Thus, enjoying the onboard food is also rewarding. But those wishing to save money must bring their own food, water, and beverages (alcoholic stock as per Amtrak guidelines). Passengers can eat their food and non-alcoholic beverages in their seats, in their personal Sleeping Cars, and in the Sightseer Lounges. Nevertheless, they can only enjoy private stock in their Sleeping Car accommodations.

Book Amtrak Tickets In Advance & Purchase In The First "Buckets"

Amtrak offers a distinctive way to purchase train tickets that works well for early-bird tourists. Amtrak offers tickets in 'buckets,' with the lowest rates going on sale first, as opposed to the dynamic pricing matrix used by the majority of airlines. The next bucket, with a higher ticket price, is opened up after the allowed number of tickets for that price in the bucket has been sold out.

While the USA 's national rail operator Amtrak won’t get you everywhere, it's pretty darn extensive, with thirty routes throughout travelling to over 500 destinations across 46 states. What's more, travelling in the USA by train offers the exhilaration of seeing incredible landscapes zoom by, with tasty slices of Americana served up when you slow through quirky little towns. There’s also no better way to meet (or people watch) the huge range of locals who'll hop on and off during your journey. Tempted? Here's an overview of a few of  many route examples  to consider:

City of New Orleans route - music-lovers might want to investigate the 19-hour Chicago-Memphis-New Orleans route that takes in 900 miles of US music heritage. Our guide to New Orleans will fill you in on what to see and do once you arrive.

Texas Eagle route - this epic 32-hour-trip from Chicago to San Antonio crosses the Mississippi River, traverses the piney woods of East Texas, and passes through Dallas before winding up in stunning San Antonio .

Pacific Surfliner route - at under six hours, this 351-mile route takes passengers through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles , Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties, with portions of it tracking Southern California's coastline.

If, having done your route research, you decide to take a seriously long-distance trip, it will be worth looking into booking a USA Rail Pass . These start from $499 for a maximum of ten journeys (called segments in Amtrak speak) taken over 30 days to over 500 destinations. For comparison, here are some sample one-way fares:

Once you know where you want to go, you'll want to book tickets well in advance - all passengers must have seats, and some trains (especially those travelling between major East Coast cities) can be booked solid. In addition to the rail passes covered above, here's a run-down of the different ticket types:

Saver Fares: the lowest available fares, with limited availability, so book early to secure the best deals.

Value Fares: available on all routes, with some change and refund options, limited availability.

Flexible Fares: fully refundable with no cancellation fees, with reservations easily modified. This is your best option if you're given to travelling by instinct and on impulse - you might want the flexibility to hop off and explore those must-visit nuggets shared by locals during your journey.

Business Fares: located in a dedicated car or section of the train, Business Class offers an "affordable, enhanced travel experience", as Amtrak describe it. These enhancements vary by train and route, but include the likes of extra legroom and complimentary (non-alcoholic) drinks.

Premium Fares: there are two premium services - Acela First Class (complimentary onboard food and beverage services, plus privileged access to Club Acela lounges) and Sleeper, with rooms and roomettes available on most long-distance routes. Prices for these accommodations are included in your Premium Fare.

That is to say, keep a cardie or jumper to hand - the temperature in Amtrak's coaches is uniformly regulated year-round, meaning that even if you're winding through the scorching Arizona desert, your car is likely to be on the chilly side. Roomettes are compact double cabins, some of which include an in-cabin toilet – only recommended for those who are very well acquainted with their travel partners.

Bedrooms are significantly bigger with more room to stretch out when the seats are arranged for day travel. They also have a more conventional, private enclosed toilet. Some even have showers.

Coach seats, despite being the cheapest option, have generous proportions, ample legroom (often superior to many airlines' business class seats) and recline pretty far back. Plenty of people do sleep in coach cars - you'll see whole families preparing to camp down with their own duvets and pillows.

When visiting the USA while travelling by train, it's worth knowing that Amtrak trains often share their tracks with massive, mile-long freight trains that are given priority. This means that delays on longer routes are pretty much inevitable. To be notified of delays on the move, get the Amtrak App or sign up for email notifications, which could save you from kicking your heels at your departure station.

Also bear in mind that your two-hour journey might just be a small section of a much longer, multi-day route, so try to avoid any tight connections - one of the most essential tips of USA train travel if you want to avoid any unexpected bumps in the road (or tracks).

Statistically speaking, rail travel is still one of the safest modes of transport, and providing you take all the usual common-sense precautions, travelling in the USA by train is generally safe, but it pays to be vigilant at major stations, especially at night. As always, having insurance is a smart idea too.

Be sure to keep an eye out for your bags, stowing away all valuables. If you're using night trains it might be worth investing in a basic bike lock to tether your luggage to something sturdy for total peace of mind, as opportunistic bag theft is probably the greatest threat you'll face. Alternatively...

Stations vary in size from huge complexes with multiple bars, shops and cafés to a single platform with a station sign and a bench. Most cities will let you check your baggage for free - get to your station 40 minutes before departure to take advantage of this. Having said that, all coach cars have ample overhead storage if you prefer to keep your case with you.

Checking your bags is certainly worth it on longer journeys - it frees you up to wander off to the dining car, Bar Car or vestibules without worrying about your valuables.

Feasting on a whole lot of  food  is an essential experience of travel to the USA, so it goes without saying that when travelling in the USA by train, a meal in the dining car is a must-have Amtrak experience. The Dining Car opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and usually for multiple sittings. To reserve in advance, keep an eye out for attendants.

That said, don't expect fancy Pullman-style dining. Options are fairly limited and the menu changes about as often as the timetable. But it's not all about the food - if you're travelling solo or as a pair, you'll likely be seated with fellow passengers, offering the chance to chat with locals and fellow travellers, exchange travel tips, and make new friends, with a backdrop of all-American scenery providing plenty to talk about.

Most trains will have a Bar Car. They’re usually next to the dining car, with tables and comfy leather booths for four where you can play cards, enjoy a coffee, and chat to fellow passengers, which makes visiting the Bar Car one of the best tips for USA train travel if you're the gregarious type.

The Bar Car is also where you'll find the National Park Guides, who ride the trains in their smart Scout-like uniforms during the summer months as part of Amtrak's Trails on Rails programme. They'll happily give you educational leaflets about the journey and point out interesting aspects of the passing landscapes.

Some of the more scenic routes will also have a Dome Car, with seats facing out with views through panoramic windows designed to make the most of the sublime scenery you'll be passing through.

These tend to fill up quickly on iconic routes like the California Zephyr, which passes through spectacular and otherwise inaccessible stretches of the Colarado Rockies , so be sure bag a seat early.

Not all stops are created equal. If you're a smoker, or just fancy stretching your legs and sampling the air outside on longer journeys, it pays to know if a stop is a designated 'rest stop', which means you're allowed to get off. If it's not, don't even try it - this rule is strictly enforced across the Amtrak network.

If you're travelling in a sleeper cabin (or in business class), you can make use of lounges in some of the bigger city stations, which offer complimentary wi-fi, newspapers, drinks and snacks before or after your train.

It's a great way to relax if you get to the station early, or want to kill a bit of time after 'detraining' (as Amtrak call it) on routes that arrive in the small hours of the morning.

Amtrak stations aren’t always slap-bang in centre of town. Most will have metropolitan transport links, of course, but some - like Atlanta , for instance - will be a cab ride away, so plan your accommodation and onward travel accordingly.

Conductors usually assign coach seating at the time of boarding on long-distance trains. Some state-supported services and Northeast Corridor services allow you to choose your own seat once you board. Also there are no middle seats on any of the trains!

New to riding a sleeper train in Europe? Here’s what to know

As more people reconsider how they travel on a warming planet, a small but growing contingent in Europe wants to switch from high-emission, short-haul planes to more climate-friendly sleeper trains.

But for all the climate benefits — plus the enduring romance of overnight train journeys — it’s not always simple building a vacation around them.

Several national railways and private operators have moved in to meet the rising demand, and the result is a patchwork of overnight routes sold at over 30 different websites. Many routes may not run every day, and online ticket aggregators don’t include all countries that have night trains.

“I’ve always gone around on trains and boats and buses, so it was normal for me,” said Cat Jones, founder of the flight-free travel agency Byway. “But friends would say, ‘Oh, that sounds amazing, but no way am I going to plan all that.’”

Sleeper train advocates, however, say the experience and convenience of riding the rails makes them worth any booking difficulty. With patience and a few tips, you’ll never have to deal with airport security lines in the middle of your European holiday.

Start with a little research

First, make sure routes exist between your desired cities. Back on Track, a European rail advocacy group, maintains a night train database (back-on-track.eu/night-train-list) with all current and soon-to-launch routes on the continent. Just be aware that city names are listed with local spellings, such as Praha for Prague.

Then head to the sleeper train section of Man in Seat 61 , a website run by former rail industry worker Mark Smith that exhaustively explains what to expect ( seat61.com/sleepers.htm) . The site has details on dozens of international routes, down to seat and berth numbers on specific trains — even photos of the food and where to find electrical outlets.

Many operators provide perks like breakfast and free water, and some allow female travelers to book shared spaces only with other women.

Once you’ve found the right route, check Trainline (thetrainline.com) and RailEurope ( raileurope.com/en-us ), which sell tickets on most railways. Or go directly to the operator’s website; all will have an option to switch the language to English.

Decide how much privacy you need

Night trains’ configuration varies by operator, line and carriage. Many trains have a car or two with traditional upright seats selling for as little as 19 euros, but they recline and are much more spacious than an airplane seat.

Other carriages have sleeper cabins with anywhere from one to six beds, which likely fold up when not in use. It’s possible to book an entire cabin for a family or group of friends, but you’ll pay extra.

Sarah Marks, a frequent sleeper train traveler from London, said she was nervous the first time sharing a cabin, but ultimately found it was a great way to meet like-minded travelers. “It’s quite an intimate experience,” she said. “But hand over heart, every single one has been really nice and actually enhanced my experience.”

Plan to book in advance — but not too far in advance

Because most rail companies use dynamic pricing, as airlines do, the price of a ticket likely will rise as the date approaches.

But if you search for tickets now for summer travel, chances are you won’t see the routes available. Many railways do not open ticket sales until two or three months in advance. Several factors influence the timing, but it’s mostly because track maintenance usually is scheduled overnight to minimize commuter disruption.

“With sleeper trains that’s tricky to plan around,” Smith said, noting that he often hears concerns from Americans who like to plan their trips several months in advance.

Be flexible

The most popular routes, such as Paris to Berlin, can sell out or become prohibitively expensive for some travelers during peak times.

Rather than be deterred, travelers should think of rail travel as breaking the mold of point-to-point round trips, said Jones.

“If what people want is not available on that day, do a daytime train and we’ll put you on another sleeper somewhere else,” she said. Because Europe’s rail network is so extensive, there are many ways to get from point A to point B and back again, maybe returning through a city you might not have considered visiting.

“By relying on that network effect,” she said, “there’s always an amazing option as long as you’re flexible.”

Next phase of the transformation of the Cork Area Commuter Rail network

Minister Ryan announces beginning of new phase of transformation of Cork commuter rail network. Planning begins for eight new stations, new depot and electrification as contract awarded. Everyone’s a winner with more rail choices says Minister Éamon Ryan.

Minister for Transport Éamon Ryan TD today announced the commencement of the next phase of the transformation of the Cork Area Commuter Rail network, set to deliver eight new commuter rail stations across the Cobh, Midleton and Mallow lines, a new depot and the electrification of the network.

Funded by the National Transport Authority under Project Ireland 2040, Iarnród Éireann has awarded a contract to TYPSA and Roughan O’Donovan appointing them as multi-disciplinary consultants for the design, planning and construction of this phase of Cork commuter rail network investment. This includes:

• New stations at Blackpool, Monard, Tivoli, Carrigtwohill West, Waterrock, Ballynoe, Blarney and Dunkettle.
• A new fleet maintenance depot to cater for a new electrified fleet of up to 150 carriages. Design development and review will take place prior to confirmation of the preferred depot location.
• Electrification of the Cork Commuter network.
• The programme also includes the upgrade of nine existing commuter stations on the Cork network.

Added to the existing rail projects underway (see below), the programme announced today will deliver a rail network offering high frequency, high quality rail commuter services to more communities, with a network capacity of trains up to every 10 minutes on all three commuter lines – Cork to Cobh, Midleton and Mallow. The CACR programme is central to the National Transport Authority’s Cork Metropolitan Area Transportation Strategy (CMATS) to transform the public and active transport network for the Cork area.

Iarnród Éireann with the multi-disciplinary consultants will develop the design of the stations, depot and electrification and other associated infrastructure, before applying to An Bord Pleanála for a Railway Order (equivalent of planning permission) by the end of 2025. Subject to the granting of the Railway Order and funding.

Today’s announcement is in addition to the ongoing three projects in the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme which will treble the capacity for trains on Cork’s commuter network. These existing projects are funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (EURRF) and the National Transport Authority under Project Ireland 2040. Progress to date includes:

• New through platform at Kent Station: Works commenced in Summer 2023 and are on target for delivery by the end of this year, an investment of €23 million.
• Signalling and communications upgrade: facilitating the 10-minute frequency on all three commuter lines, this €180 million investment has seen a design and build contract awarded for the new signalling system, and civil works commenced in February 2024. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2026.
• Glounthaune to Midleton twin-track: A €90 million investment, a Railway Order was granted by An Bord Pleanála in October 2023. A contract award for construction Is expected to be made in the coming months, and completed by the end of 2026.

Speaking at today’s announcement, Minister for Transport Éamon Ryan TD said:

“The Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme represents the largest investment in the rail network in Cork undertaken by the State. It will completely transform transport in and around the city, increasing train capacity and frequency, and connecting communities from Cobh to Midleton to Mallow along a sustainable and reliable rail spine. This is a good day for Cork and is another stepping-stone in our ambition to introduce a new age of rail, here in the Rebel County, and right across the country. With new services and increased capacity nationally, we are already seeing a real resurgence in the numbers of people choosing to use the train. This is not just good for rail users themselves but it’s also good for everyone travelling because it means less cars on our roads, and less congestion, so everyone’s a winner with rail.”

Anne Graham, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority welcomed the announcement, saying :

“Today’s announcement represents a welcome step in the process of investment in rail infrastructure in the Cork area. It also a clear signal of intent on the part of NTA that delivering for the people of Cork by implementing the various aspects of CMATS is now a priority.”

Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Jim Meade said:

“We are seeing record demand across our Cork commuter rail network, and we look forward to working with our consultants, and the NTA, EURRF and Department of Transport to deliver a network that will facilitate millions more sustainable journeys for the people of Cork and those visiting every year.”

VIA RAIL UNVEILS ITS PLAN TO TRANSFORM PASSENGER RAIL IN CANADA

MONTRÉAL, May 23, 2024 – Mario Péloquin, President and Chief Executive Officer of VIA Rail Canada (VIA Rail), unveiled today the Corporation’s strategic plan: VIAction 2030. Through this ambitious plan based on concrete objectives, VIA Rail aims to become a best-in-class operator in North America and a leader in integrated mobility at the heart of the passenger journey in Canada.

Among its 2030 objectives, VIA Rail is committed to:

• Generating savings equivalent to 15% of its operating deficit;
• Reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2005;
• Increasing its capacity by 18%.

“Canada was built by rail, and I fundamentally believe in the transformative potential of this industry,” said Mario Péloquin. “I have the ambition to act now to create meaningful change for our passengers, and this plan gives us a clear roadmap which allows us to aim higher and transform the way we operate.”

The train is the way to the future to, among other things, meet the economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Over the past five years, the Government of Canada has invested more than $3 billion in the modernization of VIA Rail, including the replacement of its Québec City – Windsor corridor fleet to offer a more modern, comfortable, and accessible travel experience. This strategic plan is the logical next step of this major modernization effort and will allow VIA Rail to open the next chapter of its history.

Commuters are being encouraged to ditch their cars in favour of a 50 cent flat-rate ride — no matter how far they're travelling — in a pre-election trial, kicking off on August 5 and running for six months.

Speaking from Mango Hill train station on Sunday, Premier Steven Miles told media the move is all about easing congestion on roads, making it easier to get around Queensland, and easing the cost of living.

"Think of all of those savings on petrol, on car parking, on time stuck in the car," Mr Miles said. 

"Public transport usage has never returned to its pre-COVID levels and that's one of the things contributing to congestion, particularly in the south-east.

"Fifty-cent fares will give people a reason to rethink their habits, a reason to go back to public transport when they can, and everyone benefits from that."

Transport Minister Bart Mellish explained "most states" haven't seen a return to their pre-pandemic public transport patronage, but hopes the trial will change that for Queensland.

"People will be able to commute for a dollar a day — 50 cents in, 50 cents out," Mr Mellish said.

"This is really a watershed day for public transport in Australia."

For a transport minister, he likened the announcement to "winning State of Origin, winning a grand final, and winning a grand slam all in one day".

Deputy Premier Cameron Dick reflected on Labor's promise to deliver more cost-of-living relief in the budget, saying this "radical change" — expected to cost $150 million — would deliver that.

He said every bus on the road is equivalent to 50 cars off it, and every train running takes 600 cars off the road.

"For people living in the outer suburbs … this is hundreds of dollars that they might be able to save, for some people they might even save thousands," Mr Dick said.

Mr Miles is also excited to see if the "almost-free public transport" trial delivers "real benefits" to commuters, household budgets, and Queensland's traffic network.

Support, questions from LNP

The LNP supports the plan but Deputy Leader of the Opposition Jarrod Bleijie said "there are some issues" with public transport around reliability, whether there will be an increase in service frequency, and the possibility of crowding. 

"We know how tough it is for Queenslanders at the moment," Mr Bleijie said.

"The feedback we're already getting is yes, Queenslanders are supportive of the cost-of-living relief, but cynical that [the trial ends] just after the [October state] election.

"This government will do and say anything to get re-elected."

Earlier, Mr Dick encouraged Opposition Leader David Crisafulli to explain how he will finance the LNP's "unfunded promises to cut debt, to cut revenue, and to eliminate deficits".

Mr Miles accepted "we may well see crowded services" — noting Transport and Main Roads will help in monitoring routes — and, in that case, the government "will do what we can to manage that as quickly as we can".

'Use it or lose it'

Mr Miles said a campaign will rollout with the price change, which will include the message "use it or lose it". 

"If this is effective, if this reduces congestion and sees lots of people get back on public transport, then obviously we'll consider making it permanent," the premier said. 

"If it doesn't work … it won't continue." 

When questioned on why the government didn't simply make public transport free, Mr Miles pointed to concerns people may not tap on and off and therefore tracking patronage would be more difficult.

RACQ chief executive David Carter supported the announcement and would like to see prices permanently reduced, noting customers' three public transport desires: affordability, convenience, and flexibility.

"We look forward to seeing the results … We hope [the trial] allows us to set up something more permanent," he said. 

Mr Carter wants to see road congestion reduced "while the infrastructure catches up".

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the trial would help in terms of public transport affordability, but also wants to see action on the frequency and reliability of the network.

He referred to council plans to rollout more buses from December, but noted that hinged on support from the state government.

"There's a really wonderful opportunity to have lower fares, plus better and more frequent services," Cr Schrinner said.

"Wouldn't it be wonderful to have the very first Brisbane Metro passengers paying only 50 cents for a trip?"

Patrons embrace change

Public transport patrons in the state's capital welcomed the trial, with some commuters telling the ABC they prefer catching the train to driving. 

One group was already making the most of free rail to Lang Park for the Broncos game, but said the 50 cent rides would help with travel to school. 

"My mum puts $10 on my Go Card for a week," Jorja McKay said. 

"It's better than driving in a car," friend Izzy Raybould added. 

Fellow commuter Grace Crawford takes the train to school daily and she agreed, often opting for rail to avoid "being stuck in all the traffic". 

Steven Bayne was also on his way to the NRL game but said other train rides would usually cost him $4.50 each way, which can get expensive for workers doing to trip daily.

"Everything is expensive these days," Mr Bayne said.

"[Public transport] is a lot easier … like today, going to the Broncos game, [you can] have a drink."

The Rodriguez family pay even more to take the train, at $6.63 per ride. 

"Any help at the moment is good, especially for families," mum Jenny said. 

"We work everyday, full-time, but [the cost of living] is still tough."

The comeback journey is over for Gabby Douglas , at least for now. 

The 2012 Olympic all-around champion returned to competition this spring after nearly an eight-year hiatus from the sport, but just days before the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships were set to begin, she withdrew from the competition, reportedly citing an ankle injury. 

"I love this sport and I love pushing my limits," Douglas reportedly said. "I hope I can inspire both my peers and the next generation of gymnasts that age is just a number, and you can accomplish anything you work hard for."

Douglas competed a little over a week ago at the Core Hydration Classic, just her second meet since the 2016 Rio Olympics, but withdrew from the remainder of the competition after falling twice on uneven bars in the first rotation. 

Since Douglas had not met the required all-around score to compete on all four events from her performance at the American Classic in April, she was only qualified to compete on three events at the U.S. Championships - vault, uneven bars and balance beam. 

The U.S. Championships would have been her final opportunity to earn an invite to the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials in June. 

Douglas reportedly intimated that her plan is to train for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. 

"I've proved to myself and to the sport that my skills remain at an elite level. My plan is to continue to train for the L.A. 2028 Olympics. It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics."
