It’s almost Back to School Time! Here are Some Great Edmonton Field Trips!

By nerissa mcnaughton | september 3, 2016.

Art Gallery of Alberta Free Admission Evenings are the perfect chance to visit the gorgeous AGA! Explore the galleries on Tuesdays and Wednesday evenings

Art Gallery of Alberta

If you are looking for an exciting Edmonton field trip opportunity for your class, you’ll have no shortage of options in the Capital region. Here are just a few of the places where your students will learn something new while creating lasting memories with their peers:

The Art Gallery of Alberta:

You teach students to feed their minds, but you know the mind-body-emotional connection is important too. Engage your students’ deeper senses with the wonderful displays and programs at the Alberta Art Gallery (AGA). From indigenous art to traditional paintings, from exotic sculptures to creative installations, awaken your class’s inner artist with AGA’s educational programming .

John Janzen Nature Centre:

Providing interactive, hands-on ways for students to learn all about nature, the John Janzen Centre can accommodate groups from preschool, elementary or junior/senior high. The programs are designed to tie into established school curriculum goals, and they run rain or shine. Visit their website for complete details.

Devonian Botanic Gardens:

There is a reason why Devonian Botanic Gardens has been running field trip programs for over 25 years. Here, students can roam more than 240 acres of wetlands, butterfly gardens, Japanese gardens, and more. Don’t be alarmed if you are presented with a freshly caught frog! Take time to smell the roses as you and the kids get in touch with the beauty of the natural world. Programs are available for elementary through senior high school students.

TELUS World of Science:

Edmonton Field Trips - Telus World of Science

Telus World of Science

For an out-of-this-world experience, take your class to TELUS World of Science (TWoS), where special programs are designed for each grade to complement the Alberta Education curriculum. TWoS also has educational programming for home-schooled children . Sometimes special presentations, such as The International Exhibition of Sherlock Holmes, can reserve time blocks for student groups.

Father Lacombe Chapel:

Go back in time when you visit the quaint delight that is Father Lacombe Chapel . Located in St. Albert, just a hop, skip and a jump outside of Edmonton, school programs are arranged by grade, and each student gets to experience life as a pioneer. Set against a tranquil backdrop of green space and helmed by outstanding interpretive guides, this is a school trip that whets the appetite for learning more about history.

Education is one of the most important building blocks of a child’s life, but learning in a classroom is just one piece of the puzzle. Field trips keep students engaged in their learning experiences, and they are fun for both students and teachers alike.

13 of the Best Things to Do in Edmonton with Kids

posted by James Brockbank on March 18, 2022 // last updated on March 18, 2022

Edmonton is a beautiful city in Alberta, Canada . It’s the capital, therefore has more than enough things for you to do and explore while in the city. The city is rich in history, museums, beautiful parks, and exciting attractions.

There are several year-round activities for you and your kids to do. However, it does have a few seasonal ones that are worth looking into, depending on when you’re planning to visit. So as you plan your trip, check out 13 of the best things to do in Edmonton with kids.

Visit the West Edmonton Mall

Tour the royal alberta museum, enjoy the fresh air at elk island national park, visit the telus world of science , see the animals at the edmonton valley zoo, step back in time at fort edmonton park, tour the university of alberta botanic garden , observe the ice castles , splash around at world water park, tour the alberta aviation museum, ride the 100 street funicular , wander the old strathcona farmers’ market, spend time at lois hole centennial provincial park.

best field trips in edmonton

While you’re in Edmonton, you have to visit the West Edmonton Mall . It’s the largest shopping mall in North America and ranks as the 23rd largest mall globally. It features around 800 shops for you to browse, several restaurants, two hotels, and plenty of entertainment. It’s also the second most visited mall in Canada.

You and your kids can spend hours wandering through the hundreds of stores in the mall. It’s more like a massive entertainment center than simply a mall. You can take a break for lunch or dinner at the food court for fast meals or choose a great restaurant to dine at. They have a little bit of everything, so you won’t need to worry if you have a picky eater.

Sometimes shopping can get boring for kids, even adults. Don’t worry, though. There’s so much to do at the West Edmonton Mall, and you won’t know where to start. The bowling alley is great if you have older children. They also have a mini-golf course if you want to connect with your competitive side.

While you’re here, other things you can do include an escape room, go ice skating, ride a huge carousel, and even watch a sea lion show on Saturdays. Regardless of what you like to do, you’ll enjoy your time here.

You’ll find the Royal Alberta Museum in the middle of downtown Edmonton. The Royal Alberta Museum is a collection of human and natural history where you and your kids can learn more about Canada and, specifically, Alberta. It’s the largest museum you’ll find in Western Canada, so you can end up spending hours here if you choose.

The museum features several permanent and temporary exhibits for you to see. They have exhibits on cultural studies, life sciences, and Earth sciences. Some of the most popular cultural studies displays are on the Indigenous peoples of Canada, archeology, and Canada’s military and government history.

If you and your kids are more interested in the Earth and life sciences, there are several exhibits you’ll want to see. Some of the best include their exhibits on geology, botany, invertebrate zoology, and mammalogy.

Your kids will love the life-size skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. You’re more than welcome to walk through the museum on a self-guided tour. A specific tour that the staff offer is their people and plague tour. You’ll learn all about various epidemics and how they affect people worldwide.

Before you leave, you might want to bring your kids to the gift shop. You can find books, stuffed animals, and other souvenirs your kids will love.

best field trips in edmonton

Outside the bustling capital city is Elk Island National Park . This beautiful space offers plenty of activities that you and your kids will both enjoy. It’s only about 20 miles outside of the city, making it a great place to spend a day or several if you want to go camping.

The park is crucial conservation land for bison, elk, and other wildlife, so there’s a good chance you’ll see these magnificent animals while you’re there. The bison are mainly active from July to August. Keep in mind while they’re beautiful, they’re still wild animals, and you cannot approach them.

The park has various activities, and it’s open 12 months of the year. You can choose one of their several hiking trails, go fishing, have picnics in their grassy areas or picnic shelters, and more. During the warmer months, renting kayaks is popular. They offer tandem ones so you and your kids can paddle together.

There are beaches on the lake during the summer that are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or just relaxing. There are several playgrounds for the kids to run wild on when they need a break from other outdoor activities. Your kids will love speaking with park rangers at the visitor center and visiting the gift shop.

The Telus World of Science is a broad-based science facility perfect for people of all ages. Many schools in Edmonton visit here for field trips, or parents take them there on weekends because they love spending time here.

As a parent or guardian, you’ll love how much fun your kids are having while simultaneously learning new things. There are numerous exhibits on everything from space to nature and even displays where kids can learn about health and the human body.

Some of their most popular exhibits are the health zone where you can learn about genes, challenging the deep to learn more about the ocean, and a traditional Indigenous room where you can learn more about the Indigenous population in Canada.

For the most rambunctious and adventurous children, the science garage needs to be a stop on your tour of the building. It’s a newly expanded museum section where kids can rock climb and participate in hands-on engineering experiences.

When you need a break exploring the exhibits, you can check out what’s playing at their IMAX theater. They have several options for you and your kids to watch. Some of the choices you’ll have included the Deepsea Challenge, a movie on Ireland, Humpback Whales, and Extreme Weather.

best field trips in edmonton

If you and your kids are animal enthusiasts, the Edmonton Valley Zoo needs to be on your itinerary. This activity is one of the best things to do in Edmonton with kids for several reasons. One of them is that it’s open 364 days a year. They only close their doors on Christmas.

The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a small and intimate zoo that doesn’t take all day to get through. There are roughly 350 animals for you to see and learn about. The animals featured here are from around the globe. There’s at least one animal from all climates and habitats.

Some of the animals you can view here are Siberian tigers, lemurs, Asian elephants, bearded dragons, seals, and so much more. The staff at the zoo are dedicated to learning more about these animals, conservation, and improving veterinarian medicine.

All the Edmonton Valley Zoo animals receive enrichment activities to keep them happy and healthy. Some of the activities address sensory, physical, cognitive, social, and food enrichment. You and your kids can witness these activities with various animals, even when you’re not aware they’re happening.

The gift shop is near the entrance/exit to the park and is the perfect place to end your visit to the zoo. You can get stuffed animals of your favorite species or just browse.

best field trips in edmonton

Fort Edmonton Park is dedicated to the history and heritage of the city. When you arrive, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the early days of Edmonton. The park is Canada’s largest living history museum that showcases four areas from different points in history.

The park is over 150 acres in size and has more than enough things for you and your kids to do while in town. The park consists of four sections. The areas of the park you need to see include the fort of 1846, 1885 street, 1905 street, and 1920 street.

One of the best parts of the park is that while you can walk around, you don’t have to. Instead, visitors can see each section of the park via their fully-functional steam train. It’s the perfect way to view everything, especially since trains were a popular mode of transportation in the eras the park focuses on.

Other ways to travel through the park include horse-drawn carriages, cars, and streetcars. Depending on when you visit, you can see staff dressed from the periods they depict, handing out information and putting on performances.

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden is one of the most beautiful places in Edmonton. The gardens space for 240 acres. The university opened this botanic garden in 1959, and since then, it has been a place that tourists and visitors love spending time at.

There are dozens of trees, flowers, and other plants for you to see. The paths are wide, making it easy for several visitors to walk around without feeling like you’re crowding one another. The botanic gardens are extensive, so comfortable walking shoes are a must.

When you arrive, you can find a map of the gardens. You can also find it online to help you navigate. There are several areas of the gardens, all landscaped and decorated differently. The different garden areas include the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, the Aga Khan Garden, and the Patrick Seymour Garden.

There are other areas of the park without specific names that you’ll want to wander through. Depending on how fast you walk, you could be here for a few hours. If you think you’ll get hungry, you can bring small snacks like granola bars or purchase food and beverages from their concession stand.

Keep in mind that you cannot bring your leashed dog here all the time unless they’re a service animal. However, there are specific days on which they allow dogs. You can find that information on their website.

best field trips in edmonton

If you’re in Edmonton during the winter, you can’t leave without seeing the Ice Castles . This winter attraction is beloved by locals and visitors. Every winter, the minds behind ice castles create impressive structures from icicles and present them to the public.

The Ice Castles feature LED lights and are a magical experience for adults and kids. When you see these ice castles, you’ll be awe-struck that every portion of the structure is built by hand. They grow 12 million icicles daily to create the castles. You can see the ice castles during the day, but they’re even more magical with their colorful lights at night.

This attraction is in Hawrelak Park, near many other attractions in the city. Another reason to visit the ice castles at night is to see the live fire shows. Performers use fire spinning and other techniques to provide a unique experience.

You can bring food and drink to the park while you’re seeing the ice castles, but something people love doing is grabbing hot chocolate from the concession stand while walking through the castles.

best field trips in edmonton

One of the best things to do in Edmonton with kids is to bring them to World Waterpark . You’ll find it at the West Edmonton Mall, but you could easily spend hours at this one place alone. The water park opened its doors in 1986 and is the second-largest indoor water park in North America.

This indoor water park has everything you love about outdoor water parks. It has the largest indoor wave pool, where you can ride the waves or wade into the shallow water. There are also 17 water slides for you and your more adventurous children to try. If you want to try your hand at surfing, the FlowRider is where to do so.

If you’re traveling with toddlers and younger children, they don’t have to miss out on all the fun. They have a specific section, The Cove, designed for toddlers and younger kids. It features splash pads, water fountains, dump buckets, and other age-appropriate water fun.

The water park has hot tubs for adults and older kids to use. It’s a great way to relax while your kids play the day away. You can rent cabanas or snag some of the free lounge chairs to post up. There are also food and drink options that you may want to take advantage of.

Regardless of how you like to spend your day at water parks, you won’t regret spending a few hours or even the whole day here.

best field trips in edmonton

The Alberta Aviation Museum is an excellent museum at the former Edmonton City Center Airport. Whether you love planes or not, you’ll still find the museum fascinating and entertaining. It’s a great attraction in Edmonton since it’s open every day of the year except Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day.

You’re welcome to walk around the museum yourself, or you can choose to go on a guided tour. A tour guide will discuss the exhibits with you and be able to answer any questions you may have. In addition, you and your kids will be able to see dozens of old-school planes from different eras.

A few of the planes you can see include the Vickers Viking IV, Curtiss Stinson Special, Waco UIC, and a Fleet Model 80 Canuck. A display mimicking the pilots of each plane surrounds the aircraft, and they’re incredibly detailed and wonderful to see.

They host various events at the aviation museum, like cockpit day, where you and your kids can get up close and personal with the cockpit of a plane. This opportunity doesn’t happen frequently, and advance tickets are recommended. Even if you can’t make it for this event, the museum itself is more than enough to keep you and your kids entertained for a few hours.

As long as you or your children aren’t afraid of heights, riding the 100 Street Funicular is a great thing to do while you’re on vacation there. This attraction doesn’t take very long, so it’s great to work into your list of things to do in Edmonton with kids.

The entrance to the 100 Street Funicular is in downtown Edmonton, so it’s straightforward to get to. The funicular opened in 2017 and serves as a connection for downtown Edmonton and River Valley. You’ll slowly ride the funicular to the top while taking in the best views of the city and valley below.

The 100 Street Funicular is similar to an elevator, meaning it doesn’t require someone on board to operate it. The funicular has all-glass walls so that regardless of where you’re sitting in it, you’ll have beautiful views of the city and river. The ride up and back down doesn’t take too long, so you won’t need to carve out hours of your day for this activity.

Remember that while the attraction isn’t closed on any particular day, if the temperatures outside reach 86 degrees Fahrenheit or more, it will close for the rest of the day. They do this for the health and safety of visitors and staff.

best field trips in edmonton

The Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market is a great and free activity to do with your kids in Edmonton. You don’t need to pay a dime unless you find something you want to take home with you. The farmers’ market is open every Saturday, rain or shine.

The market takes place in a gorgeous, large, brick building in the heart of Edmonton. When you walk inside, you’ll see over 130 local vendors offering their products to shoppers. The vendors range from people selling local produce, clothing, candles, handmade goods, and so much more.

You and your kids will love seeing the different vendors and goods the market offers. You can grab fresh produce and other foods to take with you back to your lodging or on a picnic in one of the several city parks. Some vendors will let you sample their food or produce, and we highly recommend this outing as one of the top things to do in Edmonton with kids.

Everyone loves getting a souvenir from their vacation, and this is one of the best places to do that. You can find unique items while supporting local and small business owners. If you’re feeling generous, you can grab something for family and friends that are back home who couldn’t make it to Edmonton with you.

best field trips in edmonton

If you’re looking for a place to reconnect with nature but don’t want to drive to Elk Island National Park, Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is a great option. It’s northwest of the city center of Edmonton and has plenty of things for you and your kids to do.

The main attraction at this park is Big Lake. The lake is large and takes up over 50% of the park’s total area. There are plenty of walking paths along the lake’s shores and observation decks that extend into the waters. Viewing the lake from the observation decks is a great way to see the lake and take photos to remember your trip.

The hiking trails in the park are ideal if you’re looking for things to do in Edmonton with kids. They’re relatively easy as long as you bring water and have appropriate walking shoes. You’ll probably see plenty of wildlife like birds, squirrels, and other animals.

Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park is famous for bird watching. People come from all over Canada to experience the unique species that live here. If you want to go bird watching, you’ll want to bring binoculars with you so you can better spot the birds.

Keep in mind that while the park is close to the city, you’ll need a car to reach it. You can rent a car or use a rideshare service to get to the park. Either way, it’s worth heading out to the park for a few hours.

School Field Trips & Skill City

We are busy planning a new School Field Trip registration process via the Skills Portal for the 2025 Provincial Skills Canada Competition. ALL teachers wanting to bring their class on a field trip MUST register via the Skills Portal, and will need to create a username and password . If you are interested in attending the field trip on May 7 or May 8 2025 , please keep an eye on your e-mail or reference this website for updated information. Registration will open in September 2024 .

Due to EXPO building capacity numbers, registration is restricted to a certain number of spots available. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis.

The 33rd Provincial Skills Canada Competition is the best career exploration field trip in the province, where students can:

  • Watch an inspiring video at Launch Pad for an inside look at where a career in the trades or technologies can take you and get informed about what to expect on the competition floor.
  • Witness Alberta’s best high school and post-secondary students compete in over 45 skilled trade and technology events.
  • Try a variety of hands on activities and discover your skills and interests at the Try-A-Trades® and Try-A-Skills.
  • Learn about career and education options by engaging with industry and education exhibitors in Skill City.

How to get the best field trip experience:

  • We highly recommend teachers register ASAP to get your optimal time slot. Arrival times are 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00 and 12:30. We appreciate your efforts to help us provide a safe and positive experience for visitors by arriving at your scheduled time with your registered number of students. If you arrive outside of your scheduled time, we may ask you to wait as there are building capacity numbers we must adhere to.
  • Beat the rush and busy line ups at the Try-A-Trades! We highly encourage teachers to arrive at 8:30am to eliminate long wait times and to better accommodate student sensory issues.
  • An event floor plan – print and share this ahead of time with your students. It is helpful if they want to identify some areas of interest. The activities with a Try-A-Trade® symbol will have an interactive, hands-on activity. These get very busy and long line ups may occur. An interactive map (via a device) can be found HERE.
  • Bus drop-off/pick-up map – please adhere to this route. We have designed it to ensure a safe arrival for students. There will be an attendant outside to help identify where to pull up/drop-off/pick-up and to greet you.
  • Once you have been greeted by a Skills Canada Alberta representative, we will ask for your school name and the number of students on your bus. This information will be recorded on a piece of paper that you must take to your first mandatory stop – LAUNCH PAD!
  • At Launch Pad, please hand the paper to a Skills Canada Alberta representative who will officially register you as attending the field trip. After watching a quick 3 minute video, teachers can lead students to the main halls to see the competition floor, Try-A-Trades and Skills City booths.
  • Skills Canada Alberta does not offer lunch for field trips. We highly recommend that students bring a packed lunch. There are spaces to eat along the EXPO concourse and green spaces outside. EXPO offers a small food court, but we are not responsible for the long wait lines that will occur here.
  • Please expect a LOT of noise and huge crowds. We do our best to implement designated arrival times to avoid huge crowds. If there are students with sensory issues, we do provide a special space if needed.
  • Travel subsidies are available for your school to attend a field trip to the Provincial Skills Canada Competition. After registering your school at Launch Pad and after attending the School Field Trip, we will e-mail you a form to complete in order to obtain your subsidy. Please note that to complete the submission, you will need to send us a copy of your transportation receipts (bus invoice, gas receipt, mileage form, etc.). Each approved subsidy will receive a cheque for a maximum of $0/per bus based on your transportation costs. Cheques will be made out to the school.

  • Fundamental movement skills provide a base for the more complex skills used in gymnastics and involve landings, locomotions, statics, swings, springs and rotations
  • Learning basic gymnastics terminology creates enthusiasm for the sport and gives students an advantage if they choose to continue with gymnastics
  • Understanding how to safely use the gymnastics equipment promotes responsibility and accountability among students

Billing will be completed prior to your field trip(s). It can be paid for online prior to your arrival, at our front desk if requested, or immediately after your field trip(s). Invoices can be paid via Credit Card, Cash, Cheque or EFT. Invoicing will be based off of the number of students confirmed 15 days prior to your arrival . While Alberta’s capital city has plenty to offer on its own, if you want to escape the bustle of the city for a day during your trip, there are many options to choose from. Day trips from Edmonton can include bison-spotting, exploring a cultural heritage village, or strolling on a beach! Those activities (and much more) are all possible.

So pack up early from your Edmonton hotel and hit the road for a unique experience in the areas surrounding the city.

Ideas for Day Trips from Edmonton

A ukrainian tour including the ukrainian cultural heritage village.

With hundreds of thousands of people claiming Ukrainian heritage in the province, Ukrainian immigration has played a huge role in shaping Alberta’s cultural identity. Explore that side of Alberta’s culture with a day trip to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, a living museum found approximately 45 minutes east of Edmonton. There, you can walk through more than 40 authentic homes and buildings restored to their original early 20th-century appearances, or visit the main museum to learn about Ukrainian history through exhibits and galleries. The Ukrainian Cultural Village is open from June to September – Wednesday to Sunday and visitors should plan for two or three hours to tour the museum and see all the buildings.

A day trip from Edmonton to see an Orthodox church at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.

But the Ukrainian tour doesn’t have to stop there! Other notable Edmonton day trips for a Ukrainian experience include a visit to the Glendon Pyrogy (the world’s largest pierogi sculpture), the Vegreville Pysanka (a giant Ukrainian-style Easter egg), and a taste of the world-famous Mundare sausage (found at Stawnichy’s Mundare Sausage).

Elk Island National Park

Found only a half-hour drive east of Edmonton , Elk Island National Park is one of our favourite day trips from Edmonton. Perfect for families, the park focuses on the conservation of the Plains bison. A refuge for bison, elk, and more than 250 types of birds, the park is excellent for wildlife viewing, stargazing, picnicking, cycling, and even camping. It’s also a fantastic spot for viewing northern lights in Alberta so be sure to check the forecast.

Hikers will love the 80 kilometres of trails to explore , while kids will absolutely love witnessing a “bison traffic jam” – a herd of bison crossing the street – all from the safety of your vehicle. If you’re looking for a reprieve from city life, Elk Island National Park might just be it.

A day trip from Edmonton to Elk Island National Park to see bison and explore the wilderness.

Anthropological History in Alberta

With such rich and diverse anthropological history in Alberta, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly the best day trips from Edmonton to experience it for yourself. The Historic Markerville Creamery Museum, approximately two hours south of Edmonton, is a terrific place to start.

Head to this traditionally Icelandic community where you’ll see the original building and learn about butter production in the early 20th century. Just make sure to enjoy an ice cream afterward! You can also visit nearby Stephansson House , once the home of Icelandic poet Stephan G. Stephansson. Often called the “Poet of the Rocky Mountains” this farmer by day, poet by night was inspired by the natural beauty of Alberta.

Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site

If you’re interested in the Indigenous history in Alberta and don’t mind a slightly longer road trip, head south of Edmonton to Sundre. Here you’ll find guided tours through the Mahikan Trails , where you can learn about the significance of the nature that surrounds you.

You can also head to the Painted Warriors Indigenous Outdoor Experience, a place to experience the traditional and present-day lifestyle, skills, and activities of the Saulteaux and Cree peoples of Alberta. (This is one of many exceptional Indigenous experiences in Alberta .)

Painted Warriors Sundre

Sylvan Lake

We shouldn’t play favourites, but one of our top picks for day trips from Edmonton has to be Sylvan Lake. Less than a couple of hours from Edmonton (south), this town has it all: superb shopping and great restaurants in Sylvan Lake , gorgeous views over the water, and plenty to do.

In summer, spend your day on the lake in a kayak or stand-up paddleboard, while in winter, take advantage of the local rentals of snowshoes and ice-fishing shacks. With a golf course, farmer’s market, and aquatic playground on the lake, it’s almost guaranteed there’s something for everyone in Sylvan Lake.

Nearby, you’ll also find Sylvan Lake Provincial Park , where you’ll find fantastic walking and hiking trails, a beach, and picnic spots (though be warned, the beach gets busy on the weekend!). All in all, a visit to Sylvan Lake is worth the road trip. For more info, check out our article on all the fun things to do in Sylvan Lake .

A popular day trip from Edmonton to is Sylvan Lake to have fun on the beach.

About an hour and a half south of the city, Lacombe is an amazing choice when it comes to day trips from Edmonton. A walk through Lacombe may feel as though you’ve stepped back in time, especially when you head to the Blacksmith Shop Museum or Michener House Museum, or if you sample some of the farm-to-table cuisines served at local restaurants and the farmer’s market.

A real highlight of a trip to Lacombe is a visit to the Kraay Family Farm ; in summer, the farm is home to a giant corn maze, tractor pull, petting zoo, mini-golf, obstacle courses, and so much more, making it an amazing place to take children.

Lacombe is also the site of Alberta’s first provincial park: the Aspen Beach Provincial Park . Gull Lake continues to be a popular vacation spot within the park; head here for a day on the beach, where you’ll find a boat launch, picnic tables, fire pits, and a play area for the kids.

Kraay Family Farm Lacombe

Just south of the city, a visit to Leduc is one of the best things to do near Edmonton. Leduc’s Main Street alone could keep you busy for a day… think bakeries, a craft brewery, and restaurants serving cuisine that represents the diverse immigrant history in Canada. Shopaholics will love the range of local boutiques, selling everything from vintage clothing to sustainable bath products to Canadian-made housewares, while nature enthusiasts will enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and water activities available at Telford Lake.

A city that prides itself on its artistic inclinations, expect to see a lot of musical instruments around town, too; xylophones, drum sets, and sound tubes are installed all over the city to encourage people to play, have fun, and make some art of their own. We’d say that this makes a day trip to Leduc perfect for kids, but let’s face it, adults will find the instruments just as fun!

A quick day trip from Edmonton to Leduc and stroll down the Main Street in summer.

Coming from the Cree word wītaskiwinihk , meaning “the hills where peace was made”, Wetaskiwin is a small city about an hour’s drive south of Edmonton. History buffs will love exploring the community, as it’s home to Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame, the Wetaskiwin District Heritage Museum Centre, and the Reynolds-Alberta Museum, where you’ll find an outstanding collection of antique planes and automobiles.

Nearby, you’ll also find the Alberta Central Railway Museum, a charming railway museum featuring the history of the rail and grain industries in Central Alberta and their impact on Canada as a whole.

But there’s more than just museums – there are lots of fun things to do in Wetaskiwin . Spend some time in the local cafés and coffee shops, go for a walk in By-the-Lake Park, shop at Wild West Gallery for Indigenous art and jewelry, and head to the water tower in town, one of the oldest in Canada.

Reynolds Museum in Wetaskawin AB

Jurassic Forest

Perfect for a fun day trip with the kids, you’ll find Jurassic Forest about 40 minutes north of Edmonton. This 40-acre prehistoric reserve is home to a beautiful boreal forest and, most excitingly, dozens of animatronic dinosaurs that can be seen from wooden trails (wheelchair and stroller friendly).

Known as THE spot to learn about dinosaurs in Canada, Alberta naturally has plenty of opportunities to study extinct animals, and Jurassic Forest is no exception. It’s quite the thrill to walk through the forest and see what life may have been like for these Jurassic creatures! Both educational and entertaining, this is one of our favourite day trips from Edmonton and you can spend hours exploring one of the best interactive experiences in all of Western Canada.

Jurassic Forest in Gibbons, AB

University of Alberta Botanic Gardens

The University of Alberta Edmonton Botanical Gardens is Alberta’s largest botanic garden, and it’s certainly worth taking the time to explore. Found a short distance west of Edmonton, the 97 hectares are filled with botanical beauty representing the best of Alberta and around the world. Spend several hours or a whole day in nature as you picnic, walk along the trails, and take in one of the many exhibits or specialty gardens, including the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, the Indigenous Garden, and the Aga Khan Garden. Book a twilight picnic experience in June or July to celebrate a special occasion, or take advantage of one of the many events that take place all summer.

In the colder months, head to the University of Alberta Botanic Garden to participate in Luminaria, where all of the trails become illuminated with lights and candles to create a magical winter wonderland.

Devonian Gardens

UFO Landing Pad

A UFO Landing Pad? In Alberta? That’s right, about two hours east of Edmonton you’ll find this quirky landmark in the town of St. Paul. Perhaps one of the most fun and unusual Edmonton day trips, the landing pad was proposed and approved in 1967. Although it’s yet to be used… one never knows when it might come in handy!

While you’re not on the search for Martians, explore the town, play a round of golf at the St. Paul Golf Course, or wander through one of the local museums.

A day trip from Edmonton to see the UFO Landing Pad St. Paul, Alberta

Hiking in Athabasca

Don’t be fooled into thinking that all the best hiking in Alberta is done in the Rockies. There are great hiking day trips from Edmonton, too! Your best bet is to head north of Edmonton to the Athabasca region , where you’ll find plenty of hiking trails with beautiful views over Central Alberta, including Poacher’s Landing, Peace River Trail, Muskeg Creek Trail, and the Athabasca Landing Trail. Many of the trails are also used as biking trails in summer, while snowmobilers will love the region in winter.

Most trails include interpretive signage to explain the history of the region and the wildlife you may spot along the way. Pack a picnic, enjoy the fresh air, and spend a few hours in nature to relax and rejuvenate.

College Football Playoff 12-team field projection: Why I like Miami, Penn State and Texas

COLUMBUS, OH - APRIL 13: Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard (18) passes the ball during the Ohio State Spring Game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on April 13, 2024. (Photo by Jason Mowry/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Picking a preseason top 25? That’s easy. Projecting the 12-team College Football Playoff field? That’s trickier. The most vexing part? There’s the elephant in the room. And the bulldog, the longhorn, the tiger … and Lane Kiffin. If I were picking my preseason top 25, I’d have five SEC teams in my top 12, but I doubt that there will be that many teams from one league in the first expanded CFP.

Remember the expanded Playoff formula : The five highest-ranked conference champions receive automatic bids and seven at-large spots are given to the next highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded 1-4 in the expanded Playoff. Those teams have a first-round bye. Seeds 5-8 host a first-round game and quarterfinals and semifinals are at bowl sites.

With that in mind, here’s my first crack at the CFP 12 for the 2024 season.

best field trips in edmonton

1. Ohio State: What an offseason

I love what the Buckeyes have done this offseason. Many stud players return, most notably JT Tuimoloau, Jack Sawyer, TreVeyon Henderson and Emeka Egbuka. Ryan Day struck gold in the portal with Alabama safety Caleb Downs and Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins. He also has the nation’s best recruit, WR Jeremiah Smith, a 6-foot-3, 220-pounder who has folks inside the program thinking he’s the most gifted wideout the Buckeyes have ever had. Obviously a huge statement given the NFL talent they’ve developed in the past decade.

The QB spot is a concern. The hunch here is that ex-Kansas State QB Will Howard, a smart, experienced leader, will be the starter. This team is so talented; the Buckeyes don’t need Howard to be CJ Stroud, but he’s a good enough running threat to keep defenses honest, and he should be able to exploit the talent around him. Expect a more physical Buckeyes attack in 2024 as OSU reclaims the top spot in the Big Ten. The schedule is challenging, especially with a trip to Oregon right after hosting a physical Iowa team and a trip to Penn State shortly thereafter. Ohio State hosts Michigan this year. I’ll be surprised if the Buckeyes don’t end the streak this year. (Then again, I did think they’d beat Michigan the last time the Wolverines came to Columbus.)

2. Georgia: A murderous schedule, but too talented and too deep to not make a go

The Bulldogs missed the CFP last year and took it out on a depleted FSU team in the Orange Bowl. Their schedule is one of the hardest in the country: road trips to Alabama, Texas, Ole Miss and Kentucky, which has beaten four Top-25 teams at home in the past three years. They host a good Tennessee team and open the season with a neutral-site matchup against Clemson. But the Bulldogs return 16 starters, including Mykel Williams and Malaki Starks, plus a potential top-10 pick at QB in Carson Beck. Georgia added a big playmaking WR from Miami in Colbie Young. Georgia is too deep and too talented not to make it deep into the postseason.

3. Florida State: Ready to reload with a chip on its shoulder

Even with a ton of guys gone to the NFL, Mike Norvell has a squad ready to reload and make the expanded postseason — especially after last season’s drama . Only eight starters return, but the buzz inside the program is high about how ready some of the new starters are to break out. Patrick Payton leads a very talented defensive front and has Marvin Jones Jr., the Georgia transfer, across from him; I’m told he’s ready to have a monster season. Miami transfer Darrell Jackson is a massive presence. Watch out for CB Azareye’h Thomas, who could make a run at All-American honors.

The big question: How potent will DJ Uiagalelei be? He’s back in the ACC after making some strides at Oregon State. His ability to run should fit well in Norvell’s system. Transfers Malik Benson and Roydell Williams (both from Alabama) and Jaylin Lucas (Indiana) will add a spark. The Noles get Clemson at home and have trips to Miami and Notre Dame, and also will play a good Memphis team after a bye. A 10-2 run sounds about right, unless DJ U takes another big step.

4. Utah: A return to form

Last year’s Utes were gutted by injury, notably with QB Cam Rising, all-conference TE Brant Kuithe and versatile back Micah Bernard. All are back; Rising — entering his seventh season — is one of the best QBs in the country. Dorian Singer, who put up big numbers in 2022 for Arizona, has transferred in from USC. Singer’s not a burner but he has terrific ball skills and should be a good addition. The defense, even without stars Jonah Elliss and Cole Bishop, should still be one of the best in the Big 12. The Utes don’t play two of the Big 12’s top teams, Kansas State and Kansas — but they do visit Oklahoma State and UCF. But this very seasoned team led by Rising should handle the road well.

5. Texas: Don’t be surprised

The Longhorns came within one play of making the title game last year. Don’t be surprised if they get there this season. Quinn Ewers will continue to blossom in Steve Sarkisian’s system. Texas did lose two elite wideouts, but added a bunch of talent in the portal in Oregon State’s Silas Bolden, Alabama’s Isaiah Bond and Houston’s Matthew Golden. DeAndre Moore, Johntay Cook and Ryan Wingo are all gifted young receivers.

Texas will miss the talented interior DT combo of Byron Murphy and T’Vondre Sweat, but Texas’ pass rush on the edge will be even better with the arrival of former UTSA star Trey Moore, who had 14 sacks in 2023 and has generated a lot of buzz inside the program. The schedule is interesting early with a trip to a reloading Michigan with a still-nasty defense. Texas plays Oklahoma and Georgia back-to-back.

6. Oregon: Best of the Big Ten’s newcomers

The Ducks are the most talented of the four Pac-12 additions to the Big Ten. Incoming QB Dillon Gabriel should be a great fit in offensive coordinator Will Stein’s system. Gabriel’s really accurate, has a quick trigger and can do some damage with his wheels. Oregon added talented Texas A&M transfer Evan Stewart to join Tez Johnson, in addition to adding Washington CB Jabbar Muhammad. The Ducks get Ohio State in Autzen before visiting Michigan and Wisconsin; they have a very good shot of going at least 11-1 in the regular season.

7. Ole Miss: Key returners and great portal additions

The Rebels capped an 11-win season with a No. 9 finish and return a lot of key pieces, led by QB Jaxson Dart. He’s got first-round talent if he can continue his growth, especially in taking care of the football. Ole Miss added a bunch of beef on both lines from the portal, nabbing, among others, Texas A&M’s Walter Nolen and Florida’s Princely Umanmielen on the D-line and Washington’s Nate Kalepo and Julius Buelow on the O-line. Ole Miss visits LSU and Florida and should be favored in both. It gets a week off before Oklahoma comes to town; Georgia plays in Oxford as well. A 10-2 season seems very realistic.

8. Notre Dame: An OC-QB combo with great upside

Marcus Freeman has upgraded the Fighting Irish’s athleticism, which should really show on defense. Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills are disruptive forces up front and Ben Morrison and Xavier Watts both are All-American caliber on the back end. The offense figures to look quite different with OC Mike Denbrock returning to South Bend after a terrific two-year run at LSU. Duke transfer Riley Leonard brings much more of a running threat at QB. The season opener could be rough: The Irish visit Texas A&M to face the man who knows Leonard best, new Aggies head coach Mike Elko, his former head coach with the Blue Devils. Later, the Irish receive visitors Louisville and FSU, which will both be very dangerous, and then go to USC, which the Irish whupped last season.

9. Alabama: New-look Tide with proven talent and leadership

Kalen DeBoer led Washington to the national title game only two years removed from a 4-8 Huskies campaign. Now, he has an even bigger challenge: replacing Nick Saban. Jalen Milroe had a fantastic second half of last season. DeBoer has raved about his new QB’s work ethic. If Milroe can continue to blossom, he could become an even bigger problem for opposing defenses. The Tide are still very big and physical, but the secondary needs foundation work after losing two terrific corners and an elite safety. They added an athletic safety in Michigan transfer Keon Sabb, while ex-USC corner Domani Jackson is blazing fast and exceptionally talented. The Tide will face a deep schedule: vs. Georgia, at Wisconsin, at Tennessee, vs. Missouri, at LSU, at Oklahoma, and of course the Iron Bowl. It’s very possible they play five top-15 teams, three of them on the road.

10. Penn State: Bet on an improved offense

New defensive coordinator Tom Allen, former Indiana head coach, takes over for Manny Diaz. Coaches who’ve worked with Allen think highly of his defensive acumen and ability to connect with players. But offense was PSU’s biggest headache last year. Mike Yurcich is out and Andy Kotelnicki is in from Kansas. He did a superb job with the Jayhawks in spite of many injuries at QB the past few years. Twenty-year-old QB Drew Allar did a lot of good things in his first year as a starter (25 TDs, 2 INTs), but he and the offense fizzled in big games. They ranked No. 10 in the Big Ten in pass plays of 20-plus yards in 2023; improving explosiveness will be key, and former OSU WR Julian Fleming should help that. The running backs, led by Nick Singleton, are really talented. The opener at West Virginia will be a stiff test; the Nittany Lions also visit USC and Wisconsin. There’s probably only one team with close to Penn State’s talent on the schedule: Ohio State, which visits State College.

11. Miami: Time to buy in

Miami has had just one top-10 finish in 20 years (2017). So why am I buying this version of the Canes? Miami has made a huge commitment to NIL, and its big free-agent additions prove that, starting with former Washington State QB Cam Ward. Everything I’ve heard out of Miami has been exceptional regarding Ward. He has an excellent arm, the knack for extending and making plays and brings leadership, something that the Canes have lacked there for a while.

Adding bruising RB Damien Martinez from Oregon State was another big get, and ex-Houston WR Sam Brown will add more punch to a potent group of receivers. The D-line also was significantly upgraded to help out budding superstar Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor. Miami starts on the road at Florida, which is in a rebuild, but The Swamp is never easy. Miami gets FSU at home. A 10-win season given all the infusion of talent here feels very realistic.

12. Memphis: Loads of talented returners

An excellent subplot this fall will be keeping an eye on the Group of 5 spot. My pick is the Tigers, who beat Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl en route to a 10-win season. The Tigers have been able to keep their big stars, which is really hard to do these days, especially if you aren’t a Power 4 program. Quarterback Seth Henigan has thrown 79 TDs the past three years and he’s a decent runner. His go-to guy Roc Taylor, a 6-3, 225-pound Freak, is at his best in big games. He had eight catches for 102 yards in the bowl win and seven catches for 143 yards in a close loss against last season’s breakout Missouri team.

Mario Anderson, South Carolina’s leading rusher last year, will boost a talented backfield, where speedy Sutton Smith looks like one of those old game-breaking Tigers RBs from the Mike Norvell days. The Tigers visit FSU in September, but after that, they should be more talented than everyone else they face, although games at USF and Tulane should be good challenges.

Bracket notes

  • Other programs I think will be serious contenders for the Group of 5 spot: UTSA, Tulane, Boise State, Liberty and App State.
  • I omitted Missouri, which is coming off of a fantastic year that was capped by a bowl win against Ohio State. The Tigers return Brady Cook, along with a dynamic WR combo in Luther Burden III and Theo Wease. The O-line will be really good again too, although RB Cody Schrader will be missed. Defensive coordinator Blake Baker is also gone, coaching now at LSU. The Tigers’ schedule is extremely manageable by SEC standards, with trips to Texas A&M and Alabama, though visits from Auburn and Oklahoma should be tough. I struggled with this one more than any other because barring significant injuries, I have a hard time seeing Missouri do worse than 9-3. But I just can’t see a fifth SEC team getting in.
  • Michigan is the defending national champion and maintains its impressive talent level on defense. I like what the Wolverines have done this spring, boosting their secondary through the portal. I see them in the 8-4/9-3 range, but I think they lost too many vital leaders from the national title team — not just Jim Harbaugh, but J.J. McCarthy, Blake Corum, the entire O-line, Mike Sainristil, Michael Barrett and Kris Jenkins. If Michigan beats Texas when the Longhorns come to Ann Arbor, I’ll probably regret this pick. But until that happens, I feel this team is in for more of a rebuild.

Stanley Cup dream, historic comeback suddenly real for McDavid, Oilers on eve of Game 7

'you always dreamt of ... scoring that big goal," edmonton's mcdavid says.

Social Sharing

Connor McDavid envisioned this moment.

Growing up in the suburbs north of Toronto — whether it was the outdoor rinks, the arenas or on the street with friends — hockey glory danced in his mind's eye.

Just like countless Canadian kids.

"You always dreamt of yourself playing in that game and scoring that big goal," McDavid said. "You're not sure you're ever going to get that opportunity."

After a roller-coaster season and a playoffs with plenty more twists and turns, the stage is set for the superstar captain.

McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers face the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final Monday — the last hurdle in an improbable journey this season.

A disastrous start to the schedule. Last in the overall standings. A coaching change. A near-record-breaking winning streak. Playoff pushback.

And a trio of victories after trailing the title series 3-0.

Oilers crush Panthers in Game 6 of Stanley Cup final forcing a Game 7

"It's been fun to be a part of," McDavid said. "The group has played some of our best hockey over the course of the last seven, eight days. We feel good about where things are at.

"It comes down to one game."

Edmonton is looking to become just the fifth team in NHL history to win a best-of-seven series after trailing 3-0. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs — in the middle of the Second World War, some 82 years ago — are the only club to accomplish the feat in the final when they stormed back on the Detroit Red Wings.

The Oilers, who last sat atop the NHL mountain in 1990 when the franchise won its fifth championship, can also end the Cup drought for Canadian-based clubs dating back to the Montreal Canadiens' 1993 victory.

"We're all human, and we're aware of the situation and what we've accomplished so far," said Edmonton centre Leon Draisaitl, the Robin to McDavid's Batman through their careers in the Alberta capital. "We have to focus on winning one hockey game on the road and play our best.

"All the stories will take care of itself after."

Florida raced out to its 3-0 lead before McDavid took over in Game 4 and Game 5 with a pair of mesmerizing four-point displays.

The Oilers then picked up a 5-1 victory in Game 6 — the third time the Cup was polished and ready to be presented to the Panthers — at home Friday to send everyone back to South Florida.

  • Oilers erase 3-0 series deficit, beat Panthers to force Game 7 in Stanley Cup final

"Just sticking with it," Edmonton centre Adam Henrique said. "Believing in each other."

Florida, meanwhile, is aiming to avoid an ugly place in the record books.

The Panthers remain in a terrific position to win the franchise's first Cup after losing in the 1996 final and then again last spring. But the motivation of not having your name associated with an epic collapse might be just as big a motivator.

"Doesn't matter how it's gone or how you draw it up," Panthers winger Matthew Tkachuk said at the team's Fort Lauderdale practice facility ahead of the 1,400th and final contest of the NHL campaign. "They lost the first three, we lost the next three, it's even right now. It doesn't matter what has happened to get to this point.

"It's easy to forget."

Edmonton, which holds a 20-5 aggregate scoreline over the last 10 periods, has ridden solid goaltending Stuart Skinner and detail-oriented defensive structure to get into a position not many outside the locker room predicted just 10 days ago.

It is, however, slightly easier to believe when your team has the best player in the world.

  • Playoff benching pushes Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner 'to fight my way'

A hockey goalie kneels at practice.

"He can do magical things," Edmonton winger Corey Perry said of McDavid, a three-time NHL MVP. "It's not a switch he flips, but all of a sudden he's dancing through three or four guys."

The only Oilers player with a Cup ring won with Anaheim in 2007. Perry then lost in 2020 with Dallas, in 2021 with Montreal, and in 2022 with Tampa Bay.

"You dream of playing Game 7s and being a hero, on the backyard rink, on the street," he said. "Now it's reality. Now you get to live that. Somebody, and hopefully he's in this room, will go down in history for being the hero."

The Panthers have the same hope.

"I was one of those kids," Florida captain Aleksander Barkov said. "I'm thinking about like, 'This is Game 7 of the Stanley Cup playoffs.' You think about those moments.

"Now it's becoming a truth -  the most exciting time to be a hockey player."

It's fitting on some level the furthest distance between cities in a final — Edmonton and Sunrise are more than 4,000 kilometres apart — is going the distance.

"It's been a long road to get to this point," said McDavid, the first pick at the 2015 draft and hockey's most-hyped talent since Sidney Crosby.

"A lot of ups and downs, a lot of lessons along the way."

And a lot of dreams about what Monday might bring.

Stop in Alberta Beach for some coffee, lunch or antique shopping, or a picnic by the water.

Continue on Highway 43 to Whitecourt and follow the signs for Hard Luck Canyon . It’s an easy 5-minute hike and then some stairs which take you down into the canyon bed and waterfall.

It’s a gorgeous spot to play in the water on a hot summer day.

Then, head south on Highway 32 for one of the nicest drives around Edmonton. This road is almost a copycat of the scenic David Thompson Highway (but with no cars).

Stop in at the Apex Predator Brewery just north of Edson.

It’s tucked away in the woodlands, but makes for a delightful patio experience (and you can bring your dog to this one).

For more bevvies, head over to Rocky Mountain Big Horn Distillery (only 15 minutes away) for some craft cocktails.

2. Babas, Bison and Big Burgers (or Caesars)!

best field trips in edmonton

This road trip from Edmonton takes you east of the city.

Take the Yellowhead Highway to the quaint town of Mundare, Alberta.

Along their adorably scenic main street you’ll find Baba’s Bistro. Stop in for authentic Ukrainian food – try homemade Borsch and a plate of perogies, sausage and cabbage rolls (it’s all made super fresh).

If you’re not that hungry, not to worry. Have a slice of pie or gigantic cinnamon bun and a cup of coffee.

Local art adorns each wall and antique furniture finishes off the charm of this bistro.

Down the street, you’ve got to stop by the world’s biggest sausage!

Then make your way to the town of Lamont and go hunting for treasures at the Elk Island Thrift Store.

Just south of Lamont is the north entrance to Elk Island National Park. Go for a scenic cruise and see if you can spot some bison!

The bison roam wild throughout the park, and sometimes they’ll come right up to your car!

If you need to work off some lunch, there are a variety of hiking and walking trails throughout the park.

When you’re ready for a big meal to finish the day, it’s time to head to the Unwind Bar & Grill in Andrew, Alberta – home of the revved up drinks!

Order the Caesars that comes with a burger, poutine, mac ‘n cheese bites and fried pickles ON TOP of the burger!

I order the one that comes with a bit of everything – dry ribs, cactus cut potatoes, jalapeno poppers, fried pickles, onion rings and who knows what else was on there!

The staff and locals are super friendly, and if you find yourself wanting to do this day trip on a Sunday, make Andrew your first stop. They serve a breakfast buffet and bottomless mimosas for $15!

3. Botanical Garden Tour

How about a road trip to stroll through gorgeous flower gardens?

Stop by the St. Albert Botanic Park , and wander through the adorable cottage gardens for some of the most picture perfect photography spots near Edmonton.

Then, continue west along Highway 43 for another 45 minutes until you reach the George Pegg Botanic Gardens, a spectacular peaceful spot in rural Alberta.

There are a couple historic farmhouses, flower gardens, interpretive signage and a tranquil boardwalk through the trees.

4. Wine Spa & Unique Goodies in Red Deer

best field trips in edmonton

This one is perfect for a girls getaway or even a fun way to celebrate a low-key bachelorette party.

Make reservations at the Solorzano Spa, Café and Wine Bar . This day spa is located within a cozy historic home built in 1906 and has kept all of its vintage charm.

Upon entering, you’re swept away to a Victorian past, among the original brick and woodwork and collection of vintage decor and antiques.

I recommend booking a vino therapy treatment! Try something like the vino pedicure.

Enjoy 90 minutes of heaven while your feet soak in a tub of merlot and includes a special cabernet scrub and a Grenache spray.

After your treatments, enjoy light snack and a glass of wine in the tea room or on the garden patio.

Then head to Sweet Capone’s for a sweet treat – the best Italian cannoli!

Not only are these pastries to die for (there’s usually dozens of flavours to choose from), the inside of the cafe is eclectic and adorable.

If you want to get outdoors in between the spa and Sweet Capone’s (or afterwards), Red Deer has an abundance of parks and trails to explore.

Visit the Bower Ponds and enjoy the scenic trails, have a picnic with your goodies from the bakery or even rent a paddle boat and get out on the water.

Make this a weekend trip from Edmonton by booking this gorgeous newly renovated home in the heart of the city, close to trails and parks.

5. Trains, T-Rexes and Treats (best for kid-friendly)

This unique day trip north of Edmonton includes trains, dinosaurs and an adventure farm.

On this adventure, you’ll find some of the best kid-friendly places to visit near Edmonton.

Start your day with a stop at the Alberta Railway Museu m where you can witness one of the only few remaining steam locomotives in Canada that still operates.

Plan to spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours here! You can also bring a packed lunch and enjoy a picnic onsite.

There’s also dinosaur themed mini golf, a playground and a sandbox where kids can dig for dino bones and fossils.

If you have time, the Prairie Gardens & Adventure Farm where they have a u-pick, petting zoo animals and fun outdoor farm games for the little kids.

This place is extra special in the fall though, with all the pumpkins and harvest colours and decor.

Or you can head into Fort Saskatchewan and go straight to Miller’s Ice Cream.

It’s located inside an old train station and at the start of a beautiful municipal park where you can stroll around and enjoy the sunshine.

6. Central Alberta Craft Breweries

best field trips in edmonton

For the bigger kids, one of my favorite day trips from Edmonton with a dog is to visit some rural Alberta breweries and their patios!

Of course, you can still visit without your furry friend, but these ones are dog friendly.

Head south to Rimbey (about 1.5 hours) to visit Hawk Tail Brewery. The views from the patio are picturesque as you overlook the farmer fields across the highway.

Travel tip – the last couple weeks of July is when the canola fields pop their gorgeous golden colour.

best field trips in edmonton

Then head to Sylvan Lake to visit Snake Lake Brewery. It’s not located on the lakeshore, but the patio is big and the beers are crushable!

From here, you can head into Red Deer and start to make your way back north. We loved Sawback Brewing and Troubled Monk.

best field trips in edmonton

Make one more stop in Lacombe at Blindman Brewing which always has a ton of unique beers on tap, and they’ve got a great big patio area complete with couches.

Make this into a weekend trip from Edmonton and spend some time at Gull Lake.

It’s got a massive beach and is perfect for swimming or catching some rays.

You can book this cozy guest house for the perfect weekend getaway from Edmonton.

7. Historic Lacombe and Rural Attractions

Lacombe is less than 1.5 hours from Edmonton, and has one of the most picturesque historic downtowns in the province.

Most notably is the flatiron building which is the oldest in Alberta and now home to the visitor centre.

best field trips in edmonton

Go boutique shopping, take a walking tour of all the murals and be sure to end your day with dinner at Cilantro and Chive .

P.S. don’t miss the Sweet Capone’s Bakery for their famous cannoli or another sweet treat.

If you want to spend a whole day in the area, spend some time at the rural attractions nearby.

Ellis Bird Farm deserves a visit, where you can stroll through the trails, butterfly gardens and ponds, admire the large collection of bird houses and enjoy a coffee or snack at the tea house.

best field trips in edmonton

For a little more adventure-paced, head to Kraay Family Farm for a corn maze, mini golf, farm animals, tractor train rides, a mini zipline and over 30 more activities for the kids.

Tip – take a look at these other ideas in this local guidebook titled Best Day Trips from Edmonton .

8. Hiking and History East of Edmonton

For a couple places that aren’t too far from Edmonton but feel like a world away, head east for about 45 minutes.

Start at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village , an outdoor living museum that tells the important history of the Ukrainian settlers to this area from the late 1800s to the 1930s.

best field trips in edmonton

All the buildings in this establishment are real houses, businesses and churches that were donated and moved to the museum to be restored for visitors to enjoy.

Fuel up with some Ukrainian food at the restaurant and then work it off with a hike at Elk Island National Park, only a few minutes away.

If you visit at dusk you’ll have a better chance to see bison and other wildlife! And if it’s going to be a clear night, stay for the star gazing.

9. The Village at Pigeon Lake

Only an hour south of Edmonton is a cute tourist destination known as the Village at Pigeon Lake.

All the buildings remind you of cape cod style architecture and the community has a cute little park in the middle of the shops.

best field trips in edmonton

There’s a great antique store, a couple of boutique shops, great ice cream and a couple restaurants.

The lake is 5 minutes away if you want to check out the beach, have a picnic by the water and then go play mini golf at Blackstone.

You could even stay overnight at the Village Creek Country Inn , which made the list for the top romantic getaways in Alberta .

10. The Dreamcatcher Association

best field trips in edmonton

Spend a morning or afternoon outside at the ranch feeding horses, donkeys, goats and chickens.

This organization’s main mandate is providing nature-assisted therapy, but they’ve recently added public programming called Time on the Land for those that just need to get out of the house and spend some time with the animals.

The ranch is located near Ardrossan, about 30 minutes east of Edmonton.

If you want to continue your day outside, a little further east is the Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Outdoor Recreation Area with lots of hiking trails.

11. Wine Tastings and Historic Camrose

best field trips in edmonton

Make your way east for some wine tasting, historic main streets and sweets.

Your first stop is at Barr Estate Winery, just off of Highway 14, only 20 minutes from the city.

This rustic-chic farm is a picturesque setting for a fruit winery. Stop in for a tour and tasting, where you’ll sample both whites and reds made from rhubarb and raspberries.

Continue east of Edmonton toward New Sarepta, home to Alberta’s newest mead winery – Old Station Honey and Mead .

Tastings are conducted in an old renovated fire hall – you’ll love the story of how this winery came about.

Once you’re ready for some more country scenery, make your way to the historic community of Camrose.

Downtown Camrose has one of the best main streets in all of Alberta.

Enjoy some boutique shopping or stop in at one of the many bakeries for some sugary sustenance. The Sweeterie is my favorite.

If you prefer to stroll through some parks, Mirror Lake is stunning in the summer time, where you can watch Trumpeter Swans glide through the water.

If it’s hot out, the local ice cream shack at Mirror Lake is the best way to beat the heat.

And if you’re able to stay in town for dinner, Hart House offers a fine dining experience among a casual gastropub vibe, inside a heritage home!

Try the locally sourced menu items like buffalo or walleye – but the wine selection and charcuterie boards are always a hit.

12. Country Delights and Flower Farms

best field trips in edmonton

On this day trip you’ll discover donuts, antique shopping, a flower farm and maybe more wine or a brewery!

Start this one early! Head southwest to the hamlet of Calmar, and go straight to the Calmar Bakery.

They sell out early so you don’t want to miss out. Just read the reviews – many of them say they’re the best in Canada!

If you like antique shopping, you’ll love strolling through treasures to be found across the street at the aptly named, Yesterday’s Treasures.

Not far from here, you can visit Bio-Way Gardens, which has a mini-farmer’s market and a tea house on site!

Continue onwards to Sunnybrook to visit a flower farm – Farm Fresh Florals, where you can u-pick your own flower bouquet!

Don’t miss shopping at the Silo Farm Store (onsite at the flower farm), which has locally made goods and vintage and antique home decor.

If you’re feeling thirsty or peckish on your way back to Edmonton, make a stop in the Village of Pigeon Lake at Familia Brewing, just opened in 2022.

13. A Vintage Adventure

best field trips in edmonton

This trip takes you south through a small town to the Reynolds Alberta Museum, which boasts an impressive collection of agricultural, industrial, mechanical and aviation artifacts and technologies of the past.

Make your way south to Highway 2A to the town of Millet. Stop in at the Old Bank Café, located in – you guessed it – an old bank building!

This cafe, bakery and bistro has kept the vintage charm of its early years and now serves the perfect cup of coffee, breakfast plates and light lunches.

If you’re a fan of fancy breakfasts, try the brioche French toast stuffed with cheesecake filling!

Then only 15 minutes down Highway 2A, you’ll arrive at the Reynolds Alberta Museum.

If you’ve never been here before, or if it’s been years since your last visit, you’ll be so impressed by the every growing collection of restored vintage cars and farm equipment that was used all over Alberta.

The aviation portion of the museum has plenty of activities for kids, and you can even take part in a behind the scenes ‘white glove’ warehouse tour.

There are often events happening all summer long, so check the website for more info!

14. Country Cafes and Confections: Rural Foodie Tour

best field trips in edmonton

Start off at Cherry Lane Café (also a bed & breakfast). This quaint country setting is aptly named and looks like you’re entering a scene from the Notebook.

Dine in the vintage-inspired café, where you can choose from gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches.

I had to try the Albertan – layered brisket, bacon, cheddar, mozzarella and caramelized onions – I’m still dreaming about this 2 weeks later

And make sure you save room for the decadent salted caramel, 4-layer chocolate cake.

best field trips in edmonton

Our next stop was Stettler – known as the heart of Alberta. I’m a sucker for small town mainstreets, and Stettler fits the bill.

Our main mission though was to pay a visit to Bloke’s Bakery , a Stettler staple.

Here we found classic donuts – you won’t find crumbled potato chips or unicorn parts on top of these to mask the bland dough.

Just the opposite – soft, fresh, gooey and just sweet enough – one might say the perfect donut. If you can’t bring yourself to buy half a dozen, the cream johns are their signature treat.

best field trips in edmonton

We continued south on Highway 56, passing through Big Valley , a charming village with an aesthetic grain elevator and little blue church on the hilltop.

A great place for photography, picnic and a road trip pit stop.

The Jimmy Jock Boardwalk is perfectly quirky and offers fudge, pie and ice cream if you haven’t had enough sugar yet.

best field trips in edmonton

Finally, after descending into the Alberta badlands landscape, we arrive at DNA Gardens which has everything you could want in a country getaway – a farm store, café, trail walks, greenhouses, the friendliest and most hospitable staff and a winery!

best field trips in edmonton

We’re not ones to shy from a beverage or two, so we were delighted to partake in a wine tasting.

Alberta has a budding wine industry, and the fruit wine grown here, from the onsite Delidais Estate Winery is an exceptional showcase of our province’s bountiful produce.

We sampled 8 wines, ranging from cherry, rhubarb, black currant and Saskatoon berries.

Unexpectedly, this fruit wine was dry and crisp, on par with something you’d find along the Naramata Bench in the Okanagan Valley. We left with too many bottles to mention.

best field trips in edmonton

This is a full day trip or you could make a weekend out of it! Stay overnight at Cherry Lane B&B, or the Phoenix House B&B , a lovely heritage home in Stettler.

Connor McDavid’s Oilers drag Panthers back to Edmonton with Game 5 win

McDavid had two goals and two assists as the Oilers prevailed, 5-3, to deny Florida again.

best field trips in edmonton

SUNRISE, Fla. — Connor McDavid’s words after his Edmonton Oilers routed the Florida Panthers in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals became a rallying cry.

“We have to go to Florida,” he said, “do a job and drag them back to Alberta.”

The Oilers did just that with a 5-3 win in Game 5 on Tuesday night at Amerant Bank Arena. It wasn’t as dominant as Saturday’s 8-1 demolition , but they did more than enough — led by McDavid’s two goals and two assists — to stay alive. They need two more wins to achieve Stanley Cup glory, but they’ll be back on home ice Friday to try to secure the first.

The Oilers led 3-0 and 4-1 in the second period but had to fend off a furious comeback attempt by the Panthers, who pulled within a goal early in the third. Stuart Skinner made 29 saves for the Oilers. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 19 shots for Florida.

“It was a total effort from everybody,” McDavid said. “Special teams obviously were great. Penalty kill, there’s nothing else to really say. They’ve been great. [Connor Brown] scores a massive goal there to kind of settle us in. Power play got going and Stu was great. Five-on-five, we just did enough. It was a total team effort, top to bottom.”

The Panthers started Game 5 like a team intent on claiming its first Stanley Cup title on home ice, but Skinner’s prowess carried over from Game 4, beginning with a robbery of Aaron Ekblad and continuing during several intense, high-pressure shifts by Florida.

A penalty against Brett Kulak just 4:47 in felt as though it would provide the release the home crowd was waiting for. Instead, midway through the power play, Brown stole the puck at the blue line and beat Bobrovsky with a patient backhander. It was the second game in a row that Edmonton opened the scoring with a shorthanded tally.

“The difference tonight, special teams,” Oilers Coach Kris Knoblauch said. “I think we were plus-3 tonight on the special teams goals. That definitely helps our team.”

After Brown’s tally, the Panthers recorded just one more shot on goal in the remaining 14:30 of the period. And Niko Mikkola was whistled for interference at the horn, giving the Oilers a power play to begin the second period.

Edmonton’s vaunted power play had yet to click into gear in the finals — its lone power-play tally came on a five-on-three in Game 4 — and for 1 minute 58 seconds, it appeared that trend would continue. But a point shot by Evan Bouchard (three assists) deflected off Zach Hyman at the front of the net and past Bobrovsky with two seconds left on the man advantage, putting the Oilers up 2-0.

McDavid made it 3-0 with a bank shot off Bobrovsky just over three minutes later, leaving the Panthers reeling — and the probability of another 2,500-mile flight to Alberta looming large.

Matthew Tkachuk got Florida on the board 1:53 later with a quick-release finish over Skinner after Evan Rodrigues stole the puck along the boards and fed it to Tkachuk with a head of steam low in the zone.

But a hooking penalty on Kyle Okposo at 10:02 put Edmonton’s newly confident power play back to work, and McDavid did what he does best off the rush, turning the Panthers inside-out as he drove toward the net and dished to Corey Perry for a tap-in at 11:54.

Rodrigues answered 14 seconds later with his fourth goal of the series, but Florida couldn’t draw any closer through 40 minutes despite a strong push in the latter half of the period.

That push carried into the third, and the Panthers needed just 4:04 to draw within a goal. Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, playing on this stage for the first time in the 14th year of his NHL career, found the net off a feed from Tkachuk to fuel a hopeful crowd.

Brown said the Oilers were ready for the challenge.

“We’re comfortable with one-goal games,” he said. “... I think we showed composure. They scored, they stung us in the first five minutes there. We stayed composed. … I think we’re showing our maturity. We’re showing our character as the season goes on. Our confidence and our belief is growing.”

The crowd’s hope started to wear thin as the period stretched on without an equalizer, and the tension ratcheted up when Dmitry Kulikov was penalized for tripping, sending the Oilers back to the power play with 7:32 remaining.

Florida killed that penalty, but having to do so shaved two minutes off the time available for a comeback. The Panthers pulled Bobrovsky for an extra attacker with just over 2:30 left, and McDavid hit the empty net with 17.3 seconds left to do exactly what he wanted: drag the series back to Alberta. The goal gave McDavid his 42nd point of the postseason — and his second consecutive four-point game.

“I love playing in the playoffs,” McDavid said. “I love playing with this group. It’s been a fun ride and we’re glad it’s going to go one more day. But that’s all we’ve earned here: Another day, another flight. We’ll be ready to go in Edmonton on Friday.”

The odds remain stacked against the Oilers, even as they return home for Game 6 and carry a growing belief with them. But the odds were stacked against Edmonton early in the season, too, when a slow start led to a coaching change and required a steady climb up the standings throughout the season just to get into the playoffs.

Brown has repeated throughout the series that he believes the Oilers are at their best with their backs against the wall. Their situation is still perilous, but they’re not bothered by it.

“I know a lot of guys counted us out. We’ve been counted out a lot through the playoffs, regular season, whatever,” Knoblauch said. “It doesn’t faze the group in there. They’ve got a lot of belief — a lot of belief — and a lot of just enjoying every extra day, because we were counted out a long time ago, and we’re still here playing hockey in June. We’re going back to Edmonton for Game 6. There’s a lot to smile about.”
