Binondo Food Trip 2024: BEST Restaurants and Food Stalls to Visit

Binondo is one of the best foodie destinations in Manila. Featuring hole-in-the-wall restaurants and unassuming food stalls, it’s a great destination for families and friends who want to taste authentic Chinese dishes.

I’d already been on a Binondo food trip twice and both times were great. This is something that I probably won’t get tired of, as it’s relatively cheap and there are always new dining options to find. My latest visit fell on a weekend, and admittedly, I was caught off-guard with the long queues everywhere! Nonetheless, it was a happy (tummy) experience.

Here’s our updated guide on the best restaurants and food spots for those doing a DIY food trip in Binondo.

Couple shot in Binondo Chinatown

Binondo is known as “ the oldest Chinatown in the world .” Its name is derived from the word “binundok”, which means low-lying hills.

It was established in the 1500s by the Spaniards as a settlement for the Catholic Chinese. It then grew as the center of trade in Manila. Today, it’s a cultural and foodie attraction with lots of restaurants serving affordable, delicious Filipino and Chinese delicacies such as dumplings, noodles, and rice meals.

Binondo is one of the spots in Manila for a food trip. Other places worth visiting include Maginhawa in Quezon City, Kapitolyo in Ortigas, and Poblacion in Makati.

Top-Rated Restaurants in Binondo

Whether it’s your first time in Binondo or here on a recurring visit, here are the tried-and-tested restaurants that you shouldn’t miss. We also included our opinions on those we’ve tried.

Note that operating hours may change without notice.

Group shot in Wai Ying Restaurant

One of the most beloved restaurants in Binondo serving authentic Cantonese cuisines, from dumplings to rice meals. They have generous servings and their rice dishes can be good for sharing!

We personally loved their beef noodle soup and their other rice meals were good too.

  • What to order : Dimsum, dumplings, roasted duck rice, lemon chicken rice, soy/asado chicken rice, congee, beef noodle soup
  • Open hours : 7AM to 10PM

Lan Zhou La Mien is famous for their hand-pulled noodle soups. You can even witness a live demonstration of how they make the noodles.

  • What to order : Beef lamien
  • Open hours : 10AM to 9PM

One of the top-rated restaurants in Binondo, Ying Ying Tea House offers affordable and delicious Chinese dishes such as congee, rice meals, dumplings, and noodles.

  • What to order : Dimsum (pork siomai, hakaw), chicken feet, yang chow fried rice, spare ribs tausi, and more

Sincerity’s pride is their fried chicken, but you can also order other Chinese food such as pancit, lumpiang shanghai, and more.

  • What to order : Fried chicken, oyster cake, kikiam
  • Open hours : 9AM to 7PM (up to 2PM only on Sundays)

Known as “The Fireman’s Coffee Shop,” this café donates their revenue to the Binondo Paco Fire Search and Rescue Brigade.

  • What to order : Soup #5, dumplings such as lava pao and xiao long bao
  • Open hours : 8AM to 9PM (opens early at 7AM on Sundays)

Food at Chuan Kee

In the same building as Cafe Mezzanine, you’ll find Chuan Kee Fast Food. Chuan Kee Fast Food is the oldest fastfood restaurant in Binondo . They are known for their kiampong, gokhong, maki, and lechon kawali, as well as other Chinoy favorites.

We liked their kiam pong rice and xiao long bao, but some of their main dishes (particularly the fried chicken and pork asado) were rather ordinary. However, overall their food is decent and reasonably priced. Serving time is fast as well, so it’s great for groups.

  • What to order : Kiampong, pork maki mi
  • Open hours : 9AM to 9PM (opens early at 7AM on Sundays)

Best Snacks and Pasalubong

Dong Bei Dumplings - kuchay

This store is known for their pork and kuchay dumplings. You can order them steamed or fried for take-out or buy frozen packs for pasalubong.

We’d been here twice, and I actually liked the dumplings better before. I found the wrapper too thick for my taste, but my companions were happy about the food, so judge it for yourself.

  • Open hours : 8:30AM to 7PM (closes early at 6PM on Sundays)

New Po Heng Lumpia House

Found along Carvajal Street, this nondescript food stall serves one of the best fresh lumpias (spring rolls) in Binondo, served with their own version of special sweet-spicy sauce.

This is one of my favorite food stops at Binondo as the quality of the food has remained the same over the years and the fresh lumpia is delish!

  • Open hours : 8:30M to 7PM (closes early at 6PM on Sundays)

Located along Ongpin Street, this food stall serves cheap and delicious fried siopao that you can eat or take home as pasalubong.

  • Open hours : 7AM to 6PM

Eng Bee Tin - mooncakes

A visit to Binondo won’t be complete without buying food pasalubong from Eng Bee Tin. It’s most famous for its hopia and tikoy. I also recommend buying a box of pineapple cake, which is super addicting.

There is more than one branch of Eng Bee Tin in Binondo. Its flagship store, which is located in Ongpin Street, is a 2-storey building where can buy goods and dine in. They have an in-house restaurant called Great Buddha Cafe , located at the 2nd floor.

In 2023, they also launched a food stall at their flagship store, called Binondo Bites , which sells fried xiao long bao. This is one of the trendy food at Binondo.

Established in 1966, this store serves different kinds of hopia (mung bean cake), as well as mooncakes, tikoy, and other delicacies.

  • Open hours : 8AM to 6PM (closes early at 5PM on Sundays)

This bakery is famous for their egg tarts, which are soft and creamy – perfect for those with a sweet tooth.

  • Open hours : 9AM to 7PM

Other restaurants to try

Here are other worthwhile Binondo restaurants you can visit:

Formery known as Quan Yin Chay, Vege Select is a highly rated restaurant serving vegan and vegetarian dishes. Recently, they have become popular for their sugar-coated strawberries and other fruits.

  • Open hours : 6AM to 8PM

This canteen-style fastfood serves affordable meals, though they are mostly known for exotic dishes such as frog legs.

  • What to order : Fried garlic frog legs
  • Open hours : 9:30AM to 7:30PM

Established in the 1960s, it is one of the oldest restaurants in Binondo. Masuki serves comfort food, including their bestseller mami noodles.

  • What to order : Beef mami

The easiest way to commute to Binondo is by the LRT Station. Get off at either Carriedo Station (Sta. Cruz Church) or D. Jose Station (Binondo Church). From there, it’s a few minutes walk to Binondo.

If you’re bringing a car, here are the parking spaces available:

  • Mall parking : For secure parking, head to Lucky Chinatown Mall (open from 10AM to 9PM). It’s only a short walk to the food spots in Binondo.
  • Street parking : This is the cheapest option, as it only costs P50 for a whole day. However, it is difficult to find a free spot on weekends and holidays. An alternative would be the parking at Binondo Church.
  • Pay parking : You can find pay parking along Yuchengco St. and Escolta St. This is what we recommend especially if you’re visiting on a weekend.

Here are some commonly asked questions about Binondo:

  • Best time to visit : Binondo is a popular day tour in Manila, particularly during Chinese New Year where you can do a food crawl and see dragon dance performances at the same time. If you want to avoid the crowd, it’s best to go here on regular weekdays. If you’re going on weekends or holidays, prepare to wait in long queues especially in the popular restaurants.
  • What to wear : Wear breathable, comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear, as you’ll probably do a lot of walking.
  • What to bring : A bottle of water in case you get tired and thirsty; an eco-bag if you want to buy pasalubong.
  • How much is the budget : It depends on how many restaurants and food stalls you plan to visit. In a small group, a safe budget is around P1500 per person.

Other things you can do in Binondo:

  • Visit the Binondo Church, which is a heritage site built during the Spanish period.
  • Drop by the Chinatown Museum to learn more about the history of Binondo.
  • Take a stroll around Binondo and visit general merchandise stores, jewelry shops along Ongpin Street, and feng shui and crystal stores. If you’re up for some fun activities, have your fortune read in the area! I had a tarot reading in our visit and it was one of the best ones I’ve had. (I’m an avid fan of tarot reading.)
  • Head to Manila Bay for the sunset.

Binondo Travel Tips:

  • Binondo is generally safe. However, as with other city locations, it’s best to practice good common sense and keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
  • Plan your itinerary and decide which food stops you want to visit ahead of time. Most likely, you’ll only visit around 5 restaurants / food stalls.
  • A food trip in Binondo is best done with a partner or friends, so you can share food and split expenses.
  • If you want the Binondo food trip experience but in a more convenient setting, you can go instead to Lucky Chinatown Mall where you can find Chinese restaurants such as King Chef , Shi Lin , and Sincerity , as well as pasalubong stores such as Eng Bee Tin. This tip is particularly useful for families with young kids in tow.

Chinatown – Binondo: A Walking Food Tour

Chinatown - Binondo: A Walking Food Tour

Unlike the upscale neighborhoods found parallel to it around the world, Manila’s Chinatown is nestled in a small enclave within the city, known locally as Binondo.

Binondo in Manila is the oldest Chinatown in the world, established in 1594 by the Spanish Governor Luis Pérez Dasmarinas. Even before the arrival of the Spaniards, Binondo was a place where Filipino-Chinese traders from the province of Fujian managed their businesses, turning Binondo into the center of Chinese commerce in the city.

Thanks to its strategic location, the city became a vital trading post, connecting Asia to the New World with the help of Spanish galleon ships. In those days, Chinese immigrants were not allowed inside the walls of Spanish-controlled Manila, so they settled on the piece of land across the Pasig River, establishing a permanent residence for the growing number of migrants and Chinese citizens who had converted to Catholicism.

This area, strategically positioned and within “cannon shot” range of the Spanish fortress, became known as “Isla de Binondo,” or simply “Binondo.”

Prominent residents of the area include Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and the revered founder of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary, Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo.

With the support of Jesuit and Dominican priests, most Chinese immigrants and traders converted to Catholicism, making it no surprise that Manila’s Chinatown houses two of the most beautiful Baroque churches in the country. The most famous landmark in Chinatown is the Minor Basilica de San Lorenzo Ruiz, named after the first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz, who served as an altar boy in this church during his youth. Binondo Church was constructed in 1596 and is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.

Another church, Santa Cruz Church, built in 1608, stands at the heart of Santa Cruz Square on its eastern side. Despite surviving several earthquakes and powerful typhoons, the church suffered the most significant damage during World War II and had to be rebuilt while preserving its original Baroque architectural style.

These historical churches are some of the highlights of Binondo, a place rich in history and culture that continues to be a vibrant part of Manila.

Despite the fact that most of the Chinese settlers converted to Catholicism, a few of them remained Buddhists. However, whether Catholic or Buddhist, they preserved many traditional Chinese customs and incorporated them with Filipino traditions and beliefs.

The Chinese not only brought their business acumen and astuteness but also their unique flavors. Modern-day Binondo is a gastronomic paradise for all lovers of traditional Chinese cuisine.

As you wander through the narrow streets and tiny alleys, you’ll find countless stalls, restaurants, and hole-in-the-wall eateries serving some of the tastiest Chinese dishes you can imagine.

Given the constant traffic congestion, it’s better to leave your car at home and explore Binondo on foot. Go on a culinary adventure, shop until you drop, and discover trendy clothing and fashionable accessories at unbelievably low prices in the numerous shops.

If gold jewelry is your thing, you can find them in the rows of stores lining Ongpin Street. Just don’t be disappointed if you don’t stumble upon a gold nugget or two.

After you’ve explored all the tourist attractions, take selfies at famous landmarks, and indulged in legendary dishes like siopao, siomai, dumplings, purple hopia, and other flavors, don’t leave Binondo without trying the legendary siapo, siomai, dumplings, purple hopia, and other flavors. Come satisfy your hunger, challenge your taste buds, and embark on a culinary walking tour in Binondo. Kain tayo (Let’s eat)!

Dong Bei Dumpling Restaurant The restaurant is so small, but don’t let its diminutive size fool you. Their dumplings are giant in flavor, and they are probably the best dumplings on this side of Chinatown.

The menu includes pork dumplings, wonton, very chewy dumpling-style bread rolls (Xiao Long Bao), fried pancake dumplings, and tofu dishes. A “must-try” on the menu is the incredibly flavorful garlic dumplings (kuchay), which are sold for only $3 for 14 pieces and are prepared fresh right in front of you. While you wait, they even serve you tea on the house. For refreshment and health, you can also purchase the famous cold Chinese tea: Wong Lo Kat.

And if you still can’t get enough of these dumplings, you can always order more for takeout.

New Po Heng Lumpia House.

If you’re craving Hokkien-style spring rolls (lumpia roll Hokkien-style), you’ve come to the right place. This is simply a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, where at first, you’ll need to navigate through a narrow alley to find it. Surprisingly, the narrow alley opens up to a small and charming courtyard with a spring that belongs to an old residential building. Like many of the Far Eastern restaurants you can find in the heart of Binondo Chinatown, they prepare their lumpia right in front of you. This adds to the gastronomic experience a sense of anticipation and excitement as you indulge in these crispy and appetizing spring rolls, which have a subtle garlic aroma.

Some of the secret ingredients include seaweed (lato), tofu, minced pork, chopped peanuts, and vegetables like carrots and cabbage. The lumpia will be delicious no matter how you choose to have it, whether with a natural flavor, or with the addition of garlic and vinegar. In sweet or sour sauce, and the most flavorful one is the house lumpia – the New Po Heng Lumpia.

Sincerity Café and Restaurant.

Fried chicken is probably one of the most common and simplest dishes to prepare. And if you think you’ve had enough of this simple dish, just try half of Sincerity Restaurant’s famous fried chicken to change your mind (who doesn’t love fried chicken!). Their chicken is, in fact, quite famous and ranks second on the list of the top ten Pinoy-style fried chicken dishes in the Philippines.

Other interesting dishes include sticky rice with salty peanuts (Kiampong), egg noodle stir-fry (Kikiam), fried oyster cake, duck served on a bed of thin egg noodles (Duck Misua), and if you’re in the mood for something more exotic, they also serve fried frog legs.

Ying Ying Tea House.

This place is also one of the beloved culinary gems in Binondo. A quick glance at the establishment might give you the impression of a typical Chinese restaurant. There’s nothing extraordinary about the ambiance or service, but the place is always bustling with people who know what good food should taste like. Every dish at Ying Ying is worth every penny you’ll pay for it.

The most popular dishes include very tender spare ribs, Asado roll, hot salad, and taro soup. The oven-roasted Lechon Macau, with its crispy skin on the outside and tender, juicy meat on the inside, is exactly as it should be.

They also serve some of the tastiest congees (Congee) and dumplings in town. Another recommended dish is the Hakaw (shrimp siomai). To finish your meal, don’t forget to order a glass of Nai Cha, a cold, black tea mixed with milk, a refreshing way to complete your dining experience.

Address: 233-235 Dasmariñas corner Yuchengco Sts. (formerly Nueva St.), Binondo, Manila, Philippines

Phone: (+632) 5310 9031 Hours: Open daily from 7:00 AM to 2:00 AM.

Quick Snack. For the past 47 years, this unpretentious restaurant has been serving not only Chinese dishes but also a fusion of Filipino, American, Spanish, and even Indonesian cuisines. It’s not surprising since the owner, originally of Chinese descent, hails from Indonesia.

Highlighted dishes on the menu include fresh lumpia (a top-seller), a vegetarian version of thin and salty Chinese noodles (misua), a Chinese-style filled pastry akin to empanadas (kutchay ah), and a house specialty – crispy noodles in satay sauce (Sate Mi). Good food at reasonable prices served quickly. It’s a combination that’s hard to beat.

The Original SaLido Restaurant.

This is likely the oldest restaurant in the Binondo district, having been here for over 50 years. It’s famous for its coffee (try some of their selection of Filipino coffee, called Barako), and this place is particularly popular among middle-aged men. Whether it’s for closing a business deal or just enjoying a conversation with friends, a cup of freshly ground coffee is always a treat.

In addition to their famous coffee, they also serve food dishes like Chami (a wide fried noodle dish) that you simply must try, stuffed and fried tofu leaves (Beancurd Roll), Japanese-style pork dumplings (Siomai), salt and pepper spare ribs, preserved salt-cured ham hock (Pata hamon), roasted pork in the Asado style, and their famous and recommended house dish, Salido-style fried rice.

Address: 839 Ongpin St., Binondo Manila, Philippines Phone: (+63 2) 5213331 Hours: Open daily from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao.

Siopao are Chinese-style steamed buns filled with various fillings. Asado Siopao has a sweet filling made of pork, while Bola-Bola Siopao contains minced pork or chicken as the filling. These are classic dishes that you can find in many restaurants. However, if you want to try something a bit different from your regular Siopao, it’s best to visit Guagua Fried Siopao.

Somewhere between Ongpin Street and Bahama Street, you’ll find a small stall that sells Siopao and quickly becomes a favorite among food enthusiasts in Binondo. Treat yourself and find out why everyone raves about these fried Siopao. Just don’t be discouraged if you see people waiting in line, as this delicious Siopao often sells out quickly, and it takes some time to prepare a fresh batch.

So, be prepared to wait a bit to get what you want. You can always take them home and reheat them whenever you like.

Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli*.

Eng Bee Tin is well-known for its delicious Hopia, traditional Chinese pastries with various fillings. Hopia comes in different flavors and styles, and this shop offers some of the tastiest Hopia in Binondo. You can try Hopia Pandan (with a sweet coconut filling), Hopia Piña (with pineapple filling), Hopia Baboy (with pork filling), Hopia Mongo (with mung bean filling), or the classic Hopia Ube (with sweet purple yam filling).

For those who prioritize health, they also have Hopia Mongo Lite (with mung bean). A package of “Hopia for Long Life” would make a perfect birthday gift to send your best wishes for longevity and prosperity. However, Eng Bee Tin offers more than just Hopia. They also sell other Chinese snacks, traditional Filipino products, and even frozen items for you to take home. Keep an eye out for the purple fire extinguisher-themed packaging; these are the generous owner’s contributions to the Chinese community in Binondo.

If you prefer a quieter atmosphere while enjoying your Hopia, they also have a coffee shop called Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli’s Cafe Mezzanine or “Fireman’s Coffee Shop.” In addition to their products, the coffee shop serves simpler dishes and the famous Filipino dessert Halo-Halo, which is a refreshing blend of crushed ice and various sweet ingredients.

Manila Chinatown: A first timer’s guide to Binondo Food Trip

food tour in binondo

Having spent 4 years studying inside Intramuros back in college, I asked myself why the hell I did not become a foodie when I was always a few sprints away from overrated and underrated kainans of Manila?

Well, that’s one of the maaaany regrets of my teenage years but I am making up with self now.

food tour in binondo

And so fast forward one day of February, me and my coffee friends went to Binondo : the world’s oldest Chinatown. Damn. This food crawl is also pretty much a walk down in history too. Very interesting! To give you a little background, this historical Chinatown was established in 1594 by Chinese traders back in the old days of the Philippines. And knowing that Chinese Mandarin is still being spoken well by the Filipino-Chinese residents of Binondo today amazes me.

Salazar Bakery

food tour in binondo

Coming from Lucky Chinatown Mall where we parked, our first stop was Salazar Bakery in Ongpin Street. First opened in 1947, this bakery is still a busy shop today. For starters, we had Hopia and Tikoy . But what aroused my palates was the Tikoy with Peanuts . I swear I thought it was weird at first but it got interestingly weird. And maybe interestingly good. I hella love the taste of Sago’t Gulaman and this tikoy is so insane it’s almost the same! Compliments well with the salty dry peanut filling. Love at first bite.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao

food tour in binondo

On the other side of Ongpin Street is Shanghai Fried Siopao . This street siopao only cost P22 and for chrissakes, my friends and I agreed to share two siopaos for all of us. The reason was to save our tummies and avoid being fully loaded as much as possible but maaan, the taste is hella good! Such a breath of fresh air from the processed ones we are having just because it is convenient. I mean, this one is fucking authentic I guess? So all in all, Shanghai Fried Siopao is my best-spent P22 and I am highly recommending it to you . And not having a whole Siopao is questioning what the hell is wrong.

New Quan Yin Chay Vegetarian Food House

food tour in binondo

Okay so this is the kind of menu that my fit fam would love. They cater to a wide variety of yummy food so we asked what’s their best seller and they gladly suggest the Seafood Soup . The big bowl of soup costs P150 and it’s very sulit . And for a vegetarian meal, I’d say it was tasty not to mention there’s a lot going on inside that bowl. Perhaps one of the best healthy eats in Binondo, for sure.

Café Mezzanine

food tour in binondo

Located on the 2nd floor in the heart of Chinatown, Café Mezzanine is a fusion of Filipino and Chinese Food. We ordered Lechon Kawali (P135), Kiampong (P70), and Xiaolongbao  (P180). Fucking tasty! I swear I loved it very much.

Lechon Kawali is always a stunner but that one is a jaw-dropper. Like seriously? How can good food be 10x better?

Their Kiampong is hardcore tasty as well. I could eat that alone without anything.

And the xiaolongbao? What the hell is xiaolongbao anyway? I never had it before. But I knew it was great! I like how it gives your mouth bursting flavors of sweet to savory. And a lot of joy too.

Dong Bei Dumplings

food tour in binondo

The famous hole in the wall authentic dumpling house in Yuchengco Street, Binondo. This tiny food house can be jam-packed, waited in line for minutes but they make your dumplings in front of you, so I think that was entertaining.

Okay. Can I just say that the dumplings were phenomenal? P200 for 14pcs. I personally think there is really no wow factor in this place but I like the fact that they are practicing the tradition of making dumplings every day. Fresh ingredients, made daily. Or maybe I still haven’t discovered the wow factor? But please, go to this place. You’ll love it there.

Eng Bee Tin

food tour in binondo

Another famous Chinese deli chain in Ongpin Street is Eng Bee Tin . Who doesn’t know Eng Bee Tin?! I personally love this because I grew up loving its best selling hopia! Their 3-story store is super awesome too. 1st floor is a grocery, the 2nd floor is the restaurant, and the 3rd floor is a freaking museum! Holy WOW. But unfortunately, the museum was under construction and was closed to the public. Which was pretty sad. Anyway, this store has a lot to offer. Name it, and they have it. Quality restaurant and well, hard to leave without a takeaway ube hopia!

food tour in binondo

Walking through Nueva Street in Binondo, you’ll see Holland . It wasn’t really that much not until the Chocnut drink mix  (P100) and Chocnut spread (P80). I mean, what kind of fresh heaven is this? I am biased in loving chocnut. Aren’t we all? We reached this mini grocery store at around 6:30 pm already and that only means missing Cuapao (pork buns)  Fucked, because I heard a lot of good reviews about it!

Sincerity Café and Restaurant

food tour in binondo

So we went on the other side of Yuchengco Street. And honestly, though I was totally looking forward to going to Sincerity Café and Restaurant only for one thing: Freaking frog legs . But a boy could only be so unlucky. We missed it for the universe. So we ended up ordering their famous claim to fame  fried chicken  (half for P160) and kikiam (forgot the price lol sorry) .

Their fried chicken is, well, fucking fantastic. It is to die for! Super far from the western style good ‘ol f. chicken. The chicken itself, from the outer crispy skin down to the bones, it has a mild sweetness, a balanced mix of spices and a hella homey taste.

Oh, kikiam . This one’s quite authentic, wrapped in actual bean curd skin. I can say that it’s the best tasting kikiam I had. And the sauce, man. Freaking adorable.

La Zhou La Mien

food tour in binondo

Since this is our 9th stop, let me fucking vomit first. Just kidding ! Hahaha I was so full already. But the heaviest meal comes at the end because life is full of unfair surprises. Me and my friends agreed to share a big plate of beef knife mien  for P260. And even if I feel very full, I still find it appetizing which for me was something new. I mean just looking at the photo itself.

food tour in binondo

Sooooo after 4 hours of binge eating, we walked back to Lucky Chinatown Mall, had some Thai milk tea, drove to the world trade center for Big Bad Wolf (I happen to buy 5 exciting books!) drove back to Quezon City to drink beers until 5 in the morning. Ahhhh lupet!

Bucket list for the next Binondo food trip:

  • Fried frog legs (Sincerity Restaurant)
  • Po Heng Lumpia House
  • Masuki Mami House
  • Kim Hiong Food Garden
  • James Grocery Carvajal
  • Peking duck from Wai Ying Fast Food
  • ASADO ROLL 🙁
  • Visit churches

Top 3 Pop Food from this food crawl:

Marron – Shanghai Fried Siopao, Serenity’s Fried Chicken, Tikoy with Peanuts (Salazar Bakery)

Kean – Shanghai Fried Siopao, Dong Bei Dumpling, Kikiam (Serenity Restaurant)

Jeremiah – Dong Bei Dumpling, Knife Mien, Shanghai Fried Siopao

Angela – Xiaolongbao (Mezzanine Café), Shanghai Fried Siopao, Serenity’s Fried Chicken

CONCLUSION:

  • For fuck’s sake, think before bringing a car. Parking was hella shitty. Or better yet, come early.
  • If you think it’s good, eat it and enjoy it. Do not hesitate! Or you’ll regret the hell out of it.
  • Start the food crawl early. Some restaurants are only open until late afternoon.
  • Bring a water bottle. Trust me, it saves a lot.
  • I should learn more about how to take good food photos.
  • Good food is always better and cheaper when shared! We only spent not more than P500 each for all the food we ate.

Binondo continues to fascinate Filipinos today with its vibrant Chinese culture. Part of its charm is its wide array of restaurants and kiosks that serve traditional and modern Chinese food.

It is no wonder that all year round—not just Chinese New Year!—many flock to Manila’s Chinatown to get a taste of what it has to offer.

Equally fascinating though is its history. Established in 1594 by the Spaniards to house Chinese migrants who converted to Catholicism, it is considered the world’s oldest Chinatown.

Founded in 1594 (yes you read that right), Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world! This list of the top 6 street foods to eat in Binondo Chinatown will get you well on your way to planning your very own food tour.

This lively and historic district was set up across the river from Intramuros district back in the 16 th century, where all the wealthy colonial Spaniards resided at the time. This permanent settlement for the Chinese immigrants flourished, causing it to become the centre of commerce and trade in Manila by the 20 th century.

Chinatowns are known for being a hot spot of culture, commerce, and most especially food! Many things have changed over the years in here in Binondo. One thing that’s remained is that the locals know how to do street food right.

Enough chit chat! Ready to plan your own historic street food adventure through the oldest Chinatown in the world? Here’s your top 6 street foods to eat in Binondo Chinatown, Manila.

Fried Siopao

Ripped open fried siopao full of pork top street food in Binondo

Siopao are a popular Chinese-influenced Filipino steamed bun, and the ones at Shanghai Fried Siopao in Binondo are worth the trip alone. The slightly sweet, fluffy buns are packed to the brim, full of tender ground pork, onion and chives. Once steamed, the cooked meat and veggies create an incredibly juicy bao .

What makes the ones here at Shanghai Fried Siopao extra tasty and unique is that they’re steamed in oil. They end up coming out slightly fried and crispy on the bottom, while still pillowy, soft and extremely juicy throughout.

Quite different from your typical steamed bun, we had to try two just to be sure of how good they were.

Made and cooked in their small shop right along the busy Ongpin Street, these fried siopao have been a staple of Chinatown for many years. The siopao are bought up as soon as they come out of the steamer, satisfying the line-up of hungry customers. So, whenever you stop by, you’re guaranteed to get one that’s piping hot and fresh.

Kuchay Ah Pie

Kuchay ah pie cut open, food to eat in Binondo

Next up on the list is kuchay ah pie, a fried pastry that looks similar to an empanada. They get their name from the prominent flavour of chives, which is kuchay in Filipino.

These little meat pies are made of a flaky pastry that’s so rich it’s almost buttery, and because they’re fried and not baked, they’re extra crispy. The pie is stuffed full of pork, tofu, chives, turnips and carrots, married in a savoury yet slightly sweet gravy.

We couldn’t believe how heavy and packed full they were. So much so they resembled more of a ball than a pie!

The best place to try these is at Quik Snack. They do a number of different Chinese-Filipino dishes here, but they’re especially known for their pies, with the kuchay ah being their number one.

Pork and Chive Dumplings

Pork and chive filled insides of dumplings in box top street food in Binondo

An absolute must eat street food in Binondo Chinatown is the pork and chive dumplings at Dong Bei Dumpling .

Thin dumpling skin is loaded with a mixture of pork , onions and plenty of chives. Immediately after being made by hand, they’re boiled until they float. The dumplings come out so full of flavour and juicy, they literally melt in your mouth. So much so they boarder on soup dumplings!

They’re served with a special homemade garlic-vinegar-soy sauce mixture, with a spicy chilli sauce on the side for an added kick. This is some spicy sauce, so if you like your tongue on fire, we highly recommend it.

What sets Dong Bei apart is that the dumplings here are made fresh to order with quality ingredients. You won’t find anything frozen around here, and as far as we’re concerned, it really doesn’t get any better than that.

Hand Pulled Noodles

Top street food Binondo bowl of beef noodles

This delicious looking bowl of fresh hand pulled noodles can be found at a fantastic place just on the outskirts of Binondo. At Lan Zhou La Mian, they pull their noodles fresh to order, right at the front of the shop so you can see the chefs in action as they prepare your meal.

We don’t know about you, but hand pulled noodles always hit that little bit different for us. Dunked in boiling hot water, they only take 15 seconds to cook. The freshness can be tasted in the texture of the noodles, which are just that bit firmer and chewier than others.

There’s a number of different noodle soups to choose from, but we recommend the beef lamien. Full of tender beef, bok choy, scallions and carrots in a hearty, beefy broth, you won’t believe how generous they are with the noodles!

Each table is ready to go with a massive bowl of scallions and sauces for you to add, dependant on your tastes.

Ube hopia sitting on table

These little pucks are hopia , one of the most popular pastries found throughout Binondo.

This traditional pastry is full of thick mung bean paste inside a thin pastry shell. The soft textured pastry can be flavoured with a number of different tastes, but the local favourite is ube , purple yam.

Eng Bee Tin opened up in 1912 and were the first to introduce ube jam into the traditional hopia in the 1980’s, as a way to revitalise a once dying business. The vibrant purple colour stood out amongst all the others, bringing them to fame in no time. Now with multiple stores throughout Binondo, tasting their hopia and Chinese-Filipino pastries is a must.

We decided to the best way to taste hopia was to go for both the original and ube .

The ube has a distinct sweet jam taste to it that’s perfect if you have a sweet tooth. If you’re not a massive sweet fan, then go for the original. Nice and pasty, these taste more like a sweet white bean than anything else. The hopia come in packs of four, which is a pretty good deal for what you pay for.

Many shops around Binondo sell hopia , so have a wander around if you want to taste the different ones of this historic Chinatown.

When exploring Binondo in Manila, you’ll definitely need to cool down at some point, trust us!

We love a good bubble tea, and luckily right next door to Eng Bee Tin (the flagship location) is where you can find the best ube bubble milk tea.

With a taste similar to taro, their ube milk tea is creamy, cold and mildly sweet with a strong ube flavour that’s oh so refreshing. Not to mention the tapioca pearls are fresh, chewy and delicious. You’re gonna find it hard to resist anything ube flavoured from now on! It’s definitely become our new go-to favourite.

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo

  • Published on February 6, 2024

Picture of April Bewell

Hello friends and fellow foodies! It’s your gal April from RelaxLangMom.com here to share an amazing adventure I recently had -a DIY Binondo Food Tour exploring the historic and delicious neighborhood of Binondo in Manila.

If you’re a homeschooling mom looking for an activity for the kids or simply itching to swap your spatula for a pair of chopsticks and dive into a world where the streets are paved with dumplings, welcome to your guide to mastering a Binondo food tour. Binondo, Manila’s Chinatown, is not just a place—it’s a food adventure waiting to happen, bursting with flavors, colors, and history.

But, like any epic quest, it comes with its dragons to slay (read: crowds and narrow streets) and treasures to find (hello, best lumpia in town!). Let’s embark on this gastronomic journey together, where I’ll arm you with tips, tricks, and reminders to make your Binondo food trip as smooth as a freshly steamed rice cake

My girlfriends from UP Los Banos were wanting to explore Binondo for the Binondo food tour experience for so long and one weekend, we just decided to go. You know, the usual, “biglaang lakad, natutuloy” thing. And I decided to dive deep into the cuisine and culture of Binondo. Let me tell you – it was pure foodgasm from start to delicious finish! Our guide, Dra Mara, a doctor friend from the nearby Manila Hospital, walked us through the alleys with stories as rich as the neighborhood’s history.

But First, Binondo History.

As any Filipino knows, Binondo is regarded as the oldest Chinatown in the world, satisfying Manila’s culinary cravings since the 16th century. Its narrow streets, lined with Spanish-style architecture, bustling shops, and eateries, truly transport you back in time. Aptly dubbed the ‘Chinese commercial district,’ Binondo’s rows of must-try restaurants will certainly set your heart racing and make your mouth water.

Today, Ongpin Street is a gastronomic paradise, home to the renowned Eng Bee Tin hopia and numerous pioneering Chinese restaurants like Toho Panciteria Antigua – the oldest in the Philippines, Ma Mon Luk, Ling Nam, and many others, each famous for their signature dishes. These culinary institutions, having expanded nationwide, reflect the rich culinary heritage of Binondo.

Most historical books would say that Binondo was established 1594, but the truth was long before the Spaniards came in, there was already a bustling Chinese community in Manila. Binondo became the center of trade due to the establishment of “Sangley Parian” which means “Chinese Flea-market”. The word “parian” came from the Chinese word “xiang lei” which means traveling merchants and “palien” meaning federation. Behind the dazzle of a different culture and cuisine, Binondo has a dark history that not a lot of people know.

Long ago, the Manila/Acapulco Galleon Trade started the migration of Chinese selling Chinese products exported in the Americas. This trade made Manila the world’s trading center. The Spaniards were so afraid of the Chinese taking the Galleon Trade that they conspired to drive them out of Manila. So in the late 1500s-early 1600s, the Spaniards mounted a campaign against the Chinese that led to the massacre of an estimated 20000 Chinese traders. The remaining traders found themselves confined within the walls of Binondo, widely recognized as the nation’s inaugural Chinatown or Parian, scattered across the entirety of the Philippines. The Parians was originally exclusive only to baptized Catholic Chinese who were allowed to sell their goods. Those who were not baptized had to stay at Cavite’s Sangley Point where galleons were built. Even those outside Luzon also had their own version like this Cebu Parian.

The original parian was located at Mehan Garden (now Liwasang Bonifacio). This is the reason why the Intramuros gate on that location is called “Parian Gate”. Because of the increasing number of Chinese migrants, the parian located at Mehan Garden became overcrowded. To address this concern, Spanish Governor-General Luis Perez Dasmariñas donated “Isla de Binundok” (the original name of Binondo) which is an island surrounded by Pasig River and esteros. He purchased the land for 200 pesos from Don Antonio Velada and made it tax-free. He then ordered to move the Sangley Parian to “Calle Sacrista” (now Ongpin Street). Governor-General Dasmariñas also requested the Dominican priests to take charge of converting the Chinese to Catholicism and ordered the building of a church in honor of San Gabriel which is the present-day Binondo Church.

Since Binondo was an island, the rich Spanish residents of Intramuros had to take “casco” ferries to cross the Pasig River to go shopping in Binondo. To improve access, “Puente España” (Bridge of Spain) was built in 1632 by the Chinese. The bridge was located near “Puerta Isabela II” of Intramuros and spanned to Calle Nueva (now E.T.exclamation Yuchengco St). The street that intersects with Calle Nueva is Escolta, which got its name from the Spanish word “escoltar” which means “to escort”. This is because horse-carts were stationed at the foot of the bridge to “escort” the Spanish residents to Binondo and San Nicolas for shopping and dining. Binondo became a progressive shopping center that the Chinese merchants extended the parian to the neighboring district “Barrio Baybay”. The district was later renamed “San Nicolas” in honor of the patron saint of merchants, San Nicolas Tolentino.

If you ever go to Binondo, remember that this district is more than a mere historical site; it’s a living, breathing witness to the dark history of the Spanish colonization and war not only against the Tagalogs of Manila (FIlipinos) but also against the Chinese people.

But shifting to another perspective, did you know that the Binondo’s food scene was influenced not just by Chinese immigrants but also samsams from India, chappals from Spain, and even rich Filipino Ilustrados? One of the “cantinas” was actually one of the settings for Jose Rizal’s El Fili meetings. The melting pot was in full effect in this tiny area.

We walked a lot and this article presents a comprehensive walking itinerary, designed to immerse you in the essence of Binondo, from its iconic landmarks to its hidden culinary gems.

Café Mezzanine : For breakfast, we headed to one of Ongpin’s most famous restaurant -the Cafe Mezzanine, known as the “fireman’s coffee shop,”. It’s not only a place for a caffeine fix but also has great Chinese eats like savory noodles, signature dim sum, and other innovative Chinese dishes. Eating here contributes to a noble cause since all of their earnings go to supporting the local volunteer fire brigade. On the con side, I’ve eaten here twice and the staff is not so friendly. Efficient but not very friendly.

Carvajal Street : This narrow alleyway is a hidden gem for food enthusiasts. It offers an array of street food, fresh fruits, and unique finds. It’s an authentic experience, less frequented by tourists and more by locals. It’s easy to miss so mark it on your maps.

Snack Break at Quik Snack : A culinary treasure, this spot in Carvajal St is renowned for its authentic, freshly made dumplings. It’s an ideal place for a mid-morning snack, offering a taste of traditional Chinese cuisine. Founded in 1967 by Amah Pilar, then already 60 years old, Quik Snack defied expectations. In a time when women rarely ventured into the business world, Amah Pilar, known for her culinary skills, decided to share her passion for cooking with the community. Amah Pilar honed her expertise in vegetarian dishes while serving at Buddhist temples. This unique experience translated into Quik Snack’s menu, offering a variety of vegetarian options alongside classic Hokkien dishes.

The Tofu Cake called Ama Pilar’s Tofu with cilantro and cucumbers was especially interesting because its crunchy on the outside and soft inside..The sweetened soy sauce rounds off the plate. I’m not really a fan of tofu but this one is good.

The Sate Beef Mi -something like Pancit Guisado but different because of the beef flavor and a hint of 5-spice. It was good and flavorful. We also had Kuchay Ah, a kind of empanada filled with pork, muhrooms, tofu, chives, and number of other vegetables.

What really caught my attention was the frozen section were you can buy pre cooked goodies. Was really wanting to buy some but since were walking, I was avoiding to buy too much stuff so my bag won’t be too heavy. We ordered as little as we could since we are still planning to eat a lot but these were already too heavy for the three of us.

Oh, and the owner was really friendly -you can ask her anything about the food and she’ll suggest if you can’t decide. We bumped in Ivan Man Dy’s food tour (of the famous Binondo Walk Tour) here and it was really cool to see people actually joining Binondo food tours!

Best Binondo Restaurants Online Reviews -Quik Snack

  • Home-cooked Tsinoy favorites:  Many reviewers commend the restaurant’s authentic Chinese-Filipino (“Tsinoy”) dishes, emphasizing their delicious and comforting flavors. Popular dishes include Sate Beef Mi (fried noodles with beef), Lumpiang Sariwa (fresh spring rolls), and Kuchay-Ah (fried wonton with chive filling).
  • Affordable prices:  Quik Snack is known for its budget-friendly offerings, making it a popular choice for casual dining.
  • Historical charm:  Established in 1967, the restaurant holds historical significance in Binondo and adds an element of nostalgia to the dining experience.
  • Ambiance and service:  While some reviewers find the ambiance simple and casual, others mention it can be crowded and noisy during peak hours. Service speed may also vary depending on the time of your visit.
  • Limited menu:  Compared to larger restaurants, Quik Snack offers a more concise menu focusing on classic dishes.

Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Center: After a short walk, we went for a quick visit to this serene Buddhist temple offers a peaceful break. It’s a little non descript and you’ll almost miss it if you werent actually looking for it. Its blended with the old Chinese buildings and stockrooms. It’s an out of ordinary reminder of Binondo’s spiritual heritage and a place for quiet reflection amidst the busy streets.

Lunch at Sincerity : It was time for lunch and we’re supposed to have it at Sincerity Cafe. We were all full and since all of us has already eaten at this iconic Binondo restaurant, we decided to skip it. Renowned for its unique offerings like oyster cake, fried chicken, and tofu dishes, Sincerity is a must-visit for a hearty lunch. It’s a place where traditional recipes and genuine flavors take center stage.

Escolta Street : Once the commercial hub of Manila, Escolta has evolved into a blend of the old and the new. Here, historic buildings stand alongside contemporary art spaces and cafes. Feast your eyes on old buildings and lots of small shops to window shop on. It’s a long walk but worth it!

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo 29

Yuchegnco Plaza – At the end of Escolta St is the Plaza Yuchengco. a redeveloped park project by the Mayor’s Office. Fronting the old Post Office right beside the newly rehabilitated Pasig River, it’s a bit of an old combined with the new. Plaza Yuchengco has a collection of native trees that you can learn new things about. It’s a bit of a long walk but don’t miss this as it has really good views!

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo 30

Polland Hopia – Now that we’ve walked off that heavy Quik Snack food, were ready for more! We proceeded to Polland -another Chinese Hopia in the running for the best Hopi along with Eng Bee Tin, Salazar, and Holland. But what we really came here for is not the Hopia but its famous Chinese Lumpia. Chinese Lumpia is a version of our Pinoy Lumpiang Sariwa but with thinly sliced vegetables, tofu, and mushrooms and lots of peanuts. Its filling and fresh!

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo 35

Jones Bridge : After that snack, we went on another leisurely stroll over Jones Bridge, a turn of the centrury bridge constructed by the Americans. At night, the bridge, with its vintage lampposts and view of the Pasig River, presents a picturesque scene, perfect for evening photography. Unfortunately, it was still a bright mid afternoon but we still enjoyed the photoshoots! We passed by the Binondo Filipino Chinese Friendship Arc on the way and I added the photos here!

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo 39

1919 Grand Cafe : A late afternoon visit here for tea and cakes is a delightful way to wind down after a full day tour. The cafe offers a traditional ambiance, perfect for reflecting on the day’s experiences.  This building was the former HSBC building at the corner of Juan Luna and Escolta. It’s a 97-year old building built in 1922 and was now renovated into the  1919 Grand Cafe . The cafe had the original facade of the building. It’s surprisingly posh -the kind that lawyers meet in, or meet up with the parents ala Kdramas. The food is not Chinese and we appreciated a little bit of sweets after a long day!

  • If you prioritize historical ambiance and cultural experience, the cafe could be a good choice.
  • If you’re looking for a wider range of food options and consistent quality at a specific price point, you might consider exploring other restaurants in Binondo.

Eng Bee Tin Flagship Store – Before going home, we need to get some pasalubong so it is most iportant that we end here. We walked back to Ongpin, dropping by the many groceries and bakeries, Shanghai Fried Siopao, sugarcane juice along the corner of Ongpin, tanghulu, etc. By this time, everyone is so tired to take pictures, lol. Still as fun!

DIY Binondo Food Tour -Exploring the Historical and Culinary Wonders of Binondo 49

A day spent walking through Binondo for a Binondo Food Tour is really a journey through time, culture, and cuisine. This itinerary guides you through the historical and culinary landmarks of Manila’s Chinatown and also offers an immersive walking experience into the heart and soul of this unique district.

There are a lot of stops we werent able to cover such as Dong Bei, Sincerity, Ying Ying Tea House, Masuki, and Salido Restaurant. The girlfriends are already planning the next Binondo Food Crawl, so hopefully it gets scheduled soon!

How To Get To Binondo

  • Take the LRT-1 from any station and get off at Carriedo station. The fare is around ₱30 depending on the distance traveled.
  • From Carriedo station, you can walk to Binondo in about 13 minutes.
  • Take a bus going to Divisoria or Claro M. Recto. Many jeepneys from the LRT line pass through Binondo, so you can just ask the driver or conductor if they will pass by your destination. The fare is usually around ₱15-₱22.
  • Get off near your destination in Binondo.
  • Taxis are readily available in Manila. Just flag one down and tell the driver that you’re going to Binondo. The fare will depend on the traffic, but it’s usually around ₱80-₱95.

By Pasig Ferry:

  • Take the Pasig River Ferry from any station and get off at Escolta station. The fare is around ₱25.
  • From Escolta station, you can walk to Binondo in about 10 minutes.

Here are some additional tips:

  • If you’re not familiar with the area, it’s best to ask for directions from the locals.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against petty theft.
  • If you’re taking the bus, make sure to have the exact fare ready as most jeepneys don’t give change.

A few reminders and guidelines for a successful Binondo Food Tour!

1. planning your culinary quest:.

Map Out Your Food Stops: Begin with the end in mind. Research and list down the must-try spots. From the infamous Cafe Mezzanine’s Mami noodles to Dong Bei’s dumplings, plotting your course will save you from wandering aimlessly and wasting precious eating time.

Timing is Everything: Aim for off-peak hours. Early birds catch the…tastiest siopao. Late mornings or early afternoons on weekdays can help you avoid the lunch rush.

2. Navigating Binondo with Kids:

Safety in Numbers: Binondo can be bustling. A portable child leash or a brightly colored cap for your little ones can keep them close and visible.

Snack Packs: Pack water. While water is easy enough to buy, having something on hand for immediate thirst is a lifesaver.

3. Embracing the Adventure:

Try Something New: Encourage your family to step out of their comfort zone. Whether it’s a strange new dish or an unfamiliar dessert, make it a game. Who knows? You might just discover your next family favorite.

Capture the Moment: Binondo is a feast for the senses and the camera. Snap away, but remember to live in the moment too.

4. Health and Comfort:

Dress for Success: Comfortable clothing and shoes are a must. You’ll be on your feet a lot, navigating through crowded alleys and standing in line for that oh-so-worth-it street food.

Stay Hydrated: Manila’s heat is no joke. Keep water bottles handy to stay hydrated as you explore.

Bathroom Breaks: Know where the clean restrooms are. Some restaurants allow use of their facilities for customers, so plan accordingly.

Parking: If you’re planning to bring your car, there is no chance of you parking nearby. Look up malls and parking areas where you can leave your car and valuables.

5. Respect the Culture:

Cash is King: Many vendors in Binondo operate on a cash-only basis. Withdraw enough cash beforehand to avoid looking for ATMs in a pinch.

Mind Your Manners: Be patient and polite. A smile and a simple “thank you” in Filipino or even in Hokkien can go a long way in showing respect for the local culture and its people.

Dress appropriately : If you’re planning to go inside temples and churches, do not go in sleeveless shirts and shorts, or any other skimpy outfit.

As you wander through its streets, you realize that Binondo is more than a destination; it’s a narrative of resilience, cultural fusion, and gastronomic excellence. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a cultural explorer, or a food lover, Binondo welcomes you with open arms and a multitude of stories waiting to be discovered. In this historic district, every step is a step back in time, every bite a taste of tradition, and every moment an opportunity to embrace the rich tapestry of Filipino-Chinese heritage.

Flower bouquet sale

Open Hearts Art Center and Gemelli are partnering to sell handcrafted and painted paper flower bouquets at the Italian eatery at 70 Westgate Parkway in West Asheville.

Proceeds will support the differently abled artists who handmade the creations at the local nonprofit studio and gallery.

Open Hearts’ mission is to represent and empower adults with varied abilities to reach their full potential through the arts. Professional artists and seasoned caregivers encourage Open Hearts artists to draw inspiration from personal stories.

The Paper Flower project evolved from a Valentine’s Day to a year-round endeavor in which Open Heart artists and volunteers make the flower kits to sell at several locations in the city, including Gemelli.

“It is fitting that ‘flower power’ is a crucial way to ensure that creative empowerment is ever present in these artists' lives,” Courtney Hannen, Open Hearts staffer and former hostess at Gemelli’s sister restaurant Strada Italiano, said in a news release. Hannen manages The Paper Flower project.

At Gemelli, guests may purchase mini bouquets that include six stems for $18. Larger bouquets include nine stems and sold for $30. Payments are accepted via cash or Venmo with 100% of sales going to Open Hearts.

“Supporting the community, and especially nonprofits, is one of our core values,” Gemelli owner Anthony Cerrato said in a news release. “We love being able to give back wherever we can, and when Courtney approached us about the partnership, it was a no brainer. The flowers enhance the space and it’s a very worthy cause.”

Gemelli’s paper flower bouquets were designed specifically for the local restaurant where they are displayed on the dining tables.

Additional artworks are sold at Open Hearts’ gallery throughout the year with sales split between the artist and center to cover operational costs.

The 5 best nyc dinner cruises for food & views.

These dinner cruises provide some of the best views of Manhattan.

The Best NYC Dinner Cruises

Friends enjoying a La Barca Cantina dinner cruise.

Courtesy of La Barca Cantina

When you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks. The solution? A boat ride. A breezy sail in New York Harbor can feature everything from an elegant dinner to a live jazz band to tacos and tequila. Read on to discover the top-rated New York City dinner cruise options as determined by travel expert opinion and recent reviews.

City Cruises New York Bateaux Premier Dinner Cruise

Price: From $144 Duration: 3 hours Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.

Climbing aboard the Bateaux feels like stepping into a greenhouse, with its glass-enclosed structure and water views in every direction. There are no bad seats on this boat, but as an upgrade you can reserve a window table for the best views of the Hudson River, the East River and the New York Harbor. This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).

The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise

Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.

Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.

After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.

Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.

La Barca Cantina

La Barca Cantina dinner cruise with lights on boat at night.

Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.

One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.

La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Choose between kicking back in the climate-controlled cabin or on the open-air deck throughout this evening cruise, which includes views of Manhattan landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. While this cruise doesn't offer dinner, one complimentary alcoholic beverage is included, and a cash bar offers additional drinks and snacks. Listen to music by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more as you sail past the twinkling Manhattan skyline. Those traveling in a group should keep in mind: Tickets are slightly discounted for groups of 4 to 16.

Circle Line New York City Harbor Lights Cruise

Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise at night with New York City buildings in the background.

Courtesy of Circle Line

Price: From $54 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.

When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.

Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.

Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.

U of I Locations: Moscow (Main Campus)

From the moment you step on campus, you’ll understand why the University of Idaho has been named the most beautiful college in the state . Iconic buildings are connected by tree-filled green spaces, walkable paths and welcoming plazas. Don’t be surprised if you’re greeted with a friendly smile and wave from a peer or professor, especially on the historic Hello Walk.

Our community extends way beyond campus. Moscow is a tight-knit town of about 25,000 people, full of vibrant activities, businesses and events that love to welcome college students. You’ll find incredible opportunities for recreation and exploration in the surrounding area, too.

Want to see it all for yourself? Plan your campus visit today .

Life on Campus

Whether you live in the residence halls , a fraternity or sorority or off-campus, you’ll be minutes away from your classes and places to study and play.

There’s always something to do: grab a snack in the Idaho Student Union Building , check out a book from the U of I Library 's more than 2 million holdings, take in the beauty of nature in the Arboretum and Botanical Garden , watch a play in the Hartung Theater  or a game in the ICCU Arena , take a fitness class in the Student Recreation Center , catch a Vandal Entertainment -sponsored concert and so much more.

A True College Town

Venture only a few minutes off campus and you’ll be in downtown Moscow. It’s no wonder Seattle Magazine called it “a college town with a soul that shines through year-round” — the calendar is packed with festivals, cultural events and community gatherings like our award-winning farmers’ market on Main Street.

No matter what you like to do, you’ll find an activity to fall in love with . Experience a local art museum or theater production, dance to a live band at a street fair or a local coffee shop, dress in period garb for the Moscow Renaissance Fair or enter a local 5K run or bike race. Volunteer opportunities abound with local nonprofits that support the arts, sustainability, youth and children, the LGBTQ community, health care and more.

And did we mention food? You’ll find a huge co-op with natural and organic options, cozy pubs and coffee shops with Pacific Northwest vibes, locally owned restaurants with cuisines from around the world, and funky hole-in-the-wall spots for affordable college-town snacks.

A Hub For Outdoor Adventure

Moscow sits at the heart of the Palouse, a one-of-a-kind landscape of rolling hills and scenic vistas. We’re surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers full of opportunities for adventure , whether you love hiking, biking, camping, fishing or just taking in a gorgeous sunset. You’ll experience all four seasons in North Idaho, too — so bring your sunscreen for a late-summer rafting trip and your parka for skiing, snowboarding or ice skating in the winter.

Gain outdoor skills and connect with other adventurous students through the U of I Outdoor Program . Want to take your own excursion? Rent equipment through the Outdoor Rental Center .
