The Ultimate Guide To Exploring The Miami Wynwood Walls

January 11, 2021 //  by  Florida Trippers

Of all the things to do in Miami , perhaps the Wynwood Walls are the most incredible. There are so many great museums in Miami showcasing the best art from all over the world, but Wynwood really takes it to the next level.

Throughtout all of Miami, you can find art! From the beaches and colorful condos of South Beach to the monuments and statues that capture history, art is everywhere you look.

If you’re truly an art lover or you’re looking for something unique to do, you must visit the Wynwood Walls. Celebrating and capturing Miami’s unique culture, you won’t find a better representation of raw street art anywhere else in the world! This is truly one of the Best Places To Stay In Miami!

Table of Contents

What Are The Wynwood Walls?

The Wynwood Walls are a series of murals in Miami in the warehouse district of Wynwood. It is one of the largest open-air art installations in the world.

It all began in 2009 when the late Tony Goldman used the walls of the warehouses as canvases for artists to create art. He successfully built a bustling community out of the ashes of a forgotten neighborhood.

What started with the buildings 25th-26th Street complex has grown into a bustling art district. Every wall has been transformed into a giant canvas, arguably creating the greatest collection of street art ever seen in one place!

Over the years, the community has expanded to include the Wynwood Walls Garden. The space showcases four additional murals in a beautifully landscaped, lush open area for guests to relax and take in the art.

The most recent addition to the community is the Wynwood Doors! A piece of land, formerly a dump, was transformed into a park with boulders and elegant trees. Metal rolldown gates were installed onto the surrounding walls, giving artists even more space to create!

A mural features chunky lettering and crudely drawn monkeys in bright colors.

How Do They Choose Artists For The Wynwood Walls?

Every artist in the world wants to leave their mark on Wynwood. All eyes are on the district. It doesn’t matter what kind of artist you are, to have your work at Wynwood Walls means it will be seen by a lot of people.

While a few of the murals are permanent, the collection changes. Usually once an artist has painted a mural, it remains there for one to three years. But if the art on the walls change, how do you get to be chosen?

Artists submit project proposals to a board at Goldman Properties. These proposals must include images of the proposed mural. The artists selected are a combination of emerging new artists and established, world-class artists.

Parking In Wynwood

Parking in Miami can be challenging, so if you’re planning on driving to the Wynwood Walls you need to be prepared. Keep in mind, you will have to do some amount of walking no matter where you park.

Parking in Miami is not free, but luckily the city has made payment easier. Miami is the first city in the United States to accept mobile payments for parking! Simply download the PayByPhone app.

With PayByPhone, you don’t have to track down a meter to pay for parking. You’ll even receive push notifications when your time is about to expire! You can even pay on the spot to extend your time. No more parking tickets!

Nearby street parking is difficult to obtain, but if you can find it, you’ll pay $1.50 an hour from 7 AM – 2 AM, or a flat $5 fee during special events. If you plan on staying in Wynwood for more than three hours, you will have to move your car to a new “parking zone.”

If you plan on spending the entire day, you will probably want to find a garage. Your closest option is the Midtown Miami North Block Garage at 3401 N Miami Ave, about 18 minutes away on foot. You can also try the Design District Lot at 175-187 NE 36th St.

A mural at the Wynwood Walls depicts three women wearing masks representing various animals.

How Long To Spend In Wynwood

How long you spend at the Wynwood Walls depends solely on what you want to do. Some people just want to see the most famous art while others really like to explore the area!

If you get in the car and just drive through the neighborhoods, you can easily see most of the murals from your vehicle in about 30 minutes to an hour. Keep in mind you’re just driving by, so you won’t get any pictures.

Two hours will be the perfect amount of time to get in, see the art, take pictures, and then make your way back to your car. But if you want to see more, we recommend allowing for five to six hours.

There are so many incredible shops and restaurants all through the district that are worth exploring. Allowing time for a meal, window-shopping, picture-taking, and admiring the art and gardens can easily take up your entire day!

After that, you’ll visit some of Wynwood’s most exclusive restaurants for private tours. The cuisine captures the culture of the neighborhood which you’ll taste as you go. You’ll eat the equivalent of a full lunch, so arrive hungry!

Tips For Visiting Wynwood Walls

Even though Wynwood has become more and more developed over the years since it opened in 2009, the area is not the safest at night. We advise going early in the day, at least while the sun is still up.

If you stay into the night, stick to the highly populated areas. You can also frequent the many restaurants and bars in the area. Just steer clear of walking through poorly-lit alleyways, especially if you’re alone.

It’s also best to approach the Wynwood Walls with an open mind. If you’re returning, don’t expect to see the same mural. The art is constantly changing, so there’s a good chance it’s already gone.

You should also come to the Wynwood Walls with an empty stomach. Some of the best restaurants in Miami are in the Wynwood district, as well as some of the best nightlife. Be prepared to feast and indulge in a few libations as well.

If you’re an Instagram influencer or just want to get a good picture, be careful of your outfit choice. A lot of the murals feature busy patterns, so wear solid colors (or even white) so you don’t clash with the art behind you!

While we explored parking options earlier in the post, you will have to walk a great deal to get to most of the best murals and restaurants. Unless you’re ready to scour the streets for a parking spot there, we recommend taking a Lyft or Uber to make things easier.

A woman poses for a selfie in front of the Wynwood Walls.

Best Things To Do In Wynwood

Wynwood art walk.

From 6 PM to 10 PM on the second Saturday of every month, you can attend the Wynwood Art Walk. A monthly festival that takes place throughout the neighborhood, we recommend planning your trip around this recurring event!

After you’ve spent the day exploring the streets, you can support the local artists whose work you’ve just admired. You can purchase original artwork, prints, pins, and more directly from the artists themselves!

While you’re mingling with the local talent, you can enjoy live music, walk through pop-up art galleries, or just sit in the garden with a beer! Make sure to check out the food trucks that line up during the event!

Museum of Graffiti

The Museum of Graffiti is Wynwood’s only museum. The only museum in the world dedicated completely to the art of graffiti, they celebrate the preservation and the process of creating street art.

Preserving graffiti’s history, the museum celebrates its history and emergence into design, fashion, and advertising. You can see this through an indoor and outdoor exhibition space. You can also find eleven more murals outside!

The Museum experience also includes a fine art gallery. Don’t forget to visit the world-class gift shop. You can pick up limited-edition merchandise and items created exclusively by the world’s most infamous graffiti artists.

Wynwood Walls Shop

It’s easy to lose a few hours in the Wynwood Walls Shop because there’s so much to see! Featuring merchandise from the current artists of the Walls, the shop’s wares are constantly changing.

There’s something for everyone at the Wynwood Walls Shop. You can find stickers, books, prints, pins, keychains, and magnets. You can even purchase apparel like hoodies, t-shirts, backpacks, and hats!

You can even find skateboard deck, hydro flasks, action figures, and incredibly stylish playing cards. Be prepared to empty your wallets, we promise you’re going to want to go crazy in here.

Hit up the Thrift Stores

Bargain hunters looking for unique finds and the best deals know that thrift stores are where it’s at! The Wynwood Walls are actually home to some of the best thrift stores and boutiques in all of Miami.

First hit Out of the Closet, which is a unique national chain whose proceeds benefit the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Here you’ll find gently used trinkets and apparel. You can also bring your prescriptions to the on-site pharmacy and get a free, confidential HIV test.

Then head to the Lotus House Chic Thrift Boutique where proceeds benefit the Lotus House Women and Children’s Center. The store is divided into two sections: vintage and thrift. If you’re looking for a pair of quirky earrings or a vintage armoire, Lotus House is your best bet.

If you still have some scratch to spend, head to The House of Findings. Just like its name suggests, you’re bound to find a unique piece here. Featuring vintage and up-cycled wares, this is the perfect place to find a piece of art to hang on that empty spot on your wall.

Where To Eat In Wynwood

Wynwood kitchen and bar.

The Wynwood Kitchen and Bar is an Arts District hot-spot you won’t want to miss on your tour of Wynwood Walls. With indoor and outdoor seating, the artwork of Shepard Fairey surrounds you as you dine.

Featuring delectable and innovative cuisine, a tapas style menu gives you the freedom to try a variety of dishes. Paired with house cocktails, artisanal beers, and an international wine list, you’ll be at one of the hippest dining destinations in Miami.

The kitchen makes Crispy Brussel Sprouts taste good, and the Bahn Mi is not to be missed. Alter even features vegan options like the mouth-watering Gnuddi and Watermelon and Vine-Ripened Tomato Salad.

“Alter” your perspective at 223 NW 23rd St, open every day from 12 PM – 9 PM.

Kush has won every award under the sun, from best restaurant, burger, key lime pie , chicken n’ waffles, veggie burger. When you get a taste of their food, you’ll understand why.

All of the food at Kush is sourced locally from Florida farms and made completely from scratch. We love the Bababooey Burger with caramelized apples and melty brie cheese. Don’t forget the Crab Cake Salad and the Baja Fish Tacos.

With one of the most incredible beer menus, Kush collaborates with local breweries to offer rare releases and craft beers exclusive to Kush. You can also attend many special events and participate in their monthly home brewers series!

Experience Kush at 2003 N Miami Ave, open on Sunday through Tuesday from 12 PM – 10 AM and Wednesday through Saturday from 12 PM – 11 AM.

A tour of the wynwood arts district in miami.

By Kara Franker

The Wynwood Arts District , named one of America's best hipster neighborhoods by Forbes Magazine, is like no other area in Miami -- or anywhere for that matter.

Developers transformed once lifeless warehouse buildings into a vibrant outdoor museum, featuring giant walls of graffiti-style murals . The formerly abandoned streets are now bustling with activity, drawing artists, visitors and hipsters alike.

So I teamed up with friend and fellow Miami journalist Shayne Benowitz to showcase Wynwood Art District for a new travel video produced by SPARK for VISIT FLORIDA .

Take a peek:

miami wynwood tour

The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the collection of artwork at Wynwood Walls , featuring murals by world-renowned street artists. Marité Iglesias, arts manager for Goldman Properties , gave Shayne and me a tour of the current collection of wall art in Wynwood Art District .

Unlike at most museums, you can actually go up and touch the art -- feel the texture and analyze the depth of the colors up close.

What are you waiting for? Get out there and explore this gem of a neighborhood for yourself. It's like nowhere else.

Wynwood Art Walk Miami

About wynwood art walk, wynwood tours since 2010, what we do at wynwood art walk miami.

Wynwood Art Walk Miami specializes in providing art tours in the Wynwood Art District, which is a constantly evolving art scene that sky-rocketed into international consciousness in the 2010s. We are changing our services to keep pace with the scene and provide up-to-date information on our tours, maintain contacts on the ground to better meet client needs while showcasing and employing local artists and other local talent.

GROUP TOURS/PRIVATE TOURS/GRAFFITI EXPERIENCES

We have an expansive schedule of public walking tours such as our Best of Wynwood Tour and Wynwood Graffiti Golf Cart Tour , and we provide customized private tours and graffiti painting events to families, reunions, bridal parties and more.

EVENT PLANNING/CORPORATE GROUPS/BRAND ACTIVATIONS

For your event needs or corporate meetings, we work with your group and utilize our on-the-ground contacts to find the right venue and bring your ideas into life including team-building with spray paint, live painting as entertainment, creating branded artwork, and enjoying local food. For brands interested in harnessing the draw of the art district with foot traffic rare in South Florida, we do scouting for space whether for a booth, a showcase in a gallery, or wall space for branded murals.

Call us at 305 814-9290, submit a form , or email us at [email protected] with your inquiry.

Our involvement in the art district goes back to about 2005 when the heart of the art district was along North Miami Avenue, and a burst of activity coalesced around Art Basel, which first came to Miami Beach in 2002. A local art space called Edge Zones hosted local talent for a period of weeks, connecting them to visiting art lovers and art buyers, and we started an online directory offering galleries, temporary art spaces, restaurants, and local community a platform. In 2008, we opened a small gallery space (currently the El Patio), experiencing first-hand being in the business of art as well as the fits and starts of the art district being born as the area hosted the monthly 2 nd Saturday Art Walk. Confused phone calls from people looking to understand the Art Walk gave us the idea of doing tours in the first place, which is how our company started nearly a decade ago. In the years since, we have grown with the art district, expanding and evolving our offerings but maintaining a focus on educating visitors, sharing our love for art, honoring the efforts of local artists and those who work with them. Our tours are unscripted, our tour guides are locals, each bringing their unique approach to their tours whether they are art lovers, artists, academics or a combination.

What is the Wynwood Art District?

Wynwood is a section of Miami just north of Downtown, south of the Design District, east of I-95, and west of Biscayne Boulevard. Its genesis from neglected warehouse and homeless shelter district to international hotspot mirrors revitalization efforts in SoHo (in NYC) and South Beach in Miami. What all three have in common is Tony Goldman, the late developer. Starting in the early 2000s a handful of galleries opened up in the area, which at one point mushroomed to over 60. As commercial establishments like restaurants moved in and gentrification intensified, many galleries chose to move out, yet an ever-wider area now sports murals from the simply tagged and amateurish to the studied, otherworldly, and breath-taking. Restaurants deserve a word as well as nearly all of them are unique (as in no chains) and serve top quality cuisine from meats to Asian to authentic Mexican and more.

General Wynwood Area

The main area of the Wynwood Art District is between 20 St & 36 St and from North Miami Ave to NW 6th Ave with NE 2nd Avenue being the main artery.

Street parking and various lots are located throughout the area. Wynwood Garage is at 311 NW 26th Street.

History of Wynwood

Wynwood – originally spelled Wyndwood – is an old inner city neighborhood of Miami surrounded by Edgewater, Overtown, Liberty City… Wynwood was built as a working class residential neighborhood, connected to the Garment District just south of it. It went through a period of neglect and was touched by racial riots. By the 2000s, artist studios were popping up, and as the neighboring Design District was starting to see rising values, developers became interested in Wynwood. The Wynwood Walls opened in 2009, and the gallery scene reached its zenith during the next 5 or so years with dozens of galleries opening and 2nd Saturday Wynwood Art Walks drawing ever growing crowds. As attendance grew, so did development, and with it came high rents that eventually drove out galleries. The area continues to grow, with multistory office and residential buildings now changing the character of the area and new restaurants opening regularly. However, the number of murals keeps growing, and it is as fun a destination as ever.

Neighborhoods

Non-stop energy and in-the-moment style are the hallmarks of Wynwood, Miami’s creative and cultural hub.

North of Downtown Miami and west of Miami Beach, a Greater Miami neighborhood that was once a collection of warehouses has been transformed in recent years into one of the world’s hippest hangouts. Full of eclectic restaurants, bars and shops, Wynwood also offers visitors countless opportunities to enjoy the best of international contemporary art, whether in galleries or simply on the street, where colorful murals make it a go-to place for Instagrammers.

A stroll along the main thoroughfare of Northwest 2nd Avenue and its side streets reveals all the things that make Wynwood famous. There are craft breweries like Cerveceria La Tropical alongside independent boutiques, taquerias, food halls and laid back bars such as Gramps that have outdoor spaces for some fun, al fresco. On any given day, you’ll find locals caffeinating at Panther Coffee before heading to neighborhood co-working spaces, or grabbing a bite at much-loved eateries including The Salty , Coyo Taco and Zak The Baker . Boutiques such as Frangipani and Wynwood Tribe carry made-in-Miami and international merchandise that will make a stylish memento of your Miami trip.

Wynwood is perhaps best known as a hub of contemporary and street art. Both serious and casual collectors are welcome at Wynwood’s many galleries, which sell pieces at all price points. Synonymous with the neighborhood are vibrant murals, which were originally commissioned by the neighborhood’s visionary developer, Tony Goldman, in the early 2000s. Years later, Wynwood’s renaissance is all but complete, while the outdoor gallery of striking art continues to evolve. While you can see murals throughout the neighborhood, the centerpiece here is the Wynwood Walls . Purchase timed tickets in advance to view more than 35 murals by world-renowned artists. As popular with locals as they are with visitors, the walls (indeed, Wynwood itself) offer a unique and memorable experience.

To get to Wynwood, explore Transportation options or use the Go Connect service by Miami-Dade Transit.

Our walking food tour of Miami’s Wynwood is an active, VIP adventure through town; the perfect way to see and taste the area in a single afternoon!

The Wynwood District is known for its foodie scene and street art.

Wynwood started to become a focal point for local artists all the way back in the 1980s, but it wasn’t until Tony Goldman opened  Wynwood Walls  to the world’s best street artists in 2009 that the street art culture spread like wildfire. And eventually the art took over the walls of the entire neighborhood. Any serious Wynwood tour must stop at Wynwood Walls, as we will.

We’ll also catch a few of the most notable murals displayed on some of Wynwood’s other walls along our route. But let’s not forget the food, because we know you love to eat and you probably chose this particular tour because you wanted to try some of Miami’s best bites without having to do all of the research yourself. So we’ve done the research, we’ve tried the food, and we know you are in for a special treat. We stop at several of the best local foodie havens that are the best, not only for Wynwood, but for Miami as a whole.

You’ll taste a variety of foods, some with traditional significance and some that are not so traditional, but will delight your taste buds nonetheless. For those who booked the VIP experience, you’ll enjoy some of our finest, local craft beers and cocktails. At the end of the tour, we hope to leave you full of local knowledge, great food and drink, and fond memories of the fun we had together.

What to Expect

You’ll meet your entertaining and energetic guide who will give you an introduction to Miami’s epic history. Then we’re off on our adventure to enjoy some of the most popular restaurants and graffiti art Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood has to offer, including entry into the world famous Wynwood Walls.

Taco your time.

Begin your journey at Coyo Taco, winner of several Best Taco of Miami awards. Learn about the history of this neighborhood-shifting establishment in the heart of Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. You can’t go wrong with the corn tortilla-wrapped goodness at this local favorite. Coyo Taco prides itself on fresh ingredients, and interesting versions of this much-loved Mexican street food. After all, shouldn’t we enjoy some street food with our street art? For those purchasing the VIP Craft Drink Package, we’ll have our first signature cocktail here.

Stroll across NW 2nd Avenue, Wynwood’s main strip, to Miami’s favorite sandwich shop.

Most of our walk is on one of Miami’s main thoroughfares, NW 2nd Avenue. We’ll stop to check out some street art on the way to French-inspired sandwich haven, La Sandwicherie, before indulging in one of La Sandwicherie’s famous sandwiches. La Sandwicherie features bread delivered 4x daily from a local bakery. Their delectable French baguette is piled with the most wholesome and tasty ingredients. You’ll learn the story behind this local favorite, and taste why locals flock to La Sandwicherie both day and night.

As we depart La Sandwicherie, we’ll check out a mural with a purpose, #freelolita, by street art duo, Clandestinos, and learn why this mural has endured for so many years, while other walls have been painted over many times.

Must be the music.

1-800-LUCKY is a little bit food and a little bit music. Imagine a 10,000 square foot Asian street food court with an independently-owned record store, and an outdoor dance floor that goes full-blown nightclub after dark. We’ll check out the record shop, sample tasty dumplings, and listen to some flavorful music on their always-on sound system. Every once in awhile, we even catch a daytime DJ as a bonus!

More art, please!

Between stops, it’s art, art, and more art! Wynwood has literally thousands of pieces of art, and our knowledgeable guides will provide an insider’s perspective on some of the pieces and the artists behind them. We sometimes even bump into artists mid-mural on our tours, and occasionally get a chance to chat with them too. Wynwood is an ever-changing tapestry, and no two tours are alike, as there is almost always something fresh to talk about.

Not your standard pizza joint.

This is a food tour so we are going to continue to sample only the best foods along the route. This time we stop at the Wynwood outpost of one of the most iconic pizza joints in New York City, Joe’s Pizza. For decades, this NYC institution has dominated the Big Apple’s pizza scene, and now Miami gets to enjoy their perfect marriage of dough, sauce and cheese. New York’s influence on Miami is well known and includes the food scene. Joe’s is arguably New York’s top pizza joint, and people from all over the world, including more celebrities than we can count, have flocked to this institution. We will sample their signature cheese pizza slice which is full of flavor and has a thin, crisp crust.

Cookies as an art form.

Save room for dessert as we walk to Night Owl Cookies, founded by Andrew Gonzalez as a 20 year-old college student. We’ll sample one of his award-winning, Latin-themed cookie creations that got him named to the Forbes “30 Under 30” list at age 29. As we depart, of course, we’ll check out more amazing street art!

Enjoy some bites and brews.

When we have guests on our VIP Craft Drink Package, we stop at one of two notable Miami breweries, both with Latino and tropical roots. We’ll visit either Veza Sur, the maker of the official beer of the NFL Miami Dolphins, or Cervecería La Tropical, serving a Cuban original beer recipe dating back to 1888. We’ll have our last sample of food, and a refreshing, locally-crafted beer for those on the VIP Craft Drink Package. Both establishments offer outdoor seating to take advantage of our usually great Miami weather.

Ending the tour on a high note, Wynwood Walls.

We finish the tour with art-only, and one of the highlights of the tour. Wynwood Walls is known as the place that ignited the Wynwood street art movement, eventually making Wynwood the most densely graffiti-tagged area in the world. Opened in 2009 by visionary developer Tony Goldman, Wynwood Walls features striking street art from the best, international talents, inspiring street artists to spray the rest of the walls of Wynwood. Your guide will choose some of the most significant pieces at Wynwood Walls, and give you an in-depth look at the artist, the intention, and anything else notable about the work.

The walking food tour will conclude with some suggestions for the rest of your visit and other great places to eat in the Miami area.
