinfected and they do not pack it to the brim. In fact, my group was alone in the am tour with plenty of space around the boat to walk around. Ultimately, we will be back and totally recommend for others to enjoy this beautiful boating adventure.

Captain Christian is a 4th Generation St. Petersburg Native, and his parents are highly regarded for their 50+ years success in the yachting industry. As early as 8-years-old he began racing sailboats and has competed at the highest levels. While attending Old Dominion University he won a Collegiate National Sailing Championship. Throughout his teen years and early twenties Christian coached sailing and taught thousands of locals how to sail. Returning to the water after a successful career in medical sales Captain Christian is eager to contribute to St Petersburg, getting youth and others on the water. He brings a fresh outlook and energy with the commitment to provide an experience on the water which will be both entertaining and educational.

McKenzie Mungai

First Mate McKenzie comes to us with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Education & Conservation from Eckerd College in St. Pete. She will help develop the curriculum for our Eco Tours as well as expand the scope of dolphin education on our daily tours.

Captain Fred Debardelaben

Founded Pier Dolphin Cruises in 1992 and while cruising the waters of Tampa Bay he made friends with the pods of dolphins that follow the Dolphin Queen today. With his vast wisdom, Captain Fred will continue to help train new members of our team.

Wesley Obenshain

A fifth generation Obenshain First Mate Wesley has spent his life in and around the waters of Tampa Bay. From casting off the lines, helping to spot dolphins or serving you a beverage or snack, First Mate Wesley is onboard to make sure you fully enjoy your cruise.

Captain Mike Miller

Native to St. Petersburg Captain Mike spent 4 years in the US Navy as an Aviation Rescue Swimmer and finished his career in the US Coast Guard as a High Risk Training Instructor. Mike is an expert on local waters and a fantastic guide.

The  Sunny Sea is the newest addition to our fleet. It has just completed all of its coast guard requirements and is now ready to operate for our tours. It is a 45-ft pontoon boat that holds up to 39 passengers. 

The Prince of Tides is the latest addition to our fleet. Measuring 32 feet in length, This beautiful pontoon boat comfortably holds 24 passengers.

The Island Queen is 45 feet long, holds 40 passengers. She is powered by a 135 horsepower Perkins diesel engine.

The SS Pelican is a 16-passenger ex-navy motor whale boat that was on board a destroyer tender named the USS Yellowstone, and was later sold off after being decommissioned. She was mostly used to get sailors back and forth between ship and shore and a life boat. She is 26 feet long and is powered by a 60 horsepower Cummins diesel engine and has been restored to her original luster. 

All four  boats are Coast Guard inspected and approved annually.

The 24m Dolphin Queen offers amazing dive and snorkel trips to the Similan Islands, Bon & Tachai Islands, Surin Islands, and Richelieu Rock. Explore the Andaman Sea and the fantastic sites of the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, famous for Manta Rays, Koh Tachai, and the Surin Islands with the famous Richelieu Rock. Topside, the Dolphin Queen liveaboard has 3 decks and plenty of space for 18 guests onboard. The main deck has 2 double cabins, 3 twin cabins, and 1 quad cabin. Each of these cabins has AC and sea-view windows that open for safety and convenience, and the quad cabin has curtains around each bed for added privacy. The upper deck is home to 2 double cabins with sea views and individually controlled AC. Food onboard the Dolphin Queen is a mix of Thai and Western dishes, freshly prepared for every meal. Breakfast is made to order, and dietary requirements can be catered to with advance notice. Great week! The diving was for the most part was truly wonderful with Richelieu Rock being the star! We were lucky enough to dive on it four times with our last dive having the incredible experience of seeing a whale shark. We had a really great trip on the Dolphin Queen! For a budget trip it was wonderful. Recommended for The diving, the rooms, the bathrooms.

Best diving experience ever! The highlight of my trip was for sure our very last dive of the trip, which was at Richelieu Rock, where we got blessed with a whale shark and amazing visibility. The staff and food on the boat was great too. Amazing dishes every night and the sweetest staff you can imagine. Especially the leader of the company / boat, who is local young girl called “Joy”, and who was extraordinary sweet and inspiring to be on the boat with. :) Highly recommended tour. Recommended for Staff, food and the actual dives

The best experience I could have asked for The dives were really(!) good, beautiful sites, lots of life and coral, but most important, the guides and boat crew were very professional and made sure everything is safe and straight. But for me the best was staying on the boat, it was really cozy and comfortable , the atmosphere was very friendly and fun. Had so much fun hanging with the crew and other divers between and after the dives. Recommended for The best crew, amazing and safe dives, great food

Brilliant trip, nice boat, great guides Family run business where they really care for their customers. The office staff are friendly and very professional - they got us setup quickly and had a good selection of equipment. Rooms on the boat are small but have AC. We did the Similan Islands and Richelieu rock trip and it was epic - whale sharks, marble ray, turtles, octopus and masses for cool reef fish and amazing corals. Food is good and there’s cold beer. The dive groups are small - 4 divers with a DM - which is ideal. Overall a brilliant trip and highly recommend! Recommended for Diving Richelieu rock, cool corals, whale shark

MV Dolphin Queen is a hugely popular Similan liveaboard diving boat which can host up to 20 guests in air-conditioned comfort on 3 & 5 day/night cruises from Khao Lak. The boat is 24 metres long, and fully equipped with navigation, safety & communication equipment, as well as Nitrox.

There are three cabin types on Dolphin Queen, all of which have air conditioning and opening windows. On the main deck are twin-bunk cabins, two doubles, and two cabins that can take up to four guests. On the upper deck are two more double cabins which have doors that open out onto the deck. All cabins have individually-controlled air conditioners. Socializing and mealtimes take place at the back of the upper deck, in the covered open-air communal area. This is where the delicious meals are served (buffet style), and where most people on board spend non-diving time. There are also plenty of places to find some privacy and sunbathe and/or read a book.

Unlike some other Similan liveaboard diving boats which may be newer & more attractive, Dolphin Queen's qualities are a little deeper under its skin. The team are very experienced, and they know exactly how to run a safe, fun & enjoyable liveaboard cruise. We follow up every customer that we place on every boat, and Dolphin Queen always gets very good feedback. Little touches like open-heel booty fins as part of the free diving equipment and computers & instructors for more than just diving courses make a lot of difference. In general, from the delicious & abundant food to the service from dive staff and boat boys, liveaboard cruises on Dolphin Queen are wonderful. When you look at the prices compared to other boats, it's often a very simple choice.

Diving groups are made up of no more than four guests per Divemaster guide and there is a detailed briefing before each dive. At any time of day free tea, coffee, snacks, fruits etc. are available. There is a dinghy to return diving guests to the boat and to take you onto the wonderful beach at the Similan Islands.

Please note that divers on MV Dolphin Queen need to be certified to depths of 30m (99ft). Those who are not can choose between taking the PADI AOW course on board (which is great value includes a PADI instructor and use of a dive computer for the whole cruise), or doing the Adventure Deep dive at the start of the trip.

MV Dolphin Queen liveaboard guests should arrive for check in, final payment and equipment check at the PADI 5-star dive centre no later than 4pm on the day of departure, but they are welcome to visit on any day before. Dolphin Queen diving safaris in Thailand are for 3 days & nights (10 dives) or 5 days & nights (18 dives), leaving in the late afternoon on the first day and returning at about 2-4pm on the final day.

There is nearly always a videographer aboard, so you may want to see your video played on the tv.

There are normally four dives per day (3 day dives & 1 night or sunset dive). Except on the final day of the trip, when there are just two morning dives, before sailing back to the pier in Khao Lak.

The itineraries below are the most-common for each trip, but these can sometimes be changed for a number of reasons. Small changes are made due to weather & sea conditions, special marine life sightings, overcrowded dive sites, local-authorities' instructions, and the needs & requests of the paying guests. The safety & comfort of all guests is most important at all times.

Facilites, Layout and Specifications

There are several options for taking part in PADI diving courses aboard MV Dolphin Queen. The two most popular courses are Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Enriched Air, but there are several others available.

Advanced courses are very popular aboard liveaboard cruises and diving safaris. On Dolphin Queen, you get to complete all the dives with your instructor and also get the use of a dive computer for the duration of the cruise. 

Nitrox diving (Enriched Air) is one of the most-popular courses to take on a diving safari, mainly due to the opportunities to stay deeper safer for longer and to reduce tiredness. On Dolphin Queen you get four free tanks of Nitrox to practise what you have learned, and there are several options for further fills during the remainder of the trip.

Transfer details

Guests are expected to arrive at the PADI dive centre in good time for check in, paperwork checks, equipment fitting and final payment.

The dive centre is in the centre of Khao Lak, just 100 metres from the main intersection.

Free pick up from hotels and resorts in the area is available upon request.
