MIMAROPA (Region IV-B Profile)

MIMAROPA is an administrative region of the Philippines. It is one of two regions of the Philippines having no land border with another region, Eastern Visayas being the other, and is designated as Region IV-B. The name is a portmanteau combining the names of its provinces, which are: Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan. The region is also more formally known as Southern Tagalog Islands.

Calapan City is the regional center; however, most regional government offices like the Department of Public Works are situated in Quezon City, Metro Manila.

On May 23, 2005, Palawan and the highly urbanized city of Puerto Princesa were moved to Western Visayas by Executive Order No. 429. However, on August 19, 2005, President Arroyo issued Administrative Order No. 129 to hold the earlier EO 429 in abeyance pending a review.

Brief History

Executive Order No. 103, dated May 17, 2002, divided Region IV (Southern Tagalog) into Region IV-A (CALABARZON) and Region IV-B (MIMAROPA).

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Executive Order 103 on May 17, 2002 which subdivided the Southern Tagalog provinces which comprised Region IV into two regions – Regions IV- A and IV-B, to promote efficiency in the government, accelerate social and economic development and improve public services. Region IV-A is now known as CALABARZON- which stands for the provinces of Cavite, LAguna,BAtangas, Rizal and QueZON). Region IV-B on the other hand, is now known as MIMAROPA which stands for the island provinces comprising the region - MIndoro (Oriental and Occidental), MArinduque, ROmblon and PAlawan. EO103 also transferred the province of Aurora to Region III in Central Luzon.

Executive Order 429 moved Palawan to Region VI on May 23, 2005. After this, Region IV-B began to be called MIMARO instead of MIMAROPA.

However, Palaweños criticized the move, citing a lack of consultation, with most residents in Puerto Princesa City and nearly all municipalities preferring to stay with Region IV-B. Consequently, Administrative Order No. 129 was issued on August 19, 2005 to address this backlash. This order directed the abeyance of Executive Order 429 pending the approval of an implementation plan for the orderly transfer of Palawan from MIMAROPA to Region VI. As of 2012, it is not clear whether or not the transfer of Palawan to region VI is still considered pending by the Philippine government. As of 2012, the National Statistical Coordinating Board of the Philippines continues to list Palawan province as part of the MIMAROPA region.

The 2010 Philippine Census of Population continued to report the Region IV name as Mimaropa, and continued to list the province of Palawan as part of that region.

In 2007, MIMAROPA's economy surged by 9.4%, making it the fastest growing region in the country in that year. It was aided by robust growth in the industrial sector which grew by 19.1% from -6.1% in 2006.

MIMAROPA experienced a big slowdown in 2006, posting a decelerated growth of 2.3% from a 6.4% increase in 2005. This resulted mainly from the slump in the industry sector, which shrunk by 5.4% in 2006 from its 10.8% increase in 2005.

The agriculture, forestry, and fishing sector, which contributed 42.1% to the total regional economy, grew by 9.1% in 2006, accelerating from 3.2% the previous year. The higher production of palay, corn, other crops, livestock and fishery resulted in the accelerated growth in the total agriculture and fishery sector.

The industry sector, which contributed 38.3% to the region’s total economy, was the second largest contributor next to agriculture. Its decline of 5.4% was largely attributed to the decrease in the mining and quarrying subsector, which went down by 15.4% due to the reduced production of natural gas in Palawan. Mining and quarrying contributed 16.6% to the total regional economy. The positive growth in the electricity and water, construction and manufacturing subsectors were not able to compensate to the drop in the mining and quarrying subsector.

The service sector, on the other hand, posted an accelerated growth of 5.1%, which was attributed to the increase in the TCS, finance, private services, government services and trade subsectors, which managed to post accelerated growths of 6.0%, 5.5%, 5.1%, 5.1% and 4.7%, respectively. The other subsector, however, had a decelerated growth due to the slowdown in the ownership of dwelling.

Scenic Spots

There are many scenic spots in the MIMAROPA. Some of them are the Bathala Cave, Balanacan Bay and Tres Reyes Islands in the province of Marinduque; the White Island in Mindoro; Bonbon Beach in Romblon; and, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and El Nido Marine Reserve Park in Palawan.

Tagalog is widely spoken in the region. In Marinduque, Tagalog is spoken with a unique blend of Bicolano and Visayan languages. Aside from Tagalog, there are also other major languages being used by the people in different provinces and localities. In the interior of Mindoro, various languages are spoken by Mangyans, and they include Iraya, Alangan, Tawbuid, Hanunoo, Tadyawan, Buhid, and Ratagnon. The latter is a Visayan language with less than three speakers. Romblon, being near the Visayas, has three main languagues that belong to Visayan language family namely, Romblomanon, Asi, and Onhan. Palawan, on the other hand, has its own set of native languages such as Cuyonon, Calamian Tagbanwa and Palawano that are still spoken by significant numbers of people.

Region IV-B: MIMAROPA

Somewhere in the middle west of the Philippines lies a region endowed with abundant natural resources, mysterious natural wonders, and culturally diverse peoples. This is Region IV-B. This is MIMAROPA.

  MIMAROPA is an acronym derived from the provinces of the region, namely: MIndoro (Oriental and Occidental), MArinduque, ROmblon, and PAlawan.  Located at 10.67º N and 119.5º E, this region is only one of the two regions in the Philippines which have no land borders, the other one being Eastern Visayas. It is rather bounded by different bodies of water: West Philippine Sea on the west, Sulu Sea on the south, Sibuyan Sea on the east, and Tayabas Bay on the north. The entire region only has two cities, Puerto Princesa City in Palawan and Calapan City in Mindoro Oriental, with Calapan City being the administrative center of the region.

BRIEF HISTORY OF MIMAROPA

MIMAROPA was not always MIMAROPA. Back in the days, it was part of a larger region, the Southern Luzon region, which also happened to be the largest region in the Philippines. The Southern Luzon region was comprised of today’s MIMAROPA and CALABARZON together with the province of Aurora. Due to the region spanning large distances, accessibility to regional centers and distribution of goods and public services were difficult back then. With that, former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo decided to make a move.

On May 17, 2002, GMA issued Executive Order No. 103, which divided the large region into two smaller regions: Region IV-A, to be known as CALABARZON, and Region IV-B, now known as MIMAROPA. Aside from this, the province of Aurora now belonged to the Central Luzon Region. This executive order aimed to “promote efficiency in the Government, accelerate social and economic development and improve public services” and also to, “further accelerate the social and economic development of the provinces and cities comprising Region IV and improve the delivery of public services”. This amendment was wise, and it proved to be effective in improving the functions and services of the government in the two regions.

However, come 2005, GMA made a move that was not quite thought out. On May 23, 2005, she issued Executive Order No. 429, which ordered to reorganize the Western Visayas Region and include Palawan in order to promote more efficiency in the distribution of government services. But as much as she aimed well for the province and the region, her move was criticized by the Palawan residents because she did not even consult them. After receiving much criticism and negative feedback, she released Executive Order 129, putting Executive Order No. 429 in abeyance. This temporary suspension, however, is still not addressed as the Philippine administration has changed and come and go. And so to this day, Palawan is still considered to be a part of Region IV-B, and together, they remain to be MIMAROPA.

THE PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY OF MIMAROPA

The Region of MIMAROPA has a total land area of 2,745,601 ha, which is about 9.15% of the Philippines’ land area. About 1/5 of its land area is an agricultural land area while the rest of the region is forests, mountain ranges, and coastal areas. With the forests and coastal areas greatly outnumbering the agricultural area, the region is very rich in biodiversity, not only terrestrial biodiversity but also marine biodiversity. Before we begin to discuss the topography and land cover of the region, let us first discuss the climate.

Being a region with the provinces separated by waters, the whole region does not experience a single climate but rather, three different climates.

The western part of Palawan, together with Mindoro Occidental, experiences the Type I climate. This climate is dry from November to April, and wet for the rest of the year. The controlling factor for this climate is the topography of the area. With the central part of Palawan being mountainous, the western part of Palawan is protected from the easterlies. However, the area is open to the effects brought by the south west monsoon and the cyclonic storms. This is also true for Mindoro Occidental, where it is sheltered from the trade winds by the mountainous ranges in the middle of the island. However, it too is open to the effects brought by the south west monsoon and cyclonic storms.

The eastern part of Palawan, together with Romblon, experiences the Type III climate. Unlike the two pronounced seasons in the Type I climate, this has no pronounced seasons but it is relatively dry from November to April and wet for the rest of the year. It has a short dry season ranging from one to three months. Areas experiencing this climate are only partly sheltered from the trade winds, if not at all. It is also open to the south west monsoon and is also frequently affected by cyclonic storms.

The last climate type being experienced by the MIMAROPA region is the Type IV climate. This climate is experienced by Marinduque and Mindoro Oriental. With this climate, rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year.

As a region composed of island provinces, MIMAROPA has no distinct topographical characteristics, but rather it varies from one province to another. Its varied landforms consist of coastal, low lying areas, and interiors composed of rolling hills and mountain ranges. In fact, the second highest mountain in the Philippines, Mt. Halcon, can be found in MIMAROPA. It is a part of the mountain range serving as the boundary between Mindoro Oriental and Mindoro Occidental.

The island of Mindoro is generally mountainous, with the Mindoro mountain range running from the northwest to the southwest of the island, conveniently dividing the island into its two provinces: Mindoro Oriental and Mindoro Occidental. But aside from its mountainous interior, the island also consists of coastal areas and lake areas.

Romblon is considered to be mountainous, with more than 40% of its land having a slope of more than 50%. Palawan has a mountainous interior, and narrow coastal areas which is very irregular and indented. Meanwhile, Marinduque is also composed of undulated hills and mountainous terrain.

The region’s land cover is composed of 17 different categories of land. However about 64% of this is considered as forest land and only 36% are considered alienable and disposable land. The dominant type of land covers include: Closed Forest, Broadleaved, Open Forest, Broadleaved, Cultivated Annual Crop and Perennial Crop, Natural Grasslands, and Wooded Shrub lands and Grasslands.

Aside from its forests and fields, the region of MIMAROPA also has 31,850 ha of water bodies. Mindoro Oriental, which contains the Apo Reef, contains the largest water area in the region with its 13,627 ha of water while Romblon owns the smallest with only 3,618 ha.

THE HUMAN GEOGRAPHY OF MIMAROPA

Population:

As of the 2010 census, the region has a total population of 2,744,671 representing 2.93% of the total population of the Philippines which was 93.44 million back then. Even with the population increase of about 200,000 people, the region remains to be one of three regions with the lowest population, bigger only than the CARAGA region and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

  The region of MIMAROPA contributed 1.65% to the country’s GDP. In 2013, the GRDP of MIMAROPA grew by 1.68%. The Agriculture, Fishing, Hunting, and Forestry sector contributed the most to the region’s GRDP totalling 43.2%. This is an increase from the 2009 data where the Industry sector leads with 42.16% contribution to the GRDP.

Aside from the region’s biological diversity, the region is also culturally diverse, with each province housing multiple indigenous groups of its own.

Mangyan is the generic term for the eight indigenous groups in Mindoro. These indigenous groups include the Hanunuo, the Alangan, the Tau-Buid, the Bangon, the Tadyawan, the Ratagnon, the Iraya, and the Buhid. Each tribal group has its own language, customs, and rituals. Their population is estimated at 100,000.

In Palawan there are many cultural groups as well: Cuyonon & Agutayon, considered the ethnic elite of the province; Muslim groups such as Molbog, Jama Mapun and Tausug live in the southern coast; Tagbanuas the largest indigenous group inhabiting the central portion; And there are even smaller cultural communities like Pala’wan, Taut batu, Batak, Ken-uy and Kalamian.

Romblon, because it is near the Visayas has three main languages, Romblomanon, Asi and Onhan – they belong to the Visayan language family.

Marinduque has no indigenous groups except Tagalogs, but many descendants of the Asi tribe live in the southern part of the island and they are known to still cling to their roots in Banton. Tagalog spoken in Marinduque has been carefully studied and it has been concluded that the language spoken here is the root from which modern national forms of speech have sprung. (1914 study by Cecilio Lopez).

Aside from being the roots of our modern form of language, Marinduque is also home to Moriones festival, an annual festival celebrated during the holy week. With this, the province is popularly called “the Lenten Capital of the Philippines”. In the festival, townspeople dress up as roman soldiers and other biblical figures to represent their religion.

TOURIST SPOTS

The region of MIMAROPA has all kinds of scenic spots one can ask for. From forests, to white sand beaches, to rock formations and mountain peaks, to diverse marine life– this region has it all. Here are some of the most known spots in MIMAROPA that is hard to miss.

PROVINCIAL ISSUES OF MIMAROPA

As beautiful a region as MIMAROPA is, it does not go without its problem and issues. Each province has an issue of its own. Here, we see what these issues are.

Mindoro Island is one of the great havens of biodiversity in the country. The island can be divided into two provinces: Occidental Mindoro in the west, with the capital San Jose, and Oriental Mindoro in east, with the capital Calapan. The island takes pride in one of the most famous tourist attractions in the country. Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, with its white beaches and various must-tries like surfing, jet skiing, etc. is in “competition” with Boracay Island in showing the beauty of Philippine coastlines to millions of local and foreign tourists annually.

It is home to many endemic species – that is, those only found in this island. Some notable examples of creatures found here are: the dwarf water buffalo (more popularly known as ‘tamaraw’), the Philippine warty pig, the Philippine deer, and the critically endangered Illin hairy-tailed cloud rat and the Mindoro shrew.

However, because of the lack of law enforcement, activities threatening wildlife and even local communities such as mining, deforestation, poaching, and kaingin system are still done in some parts of the island. Some companies also claim parcels of land as theirs in order to conduct extractive activities in them, but much of the lands are in fact owned by the indigenous Mangyan people as their ancestral lands. The Mangyan people have been denouncing extractive activities done in the island, which they claim to be destructive of the habitats of different animals and their ancestral lands, but the governments of the two Mindoro provinces often legalize such activities. The Mangyan people primarily complain, that the problem of deforestation does not come from illegal logging, but from legal logging.

Marinduque is a group of islands island located at the geographical heart of the Philippines, and is therefore often termed as the ‘heart’ of the Philippines. Its capital is the municipality of Boac, located at the western part of the main island.

It lies between Tayabas Bay to the north and Sibuyan Sea to the south. It is located south and west of Quezon, east of Mindoro, and north of Romblon.

It is known for the Moriones Festival, one of the most famous religious festivals in the country. It is done during the Holy Week, and is done in depiction of the life, struggles, and death of Jesus Christ. The Festival is also known for the masks of various faces, especially of the Roman soldiers responsible for making Jesus Christ.

In 1996, Marcopper Mining Disaster occurred in Marinduque, and is considered as one of the largest mining disasters in the Philippines. Prior to the disaster, the main industry of the province was mining and is concentrated in the municipality of Sta. Cruz. It produces about 13% of the nation’s copper, 2% of its gold and 10% of its silver. On the hand, abundant metallic minerals that are present in the province are iron, lead and zinc, molybdenum, pyrite and manganese.

Romblon is a group of islands lying in the middle of the Sibuyan Sea, and is one of the smallest provinces in the country. Its capital is of the same name, Romblon. Also known as the marble capital of the Philippines, the province is renowned for high-quality marble quarried in it, and various products made out of marble. In fact, one can buy marble figurines and homewares of different appearance and size in markets in the locality.

A spot yet to debut as a popular tourist attraction, Romblon also takes pride in its islets, sandbars, and beaches. However, it has not yet matched the popularity of the beaches of its neighboring provinces like Mindoro and Palawan, but much are yet to be discovered. It brings good in the sense that much of the coastline of the province are not yet exploited for commercial use.

Romblon is the poorest province in the region and is one of the poorest provinces in the country. The primary produce of Romblon are abaca, copra, and rice. In 2009, it was listed as the 7th poorest province in the country, with only 43% household incidence. A good part of the population of Romblon generally belongs to the middle class when other factors such as longevity, education, and access to basic resources are considered. Also, Romblon has a low per capita population. However, it is considered one of the poorest provinces because the main factor considered in household incidence is income. The low income distribution in the province may be generally attributed to their crop production.

As previously mention, one the primary crops produced in the province is copra. However, in the last few years, there has been a decline in the price of copra. Before, copra production was able to sustain the education of many in the province. But now, farmers and local businessmen do not think it is not sustainable to invest in copra production due to the decline in its price. In relation to this, some say that the decline in copra price was brought upon by El Niño, while others think it is due to investment in the palm oil industry that the coconut industry has gotten neglected.

Palawan is the largest (and maybe the longest, too) province in the Philippines in terms of area of jurisdiction with 1,489,655 ha., equivalent to about 31% of MIMAROPA’s total land area. The province also includes Busuanga and Coron Island on its northeast. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, which is a chartered city independent of the provincial government.

Palawan is the only province who has little to none volcanic activity. Resting on granitic continental crust, land is composed of rocks generally different from those found in the rest of the country, which lies on basaltic oceanic crust. Running from northeast to southwest, its orientation is noticeably different from almost the rest of the country.

Perhaps one of the most environmentally rich places in the Philippines, the province is home to two UNESCO world heritage sites: Tubbataha Reef and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. It is, in fact, dubbed as the ‘Philippines’ Last Ecological Frontier’ due to its biodiversity unmatched by other provinces. The UNESCO also declared the province as a ‘Man and Biosphere’ reserve, owing to its uniqueness on all aspects, whether terrestrial and marine, not only in biodiversity, but in its physical and human geography.

Besides its biodiversity and physical beauty, Palawan has also shown cultural and historical significance. Manunggul Jar, a burial urn and one of the most famous cultural artifacts in the country, and the remains of the ‘Tabon Man’, previously thought to be the oldest human inhabitant of the archipelago, were found here.

However, globalizing economy has paved way for many places in Palawan to be opened and exploited as tourist spots as part of an aggressive policy to accelerate tourism, providing living for the locals and boosting the economy, but also causing disturbance on its natural ecosystems. For example, many areas along the coastline are now being converted into beaches and resorts, which increasingly become popular as alternative to Boracay Island. Ecosystems in the locality are being more susceptible to disturbance brought upon by these activities.

Its land is actually rich in different minerals and metals, such as nickel, iron, chromite, copper, manganese, etc. However, many large-scale mining companies have been given licenses to mine and exploit parcels of land in Palawan, eventually dumping their residual waste into Palawan’s waters, thereby harming the marine biodiversity.

Various economic activities like these have dispersed indigenous peoples of Palawan, who originally depend on their ancestral lands due to economic and cultural reasons. These indigenous groups are: Cuyonon, Agutayon, Tagbanua (the largest); also, Muslim groups such as Molbog, Jama Mapun, and Tausug live at the southern coast of the province, having migrated from neighboring provinces such as Sulu and Tawi-tawi.

Lastly, the province also holds jurisdiction on the disputed Kalayaan Group of Islands in the West Philippine Sea, including its component reefs and atolls. Some islands of the group even comprise one town, a few nautical miles from the mainland. This island group is heavily claimed by countries including the Philippines, China, Vietnam, etc. With its case still being heard by the International Court of Arbitration against China, the country has already initiated aggressive moves of land reclamation and building military and civil facilities in its reefs, building tension between claimant countries and severely damaging the surrounding marine ecosystem. The Chinese Coast Guard, with its ships deployed in the vicinity of the island group, have also repeatedly harassed local fishermen and Filipino soldiers patrolling the area.

REGIONAL ISSUES OF MIMAROPA

Because of its nature, MIMAROPA has experienced a general difficulty in functioning optimally as a region. Its provinces are several nautical miles away from each other by sea, specifically Palawan which is farther from Mindoro, Romblon, and Marinduque Islands.

Despite seeing rise in tourism over the past decade, only Puerto Princesa City actually has an airport available for commercial aviation; other provinces such as Romblon are yet to open their airports. Because of this, the primary way to reach these provinces is by sea, and is often dangerous due to the rainy weather in the country.

These islands’ extensive coastlines have proved to be a vital source of living and general economic boost, through tourism, as they are promoted by the media and various institutions as growing competition to primary tourist destinations such as Boracay Island. However, this leads to the aggressive conversion of coastlines for commercial use (such as resorts), thus posing a threat to the local marine wildlife. Such activities may also cause alterations to the ecosystems present around. Solid and liquid waste materials from commercial activities may also pollute the surrounding waters.

A considerable population of MIMAROPA is composed of indigenous peoples and peasants living in the countryside. There are relatively more indigenous peoples in the region than in surrounding regions (Bicol and CALABARZON). It can be attributed to the fact that the provinces are geographically separated from the centers of political and religious power, and thus weren’t “civilized” by the colonizers long ago. They still prove to be a strong source of indigenous knowledge and culture in the country, which are being protected through the efforts of various groups.

However, deforestation, mining, kaingin system, and land grabbing remain as primary threats to their lives and their ancestral lands despite the existence of the Indigenous People’s Rights Act and several laws protecting natural reserves. Such threats may further be intensified by globalization and aggressive policies towards a tourist economy in the region.

Finally, being located in the central part of the Philippines, MIMAROPA has also been susceptible to typhoons. Because of its isolation from the mainland Luzon, it takes time before substantial aid reaches the provinces from the centers, in the aftermath of calamities. In 2008, Typhoon ‘Frank’ capsized the M/V ‘Princess of the Stars’ off the coast of Romblon, killing 67 people and leaving 747 missing. In 2013, Palawan was also hit by the Super Typhoon ‘Haiyan’, the strongest tropical cyclone which hit the Philippines in recorded history.

The wonders of mimaropa.

Mimaropa today has become an economic and tourism powerhouse in the Philippines. The region’s high production of rice, corn, and other crops, fishery, and livestock increased the growth in the agriculture and fishery sector. Its industry sector, meanwhile, contributed 38.3 percent to the region’s total economy. 

The output of its domestic industries and cross-border migration also made Mimaropa one of the fastest growing region in the country. As of 2015, the whole population of the Mimaropa region is 2.9 percent of the country’s population, with Palawan having 849,000; followed by Oriental Mindoro with 844,000; Occidental Mindoro with 487,000; Romblon with 293,000; the only urbanized city of Puerto Princesa with 255,000; and Marinduque with 235,000 for a total of 2,963,360.

Innovative Thinking Danilo Intong, Mimaropa’s newly-appointed tourism director, said he wants to increase their contribution to the total Philippine tourist arrival chart. Palawan had already contributed one million, but he wishes the number would soar as they tap into new markets abroad through promotions.

Intong has a discerning and creative mind. He aims on developing new tourism products throughout his term as part of his development plan for the region.

“We should think out of the box,” he said in an article by Roger Pe of Business Mirror. “We should think, creatively, of other things because there are other ways of creating new products.”

Right now, he is focused on Romblon since it is an emerging tourist destination that is easily accessible from Manila and South Luzon provinces.

A Piece Of Heaven Situated 15km off the southwest coast of Luzon is Oriental Mindoro. With its unspoiled scenic beauty and bountiful resources, this province offers a myriad of opportunities for nature-lovers, adventurers, and culture enthusiasts alike.

Mindoro’s most famous tourist attraction, Puerto Galera (port of galleons), is the oldest settlement on the island. Boasting of breathtaking landscapes, pristine beaches, and thriving undersea gardens, they continue to attract tourists and travelers into exploring this beautiful town.

You can find Mt. Halcon, the third highest peak in the country, and Lake Naujan, the fifth largest lake in the country, in this province as well.

The island of Mindoro is also home to the Mangyan, one of the major ethnic groups in the Philippines.

Dive Into Paradise A province that glimmers with natural luster, Occidental Mindoro lies beyond the southwest coast of Batangas. It is the home to the endangered Tamaraw.

The town of Mamburao is the province’s capital and seat of government; meanwhile, San Jose is the center of commerce and entertainment. Lubang Island, along with islands of Ambil, Golo, and Cabra, boasts of fine white sand beaches.

Located at the center of the province is Sablayan, the largest municipality, which has its own municipal fish port where the trading and shipping of produce to surrounding areas happen. A haven of biodiversity, Sablayan is the jump-off point to Apo Reef Marine Park which is dubbed as the diving mecca of the Philippines.

Declared as a national park and forest reservation, Mt. Iglit can also be found in Mindoro.

Rich In Culture Blessed with fertile soil, rich waters, and precious mineral deposits, the province of Marinduque sits at the center of the Philippine archipelago. It is best known for its unique and colorful cultural traditions such as the Moriones, a colorful tableau that depicts the life and death of Christ during the Lenten season.

Marinduque also stages other festivities that include Kalesayahan sa Gasan every August, Haring Kalabaw Festival in Sta. Cruz, and the Bila-bila in Boac where street dancers represent butterflies.

Aside from its heritage sites and old churches like the Boac and Sta. Cruz Catholic Church, Marinduque has its own share of natural attractions as well. Its underwater haven presents shipwrecks, excellent coral formations, and fringing reefs for snorkeling. The province also possesses many caves that are yet to be documented and fully explored. Bathala Caves, the most famous cave system in the province, are multi-tiered and complex network of seven mostly uncharted caves.

Nature’s Great Wealth Touted as the Marble Capital of the Philippines, Romblon offers marble products on par with the best in the world.

But Romblon isn’t just about marbles, it also boasts of natural resources and unspoiled beaches. Its lush lands and seascapes also offer travelers opportunities for adventure such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and trekking.

The province is also known for its Biniray Festival celebrated every January. Famed for its carnival atmosphere, merrymaking, dancing, and parade of exceptional costumes. There’s also a flotilla of vessels that circle around Romblon Bay seven times, depicting the Spaniard’s attempts of leaving the shores with the commissioned Sto. Nino statue on board.

World’s Best Island For a province with numerous accolades as the country’s cleanest and greenest city, Palawan, which means “The Land of Beautiful Safe Harbor,” certainly lives up to its name. Its pristine islands, forests, and clear waters provide a beautiful haven for visitors seeking repose in nature. It has also been dubbed as the “Last Ecological Frontier” in honor of its one-of-a-kind ecological balance.

Its natural wonders, outstanding biodiversity of marine life, and unique flora and fauna are the main attractions in the province. Its sanctuaries, hidden lagoons, limestone cliffs, and beaches which include (but are not limited to) El Nido, Coron, Malampaya Sound, and Tabon caves offer visitors an indelible experience.

Palawan is also the home to two UNSECO World Heritage Sites: the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, a marine park that has such a rich marine life, and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which was also declared as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Vibrant Festivities The provinces of Occidental and Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan came together to celebrate the annual Mimaropa festival, this time in Odiongan, Romblon, last November 20-25, 2017.

Locals, guests, and visitors witnessed the street parade, colorful street dances, and the dance showdown held at the Odiongan Sports Complex.

The participants of Calapan City for the dance showdown were awarded third place, meanwhile the participants of Puerto Princesa got the second place. The grand winner for this year’s dance showdown were from Occidental Mindoro.

ROMBLON TOURIST SPOTS – This province is at the heart of the PH archipelago in the Luzon region and these are the attractions of this place.

Are you going to Romblon and wondering where to go and what tourist spots to see?

The capital of the province of Romblon is Romblon and this province is a part of the MIMAROPA region or Region 4B. Apart from being famous for its marble industry, this province also has a rich history and is home to a lot of white sand beaches.

• Bonbon Beach This must be on top of your list if you wish to see real paradise. This is four kilometers away from the town. This beach boasts a 2-kilometer stretch of white sandbar.
• Carabao Island  Found south of Tablas Island and north of Boracay Island is the Carabao Island. This place has powdery beaches, caves, and cliffs where adventure seekers can go cliff diving.
• Cresta de Gallo Island  This stretch of sand lies off the southeastern coast of Sibuyan Island. This is among the best sandbars in the country the reason why this is something you should not miss.
• Mount Guiting-Guiting  This mountain stands at around 2,058 meters above sea level. If you want the thrill and adventure, the hike to the peak of this mountain will take 4 days and once you are on top, you will be rewarded with the most beautiful view.
• Cantingas River This is found in the southwestern region of Sibuyan Island. The water is clean, among the cleanest inland rivers in the Philippines, and you will be surrounded by lush greenery.
• Tiamban Beach Among the most popular beaches here is Tiamban Beach which is just five kilometers away from the town proper. There are some resorts around the area if you wish to stay overnight.
• Fort San Andres  Just like the other  historical spots in the Philippines , this structure is made of coral stones and bricks. It has a panoramic view of Romblon’s coast and this place is among the National Cultural Treasures of the country.
• Blue Hole  This is a famous spot for diving. This tunnel runs around 27 to 32 meters and its walls are a home for corals and several fish species.
• St. Joseph Cathedral  This historical landmark is also called Romblon Cathedral built in the 15th century. Throughout the years, the church underwent several repairs and reconstruction.

Touted as, “The Heart of the Philippines,” the island is your ultimate getaway for fun, thrill, and adventure. Its ridge to reef landscape offers an amazing diversity of natural wonders.

1. Gasan Butterfly Garden

Imagine standing in a lush setting as thousands of colorful butterflies fly all around. That’s exactly how you will feel when you visit the Butterfly Garden, one of the famous tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. The town, in fact, is the butterfly capital of the Philippines.

2. Maniwaya Island

Maniwaya Island boasts one of the longest stretches of powdery white sands in the province. You’ll feel like you are in the famed Boracay when you come here.

Add to that a mesmerizing view of the crystal-clear waters that are so inviting. Because the surrounding seas teem with marine life, you can snorkel here all day long.

From here, you can also check out the stunning Palad Sandbar and the enchanting Ungab Rock Formations. You’ll never run out of things to do here. That is why it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Sta Cruz, Marinduque.

3. Kawa-Kawa Falls

Have you ever thought of climbing from the top of a waterfall towards its deep pool? That may sounds scary but thrilling at the same time. So, if you want to have such kind of adrenaline-pumping experience, hike your way to Kawa-Kawa Falls.

Kawa-Kawa falls is only around 15 feet high with a circular and deep catch basin. Try climbing the cliff and plunge or dive your way to the pool. Just make sure you know how to swim and you hit the deep part. I do that always wherever waterfall I go.

The crystal-clear and cold waters will surely give you that soothing experience you’re after. Swim around the pool as you relish the lush surroundings.

4. Poctoy Underwater Museum

Poctor Underwater Museum is near the Poctoy White Beach. It’s a man-made attraction set on a natural setting. When you dive here, you’ll find a statue of the iconic Morion.

The project was realized through the initiative of Cong. Lord Allan Velasco together with Marinduque drivers.

5. Malbog Sulfur Spring

Aside from the powdery beaches, you might want to have a relaxing moment at the Malbog Sulfur Spring. The sulfuric waters emanate from the slopes of Mount Malindig, an inactive volcano.

Not only will you enjoy the sticky, thermal waters but also experience the healing properties. Research shows that sulfuric springs can cleanse one of skin illnesses as well as colds. The place is also a good hang out especially for families and friends.

• Location/Jump-off: Brgy Malbog, Buenavista, Marinduque
• Entrance Fee: Php 50 per person, Php 30 for Senior, PWD, Children

6. Poctoy White Beach

Another ideal spot for relaxation is Poctoy White Beach. As its name suggests, it also features white sands that extends for more than a kilometer.

One could not also help it but just stare at the mesmerizing waters. I bet expert swimmers would eventually take the plunge upon seeing the turquoise waters.

From the beach, you can also view the towering Mount Malindig, one of the hiking tourist spots in Marinduque. It’s a public beach so expect large crowd especially during weekends and holidays. But don’t worry; you’ll enjoy the rustic sceneries here.

It is one of the best tourist attractions in Marinduque.

7. Mount Malindig

For adventurers like me, the journey is sometimes not enough when no hiking is involved. So if you’re like that, trek your way to the majestic Mount Malindig.

Because the trails run on mostly gently-sloping terrains, assaulting Mount Malindig works for newbie hikers.

Along the way, expect to see unique flora and fauna species as the mountain is a critical biodiversity area. As you reach the higher elevations, you’ll witness alluring mossy forests.

While atop, you’ll catch a panoramic view of the rolling landscapes, beaches, and islands of Marinduque.

Hopefully, ecotourism will help sustain the rich flora and fauna of Mt Malindig.

• Elevation/Height: 1,157 meters above sea level
• Entrance Fee: Php 45 per person
• Guide Fee: Php 500 for a maximum of 4 pax

8. Mongpong Island

Mongpong Island is one of the farthest tourist spots in Marinduque. But that’s all the more reason to have a peek especially if you’re into less touristy destinations.

A known landmark here is Ungab Rock located on the eastern part of the island. The rock formation resembles the shape of an arch and it towers for almost 100 feet.

From where Ungab Rock stands, you’ll find a long stretch of creamy-white beach. Although it is remote, some people live here. You can have meaningful interactions with them, learn about their culture, and share stories.

9. Boac Cathedral

Boac Cathedral is one of the historical tourist spots in Marinduque. It dates back to the Spanish colonizers who initiated the construction of the Cathedral. It’s known for its Gothic inspired architecture with resemblance to the churches in Latin America.

During the revolution against the Spaniards, Filipino warriors would often come here to seek blessing before heading out for war. The church also saw the blessing of the Philippine Revolutionary Flag in 1899.

10. Bathala Cave

Chasing for a memorable spelunking experience? Don’t miss visiting Bathala Cave system where you’ll discover 7 caves in all. Only four of these, however, are open for tourism. These caves are: Church Cave, Cemetery Cave, Python Cave, and Secret Cave. Each of this has unique feature to offer.

My favorite is the Python Cave which is literally home to several pythons, one of the biggest snake species. You can spot them as you explore the cave. But don’t worry. They are harmless as long as you follow proper practice. The locals are experts so for safety, they’ve got you covered.

11. Tres Reyes Islands

If you’re chasing secluded tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque, visit the Tres Reyes Islands. There are three islands composing it namely, Baltazar Island, Melchor Islands, and Gaspar Island.

Craving for an amazing snorkeling experience? Check out Baltazar Island which thrives with endemic marine species as well as colorful coral reefs. Want to try cliff diving or jumping? Visit the Melchor Island, known for its scenic cliffs along its shores.

Then there’s Gaspar Island which is the biggest but it has only limited beaches. Nevertheless, there’s just nothing like it staying here because of the incredibly tranquil setting.

12. Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden

That’s right! You’ll not only find beautiful sunflowers in Benguet or Baguio City. You catch sight of them at Mang Illeol Sunflower Garden. It’s not as big as those found in Benguet, however, it still pays off visiting it for a Benguet-feel like experience here.

13. Bagumbungan Cave

Another favorite spelunking tourist spot in Marinduque is Bagumbungan Cave. Inside, you’ll find a variety of fascinating stalactite and stalagmite rock formations. Some are so bizarre-looking that you’ll think you’re in another planet.

Aside from rock formations, the cave features small waterfalls and a brook containing multiple pools. Take a look at these pools and you’ll find different marine creatures such as eels, catfish, shrimps, and crabs.

You can also chance on owls and bats inhabiting the cave. That just goes to show that Bagumbungan Cave remains pristine, therefore, there is the need to protect it.

• Entrance Fee: Php 150 to Php 300 per person
• Fee for Certificate: Php 50 (Optional)
• Minimum Pax for a Guide: 2

14. St Joseph Parish

Another ideal spot for prayer and reflection is at St Joseph Parish, now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Gasan, Marinduque. It’s a huge church that can cater to thousands of worshippers in a given Sunday.

Aside from its colonial design, the church’s ceiling showcases patterns of the Buri fan, a popular handicraft in the area. A few meters from the church, you’ll find a garden where you can have a tranquil retreat. You can also see here the old bells of the church.

15. Luzon Datum of 1911

The Luzon Datum is a stone marker, nestled on a site that is considered the very center of the Philippines. Also called Station Balanacan, the stone marker sits on top of a hill referred to as Mt Mataas or Mataas na Bundok.

Before visiting Luzon Datum, please proceed to the barangay hall first in courtesy of the local officials and to inform them of your visit. Then, you can follow a road and another trail to reach the site.

Luzon Datum is one of the emerging tourist spots in Marinduque.

• Location/Jump-off: Brgy Hinanggayon, Mogpog
• Tricycle Fare: Php 150 from the barangay hall

16. Marinduque National Museum

To learn more about the rich culture and history of the province, check out Marinduque National Museum. Here, you’ll find mostly photos depicting the culture of the local people. There are also retrieved items from sunken ships dating back during the wars.

The building where the museum lies is considered historical having been built in 1887. It is now one of the most frequented tourist spots in Boac, Marinduque.

• Entrance Fee: Php 20 for adults, Php 10 for children
• Operating Time: 8 AM to 5 PM (Monday to Friday)
