"confusing, obtuse, esoteric, and strange": gary larson felt the same way about far side comics as his readers.

15 Funniest Far Side Comics Set on A Desert Island

10 funniest far side comics that just turned 40 (including 1 of gary larson's all-time top 10), wolverine's most obscure power just became absolutely essential.

  • Gary Larson's absurd, idiosyncratic humor propelled The Far Side to success as a nationally syndicated newspaper comic strip, and has resulted in an enduring appeal that continues to attract new fans to his work.
  • In The Prehistory of The Far Side , the strip's creator offered an analysis of the subtleties in some of his jokes – including several cases where the humor was actually too subtle, risking the potential of Larson's most dreaded reaction from his audience: no reaction.
  • Larson's goal was always to provoke a response from his readers, whether it was laughter, shock, or confusion – usually, the subtlety of his humor helped him in this last category, though The Far Side's occasional "failures" at times came as a result of being overly " obtuse " or " esoteric ."

Gary Larson once offered the perfect four-word description for The Far Side , paralleling the most frequent comments – and complaints – about the humor of his comic. Larson's absurdist humor was a staple of newspaper comic pages nationwide through the 1980s, until the mid-90s; as the artist freely admitted, even during the peak of the strip's run, he was often as perplexed by his own jokes as any reader.

In The Prehistory of the Far Side , Larson offered "close readings" of several of his panels, scrutinizing them in-depth in order to explain to the reader how the most seemingly minor details could make or break a joke's impact on the audience.

As part of his analysis of a particularly subtle joke, the creator offered vital insight into why some of his punchlines could be easy to miss – and in the process, summed up The Far Side using several words frequently associated with his work.

One of the most memorable recurring elements in Gary Larson's Far Side was the desert island, which proved to be among his favorite bits.

Gary Larson Perfectly Summed Up The Far Side In Four Words

"confusing, obtuse, esoteric, strange".

If anything, this is an example of Larson being too subtle with his humor, though he had some other choice words for this cowboy comic. " It's confusing, obtuse, esoteric, and strange, " he wrote, adding that: " in other words, it's a Far Side cartoon. "

In a section of The Prehistory entitled "Subtle Things," Gary Larson discoursed on exactly that: the myriad subtleties that make Far Side comics worth returning to again and again. Like a great novel, film, or television series, The Far Side rewards repeat engagement, as readers will frequently pick up things about a strip the second or third time looking at it, that may very well have gone over their heads the first time. This is perfectly illustrated by the author's step-by-step walkthrough of one particularly obscure cowboy joke.

Cowboys appeared frequently in The Far Side , but like any of the comic's many recurring elements, Gary Larson's Old West jokes ranged from laugh-out-loud hilarious, to total head-scratchers. One example of the latter featured a cowboy being tossed head-first through a saloon window – though as Larson explained, despite this bit of physical comedy being centered in the frame, it is not the actual punchline of the panel. As he described it:

I was thinking about Western films and that common scene of some guy getting thrown out the swinging downs and into the street. In this case, every customer in the place is either running or being thrown out – implying there's a pretty tough and angry character somewhere inside. And how tough a guy is this mystery person? Well, that's his bear parked outside.

For less-than-attentive readers, this is a case of a Far Side joke that can easily be glossed over entirely, without fully registering why or how it is funny.

Gary Larson openly acknowledged in The Prehistory that this was an issue, with The Far Side's creator going as far as to even say this joke " simply didn't work ." If anything, this is an example of Larson being too subtle with his humor, though he had some other choice words for this cowboy comic. " It's confusing, obtuse, esoteric, and strange, " he wrote, adding that: " in other words, it's a Far Side cartoon. " In other words, it perfectly encapsulates the inscrutable nature that came to define the strip.

Far Side's "Confusing, Obtuse, Esoteric, Strange" Style Led To Success

And occasional failure.

The subtle humor of The Far Side was one of its great joys, and most engaging qualities – but in some instances, it was responsible for panels not getting the reaction Larson wanted from his audience.

The Far Side's creator made no secret of the fact that his humor could be just as mystifying to him as to his readers. According to Gary Larson, his greatest creative strength was an ability to " tune into himself. " In other words, he was able to allow an uninhibited flow of ideas onto the page, which he then worked on to transform into finished Far Side panels. As an artist, Larson trusted his own instincts, and his own sense of humor – and ultimately, from his most obvious, over-the-top puns , to its most arcane inside jokes, the goal of every Far Side panel was to elicit a reaction from the reader.

The weirdness, iconoclasm, and occasional edginess of The Far Side were pillars of what made it successful. Gary Larson's humor may have often been " confusing, obtuse, esoteric, and strange ," but this was precisely what drew people to it. The strip's frequently-quixotic nature proved to be captivating to readers, resulting in the comic becoming a national phenomenon, with Larson's work making him financially successful, in addition to being critically lauded. At the same time, as he demonstrated in The Prehistory , The Far Side's creator could at times take the subtlety of his work too far.

In the course of its fifteen-year run in syndication, Gary Larson produced thousands of Far Side cartoons. Not every one of these qualified as a success, at least by their creators' artistic standard. The subtle humor of The Far Side was one of its great joys, and most engaging qualities – but in some instances, it was responsible for panels not getting the reaction Larson wanted from his audience. Even these "failures," however, were indicative of a larger success; The Far Side was a product of creative experimentation, and while not every experiment yields positive results, any result is better than nothing.

Gary Larson's Goal: Provoke A Response From His Readers

A non-reaction was the greatest failure.

The occasional "failure" of The Far Side to provoke a reaction provide an especially interesting case study, as a sort of control group for examining in juxtaposition with the voluminous "successful" examples of the strip over the years.

Gary Larson once described The Far Side as being designed to test his readers' "reflexes" – meaning that he wanted his art to garner an immediate reaction from his audience, with laughter being just one of several possible satisfying reactions. Not every Far Side comic was intended to provoke a laugh-out-loud reaction. Some where meant to make the reader exclaim "Oh God!" Others were deliberately crafted to puzzle the reader, eliciting a question of "What-the?" Subtlety was often key to testing this last reflex; that said, too-subtle of a joke could doom the panel to a non-reaction.

To Larson, the worst thing a reader could do when encountering the daily Far Side in the newspaper was glance at it and then immediately move on. In his discussion of the various reactions he sought to elicit through his work, Larson called a piece of art that gets a non-reaction " simply a creative effort that tanked. " If his art could grab the reader's attention by being " confusing, obtuse, esoteric, and strange, " that was great; it was only on occasion – such as with the strip featuring a bear with a saddle waiting for its rider outside a saloon – that this backfired.

The occasional "failure" of The Far Side to provoke a reaction provide an especially interesting case study, as a sort of control group for examining in juxtaposition with the voluminous "successful" examples of the strip over the years. Artistic success can only be quantified – as though by scientists in a laboratory – to a certain extent, but in any case, it is an exciting endeavor to use the insights into the comic's creation offered by Gary Larson over the years to deconstruct and analyze The Far Side , in order to achieve a greater understanding of what makes it so enduringly funny.

The best new shows to stream on Netflix, Hulu, Max (HBO), and more

Master Indara points her green lightsaber at Mae in The Acolyte.

2024 hasn’t had the wall-to-wall content that the streamers provided for us in 2023. But when a week gives us four new dramas to enjoy, it’s hard to complain. Two of this week’s series — Netflix’s Sweet Tooth and Paramount+’s Criminal Minds: Evolution —  are back with new seasons. Meanwhile Disney+’s The Acolyte and Hulu’s Clipped are new shows. Between those four series, you’ve got a lot of TV to catch up on this weekend.

June isn’t over yet, as both The Boys season 4 and House of the Dragon season 2 are on the horizon. So check back here every Friday as we update the best new shows to stream. Your next favorite binge is below.

Netflix , Hulu , Amazon Prime Video , Max , Disney+ , Paramount+ , Peacock , and Apple TV+ all have one thing in common: They’re more expensive than they used to be! We can live with higher rates as long as new shows keep coming, but it’s always a good idea to consider signing up for the ad-supported tiers , which are worth it if you can sit through a few commercials. If it can save you some money on your streaming bill, it’s worth it.

  • The 50 best shows on Netflix in June 2024
  • The best shows on Hulu right now (June 2024)
  • The best shows on Disney+ right now (May 2024)

When you’re done here, check out the best new movies to stream this week , as well as the best shows on Netflix , best shows on Hulu , best shows on Amazon Prime Video , and best shows on Disney+ .

The Acolyte (2024)

Over a century before the Star Wars prequels, someone is going around killing Jedi in The Acolyte . Suspicion immediately falls on Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg), the former apprentice of Jedi Master Sol ( Squid Game season 2 ‘s Lee Jung-jae). In an instant, it’s as if the universe has turned on Osha as even her friends believe she’s a murderer.

The reality is more disturbing. A Sith is orchestrating the murders for his Acolyte to perform, and now there are only two names left on their hit list — including Sol himself.

Clipped (2024)

If you know anything about the NBA, then you’ve probably heard that the Clippers are the “other” team in Los Angeles behind the Lakers. FX’s Clipped takes a dramatized look back at one of the most turbulent times in the franchise’s history. Coach Doc Rivers (Laurence Fishburne) has put together a team that can win, but Clippers owner Donald Sterling (Ed O’Neill) just can’t seem to stop interfering in his work.

Donald has his own problems, as his wife, Shelly Sterling (Jacki Weaver), is angry that Donald’s mistress, V. Stiviano (Cleopatra Coleman), is increasingly public about their relationship. When the Sterlings try to reclaim some of the lavish gifts that Donald has given to Stiviano, she retaliates by releasing recordings of him that could bring down his basketball operation.

The Veil (2024)

Elisabeth Moss headlines The Veil as MI6 agent Imogen Salter, a spy who is particularly good at getting people to give up their secrets without physical coercion. However, Imogen may have met her match in Adilah El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan), a woman who is either the highest-ranking woman in ISIS or just another pawn of the terrorist group.

Before Imogen can get to the truth about Adilah’s identity, both women are forced to go on the run in order to survive. Can Imogen trust her unexpected travel companion? And if Imogen fails to extract all of Adilah’s secrets, then she may not be the only one who suffers the consequences.

Criminal Minds: Evolution (2005)

Unlike the current season of Doctor Who , Criminal Minds: Evolution fully embraces that it is the 17th season of a police procedural drama that goes back to 2005. Last season, David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (AJ Cook), and the rest of the Behavioral Analysis Unit team uncovered a network of serial killers that was formed in the wake of the pandemic.

While the BAU identified and captured Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), the man behind the serial killer network, he still finds ways to be a thorn in their side in the new season. There’s also a new mystery on the horizon that may push the BAU team to their limits.

Mayor of Kingstown (2021)

The “mayor” is back in Mayor of Kingstown season 3, but if Mike McLusky (Jeremy Renner) thought things were going to get easier, then he’s in for a rude awakening. Russian criminals are muscling their way into Kingstown, and they don’t care who they have to hurt or kill to claim power.

It might take some unlikely alliances to keep the Russians from taking the criminal underworld out from under them. And this is a battle where Mike has a lot to lose if he backs down.

Evil (2019)

Things are getting extremely personal for Dr. Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers) in the fourth and final season of Evil . For the last three seasons, Kristen has worked alongside Father David Acosta (Mike Colter) and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate supernatural occurrences on behalf of the Catholic Church despite the fact that Kristen and Ben are both skeptics. And Sister Andrea (Andrea Martin) has since joined the team as well.

Now, Kristen’s nemesis, Dr. Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson), has some very dark plans for her frozen eggs as part of a conspiracy with Kristen’s own mother, Sheryl (Christine Lahti). Their shared ambition may be crazy, but if there’s one thing that’s real in this show, it’s evil.

Sweet Tooth (2021)

Evolve or die. One of the biggest problems facing the characters in Sweet Tooth ’s third and final season is that many of the human characters would rather die than let the new human-animal hybrid children inherit the Earth. This is something that Gus (Christian Convery) has struggled with since he realized that some people would react badly to his half-deer features.

Season 3 starts with Gus and his friends on a long journey to Canada to reunite with Birdie (Amy Seimetz), the woman Gus is convinced is his mother. Birdie may be working on a cure for “the Sick” that has devastated the human population, but Gus is the one who has to decide whether humanity is worth saving at all.

Eric (2024)

The title character of Eric is the creation of a boy named Edgar Anderson (Ivan Morris Howe), who only wanted to help his father, Vincent (Benedict Cumberbatch), come up with a new puppet for his kids TV show. Unfortunately, the volatile relationship between Vincent and his wife, Cassie Anderson (Gaby Hoffmann), leads to Edgar’s disappearance somewhere in New York City.

While going out of his mind with grief, Vincent is stunned when Eric seemingly comes to life as a 7-foot-tall puppet. And as strange as it may sound, Eric may be Vincent’s only hope of ever seeing his son again.

Bridgerton (2020)

Through the first two seasons of Bridgerton , Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) believed that love had simply passed her by. But this season, Penelope moves from a supporting role into a romantic lead when Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) reenters her orbit.

Colin thoughtlessly insulted Penelope last season, and he nearly lost her as a friend. Now, more than anything else, he just wants to win back her affection. But as Colin earns Penelope’s forgiveness, they start feeling a mutual attraction that neither one of them believed would ever happen. However, since this is still Bridgerton , complications will inevitably arise that may keep them from finding love with each other.

Max (formerly HBO and HBO Max)

Hacks (2021).

Last season on Hacks , the show challenged its own premise by letting Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) complete her comeback as a comedian … followed by Deborah promptly firing Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), the much younger comedy writer who helped Deborah reclaim her career. Deborah may have acted with good intentions to propel Ava forward, but it seemed like the show would have a difficult time getting them back together again.

Hacks season 3 comes up with a new reason for Deborah and Ava to collaborate, even if both of them are falling back into familiar patterns to do so. The dynamics have changed because Ava has now found some success of her own. But Ava’s decision to come back to Deborah won’t always have the best outcome for either woman.

Trying (2020)

There must be a rule among streamers that each outlet needs a certain allotment of British TV series. Trying is one Apple TV+’s imports from the U.K., and it revolves around Jason Ross (Rafe Spall) and Nikki Newman (Esther Smith), a couple who desperately wanted to have a baby together. And when that didn’t work out, they decided to adopt.

During the third season, Jason and Nikki fought to adopt a pair of siblings, Princess (Scarlett Rayner) and Tyler (Cooper Turner). They won that battle, but there are more challenges ahead in the newly released fourth season that may fray the fragile bonds between the kids and their adoptive parents.

Dark Matter (2024)

Don’t you just hate it when you’re simply enjoying life with your family one day, and the next day you’re stuck in some alternate world? That happens to Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) in Dark Matter . And in this reality, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly) isn’t his wife, their son doesn’t exist, and his friends think Jason’s crazy.

There’s really only one person who could have stolen Jason’s life: Another version of himself. In order to get back to his family, Jason has to navigate the limitless worlds of the multiverse in the hope that he can find the one Earth that used to be his home.

Amazon Prime Video

Outer range (2022).

Outer Range starts off a lot like Yellowstone . It features an A-list star, Josh Brolin, as a rancher named Royal Abbott, who is consumed with keeping a rival family from stealing his family’s ranch out from under them. Things slip into sci-fi territory when Royal discovers that there’s an enigmatic black void on his land. From there, the present and the future collide in ways that Royal doesn’t fully understand.

As season 2 arrives, Royal just wants to keep his family together now that he’s finally realized who Autumn (Imogen Poots) really is. But as the mystery of the void deepens, Royal may not be able to hold on to the ones that he loves.

Maxton Hall -- The World Between Us (2024)

The German YA romance series Maxton Hall: The World Between Us is blowing up on Prime Video. The story is about two teenagers at a prestigious school: The wealthy James Beaufort (Damian Hardung) and Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten), a student who is poor compared to everyone else in her class.

When Ruby witnesses James’ sister, Lydia (Sonja Weißer), in a scandalous situation, his attempts to bribe her or scare her into silence only create enmity between them. Ruby won’t be bought off and James won’t back down. But when they’re forced to work together, the sparks between James and Ruby are undeniably romantic. And that means their lives are about to get more complicated.

There aren't many new romance shows on Netflix right now, but there are new seasons of some popular shows, and that's the next best thing! Netflix's breakout romantic drama, Bridgerton, is back for season 3 on May 16. But since that season is being split into two halves, you'll have to wait until June 13 to see the remaining episodes.

The other good news for romance fans is that Netflix has now added the sixth season of Starz's time-traveling romance drama Outlander. There was a two-year gap between the premiere of Outlander season 6 on Starz and its streaming debut on Netflix. That may mean Outlander season 7 part 1 could come to Netflix in 2025.

Despite the platform's very high subscriber counts, the best Amazon Prime Video original series are not held in the same regard as those from some other platforms. That's not to say that there aren't any good Amazon Originals, however. In fact, Amazon was the first streaming service to win an Emmy with Transparent.

Since then, however, Prime Video hasn't quite captured the zeitgeist with any of its offerings. That said, there are many quality series on Amazon. Although new ones don't hit the streamer with the same frequency as Netflix or Hulu, this list will help you get caught up on the considerable options available on the platform. Read on for the best Amazon Prime Video original series, including one new one. We’ve also rounded up the best Netflix original series and the best Hulu original series if Prime Video doesn’t have the originals you’re looking for.

The romantic comedy is not what it used to be. The genre used to be a regular feature at the box office, and we could almost always count on getting at least one good one a year.

While that may no longer be the case, that doesn’t mean that the genre is totally dead, as 2023 has produced a couple of well-above-average rom-coms. We highlight the three best from the year so far below:  Rye Lane (2023) Rye Lane | Official Trailer | Hulu
