Heels or flats? Dress shirt or t-shirt? Sun dress or jeans? White pants or… oh, you’re brave. If you’re going wine tasting, you might be a little unsure about what to do when it comes to dressing the part in Wine Country—especially when terms like “Wine Country Casual” and “Napa Valley Chic” come into play.

While there are seldom strict dress codes in Wine Country, we realize the topic of ‘wine tasting attire’ can be a bit confusing, so we’re sharing our best tips to ensure you look and feel good for your trip!

TIP 1: WEAR LAYERS

We put this tip first because it’s super important to bring layers for a day of wine tasting, even if the weather is supposed to be in the high 80s. Why? Because daily temperatures can fluctuate significantly in Wine Country, depending on how close to the coast you are or how high in the mountains. But also because some tastings and tours take place in cooler spaces like barrel rooms and caves, which are notoriously cold (around 55 degrees) to ensure the quality of the wine. When you are outdoors—particularly in the warmer months—it’s also smart to have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen on hand, and even a breathable, light sweater to keep you safe from the sun, since you can’t always count on shade from umbrellas.

TIP 2: CHOOSE WISELY BETWEEN HEELS OR FLATS

Some vineyards have parking lots, manicured walkways, and seated indoor tastings, in which case heels (or better yet, wedges) would work just fine. For the most part though, you can’t count on flat, level surfaces when wine tasting, as some wineries conduct tastings in grassy picnic areas, while standing at bar counters, or in basement level cellars (hello, stairs). Wearing comfortable shoes that can handle soft grass, wine stains, and uneven surfaces are key when wine tasting, as are closed toed shoes for those wineries that let you venture into the vineyards. If you’re on the fence, just slip a pair of flats into your purse as a back-up. There’s nothing worse than sore feet when you’re trying to enjoy yourself, so alternative options are always a good idea.

TIP 3: LADIES, FIND A MIDDLE GROUND

For the ladies out there who are worried about being over or underdressed, strike a balance! A blouse and blue jeans with wedges can look modern and effortless. A dress with a jean jacket and cowboy boots can look country chic. Use your style to express yourself, knowing that you’ll likely be indoors and out and in a variety of settings during a day of wine tasting. If you’re still a little unsure, try bringing a different pair or shoes, a scarf, or fancier earrings along with you. That way, you can dress up or down depending on how you feel once you reach your destination. Of course, if you plan to follow your wine tasting experience by going straight to a fancy Michelin-starred restaurant, you’ll want to wear something that can be dressed up.

TIP 4: WHAT ABOUT THE GUYS?

Golf attire and button down shirts are always safe options for men. Stylish, dark wash jeans are acceptable too, but making a little more effort will ensure that you’ll fit in wherever you go. As mentioned in Tip 2, closed toed shoes are always a better choice versus flip flops, but if all the wineries you plan to go to are super casual, kid- and dog-friendly places, then casual shoes are a fine choice. Just be sure to nix the cologne (we’ll elaborate on the latter).

TIP 5: LET THE WINE BE THE ONLY THING YOU SMELL

Smell, taste, sight. All of these senses go into a well-rounded wine tasting experience. This means you should factor in what you put on your body. Perfumes, colognes, and scented body lotion can interfere with the subtleties that make wine so divine. There’s nothing worse than trying to take in a wine’s delicate aromas only for it to be masked by the smell of a fellow taster’s strong cologne.

Grand Reserve at Meritage

TIP 6: THINK TWICE ABOUT THE LIPSTICK

Ask anyone in the wine hospitality industry and they’ll probably say that cleaning lipstick off wine glasses is a thorn in their side. Even industrial cleaners have a hard time removing lipstick from glasses. If lipstick is part of your signature look, maybe go easy on it while wine tasting, or find a tinted chapstick that won’t leave as much of a mark.

TIP 7: CHOOSE YOUR COLORS WISELY

Unless you’re only sipping white wine all day, spills are something you need to factor in. Wearing darker colors can help camouflage any mishaps. Even if you’re extra careful, the person next to you may overindulge and spill a glass, or the wine bottle may drip after the server pours a taste into your glass. These things happen, so plan accordingly… but if you really want to rock white or lighter colors, go for it! In the end it’s just clothing, and depending on your personality, it could be a fun challenge to see if you can make it the whole day without a red stain.

DECODING ‘WINE COUNTRY CASUAL’

There’s no standard definition for this rather vague term, but typically “Wine Country Casual” is somewhere between resort casual and business casual. For women, sundresses, blouses, and skirts all fall into this category, as do white jeans or nicer jeans with wedges. For the men, short-sleeved dress shirts, golf shirts, and khaki pants or nice jeans all work. A long-sleeved button down with dressier shorts and boat shoes are fine, too.

DEFINING ‘WINE COUNTRY CHIC’ AND ‘NAPA VALLEY CHIC’

Unsplash+

Many people who go wine tasting are on vacation, and the general tendency is to spruce things up a bit when it comes to dressing the part on vacation. After all, you’ll likely be taking lots of photos! “Napa Valley Chic” is simply “Wine Country Casual” on a fashionable vacation. Women will likely want to wear a dress or dress slacks with heels or nice flats, while men can opt for slacks and a jacket or sport coat (without a tie). Think sophisticated and elegant, not urban or flashy, and you’ll be fine.

Whereas jeans, flannel shirts, and other casual garments are suitable for wine regions in Texas, Washington, or Oregon. Tasting Room Attire

If you’re headed to a tasting room, you’ll want to make sure you’re comfortable for whatever wine tasting experience lies ahead. For tastings where you’ll be standing at the bar indulging in a flight of wines, skip heels, wedges, or any elevated shoes since you’ll be on your feet for an extended period of time. Large, bulky purses can also be left at home to avoid unnecessarily knocking over glasses of wine or bumping your fellow tasters. For elevated wine tasting experiences, you’re likely to be seated. Opt for one of the more elegant looks mentioned above and make sure your skirt length is befitting of a seated occasion. In general, you’re likely to receive better service, and perhaps a few extra special pours, if you dress up rather than dress down.

What to Wear to a Winery

Wine tasting always makes for a good time! When delicious wine, breathtaking views, fun people and perfect weather surround you, the last thing you want to worry about is your outfit. That is why I put together this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery. This style guide will not only answer what to wear wine tasting but also go over many style tips, outfit ideas, what to wear during different seasons and it’s full of outfit photos!

To start, let’s review some general winery outfit style tips. These are tips that apply to all of your wine tasting outfits no matter location or season! Keep these ten style tips handy when you’re packing for your wine region adventure.

1. Wear Comfortable Shoes: If you’re planning to sign up for a wine tour or have a long list of wineries you plan to visit, wear comfortable shoes. But comfortable doesn’t have to be sneakers. Instead of sneakers, wear flat sandals, wedges, loafers, or even some nice slides. Also take into consideration which wineries you will be visiting which means you might be walking in grass, dirt, gravel or cobblestone.

2. Go Hands-Free and Small with Your Purse: When you’re wine tasting, you will be walking around a lot, holding and reading brochures, tasting cheeses or chocolates, and of course, holding various wine glasses. So it’s best to wear a fuss-free bag. Also, if you carry a purse without a strap, you run the risk of leaving it behind or setting it down without keeping an eye on it. The best purse to wear to a winery is a small crossbody bag, like the super stylish Mini Marcie from Chloe , the classic Soho Disco bag from Gucci , or mini monogram crossbody from Saint Laurent.

3. Layer a Blazer or Cute Denim Jacket: If your winery outfit is looking a little simple, add a stylish layer. Depending on the season you could wear a denim jacket in the summer, a floral blazer in the spring, a long cardigan in the fall and a coat in the winter. Make sure this layer is not too bulky as you want to move freely no matter the season.

4. Go More Dressy Than Casual: Leave your leggings at home! Even though wineries are basically farms in the country, don’t think you can throw on jeans and a t-shirt and call it a day (unless of course you want to, but you wouldn’t be reading this post if you did). Opt for a little more dressy than casual. I still think that wine tasting is a pretty posh activity, so I try always to dress nice and classy. If you’re wondering how it is that you can dress classy read, How to Dress Classy – 7 Style Tips You Need to Know .

5. Low Maintenance Hair: Your wine tasting attire includes your hair so wear your hair up or style it in a way that doesn’t need maintenance throughout your wine tasting activities. If you’re planning on being out all day on the wine trail, I would suggest putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun. This way you won’t have to worry about it getting frizzy, going flat, and you won’t have to mess with it during your wine tasting tour. If I have some extra time in the morning, I’ll blowdry it, so it looks nice down.

6. Wear Chapstick: The main activity while wine tasting is drinking wine so instead of lipstick wear chapstick. You don’t want always to be checking your lipstick or re-applying when you get to the car. Keep it simple and wear chapstick.

7. Skip the Strong Perfume: You will be smelling a lot of wine trying to decipher what notes are most prominent, and you don’t want other smells interfering so skip the perfume! Not wearing perfume is also courtesy the group you’re wine tasting with and other guests in the wine tasting room or cave.

8. Wear a Pretty Print: If you need to bring some interest to your wine tasting outfit, swap a solid for a print. Instead of a solid blue dress, wear a dress with horizontal stripes like in my outfit example below. Wear a floral shirt in the spring, stripes in the summer, plaids & tartans in the fall and houndstooth in the winter.

9. Easy is Better: Don’t wear an outfit that is too high maintenance. What you wear to a winery needs to be comfortable and stylish, but remember point four, nothing too casual either.

10. Don’t Be Afraid to Wear White: There’s nothing wrong with wearing white to a winery. I have worn white jeans wine tasting, just see my outfit examples below. If you know you spill a lot, then I would suggest skipping the white.

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Different Seasons

When going on a vacation to Napa Valley, there are many choices to make. You need to consider where you’ll stay, which wineries you’ll visit, the time of year you’ll go, and what you’ll pack.

Packing the appropriate wine tasting attire is not necessarily tricky; you need to consider the locations you’ll be visiting and the time of year you’ll be going.

My favorite seasons to visit wine country is spring and fall because it’s not too hot or too cold. You don’t have to worry about sweating or getting sunburned. If you’re planning a trip to Napa Valley, I would suggest one of these to seasons. But let’s go over what you need to consider for each season and what to wear wine tasting in the spring, fall, summer, and winter.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Spring

The weather in Napa during the springtime ranges from the high 60s to low 70s during the day and mid to upper 40s in the morning and evening.

Napa Valley in May is chilly in the mornings and evenings, but the daytime temperature is perfect. Perfect to me is the 70’s, so if you like it a little warmer during the day, I would recommend waiting until last spring or early summer to visit Napa Valley.

In the spring pack more sweaters than you expect. Keep the sweaters handy in your car if you don’t plan on going back to the hotel before going to dinner. It’s also useful to keep them in the car when the tasting room is too cold or if you want to enjoy a glass of wine outside in the winery patio and it’s too breezy.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer

Summer in Napa Valley is pretty warm and sunny but this is what draws so many people from around California and beyond because it’s so beautiful! The temperature in the summer ranges from 80s–90s during the day and can cool down to the mid-50s at night.

In the summer opt for light colors, pretty prints, in light fabrics. Instead of jeans, wear skirts, shorts, and dresses.

If you do want to wear pants wear chinos instead of jeans. Chinos are very comfortable because it’s not very thick and not too tight. These two things would make this wine tasting trip very uncomfortable.

what to wear to a vineyard in Napa Valley during the spring

What to Wear to a Winery in the Fall

September is my favorite time of the year to go wine tasting because the mornings and evenings are crisp, but not too cold, and the temperatures during the day range from the 80s–90s. It’s the end of summer but not entirely fall. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on a winery patio or deck and take in the gorgeous views.

But fall is also one of the busiest times to visit Napa Valley because it’s harvest time. Harvest in the wine regions means the grapes are getting picked from the vines and many wine enthusiasts travel from all around to enjoy harvest events and special activities. Make sure to plan accordingly.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Winter

The most significant difference before spring or fall and winter, in addition to the temperature, is the crowds. If you’ve visited Napa Valley in the busy months, you know what I’m referring to regarding the masses. The tasting room at wineries is ten people deep, and you have to make your way to the counter. In the winter Napa has an entirely different feel, it’s peaceful, quiet and you have some places all to yourself.

In terms of weather, it gets pretty chilly in the evenings. Temperatures go down into the high 30’s in the evenings and during the day are in the mid to upper 50’s. I would pack plenty of layers because it can get warm in wineries.

If you’re planning on going wine tasting in the winter here are a few things to consider.

Just like any other time of year, wear comfortable footwear. You’ll be walking and on your feet, a lot so wear flat shoes or shoes with a thick stacked heel. This type of shoe is best for days filled with wine tasting and tours.

Make sure to bring a comfortable and warm sweater. If you decide to wear a thinner sweater, then layer on a coat. But if you don’t want to lug around a large jacket wear a very warm sweater instead. In the outfit example below I wore a thick olive green turtleneck sweater. I love the oversized collar and distinct fabric patterns; it brings texture and dimensions to an otherwise simple outfit.

With the large sweater and high black boots, I wore light colored skinny jeans. Remember; the balance is critical. (Read How to Look Stylish Every day – Your 5 Step Checklist to learn more about creating a balanced outfit). The boots are thick and heavy so to balance the boots I wore jeans on the lighter side instead of charcoal or black. I also wanted the shoes to stand out, and if I had worn black jeans, you wouldn’t have even noticed the boots.

It’s best to wear thinner skinny jeans with high boots such as the ones I’m wearing because you want the boots to fit snugly around your calves. The last thing you want is your jeans bunching up around your ankles.

You might have noticed a theme in the notes I mentioned. Comfort is key. You can be stylish and comfortable; you don’t have to sacrifice one or the other.

Wine tasting outfits.

There are a variety of stylish wine tasting outfits you can wear to wine destinations such as Napa. The variation exists because of activities, weather, and destination. The two critical details that you need to make sure these outfits are stylish and comfortable.

If you’ve been wine tasting, you know that there is a lot of standing, walking, and more standing involved. You need to wear an outfit that is comfortable with these various activities.

When putting together an outfit find a middle ground. An outfit that is not too dressy but not too casual either. You’ll need to wear a wine tasting outfit that you can wear all day and smoothly transition into evening dinner if you don’t plan on going back to your hotel to change.

Neutral Wine Tasting Outfit

The first wine tasting outfit is a blend of neutrals and one gorgeous printed top. The halter top is the main piece in this look, and the olive green cargos and wedges are the shirts supporting items. The cargo pants downplay the fancy, and the wedges keep the pants looking classy. With the natural color palette, this outfit is in its perfect setting.

The blouse has a pretty nature pattern which added the right amount of interest without it being an overpowering single piece. This outfit has a delicate balance of stylish but casual which I was able to achieve with the color and fabric choices.

A neutral outfit to wear wine tasting goes perfectly with this wine country activity since it’s such a relaxing atmosphere and the landscape of most wineries are earth-toned. This outfit will also work with flats or sandals if wedges are not your favorite thing to wear wine tasting.

If you’re wondering what to wear wine tasting remember: month, location and landscape. Put together a stylish and comfortable look and bring an extra pair of shoes just in case.

Shop nEUTRAL COLOR LOOK

Stylish wine tasting outfit.

For a stylish approach consider a striped shirtdress. In this outfit, I went with a look that was more “dressy” but still had the feel of a casual weekend look. The relaxed fit of the dress and the strips make this dress wine tasting appropriate. I know wearing heels while wine tasting is taboo, but I couldn’t help but wear those gorgeous laser cut heels. The two paired perfectly together.

I know what some of you might be thinking, “you’ll spill red wine on the white,” but take it from someone that spills a lot, you can wear white wine tasting as I mentioned in the ten style tips at the start of this post.

This shirtdress is both stylish and comfortable. All you need is a few accessories and a cute pair of shoes.

Blue and white striped shirtdress - Visit Stylishlyme.com for more outfit inspiration and style tips

Monochrome Wine Tasting Outfit

When a lot of walking is involved consider a cute pair of sandals. Remember I said cute pair of sandals, not flip flops. Keep it stylish even though you’re toning it down. With these casual wine tasting outfits make sure you have a focus point and something that still keeps the outfit classy.

In this third outfit, the sandals were the contrasting pop of color to the blue monochrome outfit . When wearing pants and a blouse of very similar color make sure the pieces are made from different fabrics. This top is a different material and hue of blue from the pants. The shiny silk looks excellent against the muted blue chinos. The blue structured patent handbag gives this casual wine tasting outfit structure, and again it’s a different material and color from the other two blues in this outfit.

Remember when you want to wear the same colors in one outfit, select different materials with a slight change in color, that can also mean shiny. In this outfit, the pants are muted, the silk top has a sheen to it, and the handbag is shiny.

Cute Wine Tasting Attire

The last outfit is something that would work for wine tasting locations where walking on dirt would be minimal. Overall it’s a cute and casual look, and the patterned pants added some individuality, and the heels dressed it up a bit.

Since the pants are very busy, I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit neutral. I paired these patterned pants with a blouse that matches one of the colors from the pattern.

With this chiffon blouse and a basic tee in the same color, I layered the light chiffon blouse over the shirt and created an airy, pretty layered look. The pop of color in this look was the handbag and the orange heels. These colors work well together because they’re all in the warm color family. The browns and oranges with a splash of red are appealing to the eye and come together nicely.

Planning Your Trip to Napa Valley

Wine tasting in Napa is a unique experience in my list of favorite places to visit. Napa brings together so many beautiful things that I love, from good food and wine to gorgeous landscapes and a relaxing environment to disconnect from the day-to-day.

With more than 400 wineries (600+ if you count Sonoma) you are sure to find a wine that you’ll love while wine tasting in Napa. If you are limited in time, at most you’d be able to visit 15 wineries during a weekend, well maybe you could do more, but I wouldn’t advise it because you’ll get too tired or too drunk.

My advice is to do some research ahead of time and make a list of the wineries you want to visit. There are popular locations like Sterling Vineyards, Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyard, and Castello di Amorosa. But there are smaller gems where you can maybe find the best Merlot you’ve ever had. If this is your first time visiting this wine region make sure to read my guide on The Best Napa Valley Wineries for First-Time Visitors

The style of trip you wish to experience should help determine the tasting rooms you visit. If you want an intimate visit where you get to talk to the winemakers and learn insights into what makes their wine special than I would look for smaller tasting rooms.

If you’re looking to see castles, take a ride at Sterlings ariel tram and see where the most famous wines from Napa come from then I would organize a route for the larger vineyards.

Peter and I have visited the famous wineries and the smaller ones during our wine tasting trips in Napa. This September we made an effort to visit smaller vineyards with cozier atmospheres, but we deviate by visiting Beringer Vineyards to have a tasting of there reserve wine and of course a cheese plate.

We tend to plan, but if you’re wine tasting without any specific plan that works too. You can start driving and stop at the first place that looks appealing.

I hope you now know what to wear to a winery and these style tips help you put together cute wine tasting outfits.

What To Wear To A Winery 101

There’s nothing quite like the hills of Tuscany, the Napa valley, or the lakeside of the Okanagan, along with other beautiful places referred to as “wine country” . If you are planning a trip to any of these destinations (or others), you are in for a big treat.

When visiting wineries you might want to tour the vineyards and learn about wine making, enjoy a wine tasting, or a delicious meal on the terrace. Whatever your plans, you’ll definitely want to make sure you are wearing the right winery outfit.

Things To Consider

When you are deciding on winery outfits, you’ll will want to consider a few important factors;

  • the season/weather – will it be hot, warm, cool, or rainy?
  • the type of winery – is it casual or more upscale?
  • the occasion – are you just visiting, or are you attending an event like a winery wedding?

For instance, if you are going to a winery in the summer you’ll want to wear lightweight breathable clothing that is stylish and flattering. If visiting a small boutique winery, you can wear a more casual outfit. On the other hand, if you are going to a high-end, upscale winery you’ll want to dress up for the occasion.

In the fall and winter it might be too cold for a dress, so you can opt for pants, ankle boots, and a nice sweater instead (see wear to a winery in the fall ) !

Read on to get chic winery outfits, learn what to wear wine tasting, and see some wine tasing outfits too!

Chic Winery Outfits To Copy

In the spring and the summer, we recommend going with light, airy clothing options that are minimal, chic, and comfortable. Unless you are going to a casual, small family-owned winery, you’ll find the overall vibe is often more upscale and people will dress slightly more formal. Here are some of our favorite winery outfits for 2024!

strapless top, trousers + sandals

get the look:

This winery outfit is chic, minimal, and has a refined feel. It’s perfect for wandering through the vineyards (flat shoes are the best choice if you’ll be “off-roading”), and sitting down for a post-wine-tour lunch.

Bring along a basket bag for your essentials, and extra room to pack a couple bottles of wine home with you!

feminine midi dress.

A pretty midi dress is the perfect balance between casual and dressy. Therefore, it can be the perfect wine tasting outfit and be comfortable enough for a tour around the vineyard.

Style a midi dress with a pair of comfortable flat sandals for a casual winery trip. Or, dress it up with heeled sandals and a designer crossbody bag (hands free!) for a top-rated winery visit.

Go for classic black, or opt for a floral midi dress if you prefer a splash of color.

flowy maxi dress.

One of our favorite winery outfits is a pretty maxi dress. If you are headed to a luxury winery or a wedding at a winery in the summer, a maxi dress is the perfect go-to. It is light and airy enough for hot weather, but is formal and chic for a fancy occasion.

Go with a nice pair of comfortable heeled sandals (or ankle boots in the fall) and dainty accessories to elevate the look. Remember, less is more. Let the maxi dress be the statement piece and keep everything else to a minimum.

pleated shorts + tank top

When the weather is really warm and you plan to do everything from a wine tour, to tasting, to lunch, shorts and a blouse or tank top is a great combo. If you choose a pair of nice tailored shorts, such as paperbag shorts or linen shorts, you can dress up the outfit and still be appropriately dressed for an upscale winery.

Throw on a pair of comfortable heeled sandals, flat mules, or flat sandals, and bring along a brimmed woven hat for extra sun protection.

Midi skirt + tank top.

A midi skirt and a minimal tank top can look very classy and elevated for a casual day exploring wineries or a tasting at an upscale estate.

You can opt for a breezy linen skirt with a simple tank top for something lightweight and casual. On the other hand, you can go dressier with a silk midi slip skirt and camisole for a wine tasting followed by dinner.

casual winery outfit with denim

image of a woman standing on a sidewalk in front of flower bushes wearing a white blouse, blue jeans, and a woven hat

Visiting a casual family-run winery, or a farm winery calls for a more casual outfit. Don’t be afraid to pair jeans with a cute top, and comfortable slides.

We love this California-chic look that would be great for exploring the smaller wineries in Napa Valley!

co-ord set.

woman wearing a butter yellow silk pant set at a winery

Butter yellow is the color of the season , so why not wear it to a winery in the form of a silky set like the one on Hannah above ? If yellow isn’t your color, you can easily go with a subtle neutral co-ord set or one in a simple print.

Either way, this classy combo is sure to look chic at your next spring or summer winery visit.

Stylish Wine Tasting Outfits

When taking in a wine tasting, you’ll want to dress smart and comfortably. Many wineries have an upscale atmosphere so err on the side of caution and go with more tailored and polished pieces.

Take a look at our fave wine tasting outfits below!

blouse + palazzo pants

woman wearing a colorful blouse with wide leg palazzo pants holding a glass of wine

This look is elegant and fresh, making it perfect for a winery visit in the spring or summer. The heeled sandals and flowy pants make the outfit dressy enough for lunch or dinner at an estate winery.

But, the pants ensemble is also casual enough for a relaxed wine tour at a boutique winery.  Not to mention, palazzo pants are very versatile and work for all kinds of occasions.

full skirt + tank top.

woman wearing a black tank top, tan belt, and full white cotton maxi skirt with brown sandals

This stunning winery-appropriate outfit has old money vibes, and we love it!

Pair a full skirt (a big summer 2024 trend ) , with a basic ribbed tank top and brown slide sandals. Add a lightweight knit tied around your shoulders and you’ll be ready for an estate winery tasting (just be careful when sipping the red wine with the white skirt!) .

ribbed sweater dress.

image of a woman wearing a brown sweater dress and sunglasses

For a wine tasting on a cooler day or evening, try a ribbed sweater dress. Pair the dress with kitten heel sandals, or try ankle boots. Add a leather or suede jacket for an extra layer in the early spring or fall.

When it comes to wine tasting outfits, we love a sweater dress with a wrap style or a body con style, as they are both chic and flattering!

elevated in jeans.

woman wearing a cream vest over a knit t-shirt with jeans, and white ankle boots at a wine tasting

For a casual trip to the winery, try a wine tasting outfit with jeans, and elevate the look with ankle boots and a nice knit top. We love this casual-chic outfit that would be perfect for a wine tasting in the fall.

Make this outfit work for spring or summer by losing the vest and swapping the boots for simple heeled sandals.

country girl.

Mosey up to the wine tasting bar in this cute puff-sleeve white mini dress and a pair of cowboy boots. The cowgirl-vibe is a big trend and works perfectly for a summer trip to a casual winery.

What To Wear To a Winery Wedding

A wedding at a winery is a perfect opportunity to get all dolled up. As a matter of fact, most wineries that host weddings are on the luxury side of the spectrum and have a beautiful estate to explore.

Below are some great winery outfit ideas for a stunning vineyard wedding:

satin slip dress.

Next on the list of wedding winery outfits, a satin slip dress is classy, chic, and definitely sexy. Simply put, paired with simple heels, and touches of  jewelry, this is a perfect outfit to wear to an upscale estate winery wedding.

Opt for black for a classic look, or add a little splash of color with it and go with a pretty pastel hue like the dress on Julia above.

little black dress.

You can truly never go wrong with a little black dress, and a winery outfit is no exception . Especially if you are attending a winery wedding. A classic black midi dress in a linen, satin, or knit fabric can be a perfect go-to for a wedding that at an estate winery.

Pair it with some neutral sandal heels and dainty accessories and you’ll be good to go!

What Not To Wear To A Winery

Now that we’ve given you a full range of outfit ideas and what to wear, let’s quickly cover what not to wear to a winery, whether its a small laid-back farm winery or a fancy estate winery.

  • Flip flops. Not only are flip flops overly casual, they are also not very sturdy and don’t make the best walking shoe if you are heading on a wine tour.
  • Sneakers.  In general sneakers are a bit too casual for a winery. Although some people will still wear them, we suggest leaving them at home and going with a dressier shoe option.
  • Pumps with pointy heels. As mentioned earlier, pumps with pointed heels can easily get stuck in the grass or ground when walking around the vineyard. Choose shoes with a block heel or wedge heel instead.
  • Athletic wear. This includes leggings, joggers, sweatpants, hoodies, and other items you’d wear to work out or lounge in. They are too casual and you’ll stick out like a sore thumb at the winery wearing this style of clothing.
  • Optional: A handheld bag/purse.  When it comes to a bag or purse you’ll want something with a long strap to wear over your shoulder or as a crossbody. In short, you’ll be holding a wine glass for much of the time, going with something hands-free is ideal!

Winery Outfit FAQ’s

Below are a couple of commonly asked questions about winery attire to help you along your way!

What shoes do you wear to a winery?

When visiting a winery you can wear sandals , mules , loafers , ballet flats , boots , and certain types of heels . But, you’ll want to consider a few things when deciding on the right pair.

  • If you are going on a wine tour through the vineyards you will want to make sure you have flat or block-heeled footwear. A void high, pointy heels as they can get stuck in the ground as you walk.
  • Wine tours tend to be quite long, and you’ll be standing most of the time, so prioritize comfort!

Additionally, we recommend you avoid sneakers and flip flops as they are both often too casual for a winery setting.

woman at a winery wearing a tan fedora, black dress, and black cowboy boots

Is it okay to wear jeans to a winery?

It depends! You can easily wear jeans to a casual winery, especially a farm winery that grows crops alongside grapes. Many wineries are very laid-back and do not have a dress code. So it’s not unusual to see the owners wearing overalls or work-wear as they are in and out of the fields.

On the other hand, estate wineries, or those with an upscale or high-end atmosphere, may have a dress code that doesn’t allow jeans. Therefore, it’s best to check if there is a dress code ahead of time to be on the safe side.

If you are really set on wearing jeans to a fancier winery, go for a dark wash or black jeans without any rips , as they have a dressier look than light wash or distressed jeans.

We hope you have enjoyed this very thorough post on what to wear to a winery! No matter what time of year you are planning, where you will go (there’s even great wineries in Ohio !) , or what kind of winery you’ll tour, you can be confident with winery outfit ideas and wine tasting outfits that are classy, elevated, and chic.

What to Wear Wine Tasting – The Ultimate Guide

What To Wear Wine Tasting | Best WIne Tasting Outfits & Attire | Winetraveler.com

You may be wondering what to wear on your next wine tasting adventure. When planning your wine tasting outfit (especially if you’re packing a suitcase for out of town tastings) there are a number of factors to consider — it’s not just a simple day out sampling wine! You may be photographed and you should be prepared for various weather conditions. Everything from your purse to perfume makes a difference. Here’s your go-to guide for what to wear to have the perfect tasting experience .

What To Wear To a Winery…

Wine cellars and caves are typically kept cold, meaning even on the sunniest summer days, you may feel chilly. Likewise, if you’re sampling reds, tasting outdoors or strolling through vineyards, it may be hot. It could cool back down again as the sun sets. Consider layering your attire. Dressing in layers means you have the opportunity to put on or take off a scarf, coat or sweater and you’ll feel comfortable, no matter what the thermometer says.

Scarves, hats and sunglasses

Don’t forget a scarf or pashmina, which can double as a shawl or headband or be easily folded into your purse. Hats and sunglasses can also save the day (and prevent a sunburn) if you know you’ll be tasting outside.

Comfortable shoes

Wine tasting is not the right time to sport your sassiest new stilettos. No matter how chic the event, a dressy pair of flat boots, sandals, flats or at most, wedges, is a better plan. You may be on your feet for hours or going up and down stairs. Part of the tasting may involve tours or walks through grass, gardens or vineyards. Heels will put a damper on your experience, so it’s better to select something cute, but sensible.

Dressy but casual

If this seems contradicting, it’s not. It’s likely you may be snapping photos, especially if you’ve come as a couple or group, so you want to look put together, but not over the top. If your wine tasting is during the day, denim is always a great choice for a wine tasting outfit. Black is perfect for evening looks. A little bit of jewelry goes a long way. Putting a little effort and thought (ahem, guys, this one’s also for you) will ensure that later when you scroll through your photos, you’ll like what you see.

Strong fragrances.

Part of the wine tasting experience includes savoring and classifying the wine’s aroma. If you’ve loaded up on Chanel No. 5, you won’t be able to grasp the smell of the variety, and you may also impact the experience of others around you. Guys, this also goes for you — take it easy on that AXE Body Spray, please.

What Not To Wear Wine Tasting | Winetraveler.com

This one should be obvious, but wearing white is simply asking for disaster. One false move (from you or your neighbor) could ruin an outfit and quite possibly your whole day. Instead, wear dark colors — if you spill, no one will know.

Heavy purses and backpacks

Pack light. You won’t need much wine tasting — and lugging a heavy bag around will (literally) weigh on you, especially if you’re standing for hours. Don’t bring clutches that don’t have a strap. Remember, you’ll need to hold a glass of wine, so having your hands free is ideal. Instead, wear a lightweight, crossbody or sidestrap bags for a more comfortable experience.

Wine Credit Card for Wine Lovers | Winetraveler.com

Ladies, don’t bother. You’ll just leave obvious red marks on your wine glass and after a few sips, it will rub off anyway! If you want to glam up, try wearing some cute eyeshadow or extra mascara instead.

Excessive bracelets

Using your hand to lift your glass to your mouth is pretty much how wine tasting works, so if you have a bunch of jangling, metal bracelets, this will be loud and annoying for you and everyone around you. So don’t be that person, and go light on the bracelets.

What Should Men Wear To a Wine Tasting? | Winetraveler.com

For the men:

Guys, you can follow some of the above tips, but I’m going to make it nice and easy for you with your own special section:

Wear dark colors and avoid white

Bring a hat or sunglasses for outdoor tastings

Go easy on the cologne

Bring layers in case it’s cold

Final wine tasting tips:

Wine cellars can often be dry, so if you wear contacts and have sensitive eyes, bring along re-wetting drops or a tiny bottle of saline, or better yet, wear glasses.

Don’t forget sunblock or mosquito repellent if you know you’ll be tasting outside.

I hope everyone reads this…the number of times I’ve been tasting next to someone that has marinated in perfume/cologne is surprising to say the least!

It’s amazing how quickly that can ruin a tasting experience!

Brilliant! Perfect advice for anyone heading out tasting! Some of these things will only affect the person wearing it and their comfort, ie shoes, layers…but some things like fragrances can ruin a tasting for others in the room! I like Allison have dealt with those type of tastings, where suddenly you can’t smell the wine over the perfume. I must admit that I typically where hiking boots, so I can walk vineyards if I want, but…if the occasion calls for something dressier, I have a pair of flat boots that can be dressy and practical! This is all really great advice!

Actually, Robin, hiking boots can be a great idea if you aren’t keen on taking lots of photos and plan to walk around a lot. Good tip! I’m glad you found the tips useful, and I wish wineries would consider hanging up “no perfume allowed” signs haha.

This is brilliant! Some really great tips here and yes I always wear dark colours and red lipstick also helps if I’m trying a few red wines 😉

Casey, I didn’t actually think of the opposite argument for wearing dark lipstick — covering up red wine lips! Great tip 🙂

In the spring and summer, you can style a gorgeous floral midi or maxi dress with comfortable heeled sandals and a classy crossbody bag for a timeless, casual look. For fall and winter attire, a sweater dress with ankle or knee-high boots can be a classic choice while leggings and a long-sleeve top with a cozy knit poncho might offer the perfect vibe.

For style inspiration, check out this ultimate guide on what to wear to a winery for a stylish and charming vibe. From summer to winter, these stunning wine tasting outfits will have you looking cute and classy on your tour.

Winery Outfits

What To Wear To A Winery

When it comes to the dress code, what you should wear to a winery will depend on the venue you visit, the season, the weather and the occasion. Wine tasting attire is generally casual and chic clothing that looks stylish and feels comfortable for a dressy outfit. If you plan to go on a wine tour, you’ll want to pair your outfit with comfortable shoes such as heeled sandals, flats, boots, loafers or designer sneakers.

Stylish Winery Attire

Upscale wineries typically ask for slightly formal attire that’s suitable for elegant tasting rooms, while casual locations have few rules and regulations in place for visitors. If you’re visiting for an anniversary or special occasion, you might want to dress up and wear a stunning dress with classy low heels that will help you look stunning on the tour and during the wine tasting.

Cute Winery Outfits

When visiting a winery in the summer, you can style tailored dress pants, a loose blouse and strappy sandals for a modern bohemian look. Since wineries in Napa and Sonoma can get chilly, you’ll want to also pack a light cardigan, jacket or coat for extra warmth and comfort.

Beautiful Winery Attire

While some wineries may have a dress code, most venues do not require heels as a standard. For a classy smart casual outfit, you can wear adorable kitten heels or platforms to lift your look without sacrificing comfort. Alternatively, a cute pair of ankle boots with a tank top and a fit and flare skirt is perfectly retro without looking overly casual.

Casual Wine Tasting Attire

Most wineries will seat you for tastings, but you’ll still be spending several hours on your feet while tackling gravel and cobbles. For this reason, loafers, block heels, gladiators and ballerina pumps are all excellent picks for when you need to prioritize comfort.

Some popular ideas for winery attire include:

  • A midi, maxi or sweater dress
  • Tailored pants, cute skirts, shorts and jeans
  • Jumpsuits, rompers and leggings
  • A chic blouse, linen top, button-down shirt, tank top and turtleneck sweater
  • Comfortable shoes like heeled sandals, flats, boots, wedges, loafers or stylish sneakers
  • Minimal jewelry and easy-to-carry purse

Chic Winery Outfit

Spring and Summer Winery Outfits

Spring and summer winery outfits should feature lightweight materials for an effortlessly cool and comfortable style. Although elegant white outfits look stunning, you’ll want to wear loose-fitting pieces in darker jewel tones that may hide clumsy spills and allow you to enjoy cheese plates without issues. For risk-taking fashionistas, bold prints are beautiful if you want to capture a contrasting shot against the vines.

Comfortable Summer Winery Outfits

When it comes to appropriate styles, maxi and midi dresses are always solid picks that are airy and casual without looking overly urban. For a Grecian feel that’s slightly edgy, a ruffle detail sundress or a side-slit max pairs beautifully with sandals or ankle boots for bold contrast.

Stylish Spring Winery Outfit

If you’re worried about gusts of wind, tailored or paperbag shorts are trendy options that flatter most figures. For something posh, cigarette pants with a floral blouse or a slouchy knit top are simply gorgeous. If in doubt, a classy jumpsuit is a reliable all-in-one option that’s suitable for small family-owned wineries and upscale locations.

Summer Dress Winery Outfit

To finish your outfit, throw on a pair of classic hoops and a trendy wide-brim hat to protect your skin. If you’re battling fluctuating springtime temperatures or powerful air conditioning, a light denim jacket or soft knit sweater can be a useful layer.

Edgy Summer Winery Outfits

Fall and Winter Winery Outfits

Fall and winter winery outfits can feature stylish pieces like sweater dresses, pants and knitwear for a cute and stunning style that will have all eyes on you. When styling a cute wine tasting outfit, you’ll want to wear layers to create a comfortable and warm ensemble.

Winter Winery Outfit

A trusty wool coat with a tie-waist is a wonderful way to showcase your figure while keeping warm, but you can throw on an oversized pea coat, knitted sweater and charming beanie for a youthful and refreshing vibe. If you’re visiting an upscale winery, a figure-flattering sweater dress, tall boots and sleek tights will make you the queen of any tasting room.

Fall Winery Outfit

If you’re not a fan of dresses, long pants made from thick and insulating materials are classy and timeless picks that pair well with most tops. You can choose a long-sleeve blouse in a muted color for a feminine feel, but it’s worth layering a thermal top underneath to keep yourself toasty while you’re outside.

Chic Fall Winery Outfit

For the ultimate femme-fatale appearance, a matching monochromatic knitted skirt, top and coat is a striking choice that never fails to look chic and glamorous. To pull things together, throw on a lightly patterned designer scarf for a touch of contrast.

Stylish Fall Winery Outfit

To finish your look, pair your stunning winter or fall outfit with a leather crossbody bag to keep your hands free for unlimited pours. To protect your eyes from the glaring sun and add flair to your look, oversized sunglasses and delicate jewelry will push your ensemble into old-school Hollywood territory.

Wine Tasting Outfits

A midi dress is the perfect choice for a wine tasting outfit that looks sophisticated and feminine yet casual. During the summertime, it’s best to stick with flowing styles that keep you comfortable as you explore the expansive grounds. If you’re looking for something edgier, consider rocking vibrant colors or bold patterns that will instantly pop in any photograph.

Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

Pretty ruffle dresses are always chic, but you can also cater to your daring side with slits, a charming sweetheart neckline or a hint of cleavage. When it comes to footwear, keep things simple with a pair of Grecian sandals, nude ballerina flats or chunky heels.

Cute Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

When the fall weather hits, a long-sleeve midi dress made from knit or cashmere is a warm and trendy choice that always looks polished. During the wintertime, sturdy boots, black tights and a classic coat will set you up for success as you’re sipping away.

Chic Midi Dress For Winery Outfit

A maxi dress is a romantic choice for the summer months that screams upscale elegance. A typical maxi dress is made from lightweight and airy materials that make battling balmy weather a breeze. Floral patterns are pretty and feminine, but you can rock bold block colors or busy prints if you’d like to showcase your unique style or camouflage any accidents throughout the day.

Cute Maxi Dress For Winery Outfit

To complete your ensemble, try heeled espadrilles or wedges to add a bohemian twist to your look. For something more traditional, you can wear relaxed strappy sandals or thick ankle-strap heels. To keep your dress at the center of your outfit, choose low-key accessories and avoid chunky costume jewelry that might overwhelm your look.

Floral Maxi Dress For Winery Outfit

Cute Shorts and Blouse

Cute shorts and a blouse will never go out of style as they’ll keep you cool and comfortable as you trek through the sprawling vineyards. It’s best to stick with light cotton or linen materials as they’re extremely breathable and will help to wick sweat away from the body.

Shorts and Blouse For Winery Attire

Although you may be able to rock denim shorts at casual family-owned wineries, dressier paperbag, tie-waist or tailored belted styles are generally more appropriate. When it comes to your blouse, you can’t go wrong with a pastel top during springtime or a darker shade during the cooler months. Just remember to pair patterned shorts with a plain blouse and vice versa to avoid unsightly clashes.

Casual Shorts and Blouse For Winery Attire

If you’re worried about looking overly relaxed during your visit, an elegant hat, a pair of neutral mules, and timeless gold jewelry are bound to elevate any ensemble.

Denim Shorts and Blouse For Winery Outfit

Midi Skirt with Tank Top

A midi skirt with a tank top is a fashionable choice that creates an irresistible smart casual outfit. When wearing a skirt to a winery, you can choose a fitted midi to highlight your bombshell body, but flowing linen skirts or silk slip styles are more comfortable options that you can easily dress up or down. Gingham and floral skirts are adorable picks for the spring and summer months, and you can complete your look with casual slip-on mules or sandals for the ultimate in countryside chic.

Cute Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

If you need to create a stylish winter outfit, pair a knitted midi skirt with nude tights, ankle boots, a slimline top and an oversized pea coat for a refined feel that incorporates several practical layers. If you’re worried about being cold but don’t want to switch out your slip skirt, a long-sleeve bodysuit can help you retain heat without sacrificing sex appeal.

Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

For the ultimate fall style, combining a leather camel midi skirt, cream sweater, a textured crossbody bag and a pair of knee-high boots radiates girl boss vibes that you simply can’t beat. To pull your look together, grab a wool fedora and a soft silk scarf.

Trendy Midi Skirt with Tank Top For Winery Outfit

Jeans and Button-Down Shirt

Jeans and a button-down shirt are the perfect pieces for women who want to look modern, stylish and put-together with minimal effort. Although most wineries accept jeans, you’ll want to quickly check a location’s dress code before throwing on your trusty denim. As a rule, it’s best to wear dark wash jeans without rips as they tend to look more elegant than contemporary street styles.

Cute Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Winery Outfit

Black skinny jeans with an off-white blouse look stunning with matching Chelsea boots, but you can also sport dark blue denim with a pastel top for a refined feel during springtime. If you’d prefer to wear flat shoes, classic mules or loafers are solid choices that won’t distract from the main event.

Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Winery Outfit

For a retro vibe, create a double denim look with a lightweight jacket, an oversized blanket scarf and a brown suede fedora. If you’re feeling brave, elegant white jeans work well with cork wedges and a tailored button-down shirt for a corporate-chic feel that looks incredibly refined.

Cute Jeans and Button-Down Shirt For Summer Winery Outfit

Elegant Jumpsuit

An elegant jumpsuit is a stunning alternative to classic dresses or pants when the warmer weather starts to hit. For a textured touch, a sleeveless ribbed jumpsuit can add visual interest to your look during the summer. If you’d like to showcase a hint of skin around your neckline, a V-neck or light plunge detail can add pizzazz to your ensemble in seconds.

Winery Outfit with Elegant Jumpsuit

As a rule, jumpsuits are more popular during spring and summer. However, you can still rock a jumpsuit during the winter months by choosing a long-sleeved cut and throwing on a striking winter coat and a pair of elegant Chelsea boots. To keep your look cohesive, stick with neutral tones and add pops of color with a scarf, a crossbody bag and classy leather gloves.

Cute Winery Outfit with Elegant Jumpsuit

When it comes to footwear, ankle-strap wedges or short nude heels are reliable picks that will keep you comfortable. For women who prefer flat shoes, stick with ballet flats or sandals for the perfect smart-casual feel.

Stylish Winery Outfit with Jumpsuit

Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is an easy way to showcase your signature style during the cooler months, giving you scope to experiment with texture, color and accessories for a trendy and contemporary look. Camel and black are solid hues that flatter every skin tone, but don’t be afraid to rock burgundy, sapphire or emerald shades for the ultimate autumnal style.

Cute Winery Outfit with Sweater Dress

Sleek midi-style sweater dresses in neutral colors are always reliable options for most women, but you can switch things up with a shorter belted style paired with tights if you’re on the petite side. If you opt for a shorter style, bring out your inner daredevil with suede thigh-high boots in a bold shade. To keep you warm while you’re waltzing around the vineyards, throw on a stylish leather jacket, a chic designer scarf and a cute wool fedora.

Chic Poncho and Leggings

A chic poncho and leggings are beautiful choices if you’re heading to a casual winery, as they promise to keep you comfortable during the transitional months while showcasing your feminine side.

Chic Poncho and Leggings For Winery Outfit

You can throw on a neutral poncho with almost any legging color but sticking with classic black leggings allows you to work with brighter accessories and textured footwear for a fun and fresh finish. To add a sophisticated sheen and exciting contrast to your outfit, pair pleather leggings with brown suede ankle boots for a modern and youthful edge that’s bound to turn heads.

Cute Poncho and Leather Leggings For Winery Outfit

If you’re choosing a deep brown poncho, a matching wool fedora will add a playful bohemian touch to your look with minimal effort. If you’d prefer a preppy feel, a pearl or plaid headband is a gorgeous option. Finish your look with vintage sunglasses and gold jewelry for ultimate Cali girl vibes.

Elegant Slip Dress

An elegant slip dress is a stylish choice for a tour and tasting at a winery, offering a figure-flattering and lightweight outfit for the summer. Slip dresses in light colors that feature floral patterns are always trendy options, but deep yellows, blues or reds are also standout picks that will contrast beautifully against the rows of grapes.

Chic Winery Outfit with Slip Dress

If you’re after a low-key look, rock pretty ballerina flats and a long necklace that falls to your breastbone. For a casual feel that’s chic and classy, espadrilles and a canvas tote bag are lovely additions that will lift your ensemble instantly. If you’re planning to wear a slip dress during the cooler months, switch out your flats for ankle boots and keep a roll-neck sweater and a simple pair of tights on hand.

Cute Winery Outfit with Slip Dress

Trousers and Stylish Shirt

You can wear cute pants and a stylish shirt to keep your look classy and casual, allowing you to dress it up or down depending on the occasion. Pairing white linen pants with a black tank top or wearing classic neutrals never fails to look polished. Fashionistas can choose vibrant shades to highlight their individuality.

Cute Winery Outfits with Pants and Stylish Shirt

Tailored silhouettes are the most flattering, but tie-waist pants are an excellent option for women who don’t like wearing fitted pieces. As your clothing will be the focus of your outfit, dainty jewelry, classic sunglasses and basic heeled sandals will pull your ensemble together without overwhelming it.

What to Pack and Wear in Napa Valley

February 27, 2024.

So you've planned the ultimate Napa Valley vacation, now you need to figure out what to pack and how to prep for days filled with world-class wines , vineyard-view hikes , and farm-fresh cuisine . Here are a few travel tips and some ideas for what you should have in your suitcase, no matter the season.

Napa Valley Fashion and Packing Tips

Layer, layer, layer: Since the temperature varies throughout the day (even in the summer), layering is your best bet for staying comfortable.

Spring / Summer: You'll be comfortable in a sundress with a cardigan and sandals. Don’t forget your sunglasses, sunhat, and sunblock.

Fall / Winter: You'll need an extra layer, like a scarf, sweater, and boots. Don't forget to pack an umbrella or raincoat, just in case it rains.

Don’t wear perfumes or heavy lotions when wine tasting as it can muddle your sense of smell and affect your ability to fully enjoy the flavors of the wine. (It can also detract from the tasting experience of those around you.)

Wine Country Casual

Can I wear jeans to a winery? Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual . A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

What is wine country casual attire? Wine country casual is a stylish blend of sophistication and laid-back elegance, no matter the occasion or the season. Whether you're heading out for wine tasting, a concert, dinner, or a hike through the hills, wine country casual is effortlessly chic.

  • Sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals
  • Golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressy shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes

Packing Essentials

Everyone has their own style, but there are a few things you won’t want to leave home without.

Jacket: Temperatures vary from day to evening – even in the summer. This diurnal shift is part of the magic that yields incredible grape harvests in Napa Valley, so layers are key. Have a lightweight outer layer ready – something easy to throw on during the crisp mornings and the cool nights.

Sunglasses: No one likes squinting into the sun while admiring vineyard views. Be sure to have your favorite pair (or two) of shades.

Flat shoes: Opt for chic sneakers, flats, platforms, or wedges for ease of travel across uneven winery pathways.

Tote: Bring a reusable bag, stylish purse, or chic satchel to carry all your extras – plus any picnic provisions, bottles of wine, or new finds from a shopping excursion.

Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout your wine tasting adventures with a reusable water bottle. Fill up your bottle at the hotel and keep it with you on your drive or bike ride to the wineries.

INSIDER TIP : If you forget any essentials, not to worry! There are plenty of shopping destinations to pick up a few items. Check out Napa Premium Outlets , First Street Napa clothing boutiques, and local boutiques dotting Downtown St. Helena and Calistoga .

Napa Valley Weather

The Mediterranean climate of the Napa Valley not only allows for optimal grape growing conditions, it also provides near-perfect weather year-round. The southern part of the valley is much cooler than the northern part and temperatures can vary widely from day to night.

I always plan and recommend dressing in layers. We usually have a slight morning fog that rolls in before the sun breaks through during the day to warm up the vineyards. Sundresses are always a go-to with a jacket and other accessories to dress up for wine country evenings and dinner out.

The Varying Settings of Wine Tours

First things first, wine tours come in various flavors, much like the wines themselves. You could find yourself in the sun-drenched vineyards of Napa Valley, the historic wineries of Bordeaux, or even the mysterious caves of Santorini. Each setting calls for a different approach to dressing.

  • Vineyards: Vineyard tours often involve walking through rows of grapevines, and sometimes, the terrain can be a bit uneven. Think of it as a scenic hike with wine breaks. Comfortable footwear and attire that allows for easy movement are your best bet here.
  • Wineries: Classic wineries offer a more refined atmosphere. You’ll want to strike a balance between looking presentable and feeling comfortable. It’s like attending a sophisticated soirée with a hint of wine education.
  • Caves: Some tours take you underground into the cool, dimly lit world of wine cellars. These places maintain a constant temperature, so you’ll want to dress in layers to adapt to the conditions below ground.

The Impact of Weather on Your Attire

Remember, Mother Nature has a way of throwing curveballs. So, before you select your wine-tasting wardrobe, take a peek at the weather forecast. After all, you don’t want to be caught in a summer dress during an unexpected autumn chill or bundled up in a woolly sweater on a scorching day.

  • Spring Wine Tours : Springtime calls for light and breathable fabrics. Pastels and floral patterns are your friends here. Pair these with comfortable walking shoes, and you’re ready to frolic among the budding vines.
  • Summer Wine Tours : The sun’s shining, the grapes are ripening, and it’s time for those summer tours. Sun protection is essential, so bring along a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Light, flowy dresses for the ladies and linen shirts for the gents keep you cool and stylish.
  • Fall Wine Tours : As the leaves change, so should your attire. Layering is key to adjusting to fluctuating temperatures. Earthy tones and cozy sweaters will have you blending harmoniously with the vineyard scenery.
  • Winter Wine Tours : If you’re braving the wineries in winter, prepare for cold conditions. Warm, insulated clothing is a must, along with dark, rich colors to absorb the sun’s warmth. Don’t forget cold-weather accessories like scarves and gloves.

Remember, wine tours are all about savoring the experience. Dressing appropriately for the season ensures you can do just that without distractions.

Balancing Style and Comfort

Now that you’re aware of the various settings and seasonal considerations, let’s talk about finding that perfect balance between style and comfort. After all, you want to look good while sipping on your Pinot Noir, right?

Your attire should exude a relaxed elegance. Think of it as dressing up for a fun yet educational date. Comfortable clothing allows you to fully appreciate the wine without any wardrobe-induced discomfort. So, leave those restrictive outfits at home, and embrace the magic of wine tour fashion.

Dressing for the Season

Now that we’ve set the stage for the wine tour environment, let’s take a closer look at how to dress for each season. Remember, wine tasting is all about engaging your senses, and your attire plays a pivotal role in enhancing that experience. So, let’s uncork the secrets of dressing right for each season.

Spring Wine Tours

Ah, spring—the season of renewal and rebirth. When planning your attire for a spring wine tour, think light and airy. Here are some tips to make your outfit bloom:

  • Light and Breathable Fabrics : Opt for fabrics like cotton or linen. They keep you cool and comfortable as you explore the vineyards under the gentle spring sun.
  • Pastels and Floral Patterns : Embrace the season’s spirit by incorporating pastel colors and floral patterns into your outfit. These hues blend harmoniously with the colorful vineyard scenery.
  • Comfortable Footwear : Expect to do some walking, so choose comfortable walking shoes. You don’t want to be tiptoeing around the vineyard.

Summer Wine Tours

Summer is synonymous with sunshine, and wine tours during this season can be especially delightful. But you must be prepared to beat the heat while maintaining your style:

  • Sun Protection Essentials : The sun can be relentless, so arm yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Sunburn is the antithesis of a great wine tour.
  • Flowy Dresses and Linen Shirts : Ladies, think flowing sundresses; gentlemen, lightweight linen shirts. These keep you cool and exude that laid-back summer charm.
  • Hydration and Sunblock : Staying hydrated is crucial in the summer sun. Carry a reusable water bottle and don’t forget to apply sunblock to protect your skin from those UV rays.

Fall Wine Tours

As the leaves turn golden and the air crisps up, dressing for fall wine tours is all about embracing the changing seasons:

  • Layering for Changing Temperatures : Fall weather can be unpredictable. Layering allows you to adapt to temperature shifts throughout the day. Think cardigans, vests, and lightweight scarves.
  • Earthy Tones and Cozy Sweaters : Embrace the season’s color palette with earthy tones like deep reds, burnt oranges, and rich browns. Cozy sweaters add comfort and style.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes for Vineyard Terrain : As the terrain might be a bit uneven due to fallen leaves, opt for closed-toe shoes with good grip.

Winter Wine Tours

Braving the wineries in winter can be a magical experience, but it requires extra attention to your attire:

  • Warm and Insulated Clothing : Winter wine tours demand warmth. Bundle up in warm layers, including thermal undergarments, wool sweaters, and a well-insulated coat.
  • Dark, Rich Colors : Dark colors not only keep you warm but also absorb sunlight. Deep burgundies, dark greens, and charcoal grays are perfect for a winter wine tour.
  • Cold-Weather Accessories : Don’t forget to accessorize with cold-weather essentials like scarves, gloves, and a cozy beanie. These details complete your winter wine tour look.

Wine Tour Dress Code Etiquette

Now that we’ve covered the basics of dressing for the season, it’s time to delve into the essential element of wine tour dress code etiquette. Just as you’d follow certain protocols when sipping a fine Bordeaux, dressing appropriately for a wine tour is a form of respect for the winery, the winemakers, and your fellow wine enthusiasts.

Dressing Respectfully for the Winery

Think of your wine tour as a visit to someone’s home. Wineries often have a sense of tradition and history, and you should dress in a way that honors that atmosphere. Even if the dress code is casual, remember that wine is often associated with elegance and refinement.

Understanding the Winery’s Guidelines

Some wineries may have specific dress code guidelines, especially for formal tastings or events. Before your tour, check the winery’s website or contact them to inquire about any dress code requirements. It’s always better to be prepared than to risk an uncomfortable situation.

Dressing Up vs. Dressing Down

Wine tours can range from casual to upscale. While you don’t need to don a tuxedo or a ball gown, you should aim for a smart-casual look that reflects the sophistication of wine culture. This means avoiding overly casual or sloppy attire.

Now, let’s explore some dos and don’ts to help you navigate the nuances of wine tour fashion with grace.

  • Smart Casual Attire : Aim for a look that’s a step above everyday casual. This can include well-fitted jeans, a nice blouse or collared shirt, or a tasteful sundress.
  • Comfortable Footwear : Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes are a must. You may be walking, standing, or even participating in activities like grape stomping, so choose practical footwear.
  • Practical Accessories : Sunglasses, hats, and scarves can not only elevate your style but also provide necessary sun protection and warmth depending on the weather.

Don’ts:

  • Overly Revealing Outfits : Keep it tasteful. Avoid outfits that are too revealing or provocative. Wine tours are about wine appreciation, not a fashion show.
  • Strong Perfumes and Fragrances : Strong scents can interfere with your ability to appreciate the aroma of wines and may distract others. Opt for subtle or no fragrance.
  • Flashy or Noisy Accessories : Leave the jingling bracelets and noisy jewelry at home. They can disrupt the tranquil atmosphere of a winery.

By adhering to these dos and don’ts, you’ll strike the right balance between respect for the winery and your own personal style. Dressing appropriately for a wine tour is like pairing the right wine with the right dish—it enhances the experience.

Wine Tour Dress Essentials

Now that we’ve established the importance of dressing respectfully and smart-casually for wine tours, let’s explore some specific wardrobe essentials that will elevate your wine-tasting experience. You might be surprised to discover how your attire can affect your perception of wine.

Neutral Colors to Avoid Sensory Distractions

Ever noticed how sommeliers and wine experts often wear neutral colors? That’s not just a fashion statement; it’s a conscious choice. Neutral tones like beige, gray, and soft whites won’t interfere with the visual evaluation of wine. When you’re sipping a glass of wine, the last thing you want is a neon pink shirt overpowering the wine’s appearance.

These colors also help you focus on the wine’s color, clarity, and legs (the rivulets that form when you swirl the wine in your glass). They won’t distract your senses as you savor the wine’s bouquet and flavor.

The Role of Stemware-Friendly Attire

Wine glasses are designed with stems for a reason – they allow you to hold the glass without warming the wine with your hand. This is particularly crucial for white wines, which are typically served chilled.

When choosing attire for a wine tour, opt for garments with sleeves that won’t accidentally dip into your wine glass. Long-sleeved shirts or blouses are a safe bet, as they prevent any accidental spills or stains on your outfit. Trust me; your fellow wine enthusiasts will thank you for not causing a vinous wardrobe disaster.

Minimalistic Jewelry for Wine Tasting

While accessorizing can enhance your overall look, less is often more when it comes to wine tasting. Flashy, oversized jewelry can be a distraction, both visually and aurally. Imagine the clinking of bangles as you raise your glass for a toast – it’s a symphony you’d rather avoid during a wine tasting.

Opt for minimalistic jewelry, such as small stud earrings, a simple pendant, or a classic wristwatch. This allows you to enjoy the wines without any unnecessary distractions. Besides, you want to focus on the wine’s intricate flavors, not on the jingle of your accessories.

As you prepare your wine tour wardrobe, keep these essentials in mind. They may seem subtle, but they can significantly enhance your wine-tasting experience by eliminating sensory distractions and allowing you to fully appreciate the nuances of the wine.

Packing for Your Wine Tour

Now that we’ve explored the nuances of wine tour fashion, it’s time to get practical and talk about packing. Creating a wine tour wardrobe that covers all bases while fitting neatly into your suitcase requires a bit of planning. Let’s uncork some tips for efficient packing and create a checklist to ensure you have everything you need.

Creating a Wine Tour Packing Checklist

  • Clothing for the Season : Depending on when and where you’re going, pack the appropriate attire. Consider the weather and activities you’ll be doing, and choose outfits accordingly.
  • Footwear : Bring comfortable walking shoes, sandals or open-toe shoes for warm weather, and closed-toe shoes with good grip for vineyard terrain.
  • Accessories : Don’t forget essential accessories like sunglasses, hats, and scarves. These items can provide sun protection and add style to your outfit.
  • Outerwear : If you’re touring during cooler months, pack a suitable coat or jacket. Ensure it complements your outfits.
  • Minimalistic Jewelry : Keep your jewelry selection simple. A few versatile pieces can go a long way in enhancing your wine tour wardrobe.
  • Stemware-Friendly Attire : Choose clothing with sleeves that won’t dip into your wine glass. Long-sleeved shirts or blouses are a smart choice.
  • Neutral-Colored Clothing : Pack a variety of neutral-colored garments to avoid sensory distractions while tasting wines.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is essential during a wine tour. A reusable water bottle is eco-friendly and practical.
  • Sunscreen and Sunblock : Protect your skin from the sun’s rays, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors.
  • Toiletries : Bring travel-sized toiletries, including hand sanitizer, to freshen up during your tour.
  • Wine Purchase Storage : If you plan to buy wine during your tour, consider bringing wine packing materials like bubble wrap or wine sleeves to protect your precious cargo.

Tips for Packing Efficiently

  • Roll, Don’t Fold : Rolling your clothes saves space and minimizes wrinkles.
  • Mix and Match : Select pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits, reducing the number of items you need to pack.
  • Limit Shoe Choices : Shoes take up space, so limit yourself to a few versatile pairs that match multiple outfits.
  • Travel-Friendly Fabrics : Choose fabrics that resist wrinkles and dry quickly, making them ideal for travel.
  • Travel-Sized Toiletries : To save space and comply with airline regulations, opt for travel-sized toiletries.
  • Pack an Extra Bag : Bring a collapsible duffel bag or tote for any wine purchases or souvenirs you pick up during your tour.

Remember that efficient packing is all about striking a balance between having what you need and traveling light. By following this checklist and these packing tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable wine tour without the hassle of overpacking.

Wine Tour Footwear

As we journey deeper into the world of wine tours, it’s time to pay special attention to your feet. Footwear might not be the most glamorous aspect of your wine tour attire, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most crucial. Let’s explore why the right shoes matter and which types of footwear are suitable for various aspects of your vineyard adventures.

The Importance of Comfortable Shoes

Wine tours often involve a fair amount of walking and standing. Whether you’re strolling through vineyards, touring cellars, or participating in wine-related activities, comfortable footwear can make or break your experience. Imagine the discomfort of traversing uneven terrain in impractical shoes – it’s not a pretty picture. Come check out the Tarrawarra Yarra Valley Winery & Yarra Valley Restaurant.

Types of Footwear Suitable for Wine Tours

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes : For the most part, comfortable walking shoes are your go-to option. These can include sneakers, walking shoes, or comfortable flats. Look for styles with good arch support and cushioning to keep your feet happy during long days of exploration.
  • Sandals or Open-Toe Shoes : In warm weather, open-toe shoes or sandals with good support can be a fantastic choice. Just ensure they provide enough grip, especially if you plan to walk through vineyard rows.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes with Grip : If you’re touring vineyards or wineries with potentially uneven terrain, closed-toe shoes with a good grip are essential. Think sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes.
  • Boots : In cooler weather or if you’re visiting wineries with muddy paths, ankle or mid-calf boots can keep your feet warm and dry. Opt for styles with good traction.
  • Wine-Themed Footwear : If you’re feeling festive or visiting a winery with a particular theme, you might consider wine-themed footwear. These can add a playful touch to your outfit.

Why High Heels Should Stay Behind

While high heels are undoubtedly stylish, they are generally not suitable for wine tours. Here’s why:

  • Uneven Terrain : Vineyards and wineries often have uneven, gravelly, or grassy paths. High heels can be hazardous on such surfaces, posing a risk of injury or sinking into the ground.
  • Comfort : Wine tours involve a lot of walking and standing. High heels can quickly become uncomfortable and may lead to sore feet and blisters.
  • Safety : Wine tours might involve slippery surfaces, especially in cellars. High heels provide less stability, increasing the risk of accidents.

In the world of wine tours, comfort and practicality take precedence over high fashion. Leave the high heels for a different occasion, and opt for footwear that ensures a safe and enjoyable wine-tasting experience.

Dressing for Winery Specifics

Now that we’ve got your wine tour wardrobe well underway let’s navigate the nuanced territory of dressing for specific winery settings and any attire requirements you might encounter during your wine tour escapades. Wine tours can take you to various winery types, each with its own unique ambiance and expectations.

Dressing for Vineyard Tours

Vineyard tours are a quintessential part of the wine-tasting experience. Walking among the rows of grapevines, basking in the sun, and taking in the stunning views are highlights. To blend seamlessly into this picturesque setting:

  • Comfortable Casual : Opt for smart-casual attire. Lightweight pants or jeans paired with a comfortable top are ideal. Add a sun hat and sunglasses for sun protection.
  • Appropriate Footwear : Closed-toe shoes with good traction are best for navigating vineyard terrain. Think of it as a stylish hike through the vines.
  • Layering : Depending on the weather, layering is your friend. Bring along a light jacket or sweater that you can easily put on or take off as needed.

Winery-Specific Attire Requirements

Some wineries, particularly those with formal tasting rooms or special events, may have specific dress code requirements. These could range from business casual to cocktail attire. It’s always a good idea to check the winery’s website or contact them ahead of time to understand their expectations.

Themed Wine Tours and Costumes

Wine tours can get creative, and you might find yourself on a themed wine tour or attending an event with a specific dress code. For instance, a masquerade ball at a winery or a retro-themed tour. Embrace these opportunities to have fun with your outfit and immerse yourself in the theme.

In such cases, the winery will likely provide guidance on what to wear, but don’t be afraid to get creative and express your style. Just remember to balance the theme with practicality and comfort.

Dressing for Safety and Comfort

Some wine tours involve hands-on activities like grape stomping or wine barrel tastings. When participating in these activities, dress with safety and comfort in mind:

  • Footwear : Closed-toe shoes are essential to protect your feet during grape stomping or when walking around the winemaking facilities.
  • Clothing You Don’t Mind Getting Dirty : Activities like grape stomping can get messy. Wear clothing that you won’t mind getting a bit stained with grape juice.
  • Protection from the Elements : Depending on the activity and location, you might need additional protection. Sunscreen for outdoor activities and a jacket for cooler winery interiors are wise choices.

Remember, dressing appropriately for the specific winery setting not only enhances your experience but also shows respect for the winery’s ambiance and the effort put into creating a unique atmosphere for visitors. Learn more about your Alcohol limits here: Alcohol Health .

Can I wear jeans to a wine tour?

Yes, you can wear jeans to a wine tour, especially if they are well-fitted and in good condition. Pair them with a smart-casual top and comfortable footwear for a stylish and practical look.

What should I wear to a winery wedding?

For a winery wedding, opt for semi-formal or cocktail attire. Women can choose a dress or a skirt and blouse, while men can go for slacks and a dress shirt. Pay attention to the formality level mentioned in the wedding invitation.

Are flip-flops ever acceptable for a wine tour?

Flip-flops are generally not recommended for wine tours, especially if you'll be walking through vineyards or winery facilities. Closed-toe shoes with good grip are a safer and more comfortable choice.

What To Wear To A Winery | Wine Tasting & Winery Outfits

Outfits , Style , Style Guides , Travel

Wine tasting is more than just actually tasting the wine. Visiting a winery is the whole experience! Enjoy the crisp outdoor air, your favorite type of grape or fruit wine, rolling hills, and a fun afternoon with your favorite people.

Whether you’re going out with a date, a friend, or colleagues, a wine and tasting tour is something you won’t regret. It’s one of our favorite activities year-round!

But if you’re planning your wine tasting outfits for an upcoming winery tour, you might realize there just isn’t much information out there. What does one wear to a winery?

Today, we’re here to help you figure out what to wear to a winery and plan your wine tasting outfits for any future event! Read on to learn how to style your outfit, know the basic no-nos when tasting wine, and discover chic wine-tasting ensembles for every season.

How To Style A Wine Tasting Outfit

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Chic but comfortable shoes

Wearing comfortable shoes on a wine trip is probably one of the most underrated styling tips I know. Some people turn up in the prettiest shoes but the most ridiculous pairs to walk on the grass.

You should only consider wearing heels when the tasting is expected to occur inside or on concrete. Trust me – you want to be sure before choosing heels!

But if your destination is within the vineyards or outdoors in general, consider that you might be walking on dirt, gravel, grass, or cobblestone. I recommend wearing flats, sandals, loafers, or slides for a chic but comfortable look. You can sometimes get away with wedges if you’re an expert on heels.

If it has rained before your trip, expect lots of mud. Bring a pair of ankle boots or sneakers you don’t mind getting dirt on for an emergency.

Small, fuss-free purse

During a wine tasting tour, you will be strolling around and active, which means you don’t want to bring something bulky. A bulky bag is not only inconvenient but doesn’t really go with the free-flowing wine-tasting outfits look. The ideal bag you can bring is a medium purse with a sling strap that you can carry your essentials along while holding a glass of wine.

Here are some of my favorite purses for classic winery outfits.

A cute sweater or jacket

A cover-up layer is unnecessary if the weather is super hot, but something like a wool shawl can keep you cozy from the breeze while strolling around the vineyards in the colder seasons. I recommend a lightweight sweater, jean jacket, or cute shawl that goes with your look.

A light or vibrant outfit with prints & color

When figuring out what to wear to a winery, you don’t have to stay with basic and neutral colors. Most wine tasting outfits incorporate some sort of prints – check out the example photos below to see what I mean. They also incorporate a lot of pastel or French-inspired colors.  My favorite prints in winery outfits are gingham, stripes, plaids, and floral.

Undyed linen clothing *at your own risk*

If you’re not into prints and bold colors, there’s really no harm in opting for neutral and earthy colors such as undyed clothing. Undyed clothing, like linen, is airy, fresh, and stylish. Plus, it looks good in pictures – very organic and natural.

But watch out for your outfit if you have a tendency to spill drinks  or if you’ll be sitting in the grass! A winery is an  easy  place to stain your clothes.

Tips For Choosing Wine Tasting Outfits

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Aside from styling your outfit, there are some things that you need to know for a seamless wine tasting experience.

1. Put your hair up

When you’re on a vineyard tour or participating in an outdoor wine tasting, you should consider putting your hair up or bringing a clip. You will have more freedom to move around and concentrate on the wine, cheese, and food. Additionally, this keeps your hair away from the wine.

Knowing all of this is helpful so that you can prepare your hair for a bun or tied-up look before you arrive at the venue. The ponytail or messy bun look is super trendy, especially at wineries!

2. Avoid wearing lipstick

We all love lipstick, but we  don’t love lipstick stains on wine glasses. Opt for a colored chapstick or non-staining lip tink so you don’t have to keep reapplying.

3. Keep your scent neutral

Keeping your scent neutral is food and beverage tasting etiquette. Plus, no one is going to smell your perfume anyways when you’re surrounded by the scent of wine!

4. Check out the winery ahead of time

When you’re wondering what to wear to a winery, the first step should be to check out the  actual winery online. Look on Instagram or Facebook to get an accurate vibe of how casual vs. fancy the winery is. I’ve been to wineries that range from  super casual (literally a farm stand vibe) to incredibly fancy with a sit-down tasting.

While all of the wine tasting outfits we’ll go over will work great, you’ll want to dress your outfit up or down depending on the specific venue.

What To Wear To A Winery: Outfit Combinations

Here are some of our favorite winery outfits and combinations to help you figure out what to wear.

Flowy Dresses

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

One of my favorite things on a vineyard tour is to imagine myself in fairytale land and recreate the look in pictures. I make this possible by wearing a flowy maxi dress.

If the wind cooperates, you’ll love a patterned maxi dress. But really, any flowy dress makes it easy to move around and still feel like you’re on a French villa.

You can opt for loafers, sneakers, or flats for your footwear. Bring a cover-up such as a shawl or a cardigan if the weather is chilly.

The flowy dress (of any length) is the classic look for most winery outfits. I recommend starting here if you’re unsure what to wear to a winery!

Blouse & Jeans

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Jeans are easy to move in and they look casually smart with a nice blouse. My ‘nice blouse’ capsule consists of off-shoulder tops, ruffled tops, and collared button-downs.

This ensemble gives you a chic but laid-back and relaxed style with which you would want to walk around the vineyard and taste the wine. If the weather permits, you can go for open-toed sandals. A pair of loafers will do otherwise.

If you’re wondering what to wear to a winery that’s more casual, the jeans and blouse look may work perfectly for you.

A Romper or Jumpsuit

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Rompers are easy to put on and move around in. I see a romper like a dress that’s not too dressy. They look smart, casual, and classy — perfect for a day for wine tasting.

When it’s cold out, I usually wear a denim jacket or leather jacket over my romper. This completes the outfit as well. For your footwear, you can go for dainty open-toed sandals.

A romper is a great option when you’re wondering what to wear to a winery and have no idea how fancy or casual the venue is.

A midi skirt gives the same magical feel that a flowy dress can provide. Plus, anything with one can make it feel like you’re on a real vacation far away from home. While flowy dresses emulate a fairy-like vibe, midi skirts make you feel like you’re in Paris — tasting the origins of the wine. It’s a classy and elegant piece to play with as well!

While I’m a huge fan of incorporating the midi dress into my wine tasting outfits, I  also love the midi  skirt because I can style it more casual if I’m not sure what the winery looks like.

What To Wear To A Winery For Every Season

When picking an appropriate wine tasting outfit, it’s not entirely about picking the right style. It is also about considering the location, the weather conditions, and the season you’re going. Consider where you’re staying, when you’re staying, and the weather which you will be living with during your time of visit.

What To Wear To A Winery In the Spring

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Next to autumn, spring is the best time to visit wine vineyards and experience wine tasting tours with friends. It may not be harvest season just yet, but it’s the best time to plan picnics, hiking ventures, locals night, and outdoor drinking/tasting. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to style outfits based on the activities that the weather and the season permit.

It’s important to know that it can still be a little chilly outside at most wineries in the spring. A jacket, a wool shawl/scarf, or a sweater on hand is still a good idea. To keep your hands free, you can tie your sweater or jacket across your shoulder and your hips to act as a nice accent to your outfit.

For your shoes, loafers are ideal but if you can afford a bit of risk or if you won’t be strolling a lot, you can go for open-toed sandals.

For your color palette, opt for vibrant, colorful, and floral colors to match the aura of the season . Floral prints, bold patterns, and pastel colors are also one of the best go-to’s for spring .

I f you’re going for a picnic date, a nice floral picnic dress and a woven basket for lunch and snacks is a great accessories to spice up your photos. Hiking dates are also a different matter. Depending on the terrain, you will be needing good quality and dressy hiking shoes to avoid slipping. Typically, winery hikes are not as strenuous as peak/mountain hikes, so a pair of jeans can most likely work. Of course, a lightweight windbreaker or an emergency sweater can always come in handy.

Springtime is literally the perfect time to plan winery outfits: just about all wine tasting outfits have springtime patterns!

What To Wear to A Winery In Summer

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

As with all summers, summer in a wine-bearing town or city is beautiful, warm, and sunny. The temperature ranges from 80° to 90° and cools to 50° when the sun goes down.

Adjusting your clothing and adding a couple of practical (but stylish) accessories like a sun hat can do you good. While you don’t have to worry about rain as much as spring, you need to worry about the sun. Grapes love hot days!

You would want to wear something elegant and casual for group wine tours. A linen blouse or top and dressy shorts will work great. If you’re looking for a modest alternative, you can wear a maxi skirt or lightweight culottes .

If you’re going on a more intimate wine date with an S.O., you can wear something more feminine, like a midi skirt and a tank top or a flowy dress.

The last thing you’d want to wear in the summer is jeans since they can feel sticky and heavy when worn in humid weather. When choosing a summer outfit, think airy, fresh, and sunny. Since you have more freedom in the summer, footwear can either be open-toed or close-toed. For summer hikes, you can opt for walking sandals if that’s more comfortable.

You can apply the concept similar to spring outfits for the color palette. Floral, vibrant, and sunny. Personally, when I think of summer, the colors I imagine are yellows and greens. Perhaps a sunflower dress or a yellow gingham skirt – how cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Fall

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

In most wine regions in the country, particularly Northern California, harvest season occurs during the fall. Like spring, fall is not exactly cold or hot – perfect for strolling and enjoying the outdoor breeze. Fall is also the best time to arrange picking activities if you visit a winery with a vineyard and want to get active.

If you ask me, the best time to visit a winery is during early fall, when the weather is crisp and breezy but slightly warm. And it’s my favorite time to plan winery outfits! Nonetheless, late fall is great with the layers.

For me, it’s the perfect time to dress up in gorgeous sweater dresses, burnt orange knits, and knee-high boots . We’re also about incorporating more seasonal colors like red, orange, brown, olive green, and mustard .

It depends on the month you’re going, but some cozy layers like a jacket, a knit jacket, or a wool shawl are ideal.

You should also consider the chance of rain during this time (which is highly likely). Bringing a mini umbrella or a pocketable waterproof poncho will be helpful, especially if it takes a bit of a walk from the parking area to the main vicinity. If you’re going on a tour, a pocketable windbreaker or rain jacket will be handy when the necessity arrives. To make sure, always check the weather for the day so you can prepare ahead.

Although fall is not as sunny and warm as summer, it is a great time to sit by the winery patio, taste some wines, hear the rustling of the leaves and watch a breezy sunset with a friend or an S.O. Fall makes the best, photographic views that the mind can never forget. Plus, winery outfits in the fall are just too cute!

What To Wear To A Winery In Winter

what to wear to a winery | winery outfits | wine tasting outfits

Surprisingly, winery and vineyard visits during winter are possible! In fact, vineyards are very much alive even during this time of year.

Wineries and vineyards during winter are not like in other months. Unlike the boisterous crowd wineries usually have during summer and fall, winter visits are calmer and more peaceful. Although the weather might not be the most ideal, since it will be cold, there is nothing compared to a relaxing and memorable wine date with your loved ones. But your winery outfits should  definitely be warm enough.

On days like these, you want to wear something snug, comfortable, and stylish . Instead of puffer jackets and sports sweaters, you can go for something tailored like a long coat or a leather jacket over a knit sweater dress for your winery outfits.

I also like to wear turtle necks and midiskirts with thermal tights underneath. This gives me the opportunity to wear something flowy during this time of year. If you’re not feeling like wearing a dress, you can go for a thermal turtleneck top, a thick wool cardigan, and fitted jeans. If you’re staying in for the night, it’s better to overestimate the cold temperature than to find yourself in need of more layers in a cumbersome time.

Tip: When the weather demands layers, take the opportunity to combine varieties of texture, color, and fabric type for your wine tasting outfits.

For your footwear, opt for something with enough coverage to keep your feet from the cold. Also, skip the heels unless you’re staying inside the winery. The cobblestone walkways and muddy floors can be troublesome with the wrong footwear.

Wineries during winter are a magical and special time of year. Because of the minimal crowd, couples flock to wineries in these months.

First things first, let’s talk about the winery dress attire code. Although there are no strict rules, everyone expects you to look nice. Plus, you’ll receive better service and attention if you look your best.

So, let’s discuss the basic clothing etiquette rules that apply to all locations and seasons!

When you’re at wine tasting trying to focus on the different flavors, a strong perfume will only get in the way and mess up your taste buds.

Therefore, go easy on the scent.

I advise you to pick some light deodorant and totally skip the perfume for this occasion. This is the only way you can decipher the prominent notes of the wine. Besides, not everyone appreciates distracting fragrances, and some people may even be allergic.

Whatever you want to wear at the winery, remember that comfort is the key. So, along with your perfume, skip heels as well.

In case you’re planning to visit many wineries in a day or have signed up for a wine tour, you’ll have to walk a lot, so comfy shoes are the only option. But don’t worry, it doesn’t only have to be sneakers.

Ladies, you can decide between some nice loafers, flat sandals, slides, or wedges.

Moreover, I suggest you consider whether you’ll be walking on cobblestone, gravel, dirt, or grass. The type of terrain will help you make the right choice.

Since heels are out of the question, I’m about to show you a commonly worn footwear at wineries. Closed-toe shoes pair the best with clothes to wear to a winery. If you’re still not convinced, let me show you two appropriate options:

I prefer closed-toe shoes as they protect your toe fingers and still look good. This footwear ensures style and comfort with each step.

Let’s see another option:

These cute ballerina pumps redefine class and elegance with comfortable wear. The best thing? They pair perfectly with all types of dresses!

I know how much women love yoga pants because I’m the one, too. And I am sorry to burst your bubble, but this is also something that’s not appropriate to wear to a wine festival or any other winery event. But don’t worry, here are two other pant options that you can wear instead:

I personally adore chino trousers as they’re not too tight or thick – ideal for summer. The loose fit and permanent cuff at the ends maximize comfort for wine tasting.

But if chino isn’t your cup of tea, here’s an alternative:

I bet you guessed it already! Jeans are versatile enough for this occasion too. These ankle-high jeans can look good with a blouse, shirt, or top. Plus, you can move in the stretchy fabric easily.

When it comes to clothes to wear to a winery, women are often confused about whether shorts are appropriate for this event. Well, luckily, you can bring them to the party! But let me guide you to the best models with two Pinterest examples.

These airy, white, frilled shorts seem to reflect cottagecore vibes. A black top, handbag, and sandals ensure the perfect look during your wine tasting journey.

But if you want something a bit more common, you can pick something like this:

Simple and sweet, jean shorts are every girl’s best friend. And yes, you can absolutely wear them to the winery. Just pair them with the right T-shirt and blouse and you’ll rock this style.

Based on the season, layering up is always a good idea. By dressing in layers, you’ll be able to adjust to the changing temperatures and enjoy your experience.

In the summer and spring months, opt for a denim jacket or some cute floral blazer. Let me inspire you with an adorable combo:

What about an outfit that is both stylish and comfortable? Look no further than this combination of a floral blazer and shorts. This ensemble is perfect for a day spent exploring the winery or meeting friends for lunch.

Lastly, a long warm cardigan is a great choice for fall and winter. Consider something like this:

However, when it comes to adding layers, ensure that your look doesn’t appear bulky, as you need maximum freedom of movement.

If you want insight on the best fashion tips for wineries, let me give it to you straight – dress a bit classier than usual.

Since wine tasting is itself a posh activity, everyone is expected to dress nice and classy. And since you’re reading this guide to learn how to dress better for the occasion, I’m here to help you.

Ladies, try wearing a tulle skirt, a sensual dress, or a bow top. Just pull out the most trendy and chic outfit you own and flaunt it!

12 Outfits to Wear to a Winery

We’re finally ready to unveil different clothes to wear to a winery. As always, I have made plenty of outfit ideas based on different seasons and styles.

After this guide, you’ll become an expert on winery outfits. Let’s dive in!

When I think about wine tasting outfits, florals automatically come to mind. There’s some special charm in a floral print, don’t you think? And the first season that comes to mind is spring.

So, here’s how to rock a springtime attire in a winery:

Inspire yourself with a romance of winery gardens in this floral dress that looks so cute! If you want to elevate this look, just add some dangling earrings and a black clutch.

And since it might be muddy in the vineyard, I suggest you wear closed-toe shoes which you wouldn’t mind getting dirty.

When it comes to spring clothes to wear to a winery, I recommend choosing a classy midi dress, like this one:

This polka dot dress is so cute and flattering, and you’ll be able to wear it with confidence! The belt in the center and the flowy skirt really pull the look together.

I’d recommend pairing it with a floral shoulder bag, beige ballerina pumps, and statement earrings to seal the deal.

When temperatures start to drop, that’s when stylish layers get their time to shine. I would like to say that this is the motto of casual winery outfits in the fall.

Besides, autumn sometimes feels gloomy and cloudy, so let’s add some color to our styling with a chic pink sleeveless dress:

This piece  is mesmerizing on its own, but you can really make it pop by wearing a knitted, lightweight cardigan on top. A sweater over a dress is a timeless combo that looks brilliant!

Among clothes to wear to a winery, blouses and shorts have earned a solid reputation for being reliable and stylish. This is an ideal combination to wear during the summer months when the heat is unbearable.

Let me show you how fancy it can look:

The black shorts featuring flowers and a cotton off-shoulder blouse are both great picks for summer. Elegant sandals, a handbag, and tassel earrings add the perfect touch of playfulness.

As we can see from the example above, the outfits for ladies in the warmer months usually include an off-shoulder neckline as it lets your skin breathe.

So, tell me, what do you think about something like this?

This cute cocktail dress would be perfect for a summer day at the winery. It features a nice green color suitable for the season. Pair it with closed-toe breathable shoes and a striking yellow bag to look flawless!

When it comes to clothes to wear to a winery that are both practical and induce confidence, I want to present you with this fantastic combo:

I love the elegance of this blue midi skirt! I own a couple of such pieces, and they always come to the rescue when I don’t know what to wear. A skirt like this can pair effortlessly with a solid tank top and look stunning.

In contrast, add some golden details to bring the outfit to the next level.

And what if you don’t want to wear a dress to the winery? No worries, I have an excellent alternative for you – a jumpsuit. It looks great on most body types and is really easy to wear and accessorize.

Take a look at this one:

This red jumpsuit creates a chic outfit that would be perfect for a posh winery. You can accessorize it with gold hoop earrings and timeless black pumps.

And don’t forget your sunnies!

If you are wondering if there are any casual clothes to wear to a winery, I have good news – yes, the options are endless! In this case, jeans come in handy to save the day. So if you were asking yourself, “Can I wear jeans to a winery?” there’s a positive answer again – yes, you can!

Check out this combo:

This combination is perfect for a visit to a vineyard! Wide-leg jeans and a top with ruffles create a balance between classy and everyday wear. The green loafers are an elegant touch, and the small handbag is the perfect size for carrying the essentials.

What do you think about wearing a maxi dress for the winery? I think it would be a great choice!

Personally, I’d go for an airy maxi dress to ensure freedom of movement. I just love feeling like I’m not wearing anything at all.

Here’s an example of a dress I’m talking about:

The open-toe sandals, black sunnies, and navy blue handbag pair flawlessly with the rest of the outfit.

And if you are looking for the perfect one-and-done outfit to wear to a wine tasting event, go with a cute romper – they are stylish and look flattering on all body types.

Let me show you one adorable romper that I fell in love with:

The loose fabric will help keep you from getting too hot in the sun and protect your skin at the same time. Add some neutral accessories and show up to your next wine tasting looking like a total boss!

If you’re looking for something that will give you that country club aesthetic, choose floral clothes to wear to a winery.

For example, this blue floral dress is so pretty! You could pair it with some basic sandals or add a blue bag and earrings for a more put-together look.

Finally, let’s talk about what to wear in the winter months – cold temperatures can really complicate your outfit choices! But layers are your best friend. Besides, a layered look is always more stylish than a single piece of clothing.

Wondering how to do it? Let me show you:

Doesn’t this ensemble look warm and cozy? Just choose a basic sweater and a long sleeveless cardigan. Finally, add cowboy boots to the combo as an extra fancy detail.

Ready to look fantastic during your summer visit to the winery? In this section, I’ll show you both formal and casual wine tasting outfit ideas for the hot weather.

Let’s go!

Fancy a black-and-white combination? Then you’ll love this one-shoulder dress. It guarantees ventilation and freedom of mobility – two things needed for summer.

In this dress, you’ll be comfortable no matter what. Whether sitting or standing, you’ll feel great during your winery visit. Pair it with black accessories, and you’ll seal the deal! By the way, if you are a broad-shouldered lady , this asymmetrical cut will perfectly balance your upper body.

And if you want something tighter and more attractive, consider wearing a bodycon dress like this:

If you think you can handle a tight piece during your wine tasting tour, this floral dress belongs to the best clothes to wear to a winery. It strikes a balance between dressy and casual. Style it with chunky sandals, a beachy bag, and black sunnies to protect your eyes.

P.S. If you are wondering what are the best shoes to wear with a red dress , I recently wrote about it, so you can check out your options.

And now we are coming to the crisp autumn season that brings you in the mood for wine tasting. That’s why I have prepared two outfit ideas.

Check out the first one:

For a fall trip to the winery, I would go for a relaxed and lightweight sweater with stretchy pants. You could brighten up the outfit by adding ankle boots and a purse in burgundy since this color resembles wine. And I don’t know about you, but this looks like a great outfit idea for senior pictures as well, right?

Next, if you want to wear a nice dress suitable for autumn walks, let me inspire you with this beautiful model:

If you don’t want to bring a layering piece, you can wear a long-sleeved shirt under the dress, so you don’t have to sacrifice your style. Besides, dresses with A-line skirts and a belt on the waistline are the perfect option for hiding the tummy.

And again, add some burgundy details that will fit perfectly into the event.

And when temperatures really drop, it’s time for a winery dinner party! But don’t worry, I’ve got your back, ladies! I’ve prepared two fantastic outfits for the colder days.

Let me show you the first one:

I love this color combination! A white turtleneck sweater and brown wide-leg pants look adorable together. Finally, beige loafers, a small purse, and a long brown coat complete the outfit and make you ready to shine!

And if you prefer dresses even when the snow is falling outside, then a sweater dress is the perfect option.

If you’re looking for a cozy and stylish way to stay warm and look fancy in your winter wine tour outfit , you can’t go wrong with a sweater dress.

Complete the look with details such as a purse, thigh-high boots, and a belted coat.

4 Outfits for Guys to Wear to a Winery

Enough about ladies; I bet my male readers are dying to see some cute outfits for themselves to flaunt at a winery.

Ahead, I’ve shared four outfits, and to keep it fair, you will find out how to dress up for different seasons as well. Here we go, guys!

The first section is for guys looking for unique clothes to wear to a winery. In my opinion, men should experiment with their fashion sense in summer by wearing something similar to this:

This Hawaiian-style shirt looks great with blue shorts and classy loafers. I would definitely recommend this outfit for hot summer days when you want to look your best and not get too hot. It’s simple and so cool at the same time!

Moving into the fall season, it’s important to consider both a warm September afternoon and a chilly morning. Here’s how you can ace your look in both temperatures:

Put on a polo shirt, jeans, and comfortable sneakers, and don’t forget to bring a cardigan if it gets cold.

Don’t be fooled by the hot afternoon hours because you can already feel the chilly air during the evening. For this reason, some layering pieces are a must-have on autumn days.

When it gets cold enough that a coat becomes necessary, you can put on something like this for winter outfits for vineyards:

This head-to-toe black attire is how men can look ‘winery cool.’ The elements in this ensemble pair nicely to create an edgy and poised vibe.

Throw in black socks, comfy pants, and ankle boots, and you’re good to go. This outfit proves one thing – less is more!

And if you’re looking for an idea of what to wear during the spring heat, then I’m sure you’ll love this timeless combination – khaki pants and a breathable white shirt.

This outfit incorporates neutral tones that never go out of style. This is the best way to achieve breathability and coverage at the same time in the spring.

To take the outfit to the next level, add a belt and All Star footwear, and you will look absolutely fantastic!

Here, I conclude my guide on clothes to wear to a winery. I hope all of you now know that the juxtaposition between practical and stylish is the secret ingredient in creating a flawless ‘wine-tasting’ ensemble.

Let’s go through the tips once again:

  • Don’t wear perfume, heels, and yoga pants in the winery.
  • During the muddy weather, always wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Layers are a great option for all seasons.
  • Although there is no strict dress code, try to be a little more dressed up than usual.

What to Wear Wine Tasting

a group of friends that went wine tasting together cheersing in a vineyard

Wine Tasting Attire Do's and Don'ts

If you’re planning on going on a wine tasting adventure, one thing you might be wondering is what to wear. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! In this blog post, we’ll be discussing the dos and don’ts of wine-tasting outfits and giving you some helpful tips on what to wear for your next wine tour.

When choosing the best wine-tasting outfit to wear on a wine tour, we recommend sticking to comfortable and stylish choices that are appropriate for the season and your itinerary.

a group of friends that went wine tasting together cheersing in a vineyard

Here are some quick Do’s and Don’t for your special day wine tasting:

  • Do Bring Layers: wine tasting rooms, cellars or barrel rooms can be cooler than outdoor areas, so you’ll want to be sure to have layers with you to keep you comfortable regardless of where the day takes you.
  • Do Choose Comfortable Shoes : you can usually expect to do some walking or standing during a wine tour, so comfortable shoes will be key! On top of that, many wineries have dirt, gravel or grass surfaces that are uneven, so having comfortable shoes will prevent you from tripping or hurting yourself. Stylish flats, low wedges or low-heeled booties, loafers, or comfortable sandals will keep you comfortable and looking great.

Do Go for Neutral and Dark Colors – when wine tasting, we recommend choosing dark or neutral colors, such as black, navy, gray, or earth tones, since accidents and splashes can happen and these colors tend to be more forgiving than whites or pastels. Clothes with a pattern can also hide any spills or splashes as well.

Do Wear a Hat and Bring Sunglasses – many wineries have outdoor seating, or you may walk through a vineyard, so we recommend bringing a hat and sunglasses to protect you from the sun.

Do Bring a Tote or Small Bag – this will help you hold essentials such as a notebook, pen, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle to keep you hydrated, and any souvenirs you may find throughout the day! If you’re planning to purchase wine throughout the day, be sure that your vehicle has a cooler or someplace safe to store your wine without it overheating and getting cooked.

  • Don’t Wear Perfume or Fragrances – avoid wearing heavy perfumes, colognes or lotions with strong smells. These can interfere with the aromas of the wine and bother other tasters who are trying to asses the aromas in the wine.
  • Don’t Wear Clunky Jewelry – choose simple accessories that won’t get in the way of your wine tasting. Clunky jewelry can clank against glasses or more easily knock glasses off the table.
  • Don’t Wear White or Light-Colored Clothing – while white & light colored clothing can look elegant (& keep you cool on a hot day!), they are more susceptible to spills or stains when wine tasting. If it’s going to be hot during your visit, try to opt for darker colors in lighter fabrics – such as linen or cotton.
  • Don’t Wear Clothes that Aren’t Comfortable  – wearing clothes that are overly tight or complicated to get in and out of may not be the best fit on a wine tour. You’ll often walk through vineyards, sit and stand for long periods, and since you’re consuming water and wine all day, you’ll likely use the restroom frequently. So you want to make sure your clothes are comfortable and easy to wear for extended periods.
  • Don’t Overdress or Underdress – while some wineries are more luxurious than others, your winery outfit shouldn’t be formal. So keep the cocktail dresses at home, and instead opt for a stylish sundress. On the flip side, sweatpants aren’t typically appropriate for wine tasting. However, a cute pair of jeans with a nice blouse or top are perfect for a day wine tasting!

In the end, the most important thing to wear on a wine tour is your smile! Wine tasting is a fun, social and casual day out where you get to spend time with friends and make some new ones.

Can you wear jeans to a winery?

Absolutely! Jeans are a great option for a day of wine tasting.

Some wineries may be more upscale than others, so it doesn’t hurt to checkout the wineries beforehand and maybe look at their social media to see how others have dressed there!

Regardless, you can always dress your jeans up with a chic blouse, sweater or cute blazer.

How should you dress for wine tasting in Paso Robles?

Paso Robles is a world class wine region, with a casual and approachable feel.

While a wine region like Napa Valley has many luxury estates that may require more elegant wine-tasting attire, it’s not uncommon to see people in Paso Robles wine country wearing jeans with cowboy boots.

So when planning your perfect wine-tasting outfit for Paso Robles – remember that comfort is key.

Paso Robles has a Mediterranean climate with warm to hot summers and mild winters. Daily temperatures also fluctuate greatly and can have a 50-degree difference between the daytime to the nighttime temperature – so be sure to bring layers and plan for the evenings to be chilly compared to the daytime temperatures.

Many wineries in Paso Robles are also rustic and off-the-beaten-path, so wearing comfortable shoes is important so that you don’t have trouble walking on uneven surfaces. Having comfortable shoes also allows you to explore more of the properties you’re visiting!

Daytimes in Paso Robles can have lots of heat and sun, so don’t forget your sunscreen and a hat to provide shade can be a good choice too.

Always check the weather forecast before your trip to be sure you’re prepared!

If there is going to be rain or extreme heat, call the wineries to ask if they will have covered or indoor seating for your group and prepare accordingly.

Ultimately, Paso Robles has a relaxed vibe, so pick clothes that are stylish and comfortable to make the most of your wine-tasting experience.

What to Wear to a Winery: Perfect Outfits + Practical Tips

  • Updated October 7, 2022

girl walking through a vineyard in yellow dress example for what to wear to a winery in summer

If you’re headed to a winery, what should you wear? The answer might seem obvious – after all, it’s not like you’re going to a black tie event. But there are still some things to keep in mind when choosing what to wear to a winery. In this article, we’ll give you outfit ideas, no matter what the season or which wine region you visit.

Our editors have been to vineyards and wineries all over the world. No matter the region or destination, what people wear to wineries doesn’t really change much. It’s only the season and the weather that are most important to consider.

If you have booked a wine tour or tasting, be sure to read the basics of what to expect at your winery visit, plus all the outfit suggestions below!

The Basics: What to Expect at a Winery and How to Dress

When it comes to picking an outfit for visiting a winery, there are some basic considerations you should make, regardless of the season.

  • There is no official dress code at wineries. That being said, you still want to be practical and respectful. Keep your outfit classy and casual. No flip flops, and save the workout clothes for the gym.
  • Rural location: Wineries are often in rural locations. That means gravel and dirt roads and pathways. Keep your dress whites at home, unless you know you’re visiting a highly manicured property.
  • Vineyard Tour : If you’re doing a tour of the vineyard, you will walk through the vineyard, which is essentially a farm. Depending on the weather, this could include mud, dirt, plants, etc. Wearing white shoes is not advisable, and leave the stilettos at home.
  • No scents: Wine tasting requires you to smell the wine, and bringing scents into a winery is a big no-no. This includes strong perfume (ideally none at all), essential oils, strongly scented lotion, scented hand sanitizer, baby wipes, etc. If you can smell it, it will negatively affect the wine tasting experience for everyone in the room.
  • Winery Tours: Wineries can be messy operational facilities, especially during harvest. Grapes are being transported and crushes, juice is moved around, floor are hosed down and often wet. Wine cellars are fairly chilly as well. Even if you didn’t book a tour, prepare to tour one just in case and wear comfortable shoes that you aren’t going to be too precious about.
  • Wine Tasting Only: If you’re only going to be tasting wine inside a tasting room (at the winery or in a city tasting room), you can wear the same type of clothing you would wear to lunch at a restaurant. If you’re going to wine country, wine tastings are often done outside when the weather is nice.
  • Don’t forget sun protection: You might be outside for a bit, tasting, touring or both. Make sure to take sunscreen to protect yourself. Once you start tasting, you might forget! Alternatively, bring a sun hat.

Winery Outfit Ideas

Below are some specific suggestions for casual winery outfits by season. Wine tasting outfits are ultimately up to you and your style, but these are meant to give you some inspiration. Most wineries and wine tasting rooms are casual, so unless the winery has specifically sent dress code information, casual is a safe assumption.

What to Wear to a Winery in the Summer (Hot Weather)

There are lots of options when it comes to how to dress at a winery in the summer. First, check the weather for your wine country destination. Some wine regions may even require you to wear layers in the summer. Even if it doesn’t cool off outside at all, you might find yourself in a cold wine cellar for 20 minutes on a tour.

For example, a perfect wine tasting outfit for summer in Napa Valley or California wine country is probably a floral midi dress with comfortable sandals and a denim jacket for night when it cools off.

Outfits like flowy dresses, a crisp white t-shirt with a cute skirt or lightweight printed pants are perfect for summer in wine country.

You can wear sandals, just pick some that feel sturdy on uneven ground. You don’t want to be carried out of the vineyard after twisting an ankle!

For men, a collared shirt is always a good choice. In the summer, you can wear a short-sleeved button down or polo. Linen is a great summer fabric. A polo shirt or a long sleeve linen top (sleeves rolled) with chino pants or jeans are both good options for men to wear to a winery.

A button up top and jeans is a classic look for anyone. In summer, the shirt could be a crisp white poplin or linen shirt is most classic. The key is to look relaxed and casual though, not like you’re going to a stuffy office.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting in the Fall or Spring

If you are wearing jeans, consider pairing with a denim shirt in a similar color. This is a simple outfit but you will always look put together in it. If rain is in the forecast, layer a trench over it.

Ankle boots are fall staples and a flannel shacket is a good layer for fall. Temperatures can swing in the fall, so layers are key. A nice pair of work boots are a go-to shoe in fall for anyone.

Maxi dresses and light sweaters, and complimentary colors to the changing colors on the vines are great for photos in fall!

What to Wear to Wine Country in the Winter (Cold Weather)

In the winter, temps can vary based on location. As always, check the weather that week.

Not all wine regions are uncomfortably cold in winter. For instance, Sonoma County and most of California wine country is quite mild. A leather jacket over a maxi dress and a cute pair of ankle boots is a nice way to dress up for a winery in winter. Some days, you might not even need the jacket!

In contrast, if you’re headed to a wine region that gets snow, you’ll need to plan accordingly.

Some other popular outfit choices for women in winter are:

  • Warm sweater with jeans and ankle boots
  • Sweater dresses with tall or riding boots make a simple outfit.

Just remember, winter can also be more rainy in some destinations, so the ground might be muddy in areas. It’s not the time to wear your fresh white sneaks.

It’s also smart to bring a wool beanie for cold winter days. Black crewneck sweater, a nice pair of brown work boots, dark jeans, hat (ball cap or beanie). Classic look.

Wearing a Purse in Wine Country

If you plan to take a bag or purse, a crossbody purse is a good option to wear wine tasting. Something small that allows you to be hands free while wine tasting is what you’re after.

An alternative option would be a good solid leather or canvas tote bag, especially if you’re bringing the kids. You will want to bring some distractions, like books and [quiet] games.

Wearing White in Wine Country

Don’t be afraid to wear white in wine country. White dresses with pretty floral prints or white linen tops are perfect for summer. Beware you might end up sitting at a rustic picnic table outside with a red wine glass sitting on a not-so-flat surface. Get the picture? So, there is a level of risk wearing white. However, white looks sharp in summer and you only live once! If you’ll be worried the whole time, it’s safer to wear something else.

Wine Tasting Attire FAQ

What is wine country casual.

Wine country casual is a term used by some stylists to describe looks that seem relaxed yet still put-together, appropriate for the farm, but more dressy than if you were actually working on the farm.

What type of shoes should I wear to a winery?

The type of shoes you wear to a winery will depend on the outfit. The most important thing is that you wear shoes that are comfortable, since you might be doing a bit of walking. Remember, you might be walking through vineyards or touring a winemaking facility that has a wet floor.

Flat sandals or mid-heel sandals with thicker soles, sneakers, loafers, and boots are great. Really high heels are definitely a bad idea. Avoid flip flops as they look sloppy and aren’t great for walking through tall grass or gravel paths.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes, you can absolutely wear jeans. Overall, you want to wear casual clothing. In fact, it is one of the most popular choices for both men and women. Vineyards are a type of farm, and wineries can be messy operations during harvest. Consider something lighter than jeans in the summer, as it can be quite hot. For example, linen pants or shorts would be a great choice.

Final Thoughts

Whatever you decide to wear, don’t fret too much about it! After all, you’ll be in a nice winery setting tasting delicious wine and taking in the view with friends. It’ll be a great day no matter what you are wearing.

What To Wear in Wine Country

couples-packing-for-a-trip-to-wine-country

When it comes down to it, it’s most important to feel comfortable. You can’t go wrong with jeans, a nice shirt and attractively comfortable shoes. You don’t want to be carrying around a heavy purchase when getting in and out of the car at each winery. Nor do you want something cumbersome while taking in all the tastes of Wine Country. A small cross shoulder purse is the best bet. No need to shove bought bottles into your purse. If you’re with us there are always shipping options!

While wine country casual is always a hotly debated look around here there is no need to let style slip, including all you men out there! A nice pair of jeans, casual slip-ons and a button down creates a casual and put together style that would fit in any wine tasting room. Pack a dinner jacket for the cooler evenings and you’ll be good to go in any Napa and Sonoma restaurant, starred or not!

What to Wear to a Winery? Wine Tasting Attire For Any Season

What to Wear to a Winery? Wine Tasting Attire For Any Season

Are you planning a wine tasting trip? Wondering how you should dress? While it’s good to know your wine tasting etiquette — the all-important do’s and don’ts of wine tasting — it’s equally important to familiarize yourself with what’s appropriate to wear to a winery.

Keep reading to learn all there is to know about wine tasting attire and get tips for planning your outfit(s)!

Is There a Wine Tasting Dress Code?

If you’re trying to decide what to wear on a wine tasting adventure — especially if it’s your first time — you’re probably wondering if there are any strict rules you should follow. While there’s typically no agreed-upon dress code for tasting rooms and wineries, there are some unspoken rules we definitely recommend following.

Here are some tried and true guidelines for what to wear to a winery:

  • Skip the heavy fragrance: A big part of wine tasting is experiencing all the unique aromas, so keep the perfume and cologne to a minimum, for your own benefit and to be polite to other tasters.
  • Bring chapstick (not lipstick): Drinking wine all afternoon can make your lips dry and chapped, especially if you’re outside, so bring some moisturizing chapstick with you and skip the lipstick — after all, no one wants to leave lipstick marks all over their glass at a wine tasting.
  • Avoid wearing white IF you tend to spill: It’s a myth that you should never wear white in a tasting room, but it’s a good idea to wear darker colors or prints if you think you might spill.
  • Wear layers, regardless of the season: While the season will dictate what layers you wear (a heavier jacket and long pants or stockings in the winter vs. a light cardigan and a scarf in the summer), layers are always the way to go; they add class and style to your outfit and allow you to move between the tasting room, patio, and vineyards comfortably.

Dressy is Better Than Casual

Skip the leggings and flip flops! Even though many wine tasting events and wineries are fairly casual these days and don’t have specific rules you’re required to follow, it’s a good idea to put some thought into your attire in order to show respect and look your best. In other words, dress for the occasion.

That doesn’t mean you have to wear heels and a dress or a suit and tie. In fact, a nice floral dress and a pair of sandals or a pair of dark-wash jeans and a polo or dress shirt are all you need to look great and fit right in at most wineries. Just make sure you layer a blazer or a cute denim jacket if the weather calls for it!

Couple dressed business-casually and drinking wine

Aim for Low-Maintenance Comfort

Above all, prioritize your own comfort. Dressing for the occasion doesn’t mean you should wear shoes that hurt your toes or a tie and jacket that make you feel stuffy and overheated.

Wedges, sandals, or flats are often the way to go, especially if you plan on touring vineyards or visiting multiple wineries — and if you’re uncomfortable in a tie, don’t wear one. Especially in the summer, a nice short- or long-sleeved shirt tucked into a pair of dark-wash jeans with a belt is typically all you need.

On a Tour DeVine helicopter wine tour , you’ll be getting on and off a helicopter between wineries and often landing in fields near vineyards, so keep that in mind when it comes to footwear and loose flowing accessories like scarves or hats.

Here are a few tips for staying comfortable during a day of sipping wines and exploring vineyards, while still looking your best:

  • Opt for a hands-free or small purse.
  • Wear your hair up or out of your face.
  • Stick to comfortable shoes.
  • Pack a light jacket.
  • Skip heavy makeup, especially if it’s warm out.
  • Bring a pair of sunglasses.

What to Wear for Wine Tasting in Napa

by Green Dream Tours | Aug 1, 2020 | Tour Tidbits | 0 comments

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Napa

Our guests often ask us “What should I wear to my Napa wine tasting?” or “Is there a dress code for wine tasting?”

Don’t worry, there’s no dress code – but we have some tips to help make your wine tasting tour more comfortable.

Check out our photo gallery to help you decide what to wear wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma. *Note: These photos are of real guests on our real Wine Country tours, not stock photos.

Napa Wine Tasting Clothing Tips

#1: dress in layers.

Wear layers for wine tasting

That’s the first thing we tell guests when they ask us what to wear wine tasting in Napa and Sonoma. Weather in the San Francisco Bay Area can change within minutes, and there can be quite a contrast between mornings in The City and afternoons in Wine Country.

As Mark Twain has been quoted as saying, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”

The San Francisco fog is infamous. Sometimes, it’s almost like a miracle when you head north from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and find sunshine and warmth on  tours to Napa and Sonoma .

So start the day with a jacket or sweater even in the middle of summer. You can leave that layer in our secure  vehicle  as temperatures rise and wine warms the body. We promise your guide will keep your belongings safe while you’re enjoying a day in Wine Country.

#2: Dress Comfortably

Dress Comfortably for Napa

Our second suggestion is to dress comfortably. Napa and Sonoma definitely exemplify California’s laid-back lifestyle, especially when it comes to attire. Basically, there’s no dress code. However, we urge you to wear comfortable shoes since some walking is necessary especially during lunch and free time.

#3: Wear Something Fun

Wear something fun for wine tasting

Recommendation No. 3 is to wear something fun. Wine Country is fun so you’ll want to look good in the pictures you take during the best day of your vacation.

#4: Remember to Smile

Dress up or down

Dress up or down. Wine Country welcomes everyone no matter the attire. Just remember to wear a smile for all the amazing photos you’re going to take.

#5: Shorts, Jeans and T-Shirts are Ok

Shorts and Jeans are Okay

Shorts are definitely okay for men and women. Jeans and T-shirts are also cool. What you wear wine tasting really is up to you!

#6: Wear Sunglasses

Wear Sunglasses

We strongly suggest wearing sunglasses. There’s a good chance one or two tastings will be held outdoors weather permitting. You’ll also have free time for lunch and to walk around a Wine Country town, so sunglasses will come in handy.

#7: Wear Comfortable Shoes

Wear Comfortable Shoes

Please wear comfortable shoes. We’d hate for you to miss out on an extra pour in a vineyard while the wine server is telling the group about what makes their wine the best.

#8: Hats Come in Handy

Hats Come In Handy

Hats are certainly optional, but may come in handy during vineyard strolls or free time or lunch. Bonus points for couples with matching hats.

How to Dress For a Wine Tour

26 may 2023.

wine tour dress code

THE BEST OF BORDEAUX

When you’re looking forward to visiting Bordeaux’s beautiful châteaux, hearing the fascinating details about the wine production process, and tasting all the delicious wines… what to wear is probably not at the forefront of your mind! Generally speaking, although there’s no official dress code for visiting the region’s wineries, think casual chic, the kind of attire you’d wear for dinner at a nice restaurant. Don’t worry, we’ve compiled some top tips for you, so you can get the most out of your wine tours experiences. Here’s our head-to-toe guide: Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen (and Sun Hats) Bear in mind that although you’ll be visiting some indoor facilities, perhaps châteaux with grandiose interiors, and production facilities such as vat houses and wine cellars, plus tasting rooms, you’ll spend some time outdoors, in the vineyards, perhaps having a picnic lunch, so apply sun protection, wear a hat if you have one. What to Wear (and What Not to Wear) It’s advisable to wear something comfortable, yet stylish. A sundress, skirt and blouse, slacks or stylish jeans (no rips!). Short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts, polo shirts, together with chinos, slacks or stylish jeans. Wear layers, take a pullover or cardigan as it might be cold outside (depending on the time of year) or chilly in the wine cellars, so wear a blazer or sports coat, seasonal lightweight jacket or a raincoat. Women should bear in mind that if their tour includes visiting a church, it’s considered respectful to cover their shoulders, so put on that extra layer over a strappy sundress, or throw on a shawl.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll probably be doing a fair amount of walking, perhaps over uneven stone paving, or through the cobblestone streets of Saint-Émilion, which is a UN World Heritage Site. In some châteaux, you might be walking up and down steep stone steps to and from underground wine cellars, you might walk over uneven terrain through vineyards, and you might be standing for a while when tasting the wines. So sensible shoes are paramount. Forego your flip-flops, they’re fine for the beach, but not the countryside.

  • What to Wear at a Winery: A Wine Traveler’s Sip & Style Guide

by Nichole | Last updated Sep 28, 2023 | Wine Packing List

My husband and I have been to a lot of wine regions … 23 to be exact. We love wine vacations! Needless to say, I have had a lot of practice figuring out what to wear at a winery.   Here are my style tips on what to wear (and not to wear!) and many examples of my personal winery outfits to give you inspiration.

01- Smart Casual Outfits for All Seasons

Spring/summer winery outfits, fall/winter winery outfits, 02- wedges or flats, best summer shoe: cole haan anica sandal, best spring/fall shoe: rothy's pointed toe, best classic shoe: tory burch ballet flats, 03- crossbody purse, 04- layers, 05- comfortable clothing is key, 06- avoid white, 07- chapstick or long-wearing lipstick, 08- no perfume, 09- sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen, 10- sunglasses + cute sun hat, final thoughts, related content.

Douro Valley wine region in Portugal: wearing a flowy, floral dress from Amour Vert

Feminine, flowy dresses are my favorite outfit to throw on for a visit to a winery in the spring or summer.

I love the women-led brand Amour Vert.

I am wearing one of their red numbers in the photo above, which was taken at Quinta do Tedo in Douro Valley, Portugal.

Wearing a nautical sundress on a Santorini wine tour in Greece (yes, those are the vines behind us, which are intertwined into a bird’s nest shape to collect the morning dew).

Another one of my favorite places to find cute sundresses is Revolve.

So many cute choices, almost too many.

Central Otago wine region in New Zealand: wearing dark jeans, a brightly colored top, J.crew blazer, and Rothy’s pointed-toe flat.

For the fall, I love wearing Athleta’s Sculptek dark denim skinny jeans , a brightly-colored shirt and scarf, a blazer, and Rothy’s or Tory Burch ballet flats. The picture above was taken in the Central Otago wine region in New Zealand.

For the winter, I switch out the blazer for the long J.crew lady day coat and slip into super comfortable Nisolo booties  with a block heel.

I cannot emphasize this one enough! Wear cute flats or wedges.

Save your stilettos for the cocktail bar.

When you visit a winery, you may be walking outdoors checking out the soil in the vineyard as we did in Douro Valley, Portugal . Any heel is going to get stuck in that dirt.

Or you may be navigating steep steps in an ancient chalk cave in the Champagne region in France. I would have died if I was wearing heels.

Here are my three go-to winery shoes:

Burgundy wine tour in France: wearing Cole Haan Anica sandals

The Cole Haan Anica Sandals may be the most comfortable thong sandals I have ever owned. I have the nude and rose/gold metallic sandals, which go with basically anything.

I not only wear them at wineries but for travel in general. They worked perfectly for our recent wine tours in Champagne and Burgundy, France as shown in the photo above.

Perfect spring/fall winery shoe: Rothy’s Pointed Toe Flat

I am addicted to Rothy’s Pointed Toe Flats and own too many pairs that I care to admit.

They are super comfortable and you can throw them in the washer when they get dirty. There are so many fun colors to choose from.

I also love how a pointed toe can give the appearance of longer legs.

The Rothy’s are great for visiting a winery in the spring or fall. I wore them when we visited the Central Otago wine region in New Zealand, which you can see a little bit in this photo .

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine tour in South Africa: wearing Tory Burch ballet flats (being goofy and trying to be taller than my husband)

I love classic staple pieces.

The Tory Burch ballet flat is one of them.

They are not as comfortable as the Rothy’s or the Cole Haan Anica sandals, but they are still very comfortable and won’t kill your feet walking through a vineyard.

The Tory Burch ballet flats are a great spring/fall winery shoe. I wore them in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wine region in South Africa and in the Goriska Brda wine country in Slovenia.

Great way to elevate an outfit.

Champagne tour in France: wearing a crossbody purse

You will need both hands to do all of that sipping, so you will want to be hands-free.

I strongly recommend wearing a crossbody purse. That way you can move about freely without doing a juggling act with your wine glass.

Some of my favorites are the classic Burberry as seen in the photo above. I purchased this staple piece through Gilt, which offers great designer discounts.

Another one of my favorites that I take on our wine vacations is the Lo & Sons Pearl purse (seen in most of my photos across my body as a light grey strap).

The creator of Lo & Sons has an incredible story . I love supporting strong innovative women.

Yarra Valley wine region: layering up with a cardigan

The wine cellars can get quite cool.

Prepare by having a cardigan or light jacket ready just in case.

Cute options that I’ve worn include the Lilly Pulitzer denim jacket (surprisingly soft for a denim jacket!) or a preppy J.crew blazer.

I’ve also just worn a light cardigan like when we were in the Yarra Valley wine region in Australia as pictured above.

White House Black Market usually has some great cardigan options , which is what I’m wearing above.

With winemaker Primoz Lavrencic at Burja Estate in Slovenia: wearing Anatomie city slick jacket and Tory Burch flats

Another great layering option is the wrinkle-resistant, figure-flattering Anatomie city slick jacket.

I’ve taken this jacket on quite a few trips including on a recent wine tour in Goriska Brda, Slovenia as shown in the photo above.

This is a fantastic layering jacket and travel jacket in general!

What to wear at a winery in Douro Valley, Portugal: comfortable black shift dress with lace trim

After a few glasses of wine, you will be thankful you saved that cute romper to wear for another day.

Avoid outfits that are too fussy with a million buttons or those that take 10 minutes to take off to use the restroom.

Comfort is king.

I purchased this super comfortable black shift dress with lace trim through Lulus (pictured above), which is no longer available. However, Amazon has quite a few comparable dresses.

Some blogs will tell you it’s ok to throw those cute white jeans on if you’re not a “spiller.”

However, in my opinion, even if you are super careful, inevitability the person beside you may not be. And despite your best intentions, that lovely glass of pinot noir may find its way onto your lap.

If you do end up with a wine stain, try out some Wine Away Stain Remover . Never actually had to use it, but it’s highly rated and has been featured in Food & Wine, Today Show, Washington Post, and many others.

You will be doing a lot of tastings, so either throw on a little Aquaphor lip ointment or wear a long-wearing lipstick that’s not going to transfer.

One of my favorites is Pat McGrath’s LiquiLUST matte lipstick .

You will be doing quite a bit of sniffing. If you are doused in perfume, you will not be able to smell what you are drinking (and neither will those around you!).

Skip it and save it for dinner.

Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen

If you go to a winery you will likely be walking around the vineyard and maybe even doing your tasting outdoors. Wear sunscreen!

I’m a little bit of a skincare diva.

Keep that skin beautiful and free of wrinkles and brown spots.

My absolute favorite is Elta MD UV Clear sunscreen.

Champagne wine tour in France: wearing my Ray Ban aviators

I love classic pieces, so my go-to sunglasses are my Ray Ban aviators as pictured above.

No squinting! I’m avoiding those crow’s feet as long as I can.

A cute hat is another great way to protect that gorgeous skin of yours while sauntering through the vineyards.

My favorite is the wide-brimmed J.crew hat .

We love checking out the wine regions in the countries we visit. From fancy estates to visiting winemakers in their garages, we have enjoyed experiencing it all.

If you are like me, I always stress about what to wear and want to make sure I dress appropriately for the occasion. I hope these tips help you as you come up with your own cute winery outfit.

What to Wear Wine Tasting in Italy, 5 Tour Guide Tips

Wondering what to wear to your first wine tasting? Leave the high heels, perfume, and neckties at home. Opt for business casual attire and avoid white clothes when tasting red wine. Our wine-tasting guide includes expert advice from Wine Tour company owners on what to wear to a wine tasting. Plus wine-tasting etiquette tips from Wine Tour guides.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting

In order to answer common questions about wine-tasting etiquette in America, I interviewed the experts. Four wine tour guides weigh in on wine-tasting etiquette. From what to wear to a wine tasting, to sipping out or dumping wine after you’ve tasted it.

Our contributors:

  • Editors Note: This post was originally created in 2017. However, since that time we lost Fred to cancer. In his honor, I’ve updated the post with a link to a beautiful tribute article to Fred Gunton.

  • Jack Cranley, Owner Backcountry Wine Tours
  • Stefan Czarnecki, Owner of Black Tie Tours

Tour Guides Tips on Dressing for a Wine Tasting

Here are the answers to the most common wine tasting questions they get starting with what to wear to a wine tasting.

“Here in Oregon, we’re farmers so there is no pretension. You want to be respectful but casual and comfortable is fine. For men, something like a polo or a button-down shirt is just fine. Ladies typically underdress. Keep in mind, if you’re going into a barrel tasting the temperature can vary from 55° to 95° back outside. Plus it rains a lot in Oregon, so come dressed in layers.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

“I would advise, you not to wear white. People are going to be pouring, swirling, and sipping wine all day, wine could splash. Also, leave the heels at home. We go into the vineyards and they [heels] just doesn’t work.” — Jack Cranley

“Perfume and cologne, don’t do it. A large part of the wine tasting experience is about smelling. So don’t cheat yourself or the person next to you, out of the full experience. Also, this is a funny one but don’t wear lipstick. It’s really hard for the tasting room folks to get off the glasses. If you’re going to wear it consider applying it lightly. —Jack Cranley

Wine Tasting Around the World

Nothing ruins a romantic vineyard picnic faster than an aggressive swarm of Yellow Jackets. They are common in late summer and fall in the Willamette Wine Valley. That and finding out after you get to the vineyard that they allow picnics. Oops.

Regional quirks in wine country etiquette can vary around the world. Take tasting fees. In Haro, Spain, a Bodegas Muga winery tour plus tasting is 10€. While in Napa, a seated portfolio tasting at Duckhorn runs $35. Wine tasting in Piedmont, Italy, where Barolo is king? Surprisingly there are not many tasting fees. However, some Italians consider it rude not to buy a least one bottle of wine at a tasting.

These regional variations make it hard to know what to expect from a wine-tasting tour. Doubly so if it’s your first time.

5 Tips on What to Wear Wine Tasting

I’ve attended wine tastings for over a decade in France, Spain, Italy, California, Oregon, Washington, and even Michigan! Here are five tips I stand by when dressing for a wine tasting anywhere in the world.

  • Wear layers. Because wine tastings often are paired with wine tours, you’ll swing from warm, sunny days to dark, cold cellars in one afternoon. Consequently, depending on the season a scarf or lightweight jacket is a must.
  • Wear sturdy shoes. For the same reason as layers. Stilletos don’t transition well from tasting room to cellar steps to rocky vineyards. Thus it’s important to wear shoes you could move comfortably and confidently in.
  • Business casual rules the day for the simple reason that you’ll likely be around other people who are dressed similarly.
  • Ditch lipstick. The experience of wine tasting involves glassware and your sense of taste. Neither of which needs to be covered by lipstick.
  • Have pockets or a small purse because inevitably you’ll either pick up a brochure or want to take tasting notes along the way. However, once you head to the cellar, start tasting wine, or walk through the vineyard, you’ll want to be hands-free.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting Video Playlist

First of all, for those going to their first wine tasting, there are a few basic wine tasting 101 etiquette tips that work at all wineries.

Wine Tasting Etiquette Tips from the Pros

Secondly, listen to what Stefan had to say. “People who know their limits are respected more. Respect the power of alcohol.”

Additionally, Mark noted, “When you drink your blood sugar level rises, so make sure to eat food along the way.”

Furthermore, Helen contributed a similar sentiment. “Drink plenty of water, I tell people there are bathrooms everywhere we go!”

Similarly, Stefan said “Never assume it’s okay to bring your own food into a tasting room or to a winery. Always call ahead and ask.” — Stefan Czarnecki

Perhaps the golden rule that matters most.

“All you really need to know is, do you like it?”— Fred Gunton

With a few of the classic wine tasting etiquette 101 tips out of the way, it’s time to focus specifically on the Willamette Wine Valley in Oregon. Even though the Willamette Valley is quickly becoming one of the most exciting wine regions in the world, it’s still laid-back, friendly, and accessible.

Don’t Worry About What You Don’t Know About Wine

“Oregon is fairly casual. It has always been pretty laid-back since the late 60s when Hippies started organic wine here. Biodynamics, viticulture by the phases of the moon. It’s still part of Oregon today.  In general, the places here are very accessible and friendly. People are super willing to share their knowledge. In Oregon, it’s not uncommon to get a wine tasting with the winemaker or winery owners. They are open to answering questions no matter how detailed. It’s not a matter of saving secrets it’s more about knowledge share. There’s very much a philosophy of all ships rise. So why not help the other guy.” — Jack Cranley

“We have a great community here. The people in tasting rooms here live in and have tasted wine all over the valley, so they are happy to connect you with their friends.” — Stefan Czarnecki

“There are a lot of people who are nervous about their lack of knowledge. Think of it this way. Compare wine tasting to beer tasting and you realize that worry is gone. I say, think of wine as food in a bottle.” — Fred Gunton

“It never fails, the guy who comes in saying he has the most knowledge about wine walks away gaining the least at the end of the day. Come in with a beginners mind and you’ll get more out of it.” —Jack Cranley

Don’t Assume Food is Provided, Ask

“Larger groups especially tend to forget to factor in gratuity, tasting fees, and lunch. If you’re not sure, ask.” — Stefan Czarnecki

“A lot of people seem surprised to find out that the majority of wineries do not offer food in Oregon. So make sure you have a good breakfast to start your day. We break our tours up. Typically, two locations in the morning and then a break for lunch and two in the afternoon.” — Jack Cranley

Tasting Fees

The average tasting room fee in the Willamette Valley is between $10 and $25. From large groups to private tours, here are tips on what to expect.

“Tasting fees are never collected upfront since they are often waived with a minimum purchase of around $50.” — Jack Cranley

“Larger groups often assume tasting fees will be waived automatically but it’s actually the opposite. Many smaller tasting rooms have to bring in extra staff to handle larger groups.” — Stefan Czarnecki

“We never include the tasting fees in our tour pricing. Our private tours with the winemakers or owner might have a $50 tasting fee or a minimum purchase depending on where we go.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

In other words, if the budget for a wine-tasting experience matters, it’s always best to ask for tasting fees or minimum purchases upfront.

If all the tasting fees have you worried, there is an insider trick our experts shared to keep the money in the bottle, so to speak.

Save Money & Share a Tasting

“Sharing a tasting is always an option, especially if you want to go to between four and six places. So never hesitate to ask to share a tasting.” — Jack Cranley

“Wine tasting is not about offending anyone. You don’t need a full pour to taste the wine. You can either dump, spit or you can share a tasting.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

Speaking of spitting.

Sip, Spit & Dump Wine Tasting Etiquette

Even for those with a few wine tastings under their belt, both spitting and dumping wine remain an open issue. Here are a few tips from the expert to help make that split-second decision with confidence.

“In a typical 2-ounce pour there are three good sips. Always say yes, and please always try it. That first sip, if you don’t like the taste, dump it. Only take a second sip if you’re interested in the wine. Spit when you’re done tasting it. Don’t feel you have to finish the pour.” — Fred Gunton, Owner A Nose For Wine Tours

Editor’s Note: Fred and I had a follow-up conversation after this article was initially published. He gave a little more insight on wine tasting I simply had to share! “ You can’t recognize something you’ve never tasted before. So where the first sip you might determine objectionably, it may be more of a case of being unfamiliar with the taste of the varietal.

The second sip in this case will allow you to more clearly evaluate what you’re tasting. And of course, after you do swallow, the retronasal aroma will be a much better aid in your evaluation of the wine.” This, by the way, is the type of information that firmly places me in the camp of a fan of wine tours owners who know their stuff. When going tasting for the first time, if you have the help of someone who knows wine, you get a true chance to understand and appreciate wine tasting.”

Fred Gunton is definitely someone I’m looking forward to learning more from myself.

Don’t Ask for a Small Pour

“Don’t ask for a small pour. Let the tasting room staff do their job. There is a reason they pour out what they do. While tasting only takes half an ounce, it takes more than that to get the full sensory experience. To properly smell and taste the wine. Taking more into your mouth and swishing it around gives you the best mouthfeel and enables you to explore the tannins. It’s the only way to give your glands a chance to react to the acidity.

Now, just because they pour you more doesn’t mean that you have to swallow it. There is an argument for spitting. Those spit buckets are not there for decoration. No one will look at you funny if you quietly and casually spit. There is, of course, a finesse to spitting. Don’t spit it out with force. Don’t lean over the counter and spit into the bucket. Pick up the bucket and quietly, casually, spit.” — Jack Cranley

To further illustrate the point, Helen and Mark weighed in saying “Not enough people spit! You get a one-ounce pour, you really don’t need that much to taste the wine. It’s really not about offending anyone. On our tours, we can visit four of five stops in a day. If you’re not spitting or dumping you’ll lose your palate before the last stop.”

Palate Fatigue & Wine Tasting

For those new to wine tasting palate fatigue is basically the point of no return. Taste buds are exhausted and the ability to detect distinctions between wines is lost.

“Palate fatigue is a real thing. Wine tasting takes a mental shift for the day, this is not wine drinking. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Tasting tours start early around 10:00 and go to 5:00. You still have the whole evening to spend drinking.” — Jack Cranley

What are the signs of palate fatigue?

“A fuzzy tongue, dry mouth-feel. When you hit palate fatigue you’re done. Time is the only thing that will bring the palate back. It takes almost a full day.” —  Mark Treick

The key with palate fatigue is to stop before you get there. So what can you do to prevent or delay palate fatigue?

To illustrate the point, here is what Fred had to say about palate fatigue during wine tasting.

“Not everyone fatigues at the same rate. Eat a little, make sure to drink lots of water, and space it out to give your palate a rest. Have lunch. Keep in mind this is wine tasting, not wine drinking. Go ahead take two sips, make your notes and move onto the next wine and revisit those you are most interested in.” — Fred Gunton

Tipping on Wine Tours

“For your transportation company, plan on 15%. More if you’re happy with the tour and want to show your appreciation. Gratuity at wineries is never expected but if you think your experience was great, it’s a way to reward someone for a good job.” — Stefan Czarnecki

Furthermore, here is what Helen and Mark had to say about tipping on wine tours.

“In larger open tasting rooms, if you feel someone has gone out of their way to give you a good experience and you want to say thanks, go ahead, give them $5. For smaller sit-down tasting rooms, if you’re happy with the service, figure 15% to 20% of the tasting fee. On a tour where you’re sitting down with the owner or winemaker, a tip is not expected. As guides we like tips, but we never expect them either.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

Wine Tasting Room Closing Times

“Tasting rooms are typically open till 5:00 but don’t show up right before. Be there by 4:30 at least. A wine tasting can take between 30 and 45 minutes.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

Now, for the best part, the character of the Willamette Wine Valley and how that affects wine tasting in the region.

In Conclusion, Wine Tasting is About You Too

In 2016, Willamette Valley was named Wine Region of the Year  by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. It should not go unsaid that the ability to taste some of the world’s best Pinot Noirs in such an unpretentious environment is part of what sets the Willamette Wine Valley apart.

There is a lot of knowledge in the Willamette Wine valley . For those lucky enough to take a tasting tour, tapping into that knowledge is easy and fun. For that reason, I’ll close today with a few more words of advice from the local experts.

“In Oregon, the important thing is to find the right guide for you. Ask yourself do you want to buy wine or do you want to go deep. If you want to wrap yourself around a glass of wine at a vineyard you can do that. If you want to find a little place where the wine owner is in the tasting room, you can do that too.” — Helen Avery & Mark Treick

Similarly, Fred Gunton said “We are here to relax people and help them learn consciously so they can apply that new knowledge subconsciously. There’s really nothing incorrect about wine tasting. If you smell it and vocalize it, you can’t be wrong.”

Special thanks to Fred, Helen, Mark, Jack, and Stefan for lending your time and expertise to this article.

We’ll be glad to talk a little longer: writing each other, on zoom or are you thinking to visit Chianti ?

We loved this post:as Italians living in a wine production area, with a grandfather who produced wine, we had never thought of all of this.We will share with our guests.Thank you!

Very happy it was of interest Would love to hear more about your story if you care to share!

Hi Brandy! I live in Oregon wine country so this was a fun read…so are all these tips common to Italy? Ciao! Valerie

Hi Valerie! I sure do miss that beautiful corner of the world. The comments from the wine tour guides about what to wear as well as dumping wine definitely apply to Italy as well. The one exception is I have yet to see anyone spit wine out in Italy. I’m actually working to line up wine tour wine interviews here locally in Italy, France and Spain to get their expert opinions included here. Please enjoy a Pinot Noir for me! Those are not so easy to find over here in Italy.

Agree with all of this! I did a wine tasting in Napa once and I had an interesting convo with the sommelier. She could tell I knew about wine by the way I described something to my Mum. I also love Gary Vaynerchuk’s content about wine!

Do you know I’ve never listened to what Gary has to say about wine 😂 Where should I start?

I appreciate how you said that even for people who have participated in a few wine tastings, spitting and dumping wine are still taboo topics. This post was just what I needed because I’m so excited to go on a private wine tour with my girlfriends. These wine tour etiquette suggestions will be really useful, and I appreciate your help.

I hope you have a wonderful time! If you have time I’d love to hear how it went and what the comfort level was for folks about sipping and dumping!

Wine o'clock: what to wear to a wine tasting.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting: Banana Republic Floral Fit and Flare Dress

There are very few reasons to look forward to the month of August. It’s known for being humid, for forcing kids to go back to school, and for being a distant three-and-a-half months away from Christmas. However , if you’re a wino, it marks the beginning of harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, it’s party time at vineyards across the country. The looming question most women ask themselves (and Google) is what to wear to a wine tasting or a vineyard tour. Although exact dress codes may vary per location, I styled this blue floral fit-and-flare dress  and my new pair of yellow gold pearl stud earrings for just the occasion. Kyle took me to a fancy dinner at Les Bourgeois Vineyards  in Columbia, Missouri a few weeks back, and I’ve gotta admit– I made a huge wardrobe faux pas. Keep reading for details.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting: The Basics

First and foremost, the best solution to the  what to wear to a wine tasting dilemma (even in renown vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Valley) is to dress for comfort. That being said, the weather is probably the largest contributing factor of comfort. Unless the property is currently reserved for a wedding or fancy event, it’s rare that a vineyard will deny access for inappropriate dress. If you’re going to be taking a vineyard tour, note that they’re often cool and damp. Wear close-toed shoes and bring layers in case you got too cold or too warm. An easy way to ensure you’re appropriately dressed is to call the vineyard directly and ask if there is a formal dress code for any of the activities on your agenda.

For my particular situation, Kyle and I were heading to dinner at the Blufftop Bistro after our casual wine tasting. I wanted to wear something a little fancier, since most vineyard restaurants do have some kind of dress code. As for my aforementioned wardrobe faux pas, I wore crisp white perforated heels to dinner… and for these vineyard photos, which was one big, giant, and dirty mistake. I also brought a pair of ballet flats (and a wide-brimmed sun hat) for the tour and the tasting, and I highly recommend y’all do the same! Otherwise, your clean heels will turn into dirty grass-embellished water containers. If you don’t have any close-toed ballet flats– or if you have your heart set of wearing heels, espadrilles and wedges work fine, too. They just make it a little more difficult to comfortably traverse the vineyard.

What to Wear to a Wine Tasting: Accessories

Again, there isn’t usually a formal dress code unless specified by the vineyard or specific restaurants themselves. So, when it comes to appropriate accessories, you can and should wear whatever is most comfortable. I’d personally advise against heavy statement necklaces, chandelier earrings, and big tote bags. They’re just bulky. Opt for classic easy-to-wear pieces that won’t tarnish from sweat or the sun (I’ve included my favorite Michael Hill pieces under $150 below). On particularly warm days, it’s widely recommended that you bring a brimmed sun hat or baseball cap, sunglasses, an easy-to-carry clutch or small crossbody bag, and some simple pieces of jewelry, like a small pendant necklace and pearl stud earrings.

  So, to recap–

DO’s: Dress comfortably. Wear closed-toed shoes. Bring layers. Bring a hat and sunglasses. Wear simple jewelry. Check with the vineyard directly for a formal wine tasting/vineyard tour/dinner dress code.

DON’Ts: Wear heels or sandals. Bring a huge tote bag. Forget your camera! 🙂

Such a darling dress, perfect for a wine tasting!

Great outfit and pictures 😉

https://4highheelsfans.wordpress.com/2017/08/09/tuscany-pisa/

I really like that you mention the importance of comfort. It makes sense that wine tasting can be very fun but also exhausting if you’re overdressed. This is something to mention to my wife because if we’re going to be visiting a vineyard for tasting, a dress like the one you have pictured could be a great option because it’d look nice but wouldn’t get too hot or uncomfortable throughout the day.

Such a fun dress for a day with the girls!

I’ve never been to a wine tasting or a vineyard, but it’s on my list of things to do! I love your sunglasses, they’re such a fun and classic shape.

What a brilliant idea! I love your style and your tips what to wear on wine tasting!

Beautiful dress! I’ve definitely made the mistake of wearing heels to an outdoor venue and immediately regretting it, haha!

This is such a classic and gorgeous look! I love that blue. These are great tips.

My family lives in Napa Valley so I get the pleasure of going wine tasting with them all the time! I like to throw on a cute sundress with wedges or flats, and if it’s a little cooler a cozy sweater or cute jacket. Love your wine tasting look, you are totally pulled together but not overdressed <3

Wine tasting is so much fun and I think your outfit is perfect. I agree on not wearing heels, at least if you’re going to be touring the vineyard. Hope you were able to save yours!

Your look is so classy! I love it! And your dress is beautiful. 🙂

I went to a couple of wineries this past weekend so this post was perfectly timed! I feel like a hat is the perfect accessory for wine tastings! I agree on the heels!! I always want to wear them but I end up talking myself out of it!

I love these tips! I’d love to go to a vineyard and for a wine tasting!

Tuscany Tour Time by Angela

What to Wear on a Wine Tour

So, you’ve booked your wine tour, and chances are you are really excited! Now, the big question: what do I wear on a wine tour? You’ll get to spend the day enjoying the beautiful sights, smells and tastes of the idyllic Tuscan countryside. As well as learn a lot about the incredible products this land has to offers its natives and visitors alike. However, depending on the time of year for your visit to Tuscany, you might want to make some careful considerations regarding how you pack and prepare to dress for your tour.

First, what time of year did you book your tour for? While people always imagine Italy as warm and sunny, part of what gives it its vast agricultural appeal is the variable climate throughout the peninsula. In Tuscany, for example, weather varies considerably depending on what time of year you plan to visit . Know that in the Spring and Fall it tends to rain quite a bit , so although you will surely get some sunshine and beautiful views, remember those hills are so green for a reason! Be sure to pack an umbrella if, and to check the forecast before you head out. Frequently the weather changes hourly, so again you’ll want to remember to wear layers . If you are going on your tour during the high season, or summer months, then you will want to dress appropriately. Again, layers are key, as some wine cellars will remain cool and provide a stark contrast to the hot, humid weather outside. Bring a light jacket just in case!

Comfy is always better

Next, you want to look cute, but also be practical . Wine touring is a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of work. You’ll be walking a lot, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. You’ll also probably be climbing stairs, so just bare that in mind. You may also get to visit a church on occasion, so if you head out with bare shoulders or short shorts, remember that you might be asked to cover up. It’s unlikely, but you never know. It’s the worst when you stumble upon a small gem of a town and can’t go in the church to see the Renaissance masterpieces hiding inside!

Light is key!

Another tip is to dress light! Meaning, don’t load yourself with a large backpack or bags that you’ll have to lug around. Unless you need to carry a diaper bag, you’re going to want to keep your accessories to a minimum. There is less of a chance of something getting left behind (remember, you’re going to be drinking wine), and you’ll be able to move around more freely. In a general sense, try to keep it simple . You’re going to spend an enjoyable day out in the countryside, and you may even be asked to help a winemaker out unexpectedly! This is not the day to wear the best dress you brought to Tuscany . Think practical and casual. You’ll be meeting people who work on farms for a living and they don’t expect you to feel the need to impress them. Just be sure you learn about the wine and buy some bottles to bring home!

You might get stained

Last, you don’t want to wear your best because there is always the likelihood that you might get spilled on ! While wine tasting is an elegant endeavor, in Tuscany we tend to do things a little more on the rustic side. A wine tour is more than just a tasting – it’s an opportunity to explore the terrain, meet the people, and really walk through history as you learn about the wines you are going to experience. Definitely make sure to dress comfortably and above all not to stress about how you look. You are going to learn something and have a good time! The most important accessory will be a corkscrew for when you get back to your hotel or villa!

wine tour dress code

Wedding dress codes have never been weirder. Let’s decode them.

Carolyn Brown wants to be one-upped by her wedding guests.

Brown and her fiancé, both lawyers in Austin, opted for an “upstage the bride” dress code for their October wedding. “I want people to be way more dressy than I am,” she says. “I want feathers and sequins and for people to go all out.” The sartorial decision came about in part because Brown doesn’t want to stress about what people are wearing or police their apparel.

Such a dress code might be less stress for the bride, but what about for the guests? Brown’s concept is part of a larger trend of couples opting for less traditional, more specialized dress codes, including some absolute head-scratchers. Alan David Horowitz, owner of Alan David Custom, which specializes in bespoke suits, says that work attire requests have taken a back seat to wedding apparel, and he’s constantly receiving “crazy requests” — Horowitz recently made a custom suit for one client’s marijuana-themed wedding.

Plus-size fashion influencer Sean Taylor had two wedding events with unusual dress codes: Vegas vibes (guests dressed like Elvis, Dolly Parton, and members of “The Sopranos”) and the increasingly popular “Bridgerton” (a loose interpretation of the show’s already loose interpretation of Regency-era fashion).

Taylor included a QR code on her invitations that led guests to a Pinterest board with pictures, colors, words and clothing brands to help people understand the aesthetic. For invitations with a high-concept dress code but no accompanying mood board, guests needn’t panic — a custom code doesn’t necessarily mean eccentric. Many modern dress codes are rooted in the traditional and come down to small twists like color palette, which add to the atmosphere of the event. Sometimes that wacky dress code is even giving you practical information: “Mountain chic” reminds guests that terrain is rocky (think of your footwear!) and higher elevation is cool.

There’s plenty of overlap and not necessarily a lot of hard rules around the new wedding dress codes. Let us help you decode the vibes.

Wine formal

Formalwear still calls for tuxedos and evening dresses, but for an event at a winery, think of your feet first. “You’re going to be stepping on some uneven ground,” says Kerilynn Vigneau, image consultant, wardrobe stylist and owner of KLV Styling. That means low heels and wedges, not stilettos.

Guests should play with color and patterns. Instead of a black tuxedo, men can try burgundy or navy, Vigneau says. Women can incorporate florals or choose a jumpsuit with a low heel. Shades of purple, green, taupe or brown will compliment the natural scenery rather than compete with it.

Mountain chic

Any dress code with “mountain” in it is a call to consider fabrics carefully and practically. In cooler months, mountain formal means heavy fabrics and accessories, like faux fur and wraps. Guests can also reach for the Black Watch plaid , velvet or florals against a darker background.

The color story should complement the environment, including shades of green, blue, brown and neutrals.

Desert formal

Any desert apparel needs to be breathable. Vigneau says she pushes both men and women toward lighter-weight fabrics and flowy designs for women — “something lightweight that you don’t feel like you’re going to be sweating to death in.”

Even if a desert event is designated as “formal,” Horowitz recommends not going with a tuxedo or a dark suit. Instead, he suggests a short-sleeve linen suit. For a desert wedding, Horowitz once made a short sleeve suit with matching shorts.

Remember that a desert climate can change rapidly once night falls. Guests should consider a shawl, wrap or even a cape.

Beach formal

Similar to a desert formal, Horowitz recommends skipping the tuxedo or dark suit. Instead, guests should dress in light colors in spring or summer fabrics. That can mean cotton, silk, or a silk and wool blend. He also recommends suit jackets with either no lining or half lining.

A beach formal approach can also depend on if the wedding is taking place on the East or West coast, Vigneau said. West Coast tends to be more relaxed, with flowy dresses and perhaps a dressy sandal. East Coast leans preppier, meaning people should stay away from sandals and guys should opt for something like a loafer.

Garden party chic

Think dressy prints and fun textures “that aren’t necessarily considered ball gown or eveningwear,” says Sarah Kazemburg of Sarah Kazemburg Events & Styling. It’s elevated, but guests should lean into the theme with florals and patterns. Men can go with lighter suits, brightly colored pocket squares or floral ties. The location and time of day can help inform the level of formality, though “when in doubt, err on the side of being more formal than too casual,” Kazemburg says. “You don’t want to show up underdressed and not rise to the level of all the effort they are putting in for the wedding.”

Not to be confused with “festival” clothing, a festive dress code is basically a more fun version of cocktail attire — attendees can show off parts of their personal style. Think bright colors, patterns, velvet suits, jumpsuits, shorter dresses, sequins and sparkles. The overall look may include a bold accessory like a statement necklace, cocktail ring or brightly colored tie.

California cocktail

This is traditional cocktail with the small distinction of being a little more colorful and relaxed. Suits and cocktail dresses are still worn, but think lighter fabrics and less-formal cuts. Color, pattern and texture are all allowed, as long as the overall look is put together.

Barn or farmhouse chic

A barn or farmhouse wedding calls for attire on the casual side. Guests can wear long dresses or sundresses with sandals. A dressier choice can be a pattern shirt or a fun pocket square. Cowboy boots make for perfect footwear for male and female guests, but some attendees may opt for loafers. Fabrics should be on the lighter side, including cottons or satin.
