THE WARLOCKS UK Tour Kicks Into Action Next Week!

The Warlocks - Photo by Eric Curtis

LA based, psyche drone lords, THE WARLOCKS will be coming to these bleak UK shores this March for a string of gigs, the dates for which are as follows:

Tuesday 11th March – London, Corsica Studios Wednesday 12th March – Glasgow, Broadcast Thursday 13th March – Liverpool, The Kazimier Friday 14th March – Leeds, The Wardrobe Saturday 15th March – Manchester, Antwerp Mansion

THE WARLOCKS recently returned with their first album in 5 years to rave reviews. Recorded over a two year period, Skull Worship (review here ) is the band’s eighth album.  THE WARLOCKS construct a dense, more elaborate web of sound, layers of distortion and the occasional synth a la Silver Apples and Red Crayola. “ Silver & Plastic ” expands the band’s oeuvre into acoustic territory recalling T Rex. Other songs like “ Endless Drops ” turn to Hawkwind, Neu! and experimental rock for inspiration.

“Not everything fits perfectly on this record,” describes singer Bobby Hecksher. “There are loose parts, fragmented sections and then it rocks all together. It’s not perfectly polished like a lot of records out there. More like an expression of moments in time that drip together like a weird dream.”

THE WARLOCKS are: Bobby Hecksher: Vocals, Guitar, Keyboards & Bass JC Rees: Guitar, Feedback, Percussion Earl V. Miller: Guitar, Drone Machine Chris DiPino: Bass George Serrano: Drums

This autumn Future Yard are thrilled to be welcoming psych-rockers The Warlocks.

Formed in 1999, L.A.-based group The Warlocks produce a relentless, hypnotic wall of sound that suggests a collision between classic psychedelia, Krautrock and The Velvet Underground. Led for the past twenty-plus years by Papa Warlock aka front man Bobby Hecksher, who´s backed by J.C. Rees (guitar, feedback), Earl V. Miller (guitar, drone machine), Christopher DiPino (bass), and Oscar Ruvalcaba (drums) —  The Warlocks are back on the road again this year for a full-scale tour in support of ‘In Between Sad’, their new LP set to be released via  Cleopatra Records  in Sept 2023.

"Creamy, dreamy, glass breaking-style storytelling" is how Bobby Hecksher describes the psychedelic-rock sound of The Warlocks' tenth full-length studio album, The Chain , which was released April 3, 2020, on Cleopatra Records.

"We're telling a story this time," Hecksher says about the album's ripped-from-the-headlines concept, which he says had been percolating for a few years before it suddenly came to him with the delirious intensity of a fever-soaked dream, like that "out-of-body experience you get at a show when you're drenched in sweat and suddenly feel so alive."

That concept, Hecksher says, is based around "a Bonnie & Clyde-ish twenty-something couple who rob a bank but get caught and then are cast down the bottomless pit of our justice system. The main characters, Rocky and Diamond, come from different means and thus have very different outcomes. It's a loose collection of 'you got fucked and swept under the rug'-type feelings revealed amid happy songs about their relationship, provided as a kind of relief."

"I've been reading lots of articles about our justice system" Hecksher says. "I've also been watching a lot of real-life/fictionalized prison TV series. All these young adults are caught committing very low-level crimes, but they end up getting these huge bits of their lives taken away from them. The ones who have money usually fair better."

The Chain was recorded by The Warlocks — Hecksher (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass), John Christian Rees (guitar, feedback), Earl V. Miller (guitar, drone machine), Christopher DiPino (bass), Cesar A. Reyes (keyboards), and Jason "Plucky" Anchondo (drums) -- over the course of a few weeks and co-produced by Hecksher and Rob Campanella at Rob's Figment Studios in Lake Hollywood, CA.

After Hecksher explained The Chain's  back story to Cleopatra, they greenlit the shooting of a short film (comprised of two four-minute mini-movies) based around two new songs -- "Dear Son" and "I'm Not Good Enough/Party Like We Used To" -- which tell the story of the ill-fated tragic couple. These are accompanied by several other tracks from the album: "The Robbery," Mr. Boogeyman," "Double Life," "You Stooge You," "Consequences," and "You Hurt Me."

"I read a bunch of screenplay books," Hecksher says, "and then tossed a script together, punk-rock style." Bobby and his band mates and friends then filmed their mini-movies for  The Chain over the course of two days this past February near Hecksher's home in Eagle Rock.

In June, The Warlocks — who are joined by Bob Mustachio on a second set of drums -- will launch a full-scale four-week tour of the U.S., hitting all the major markets ("we're looking forward to the East Coast shows," Hecksher says, "I think it's been about ten years since we've played there"), followed by European dates in the fall. "We've been focusing on Europe for the last five-to-seven years, and have hit all the major festivals over there many times over."

Bobby Heckser actually grew up near the beach on Florida's west coast before his family moved to an avocado farm near Ft. Myers. His first real exposure to music came from listening to records being played on the air at his grandfather's progressive/AOR rock radio stations, WMYR-AM/WHEW-FM, where his mom worked as a secretary.

"I spent a lot of time at the radio station," Hecksher says, and gravitated towards listening to bands like "Sonic Youth, the Butthole Surfers, Neu! and Hawkwind," a few of his biggest musical influences, but he says he didn't get into what he calls the "originators" -– legacy rock acts like the Stones and Bob Dylan — until much later, a decade or more after he and his family had moved to Los Angeles in the late '80s, when he was sixteen years old.

By the mid-'90s, a couple of Hecksher's first L.A. bands, Charles Brown Superstar and Magic Pacer, had both released two full-length albums each before splitting. He then found himself playing bass in the Brian Jonestown Massacre, led by kindred spirit Anton Newcombe, who ended up living at Hecksher's house after his post- Dig!  meltdown (once upon a time, Bobby was also housemates with Beck, playing bass on his 1994 album  Stereopathetic Soulmanure ).

After Newcombe heard Hecksher playing some of his new dark magick-inspired songs through the bedroom wall they shared, he encouraged Bobby to form a new band. Hecksher says he had no idea that that NYC's the Velvet Underground (clearly an early influence), and San Francisco's the Grateful Dead had both used the moniker the Warlocks in early incarnations, he just though it was a cool-sounding name. Hecksher's L.A.-based Warlocks would play their first gig — as an eight-piece double-drummer ensemble -- on July 4, 1998.

After signing a record contract (in Bobby's own blood!) with Greg Shaw's Burbank-based Bomp! Records, the Warlocks released their debut album, Rise and Fall , in the fall of 2001, which was subsequently followed by full-length albums and EPs on larger and smaller labels, including  Phoenix  (Birdman, 2002),  Baby Blue (Mute, 2002), the Tom Rothrock-produced  Surgery (Mute, 2005),  Heavy Deavy Skull Lover (Tee Pee, 2007),  The Mirror Explodes (Tee Pee, 2009), and  Skull Worship (released on Hecksher's Zap Banana imprint in 2013).

In 2016, Hecksher's Warlocks signed a new contract (this time in ink) with L.A.-based indie Cleopatra Records, who so far have released two studio albums --  Songs From the Pale Eclipse (2016) and  Mean Machine Music (2019) -- and the band's first live album,  Vevey (2017), a career-spanning selection of some of their best songs, which was recorded in Switzerland.

"It's weird to think I've been signed on one label or another since I was eighteen years old," Hecksher says, but he's particularly proud to be associated with Cleopatra, who have, in his words, "always managed to always do what they say and be very supportive. They are absolutely wonderful to work with."

Now 45 years old, Bobby Hecksher is enjoying the path his life has taken over the past twenty-plus years, recently marrying his longtime girlfriend, Marianne (who he affectionately calls his "Frenchy"), who he first met about ten years ago. Together, they are expecting their first child in August, after which he expects he will take some time off to focus on family before returning to making more music and touring again sometime further down the road.

With a rotating cast of musicians, the Warlocks have been trudging the psychedelic rock path for some 15 years now, with the mesmerising ‘Skull Worship’ their long-awaited return to action.

the warlocks uk tour

There are also nods to space rock and Krautrock , but for modern day comparisons look no further than the ‘family’ of psychedelic American bands that includes Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and their less heralded, but in many ways superior, cousins the Black Angels and Brian Jonestown Massacre.

The links between the bands are plentiful, with Hecksher having completed a stint as bassist for Brian Jonestown Massacre just as Anton Newcombe , that band’s leader, has drummed for the Warlocks.

Drone rock has recently seen a resurgence, notably in the shape of Wooden Shjips’ ‘Back To Land’, along with the Black Angels’ 2013 offering ‘Indigo Meadow’, and ‘Skull Worship’ is worthy of comparison to these essential slabs of psychedelia.

The repetition of the catchy opening riff that adorns Dead Generation sets a high standard for the rest of the album and the track weaves a spell of guitar and synth mastery to leave the listener eagerly anticipating the next step.

That arrives in the shape of Chameleon – a slower beast that rises and falls with a plodding guitar line backed by screeching effects and clashing percussion, creating a psych-heavy monotony that transfixes.  The droning intro of Endless Drops recalls Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anemone for just a second before a captivating bassline kicks in, and when Hecksher’s vocals enter the fray the ingredients add up to a dark, funereal moment. This is music for the walking dead.

Silver And Plastic marks a detour, with lazy acoustic guitars and minimal percussion laying the foundations for a softly sung touch of beauty. Hecksher’s whining vocals fit the track perfectly before a Newcombe-like electric guitar line spins an intricate web over the top.

You’ve Changed continues the space-rock dalliances in subdued, morbid form. Here, thick guitar fuzz depicts doom, accompanying Hecksher’s vocal dismay, with wah-wah licks and more electric guitar meanderings completing the gloom.

You will not find any upbeat rays of sunshine here, certainly none to match the band’s liveliest number – Shake The Dope Out, from 2003’s ‘Phoenix’ – and the final two tracks of the album do little to change the mood. It’s A Hard Fall is another slow dance through psych and closer Eyes Jam is six minutes of strangely captivating, effects-laden noise.

Only twice do songs surpass the six minute mark, though, and the majority could have benefited from being even longer given their quality. ‘Skull Worship’ is a gem of a psychedelic rock record that needs to be heard – over and over on repeat.

Hit 80s band going on UK tour with a promise to play songs from all 11 albums

The Cult Perform At O2 Academy Brixton In London

The Cult has announced that they are set to embark on a new tour in celebration of their 40th anniversary .

The rock band announced The 8424 tour, a name which references the year they formed in 1984 and the year of this gig, 2024.

Much like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , the band is set to perform some of their best hits from across their 11 albums – including She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, and Fire Woman.

The tour will travel across the UK and Europe, kicking off in the UK in October for 10 dates spanning into November.

While this is an exciting anniversary for the band who are back performing together, it’s not been a plain sailing road to get to this anniversary as the band has actually broken up twice in the past four decades.

The band first broke up in 1995 after 12 years together after it was reported that there were tensions between the two longest-serving members and main songwriters for the group, Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury.

In 1999 the band regrouped and released a seventh album Beyond Good and Evil in 2001. This was reportedly somewhat of a commercial flop which is what perhaps led to their second breakup.

Rock Band The Cult Performs In Paris

In 2002 the band broke up again and didn’t reunite until 2006. Since then the band has released four albums with the latest, Under the Midnight Sun, being released just two years ago in 2022.

Before settling on their current name, The Cult, the band also performed under the name Death Cult from 1983–1984.

In 2023, performing under the name Death Cult, guitarist Duffy and frontman Astbury, went on tour performing some of their best hits under the name Death Cult 8323.

The Cult performing

Guitarist Billy Duffy referenced the tour last year, which included a series of sold out shows at the Brixton Electric, as inspiration for the whole band coming together for this new tour.

‘Following up from the great energy of Death Cult 8323 shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to Cult 8424. CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!’

Fans who want to get their hands on tickets to see the band won’t have to wait too long as tickets go on general sale this Friday at 10am.

https://www.instagram.com/p/C6JaV6prOFT/?hl=en

The band appears to be following a popular trend among 80s hit artists as many other beloved bands from this era have announced comeback tours for 2024.

In March, Fairground attraction announced their return and that their four original members are reuniting not just for a tour, but for a brand new album to boot!

Similarly, the New Kids on the Block announced their return with their first album in over a decade.

Singer-songwriter Sananda Maitreya is also set to perform this summer . Formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby, the 80s artist will be giving a rare performance at the Love Supreme Jazz Festival.

I Just Realized Why King Charles's Haunting New Portrait Looks Familiar—and Now I Can't Unsee it

Earlier this month, King Charles unveiled a new royal portrait that was anything but subtle. From the hand of U.K. artist Johnathan Yeo, the painting of the 75-year-old monarch  showcases him sporting a traditional red Welsh Guards uniform amid a blaze of fire. Is he on fire? Is he emerging from fire? Is he the embodiment of fire himself? Honestly, I don't know, and I don't really care—I'm not a royal family buff who pores over conspiracy threads (although I do sometimes look to Kate for a fashion rule ).

The image of Charles's fiery face kept nagging at me. Why did this sleep paralysis demon seem so, well, familiar ?

And then it came to me: It reminded me of that insanely scary demonic portrait in Ghostbusters II .

Getty Images

The now cult-classic 1989 Ghostbusters II may have been a critical flop, but for some reason, that haunting painting of the sadistic Vigo the Carpathian, an evil 16th-century warlock (and no, not a real person—I had to look that up), stuck with me all these years, up until the unveiling of King Charles's scorched-earth portrait.

And unfortunately for the royal fam, I'm not the only one who made the leap from Buckingham Palace to river-of-slime overlord obsessed with Sigourney Weaver's baby. Per usual, ten steps ahead of me, the internet had already connected the dots .

Who wore it better? King Charles or Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2 pic.twitter.com/NH61S2Dlnk — .. (@adamanska) May 14, 2024

I'm not sure which surprises me more: that " the firm " was down for such a satanic-leaning portrayal? That portrait artist Yeo got away with such a massive sub-tweet? Or that I'm not the only millennial who's been so thoroughly impacted by a film that, as its Wikipedia page notes, "failed to replicate the cultural impact and following of  Ghostbusters . Although some critics retrospectively praised it,  Ghostbusters II  is generally seen as a poor follow-up to  Ghostbusters  and responsible for stalling the franchise for decades." I argue that Ghostbuster II's influence was so great that British officials should definitely be checking to make sure a river of slime isn't running beneath the entire city and into the Thames. Just a precaution.

Alas, now that I've addressed what was unnerving me, I can sleep at night and move on to other things...like the new portrait of Kate Middleton , which, now that I think of it, kinda reminds me of something I've seen before ...

Taylor Swift Eras tour: How to buy standing tickets for UK shows

Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the UK this year, with tickets to all of the singer's stadium shows having sold out in a matter of minutes.

  • 14:55, 23 MAY 2024

Taylor Swift is bringing her Eras Tour to the UK

After a long wait, Taylor Swift is finally bringing her Eras Tour to the UK in a few, and fans are buzzing with anticipation. However, when tickets first went on sale back in August 2023, they were snapped up almost immediately. Despite adding more stadium dates to her tour schedule, these additional thousands of tickets also sold out at lightning speed.

Since then, sharp-eyed fans have been monitoring Ticketmaster's official resale tickets - but the few that have become available have sold out incredibly quickly. As a result, many fans have taken matters into their own hands by exploring various online ticket reseller websites, including Viagogo and Vivid Seats.

By buying from these retailers, fans have managed to secure their ideal tickets - whether standing or seated - for their chosen concert. However, the downside is that the prices may vary from the original face value of the Taylor Swift tickets.

But, given that this is currently one of the only ways to gain entry to the concerts, it might be your best option. We've got a full rundown of ticket sellers below.

Taylor Swift fans looking to snag tickets for her much-anticipated Eras Tour have options beyond the official channels, with resale tickets popping up on various online platforms. While sites like Viagogo and Vivid Seats aren't "official" sellers, they do enforce stringent policies to ensure transactions are secure for both buyers and sellers.

Those eager to experience the Eras Tour live can pick their preferred seats or standing spots in the venue of their choice. However, there's a caveat: since ticket prices are determined by the sellers, some may find the cost of Taylor Swift tickets surprisingly steep.

These platforms cater to fans wanting to offload tickets they can no longer use. Viagogo has even reached out to reassure concert-goers, stating: " Viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the freedom to buy and sell tickets to their favourite live events, safely and securely, backed by a guarantee."

Ticketmaster also offers a resale option for those still searching for tickets. Here's the link you need: Ticketmaster Taylor Swift Eras Tour

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour UK: What to do and where to stay in each city

T he Eras Tour is set to sweep sequins across the UK from June – with that comes a swarm of Taylor Swift -centric tourism for four British cities.

With music from albums such as  Speak Now, Fearless  and her latest record , The Tortured Poets Society,  on the set list, superfan ‘Swifties’ are expected to flock to stadiums in Edinburgh , Cardiff , Liverpool and London for  the  concert of the summer – supported by rock band Paramore .

According to travel search company Kayak, there’s already been a significant increase in flight and hotel bookings to the three capitals and Liverpool. Data collected by the travel search engine found that flight prices have risen by an average of 38 per cent with hotel stays in the UK cities hosting The Eras Tour costing an average £365 per night during the concert dates.

In other ‘Swiftonomics’ news, data released by Barclays predicts that these shows will provide a £997 million uplift for the UK , and research from AirDNA, experts in rental data, said the concerts could add £9 million in cumulative revenue to the short-term rental market.

Here’s what to do and where to stay in each UK city to get your Eras Tour travel plans Ready For It – with plenty of Taylor Swift references to be found below.

Where are Taylor Swift’s UK tour locations?

Taylor Swift will take to the stage at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Scotland’s capital for three consecutive nights from 7 June.

Perfect your concert moves with a Taylor Swift dance class in Edinburgh to  Shake it Off  like Miss Americana .  Fizz Box  hosts 90-minute private lessons, led by a dance instructor, year-round from £24.50 per person.

Where to eat

Just 10 minutes from the stadium, classy community gastropub Dine Murrayfield promises elevated menus featuring chicken breast burgers, steak frites and ice cream from the Isle of Arran that will never go out of style...

Where to stay

With a boozy  Taylor Swift karaoke brunch  running from 7–9 June to celebrate Swift in Scotland, as well as stylish suites and its own nightlife, Le Monde Hotel Edinburgh on George Street is more than just a boutique hotel for Taylor superfans.

It’s one night only for Swift in Cardiff at the Principality Stadium on 18 June.

Several  Swiftogeddon  club nights take over Clwb Ifor Bach in the build-up to the Welsh leg of The Eras Tour if you have a  Blank Space  in your diary or haven’t managed to secure coveted concert tickets. The Botanist is also hosting a  Taylor Swift pre-party  on its terrace, with Taylor tunes and themed cocktails.

For pre-Taylor tapas, before you sample music from 11 of her albums, visit Bar 44 on Westgate Street for glasses of sherry, croquetas and smoked chorizo in the shadow of the stadium.

The luxe  Parkgate Hotel,  just a stone’s throw from the Principality, has elegance, indulgence and a  Swift-themed feast  come 18 June. Think Swift-style Wildest Dreams cocktails and a three-course menu from £48 per person before the main event.

Anfield Stadium welcomes The Eras Tour for three nights from 13 to 15 June for Liverpudlian Lovers.

Hold on to your 22 hats, the northern city will transform into Taylor Town between 8 and 16 June with a series of 11 art installations, an academic conference and even Swift-themed craft workshops curated by Liverpool’s culture team to entertain Swifties.

Liverpool city centre is no stranger to both trendy bistros and cult street-food vendors. Try Mowgli Street Food on Bold Street for tantalising Indian small plates – any Bejeweled outfit is bound to fit right in with the fairy lights.

Hotel Anfield not only has modern, comfortable bedrooms within walking distance of Anfield Stadium, but a Taylor Swift Festival across the concert dates. Picture a Totally Taylor tribute act, street food, glitter art and friendship bracelets await Swifties for just £5 per person.

It won’t be a  Cruel Summer  for Swifties in the south, with performances set for 21–23 June and 15, 16, 17, 19 and 20 August at Wembley Stadium before Swift says so long to London.

A walking tour around the capital with Tours by Locals guarantees you’ll hit all the lyrical highlights of  London Boy , including Hampstead Heath Park, the food stalls of Camden Market and buzzing Brixton nightlife in true Taylor style.

To pregame The Eras Tour with plates of pasta, Pasta Remoli ’s homemade offerings of saucy sausage ragu and antipasti are an irresistible six-minute walk from Wembley Stadium.

At  Generator London , concertgoers can enjoy friendship bracelets, Lover cocktails and pre-Eras Tour “Swifty-Oke” on performance dates in the capital. There’s even a Taylor Swift booking code to get 10 per cent off your next stay and a playlist of Taylor tunes all night long.

The Script announce new album & UK tour 2024!

The Script announce new album & UK tour 2024!

After 10 billion streams, 12 million album sales, six UK #1 albums and two Platinum-certified US singles, The Script return with the release of their new album ‘Satellites’ on 16th August 2024. Announced alongside news of a UK and European arena tour, the album has been previewed by the single ‘Both Ways’.

Tickets go on sale Friday 24th May at 9.30am on gigsandtours.com.

‘Both Ways’ sees The Script strike out with swaggering new energy, with boisterous hip-hop and funk rhythms providing the irresistible dance-floor vibes to complement the star quality of Danny’s voice. The result is frantically fun, an explosive cocktail that brings to mind Black Eyed Peas playing Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ and it is a world apart from anything The Script have previously released.

Glen Power says, “‘Both Ways’ is high energy, and maybe not what people might expect from us. But we’re The Script, and now we have something to prove: that there is life and light after the darkness. It’s why we’re coming fast and strong with that one.”

Vowing to pay tribute to their friend (Mark Sheehan) by continuing the band they had built together, vocalist Danny O’Donoghue returned to the studio and experimented in a number of ways: using 808s and playing with R&B-inspired sounds, focusing on upbeats sonics, and co-writing with hitmakers Steve Robson (Rascal Flatts, Take That) and Wayne Hector (One Direction, Nicki Minaj) as well as bandmate Glen Power. What emerged is ‘Satellites’, an utterly uplifting collection of songs that forges a new future for The Script while remembering that although Mark may no longer be here, he remains a vital part of everything that they do.

Danny explains, “The album cover is silhouettes of me, Glen and Ben Sargeant, our bassist, who's been with us from the beginning. Then we have a hooded silhouette, because the air of Mark is still there. He always will be, but it's also giving a tip of the hat to the future. It'll never be the same Script. We're just trying to get on and do what it is that we all feel is the next right thing to do and that’s to keep making more great music.”

‘Satellites’ is available to pre-order / pre-save HERE . The album is available as a limited edition hardback book CD, black vinyl and standard CD. The Script’s official artist store also offers a limited edition white vinyl, cassette and new merchandise.

After reuniting for select shows of collective grieving and joyous communion with The Script family in 2023, the band are about to head out on a massive tour supporting P!nk across the UK, Europe and America before returning to big stages of their own this autumn.  This will see them play to over 2 million fans around the world this year. Tour support comes from very special guest Tom Walker on all dates except Berlin, Munich and Milan.

The shows are:

13th - UK, Belfast, SSE Arena

15th - Ireland, Dublin, 3Arena

18th - UK, Cardiff, Utilita Arena

19th - UK, Bournemouth, International Centre

20th - UK, Nottingham, Motorpoint Arena
