Is it safe to visit Ivory Coast? It’s a question I’ve been asked more than once.

This travel guide to Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) aims to be an introduction to a country largely unknown to the English-speaking world. It is nation that can be said to wear its heart on its sleeve. And in many ways, what you see if what you get.

Located on the Atlantic Ocean coast of West Africa, Ivory Coast is bordered by Liberia to the west. To its east lies Ghana. Its southernmost reaches are covered by dense, humid rainforest. Here you’ll find the sun-glinting towers of downtown Abidjan and spectacular beach escapes.

Stretching inland towards the drier Sahel region, Ivory Coast is bordered by Guinea, Mali , and Burkina Faso. Here visitors will find villages largely untouched by the modern world. One, Yamoussoukro, even became the post-independence capital.

Introducing Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast fell firmly within the French sphere of influence during the nineteenth century European colonisation of Africa. Taking control of the area in the middle 1800s, France united the territories of several tribal groups, including the Dan, Baule and Senufo. The borders have remained largely the same ever since.

The official use of ‘Côte d’Ivoire’ rather than ‘Ivory Coast’ isn’t the only relic of this rule. English is rarely spoken on the streets, and the country maintains very close ties with France. Its position within the West Africa CFA Franc zone has helped create a stable currency. It is guaranteed by the French treasury, and pegged to the Euro.

Ivory Coast gained full independence from France in 1960. At this time, it was the richest nation in West Africa, which led to many French nationals staying. The result is a cosmopolitan population, particularly in the country’s south. The good times didn’t last, however. It would take until the beginning of the twenty-first century to return to its same level of prosperity.

This is partly due to the fact that the country was ruled by one man from 1960 until 1993. When Félix Houphouët-Boigy died, power struggles led to two short civil wars and various outbreaks of fighting. Largely a battle between poorer north and richer south, the latest episode was ended by a short intervention by UN forces.

But it was victory at the African Cup of Nations in 2015 that really helped heal the country. Team members of ‘the Elephants’ came from both north and south of the country.

On the ground in Ivory Coast

Although it’s no longer the capital, Abidjan is still by far the largest city. It is home to the main international airport, variously known as Port Bouët and Félix Houphouët-Boigy airport. One of West Africa’s better-organized cities, Abidjan has a fine lagoon-side setting a short distance from Atlantic beaches.

You’ll want to linger in Abidjan for at least a day, and if you’re a night owl, maybe more. The city has some lovely hotels , an excellent nightlife, and restaurants effortlessly exuding Parisian chic. Then there’s the galleries, important museums and cultural institutions, all hidden among skyscrapers and some of the region’s best shopping.

When it comes to beaches, San-Pedro and Sassandra are personal favourites, closest followed by Grand-Lahou. Each are to the west of Abidjan. To the east, you’ll find Grand Bassam, a sleepy resort town with a fading colonial grandeur that’s hard to resist.

Northern regions

If it’s the wildlife that’s drawn you to Ivory Coast, the country has nine national parks. Situated in primary forest close to the Liberian border, Parc National de Taï is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It protects species as diverse as pygmy hippos and tool-using chimpanzees.

At the country’s northern extreme lies Parc National de Comoé, forming the largest area of protected land in West Africa. A key savannah landscape, a full-gambit of plains species can be found here, albeit in smaller concentrations than elsewhere in Africa.

Roughly midway between Taï and Comoé is the capital, Yamoussoukro. It became capital as the home village of Félix Houphouët-Boigy. Where once only 500 inhabitants lived modernist architecture now rubs shoulders with the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. One of the largest places of Christian worship in the world, it rivals the Vatican’s St Peter’s Basilica in look and size.

Is Ivory Coast safe to travel to?

Despite its difficulties, Ivory Coast is stable and generally safe to travel to. You’ll experience very little bother from officialdom, perhaps due to the large population of French-born residents. Calls of ‘le blanc!’, or ‘white man!’ are thankfully rare.

Road travel is relatively simple – and comfortable – compared to its near neighbours. Traffic accidents remain a risk however. Unsurfaced roads can turn near unnavigable during the wet season, which lasts from April until October.

The steady flow of tourists from France means the country’s main destinations are well-equipped with hotels and tourist infrastructure. The country’s government has also made a concerted effort to appear more welcoming in the run up of the 2023 African Cup of Nations football tournament. Taking place in Ivory Coast for the second time, it’s (oddly) running from January to February 2024.

Updated to reflect safety and security information on the Northern Border Region, and additional points for mariners who decide to travel to Côte d’Ivoire.

Exercise increased caution due to  crime, terrorism , civil unrest , health , and  piracy.   Some areas have increased risk.  Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Country Summary:   Crime continues to be a major public security concern in Côte d’Ivoire. Violent crime, such as carjacking, robbery, and home invasion, is common in some areas.  Local police often lack resources to respond to serious crimes.

Violent extremist activity occurs in Burkina Faso and Mali near the border with Côte d’Ivoire.  Terrorism concerns in the northern region remain due to its proximity to these countries.

Travelers should avoid demonstrations, protests, political rallies, and large crowds.  These events can become violent.  Demonstrators and security forces may clash suddenly.  Police may use tear gas or other force to break up crowds.

Piracy with armed robbery and kidnapping for ransom are significant threats to ships operating near Côte d’Ivoire.  U.S. citizens on ships in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of West Africa should be cautious.  

Health care in rural areas is below U.S. standards.  There are often shortages of medicine and medical supplies in public and private health facilities.

The U.S. government is limited in its ability to provide emergency assistance to U.S. citizens outside Abidjan.  U.S. Embassy staff are not permitted to drive outside major cities at night.  Read the  country information page  for more information on travel to Côte d’Ivoire.

If you decide to travel to Côte d’Ivoire: 

• Check local media for breaking events and adjust your plans.
• Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
• Use caution when walking or driving at night.
• Keep a low profile.
• Be aware of your surroundings.
• Do not display signs of wealth, such as expensive watches or jewelry.
• Stay alert in locations frequented by foreign travelers and foreign residents.
• Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
• Carry a copy of your passport and visa (if applicable).  Leave originals in your hotel safe.
• Have evacuation plans that do not rely on U.S. government help.
• Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
• Get full medical insurance.  It should include medical evacuation.
• Mariners should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts, U.S. Coast Guard homeport website, and NGA broadcast warnings.  
• Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  You will get safety alerts by email/text and it will help us find you in an emergency.
• Follow the Department of State on  Facebook  and  Twitter .

• Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations.  Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .

Northern Border Region – Level 4: Do Not Travel

The main terrorist threat to Côte d’Ivoire is from a group called Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). JNIM is linked to al-Qa’ida. JNIM mostly operates in the Sahel region, including Burkina Faso and Mali.  The threat from JNIM has in the past reached northern Côte d’Ivoire, near the border with Burkina Faso.  Attacks have happened in the Savanes and Zanzan Districts, including Comoé National Park.  These attacks have mainly targeted Ivoirian security forces, but civilians have also been targeted.  In 2021, Al-Qa’ida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) carried out 17 small-scale attacks that killed approximately 20 people.  After these attacks, the Côte d’Ivoire government increased security in northern Côte d’Ivoire.  Since 2021, there have been no attacks.

Average temperatures in Abidjan vary very little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel hot all year with a fair chance of precipitation about half of the year. The area is less temperate than some — in the 12th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Abidjan, the hottest months are March, April, and then February. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally mid April where highs are regularly around 90.8°F (32.7°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 77.7°F (25.4°C) at night.

Abidjan has some extremely humid months, and high humidity throughout the year. The least humid month is January (76% relative humidity), and the most humid month is August (87.8%).

Wind in Abidjan is usually calm . The windiest month is October, followed by June and July. October’s average wind speed of around 6.5 knots (7.4 MPH or 12 KPH) is considered “a light breeze.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early April where average top sustained speeds reach 13.1 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Abidjan in July. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

June – August is the second busiest season for tourism in Abidjan, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly more.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 89.4°F (31.9°C) and 83.1°F (28.4°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 4 to 12 days per month. Tourism is the busiest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be higher priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is perfect this time of year in Abidjan to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 90.8°F (32.7°C) and 89.1°F (31.7°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 1 to 6 times per month. These times of year are fairly slow with tourists.

10. Les Cascades de Man

You should definitely take a refreshing dip in the pool at the base of Les Cascades de Man and swim down the moss spattered layers of rock. 15. Visit Taï National Park

The Taï National Park sits on over a 3000 sq. km area making it one of the largest protected areas of what remains of the upper Guinean rainforest; once the dominant wildlife habitat in the whole of West Africa, ranging from Gabon to Senegal. This extensive plush lands is divided by large river valleys, wet woods, monadnock mountains surrounded by the savanna. Wildlife here include the endangered pygmy hippopotamus, colobus monkeys, chimpanzees and duikers.

If you want to explore the rainforest and beach resorts of West Africa , a trip to Cote d’Ivoire is an ideal choice. Ivory Coast is a great destination for your next vacation. It is rich in culture, with its traditions, festivals, and events held throughout the year.

With several attractions and things to see, it is recommended to use car hire in Abidjan and explore this vibrant city on your own terms. Grand Bassam, also known as the “little Venice of the Caribbean” is the capital of the Grand area. This is located on the western coast of the country. Abidjan is an important urban center in Côte d’Ivoire, a country in West Africa. Yamoussoukro is home to the Grand Bassam beach, a stretch of white sand bordered by palm trees. It’s also home to a large number of hotels and restaurants. Nearby is the Banco National Park, which has a beautiful arboretum, walking paths, and fish ponds.

Grand-Bassam

Grand-Bassam is a coastal resort town near Abidjan that’s renowned for its palm-backed beach. This palm-backed resort town is located on the Atlantic coast and near the city of Abidjan. The town was once the country’s capital, and you can still see the old ruins in the center of town.

You can also visit the National Museum of Costume in the former governor’s palace, where you can view traditional dress.

You can find a great selection of souvenirs at the Grand Bassam market. The town is divided into two halves, Ancien Bassam is the old French part of town and has the most colonial attractions, while Nouveau Bassam is the modern business center. The town is small, so it’s easy to walk around and explore on foot. You can also hire a bush taxi to get further afield.

Comoé National Park

The Comoe National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll be able to see over 1,500 different species of plants and animals in the park. Its rich diversity of flora and fauna, diverse landscapes, and 230 km of a navigable river, make it a unique place to explore.

The park is home to the largest primary tropical rainforest in Africa. It has abundant wildlife and more than 280 species of birds. Birders will enjoy seeing resident species, such as guinea fowl, francolin, wood dove, and kingfisher. The park’s diverse terrain includes savannahs, grasslands, stretches of rainforest, and the long, fish-filled Comoé River. It is also home to chimpanzees and hundreds of species of birds.

The Comoe River runs through the northeast region of Cote D’Ivoire, and its natural beauty is unparalleled. You’ll find patches of rainforest and shrub savannah here, as well as chimpanzees, hippos, and dwarf crocodiles. Unfortunately, the park’s landscape is under threat due to increased settlement. As a result, it was inscribed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage in Danger in 2003.

The small city of Bouaké is a burgeoning tourist destination in Cote d’Ivoire. It is smaller than the other cities in the country but has lots of unique places and things to do. In fact, it is UNESCO-listed, making it one of the top places to visit in Côte d’Ivoire.

The town of Bouaké is home to several waterfalls. The most famous one is Cascades Falls. Another beautiful place to visit in Bouaké is the Tai National Park, which covers an area of about three thousand square kilometers. This is a former Upper Guinean rainforest and has a number of breathtaking waterfalls.

Travelers can easily reach Bouaké by plane. The city has an airport that is situated just north of the city. It also has a railway line connecting Abidjan and Ouagadougou, a town in Burkina Faso .

Assinie-Mafia

Located in the southeast of the Ivory Coast, Assinie-Mafia is a coastal resort town. It is a sub-prefecture of the Adiaké Department, which is in the Sud-Comoé Region and Comoé District. In the early twentieth century, Assinie was the third-largest city on the Ivory Coast.

It has since lost its strategic and commercial importance to other cities like Bingerville and Port-Bouet/Abidjan. Make no mistake though, the town is a huge tourist attraction.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic destination for couples or an adventurous getaway with the kids, Assinie-Mafia is a fantastic destination. Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve

The Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and protected area located in Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. The reserve covers an area of 17540 hectares, with 12,540 hectares in Guinea and 5,000 hectares in Côte d’Ivoire.

A visit to this national park will allow you to witness this rare species, as well as the other local species. The mountain reaches a height of 1,752 meters and is the source of the Nuon River.

The nature reserve is home to an extensive variety of plant and animal species. Its unique biogeographical background and geological location make it a unique area for biodiversity in West Africa. In addition, it is one of the few sites in the Gulf of Guinea with high endemism potential. The area supports more than 2,500 species of invertebrates and 317 species of vertebrates.

Mont Tonkoui

One of the best ways to see the country’s lush natural scenery is to hike up Mont Tonkoui, the country’s second highest mountain. While there aren’t any restaurants on-site, you should bring water and snacks to keep yourself hydrated.

The waterfall is located in a gorge and preserved forest. It’s accessible via a paved pathway and is surrounded by huge groves of bamboo. Young Manois love to swim in the waterfall, which reaches a height of 20 meters. You’ll also hear the soothing sound of birdsongs as the waterfall flows.

The Port of San-Pédro is Cote d’Ivoire’s second largest port, and one of the largest along the west African seaboard. In 2011, it handled 1.8 million MT of traffic, and in 2015 it handled almost 4 million MT. It has a multipurpose terminal, West Wharf 1, and an underground pipeline for palm oil.

Another major draw to San-Pédro is its pristine beaches. The town is located on the Gulf of Guinea and has more than 150 kilometers of beaches. Whether you are seeking a relaxing day by the beach, swimming, or simply relaxing, the beaches of San-Pédro have it all.

The best time to visit Ireland —to see green countrysides and impressive castles , to learn about Celtic history, to rub elbows with friendly and funny Irish folks—is any time of year. Whether you want to visit for the breathtaking beauty of Ireland’s rock formations or medieval architecture, or just to drink a whole lot of Guinness, the key to a good visit to Ireland is to time it just right.

It’s common knowledge these days that shoulder-season travel can offer the savvy traveller a lot of advantage no matter their destination. But to get an expert opinion on the ins and outs of it, I spoke to Siobhan Byrne, the Dublin-based founder and CEO of luxury travel company Adams & Butler , for her insight on the best time to visit Ireland. Read on to learn how to schedule your visit and what to know before you go:

It is best to visit Ireland in the shoulder season months of May, June, and September, when the weather remains pleasant but the crowds have not yet come or already gone.

The best time to visit Ireland are the months of May, June, and September , according to Byrne. These are the months that touch the peak season of summer, so the weather is warm but most of the crowds have yet to arrive or have already gone. That said, even the months of March, April, and October offer pleasant weather.

“I joke—but it's actually true—that, in Ireland, the winter is a cooler version of the summer, and the summer is a warmer version of the winter,” Byrne says. “On any given day in the year, it can be 17°C. I often do hand-washing on Christmas Day because it can be a wonderful dry sunny day!”

Byrne also notes that the travel time to Ireland from the East Coast of the US is just five and a half hours, so technically it takes less time to get to Dublin than to the West Coast : “So do consider Ireland for a long weekend break during those winter months, that's what people in the know do!

November is statistically the cheapest month to fly to Ireland , according to Laura Lindsay, the destination and travel trends expert at Skyscanner . “It’s one of the quieter months for tourists, with short days and colder weather without the twinkling lights and fairground feel of Christmas markets,” Lindsay says.

Heads up that December is the most expensive time to travel to Ireland, according to Skyscanner data.

Byrne suggests that travellers avoid visiting Ireland in July and August because this is also the time for peak domestic travel. As such, prices at hotels increase for the high season and there are more people traveling generally.

“Irish people love traveling in Ireland, and that’s when the school holidays happen, meaning these are the busiest periods,” Byrne says. “The hotels are jam packed, yet there is still only the same amount of staff to service all of these clients. You’ll still get that wonderful sunny Irish disposition, but you’ll be sharing it with more people.”

A first-time visit to Ireland warrants a minimum of 7 and ideally 10 nights so that the traveller can enjoy Dublin, Galway, and the countryside.

For a first-time visit to Ireland, Byrne recommends a minimum of 7 nights; ideally, 10. This should give you enough time to visit both the cities of Dublin and Galway without feeling rushed, and to spend some time in the countryside.

“If you want to really get to know Ireland I would suggest 12 to 14 nights, and include Northern Ireland as well,” Byrne says. “If you’re coming for a short break, do four nights. Base yourself in Dublin for it, or do two nights in Dublin and two in Galway—or in Wicklow, outside of Dublin, known as ‘the garden of Ireland.’ There, visit Powerscourt House and Gardens; and the absolutely majestic Glendalough lakes , which are surrounded by mountains, wild goats, and round towers.”

People tip for good service in Ireland, but Byrne says that if a service charge is already included in the bill, you don’t need to tip extra unless you really want to. “We don’t usually tip taxi drivers unless we love them. The same applies to getting drinks at a bar ,” she says. “However, if a young lady or gentleman is serving you at a table in a bar, it’s always nice to give them a euro or so to make them happy.”

That said, travellers should definitely tip drivers who do transfers (say, to the airport) or act as guides. Byrne recommends: “A tip for a transfer could be €10; and for driver-guides €100, on average for a full day. Walking guides would really appreciate €10.”

It might be a surprise to some travellers to learn that the food in Ireland is very good, much of it fresh farm-to-table. Byrne says, “The most common feedback we get from clients as they were blown away with the quality of the food.” She also touts the Irish sense of humour and the friendliness of people in Ireland—even that of strangers who travellers meet on the street.
