Emma Woods State Beach ?: Mike Laan
VENTURA REGION
STATE BEACHES IN VENTURA
Ventura is surf and beach town with miles of sea-whisper beaches. Surfer’s Point Beach is a great place to see some of the best waves and surfers in Southern California. Next door is San Buenaventura State Beach Park with beach access, sprawling picnic areas, lifeguards and ice-fresh oysters and clams served under sunshine beside the beach. Just south of that is Marina Park , a pet-friendly spot with large grassy area bordering the beach. This beach park is nearby the dock at Ventura Harbor where you can launch kayaks or paddle boards into the calm waters. The southernmost is Harbor Cove Beach , also known as Mother’s Beach. This family favorite beach is across the street from the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center where you can enjoy free exhibits.
POINT MUGU STATE PARK and MUGU BEACH
Situated only nine miles from Camarillo , Point Mugu State Park and Mugu Beach features over 60 miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of sand dunes, river canyons and rocky bluffs. This scenic spot is ideal for camping, hiking, or spending time at the beach.
LOS PADRES NATIONAL FOREST
It’s well worth the experience to see the natural wonders of Southern California’s last pristine agricultural valley, Heritage Valley with its working ranches, farms, apiaries, fruit stands, and wineries. Explore the Sespe wilderness and Los Padres National Forest while you’re here.
CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK
The five islands of Channel Islands National Park have been called the “Galápagos of North America”, and that’s shorting them. Remote camping, hiking, sea kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, birdwatching, they are a wide-sky dream. Note too, they are one of America’s least visited National Parks. Two of the islands are only a 60- and 90-minute boat ride from Ventura Harbor and Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor . TIP : Get the Channel Island National Park app before you go. Enrich your visit with the official, free app from the National park Service (NPS). Digitally explore the park – by map or by topic of interest. Get information about visitor centers, events, services, and self-guided tours and trails throughout the park. The app is free on the on the App Store and on Google Play .
STATE BEACHES IN OXNARD
Oxnard is the proud home of four State beaches. The northernmost is McGrath State Beach – just to the south is Mandalay State Beach at the end of Fifth Street, where stretches of untouched sand dunes mimic a far off desertscape. A little farther south is 62-acre Oxnard State Beach – a favorite for its accessibility, picnic spots, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. It is also the backyard to luxury hotel property Embassy Suites by Hilton Mandalay Beach Hotel & Resort. Silver Strand State Beach is a favorite of locals, beginning in the north at the inlet to Channel Islands Harbor.
Adventure Company of Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA REGION
CHANNEL ISLANDS NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY
The Santa Barbara Adventure Company offers an exciting way to interact with the wildlife of the region up close. The popular sea cave kayaking tours allow guests to float through kelp forests in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
CHUMASH PAINTED CAVE STATE HISTORIC PARK
The walls of this small cave carved from towering sandstone boulders contain some of the finest remaining rock art created by Chumash Native Americans. A steep path leads to the cave entrance, which is protected by heavy iron grillwork.
EL CAPITAN STATE BEACH
El Capitán State Beach offers visitors a sandy beach, rocky tidepools, and stands of sycamore and oaks along El Capitán Creek. A stairway provides access from the bluffs to the beach area. Beach wheelchairs are available for use by the public at no cost. Contact a ranger or lifeguard for additional information.
REFUGIO STATE BEACH
Refugio State Beach offers excellent coastal fishing as well as trails and picnic sites. Palm trees planted near Refugio Creek give a distinctive look to the beach and camping area. Lifeguards patrol the beach year around while lifeguard towers are only staffed roughly from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Visit Morro Bay
SAN LUIS OBISPO REGION
LOS OSOS OAKS STATE NATURAL RESERVE
This Reserve features ancient sand dunes covered with centuries-old coast live oak trees. According to botanists, five major plant communities thrive within the reserve. The oak communities exist close to each other, but each has its own character.
OCEANO DUNES AND OSO FLACO LAKE
Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area offers visitors recreational activities such as swimming, surfing, surf fishing, camping and hiking. While historically the dunes have been accessible to vehicles, there are limitations and may possibly be phased out.
HEARST SAN SIMEON STATE PARK
Hearst San Simeon State Park is one of the oldest units of the California State Park System. The coastal bluffs and promontories of the scenic park offer unobstructed views of the ocean and rocky shore. A unique opportunity to view northern elephant seals is available at the Elephant Seal Boardwalk. This vantage point provides an ideal location to view these marine mammals from a safe distance. Located around Point Piedras Blancas, the elephant seal rookery extends along 6 miles of the shoreline. Elephant seals may be seen throughout the year. The largest populations and the most activity are during the months of late January, April and October.
The viewing areas are open to the public year-round and are wheelchair accessible. Docents are on site to answer questions.
MORRO BAY STATE PARK AND NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
Morro Bay State Park features lagoon and natural bay habitat. The bay’s most prominent landmark is Morro Rock. The park has opportunities for sailing, fishing, hiking, and bird watching. The park museum has exhibits that cover natural features and cultural history, Native American life, geology, and oceanography. The park also has a colorful marina and an 18-hole public golf course. On the bay’s northeast edge is a pristine saltwater marsh that supports a thriving bird population.
PISMO STATE BEACH
Visitors at Pismo State Beach enjoy many outdoor activities, including camping, surfing, swimming, fishing and bird watching. Stop by the Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center to learn about free educational programs and don’t miss the special opportunity to observe Western Monarch Butterflies in the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove (November-February).
MONTANA DE ORO STATE PARK
This park’s name, “Mountain of Gold” comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring. This park features rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, canyons, and hills, including 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. Enjoy the solitude and freedom found along the park’s trails. The best-known beach is Spooner’s Cove, across from the campground.
Carmel River State Beach
MONTEREY BAY REGION
Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary has 276 miles of coastline to access for a variety of recreational activities such as kayaking, SCUBA diving, sailing, surfing, and more.
PINNACLES NATIONAL PARK
Just an hour’s drive from Gilroy, Pinnacles National Park is a wonderland of massive monoliths, rock spires, sheer-walled canyons, and fascinating talus caves. The park is also home to California condors, 14 species of bats, and a gorgeous display of wildflowers in the spring.
HENRY W. COE STATE PARK
Looking for some space to spread out and enjoy nature? Henry W. Coe State Park offers over 87,000 acres of wild open spaces for backpackers, campers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders to explore. The terrain of the park is rugged, varied, and beautiful – with lofty ridges and steep canyons.
JULIA PFEIFFER BURNS STATE PARK
Named after a cattle ranch owner in the Big Sur area, its major attraction is McWay Falls – an incredibly scenic waterfall dropping 80 feet off a cliff onto the beach nestled in a pretty little cove.
NATURAL BRIDGES STATE BEACH AND MONARCH GROVE
Famous for its natural bridge, this beach is an excellent place for viewing shore birds, migrating whales, and seals and otters playing offshore. The park’s Monarch Grove provides a temporary home for up to 100,000 monarchs each winter. The Monarch Grove has been declared a Natural Preserve. This is the only State Monarch Preserve in California.
POINT LOBOS STATE NATURAL RESERVE
Deriving its name from the offshore rocks at Punta de los Lobos Marinos, Point of the Sea Wolves, where the sound of the sea lions carries inland, the Reserve has often been called “the crown of the State Park System.” Hiking trails follow the shoreline and lead to hidden coves. The area used to be the home of a turn-of-the-century whaling and abalone industry. A small cabin still remains at Whalers Cove and is now a cultural history museum.
AND MORE IN MONTEREY COUNTY
Monterey County provides a variety of options for hiking, biking, rock climbing, stargazing and reconnecting with nature. Explore less-populated trails off of iconic Highway 1 including Limekiln State Park , Andrew Molera State Park , Palo Corona Regional Park , and historic Fort Ord National Monument bordering Marina, Seaside, and Salinas.

Family Friends Group
I’d been told about this gem a while ago, and finally got to stay here. Such a lovely place, right on the beach, and only 1.5 hours from Sydney! We were 5 families with kids (aged 4 – 11), staying in Blue Lagoon’s well appointed cabins. Everyone had a ball! The rock pools are great to explore, a bit of surfing, kids playground, pool, nearby cafes and exceptionally lovely staff. We are already planning our next trip.

"Love this spot"
This a favourite of ours. Beautiful location, right on the beach and away from the bustle of the central coast. Well positioned sites with easy access some with artificial grass or slabs. The amenities are good and the laundry facilities are free. Very friendly staff. We saw whales and dolphins, the beach view is lovely.

Fabulous value and quiet..
I come from Perth and rented a one bedroom chalet overlooking the monster Tuggerah Lakes to visit my mother in a nursing home close by and after trying all the hotels in the area that were noisy and or run down. This chalet was wonderful, full kitchen, foxtel, reverse cycle air con, and best of all……a great bed. The staff at reception are very obliging and i have no hesitation recommending this accommodation to people wanting a pleasant stopover that has the lot.
Great place to stop and relax
I Travel a lot in caravan parks escaping winter. I found this park is well set out and very clean. The location is perfect, quite, near shops, clubs and is right on the lakes edge. It has a walking trail along the edge of the lake. The staff are very helpful and welcoming. I booked for a week and changed the booking to a month. Very happy to find this park. It is also dog friendly.
Great place! Great Staff
I am the organiser of a Christmas function for a recreational 4WD Club. We had 130 members that attended from Friday through to Sunday. As an organiser, Cherie, Amanda & Ryan were amazing! Helpful, friendly, accommodating & such nice people! I was in contact with them each week in the lead up to the event and almost constantly throughout the weekend and they were awesome! As a venue – lovely! Beautiful outlook, lovely & clean amenities, great camp kitchen. Overall an amazing place!

"Perfect Location"
Perfect location, friendliest staff, keeping caravan culture alive. We were visiting family and had to stay close to where they lived. The Resort was excellent in all ways – location, price, staff attentiveness and friendliness, Our cabin was one of the twin ones and was beautifully presented and had the right amenities for a 5 night stay, a short walk to the beach and some fantastic scenery was outstanding and a 10 minute walk to the general store, coffee shops, pizzeria and fish and chippery was very handy. There were families staying and all were friendly too. It also was a blast from the past to see all the permanent weekender caravans on site, brought back childhood memories of holidays away.

"Good Quick Getaway"
Had a 4 night getaway. Was very quiet and relaxed park, esp given school holidays. Cabin literally 2 mins walk to patrolled beach which was fantastic . Had ocean views from verandah. Pleasant cabin, recently renovated and did the job. Good layout of cabin adult downstairs and kids upstairs. Was handy to shops etc. As a bonus was a basketball ring so sons happy and occupied when not surfing. Bought all my own sheets/towels etc but very pleasantly surprised that all provided.

"Wonderful Time"
We had a wonderful time camping the weekend away. We didn’t have to go out as much. The kids enjoyed the waterpark and pool inside the holiday park. Definitely going back again. Hopefully for a longer stay. The powered camping site was clean, convenient and shaded with a beautiful tree. The shared kitchen was comfortable and handy. Plenty of DVDs for the kids to watch. The toilets and showers were very clean at all times. Love how they have a separate mirror and table stand for the ladies makeup area in their bathrooms.

Weekend away.
We chose the park for our annual weekend away with a large group of friends. All in all a pretty good weekend apart from the rain. We booked the cabins with two couples in each cabin. Pretty good accommodation and facilities. The cabins are a minutes walk to the beach and have large balconies for those evenings BBQ’s.
We’ve stayed again at Toowoon Bay Holiday Park. We have a caravan and a dog and we are well accomodated as usual. The amenities are spotless, the grounds tidy and they even found us a quiet corner in the busy Christmas period. It’s also beside the dog friendly Shelley Beach.
In awe of swimming in Toowoon Bay.
We stayed for 3 nights mid week in February in a relatively quiet time. The staff were courteous and helpful. The park facilities especially the pool and surrounding area were well presented and a joy to use. The cabin layout was unusual but still great. The highlight was being able to walk down to Toowoon Bay itself at 7.30am for a swim in the sheltered waters then a coffee at the surf club before wandering back to the cabin for breakfast.

The central coast of California has always had a special place in my heart. It’s the lesser known part of my home state and one of our favorite vacation destinations. The temperatures are typically cooler than southern California, making the beaches less inviting for sunbathing but lovely for long, romantic walks. And it’s here we’ve seen more marine life than anywhere else in the state, including whales, sea otters, and elephant seals.
I’ve read different definitions of what comprises the central coast, but many people agree it starts at the northern tip of Big Sur near Carmel Highlands and ends at the southern tip of Santa Barbara County. This is the area that I’ve focused on. There are dozens of beautiful beaches along this coast, but here are just a few of my favorites, beginning in the north and proceeding south.
1. Pfeiffer Beach
Each time I visit Big Sur, I regret that I didn’t schedule more time here. It’s a 90-mile stretch of Highway One that just might be the most beautiful road trip in the world. (I admit I’m biased.) Among the many spots I recommend visiting in Big Sur is Pfeiffer Beach.
Getting to Pfeiffer Beach isn’t easy. From Highway One, look for Sycamore Canyon Road. It’s a long, winding, and mostly unpaved road that will take you to the parking lot (larger vehicles like RV’s are not recommended). If you’re visiting in the summer or on a weekend, the small parking lot fills up fast, so try to arrive early.
When you finally arrive, you’ll be rewarded with the sight of waves splashing through Keyhole Arch. A portion of the beach appears to be a dark and subtle purple thanks to minerals in the sand. And in the spring, you may see wildflowers in bloom bordering the sand.
2. William R. Hearst Memorial Beach
Named for the infamous newspaper publisher, William Randolph Hearst, this small beach is located across the street from his massive mansion that is now a popular tourist sight. You’ll find a wide range of activities including swimming, kayaking, boating, and fishing. You’re even permitted to have your dog on the beach as long as they remain leashed. There’s ample parking and a few dozen picnic tables. Nearby is the Coastal Discovery Center which provides educational exhibits about San Simeon Cove, local wildlife, whaling history, marine mammals, and more.
If you’re visiting mid-January through mid-March, head a few miles north to Elephant Seal Vista Point to see these massive creatures return to their breeding grounds. Male elephant seals can weigh as much as 5,000 pounds, so they are quite a sight to behold.
3. Moonstone Beach
Cambria is a tiny hamlet located about 30 minutes south of San Simeon. One of Cambria’s best known attractions is Moonstone Beach, named for the smooth stones found here that appear to sparkle when the light is right.
While you can visit Moonstone Beach anytime of day, you don’t want to miss it at sunset. Take a stroll along the mile-long boardwalk and watch the Sun dip into the Pacific Ocean. You will not have the beach to yourself, instead, you’ll enjoy the company of couples, families, and dogs, all coming together to enjoy a lovely time outdoors. Afterwards, head into town for wine tasting or dinner and make it the perfect romantic evening.
4. Morro Rock Beach
You’ve likely seen a photo of Morro Rock, even if you didn’t know what it was. This 581-foot-tall rock is actually a volcanic plug and for centuries served as a navigational aid for sailors. It’s also the focal point of Morro Rock Beach. No one is permitted to climb on the rock, but with 6 miles of sandy coastline, there are plenty of other things to do including beachcombing, walking, surfing, and birding. Keep your eyes open for marine life including seals, sea otters, and starfish.
If you enjoy photography, consider getting up before the Sun and head to the beach to shoot Morro Rock at sunrise. You’ll likely have the beach to yourself as the Sun paints the sky a range of colors.
When you get hungry — or just need a break from the beach — head to the small town of Morro Bay, where you’ll find plenty of coffee shops, seafood restaurants, and boutiques selling souvenirs.
5. Avila Beach
Avila beach.
Most Californians have never heard of Avila Beach, so I definitely consider this spot a hidden gem on the central coast. It’s a charming spot with everything a family would need for a summer vacation: a stretch of sandy beach, a boardwalk lined with ice cream vendors and souvenir shops, and a large and colorful playground.
Since Avila Beach is located in a protected bay, it’s also a good spot to watch for gray and humpback whales during their annual migrations. And if you want to learn more about local marine life, head to the Central Coast Aquarium, just steps off the sand.
6. Pismo Beach
Pismo beach.
My first overnight stay in central California was in Pismo Beach, just a few feet away from the pier, so I have fond memories of it. In the morning when the tide was out, we walked for hours along the sand.
The city of Pismo Beach has recently developed the pier and surrounding promenade, making it an even better destination. There’s the Whale Surfing Playground that any kid will love. And Sheldon’s Bait Shack sells everything you might need for fishing.
If you’ve always dreamed of driving your car on the sand, then head to nearby Pismo State Beach or Oceano Dunes Recreation Areas. This is the only place in the state that permits vehicles on the sand.
7. Leadbetter Beach
Santa barbara.
Santa Barbara might just be the best known city along California’s central coast, so it gets pretty busy. But that’s one of the reasons I appreciate Leadbetter Beach. Located a bit north of the more touristy area surrounding Stearns Wharf, this beach is quieter. Depending on the time of day you’re visiting, you may see surfers, kayakers, paddle boarders, and even kitesurfers. Or you may see nothing other than the gentle waves of the Pacific Ocean.
When you get hungry, head to Shoreline Beach Cafe where you can enjoy a delicious meal while relaxing on the sand (though they offer indoor dining as well). My husband and I highly recommend their ceviche.
8. Mandalay State Beach
It’s unlikely you’ve heard of Oxnard if you’re not from California. But this lesser known city offers 6 miles of white sand beaches often adjacent to acres of strawberry fields; if you’re visiting in the summer, I definitely recommend buying some strawberries at one of the roadside stands. Mandalay State Beach is a family-friendly destination featuring walking paths, volleyball courts, a playground, sand dunes, and spectacular views of Channel Islands National Park in the distance.
Long-distance cyclists will appreciate the fact that Mandalay State Beach is along the Pacific Coast Route — an 1,800-mile bicycle journey beginning in Vancouver, Canada, and concluding in Imperial Beach, California. This is the perfect spot to rest during a long day of cycling.
