A celebration of Korean culture in NYC based on the hit Netflix series

NEW YORK , Oct. 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- On October 26 , the Korea Tourism Organization's New York Office hosted "Korea Tour with Squid Games in New York ." The six-hour event started at noon and took place at Studio 525 in Manhattan , complete with Korean games as seen on the popular Netflix series "Squid Game."

"Squid Game" is a South Korean fictional drama series revolving around a life-and-death contest involving 456 heavily-indebted players competing for a massive cash prize. The show has received universal and critical acclaim and became one of Netflix's most-watched programs in several markets within a week of its release.

Out of 3,115 applicants, 80 were randomly selected to participate in the Korea Tourism Organization's Squid Games event. To qualify, applicants had to be 18 years or older and fully vaccination. The winnings did not include a multi-million dollar cash prize as in the show, but the participants were dressed in the trademark green tracksuits and competed in games which included " Red Light , Green Light" and the "Ddakji Game" for prizes ranging from Apple Watch 7s to a round-trip ticket to Korea. The Grand Prize airline ticket to Korea was won by Charles Torres .

Park Jae -seok, executive director of the Korea Tourism Organization, New York Branch, said, "During the application process, over 3,000 people applied in one week, and I realized the popularity of the "Squid Game" in the United States . This event created an avenue to increase the interest of Korean tourism, at a time when curiosity of Korean culture reached its peak as a result the "Squid Game."

In addition to competing, the participants had an opportunity to experience a taste of Korean Culture as they visited Manhattan's Korean-inspired sites. The first site was a visit to the Arts of Korea gallery (233) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Established in 1998, the gallery displays, on a rotating basis, prominent pieces of Korean culture and art, including ceramics, paintings, sculptures, and textiles dating as far back as the fourth century B.C.

This was followed by a visit to the Korean Cultural Center New York, a government institution inaugurated in 1979 to promote Korean culture and aesthetics in New York City via cultural and artistic activities. They are known for their gallery exhibitions, performing arts concerts, and film festivals in addition to their various educational programs.

To further promote other areas of Korean culture, additional tour locations included the Line Friends Store in Times Square and H-Mart. The games concluded in Koreatown, affectionately known as K-Town, in Manhattan . Centered on 32nd Street between Madison Avenue and Broadway, the ethnic Korean enclave has emerged as an international economic outpost in Midtown NYC.

We're Down For MAINTENANCE

This page is undergoing maintenance and will be back soon.

I survived Netflix's 'Squid Game' challenge in LA and some of the games are just as stressful as the show makes them look

  • Netflix is hosting a "Squid Game" experience in LA where fans can compete in show-inspired games.
  • I tried the competition, playing through larger-than-life replicas of Battleship and Operation.
  • I failed the first trial but won Red Light, Green Light, which is as stressful as it looks on TV.

Insider Today

When Netflix announced a "Squid Game" experience was coming to Los Angeles in December, I was ready to throw my hat in the ring.

" Squid Game: The Trials, " which runs through early January, invites people over the age of 13 to try their luck at six competitions inspired by the hit 2021 South Korean drama and its accompanying reality series, " Squid Game: The Challenge. "

But unlike in either show, no cash prize awaits players here. Instead, people pay to play with tickets starting at $39 and going up to $99 in a building on the CBS Television lot.

I previewed the event ahead of its December 6 opening in late November. I had no idea what to expect or how rigorous the challenges would be, but I consider myself to be in decent shape as I go running a few times a week, so I figured I'd be OK.

Though I embarrassed myself right out of the gate, I was happy with my performance by the end of the nearly 70-minute competition, conquering two of the show's classic games.

Ahead of the challenge, I got a quick behind-the-scenes tour to take photos of the space.

squid games tour

Even though I knew all of the obstacles beforehand, it didn't help me out much.

Sadly, I didn't get to wear a cool tracksuit with a number while competing.

squid games tour

Creepy, masked "Squid Game" workers welcomed me when I arrived. I was hoping they'd have everyone wear the same tracksuit from the show, which features a unique number for each player, but that didn't happen. (Tracksuits were available for purchase, though.)

Instead, I was told in advance to wear comfortable clothes. I opted for a lightweight outfit that included capri leggings, a slightly loose T-shirt, and my running sneakers. I also brought a zip-up jacket in case it was cold.

I also had hair ties with me to pull back my hair. I didn't want to risk loose clothing or flyaway strands slipping me up if given the chance to play the show's famous Red Light, Green Light game .

Instead of a tracksuit, I received a bracelet before the competition.

squid games tour

At check-in, I received a bracelet with a star and the number 366 on it. I noticed some bracelets contained other shapes and was told they denoted your group.

My shape would be called a little bit before my challenge time at 7:30 p.m. Each group had about 30 players.

I waited until game time in the lobby where contestants could buy Korean-inspired food and exclusive merchandise.

At 7:30 p.m., we entered through a sliding door and learned we'd play with a VIP.

squid games tour

We gathered beyond the door to watch a trailer for the finale of "Squid Game: The Challenge" and learned that TJ Stukes, aka Player 182 in the reality TV competition, would play alongside us.

I made a mental note to try and stick by him for any team challenges.

We then had our photos taken just like on "Squid Game."

squid games tour

We entered a massive hallway with a bunch of monitors lined up where we were asked to scan a barcode on our bracelets, enter our full names, and take a photo.

The monitor wished me luck before the next person took my place.

We were ushered into a mini replica of the show's barracks to hear the rules.

squid games tour

There were 31 photos placed on a leaderboard. My group and I were told we'd get a chance to play a maximum of six games, but if we lost the first few games, we wouldn't be eliminated like on the shows.

Instead, the bracelets awarded us points for each round depending on how well we performed. The better we did, the more points we'd accumulate.

The player with the most points at the end of six games would be crowned the winner and could enter a VIP lounge that would otherwise cost extra to access.

I blew the first competition, modeled after the bridge game, Glass Stepping Stones.

squid games tour

The first challenge was inspired by one of the games late in "Squid Game." In the show, players are placed high above the ground and have to guess which of the two side-by-side glass tiles is sturdy. Guess wrong and you'd plummet to your death.

Obviously, no one was going to actually fall here. There were eight rows of "bridges" which consisted of 12 flat squares each.

We weren't given the rules until we decided the order of play, so, understandably, the majority of people lingered toward the back when we saw the game. On the show, you have a better chance of crossing the bridge if you're the last to go.

But I love memory games so I thought this would be a cinch. I stepped up with the first group, thinking, "I'll be fine!"

Several of the squares brightened for a few seconds and I needed to memorize the pattern. In a few seconds, I was expected to step onto the center of one of those previously lit bricks until I made it across. The mirror above the glass floor threw me off, though. Was it square 10 or 11 that was illuminated further down?

But as we were asked to take our first step, I was super confident. Then a red light encircled my bridge. My jaw dropped.

I was the first person eliminated.

The next room had everyone convinced we were going to play a fan-favorite game.

squid games tour

In between games, we stepped into break rooms that helped decide our gameplay for the next challenge.

In the first room, we were quickly asked to step inside a circle with one of four shapes: a circle, triangle, star, or umbrella.

Immediately, I assumed we were about to play the dalgona game. If I had to scratch a shape out of honeycomb-like candy, I knew I'd want a simple shape. I chose the circle.

I wasn't alone in my reasoning; nearly everyone tried avoiding the umbrella circle.

Though we stepped into a dalgona-themed room, it turned out we were playing a different game.

squid games tour

We entered a playground-themed space resembling the dalgona room from the shows, and groups of five gathered around tables marked with our shapes. We were instructed to open the tin cases in front of us, expecting to find dalgona candy and some type of tool inside.

Everyone was shocked to find several marbles instead. We were tricked!

We had four minutes to play. One at a time, each player tried to get their marble in the center of the shape on the table. If you succeeded, you took back your marble and any marbles outside of the shape.

The goal is to be the player with the most (or at least a large amount) of marbles by the game's end. Run out of marbles, and you're out.

The umbrella was the biggest shape, so these players turned out to have the advantage, not the disadvantage.

I redeemed myself during the marbles game.

squid games tour

During the first two rounds, I stunk, rolling my marble too hard outside the circle. I noticed one guy was a natural, though, so I quickly adopted his strategy of gently dropping the marble onto the table and my luck changed.

I finished the game with 11 marbles. He had 12.

I'm good at Operation, but a life-sized version of the board game was much harder.

squid games tour

This life-size version of Operation has never been shown on "Squid Game," but it worked similarly to the iconic board game.

My group worked together to remove fake organs from a giant, coffin-shaped box while racing against the clock. Hitting the sides resulted in time penalties. Specific tools were required to retrieve each organ, but it wasn't always obvious which one and someone else on your team might've been using it.

I've always prided myself on being good at Operation, but this was the second most stressful game I played. I managed to get something out successfully, but I'm pretty sure I contributed to a few penalties, too.

I was blindly paired up with a team for the next game.

squid games tour

Next, we stepped into a room filled with sepia lighting that drained the color around us. It felt like we were in a black-and-white movie.

We were instructed to stand in one of 12 lines along two walls.

There was an option to be a captain, but I didn't volunteer for that. Instead, I made a beeline for someone who did: TJ. I figured I couldn't go wrong playing with someone who was on the show.

Once everyone chose a line, the lights in the room changed to reveal that everyone was standing in front of the color pink or teal. I was on the pink team. We were then guided through the doors coordinating with our colors.

I was on the losing team for Battleship.

squid games tour

We walked onto a giant game board, realizing we were about to play Battleship, similar to the ones on "Squid Game: The Challenge." The lines we were previously standing in corresponded to the ships we'd sit on.

Unfortunately, I was on my team's largest ship, which was the first to sink.

This was the most chaotic — but coolest — game with people yelling out instructions on which spots to target on the board in front of us. The captains chose which enemy spaces we'd aim and fire at. You could be as active or passive in this game as you wanted.

It was very close, but we lost right before we could sink the opposing team's final ship. It was a bummer to lose because everyone on the winning team received 400 points.

At this point, I had 357 points and was in 26th place out of 31. My Squid Game career was not going as great as I hoped.

We were then asked if we wanted to stop playing or carry on.

squid games tour

In the final break room, everyone was given the option to quit and keep the amount of points they acquired or to continue playing the game.

However, if you lost the next game, you'd be eliminated. The people with the top three scores would head straight to the final.

There was no way I was going to stop. I needed to get some more points on the board. Nobody else decided to quit, either.

The do-or-die game was Red Light, Green Light. I was the first to finish.

squid games tour

We had five minutes to cross a pink line on the opposite side. The first person to cross received 400 points and then each subsequent person received 10 points less.

The field was nowhere near as long as the one on the shows, but giant presents were scattered throughout to make the game harder. I tried to line myself up so I had no boxes directly in front of me.

I moved a few feet each turn as fast as I could as the room became shrouded in green light for a few seconds before alternating to blood red.

This was the most stressful game of all due to the possibility of being eliminated. Every time the light changed to red, I was nervous I'd blink or move a finger. I kept hearing players' bracelets buzz around me, and I wondered if mine would be next.

It took me about three or four turns, but I was the first to beat the game.

I didn't get to play the last game, but that's OK.

squid games tour

Red Light, Green Light winners were supposed to compete in a final egg-drop challenge. Players needed to balance wooden eggs on spoons and could slap rivals' eggs to the floor. The last person standing faced off against the three finalists with the highest overall scores.

Sadly, I didn't get to participate in this one. Only the top 13 were invited to play, and I landed right behind the cutoff.

The winner was someone who made the original top three. She was given the choice to either claim the win or sacrifice herself so everyone would get a small prize. We all encouraged her to take her prize, which she did.

I wound up in 14th place. I could've done better, but I was proud of my result.

squid games tour

After I gained 400 points from winning "Red Light, Green Light," I ended in 14th place.

I had a good time and was impressed by the overall sense of camaraderie, despite most of us being strangers. People cheered others on in the final two games and no one was cutthroat. (But, then again, we weren't playing for over $4 million on a show .)

If given the chance to play again, I'd bring a group of friends with me instead of playing solo. I'd also avoid going first at the bridge game.

Now that I've had a taste of the competition, sign me up for season two of "Squid Game: The Challenge!" Just kidding. I may have made it through Red Light, Green Light, but I'm sure this was child's play compared to the real deal.

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

squid games tour

Check out the filming locations of the Netflix’s latest global hit, Squid Game, in Seoul, Daejeon, and beyond, and you can play the games in real life!

Squid Game is Netflix’s nine-episode series based on the real-life Korean children’s game – dubbed Ojingeo due to the size and shape of the game’s board – for which 456 people play classic childhood games for a chance to win a large sum of money.

However, there is a catch: the contestants are drowning in debt, and the prize is in the millions — just what a debt-stricken individual would need. And, while it may appear innocuous to those who haven’t seen the show, those in the know realize the actual brutal nature of the games: if you win a game, you move on. However, if you lose, you are instantly killed.

They even made many sets and set pieces, especially for the show.

According to Chae Kyoung-sun, the series’ production designer, all of the sets for the games were made from scratch, including the multicolored staircase based on M.C. Escher’s optical-illusion picture. The Korean neighborhood in the marbles competition segment and the mechanical doll from the first episode was also made for the show.

As the success of Squid Game reaches an all-time high, local governments in South Korea have seized the opportunity to capitalize on the show’s fame, marketing areas used and featured in its production.

Apart from Seoul, Squid Game makes use of or mentions various additional South Korean locales, and it turns out that some of them can be visited! So, pack your bags for a deep dive into the universe of the show, minus the violence and blood.

Several travel agreements have been signed between South Korea and neighboring and other countries, and they will go into effect on November 15th, lifting the quarantine for fully vaccinated tourists. While we wait for Season Two of Squid Game, this would allow more travelers to enjoy the numerous games featured in Netflix’s successful show.

Table of Contents

The Squid Game contestant’s hometown is Seoul, and many of the series’ scenes were shot in various locales throughout the city. The city authority has already adopted some of the show’s themes and designated many spots throughout town as must-sees.

Many sequences with Gi-hun, for example, were shot in Ssandmun-ding, which is located on the outskirts of Seoul to the north. A fish stall in Baegun Market on Samyang-ro 154-gil, a Pokopang arcade in Chang-dong, Sangbong Intercity Bus Terminal, and Namsan Park are among the other locations.

Kyodong Elementary School

Kyodong Elementary School was featured in the opening shot of Squid Game from the beginning. In the first scene, a young boy and his neighborhood friends are seen playing the eponymous Squid Game.

The moment set the tone for the rest of the episode, contrasting infantile innocence with the game’s inherent violence. Fans of Squid Game can actually visit Kyodong Elementary School, Seoul’s oldest elementary school, which opened in 1894!

Seongapdo Island, Incheon

The island in the program had to be depicted as distant and abandoned enough to conceal the mass murder of a vast number of people. The show’s reference to the tourist-heavy Jeju Island wasn’t a real filming location.

Instead, the filming took place on Seongapdo Island, which is only sparsely populated by fishermen. However, just a small amount of outdoor filming took conducted on Seongapdo, with the majority of the show’s gameplay taking place on Daejeon sets.

The cast of Squid Game was not shy about posting behind-the-scenes photos from filming locations on their social media profiles, with numerous photos geotagged in Daejeon.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by CHRISTIAN LAGAHIT (@chrisyan8)

Daejeon is Korea’s fifth-largest city, a television production center, and only 50 minutes by rail from Seoul. According to RadioTimes, Daejeon is one of the region’s tech hubs. It has acquired the moniker “Asia’s Silicon Valley” due to the large concentration of research universities and tech enterprises in the area.

Wolmi Theme Park

Wolmi Theme Park, located on Wolmido Island in Incheon, appears briefly in Episode 2 of Squid Game. While the show presents the amusement park as a location for illegal gang dealings, Wolmi Theme Park is far less sinister in real life.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Post Magazine, SCMP (@scmppostmagazine)

While the park is free to enter, the rides must be paid for. Aside from Squid Game, the park has appeared in a number of other dramas, including ‘It’s Okay to Be Okay’ and ‘Descendants of the Sun.’

Jeju Island

Though none of the locations were included in the series, one of the main characters, North Korean defector Sae-byeok, expressed a desire to visit Jeju Island after winning the games.

“‘What Would Player 067 Do on Jeju Island?’ is available on the official website of the Jeju Tourism Organization, and it introduces fascinating places to explore.” In early October, Jeju Island was introduced as the “ Hawaii of Korea ” by the US-based news magazine Newsweek. It also launched online marketing to boost awareness of Korean tourism.

squid game filming locations

Without Jeju Island, no list of Squid Game venues would be complete. While Kang Sae Byeok and Ji Young will never be able to visit Jeju Island and drink mojitos, viewers of the show will be able to. If she had made it to Jeju, it would undoubtedly have lived up to her expectations.

The volcanic island has beautiful beaches, craters, and the world’s longest lava tunnel. In addition, it is home to an enormous shield volcano, Mount Halla, in its heart.

Bonus:  Ulsan, a port city of South Korea

Although the show wasn’t filmed here, it has still garnered massive interest from the show’s fans.

The Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Village was built in 2015 to depict how the village looked when whale hunting was popular in the 1960s and 1970s. What was once an empty lot has been transformed into the “Squid Game” playground.

People of all ages are congregating at the Whale Culture Village in Jangsaengpo, Ulsan, to participate in games inspired by the Netflix TV show.

The Ulsan Whale Cultural Foundation, which operates the Jangsaengpo Whale Special Culture Zone in Ulsan, a port city in southern Korea, stated that over 10,000 people visited the Whale Culture Village on the first and second weekends of October, which was comparable to pre-pandemic levels!

If you take a walk around the virtual corridors of the internet these days, you’re bound to come across some memes, clips, quotes about Netflix Korean hit series Squid Game . After becoming the streamer’s biggest hit with over 100 million views within the first month of its release, Squid Game has people everywhere talking about it, hashing out theories, and, of course, reliving some of their favorite childhood games. In case you haven’t watched it (and live under a rock), the series follows a group of 400+ people who are deep in debt and agree to participate in a deadly competition in which they may end up dead or filthy rich. And they all get surprised when they discover each round of the Squid Game is a reproduction of children’s games, only with life or death stakes.

Now, Netflix has given Squid Game the reality show treatment with Squid Game: The Challenge , which has certainly earned its share of critique given the original show's satirization of the themes The Challenge embraces. Regardless, the first installment of the series was a major audience draw for the streamer, taking a leading spot in the Top 10 TV Shows on Netflix week after week. But if you've never watched the original Squid Game before, or just need a mental refresher on the most iconic games that appear in the original, fictionalized show (with some of them even making their way to The Challenge !), let's break them down.

Hundreds of cash-strapped players accept a strange invitation to compete in children's games. Inside, a tempting prize awaits with deadly high stakes: a survival game that has a whopping 45.6 billion-won prize at stake.

1 The Recruiting Game

Although not part of the Squid Game, the first competition presented in the series is a game all 464 contestants have to play in order to be accepted into the main event. Called “ddakji” in Korean, this game is very similar to playing pogs: you have to throw a paper card on top of another in order to flip it over. If it does flip over, you win. Of course, in Squid Game , we quickly learn that the first battle is rigged: the Recruiter ( Gong Yoo ) offers a load of cash if he loses and just slaps the opponent in the face if he wins. This is designed to keep potential contestants interested and then lure them to a higher-stakes competition: the Squid Game.

2 Red Light, Green Light

The first game in the Squid Game is played by children all around the world. It’s the type of game where, the bigger the group, the better it gets. In Red Light, Green Light, a predetermined area is set and while one player (the leader) stands at one end; with their back turned to the rest of the group, all the others can move. The lone player chants “red light, green light, one two three”, and everyone can move. When they get to “three”, however, everyone has to freeze. If anyone is caught moving, they’re either out or have to go back to the starting line. The game is simple, and you just have to move from point A to point B without being “seen,” but the rules vary. In most cases, the ultimate goal is to get past the leader when their back is turned. In others, you have to touch the tree on which the leader is leaning without being caught moving.

In Squid Game , the leader is a giant doll that lets players move when her head is turned to face a big tree. While she’s not looking, she chants “the Hibiscus flower has bloomed,” which is what Korean kids say instead of “red light, green light.” While she is chanting, players are allowed to run towards her. When she stops and turns, whoever moves is shot to death, and you can’t fool her – her eyes have motion detectors.

3 Sugar Honeycombs

Probably one of the hardest games in Squid Game , Sugar Honeycombs is frustrating for players because you can’t rely on strength, manipulation, or taking advantage of other players. The key to making it past Round 2 is… patience. And, turns out, a whole bunch of saliva.

In this game, each player gets a circular tin that can be opened up to reveal a sugar honeycomb with one of four different shapes modeled into it: a circle, a triangle, a star or an umbrella. Armed with nothing but a needle, the players have to carve out the shapes without breaking their design – if the shape doesn’t come out whole, the player is killed. Simple, right? The only problem is the sugar honeycomb is extremely fragile, and can break into pieces if you’re not careful. While most players use the needles to make tiny incisions on the edges of each shape (which takes forever), Gi-hun ( Lee Jung-jae ) realizes that making the sugar honeycombs wet is the best way not to break them, as they get softer and it gets easier to carve out the shapes without breaking them.

4 Tug of War

Easily one of the best rounds in Squid Game , the tug of war challenges each group of players to use all their strength and the best of their skills to make the other group fall to their death. There is only one rule: pulling on a thick rope to make the opposing team fall past the center mark. In order to make that happen, anything goes: psyching out the adversary group, pulling with all your strength, and other techniques.

As Il-nam ( O Yeong-su ) points out, tug of war doesn’t necessarily have to be about which group is stronger. There are ways to win even if you don’t have bulking members in your group, such as waiting for the opponents to get tired before using all your strength, placing team members on different sides of the rope, and using your full body weight to your advantage, as opposed to just your upper body’s.

In Squid Game , this round is used more as an episode to take a breather while getting to know some characters better than as a challenging entry in the competition. Each player is given a bag containing ten marbles and then they are all divided into pairs. The goal is to win every marble your opponent has, but, as they quickly figure out, between themselves and the person they chose to pair up with (usually the person they have become closest to), one of them will die.

From the very first game, all players knew that most of them weren’t going to make it to the end, but this was the first time they were directly responsible for the death of someone they cared about in the competition since the pairs were chosen by themselves. Players are authorized to use any minigame to win, from throwing marbles on a hole to guessing how many marbles the other player is holding in their closed hands. But, of course, the players don't really care about which method they use once they realize they'll have to kill a close friend in order to get to the next round.

6 Hopscotch

Round 5 is a variation of one of the most popular children’s games. In the original hopscotch, you jump from one square to another, avoid some of them along the way, and then make your way back. In Squid Game , however, there is quite literally no going back. Players have to jump their way along a bridge that has two glass squares side by side. While one glass square is tempered and will hold up to two players at a time, the square beside it is fragile and whoever jumps on it falls to their death. The “fun” part is figuring out which is which in sixteen minutes or less. In this game, each player does not have an equal advantage; the first player has no prior knowledge of which side to take, whereas the last player has seen 15 players make the right or wrong decision, making their challenge simply to get over the bridge in time.

7 Squid Game

The final round features a popular child’s game that, according to The Front Man ( Lee Byung-hun ), is one of the most violent games that Korean kids used to play. The game is played by drawing a square, a triangle, and two circles on the ground (the same shapes seen throughout the whole series) and has two teams trying to invade each other’s space. The tricky part is: you can’t touch any lines and must hop on one foot on most areas. Of course, players will try their best to make you fall along the way. Check out this short video below to visualize it a little better.

South Korea’s recent frenzied television offering Squid Game has brought new life to children’s games.

For those who haven’t watched it, the television series’ terrifying premise revolves around a contest where players, all of whom are in deep financial debt, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a large financial prize.

Squid Game was released worldwide in September 2021 and has become one of the most-watched series on Netflix to date.

Squid Game

It has amassed critical acclaim and international attention reaching the top-viewed program in 94 countries and attracting more than 142-million member households during its first four weeks from launch.

But if you want to immerse yourself even deeper into the phenomenon, you can plan a trip to experience the thrill of the locations.

Squid Game’s four main filming locations in South Korea were Daejeon , Central South Korea; Seongapdo Island (off Incheon); Ssangmun-dong , Seoul; Incheon International Airport and there are mentions of Jeju Island, DMZ and the neighbourhood of Daehakro in Seoul.

Squid Game South Korea

The cinematography may lead you to think Squid Games used CGI to create the unique locations, but they are actually filmed in real-life sets in the city of Daejeon.

Daejeon in central South Korea is the fifth largest metropolis and a major transport hub.

Superfans may have noticed that many of the series’ cast has posted behind the scenes and geo-tagged Daejeon.

Daejeon is considered an important science and research centre as home to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) known as the ‘MIT of South Korea’, so science-lovers will feel at home here.

The National Science Museum will round out the trip taking a whole day to enjoy but will keep the kids entertained.

After a long day on your feet, rest them in Yuseong Hot Springs where you can soak in a free outdoor 39 degree, springwater, foot bath, thought to cure everything from skin concerns to arthritis.

Looking for more? Daejeon O-World is a vibrant theme park built around the former Daejeon Zoo. It combines Flower Land, a large complex of beautiful gardens, Zoo Land – home to more than 600 animals and Joy Land geared toward kids, with rides, all-season sledging, and a water park.

2. Seongapdo Island

Squid Game South Korea

The Red Light, Green Light game featured in the nail-biting premiere episode takes place on an island. The island of Seongapdo featured, is however semi-uninhabited, with only four people living there.

Shaped like a crescent it doesn’t have regular boats ferrying passengers to and from, so plan ahead if you’re considering visiting.

There are many other islands off the coast of Incheon including Deokjeokdo, which is one of the prettiest and most relaxed. Ideal for beachside lazing and hiking, you can visit as a day trip from Incheon or stay overnight.

Ssangmun-dong

Squid Game South Korea

The Gganbu (Kkanbu) episode, which some consider the most heart wrenching, has the Game set-up in a small neighbourhood likened to Ssangmun-dong in Dobong-gu district in Seoul.

Ssangmun-dong is also where the protagonist, Gi-hun is from and the seafood shop of Sang-woo’s mother is also located in Baekwoon Market, also found in Ssangmun-dong.

The neighbourhood is renowned for its snack bars offering classic Korean street food such as tteokbokki and Korean fried chicken and is well worth exploring.

Incheon International Airport

Squid Game South Korea

In Squid Game’s final episode, we see Gi-hun at the airport with the Game’s calling card in his hand after having snatched it away earlier.

This was filmed at Incheon International Airport – South Korea’s largest and the main gateway for tourists.

Relax at one of the airport’s Luxe Lounges either before heading into Incheon or before your flight – there are eight lounges to choose from.

Bonus locations

Squid Game South Korea

A number of other locations are seen in Squid Game too.

In the Gganbu episode, the North Korean defector Sae-byeok says she has always dreamed of visiting Jeju Island – a UNESCO Natural Heritage Listed island.

Known for its pristine and scenic landscapes it is best explored by food on the Jeju Olle Trail that takes you around the circumference of the island or by bike.

Take some time to explore the Cheonjeyeonpokpo Falls, extinct volcano (Hallasan Mountain), the coastline and the Geomunoreum Lava Tube.

If you’re keen to understand the history between North and South Korea and why one of the main characters chose to defect from North Korea, you can head to South Korea’s Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Learn about the history of Korean War and the Cold War, visit the Joint Security Area, Observation Decks or the Peace Park.

If you’re looking for a Squid Games sugar thrill after watching episode three, you could try making Dalgona candy, a traditional Korean sugar candy tasting of honeycomb toffee, made with sugar and baking soda.

Alternatively head to Daehakro, one of Seoul’s trendiest neighbourhoods where street vendors have been making and selling the candy known as ‘ppopgi’ since the 1960s.

The neighbourhood of Daehakro is also known as Korea’s ‘Broadway’ and has all kinds of cultural and performing arts such as musicals, plays and non-verbal performances.

'Squid Game' actor discusses sudden rise to international fame

by JUWON PARK | AP Entertainment Writer

Indian actor Anupam Tripathi, who starred in the Netflix series "Squid Game", holds a "Squid Game" poster during an interview in Seoul, South Korea on Nov. 18, 2021. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon).

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Anupam Tripathi said his grandfather sometimes read his palm and told him he'd be rich one day. His joking response?

"Where is my money!"

The 33-year-old Tripathi was rightfully doubtful. The Indian actor who relocated to South Korea more than a decade ago eked out a living singing in humble theaters and through minor film gigs in his adopted home country. Now, after the global success of "Squid Game" and his turn as Ali Abdul, he's taking the camera far more seriously.

"Should I keep this on, or no?" he repeatedly asked his manager about a scarf around his neck before a recent sit-down, on-camera interview with The Associated Press.

In "Squid Game," Tripathi plays a Pakistani migrant worker assigned No. 199. It's a tear-jerker character for his display of innocence and loyalty throughout the brutal survival game in which cash-strapped contestants compete for the ultimate prize: $38 million.

Tripathi's sudden shot to international fame has made him one of AP's Breakthrough Entertainers of the Year alongside Rachel Zegler , Adrienne Warren , Damson Idris , Simu Liu , Saweetie and more.

Since the massive popularity of "Squid Game," which became Netflix's most watched show, Tripathi has gained more than 4 million followers on Instagram and kept busy appearing on Korean TV variety shows. He politely declined a wish of his brother to host a "Squid Game" screening in his relative's village in India.

"Everyone wants to celebrate this situation," Tripathi said. "For me, I just want to do my job and get away. This is the way I've always kept myself for 11 years in Korea. Do my job. Look for another job."

Tripathi left India (he was born and raised in Delhi) to study acting on scholarship at the prestigious Korea National University of Arts. He'd done plays in India since 2006 but was hungry for more, though some of his loved ones weren't so sure acting was the way to go in the early years.

"I was so focused," he said of that time. "Learning acting professionally was my dream."

Learning to act professionally was one challenge. Doing it in a new country while learning a new language was another.

"I was crying. There were two things: learn and cry. Those two things I was doing for three and a half months," Tripathi said.

Homesickness set in, but he persevered as he grew closer to his classmates. After graduation, he did what out-of-work actors often do. He took a restaurant job while looking for acting work. The stage and film jobs became more regular as the years passed.

"I started performing better in Korean," he said. "Now I can switch to English, I can switch to Korean, I can switch to Hindi."

When a "Squid Game" audition for the part of Ali presented itself, he was ready. His mood changed after he got the job.

"Before that, I had done a few lines in every movie," he said. "I was very, very nervous and at the same time excited and tense. How will I do it because it's so big?"

It was big in more ways than one. He had to build a bit of physical bulk to meet the expectations of the show's creators. Once filming began a short time later, Tripathi made some new friends on set, particularly Park Hae-soo, who plays Cho Sang-woo — the character assigned No. 218 and Ali's ultimate betrayer.

"We can share anything and talk about anything, anytime," Tripathi said. "It was the same with the characters. It was about trust until that moment where Ali realizes Sang-woo crossed the line."

It's unclear whether Tripathi will reprise his role if there's a second season of "Squid Game." Netflix hasn't confirmed one. While Ali's death wasn't shown on screen, his body in a casket was. Either way, Tripathi has other dreams to think about, like working with the directors Martin Scorsese, James Cameron or Terrence Malick.

"It's one of the beautiful characters I got and it resonated with everybody," Tripathi said of Ali. "It brought up the issue of migrants... or immigrants all over the world. I want to meet characters like that who can at least speak up for something."

Squid cancel tour dates due to member being “involved in accident” and suffering “multiple facial fractures”

"We will work to come back and play these shows as soon as we can"

Squid band members

Squid have cancelled their upcoming tour dates following a member of the band being involved in an accident, the band have shared in a social media statement.

  • READ MORE:  Squid on new album ‘O Monolith’: “We’re all in the groove now: we’ve never been more confident”

Earlier today (September 3) the Brighton post-punks took to Instagram to make the announcement about upcoming shows in China and Malaysia. The band had been set to play a series of shows in the two Asian nations beginning with a set at Sonic Jam Festival in Xi’an, China, on September 8.

Describing themselves as “extremely sad” to make the announcement, Squid explained that “one of us was involved in an accident and has multiple facial fractures.” They said they were told it would be unsafe for the unnamed band member to fly, and that while they had looked into getting a replacement to fill in, “the nature of our music means that this is very difficult to arrange at a few days’ notice, and we would be unable to procure the necessary work permits in time.”

They continued, “We were massively looking forward to playing in these new cities and meeting our fans who have been so supportive, and this outcome is very disappointing to us all. We will work to come back and play these shows as soon as we can.”

Over the summer, Squid played a series of shows across the UK, Europe and South America, including a set at Glastonbury 2024 . They also played North America earlier this year to tour their second album, ‘ O Monolith ’, which was released in June 2023.

NME gave the album a four-star review , calling it “a monument to daring artistic growth” and saying, “If Squid can make daring, experimental music sound as fun as this, then they will take some stopping.”

In January, they released another track, ‘Fugue (Bin Song)’ , an outtake from the album which had been a live staple of the band for some time.

A look at the chiefs games that taylor swift will likely attend in the 2024 season amid final eras tour dates, share this article.

squid games tour

When Taylor Swift kicked off her Eras Tour back in March of 2023, the schedule for the Kansas City Chiefs was probably the furthest thing from consideration in her travel schedule.

But so much has changed in that time, which brings us here.

Ever since the 14-time Grammy winner went public with her relationship with Travis Kelce , Swift has been a mainstay at games to support the Chiefs tight end. That should remain the same for the 2024 NFL season as well.

Swift finished up the European leg of the Eras Tour in August, but she will go back on stage in October before closing out the 21-month marathon with three December shows in Vancouver.

But that busy schedule still lines up nicely for Swift to make appearances at Arrowhead Stadium and plenty of road games this season. Let’s take a look at the games we’d expect to see Swift in attendance.

1 Week 1: Thursday, Sept. 5 vs. Ravens

Can Swift attend? NO.

The Chiefs are coming off a bye week for this Super Bowl rematch. Swift, though, will be back on tour. She has an Eras Tour performance at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium set for that Sunday night.

7 Week 8: Sunday, Oct. 27 at Raiders

The Chiefs will host the Chargers at Arrowhead, but we won’t be seeing Swift in the crowd. The 14-time Grammy winner will conclude the record-breaking Eras Tour that Sunday with her final concert at Vancouver’s BC Place. We might see Travis make a trip to Canada that Friday before returning to Kansas City, though.

MLB's travel plans for '24: Seoul, Mexico City, London, D.R.

David Adler

David Adler

The MLB World Tour is coming to four international destinations in 2024: London, Mexico City, Seoul and Santo Domingo.

The Seoul Series will be the opener of the 2024 MLB regular season -- and will mark the first MLB regular-season games ever played in Korea.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association announced the full plans for the four series on Wednesday.

• Seoul Series: Dodgers vs. Padres, March 20-21 (MLB season opener) • Mexico City Series: Astros vs. Rockies, April 27-28 • London Series: Mets vs. Phillies, June 8-9 • Dominican Republic Series: Red Sox vs. Rays, March 9-10 (Spring Training)

• MLB international

"Major League Baseball is incredibly excited for this extensive slate of international games in 2024," Commissioner Rob Manfred said. "Our recent efforts have produced strong enthusiasm around the globe, and we look forward to building on that foundation with returns to Mexico City and London, while also opening the season in Korea for the first time. In addition, we can’t wait to celebrate the tradition of the sport in the Dominican Republic with our visit to Santo Domingo next March. We are thrilled that our fans across four different countries outside the United States and Canada will have the opportunity to see the game’s stars."

The MLB World Tour schedule for next year includes the return of games to the United Kingdom and Mexico for a second consecutive season, after the 2023 London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals and Mexico City Series between the Giants and Padres, in addition to new stops in Korea and the Dominican Republic.

“Players have a deep interest in growing baseball around the world. No matter where they come from, players are linked by a passion for our game that transcends different languages, cultures, and nationalities,” said Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association. “The series announced today will allow fans around the globe to gain a first-hand appreciation for the unmatched skill and infectious enthusiasm players display every time they go to work. We are excited to expand our international presence in new communities and celebrate the game we all love.”

Here's a look at each of the four international series in 2024.

Seoul Series

The Dodgers and Padres will open up the 2024 season with two games in Korea from March 20-21.

The Seoul Series will mark the ninth time that the MLB season has opened outside the 50 U.S. states and Canada, and the first time in five years. Previous international openers include:

• 1999 -- Monterrey, Mexico (Rockies vs. Padres) • 2000 -- Tokyo, Japan (Mets vs. Cubs) • 2001 -- San Juan, Puerto Rico (Rangers vs. Blue Jays) • 2004 -- Tokyo, Japan (Rays vs. Yankees) • 2008 -- Tokyo, Japan (Red Sox vs. A's) • 2012 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners) • 2014 -- Sydney, Australia (Dodgers vs. D-backs) • 2019 -- Tokyo, Japan (A's vs. Mariners)

It will be the Dodgers' first international games since they played the Padres in Mexico in 2018, and their second Opening Day abroad after the 2014 season opener in Australia.

"The Dodgers have a long and proud history of helping to grow the game abroad, highlighted by our trips to Mexico, China and Australia. It's very exciting to add Korea to the list," Dodgers president Stan Kasten said. "I know our players are thrilled to put their talents on display in a country so rich with baseball tradition and talent, including former Dodgers Chan Ho Park, Hee-Seop Choi and Hyun Jin Ryu."

The Padres will be playing internationally for a second straight season, but in a new country, going from the 2023 Mexico City Series to the 2024 Seoul Series. Like the Dodgers, they've also played abroad on Opening Day before, in the inaugural international season opener back in 1999.

"Korea is a great baseball country with a rich tradition, passionate fans, and talented players, including current Padre and San Diego fan favorite Ha-Seong Kim," Padres CEO Erik Greupner said. "The Padres are proud to serve alongside the Dodgers as global ambassadors for the game of baseball with our historic 2024 Korea Series."

Mexico City Series

The second Mexico City Series will feature the Astros and Rockies for a pair of games on April 27 and 28, almost exactly a year after this season's inaugural Mexico City Series.

Both Houston and Colorado last played internationally in Mexico, but in Monterrey, not Mexico City. The Astros played two regular-season games against the Angels there in 2019, and the Rockies played an exhibition series against the D-backs that same year.

The Astros have played exhibition games in Mexico City before, in 2016 against the Padres and 2004 against the Marlins.

London Series

The London Series returns for its third edition overall, with the Mets and Phillies facing off at London Stadium on June 8 and 9.

The Mets will be playing abroad for the first time since 2010, when they faced the Marlins in Puerto Rico. But they're no stranger to international games, having participated in both MLB's first-ever international regular season games in 1996 in Mexico and MLB's first-ever regular-season games in Japan in 2000.

• 2024 London Series will feature NL East rivalry in Mets-Phils

"Interest in baseball is growing all over the world, and to bring the Mets' 'never-say-die' attitude to sports fans in London is a tremendous honor," Mets owner Steve Cohen said. "Our Queens family is ready to show London a great time with exciting baseball and amazing experiences that create new fans and build the Mets community throughout the United Kingdom."

The Phillies have never played regular-season games internationally, and have left the U.S. and Canada only once, over 50 years ago, for a pair of exhibition games against the Pirates in San Juan in 1977.

"Major League Baseball has done an excellent job of expanding its footprint internationally, and we are honored to play a role in that effort as part of the 2024 London Series," Phillies managing partner John Middleton said. "This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our players' talents and highlight the excitement that comes with a Phillies-Mets matchup for our fans in the UK and for those who have never attended a baseball game."

Dominican Republic Series

In addition to the three international regular-season series planned for in 2024, the Red Sox and Rays will play a Spring Training series in Santo Domingo at Estadio Quisqueya from March 9-10.

"This unique opportunity builds on our long-standing connection to the Dominican Republic and allows us to celebrate the remarkable talents and rich cultural heritage of a country whose passion for the game has distinctly shaped our organization," Red Sox president Sam Kennedy said. "From the players who have passed through our Dominican Republic Academy to those who have helped us win championships, we have been fortunate to witness the profound impact of Dominican players within our game, and we are thrilled to be able to bring Red Sox baseball to such a vibrant baseball community next year."

Exhibition games are also a key part of the MLB World Tour, which includes up to 16 exhibition games being played internationally between 2023 and ‘26, as well as up to 24 regular-season games spanning Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Tour Confidential: Solheim Cup preview, golf’s next made-for-TV match

Team Europe retained the Solheim Cup on home soil last summer.

Getty Images

Check in  every week  for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport, and join the conversation by tweeting us at  @golf_com . This week, we preview the Solheim Cup, discuss golf’s newly announced made-for-TV match and share our picks for the best deals in golf. And if you’re looking for our writers’ thoughts on last week’s Presidents Cup captain’s picks, you can read up on that here.

The 19th playing of the Solheim Cup gets underway Friday to Sunday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Va. Last year, the U.S. and Europe tied for the first time in the event’s history, allowing Europe to keep the Cup for the third straight meeting. Who wins this year, and why?

Josh Sens, senior writer ( @joshsens ): Team USA. Partly thanks to home-crowd advantage, but also because– with Lexi playing in what is very likely her last, and Korda coming off an epic season, and the team having a nice balance of youthful fire and experience–it just feels like the way the spirits of the game would want it scripted.

Sean Zak, senior writer ( @sean_zak ): Wow, Josh Sens — big spirits guy! Put your tarot cards down and look at who is playing well. As much as Charley Hull, Esther Hensleit and a few Euros may be flashing at the moment, the best player is on Team USA, and so is the second-best player in Lilia Vu. Andrea Lee played great in St. Andrews and Rose Zhang is on the cusp of another great run herself. Not to mention the dawgs that are Lauren Coughlin and Ally Ewing. Team USA is going to win, and I fear it may not be close.

Sens: Sorry. I promise to ditch the ‘shrooms before our next roundtable and stick strictly to shot data.

Zephyr Melton, assistant editor ( @zephyrmelton ): I like the Euros to continue their dominance. The Americans may have some solid form, but that hasn’t helped them much the last few times around. When the lights shine the brightest in these team events, the Europeans always seem to come up clutch.

Last year it was Spain’s Carlota Ciganda who stole the show , finishing 4-0 and beating Nelly Korda 2 and 1 in singles play. Who will be the most important player for each side come next week, and who will be the event’s MVP?

Sens: For additional feel-good purposes, I’d like to say Lexi. But I’ve got a sneaky sense about captain’s pick Jennifer Kupcho, in a fiery bounce-back from her rough showing in Spain. (The caveat is that records in this format can be deceptive, as they’re largely dependent on how both your partner and your opponents play. For good reason, the MVP is often the lead point earner, who isn’t always the player who performed the best or meant the most to their team)

Zak: Most important? Lilia Vu. She’s capable of winning five matches, and is in good enough form to do it. She went 1-3 last year, during the same season where she won two majors. That’s not cutting it. MVP is going to be Nelly Korda, who will play five matches and be favored in every one of them. She’s on the right path back to dominance after a weird summer, and it may all click this week.

Melton: Gimme Leona Maguire from Team Europe. She’s had an uneven 2024 thus far, but she’s been an absolute stud in this event the last two playings. I like her to continue that trend and improve on her 7-2-1 Solheim Cup record. As far as the Americans go, it’ll be tough for them to come away victorious unless Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu play well.

Golf’s next made-for-TV match will see Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler face off against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in December in Las Vegas. What do you think of this matchup? And will the PGA Tour vs. LIV angle help with ratings?

Sens: It better help with the ratings because, really, is there any other reason for the match? This is designed to feed directly off golf’s civil war, and –outside of the majors, with a deal between the two tours nowhere in sight—it’s as close as the two circuits are going to get to giving people what they want. It helps, of course, that you’ve got four mega-names with lots of subplots/tensions in their relationships. But more than anything, this is an extension of the ongoing battle in the men’s pro game. Fans and media alike will assign all kinds of fabricated meaning to it as well, using the results as some kind of proof of which tour is more worthy. Birdies will abound. Ratings will be high. And people who already have a lot of money will make more of it by entertaining the masses with an event full of manufactured ‘meaning’. A perfect confection for our times.

Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy smile (L) and Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau shake hands.

Golf stars to battle in PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf primetime match

Zak: It really is a compelling matchup, putting two of the Tour’s three best against two of LIV Golf’s best. You’ve got Mr. Entertainer in Bryson, Mr. Jock in Brooks, Mr. Worldwide in Rory and Mr. Best-Since-Tiger in Scottie. It’s as compelling a product as you can field without the names Woods, Mickelson and Spieth. I’m sure it will be marketed as a war of sorts, but I hope that isn’t the case. Because these guys don’t dislike each other. I hope it’s a proving ground for many things. Ultimately, it’s probably just 12 or 18 holes of fun match play.

Melton: I’m certainly intrigued by the event, and having a LIV-PGA Tour angle should do a great job adding hype to the match. Will that be enough to generate some much-needed high ratings? I’m dubious.

Does the PGA Tour vs. LIV tie hint that the sides might be coming closer together on a deal? Or at least learning how to co-exist? How valuable might mini treaties like this be for the future of pro golf?

Sens: Does anyone, even the main actors themselves, have any idea how far or close they are from the deal? With so many moving parts and parties to appease, I get the sense even those directly involved aren’t sure what a final deal would look like. Meantime, a match like this does seem like a search for ways to profitably coexist. Purists might not see it as a great sign for pro golf, but if you look at the game purely as an entertainment product, it strikes me as a savvy way to go.

dj khaled and jimmy fallon laugh together at american century championship.

What a Jimmy Fallon/DJ Khaled golf match tells us about golf’s direction

Zak: Let’s call this a mini-treaty then. I think it’s valuable in the sense that ratings will be improved from the last match: a skins game featuring Rory vs. Lexi Thompson vs. Max Homa vs. Rose Zhang. I think it’s valuable to put LIV Golfers on the same playing field as Tour stars in the month of December (when they might normally be absent from public eye). I think it’s valuable to do it all in a non-major championship setting, too. Will it bring any “nos” from the boardroom closer to “yesses”? I don’t really think so.

Melton: I’m a bit exhausted analyzing every little thing in golf in the context of the Tour vs. LIV battle. The truth is no one knows what’s coming next other than a select few on the ins of the negotiations. I’m not putting too much stock in this event being a harbinger of things to come.

Speaking of LIV Golf, it released its dates and venues for the first four tournaments of 2025, and while all of them will be played internationally, they also all will be played during the same weeks as some of the PGA Tour’s biggest events — the WM Phoenix Open, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship. Why would LIV Golf schedule these to compete directly with the Tour? Does it matter?

Sens: On the face of it, you could read it as a flex by LIV, especially going up against the hard-partying Phoenix Open, which is probably the closest the Tour offers to the atmospherics of a LIV event. But I don’t think it’s worth assigning too much meaning to any of it, other than to underscore that LIV is soldiering on, propelled by an endless budget, and that those dates on those venues fit well enough. As a serious competitor for the Tour’s main audience, it doesn’t seem much more than so much spit into the wind.

Zak: LIV can’t compete with the Tour for eyeballs, but I suppose it can try to put a dent in the ratings the Tour is most proud of? It can also stage the best events it can and produce social clips of players drinking beers out of shoes during weeks where the PGA Tour is cool, calm and relaxed at Riviera. It won’t matter, ultimately, to field tournaments during these weeks because the international time zones where LIV will be playing means they won’t actually compete directly. And at the end of the day, there’s about 10- to 15 golfers at LIV who fans really want to watch. And there are at least twice to three times that on the PGA Tour.

Melton: Truth be told, it doesn’t really matter when LIV schedules their events as it relates to Tour events. While Tour ratings might be down, they still dwarf the number of eyeballs drawn by LIV. I’m sure there’s some deeper meaning to this scheduling decision, but ultimately it doesn’t change the fact that LIV doesn’t move the needle.

Last week, we released our first-ever list of America’s best golf courses you can play for $100 or less. What’s the best course under this criteria — whether it’s on this list or not — that you ever played?

Sens: Since I just made this case on our site on Friday, I’m going to have to stick with George Wright, just outside Boston. A great Donald Ross-designed muni under the care of a miracle-worker superintendent who has made the absolute most of a minimal maintenance budget. It’s a great walk and an entertaining challenge in a green space that gets you far away from the urban bustle, even though it’s less than 8 miles from downtown.

Zak: It is difficult to think of a better golf course for $35 than The Aiken Golf Club, in Aiken, S.C. It’s so simple and so good. Drivable par-4s, long par-3s, pinestraw, tight lies, firm greens, tall pines and elevation changes. And all a 35-minute drive from Augusta, Ga. If you’re bringing the clubs on a Masters trip in early April, you better not miss this one.

Melton: Zak is spot on in his assessment of Aiken. I played it for the first time this spring and absolutely loved it. As far as the best deals up in my neck of the woods, it’s hard to beat the $75 green fee for residents of NY at Bethpage Black. Being able to tee it up on a major championship and future Ryder Cup host for less than $100 is an unbelievable bargain.
