Frutigen is a municipality in the Bernese Oberland region of the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is located in the Kandertal valley, at the confluence of the Kander and Engstlige rivers and surrounded by the stunning Bernese Alps. The village is known for its traditional Swiss architecture, with many chalet-style buildings and a charming town center.

The area around Frutigen has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence of settlements from the Bronze and Iron Ages. In the Middle Ages, Frutigen was part of the Barony of the Strättligen, which was ruled by the Freiherr von Strättligen. The village developed as an important center of trade and commerce, with a thriving market and guild system. During the 19th century, Frutigen became an important center of the Swiss tourism industry, with many visitors drawn to the area for its stunning natural scenery.

Frutigen is located at an altitude of 800 meters (2,625 feet) above sea level and covers an area of 88.4 square kilometers (34.1 square miles). It is surrounded by the Bernese Alps, including the famous peaks of the Blüemlisalp and the Wildstrubel. The Kander and Engstlige rivers meet in Frutigen and the village is situated at the entrance to the Kandertal valley.

Frutigen has a population of approximately 7,000 people, with a mix of Swiss-German and Swiss-French speakers. The village has a high standard of living and is known for its excellent schools and community services.

The circuit trail “Promenade Ferroviaire” is the ideal starting point to explore the area. Alternatively, visitors can also pedal through the countryside. After all, Frutigen is a real paradise for cyclists. Another highlight of the region is the Hostalde suspension bridge. With a length of 153 m, it is one of the longest bridges of its kind in Europe.

Swimming in summer, tobogganing in winter

The Elsigen-Metsch ski resort is one of the highlights in the area. In summer, the green landscape with its hiking trails and the two scenic mountain lakes attracts visitors. Once winter arrives a blanket of snow covers the ground, and it is the start of the ski season. The toboggan run, which stretches over 3.5 km (2.17 miles), is as popular as the “Weisse Perle” ski route – a slope which guarantees an enjoyable and relaxing descent. Two snow parks offer children a place to romp and play while the professionals perform their stunts on the snowboard.

Description of the holiday rental

4-room apartment (60m2) on the mezzanine floor in a two-family house. 4 beds, 1 additional bed possible (in the living room), 2 bedrooms (2x double bed), bath / WC. Living room with radio and TV. Kitchen with oven, fridge, fondue and raclette dishes, coffee filter machine. Kitchen, bath and bed linen available. No smoking, no pets allowed. The rooms, the kitchen and the bathroom are simple and modern. The apartment is located directly on the trail and is a perfect Ausgnagspunkt for walks in the spring to fall. In winter the ski resorts Adelboden, Kandersteg, Elsigen can be reached within a few minutes by car. In Frutigen there is an indoor and outdoor pool and other recreational opportunities for young and old. The evening can be spent on your own terrace. We look forward to your visit to Chalet Flädermuus!
