PGA Tour stops in each state you can play

next stop for pga tour

Unlike other professional sports where the fields of play are reserved for competitors only, many of professional golf’s annual stops are open to the public. There is a certain intrigue to playing the same courses that the best players in the world tackle—trying to replicate the shots that produced dramatic triumphs on the biggest stage.

During its 2021-22 season, the PGA Tour will travel to private and public tracks across 22 different states. This collection includes the 21 courses across nine states that will host a PGA Tour event this season and are open for public play.

TPC Scottsdale (Stadium)

tpc-scottsdale-stadium-fourteenth-hole-12552

Even after the WMPO is complete, the facility leaves up the giant grandstands surrounding the par-3 16th, so public golfers can get a taste of the experience—minus the 20,000 rowdy fans. The Stadium course features challenging greens and culminates with a memorable finishing stretch.

California:

Silverado resort and spa (north).

Situated in the heart of the Wine Country, the North course at Silverado Resort and Spa annually hosts the PGA Tour’s Fortinet Championship, which kicked off the tour’s 2021-22 schedule. Stay at the resort for the opportunity to play this Johnny Miller-redesigned track that features narrow, oak-lined fairways.

PGA West (Stadium)

pga-west-stadium-seventeenth-hole-13806

John Henebry

Annually hosting a PGA Tour event in January, the Stadium course is known for its risk-reward challenges, plus the massive 18-foot high bunker on the par-5 16th hole as well as the island-green par-3 17th hole.

PGA West (Nicklaus Tournament)

pga-west-nicklaus-tournament-course-fifteenth-hole-13807

The Nicklaus Tournament course at PGA West is part of the annual rotation of courses for the PGA Tour event. The Nicklaus-designed layout is forgiving off the tee, demands precise approach shots and features two island greens.

Torrey Pines (South)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2021/6/torrey pines south.jpg

Ranked No. 42 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, the South course is home to eight of Tiger Woods’ career wins on the PGA Tour, including the 2008 U.S. Open, his 14th major victory. Perhaps best known for the dramatic finishes in its two U.S. Opens (2008 and 2021), the South course annually hosts the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Torrey Pines (North)

Mark Degnan

The North course at Torrey Pines is used (along with the South) during the first two rounds of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open. Renovated in 2016 by Tom Weiskopf, the North is more playable than the South but offers equally (if not superior) scenic ocean views.

Pebble Beach Golf Links

Pebble-Beach-Golf-Links-No-6-8-Joann-Dost.jpg

Perhaps the greatest meeting of land and sea, Pebble Beach has been No. 1 on Golf Digest’s ranking of America’s best public courses since the inception of our public list in 2000. In addition to the annual PGA Tour stop, Pebble Beach is slated to host numerous USGA championships in the coming decades, including the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open and 2027 U.S. Open.

Spyglass Hill

4th Hole, Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Pebble Beach, CA

Evan Schiller

Inside the top 10 of our public ranking, Spyglass Hill is one of three courses in the rotation for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Weaving through the majestic Monterey pines through the middle of the round, and the giant sand dunes on the first five holes, Spyglass Hill—ranked No. 51 on our latest ranking of America’s 100 Greatest—might be Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s best work.

Tahoe Mountain Club (Old Greenwood)

Since 2020, the Old Greenwood course at Tahoe Mountain Club has hosted the Barracuda Championship on the PGA Tour. This Jack Nicklaus design plays among 600 acres of towering pines in the High Sierras.

PGA National (Champion)

pga-national-champion-third-hole-2106

PGA National Resort

Routinely one of the toughest courses on tour, The Champion course at PGA National is home to The Bear Trap—the demanding three-hole stretch (Nos. 15-17) that requires precise iron play. With wind often playing a factor and water lurking on many holes, The Champion is a true ball-striking test.

Bay Hill Club and Lodge

Orlando-Bay-Hill-Club-Lodge-Hole-17.jpg

There’s no shortage of history at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge—with its ties to Mr. Palmer and Woods’ eight wins at the annual PGA Tour stop. Stay at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge and you can play the Champion and Challenger nines, where the Arnold Palmer Invitational is played. It offers a stern test with deep rough and imposing lakes lurking.

TPC Sawgrass (Stadium)

tpc-sawgrass-17.png

Home to The Players, one of professional golf’s premier events, the Stadium course at TPC Sawgrass boasts one of the most recognizable par 3s in the world at the island-green 17th.

Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead)

Innisbrook’s Copperhead course, the host of the Valspar Championship, offers a unique taste of Florida golf with its tight, tree-lined fairways and rolling terrain. The course is a tough ball-striking challenge with a demanding three-hole finish—known as the Snake Pit—that often makes for dramatic finishes to the annual PGA Tour stop.

Sea Island Resort (Seaside)

Sea-Island-Golf-Club-Seaside-5-6-7-Staff.jpg

Stephen Szurlej

Ranked No. 36 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, the Seaside course at Sea Island Resort hosts a PGA Tour event in the fall. The layout plays along the Atlantic Ocean and features large clamshell bunkers and exposed sand dunes off many fairways.

Sea Island Resort (Plantation)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/course-photos-for-places-to-play/Sea Island Plantation12_DJI_0135_.jpg

The Plantation course was recently redesigned by Sea Island resident Davis Love III and his brother, Mark, recapturing the traditional profile of Walter Travis’ 1928 original nine-hole course. The drivable par-4 10th features a green guarded by water and a landing area protected by a principal-nose bunker.

Kapalua (Plantation)

Each year, Kapalua’s Plantation course kicks off the PGA Tour’s calendar-year schedule with its wide, dramatic fairways and stunning views. The Plantation course is ranked No. 23 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and closes with a 663-yard par 5 that is the longest finishing hole on any Golf Digest nationally ranked course.

TPC Deere Run

The site of Jordan Spieth’s first PGA Tour win, TPC Deere Run annually hosts the John Deere Classic. Located in the Quad Cities just over two hours from Chicago, the course was built on the site of a former Arabian horse farm and plays along a rolling landscape.

TPC Louisiana

As home of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans since 2007, this championship golf course has been described as “Sawgrass on steroids.” Designed by Pete Dye and influenced by PGA Tour professionals Steve Elkington and Kelly Gibson, this 7,400 yard par-72 offers a challenging mix of fast greens, hidden bunkers, large cypress trees and water.

South Carolina:

Harbour town golf links.

The Sea Pines Resort/Rob Tipton

Known for the red-and-white-striped lighthouse behind the 18th green and for hosting the RBC Heritage the week after the Masters, Harbour Town demands accuracy with narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens. Ranked No. 25 on Golf Digest’s America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, this Pete Dye design plays mostly inland before 17 and 18 emerge with views of Calibogue Sound.

Memorial Park Golf Course

Keyur Khamar

A significant renovation was completed by Tom Doak (in collaboration with Brooks Koepka) to transform the old municipal course at Memorial Park into a layout worthy of being a PGA Tour venue. The revitalized course, now armed with Doak signature green complexes, has hosted the Houston Open since 2020.

TPC San Antonio (Oaks)

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/course-photos-for-places-to-play/TPC San Antonio Oaks 16.jpg

Host of the Valero Texas Open, the Oaks course at TPC San Antonio is Golf Digest’s top-ranked public course in the Lone Star State. The Greg Norman design (with an assist from Sergio Garcia) tips out at 7,435 yards and incorporates some rocky terrain and native grasses nicely in the routing.

What to know about the PGA tour stop next week in Fort Worth from tickets, parking to food

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Some of the best golfers in the world are teeing off in Fort Worth next week.

The PGA Tour is stopping in Cowtown next week for the Charles Schwab Challenge at the Colonial Country Club. The action gets underway from May 22 to 28.

Since 1946, the Colonial Country Club has hosted the annual PGA Tour tournament in Fort Worth. Until 2019, the tournament was called the Colonial National Invitational.

Golf fans can expect a week full of events, including the tournament which starts on May 25. The Charles Schwab Challenge is a major stop on the PGA Tour with $8.7 million in prize money.

Here’s everything you need to know — from tickets, parking to food — about the tournament in Fort Worth:

Schedule for the Charles Schwab challenge in Fort Worth

A week full of events kick off Monday and lasts until the weekend.

May 22, Monday: Ben Hogan pro-am for players and guests only. Not open to the public.

May 23, Tuesday: Executive Women’s Day with former professional golfer Annika Sörenstam. Not open to the public.

May 24, Wednesday: Colonial pro-am for players and guests. Open to the public.

May 25, Thursday: First round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Open to the public.

May 26, Friday: Second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Open to the public.

May 27, Saturday: Third round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Open to the public.

May 28, Sunday: Final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge. Open to the public.

Gates for the Colonial Country Club open at 6 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Are tickets still available for the Charles Schwab Challenge?

Yes, tickets are still available for every public event.

Tickets for the Colonial pro-am start at $55 a piece. A $55 ticket is also available for the final round on Sunday. However, if you want to attend rounds one through three, it’s a different ticket.

A $94 “any one day grounds ticket” can be used for one day between Wednesday and Sunday. This means if you want to attend rounds on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, the $94 ticket is what you will purchase. If you want to attend rounds on both Friday and Saturday, you would need to purchase two $94 tickets.

But if Wednesday and Sunday are the only days you plan to attend, stick with the cheaper $55 ticket. VIP tickets are also available for Thursday through Sunday and start at $325 and up.

Purchase tickets here.

Is parking included in the golf tournament ticket?

No, parking is its own separate expense.

There are three tiers available for parking at the Colonial Country Club:

Rockwood Lane parking ($25) at 1522 Rockwood Lane — Park your car in the parking lot and get shuttled to the Rogers Road entrance.

Silver parking ($50/$75) at 3571 Bellaire Dr. N — Park your car in a covered garage then be shuttled to the Colonial Poolside Plaza entrance.

Gold valet parking ($150) at 3735 Country Club Circle — Drive to the front door of the Colonial Country Club.

Parking passes are only good for the day they’re purchased. To purchase parking, visit here .

The Rockwood Lane and Silver parking passes are digital only, while the Gold valet is a physical tag that will be mailed to you upon purchase.

What’s on the menu at Colonial Country Club?

The Colonial has a plethora of options to keep you fueled and hydrated while watching the world’s best golfers.

On-course concessions for breakfast include brisket, egg and cheese tacos. Lunch could be a grilled sirloin burger, pulled pork sandwich, hot dog, crispy chicken sandwich, turkey burger and more. For drinks — there’s beer, wine, soda and cocktails.

VIP guests with village tickets can chow down on daily specials from baby back ribs and enchiladas, to pizza and steak. The open bar at the village operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily as well.

The “food truck fairway” is a chance to taste food from local Fort Worth restaurants such as Heim Barbecue, Salsa Limon, Buffalo Bros, Melt Ice Creams and Fletcher’s Original Corny Dogs. The food trucks are located at hole four and open Thursday through Sunday.

What top pros are competing in the Charles Schwab Challenge?

Over 100 PGA Tour golfers will compete in Fort Worth next week.

Only two of the top 10 golfers in the world are making the Texas trip, including North Texas’ own Jordan Spieth . The Dallas-born and tenth-ranked golfer in the world, has played in but never won the Fort Worth tournament.

The other top 10 golfer playing in the tournament is Scottie Scheffler, the current number two. A full list of the tournament field can be found here .

All aboard! Next stop: the PGA Tour.

Joohyung Kim, the 20-year-old Korean who goes by Tom (after the popular kids’ character, Thomas the Tank Engine), locked up his Tour card for next season, and he did so in impressive fashion. Kim shot 9-under 63 Sunday at Detroit Golf Club to finish solo seventh at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and earn enough non-member FedExCup points to clinch permanent membership for the 2022-23 season.

“It means everything,” Kim said. “Every day I’ve played golf, I thought about playing on the PGA Tour, it was nothing else. Today it could get a little emotional tonight, but it’s definitely been a dream, it’s been a road and hopefully next season I’ll be out here full-time.”

In just eight Tour starts, including this week’s RMC and three majors, Kim has two top-7 finishes and three other top-25s. He also placed solo 23 rd at the U.S. Open and entered this week ranked No. 39 in the OWGR.

Full-field scores from Rocket Mortgage Classic

Already a six-time winner in Asia, Kim earned special temporary status on Tour earlier this season, but now he’s done something that Matt Fitzpatrick and Joaquin Niemann both did in recent years: earn their Tour cards by finishing with more non-member points than No. 125 on the current season’s FedExCup points list.

World No. 39 calls in sick to PGA Tour. Is LIV Golf his next stop?

  • Follow on Twitter

Adrian Meronk last week at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Getty Images

Adrian Meronk called in sick. At about 9 a.m. ET Wednesday, he posted the news to his Instagram story, along with what appeared to be a picture of his data from Whoop, a fitness tracker.

Around that time, his place of work also confirmed that he wouldn’t be coming in.

“Adrian Meronk WD before the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open,” tweeted the communications department of the PGA Tour. “Erik Barnes is now in.”

And then came the speculation.

Followed by the reports.

Meronk may be out. He may be off to LIV Golf.

He may not be alone, either.

As first reported by the Times’ Tom Kershaw and later reported by Sports Illustrated’s Bob Harig , Meronk will join LIV ahead of the Saudi-backed league’s season-opener next week — meaning he will likely be suspended from the PGA Tour, without never having played a round as an official Tour member. The 30-year-old who grew up in Poland received his Tour card last year after finishing in the top 10 in the season-long points race on the DP World Tour.

It was there where Meronk won three times last season, and, while he was left off the European Ryder Cup team , he was voted by his peers as the DP World Tour’s player of the year. Last week, he finished second at the DP World Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic , and on Monday, he moved to a personal-best 39th in the world golf rankings .

Then, according to Golf Digest’s Evin Priest , Meronk flew out of Dubai, checked into a hotel — and withdrew from the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open ahead of Wednesday’s first round. Kershaw reported that Meronk’s agent would not comment, while Meronk posted the Whoop picture to his Instagram story, along with a post that read: “Unfortunately I have to withdraw from @farmersinsopen due to illness.”

Xander Schauffele

Why is Xander Schauffele mentioned in LIV Golf rumors? He has theory

But later Wednesday, Kershaw and Harig then reported that Meronk would join LIV, as a part of the Martin Kaymer-captained Cleeks team.

Notably, though, there are additional spots open on LIV, including on the potential team guided by Jon Rahm, who surprised the golf world early last month and left the PGA Tour. And according to both Kershaw and Harig, LIV may be making a run at a player who just last week offered a pledge — though it sounded lukewarm — to stay on the PGA Tour:

World No. 16 Tyrrell Hatton.

Hatton memorably teamed with Rahm twice last year as part of the winning European Ryder Cup squad, and his name has surfaced in regards to joining the Spaniard with LIV. Last week, though, with the Scotsman’s Martin Dempster , Hatton had this exchange:

“I’d say there’s several people who have had conversations,” Hatton said of LIV talks. “I think that’s part and parcel of golf at the moment, but I’m quite happy playing the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.”

Has he had those conversations?

“I’ve just said that,” Hatton told Dempster. “There’s a lot of people who have and I don’t think there is anything to shy away from.”

But is he staying put?

“As of right now, yeah,” Hatton told Dempster.

Adrian Meronk was on the outside looking in for Team Europe.

‘From shock to anger’: Ryder Cup snub searching for answers after emotional call

Hatton also played in Dubai last week, tying for 31st, but he’s not in the field for the Farmers Insurance Open. On Wednesday, officials at the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Open said that Hatton had committed to that event, to be played in two weeks.

Of course, all of this goes down as the PGA Tour and the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund — LIV Golf’s backer — continue to negotiate a funding deal . Now, the Meronk and Hatton reports at least raise some questions, mainly:

— Does this indicate at all where the negotiations are headed?

— Does this mean at all that LIV Golf will be around for a while?

For now, we know this:

— The Farmers Insurance Open’s second round starts Thursday. Meronk won’t be there.

— LIV’s season opener starts next Friday in Mexico. Unless he’s still sick, Meronk will reportedly be there. Hatton might be too.

  • Every PGA Tour channel
  • Unlimited cloud DVR
  • ESPN+ and Disney+ included
  • Small sports channel lineup
  • Only two simultaneous streams allowed

Hulu + Live TV is the best TV service for watching the PGA Tour because it has every tour channel and a user-friendly design. Starting at $76.99 a month, Hulu + Live TV also includes ESPN+ at no extra cost—meaning you can watch expanded PGA Tour Live content within the Hulu app. No other TV service offers that much PGA Tour coverage in one place.

Another advantage of Hulu + Live TV is its intuitive interface, which makes finding and watching golf a breeze. The platform offers a personalized guide that displays upcoming and current events, so you can easily navigate to the PGA Tour coverage you want. Additionally, Hulu + Live TV offers unlimited cloud DVR storage—allowing you to watch golf on your schedule.

TV fans, in general, will appreciate Hulu + Live TV for its well-balanced channel lineup. Not only are there key channels for watching sports, but there are also several important entertainment and news networks. You’ll also have access to The CW , which shows LIV Golf League tournaments.

Exclusive PGA Tour Live content: ESPN+

  • 35+ PGA Tour tournaments
  • Multiple video feeds
  • Inexpensive pricing
  • No traditional ESPN networks included
  • Limited LPGA coverage

You may already have access to a TV provider with the main PGA Tour channels. If so, you can still level up your golf coverage with a standalone ESPN+ subscription.

At only $10.99 a month, ESPN+ carries over 35 PGA Tour events each year through its PGA Tour Live programming. Every tournament covered on ESPN+ comes with four unique live feeds—giving you featured holes and groups for a well-rounded viewing experience.

Beyond live coverage, ESPN+ comes with on-demand replays and original series like America’s Caddie . You’ll also have access to many major league sports and college athletics. But most men’s and women’s college golf appears on Golf Channel and Peacock.

Live NBC Sports coverage: Peacock

  • Every live PGA Tour broadcast from NBC and Golf Channel
  • GolfPass content included
  • No live PGA Tour content from USA Network
  • Limited original content

Like ESPN+, Peacock is an inexpensive way to watch many PGA Tour events. It doesn’t have the featured video feeds found on ESPN+, but every minute of the PGA Tour that airs on NBC and Golf Channel also streams on Peacock. That’s more than 450 hours of annual coverage for as low as $5.99 a month—a golf-clap-worthy deal.

Peacock is also home to many golf-centric series and documentaries—much more than any other streaming service. Its 24/7 GolfPass channel is especially fun to watch when tournaments aren’t happening. Launched in partnership with Rory McIlroy in 2021, the channel shows instructional videos, travel guides, and original series featuring top golfers and celebrities.

Unfortunately, live golf airing on USA Network doesn’t stream on Peacock. And viewers with access to NBC and Golf Channel may feel like Peacock is unnecessary. But some studio coverage, LPGA tournaments, and college golf competitions stream exclusively on Peacock. It’s also the home to every minute of the Summer Olympics —which, since 2016, involves both men’s and women’s golf.

Pro tip: GolfPass offers a subscription service for golf enthusiasts looking to improve their skills out on the course. While it’s less about watching golf and more about playing golf, new GolfPass members get 12 months of Peacock Premium for free.

Cheapest: OTA Antenna

*CableTV.com utilizes paid Amazon links. Amazon.com Price; $39.99 (as of 4/12/24 9:15 a.m. CT). Read full disclaimer .

  • Local TV coverage
  • Low, one-time price
  • No monthly charges
  • No DVR included
  • No technical support

An over-the-air (OTA) antenna is the cheapest way to watch the PGA Tour because it allows you to access local broadcast channels for free. Possible antenna channels include CBS and NBC , which air some of the most crucial stages of the PGA Tour.

To verify the antenna channels in your area, enter your address on the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Reception Map . The tool will display every channel available in your city and the corresponding tower distance—helping you determine the required antenna range.

If you’re new to the antenna game, the Mohu Leaf 50  is an excellent option for suburbanites. Its 60-mile range should allow most users to pick up CBS and NBC. But we recommend visiting our Best OTA Antennas page to browse more antenna options.

How can I watch the PGA Tour for free?

To watch the PGA Tour for free, try using an OTA antenna to pick up CBS and NBC stations in your area. You can also take advantage of free trial offers from live TV streaming services or catch select coverage through event websites and social media channels. For instance, you can watch the Masters Tournament free on Masters.com and the Masters app.

Another fun way to watch free PGA Tour coverage is through Pluto TV . The streaming service includes a 24/7 PGA Tour channel that shows clips and highlights from past events.

Jack Nicklaus Doesn't Love the Memorial Tournament's New Spot on the PGA Tour Calendar

Bob harig | jun 4, 2024.

Jack Nicklaus's Memorial Tournament is usually played right after Memorial Day weekend.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Jack Nicklaus wanted to do right by the PGA Tour. So he went along with the plan to move his Memorial Tournament to the week before the U.S. Open, even if it was something he would prefer not to do.

Now in its 49th year, Nicklaus’s tournament that was first played at Muirfield Village Golf Club in 1976 has traditionally—but not always—been played two weeks prior to the U.S. Open and in the week following Memorial Day.

The PGA Tour sought to move it as part of its signature event series. And Nicklaus said it’s a matter that will continue to be discussed.

“We would prefer the other week,” Nicklaus said Tuesday during a news conference in advance of the tournament. “However, we are here this week because the Tour asked us to help them out. They said they had a thing they wanted to do and that the players had asked for and that would we help it out, and we said yes, that we would do that this week.

“But we said we would review it after this tournament and we'll figure out how we're going to settle the schedule after that, and I said that discussion is under way.”

The Memorial is one of eight $20 million signature events the Tour put in place for this year with a qualification process that sees preceding events as one of the ways to get a spot in the smaller fields.

The Charles Schwab Challenge and the RBC Canadian Open kept a separate FedEx Cup points list for the top five players not otherwise qualified to earn their way into the Memorial field.

The idea, also, was to not leave regular events “stranded” between two signature events or a major championship. The Travelers Championship, the last signature event of the year, will follow the U.S. Open.

Nicklaus, 84, said that presented a problem for him personally. The Golden Bear, who won 18 major championships among his 73 PGA Tour titles, always preferred an off week prior to a major.

“Let's put it this way. When I played, I would rarely play a week before any major championship,” Nicklaus said. “So I'm asked to be part of putting on a golf tournament in a week that I would never play. That, to me, is the essential part from my standpoint.”

Although the Memorial name is used to signify honoring a player in the game—this year it is LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famer Juli Inkster—Nicklaus said that date has often been tied to the holiday as well.

“Yesterday, was normally a very big day gallery-wise for us because it was Memorial Day, and we had maybe a thousand people here yesterday,” he said. “From the sponsor's standpoint, I think that they get into board meetings and kids' graduations and so forth, so that's maybe not as advantageous.

“But that won't make any difference. We're going to have a good tournament this week either way, in spite of all the different things. And as I say, we did that as a favor and the Tour asked us to do that, and we said yes. So we've always been a supporter of the Tour. We want to try to continue to support what is best for the Tour, but we also want to support what's best for the Memorial Tournament. So that is to be determined.”

The Tour has said it will take this summer to review the signature events. Scheduling will be studied as well as field sizes. The original intent was to have fields capped at 80 players, which has happened only at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Most have been in the low 70s and could be filled out.

How a change to accommodate proper qualification as well as not leaving tournaments alone on the calendar would also have to be considered.

Will the PGA Tour, PIF make a deal? A year later it’s still uncertain

Will the PGA Tour, PIF make a deal? A year later it’s still uncertain

It’s been one year since the shocking announcement of a framework agreement between the PGA Tour and PIF (the owners of LIV Golf), the monumental deal that ended litigation between the competing men’s pro golf tours and proposed a new business entity with the Saudis potentially investing billions into what has become PGA Tour Enterprises.

It was far from an actual deal, though. It was, in actuality, an agreement to stop the lawsuits and simply negotiate in good faith.

In the past year, deadlines have been extended. The United States government held an inquiry into the potential union. Players have taken on power. Key figures on June 6, 2023 have either stepped down or seen their influence wane. A new investment group, led by American sport owners, emerged. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan went from the man with the most power to players calling for his resignation to firmly back in control. All while players like Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay and Jordan Spieth have taken on powerful roles. Still, few seem to know where any of this is heading.

So where are we a year on from the June 6 bombshell ? Let’s try to cut through the noise and explain where things stand.

The change in power

A “PGA Tour policy board” may mean nothing to you. It shouldn’t. But know the policy board decides almost everything for the PGA Tour. And there’s no better way to begin to detail the chaotic past year than the shuffling of seats on the board.

A year ago, investment banking legend Jimmy Dunne, popular with players for his willingness to connect them with the corporate world, was the key outside force on the board. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy was balancing being one of golf’s biggest superstars and the most powerful among the five player-directors on the board. He was the PGA Tour’s most effective communicator, repeatedly denouncing LIV.

Well, when the June 6 announcement happened, it sent the golf world into a tizzy. For starters, it was all done in complete secrecy, so on a tour where the players are also essentially the owners, they had no say. Additionally, players who spent the past year turning down massive sums of money from the Saudis and defending the tour were livid that the tour just legitimized LIV and they still didn’t get the payday . Monahan and Dunne, the former secretly deputizing the latter to initiate talks with PIF, went from the leaders to the bad guys in many players’ eyes.

The players wanted more of a say. They wanted more voting power, insisting on an extra voting seat to be added specifically for Woods. They also campaigned to add former tour player turned investment banker Joe Ogilvie as “liaison director.” Suddenly the players were not just more engaged — they had voting power.

next stop for pga tour

The narrative became that the Cantlay camp fought for more money for the biggest stars, while McIlroy’s side wanted the money spread throughout the tour, among other disagreements like any potential return for LIV players and a more global golf tour. Eventually, McIlroy resigned from the board. Spieth, who reportedly sides with Cantlay and Woods, took McIlroy’s spot.

Since then, McIlroy has dramatically softened his stance on LIV and campaigned for the sport to unify and bring the best players together. He’s even criticized comments from board members like Spieth and Cantlay publicly. So when board member Webb Simpson (aligned with McIlroy) asked to resign in April and have McIlroy take his place, the powers that be rejected that move. Whether it was vendetta or procedure, the impact was the same — McIlroy was instead added to the PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee that negotiates with LIV.

Within 12 days of McIlroy’s failed return, two more board members in favor of a deal with PIF resigned, Dunne and investment banker Mark Flaherty. Dunne cited players taking control of board voting and “no meaningful progress” toward a deal with PIF.

“I think things are, unfortunately, put in a really bad light right now,” Spieth said last month, “and I think things are actually in a really, really good place, based on what I know, which is quite a lot in this situation.”

LIV did not stop

When the June 6th announcement happened, it was argued the PGA Tour and Monahan had the power. PIF would invest billions into the newly created PGA Tour Enterprises and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan would be chairman and get a seat on the policy board, but Monahan would be CEO of the new venture and have control over LIV’s future. That was met with skepticism, as many argued the man with the money actually controls things, but it was sold as PIF just wanted a seat at the table in professional golf and everyone got what they wanted.

By the fall, there was little actual movement toward a deal and the PGA Tour had made it clear it was actually seeking other investment opportunities — more on that in a second. There was deserved doubt of anything happening by the original Dec. 31 deadline. So in late November, it was major news when rumors circulated about LIV negotiating with the reigning Masters champ, Jon Rahm . He was widely considered the first or second-best player in the world, and many wondered if LIV pursuing Rahm was to put pressure on the PGA Tour. Rahm admitted months later he thought signing, for hundreds of millions of dollars, would expedite negotiations and bring the sport back together.

No such thing has happened yet. No deal was done by Dec. 31, and both sides agreed to extend the deadline. LIV has continued to add executives in recent weeks with new hires from Pepsi and the Philadelphia 76ers while adding office spaces in New York and London.

PGA Tour added new investors

If Rahm was LIV’s key bargaining chip, the PGA Tour’s leverage was to add outside investment. On Jan. 31, the tour officially launched PGA Tour Enterprises backed by a $3 billion commitment from Strategic Sports Group , a consortium of major investors in professional sports like John Henry, Arthur Blank and Steve Cohen, among others. The deal made players actual owners in the sport, with $750 million in equity distributed to contributing players (past and present) based on value added to the tour.

The challenge of this investment was understanding if it signaled a move toward a deal or the tour ensuring it didn’t “need” the Saudis. Some argued it was the tour pushing PIF out. Others argued private equity investment expects a return and those investors would want a deal unifying the sport. SSG investors have not spoken publicly to provide transparency but Ogilvie told Golfweek that he believes SSG “committed with the hope that there would be another investor.”

Spieth was asked his thoughts on needing PIF the week before the announcement and said, “I don’t think it’s needed. The idea is that we have a strategic partner that allows the PGA Tour to go forward the way that it’s operating right now without anything else, with the option of other investors.”

A week later, SSG investors and PGA Tour representatives reportedly traveled to Saudi Arabia to meet with Al-Rumayyan. In March, the parties (including players on the policy board) met again at Woods’ home in the Bahamas. Members involved said it was more of a pleasant, well-intentioned greeting and no major movement happened toward a deal.

next stop for pga tour

What about Jay Monahan?

As recently as December, board members asked Monahan to resign from his place as PGA Tour commissioner. He completely lost the players’ trust after the June 6 announcement, and after Rahm left it appeared he was losing more and more control of the situation.

Then, with allies like Dunne and Flaherty leaving and the possibility of another board member Ed Herlihy departing when his term is up this fall, it was reasonable to wonder if Monahan was on his way out. McIlroy and Justin Thomas defended Monahan, while others like Xander Schauffele admitted Monahan has “a long way to go.” The tricky thing with Monahan is people have always said he’s great one-on-one and great with sponsors and investors. It’s just on the big stages and podiums that he appears so unconvincing.

So where does this leave a deal?

It’s never felt more unclear. The answer might really be that both sides are preparing for the possibility of no deal while simultaneously hoping to get one done.

From the outside looking in, it appears there’s been very little movement and many of the key figures in favor of a deal have been marginalized. Others argue that there’s far more happening than people know and it’s just going to take time to figure out what this future looks like.

There are hang-ups, like the possibility of a “global tour” and the future of LIV. Different possibilities from “AFC-NFC” style crossover tournaments to an elevated Champions League -like tour across the world have been suggested. Taking the sport to a more global place has been a key focus for LIV, and McIlroy is a fan of that path. Many on the PGA Tour side are reluctant to commit to that sort of schedule, preferring the United States-centric series. Also, there’s the conversation of whether or not to invite LIV defectors back to PGA Tour events, and some factions on tour are adamantly against it.

Any deal would also require government oversight. Sports Business Journal reported earlier this year that Department of Justice approval could take more than a year, making any sort of unification years away.

There’s far more that we don’t know than we do, with most key figures sticking to generalities and vague sentiments about hoping a deal gets done. We do not truly know what might happen with the DOJ. We don’t really know who wants a deal and who doesn’t. It’s all a game of sorting through clues and attempting to create meaning.

PGA Tour, Jay Monahan

Say farewell to the Barbasol shaving can tee box markers.

The PGA Tour has found a replacement for its annual Kentucky golf tournament.

Reports suggest the Tour and Louisville-based ISCO Industries inked a four-year contract to become the title sponsor, per Sports Business Journal’s Josh Carpenter.

The @PGATOUR has a new title sponsor for its Kentucky event, with Louisville-based ISCO Industries signing on through 2027. The ISCO Championship is July 11-14, opposite the Genesis Scottish Open: https://t.co/nYtruHThIW — Josh Carpenter (@JoshACarpenter) June 5, 2024

Barbasol has held this position since 2018, and their contract expired in 2023. This year, the tournament is in Nicholasville, Ky., July 11-14. It is the opposite field event for the co-sanctioned PGA and DP World Tour, the Genesis Scottish Open.

Reports stated that no financial terms were disclosed to the public. However, sources suggested this annual event brings in $8 to 10 million.

This tournament was the final event without a sponsor for the 2024 season.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan is not done negotiating sponsorship deals, though. Multiple title sponsors have likely pulled out in the last couple of years due to the demand for more money and this massive divide between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour .

Last December, the PGA Tour saw Wells Fargo pull out of its contract after being the title sponsor for the Charlotte stop for 22 years. Farmers Insurance is also not expected to renew its deal with the PGA Tour for its tournament at Torrey Pines, which expires in 2026.

More sponsorship changes may follow as golf’s landscape continues to transform.

It was one of those news drops all golf fans never will forget.

June 6, 2023: The PGA Tour and LIV Golf announce a "framework agreement" to merge business entities after weeks of secret negotiations.

The PGA Tour, whose roots go back more than a century, and LIV Golf, the upstart league launched in June 2021 with tour antagonist Greg Norman as its face and financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, forming an alliance?

This cannot be happening.

After two years of player poaching, lawsuits, nasty insults from both sides and talk of Saudi Arabia's atrocious human rights violations, the vision of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan side-by-side on a CNBC set detailing how the rival leagues will combine commercial businesses and rights into a new for-profit company, and drop all lawsuits, truly was surreal.

How has that gone?

At first, we were told that the "merger" — later reframed as an "agreement" — would be finalized by Dec. 31 and the PIF would be writing a very large check (somewhere between $1 billion and $2 billion) to boost PGA Tour Enterprises.  But New Year's Eve came and went without a deal, and now, one year later, we appear no closer than we were six months ago.

And after a brief cease-fire, some members, from both sides, resumed taking shots at each other, and LIV Golf, which has headquarters in West Palm Beach, went back to poaching PGA Tour stars.

"It's messy, and it has been and it seems to get messier every week," Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, said at the PGA Championship. "I don't think the game is big enough for two tours like that, and I think we are diluting the game in a way that is not healthy.

"I hope there's urgency because I do think it's doing damage to the tour, to the game. … I just don't think it's a healthy situation right now."

Here is a timeline of the ebbs and flows of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf when it comes to a possible merger:

If you can't beat them, join them

While surprised that everything came together so quickly, Rory McIlroy said the PGA Tour’s partnership with the PIF ultimately will be good for the game. Speaking the week the agreement was announced, McIlroy said much of it has been mischaracterized and it should not be viewed as a merger with LIV Golf.

“LIV has nothing to do with this," he said. "It’s the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the Public Investment Fund that are basically partnering to create a new company. That’s where I was a little frustrated. All I’ve wanted to do was protect the future of the PGA Tour and protect the aspirational nature of what the PGA Tour stands for. I think this does this.

"If you look at the structure, this new company sits above everything else. Jay on top of that. Technically, anyone involved with LIV would answer to Jay. The PIF was going to keep spending money in golf. At least the PGA Tour controls how that money is spent. You’re dealing with one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Would you rather fight against or have them as a partner?"

Greg Norman's message to staff

Although not involved in the negotiations, LIV's chief executive and commissioner Norman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, had a positive message for the staff. Norman, who was left out of the negotiations and not mentioned in any of the news releases associated with the agreement, told more than 100 people on a 30-minute call that LIV will see no operational changes and that work is already being done on a 2025 schedule.

“The spigot is now wide open for commercial sponsorships, blue-chip companies, TV networks," he said. "LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history and we’re not going anywhere."

Players losing trust in Monahan

The main topic of conversation at the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club was the announcement the previous week. Some players were open about expressing their anger and lack of trust in the tour and Monahan.

"I think it gets to a point where you want to have faith in management, and I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it's clear that that's not the consensus," Jon Rahm said. "I think the general feeling is that a lot of people feel a bit of betrayal from management."

Those words were prophetic coming from a man who, six months later, became the biggest name to defect from the PGA Tour.

Agreement dissected on Capitol Hill

About a month after the agreement, drama played out on Capitol Hill with tour COO Ron Price and policy board independent director Jimmy Dunne, of North Palm Beach, testifying at a Senate investigations subcommittee hearing.

They were grilled by a bipartisan committee that was concerned about antitrust violations. Aside from politicians attempting to bully Price and Dunne or just looking for air time, one of the more interesting revelations was the PIF proposing Tiger Woods and McIlroy being granted ownership of LIV Golf franchises. This idea was shot down by the PGA Tour.

Tiger getting involved

Before joining the PGA Tour policy board on Aug. 1, Woods led a group of more than 40 players in signing a list of demands of Monahan. The move was made to reestablish control of the PGA Tour after players heard about Monahan's secretive meetings with the PIF.

Woods became the sixth player director on the policy board, giving players more say in any final decisions.

Monahan regrets agreement rollout

Speaking for the first time since taking a medical leave of absence one week after the deal was announced because of anxiety over the deal, Monahan took responsibility for the awkward rollout of the framework agreement, saying there was a lot of misinformation leading to distrust.

"That's on me," he said.

“My biggest regret was not being more patient on the night of June 5, moving to make this announcement the next day."

Norman confident about LIV's future

In October, Norman spoke publicly for the first time since the agreement. He was at LIV's final event of the season at Doral.

Norman was upbeat and confident his league was on the upswing and promised LIV was here to stay. As far as his future … when asked about Price's comment at July's Senate subcommittee hearing that Norman is "out of a job" if a deal is reached, Norman shrugged.

"I knew it wasn't true," he said. "There's so much white noise floating around out there that I actually paid zero attention to.

"Sitting in this seat today, I know every step I've made has been for the right reasons. Right reasons for the game of golf. … So I was never in any fear of anybody saying anything or any animus against me or anything like that. Because the business model works."

LIV releases most of 2024 schedule

Soon after the conclusion of the 2023 season, LIV made it official that it was moving forward without interruption. Despite the ongoing negotiations, it announced most of its 2024 schedule, which included seven domestic and seven international events.

The original schedule did not include sites for the final two events: the individual and team championships. Those later were announced as Chicago and Dallas, respectively.

Rahm proves he has a price

Six months after the framework agreement, Rahm announced on Fox News: "I have officially joined LIV Golf." He was wearing an LIV letterman's jacket.

The Spaniard and No. 3 golfer in the world clearly is LIV's biggest and most important addition since its launch, sending the message, "We are still here, we are not going anywhere." And for LIV, that was worth the reported $550 million Rahm will receive, including bonuses.

The man who once refuted all LIV rumors by saying $400 million would not change his lifestyle proved he had a price after all.

Woods stands firm on deadline

Despite reports negotiations were dragging and Dec. 31 would come and go without a deal, Woods remained optimistic, right to the end.

Speaking in December from the PNC Championship in Orlando where he teamed with his son, Charlie, Tiger insisted nothing has changed when it comes to the deadline.

"As of right now, that is our time frame and our deadline," he said. "That was set forth back in early June. And that hasn't changed."

Nothing drops on New Year's Eve

Like the ball in Times Square, the PGA Tour and PIF were hoping to drop an announcement that would put an end to golf's civil war.

The year came and went and the only announcement was that the sides were prepared to continue negotiating.

PGA Tour finds major investor in SSG

The long-awaited deal between the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group was announced in late January. The SSG, a collective of marquee professional sports franchise owners headed by Fenway Sports Group, is pumping $3 billion into the tour. That included an initial investment of $1.5 billion into the launch of a commercial venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.

That makes SSG the tour's major financial partner, which had some, like Woods, now hinting maybe the tour no longer needed PIF's money.

"The monies that they have come to the table with, and what we initially had agreed to in the framework agreement, those are all the same numbers," Woods said about the SSG investment.

Tyrrell Hatton follows Rahm to LIV

LIV's strong offseason continued with the long-awaited signing of England's Tyrrell Hatton . The 16th-ranked golfer in the world joined in February, just before LIV's first event of the year, in Mexico. Hatton joined Rahm's team, confirming LIV would be adding a 13th team.

Hatton's signing came after Germany's Adrian Meronk, No. 39 in the world, joined LIV.

Monahan offers little at Players

Monahan's much-anticipated state of the game address from The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach in March lacked substance. The commissioner offered very little, other than confirming he recently met with Al-Rumayyan and talks are "accelerating."

While McIlroy continued to believe in Monahan's leadership and a deal being finalized — that later eroded, as we will see — Xander Schauffele was not so sure. "I would say in my book he's got a long way to go to gain the trust of the membership," Schauffele said.

And world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler placed the blame for golf's fractured state squarely on those who joined LIV.

"If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left," Scheffler said. "We had a tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that's where the splintering comes from."

More false hope after Bahamas meeting

Members of the PGA Tour Enterprises board, including Monahan and all six player directors — Woods, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati — met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas soon after the Players Championship.

Monahan called the meeting "constructive." Woods said. "We're headed in the right direction."

LIV players: Deal needed to save sport

LIV golfers weighed in on the negotiations from the event at Doral with Bryson DeChambeau saying there needs to be more of a sense of urgency.

"The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat," DeChambeau said. "And it needs to happen fast. It's not a two-year thing. Like it needs to happen quicker rather than later just for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest."

LIV looking to buy golf courses

Norman revealed in May that LIV Golf has thought about owning all its golf courses with each team having a home venue on which to host an event.

"And now you can build out around that," Norman told Bloomberg News. "It’s not just a golf course. You bring in education, hospitality, real estate, merchandise, management, and all these other different opportunities that the game of golf has to deliver to a community or to a region. We are going to be doing that.”

Jimmy Dunne resigns from PGA Tour policy board

Dunne, one of the architects of the framework agreement, resigned from the tour’s policy board the week of the PGA Championship. The North Palm Beach resident and president of Seminole Golf Club said since helping negotiate the agreement, "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my role is utterly superfluous."

Woods said the amount of work and dedication Dunne put into the board and into the PGA Tour has been "incredible."

McIlroy offered a grim outlook on the negotiations with Dunne no longer involved.

"I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been," McIlroy said. "And then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."

One year later and still no deal

A year has passed since that stunning announcement of a framework agreement and about six months since the deadline to turn that into a final deal.

And still, nothing.

But are we getting closer? According to The New York Times, possibly. Maybe?

More: Strong list of LIV, PGA Tour golfers attempting to qualify for U.S. Open at Bear's Club

The Times recently reported that negotiations between the PGA Tour and the PIF not only are very much alive but term sheets have been exchanged.

But it also added a deal is far from certain with the future of LIV Golf still to be decided.

And so we wait.
