I can’t seem to stay away from Canterbury Castle in Lake Orion. Their themed events are so much fun. We came back for an Easter Egg Drop from a helicopter and so much more. Penniman Castle in Battle Creek

Penniman Castle, also sometimes referred to as Kingman Castle, in Battle Creek, built in 1906 to resemble a Medieval castle. The 3rd floor burned in 1941, leaving it to look how it does today. This home serves as a private residence and was recently on the market asking price of $160,000.

German Castle in Castle Park, Holland

Seeking a slower pace of life, Michael Schwartz decided to retire to Holland, Michigan in 1894 and moved his family to Castle Park. Legend has it, Schwartz’s daughter fell in love with a local Dutch boy and quickly eloped. Her irate, unapproving father locked her in the tower of the castle and forbid her from seeing her long lost love. Many people claim to see this young woman standing in the tower window to this day.

Adams Castle in Bloomfield Township

Harry Stormfeltz spared no expenses building this Adam’s Castle as his home in 1929 in Bloomfield Township, Michigan.

There’s a more colorful history to the story as well, when it served as a bachelor pad and more recently it’s purchase as a Mother’s Day gift.

Castle living is a childhood dream for many, and while it may not be realistic, visiting a castle to embellish the fantasy is something anyone can do in cities across Michigan – a treat for castle fanatics and history lovers alike.

Castle Farms

The impressive stone towers of a French Renaissance-inspired castle greet visitors to Castle Farms in Charlevoix. Built in 1918, the castle began as Loeb Farms, a model dairy farm with more than 200 head of Holstein-Friesian cattle, owned by Albert Loeb, the acting president of Sears, Roebuck, and Co.

Loeb’s vision for the farm included using only the latest and greatest farm equipment sold by Sears, including electric milk machines and automatic watering troughs, and proving it was the best by becoming successful in a location not suitable for dairy farming.

Thanks to his drive for excellence, Loeb’s dairy farm made the grade. It was once the largest employer in Charlevoix County and a popular gathering spot in the late teens and early 1920s. Visitors delighted in strolling the grounds, ogling the fancy farm machinery and buying ice cream, cheese and flowers on Sunday afternoons.

Loeb really hit the ball out of the park when he added semi-professional baseball games to the Sunday festivities. He formed a team called the Sodbusters (an informal name for farmer), built a diamond and bleachers, and even brought in the Chicago White Sox to play the Sodbusters in an exhibition game.

From farming to farm teams, Loeb played a meaningful role in the Charlevoix community, and his fondness for fieldstone, decorative turrets and Gothic arches is prominently displayed by the castle’s architecture.

Transitioning through the years from a farm to an artists’ retreat to a concert venue, Castle Farms has been methodically reborn through Linda Mueller’s personal passion for castles. Countless hours and expert craftsmanship recreated the castle, making it a historical site offering tours of the gardens and grounds. It also has four unique event spaces that are popular for weddings, reunions, fundraisers, business events and more.

Saunter through cobblestone courtyards and be wowed by the sprawling castle’s intricate stonework. Built with native fieldstone, colors ranging from grey to blue to tan to red speckle and sparkle on the castle’s interior and exterior walls. The stones are all different shapes and sizes creating textural treats for the eyes. 

The grounds captivate with a towering hedge maze, an enchanted forest with fairies, gnomes and a whimsical alphabet garden, ponds for feeding ducks and fish, and Michigan’s largest outdoor model railroad.

Stroll through more than 100 years of history with a visit to the castle’s World War I museum and rooms with private collections that feature models of castles, antique glassware and toys, decorative plates and even memorabilia from the concert era when Bon Jovi, Sting, AC/DC and many other famous musicians played there. Tour a French chateau style castle overlooking the Shiawassee River in Owosso, and you will be walking in the shoes of famous writer James Oliver Curwood as you step into his writing studio at Curwood Castle. The historic studio is now a museum with exhibits, including original paintings used to illustrate his novels.

A multi-colored slate roof with hues of red, blue, green and grey sits atop the vibrant yellow stucco exterior of the castle, which also has intricate fieldstone inlays and copper trim. The display of colors, patterns and textures on the castle and its towering turrets is an alluring sight to see.

Henderson Castle

Experience the life of a noble with a stay in this 11,000-square-foot, Queen-Ann style castle. Kalamazoo’s Henderson Castle, built in 1895 for businessman Frank Henderson, is now the Henderson Castle Inn, a bed and breakfast with a spa, chophouse, winery and architectural charm.

An eye-catching combination of Lake Superior sandstone and brick decorate the exterior walls and support the castle’s steep roof and stunning spires. Stained glass windows and lavish wood, including mahogany, bird’s eye maple and birch, adorn and add charm to the interior.

Travel Tip If young children are joining you on your castle cruise, bring prince and princess clothing for them to wear as they make their way through the royal settings.

There are six visible Petoskey stones mortared into the walls of Castle Farms. The stonemasons that built the castle artistically positioned more decorative stones where they could be seen. See if you can find them during your visit.

Amazing Castles in Michigan

When someone mentions Michigan, what’s the first thing that springs to mind? I’d wager most of my net worth that it’s not castles. Surprisingly, however, Michigan has a number of famous castles that are worth a visit. Still skeptical? Let’s clear a few things up.

What technically constitutes a castle?

According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary , a castle is a large fortified building or set of buildings. Most of the castles on this list will not stand up to that definition. Alas, that is not the only definition offered. The alternate is much more fitting for our list – a massive or imposing house. Sorry if I got your hopes up, but there are no medieval fortresses tucked away in the corners of the state overlooking one of the Great Lakes. 

What’s not included on this list?

Some of the more famous “castles” in Michigan aren’t buildings at all, they’re (extremely cool) geologic formations that don’t qualify for this list according to our agreed-upon definition. So, you won’t find anything in regards to Castle Rock or Miners Castle at Pictured Rocks (below). These are definitely places you’ll want to see, but they’re not technically a part of this list.

Now that we’ve gone ahead and defined our terms, let’s walk through the state’s castles to see if you can find one to visit near you on your next Michigan getaway.

Bavarian Inn’s Castle Shops

Attached to the legendary Bavarian Inn restaurant in Frankenmuth, the Castle Shops carries the look of a proper German castle. Before or after your delicious dinner you can swing through the Castle Shops to find a fine assortment of German wines and cheeses as well as an astonishing collection of souvenirs. At the very least, grab a photo on your next trip through Frankenmuth to stock up on Christmas supplies at Bronner’s .

Beaumont Tower

Michigan State has quite a few iconic pieces of architecture on their campus but few stick out like the Beaumont Tower. Completed in 1928, the tower was designed in a gothic style and was meant to be a monument to teaching and was the brainchild of a former student, John W. Beaumont, an 1882 graduate.

Castle Farms

Who doesn’t want to get married in a castle? When it comes to castles in Michigan for weddings, Castle Farms is hard to beat as far as wedding destinations go. Located in beautiful Charlevoix, this 103 year old castle hosts events of all types, including weddings, receptions, private parties, and festivals.

Castle Museum of Saginaw County History

Did you know that Saginaw had a significant French history? Few do. The Castle Museum was designed to honor the area’s French heritage and contains not only items of local interest, but statewide archaeological and historical exhibits.

Cook Law Quadrangle

Located on the University of Michigan campus, the Law Quadrangle consists of five buildings constructed in the Tudor gothic style. It took a decade to finish the buildings which were completed in 1933. Former student William Cook (graduate 1880, 1882) initially wanted to endow a professorship, but ultimately made donations that made the development of the Quadrangle possible.

Curwood Castle

You could be forgiven if you drove down M-52 in Owosso and drove right past Curwood Castle. It’s easy to miss if you don’t know where you’re looking, but this beautiful castle was a Norman Rockwell replica that you should take time to see. It was completed in 1923 and served as the studio of famed author James Oliver Curwood. These days the castle is one of the most visited tourist spots in Mid-Michigan and hosts a museum that is open to the general public.

Eighth Precinct Police Station

Designed by Loui Kamper for the now ridiculous price of $46,000, the Eighth Precinct police station came about as a necessity after the previous headquarters on Trumbull had been closed in 1901. The building was utilized by police in West Detroit for a variety of purposes over the years before recently being converted into loft housing as part of a revitalization project along Woodbridge.

Grand Army of the Republic Building

Constructed in 1942, this Detroit castle is constructed on an awkward triangular lot on the northwest side of Detroit. Initially, the building was meant to serve Grand Army of the Republic members, the building included offices and a bank. Over time the building was vacated and changed ownership on multiple occasions. In 1986 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Henderson Castle

If you’re looking for a castle in Michigan to stay at, look no further. The Henderson Castle in Kalamazoo is a luxurious bed and breakfast in one of the best parts of Kalamazoo. Located a short walk from the downtown nightlife, theaters, and shopping, you’ll also get a lovely view of downtown. During your stay expect some of the finest French cuisine you’ll find in the Midwest.

Meadow Brook Hall

Another Michigan castle that’s a popular wedding destination, Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester is a national historic landmark. Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of John Dodge, built the building between 1926 and 1929. The history, and the Tudor-styled architecture earned this historic home a spot on the list of National Historic Landmarks. Today you can take a historic tour, or host weddings and corporate events at the space.

Newberry Hall

Housing the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, this tiny castle is one of the most unique spots you’ll find on the University of Michigan campus. You can virtually check out some of the exhibits via their website .

The most famous building on Wayne State’s campus in downtown Detroit, this was originally built to be a high school. Ground broke on this historic beauty in 1894 and it was completed in 1896. These days it houses WSU’s College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts.

The Hoyt Library

Another Saginaw castle, this piece of Mid-Michigan history opened in 1891 after being designed by Eric Pinchet. The historic library is open to the public and houses extensive genealogical records of the surrounding area.

Upper Peninsula Brewing Company

It wouldn’t be a post on this site if we didn’t mention a Michigan brewery . The Upper Peninsula Brewing company, however, is the only one to make our list of castles! While small in stature compared to the rest of our list, the building also known as the Charles Meeske House serves up cold craft beers to thirsty customers in Marquette. Named after brewer Charles Meeske, the building was completed in 1893 and was originally built to serve as a slaughterhouse. It was eventually turned into a brewery and served as Meeske’s home and office during the time he ran the business.

Most people don’t know this, but Michigan has a few majestic castles, some of which are open to the public to view.

While the castles that have been built in Michigan don’t date back hundreds of years, many of them still have the appeal of castles constructed in the middle ages.

In addition, Michigan is home to the second-largest castle in the world, with 520 units inside the castle.

Mr. Henderson, however, did not occupy the home for very long as he passed away shortly after its construction.

The castle has changed hands nine times over the years and currently functions as a bed and breakfast.

It has been featured in several movies and on several history channels.

HENDERSON CASTLE 

a bit about the castle...

It was 1895  when the construction of a beautiful, enchanting castle was completed in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The story of this extraordinary home began with a local, Frank Henderson. At that time Mr. Henderson was one of Kalamazoo’s most successful businessmen as the owner and president of the Henderson-Ames Company, which made uniform regalia for secret societies, fraternal organizations, and the military. Mr. Henderson’s wife, Mary, had inherited a plot of undeveloped land on the western edge of Kalamazoo before the company’s tremendous success. For years, Mr. Henderson dreamt of building a grand suburb on the land.

In 1888, he began orchestrating his dream by engaging the services of several professionals from surveyors and engineers to landscape architects, all to plot the land and create Kalamazoo’s first “natural site plan”. Finally, in 1890, Mr. Henderson was ready to build his home in his new residential district. He commissioned C. A. Gombert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to design his dream home. The new structure was completed costing $72,000, which included seven baths (one with a thirteen-head shower), an elevator, and a third-floor ballroom. The castle’s exterior was constructed of Lake Superior sandstone and brick, and the interior wood included mahogany, bird’s eye maple, quartered oak, birch, and American sycamore. After the new castle was complete it boasted 25 rooms in all and exemplified the most expensive tastes of the time. In 1895, upon completion of the remarkable castle, the Henderson’s hosted a grand housewarming party and invited many prominent Kalamazoo citizens as guests. Unfortunately, Frank Henderson did not enjoy his castle for long, as he died in 1899. Mary Henderson remained at the castle until her passing in 1908.

After Mrs. Henderson passed on, nine parties have assumed ownership of the Henderson Castle, including its most recent owner, Master French Chef, Francois Moyet, who acquired the property in 2011. In 1957, the house was purchased as the future site for the Kalamazoo Art Center. However, when the Institute of Arts remained downtown Kalamazoo, the castle became the property of the renowned liberal arts school at Kalamazoo College which lies just a block to the north of the castle’s grounds.

The castle has a rich history and has become popular far beyond Michigan's boundaries. It has been featured in three movies, including “In the Woods”. It has also been featured on the Discovery Channel and House Hunters.

The Jewel of Kalamazoo (as it is referred to in Michigan), Henderson Castle is ranked the top historic inns in Michigan by AAA, the grandeur of this 11,000-square foot Queen-Ann style mansion, sitting on 3 acres, offers an intriguing blend of architectural, artistic, antique as well as modern amenities, including wireless access for business travelers. Heated marble floors, crystal chandeliers, gorgeous leaded and stained glass windows, fiber optic accents, a sauna, steam room, and rooftop hot tub make the Castle a haven in the city and a romantic dream come true. Today the Henderson Castle is owned and operated by Master Chef François Moyet. Chef Moyet acquired the Castle in 2011, and today operates it as a unique Bed & Breakfast. It is now home to a popular local restaurant, h ChopHouse, an organic garden, a vineyard, and a Day Spa. The Castle offers ten guest rooms, one of which is located in the Guest Cottage. Under Francois’ ownership, the Castle is now accessible to the community. The restaurant is open daily for dinner and throughout the week for, the Queen's Tea Service and Castle Tours. Dinner The Castle is the prime location for a vintage atmosphere, superb cuisine, and a lovely environment for couples on their wedding day. Henderson Castle hosts many events, allowing the community to enjoy this historic beauty that has been part of Kalamazoo for over a century.

François   Louis Moyet  and his twin brother, Jean Luc, were born on May 1, 1966, in Bourges, France. They also have a sister, Ann. Their parents François   and Yvette Moyet, schooled them on the principles of exceptional work ethic, honesty, and commitment to excellence. François Moyet began his culinary career at age 15. After three years of college, he graduated with a culinary technical degree. In December of 1984, he went into the army for a year, where he was assigned as a personal chef for the colonel and was also selected for an inter-regiment competition to follow a 3-month French commando training program. At this time, he received his master’s degree in French culinary art.

François moved to Paris in 1985 and had various opportunities to work in prestigious restaurants with “La tour d’argent” being one. During this time, in 1986, he was blessed with a son, Clavy Guilman-Moyet. While at “La tour d’argent,” François had the opportunity to feed some of the most celebrated people on the planet at the time, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, Ronald Reagan, and Fancois Miterand. The young chef became a consultant for major food industry organizations such as Danone bsn, Nestle, Picard, Alsace lait. He was selected for an international exchange program with Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island. It was there he met his wife, Catherine S. Holmes, director of the university. They have two daughters, Claire, b 1991 and Mathilde, b 1993.

François opened three successful restaurants in Paris, “Le Navarin” in 1990, at age 24, and two more “La Rotisserie du Navarin” and “Le Grillon” in 1992. In 1995, he immigrated to Kalamazoo with his family where he opened a couple of Kalamazoo restaurants, “ François ’ Seafood & Steakhouse” in 1995 and then “The Tortilla Flat” in 2003. After selling the restaurants, he earned his degree in naturopathic medicine.

When the opportunity to purchase Henderson Castle arose, Moyet decided to combine his unique skill sets to the benefit of the Castle. He developed Henderson Castle Boutique Inn and the Naturopathic Spa and Wellness Center. Both opened to the public on September 1, 2011. Moyet also intends to offer classes in herbs, organic gardening with vineyard and orchard, and natural methods of food preparation. He also provides a sous apprenticeship program.

François has expanded his boutique inn to include 10 rooms, all with a Victorian charm enhanced by modern amenities (including wireless connection). This unique site hosts tastefully countless other more personalized events such as bridal showers, high teas, anniversaries, and holiday events. Moyet has even opened Henderson Castle to the public for tours.

While the Castle has had a history of financial demands and stress, Chef-entrepreneur Moyet has turned that around and began to preserve the Castle by doing what he could to ensure those challenges were dismissed for good. As he has stated emphatically, “It is my goal, and my job, to find a sustainable recipe to ensure the Castle will never experience the troubles it has seen in previous decades. That is my intention and my passion.”

Moyet actually resides at the Castle. He is a true “Lord of the Manor.”

How to go inside Michigan Central despite no more Open House tours available

DETROIT - It’s the hottest free ticket in town. Tens of thousands of people have just begun touring the inside of one of Michigan’s most majestic buildings, Michigan Central , after the historic train depot opened this morning for the first time in more than three decades.

The opening comes following last night’s once-in-a-lifetime concert in front of 20,000 people on the grounds of the Station . Performers included Eminem, Jack White, Big Sean, Melissa Etheridge, Fantasia, Jelly Roll, the Clark Sisters and Common. The show was shown live on Peacock and can be seen, edited, on Sunday, June 9 at 7:00 p.m. on NBC.

Over the next 10 days, more than 60,000 people will tour the Station as part of the free Open House event. If you were not able to schedule a free tour, you can do so beginning on Friday, June 21. That’s when the Station will be open for self-guided tours from 5-9 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays through August 31. No tickets are required for these tours.

Michigan Central will also begin a phased reactivation of The Station over the next several months and years as restaurant, retail, and other commercial and community-focused partners take up residency. Expanded hours will be announced for fall, when the first phase of commercial activations opens to the public.

Michigan Central first opened back in 1913 and was once one of the grandest depots in the world, seeing thousands of people coming and going daily. It closed in 1988 where it lay abandoned until Ford purchased it in 2018. After a six year painstaking and meticulous restoration, the Station is now open to the public.
