Things to do in Cebu (during a layover)

Cebu layover why not.

Layovers can be unexpected, sometimes, it adds to your projected expenses. But one thing I love about flight layovers is that it makes you explore more of a place while waiting for your next flight (talk about time cringe!) That’s what I usually do whenever I have trips in Visayas and Mindanao and I intentionally get to have a layover in Cebu . And since there are now direct flights to and from Baguio and Cebu , there is more reason to visit the Queen City of the South ! Let’s go!

Revisiting the 5th province on my #Project82 Provinces, I have always wanted to return to Cebu and re-experience everything again. It is like going back and living the past! It completes my nostalgic feels about this province. Read on and know my personal faves on what to do and places to see in the Queen City of the South and Philippines’ Lechon Capital during a layover.

On the other side of the wing

Ever experienced booking a flight hassle-free then all of a sudden your flight schedule changes? Long and cumbersome layovers usually gets you stuck in an airport with nowhere to go. On the flip side, you can also intentionally book a connecting flight from your place of origin, to the place of your layover, until you reach your final destination. It is another kind of adventure you would want to try! It is always a nice thing for me to have a layover in Cebu not just because of their world-class airport hub, but also because there is so much to see and do in Cebu, sans the traffic!

Exploring Cebu (during a layover)

A half day of waiting for that (delayed) flight would be tiresome and more expensive as food and services at the airport are almost at a premium. So much so when you intentionally book a layover, you get to visit places nearby and learn more about the place. We decided to maximize our time and explore Cebu first before heading to our final destination ! Here are some of the places we went during our Cebu Layover .

What to visit and what to do in Cebu!

Cebu is rich not only in history but also in tourist spots that are surely not to be missed. For this edition of a layover, I have jotted down some of the nearby spots where you can experience the province (almost) in its entirety.

Lapu-Lapu (Mactan) Shrine and Magellan’s Marker (Punta Engaño, Lapu Lapu City)

One of the more popular tourist spots near the Mactan- Cebu International Airport  is the Mactan Shrine in Punta Engaño. This is known as the place where Lapu-Lapu defeated the Spanish conquistadores led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. To get here, you can ride a tricycle, cab, or jeep. Travel time from the airport is around 15-20 minutes. There is no entrance fee! This is also where the staging of the annual Kadaugan sa Mactan Festival happens.

10,000 Roses Café (Cordova)

Maybe you have heard of this 10,000 Rose Café in Cordova, a municipality in southern Mactan Island, and yes, you’re right, 10,000 artificial roses installed right in front of the café giving it its surreal ambiance. The café is open from 1100 H to 2300 H and you just have to pay Ph₱ 20 (US$ 0.39) for the entrance fee before entering the premises.

10000 Roses Cafe | Cebu Turista Boy

The café serves mostly European dishes – from pasta to coffee, name it, they probably have it. I tell you that the best time to go to this famous, new-to-the-eye attraction is from 1800 H onwards, it is where the magic really happens. The roses light up the crisp night sky and will definitely bring you to a whole new dimension. 10000 Roses Café  can be reached in about 30 minutes from the Lapu-Lapu Shrine.

Lantaw Floating Restaurant (Cordova)

Just near the 10,000 Roses Café is the Lantaw Floating Restaurant . If you opt to have home-grown food, this is the place to be! With a view of the Cebu Strait and the Cebu City skyline, Lantaw Floating Restaurant also offers a cool ambiance that we loved.

Lantaw Restaurant | Cebu Turista Boy

I personally enjoyed their Cordova Cooler Drink wherein it tastes like a colada but infused with several citrus fruits like orange, calamansi, lemon, and watermelon as well. They serve mostly Filipino and Chinese cuisine and we have tried their Chopsuey (vegetarian mode on!) and their Crispy Garlic Shrimp.

Temple of Leah (Cebu City)

Basked within a lush vegetation in a higher part of Cebu City, the Temple of Leah  is dedicated to Leah Villa Abino-Adarna honoring her and offering the temple to all her beauty. It is like the Taj Mahal of the Philippines wherein the façade and its interiors are that of an ancient Roman temple.

Temple of Leah | Cebu Turista Boy

When we went to Temple of Leah , we had a hard time going up the hill (as we were only hitching on a motorbike). With its steep terrain going up, what you will see upon reaching the Temple is a 180-degree view of downtown Cebu and nearby Mactan Island. I personally have set high expectations on this place but to my surprise, the Temple is not yet done and ongoing construction works are still on its way to completion (but at least the main façade and balcony are ‘instagram-worthy.’) You will just have to pay Ph₱ 100 (US$ 2) entrance fee and you can enjoy the ‘ temple’ daily from 0800 – 0000 H.

Tops Lookout (Lahug, Cebu City)

Tops Lookout | Cebu Turista Boy

Just another must-see tourist attraction in Cebu, Tops Lookout is just a few meters farther than the Temple of Leah. One of the best kept secrets in Lahug. Located in Busay Hills, just like in Temple of Leah, Tops Lookout offers a much wider panoramic view of Cebu City and Mactan and Olango Islands. Tops can be reached approximately in 10-15 minutes from Temple of Leah via a habal-habal which usually costs Ph₱ 100 one way (US$ 2), or 20-30 minutes away from JY Square (in downtown Cebu City, approx. 10 km) via a jeepney but it would sure take time when riding such. There is an entrance fee of Ph₱ 100 (US$ 2) upon entering the premises. I also advise that you bring extra money for refreshments/souvenirs. Tops is open from 1000 – 2300 H. I am an avid fan of panoramic views and I can say that Tops Lookout is one of the best places in Cebu where you can see the metro below. The place is also filled with several food stalls in the area while you enjoy the view from above. Tops Lookout is temporarily closed as of this writing (but will reopen sometime in December 2022)

Cebu Taoist Temple (Cebu City)

Built by the prominent Chinese community in Cebu, the Cebu Taoist Temple is always on every traveler’s travel bucket list. Sitting atop the famed Beverly Hills of Cebu, this attraction will bring you at peace to a whole new level. The temple remains free of charge as of this writing and it is open from 0900- 1700 H. To get to there, alight a jeep going to Lahug, as the driver to drop you off the Taoist temple. From the drop off, you can hire a habal-habal for Ph₱ 10 (US$ 0.20, depends) and they will drop you off the gate going to the temple. They aren’t allowed to go inside the exclusive village as it is noisy. You can also reach the place via a private car or a taxi at approximately Ph₱ 300-400 (US$ 6-8) and the driver will wait for you until you finish the tour inside.

Magellan’s Cross / Basilica Minore del Santo Niño / Cebu City Hall (Cebu City)

Probably the most visited site in Cebu, the Magellan’s Cross symbolizes the establishment of the Catholic faith in the Philippines. Claimed to be planted in the very site where it is now, the original cross is enclosed in Tindalo wood for it to be preserved. Rumor has it that the original cross (before it was enclosed in wood) has supernatural powers that heals the sick on the olden times – that is why the site is so much venerated by Catholics. The site is just near the Basilica Minore del San Niño and the Cebu City Hall . It is easily accessible via various public transportation (or your private car) and is open daily from 0800 – 1800 H.

Magellan's Cross | Cebu Turista Boy

Founded in 1565, the Basilica Menor del Santo Niño de Cebu , aka Sto. Niño Church , is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines and is believed to be the spot where the image of the Santo Niño (Child Jesus) was first found during the expedition of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. This church is also assigned by the Holy See as the “ Mother and Head of all Churches in the Philippines .” Adjacent to the Church is the renowned Magellan’s Cross .

Fort San Pedro (Cebu City)

Fort San Pedro is considered to be the smallest and oldest fort in the Philippines. Now situated within Cebu’s Plaza Independencia , Fort San Pedro, a.k.a. Fuerza de San Pedro , also served as the first seat of the Spanish settlement in the country spearheaded by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. This triangular-shaped fortress is one of Cebu’s many symbols depicting the province’s rich history. The fort today has 14 cannons all around with three bastions and turrets that serves as its watchtower. It also has several plants that ornament and complement the fort itself. There is a minimal entrance fee of Ph₱ 30 (US$ 0.60, regular rate); Students and Senior Citizens get discounts upon presentation of a valid ID. It is open daily from 0800 – 2000 H.

Fort San Pedro | Cebu Turista Boy

Taboan Public Market (Cebu City)

Cebu, known for its diverse dried fish and other souvenir food items, is also known for its danggit or dried fish. Taboan Public Market is one of the more popular sites where you can buy such. Here, you will find a wide array of dried fish, small and big! Interestingly enough, too, are its pyramidal presentations when they sell their products. Price ranges vary based on the kind of fish. The market usually opens from 0400 – 2000 H daily. The Taboan Public Market is one of the more popular sites in Cebu . I have been here several times and every time I visit the place, there is always something new about it. The market also showcases several local delicacies that are way cheaper than other souvenir shops found in Cebu. It can get crowded at times but I say it is part of the experience!

Sirao Pictorial Garden 1

Sirao Pictorial Garden Little Amsterdam Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

Cebu is one of the major tourist hubs in the Visayas. With this, there are a lot of tourist spots in and around Metro Cebu that you can visit. One of them is Sirao Pictorial Garden . This flower garden showcases the natural landscape of Cebu and it is best viewed from their “ Giant Hands .” These hands offer a panoramic view of the mountainside and also give a 180-degree sight of Sirao Garden. They are open daily from 0700 – 1900 H and the entrance fee is only Ph ₱ 70.

Sirao Garden 2 – Little Amsterdam

Sirao Pictorial Garden Little Amsterdam Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

If you have been to Amsterdam, Sirao Garden’s Little Amsterdam is reminiscent of good ol’ Netherlands. The sights here are also similar to Sirao Pictorial Garden (Garden 1) and also gives a glimpse of the Cebu countryside. Lucky you if their flowers are in full bloom so you can experience the place at its fullest. The Little Amsterdam is open daily from 0700 – 1900 H and the entrance fee is only Ph ₱ 100 .

Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House

Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

The Yap-Sandiego Ancestral House is one of the oldest houses in Cebu, built sometime in the 17th century. This historical structure was once the home of Don Juan Yap and Doña Maria Florido. Taken care of over the past 10 generations, this house will give you a glimpse of the earliest Chinese settlements in Cebu and is made from delicate wood and coral stone – typical materials from way back then. It has been converted into a museum so guests and visitors will have a first-hand experience on how it was to live during the colonial period. The Yap-San Diego Ancestral House is open daily from 0800 H to 1900 H and the entrance fee is only Ph₱ 100 . I suggest that you allocate at least 1 hour to tour around the property.

Heritage of Cebu Monument

Cebu Heritage Park Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

Just a few meters away from the Yap-San Diego Ancestral House, the Heritage of Cebu Monument is a montage of the different important events that shaped Cebu as it is today. This mixed-media structure depicts events from the Spanish Colonization up to the recent canonization of San Pedro Calungsod, a Cebuano martyr. The place where the monument stands is also historial because Parian was once home to prominent families in Cebu and is also an important place to trade. ( Parian , from the word pari-pari meaning “to barter or trade.”)

Cebu Provincial Capitol

Cebu Provincial Capitol Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

This is the seat of the provincial government of the province of Cebu. The Cebu Provincial Capitol is strategically located at the heart of Cebu City, at the tip of Osmeña Boulevard, designed by Juan M. Arellano , a renowned architect who also designed the Manila Metropolitan Theater, The Legislative Building (now the National Museum of Fine Arts), and the Manila Central Post Office.

Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEx)

Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway Cebu Layover | Turista Boy

The Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEx) connects mainland Cebu to the island of Mactan, entering the municipality of Cordova. It was inaugurated last 27 April 2022, coinciding with the 501st anniversary of the Battle of Mactan . It is now the longest sea-crossing bridge in the Philippines crossing the Mactan Channel and is notable for its design that can be seen a few kilometers away. The toll fee in the CCLEX is pegged at Ph ₱ 60 – Class I (cars, jeepneys, pick-ups, vans, and motorcycles); Ph ₱ 180 – Class I beyond 7 feet in height; Ph ₱ 180 – Class II (trucks, tourist / school / public utility buses); and Ph ₱ 270 – Class III (heavy and multi-axle trucks and trailers) .

Sample Cebu Layover Itinerary and Expenses

Layovers aren’t bad after all.

As it is my second time in Cebu and is my first layover experience, it just feels fulfilling realizing that there is so much to be done whenever you are laid over to a different place before reaching your main destination. Note, too, that the time and schedule depends on how many hours your layover is . It is just a matter of time management (and budget management, too!) and how eager you are in discovering different sights.

Layovers are indeed a travlers’ nightmare. But however they can turn out to be a blessing in disguise too. I would actually love to be stuck with a layover in a place like Cebu. There is so much to see and experience, I am sute it would be a very fruitful experience. I am really impressed by the magnificence of the Lapu Lapu monument and the exquisite temple.

' src=

So, if this isn’t you first time in Cebu, would you cross it on your list of 81? Also where can we find the page if you have been updating the list publicly?

The Temple of Leah had me so intrigued. I never knew that Cebu is actually also the balwarte of the Adarnas. Hahaha!

' src=

Goodness I can’t believe how much there is you can manage to fit in in a layover in Cebu. I’ve never been but these are all great ideas to add to either a layover or a normal visit! The floating Restaurant and the Taoist Temple would be top of my list 😀

' src=

I can’t believe you have managed to see so many places in such a short time and you have spent only 9$ for the entire day. This is really impressive! I would love to visit the Taoist Temple, it looks so colorful and the architecture is very special as well.

' src=

You covered great details during the layover itself. Although Cebu looks so beautiful, I would prefer to stay here for longer and explore the place at a slower pace. Lovely itinerary though.

' src=

That’s a rather economical way to spend a layover! Out of all the places you’ve mentioned I would love to hang out in 1000 roses cafe for the ambience it offers. Thanks for a wonderful post.

' src=

Thanks. I am really looking for this while waiting for my flight at 7pm. At least, I wont feel bored anymore.

' src=

Yup! Medyo na-disappoint lang po kami noon kasi na-delay po lipad namin. But the experience po is very exciting! 🙂

' src=

Hello! Can’t believe you did that many things in just one day! One question, how much money did you spend on going from one place to the other? Thank you!

As far as I remember, I have spent less than a thousand for that layover trip! We just rented a habal-habal (motorcycle ride) to bring us to places! 🙂

' src=

where can I find the habal-habal? is it close to the airport?

I-PM mo ako sa Facebook mami! Bigay ko the numbers of my contacts na habal-habal! 🙂

booking a flight and seriously considering one with a Cebu lay-over. Thanks! Chikiluvs! always a good read!

Thank you bunchies, mami! Update ko pa ‘to with pictures!

Attractions, Places to Visit and See Near Mactan Airport

Looking for pla

ces or tourist spots to go to that is near Mactan airport? This post is for you. I get lots of questions of those short stay visitors in Cebu for places they can check out that is near the Cebu International and Domestic Airport.

You are probably on a connecting flight and only have a couple of hours of overlay in Mactan or you just want to check off Mactan Island attractions off your bucket list before proceeding to Cebu City or to wherever you are really headed to heheh.

Whatever the reason that you only have a few hours in the island, the good thing is you can still visit some sites and have a  quick and cheap Mactan tour.  Yep! No need to avail of tour packages, you can do it yourself. Go for diy travels 😎

If you are not headed to the big resorts of Mactan then I suggests you check out the following:

1. Lapu – Lapu Monument in Mactan Shrine , Punta Engano.

2. Guitar Factories  Susings or Alegre Guitars , both in Abuno .

3. Food trip in Mactan Shrine SUTUKIL restaurants or AA BBQ  in Pusok.

4. Mactan Aquarium in Maribago ( I have not been there so I can’t really recommend it yet).

5. A visit to the Virgen de Regla Parish in Poblacion Mercado.

6. Mactan Beaches and Island Hopping in Mactan  (for those who have ample time for this activity )

You can find direction guide and info on how to go to the above places that is near Cebu – Mactan airport in their respective post, just click on any of the links above. Thanks! Hope you’ll enjoy Cebu even on a short stay!

tourist spots near mactan cebu international airport

I bet everyone is eager to have a break once in a while—a vacation that can put your mind at ease, relax your body, and the kind of vacation worth your hard work. Me too! But do you know what the downside of vacation is? Waiting.

It is awful to spend hours inside the airport waiting for your next flight . Or worse, waiting for your layover to be done. Fortunately, if you are stuck in the Cebu airport, that’s a blessing in disguise.

tourist spots near mactan cebu international airport

If you have 7-10 hrs to spare in your layover in Cebu, make it the best layover in your life by visiting these places that are minutes away from the airport.

Places to see in Cebu that are near the airport during your layover

1. 10,000 roses cafe.

Yes, you read it right. The famous 10,000 roses cafe is only 35 minutes away from the Cebu Airport, and the entrance fee is 20 pesos.

This may be a little far compared to the other places that are near the airport, but because this is my personal favorite, it goes to number 1.

tourist spots near mactan cebu international airport

The best time to visit here is at night. You will see how the artificial LED-powered roses light altogether that will make you want to visit Cebu again.

2. Lapu-Lapu Mactan Shrine

Lapu-Lapu Mactan Shrine is by far the closest tourist destination in Cebu that is near the airport—7km away. It’s a perfect day to get to know our history too.

tourist spots near mactan cebu international airport

There is no entrance fee, so it’s a perfect day for you to visit historical events too. The monument serves to remind Filipino bravery, where Lapu-Lapu fatally wounded Magellan.

3. Shangri-la Mactan Cebu

If you have extra budget, since you are already in Mactan Cebu, you might as well visit Shangri-la, the most famous and expensive hotel in the city.

But since this is a hotel, there are many options for you here to savor your layover. However, you have to make sure that you only pick the day tour and visit.

Cebu

It is also a win for you if you only want to relax. There’s a beach and spa here that you would enjoy during your quick stay.

4. Fort San Pedro Mactan

A must-see while in Mactan is the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, Fort San Pedro. A tourist place that you should never miss while you are in Cebu.

For only 30 pesos entrance fee, you will get the chance to visit this triangular bastion fort. It has two sides, one facing the sea while the other is the land, where the entrance is located.

Cebu

Once you get there, you will first notice the cannons installed on the side facing the sea and a sturdy fence placed in front. It’s like visiting two tourist spots at one.

5. Magellan’s cross

When we hear the word Cebu, the next in mind is Magellan’s Cross. What is Cebu without it, right? The good thing is that it is only 12.9 km away from Cebu. You can go there quicker if you ride a taxi.

Cebu

Magellan’s cross holds a huge part of Cebu’s history. It is where Ferdinand Magellan and his crew set foot in Cebu and was greeted by Rajah Humabon and accepted the Roman Catholic religion. The cross represents faith.

Ways To Celebrate National Heroes’ Day

6. cebu taoist temple.

If going to the Taoist temple is your main goal during your layover, make sure to allocate a minimum of 1hr of your trip because you might find it a bit far from the airport.

Once you get there, don’t be surprised that there are no benches or chairs. Instead, you may use a rectangular-shaped cushion for kneeling while praying.

Cebu

Moreover, another point to remember is throwing a coin and making a wish in their wishing well. Non-Taoism tourists do this as well, and you should do too.

7. Mountain view in Temple of Leah

After visiting the Taoism temple, and the Spanish era, if you still got time left, spent it at the temple of Leah -a roman style temple that is dedicated to Leah Villa Albino-Adarna.

Upon entering the mansion with its seven stories and 24 chambers adorned with Doric columns, you will find a museum, a library, and an art gallery highlighting the late Madam Leah’s personal influences.

Cebu

Most of the places given above are open to the public aside from 10,000 Roses, Shangri-la, and Fort San Pedro. Meaning, that the rest of it asks for no entrance fee. The only thing you need is great time management to visit these places all at once.

Before I forget, if you’re new to t own, consider hiring a habalbal as your personal service. It will save you time.

15 Best Things to Do in Mactan Island (the Philippines)

Flying into Cebu International Airport will put you down on the ground in Mactan City. While many tourists book it out of the airport and head straight to the beaches of Cebu, the ones who slow down to look around Mactan are the real winners.

There are so many hidden gems on Mactan Island in the form of beaches, water activities, marine sanctuaries and more. Mactan is a coral island which means that some of the best diving, and snorkeling can be accessed just off the shore. The waters surrounding Mactan are teeming with rich biodiversity that makes for a memorable experience. This also means that the beaches are made of soft ground coral that feels so good in-between your toes!

Better yet, these attractions tend to be less crowded and expensive due to the lack of competition on the island. While everyone is over on Cebu taking turns, Mactan Island can accommodate you in an instant.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Mactan Island :

1. Explore the Neighborhoods

Lapu Lapu

One of the best things to do on Mactan is to take a tricycle to the southern city of Lapu Lapu (about 20 minutes from the airport) and just have a walk around the modest residential neighborhoods.

When you’re on foot, you’ll have a chance to wind around small roads where you’ll find some of the best food. Many of these food stands are run out of the front of a family home where the cook has been making the same Sisig recipe for 30 years and is a true expert in flavor.

In these Lapu Lapu neighborhoods, you can also shop from the local convenient stores and contribute to the neighborhoods economy. Ask locals to point you in the direction of the shore where you’ll find nice views and some spots for swimming.

2. Ocean Dreamer Island Tours

Ocean Dreamer Island Tours

Stay on Mactan for cheaper accommodation and use the island as a jumping off point for adventures. When looking for a tour group, consider Ocean Dreamers Island Tours, which offers every tour in the book!

One of their most popular tours is the ‘Three Island Tour’ where you’ll spend the day exploring the Olango Group of Islands off the coast of Mactan.

The boat tour includes lunch with fresh mango and quite possibly, BBQ chicken; you get free beer and rum; the island fees are included in the trip; and they even provide towels!

3. Scape Skydeck

Scape Skydeck

Who doesn’t love a sky bar? Head to Scape Skydeck where you can sit in cushy chairs overlooking all of Mactan!

Scape Skydeck is perched atop one of the only tall buildings on the island so you have no obstructed views. Instead, you are looking down at all the neighborhoods as far as the eye can see and you get a clear view of sunset.

The décor is super chic, which makes this the best place to have evening cocktails, appetizers, or to treat yourself to a quality meal.

4. Go Scuba Diving

Scuba Diving in Mactan

With dense coral reefs and protected marine sanctuaries, you can expect some spectacular diving off the coast of Mactan Island. There are a dozen highlighted dive spots that offer a rich diversity in marine life and underwater topography to fit every level.

Sights like Agus offer the chance to get up close and personal with weird underwater life such as sea sponges and tiny seahorses hiding in coral.

For a heart pounding adventure, there is Coral Reef Resort that offers a massive underwater wall with a sudden 20-meter drop. It i full of amazing creatures like big groupers and sea snakes.

5. Free Diving

Freedive HQ

There is a school on Mactan that specializes specifically in Free Diving.

Freedive HQ is the best place to learn how to dive down into the ocean like a mermaid using no gear and no oxygen assistance. The professionals here teach you how to hold your breath to last for longer periods that you’ve ever thought possible.

The pairing of free diving experts and the amazing marine environment here will give you the opportunity to free dive with whale sharks, schools of colorful fish, and even Manta rays- with nothing but adrenaline to power your dive.

6. Nalusuan Island Marine Sanctuary

Nalusuan Island

There is a tiny island off the coast of Mactan called Nalusuan Island which is home to an incredible marine sanctuary and picturesque resort.

Consider staying a night or two on one of their bungalows on stilts above the turquoise water where you can fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

In the morning, run to the pier and jump off for a refreshing swim. You can then spend the day snorkeling, diving, or kayaking around this marble in the ocean where you’ll find undisturbed marine life in crystal clear waters with ideal visibility.

7. Lantaw Native Restaurant

Lantaw Native Restaurant

This restaurant can only be described as “upscale island”. You’ve got the perfect island setting with dining tables on a dock jetting out into the turquoise sea while the décor and furnishings are quite classy and chic.

At night, Lantaw Native Restaurant fills up with romantic couples and trendy locals who sit under the contemporary lighting and colorful sky enjoying native dishes with a San Miguel beer in their hand. The atmosphere just cannot be beat.

8. Play on the Water

NTJ Water Sports

If you want to kick your vacation off right, book a tour with NTJ Water Sports. They’ll help you arrange transportation straight from the airport to their seaside office where you can drop your bags and let the fun immediately begin.

NTJ Water Sports offers activities like parasailing, banana boat rides, water skiing, jet skiing, flyfish rides, and more.

They also do diving tours and island tours with snorkeling. Don’t waste a second of your holiday!

9. Hire a local Boat for Snorkeling

Snorkeling

Filipino people tend to be amazing innovators. Tell a man with a boat that you’re looking to go out on the water for a day of fishing, beer, and BBQ and he will hook you up. Tell a guy that you want to go snorkeling at a secret spot, and he’ll know where to go. Tell someone that you want to experience eating raw sea urchin straight from the ocean floor, and he’ll make it happen. Want to learn how to spear fish underwater like the locals? There’s a guy for that, too.

The benefit of going with a local is that you will get a personal experience, make a new friend, and offer a job opportunity to someone other than the big companies online.

10. Lapu Lapu Statue

Lapu Lapu Statue

Located near Magellan Bay, not too far from Mactan Airport, is the Lapu Lapu Statue.

This 20-meter tall bronze statue depicting a native hero who battled and defeated Spanish soldiers in 1521 is quite the impressive sight. The Battle of Mactan will forever be remembered via this statue which is an important symbol of perseverance and island patriotism for the people of Mactan.

Locals and tourists like to pose in front of the Lapu Lapu statue, trying to mimic the hero’s valiant stance. Afterwards, have a walk around the seaside for some fresh ocean air.

11. Go Shark Diving with Fun & Sun Dive & Travel

Fun & Sun Dive & Travel

Fun & Sun Dive & Travel will give you the opportunity to swim with real life sharks! There are no Great Whites around, so don’t freak out just yet. They will take you to spots where you can swim with White Tip Sharks and Thresher Sharks, just like you’ve seen on Shark Week.

Also, Fun & Sun Dive & Travel has something called the “Underwater Scooter” which is exactly what it sounds like. You ride it like a scooter underwater while you’re head is in a submarine-astronaut style helmet. It’s worth a try just for the funny photos.

12. Ibiza Beach Club

Ibiza Beach Club

Romantic, luxurious, and totally Instagram-worthy, the Ibiza Beach Club in Mactan is the island beach club of your posh lifestyle dreams.

This Mediterranean-style spot features a hip restaurant and bar that jets out onto the sea, totally surrounded by sparkling water. At night, tasteful neon lights shine off white chairs and canopies that make you feel like you are really in Ibiza.

There are nightly entertainment shows and a Mediterranean-inspired menu filled with tapas and wine that will put you in total vacation mode.

13. Magellan Shrine

Magellan Shrine

Near the Magellan Port is, of course, the Magellan Shrine. This shrine pays tribute to Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who lost his life during the 1521 Battle of Magellan.

Magellan inflicted torture on the island of Mactan, even burning villages to the ground in attempts to threaten the native people and entice them to surrender control. You can see depictions of Magellan’s battle painted on the shrine showing violent fights taking place in the water.

If you’re wondering why Mactan would want to remember such a man, it’s because he brought Christianity to the now uber-religious island and for that, they honor him.

14. San Vicente Marine Sanctuary

San Vicente Marine Sanctuary

Long hand-woven bamboo bridges jetting out from the jungle 1/3 of a mile into the ocean overhead acres of protected marine sanctuary- that is what you can expect and more from San Vicente Marine Sanctuary.

This marine sanctuary in Lapu Lapu is certainly worth a visit for the beautiful island landscape alone. You can also snorkel here, swim, feed the fish, and even camp overnight!

This place is a photographer’s dream with plenty of opportunities to capture nature in its most raw form.

15. Caohagan Island

Caohagan Island

From Lapu-Lapu city, you can reach Caohagan Island via boat in about 1 hour. This tiny speck in the ocean is made up of a couple dozen houses, beautiful beaches, and inland jungle. Locals are excited to share their island with tourists as this spot has only recently began to attract foreign visitors.

Caohagan Island is still a developing island which means that there is only electricity from late morning to early evening. It’s factors like this that contribute to its charm. Go fishing, snorkeling, or wandering the villages to experience that idyllic island life.

Historical Attractions

The old and the remembered: 7 top historical attractions in cebu.

Cebu may be a bustling metropolis, but its historical side should never be forgotten when you first visit and explore the city. It is, after all, home to the oldest street in the Philippines as well as the oldest church. Even with just a few hours to spare, a tour around the historical attractions is very much possible. From Mactan Cebu International Airport in Mactan Island, there are two alternatives. You can cross from Mactan Island to Cebu Island via the Marcelo Fernan Bridge. Be mindful of the time as on a regular day as some areas can be congested with traffic. On Sundays and holidays though, it is a quick 30 minute drive.

A quicker and cheaper alternative is by ferry from Muelle Osmena wharf across Virgen de la Regla Church, a 10 minute trip from the airport. The ferry plies Mactan Channel and docks at Pier 3, just 5 minutes away from these top 7 popular historical attractions of Cebu.

Things To Do In Mactan

A trip to Cebu is a definite must-do when traveling to the Philippines, whether it’s your first time, tenth time, or even when you’re living in the country. Being an island province gives Cebu some of the best beaches in the country along with its north to the south distance of 196 kilometers, and the splattering of smaller islands around its perimeter.

But if you only have a day or two to spare, traveling to Cebu is still not a complete loss with a visit to Mactan.

The Island of Mactan

Mactan, also sometimes known as Lapu-Lapu, is a large island mass that is part of Cebu Province. The island is divided into Lapu-Lapu City and the municipality of Cordova and separated from the rest of Cebu’s mainland by the Mactan Channel. The Marcelo Fernan Bridge and the Mactan-Mandaue Bridge serve as access between Mactan and the mainland.

Cebu is most accessible via plane, with all flights landing at the Mactan-Cebu International airport on Mactan Island. Ferries also dock in Mactan and Cebu City coming from other nearby provinces.

The island of Mactan plays an important part in Philippine history. This is where Ferdinand Magellan, a Spanish navigator, and soldier, first landed in the Philippines as part of the Spanish quest to conquer the Philippines. He went face-to-face with Datu Lapu-Lapu, a Muslim chief who refused to recognize Spanish reign. The Battle of Mactan between Magellan and Lapu-Lapu happened in April 1521 and was won by the local tribe despite battling with spears and poison arrows against the Spaniard’s gun powder. This historic event is enshrined as one of the island’s top attractions.

Fifteen minutes away from the airport is the spot where the Battle of Mactan took place and where Magellan was slain. Magellan’s Shrine is a park found in a town called Punta Engano, and is along the way to the row of luxury resorts on the Cordova side of Mactan Island. Lapu-Lapu’s victory earned him the title of The First Filipino Hero and is commemorated with a larger-than-life monument in the middle of the park. A few steps away is a stone structure that allegedly marks the exact spot where Magellan has fallen. There are food and souvenir stalls around the area as well. Every April, the city commemorates the Battle of Mactan with a reenactment and murals telling the story of their great hero, Lapu-Lapu.

JPark Island Resort and Water Park

Formerly known as the Imperial Palace Water Park, JPark Island Resort and Water Park is a 5-star resort in the Lapu-Lapu City side of Mactan Island. While accommodations here can be quite steep starting at $200 per night, they have day trip rates for visitors to make use of the amenities such as the private beach, swimming pool, water sports, and of course, the water park of slides, fountains, and a small river ride. They also have several bars and restaurants within the resort, serving local and international cuisine. Because of the many activities in the resort, JPark Island Resort is a common destination for families with children.

Mactan Island is mostly rock, so most of the beaches on the island itself are man-made and can be found in private luxury resorts such as Shangri-la , Movenpick , Be , and Plantation Bay . There are still several hotels and resorts by the water that are fronted by docks that go straight into the water and reefs.

If you have a bit of time and you don’t want to spend the day at a resort, there are several smaller islands off the coast of Mactan. These sites are well-known snorkeling or dive sites, but you are more than free to just sit on the white sand beaches for a couple of hours before moving to the next island. Boat rental ranges from $60 for 5 people to $150 for 15 people, depending on how many islands you plan to visit. The most popular tour operator is Islands Banca , but there are other more affordable boat rentals in Mactan Island itself.

There are six island-hopping destinations from Mactan:

  • Pandanon Island features a white sand bar and blue-green waters. It is the farthest destination and is technically part of Bohol Province already. There is a small resort that operates on the island that rents out cottages for visitors.
  • Nalusuan Island is a fish sanctuary maintained by Nalusuan Island Resort. This place is perfect for beach bumming and other water activities run by the resort
  • Hilutungan Island is also a fish sanctuary good for snorkeling and scuba diving
  • Caohagan Island is more beach than a sanctuary, so snorkeling is not advisable here. The boat can either land on the island itself or dock a few meters off the shore where passengers can just dive straight into the blue-green waters
  • Sulpa Island is another snorkeling site in Mactan. The seascape is filled with corals with a white strip of sand in the east
  • Olango Marine Sanctuary is one of the more popular fish sanctuaries near Mactan but has taken a toll on all the visitors swimming in the area. It charges a lower fee ($1 compared to $4 in other sanctuaries), but has unfortunately seen a degradation in its coral landscape and schools of fish

Filipinos are natural foodies at heart. Days and itineraries are created around meals. Filipinos are also fond of eating smaller meals several times a day as opposed to three big meals in one day. Another Filipino habit when it comes to food is sharing – most dishes, unless indicated otherwise in the menu, are to be shared between 2 or 3 people, depending on your appetite.

Cebu is known in the Philippines as one of the best foodie destinations in the country, and Mactan is no exception:

  • If you want a little bit of everything, Mactan Al Fresco is a new dining concept at the mall-BPO area called Mactan Newtown. It’s constructed in a circular pattern where food stalls are concentrated at the center surrounded by large benches and tables. Guests can order from several stalls, made up of both original Cebuano concepts and big food chains, and pick any seat. This is good for people with little time or who simply can’t decide what to eat as most of the dishes served at Mactan Al Fresco are local to Cebu
  • Abaca restaurant at the Abaca Resort along Punta Engano road is a fancy al fresco place fronting the beach. It’s well-known for its delicious desserts and pastries, but also serves hearty savory meals as well. The decor is very nature-inspired, making a meal or just coffee at Abaca a very relaxing experience
  • Manna Sutukil is the epitome of Cebu cuisine. Sutukil or STK is short for “sugba (grilled), tuwa (soup), kilaw (ceviche)”, which describes the most popular ways of food preparation on the island. It’s a very simple restaurant with bamboo walls and plastic chairs, but this is the best place to get fresh seafood and local Cebuano delicacies
  • The Jungle Restaurant is a unique experience with its cultural shows over buffet dinners. The decor can be a little tacky, with floor-to-ceiling tribal and Filipino paintings, artifact, and decor, but the ambiance and energy are always warm and cheerful
  • The Oriental Spice Gourmet is not a local open secret. It’s situated along Maximo V. Patalinghug Jr. Avenue in Lapu-Lapu City with a gigantic sign but is mostly visited by locals and not tourists. It serves Chinese and Asian cuisine and has been around for years. The owners were originally from mainland China, and have lived in Cebu for so long that they have become fluent in the local dialect, Bisaya. Their best known for their curries, soups, and Chinese dishes
  • The quintessential Cebuano dish is the Cebu lechon – whole roast pork cooked over a fire pit and stuffed with lemongrass and other spices. There are several restaurants that offer this dish, but the most popular would be Zubuchon , thanks to its very accessible location. There are several branches in Mactan such as the Marina Mall and at the Outlets at El Pueblo Drive, but the most convenient is at the airport itself where you can have a quick meal, or buy frozen products to take home

There’s a long list of places to eat, resorts to hang out in, and things to see in Mactan. So if you’re headed to Cebu, make sure you get to experience at least one of these exciting trips.

Miscellaneous

  • You can NOT enter the terminal without a valid plane ticket.
  • If you do not arrive at least 1 hour BEFORE your flight, you may not be allowed to enter the terminal.
  • It is possible that you could be kept waiting outside a terminal for a delayed plane. Outside but under cover that is. Airport officials sometimes do not allow anyone in the terminal until 2 hours before departure.
  • Always check your reservation to determine which terminal your flight is departing from.
  • You should consider dressing as light as possible as they may make you remove any belts, shoes, hats and pass them through the x-ray machine.
  • Beware of scams and thieves.  Keep your bags and valuables close to you at all times while traveling through the airport, on the plane, and in the transport from the airport to your destination. READ MORE: How to Avoid Scams & Thieves in the Philippines
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to go to the airport.  It can take time to catch a taxi (30+ minutes). There are often long lines to get into this airport, at the check-in counters, security, and customs. Expect the worst and arrive several hours BEFORE your departure time to avoid missing your flight.
  • Always have at least 1,000 pesos handy to pay the terminal fee should you have to.  Not all airports accept credit cards or the credit card machines are often not working.

Shangri La has already established a name for itself as it is already a common knowledge for everyone that it is a 5-star hotel. So already expect a good service from its staff, which I can attest to, nice, clean and spacious rooms with a great view of sunrise and sunset as well, great food, great facilities and everything that is to be expected of a 5-star hotel to have. But what made it stand out? It is actually their beach. I have been traveling all over the Philippines for quite some time now and have not actually adored Mactan's beaches since sand is not as fine as the one's in Boracay or Bohol, but Shangri La turned this around by actually developing their beach front. Yes its sand is not as fine, but hey, I haven't been to any hotel who need not to hire a boat to go somewhere to go snorkeling. It is readily available right at your door step as Shang has taken care of the reefs. Aside from that, they have outstanding beach beds. Oh yes, none that I have seen in most resort hotels that I have been to. Words would not be enough to describe how I felt about our stay in Shangri La, So I guess, you should just see it for yourself, it is a gem in Mactan, Cebu which I highly recommend that you visit.

Getting to Cebu City proper is becoming difficult, taking 1 or more hours each way. Fortunately, you can have a very enjoyable stay at Movenpick. Even just staying in Mactan Island, you can enjoy Cebu's famous Lechon (Zubuchon, Rico's Lechon, etc.), shop for souvenirs (Islands Souvenirs), try some water sports & enjoy some hidden good eats. Giuseppe Pizzeria & Sicilian Roast is a 5-minute walk from the hotel & a MUST TRY. At Movenpick Hotel Mactan itself, try free sweets at the lobby during "Chocolate Hour" (3pm-4pm) or sample the world-famous Movenpick coffees & ice cream. This hotel provides a very enjoyable respite from the busy city life. Peaceful, secluded, with enough variety of activities to fill a weekend vacation. Enjoy!

Very new Hotel not too far from Mactan Airport with breakfast, great staffs, clean and close to everything. You are entitled to 1 trip from or going to the airport which one you choose. The only problem that fissed us off is the terrible traffic everywhere you go in Cebu.

All was just fantastic. From pick up at Mactan Cebu International Airport to the Clean, Quiet, and layout of the room and facilities. Restaurant is in the back within very short walk. Eggs your way would be cooked on the spot by the chef. Great place. Will visit again.

The hotel has very nice rooms, right next to the Mactan (Cebu)International airport with sound proof glass, and the pool was great. The best part of the hotel is the free breakfast in the morning which is fantastic, and nothing compared to your typical free breakfast in Canada. We will stay there again when we are in Cebu, and we recommend this hotel.

Goldberry Suites & Hotel

What stood out for me is the location ( which is a little less than 10 mins away from Mactan-Cebu International Airport and of course the free pick-up and drop-off shuttle services. The staffs are very accommodating and very helpful.

Cebu Dulcinea Mactan Airport Hotel

Having previously tried 2 'airport' hotels on Mactan Island, this excelled way above the others. Very friendly staff, 24 hour reception, big room and very clean. It is right on ML Quezon National Highway opposite Gaisano Mactan Mall. It has an excellent little restaurant, although I can only vouch for the breakfast as I ate out both nights I was there. Bacon & eggs cooked an demand and a small but delicious choice of local food- which I love. It's barely 10 mins from Mactan Airport and they have a very reliable shuttle which you need to book with 2 days notice. Excellent free in room Wi-Fi too. Quite by chance, and certainly no fault of the hotel, it was Kadaugan festival weekend and the roadway outside became a huge and boisterous street party. It suited me as a fun loving tourist but if you want a quiet stay then check the festival calendar before booking! I can highly recommend the Dulcinea if you want easy access to the airport and not concerned about not being in Cebu City itself, which is about a 250 peso (USD6) taxi ride away.

The Bellavista Hotel

Hotel staff are all friendly and accommodating. The room is clean and well arranged. The aircondition unit was not so cold but nevertheless it still functioned. Room rates are affordable. Breakfast served was delicious.free hotel van was on time. Very accessible to mactan international airport and gaisano country mall. Our stay at the hotel was a pleasant one 😊

I was in transit, flying in from another island with my flight out of the country the next morning from Mactan, Cebu. You get good value for the money. I was only there for a bed to sleep for a few hours. As expected, the accommodation was pretty basic with cable TV & wifi. I was put in a big room with 2 king beds good for a group. The airconditioning unit was a bit noisy since it was window type and installed right beside the door. You get what you paid for. But no regrets. I'd still comeback if I'd be in transit for another early flight next time.

I really felt at home with the staff caring for my well being and sincerely listens when I want to tell how my day was. I've got problems with my reservations and they've managed to mitigate the issue fast and easy. The place is very near to a mall, restaurants and eateries, airport and attractions. I specifically chose this hotel due to it's proximity to places I wanted to go in Mactan. I'm more than thankful for all the convenience I got. I will stay here again someday when I want to go back for Cebu Dive.

I have stayed at at least 14 resorts in Mactan Since 2007. Some of these are over 300 us per night. This is an economy hotel it’s not advertised as 5 star. I don’t understand the complaints I see in the comments section. Any person should know that at this price it’s not 5 star. However it’s one of the best bargain hotels on Mactan. I don’t understand the complaints I see in the comments section. Any person should know that at this price it’s not 5 star. However it’s one of the best bargain hotels on Mactan. Great breakfast , extremely clean, wonderful staff and owner. Safe and quiet. I stay here regularly and have been there at least 7 times. For the money it’s really the best value on the island. I am not associated in any way with the owners and am just extremely happy that I found a hotel like this on this overpriced market. All the others are just way overpriced for the normal person. If you want 3 pools, a muddy beach if they have a beach at all ,so so rooms and overpriced restaurant pay 150 to 350 us and stay somewhere else. For the 35 to 50 us this place can’t be matched in this location.

I've stayed here 3 times, and the bed was clean and no problem with using hot shower. if you are just tranfering, highly recommended. if you are looking around in cebu, it is more clever to choose a hotel in cebu.

It's a 12 minute walk to the Mactan Marina Mall, behind which there's a ferry dock within with service to Cebu City ferry terminals. Th JCAD has a passable restaurant on site and it's only a 5 minute walk on the same side of the road to the Scape Skydeck, one of the top rated bar/restaurants in Cebu City. The difficulty is in getting to the place! It's on the South side of the M.L. Quezon National Highway EXACTLY at the point where the two Southbound lanes coming off the (new) bridge merge into the MLQNH.

Basic hotel for basic needs. We needed a hotel near Mactan airport and this hotel served its purpose. We wanted a no frills hotel just for a night's sleep and this hotel is just that. It's cheap so don't expect a luxurious accommodation.

Sometimes we had water from a faucet so that we could wash ourselves with a pot.... Beside that, the hotel had problems with the electricity - even outside the hotel there has been no problems with the power, we had long periods of 'brown out'. Anyhow the staff was nice and they tried to help... At the end they charged us for a late check out with 500 pesos instead of considering all the hassle and 'late check in' wich was the hotels fault!!! Not a place where i wanna go again

Ocean Cruise Hotel

Cute and clean and innocently sweet. Looks very new, built in the shape of a cruise ship on the outside, makes a mark but not sure if everyone see that value. It is so new, still has piles of building rubbish just outside the window - this could and should be removed swiftly a while back though. Slightly pricey for what it is, but ok. I booked there to be nearer a specific meeting I had to do, not too sure if ideal location as little food choices, but I would stay again. Sometimes not easy to get a taxi but can be booked in good time ahead. GrabTaxi is not yet fully embraced in Cebu area.
