DJ Pretty Lights

After nearly five years of silence, Pretty Lights has announced his return on Tuesday (April 4).

Pretty Lights Channels Funky ’70s Soul on ‘Rainbows & Waterfalls’

This morning, the elusive, New Orleans-based producer shared a two-minute video via social media announcing The Soundship Spacesystem Tour. The video also previews his first official new music since 2017’s “Rainbows & Waterfalls.”

The Soundship Spacesystem Tour will hit nine stops: Denver, Lake Dillon, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Chicago, Pelham, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Besides the stop at The Caverns in Pelham, Tenn., Pretty Lights did not yet give any detail as to which venues he would be playing or specific dates. Each stop will feature Pretty Lights playing multiple nights, with 27 shows in the nine cities in total.

Trending on Billboard

Meanwhile the official Pretty Lights tour will include two new types of performances: Pretty Lights in Dub and The Fantastic Pretty Lights, the latter of which is expected to be a collaboration with longtime friend Michal Menert and The Pretty Fantastics.

The Soundship Spacesystem Tour announcement video features Pretty Lights performing a new, currently unnamed song with lyrics that seem to reflect his return to the scene: “I’ll fly a starship across the universe tonight/ And when I reach the other side/ I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can/ Perhaps I may become a pretty light again/ Or I may simply be a single drop of rain/ But I will remain/ And I’ll be back again.” Hear this track below.

Pretty Lights’ absence from the industry over the past five years has been a mysterious one. The producer, born Derek Vincent Smith, had last live appearance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in 2018, where he headlined the venue with his live band over two sold-out nights. Following those shows, Pretty Lights wiped his social media and began an unannounced hiatus, leaving his cult following wondering when he would return.

Several months later, Pretty Lights appeared virtually during a live performance from friends and collaborators Break Science. On a screen behind the band, he remotely jammed with them for two of his songs, “Shining Bright Despite The Plight” and “High School Art Class.” Two years later, this past February, Pretty Lights appeared in a promotional video for Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom, a small Denver venue that was celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Pretty Lights Flicker Back on After Nearly Five Years In the Dark With Tour Announcement

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

EDM favorite Pretty Lights returned after nearly five years of almost total silence, announcing a North American tour and sharing some new music.

The DJ/producer — who was a festival regular in the 2010s with hits like “Finally Moving” and “Rainbows and Waterfalls” — hasn’t played live since 2018 and hasn’t released any music since 2017. On Tuesday, April 4, he returned to social media to announce the Soundship Spacesystem Tour and share a new message with fans.

The teaser video for the tour features what is ostensibly a bit of new music, with Pretty Lights singing in hypnotic, multi-layered auto-tune: “I’ll fly a starship across the universe tonight/ And when I reach the other side/ I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can/ Perhaps I may become a pretty light again/ Or I may simply be a single drop of rain/ But I will remain/ And I’ll be back again.”

Pretty Lights has been more or less absent from the public scene since his last live show, which was back on Aug. 11, 2018. Without any note or message, the artist wiped his social media accounts and effectively disappeared. He briefly emerged two years later to show his support for the protests following the police murder of George Floyd, while later that year, he appeared during a virtual Break Science concert . Most recently, in Feb. 2022, he popped up in a promotional video for a Denver venue celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Pretty Lights (born 21 November 1981) – aka Derek Vincent Smith – is a well-regarded electronic music producer from Fort Collins, Colorado, US as well as the owner of the record label Pretty Lights Music.

Smith wrote hip-hop music throughout high school and college, and would later drop out of college to pursue music full time. Smith and his friend Michal Menert officially formed Pretty Lights in the Summer of 2004, but didn’t release their first album “Taking Up Your Precious Time” until 2006. This album featured the hit song “Finally Moving”, which is a consistent crowd pleaser during Pretty Lights' live shows.

After the release of Pretty Lights’ debut album Smith began touring regularly and started to gain a large following after opening for huge acts such as STS9 and Widespread Panic. Smith’s music caught the audience’s attention with his ability to mix hip-hop beats, jazz riffs, funk, and electronic music together to create interesting sounds. He is fond of using old school samples that are chopped up and placed throughout his music to create a chill, laid back sound. The smooth sounds of the Fender Rhodes electronic piano and jazz flute are consistently heard in his music and nicely juxtapose the modern electronic sounds that he produces with synths.

On Pretty Lights’ 2013 album “A Color Map of the Sun” Smith decided to challenge himself by making the album without the use of any samples. Instead of using samples, Pretty Lights composed all of the music and used analog synths to achieve some of the grittier tones on the album. The album was both a commercial and critical success. It reached the number two spot on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Charts and it received a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronica Album. The album also featured collaborations with several notable musicians like Talib Kweli who appeared on the song “Around the Block” and Eligh who appeared on “So Bright”.

Pretty Lights has gained the popularity to consistently sell out tour dates and play huge festivals such as Bonnaroo, Ultra, and Coachella. He has also made an appearance on the late night television show Conan, which has presented his music to a wider audience. As the name Pretty Lights might convey, his shows can be expected to be full of pretty lights and laser shows, which beam across the stage to the glitchy dance music blaring through the speakers.

Live reviews

Derek Vincent Smith - better known as Pretty Lights - is the mastermind responsible for the visionary combination of dub, funk, jazz, hip-hop, soul, and electro, to create a one-of-a-kind sound. Historically, he has been dubbed a masterful sampler forging his tracks from hundreds of other songs.

His latest album "The Color Map of the Sun" deviates from this norm, with 100% production of the music done in concert with other musicians and singers. PL's live performances are nothing short of amazing. Living up to the name "pretty lights," he creates a light show for concertgoers that is flat out mind blowing. Everything from piercing colorful lasers to city skyline structures all synchronized in illuminated rhythmic beauty to beat of his songs. PL will throw down a super heavy dub track and then seconds later layer a mind-altering saxophone riff over top - which is simply unparalleled in American electronic music. His music hits your soul and creates an almost glitchy energy that forces you to move your body in ways you didn't think were possible. The most beautiful aspect of the live PL experience is that every single soul within earshot is moving and grooving to a sound that's so complex and unique in every way imaginable that the only thing left to do is smile. Another element to PL live performance that puts significant experiential ground between him and the more contemporary DJ performers is that he now tours with a full band. For years Pretty Lights was known to tour with a drummer, and then he began touring solo. Just since the release of his 2013 album, "A Color Map of Sun Remixes," has PL enlisted the accompaniment of a full band - a deliberate move to enhance concertgoer experience, and imprint on everyone's subconscious the superior degree to which the PL sound surpasses the electronic show standard we had all grown accustomed to in the 21st century.

I can't stress enough the awe-inspiring experience of seeing an artist like Derek Vincent Smith perform live. No matter where your musical tastes fall, this is without a doubt an artist whose musical talents should be experienced live and in person - in its purest and most unfiltered form - to be truly appreciated.

A music proprietor in every sense of the word, Pretty Lights has brought electronic music, art, and technology to experimental heights which we've never seen.

Pretty Lights, real name Derek Vincent Smith, is a successful electronic music producer from Colorado in the United States. Smith chose the name Pretty Lights well: his shows are spectacular, filled with incredible bright lights and flashy gimmicks and awe inspiring pyrotechnic displays. Pretty Lights’ shows are not just about the incredible lights and stage set ups though. His music is evolutionary, a brilliant combination of funk music, hip hop, soul, dub, jazz and, obviously, electronica. The mind blowing light show that lit up the stage and the sweaty, heaving crowd that had come to enjoy and rave to his music, was prettily synchronised to Pretty Light’s music. The laser lights flashed to the beat of Pretty Lights’ songs. His sound is pumping and energetic and just to add to his overall sound, Pretty Lights had a full band behind him to accompany him with his DJ set. The band really added to the impact of Pretty Lights’ sound. Tripp, psychedelic tunes such as ‘The Time Has Come’ and ‘Who Loves Me’ were rewarded with huge cheers by the heaving crowd and everybody danced along like crazy to the incredible performance.

Derek Vincent Smith, otherwise known by his stage name of Pretty Lights has become a master of electro and his experimental nature allows him to expertly merge genres such as nu-jazz and funk. He was one of the most anticipated acts performing at T in the Park 2014 due to the combination of music and visual.

Taking over a small tent late at night, Derek lived up to his pseudonym by performing one of the most all consuming light shows that the festival had seen. Despite his stage set up being quite small, he had an expertly designed selection of visuals which supported the trippy works of 'The Time Has Come' and 'Who Loves Me'. The audience are a mixture of those dancing along to the alt-electro beats and those simply stood with mouths agape watching this ethereal show.

Smith is great at helping to hype enthusiasm from the audience as he jumps around behind the decks before playing fan favourites such as 'Lost & Found'. A truly visual performer and one who must be seen to be believed.

Pretty Lights at Red Rocks... need I say more?! It was an amazing show in an awe-inspiring venue. The show opened with Mux Mool who got the vibe going with a mostly live one-man set, then Michael Menert and the Pretty Fantastics came on and they really ramped up the goodness with an amazing live band and vocals (just wow), and then Pretty Lights and his live band (and killer light show of course) lit the place up and fed the funk fire for the next 3 hours! It was everything you'd expect from a live Pretty Lights performance and the crowd was lovin every minute. It was a fam night, no doubt. 10 years of some of the best music on the planet with a polished band who were feeling each other and the love of the crowd literally brought tears to my eyes more than once. It was a show and all the feelings that I will never forget! Much love to the PLF!!!

As a long time fan of Pretty Lights, I must say Saturday's show really hit a high!! Derek and his crew have put together some amazing music, lights, and energy for all of us to enjoy! I love the new twist from Pretty Lights, to Pretty Lights Live - the added feel of real instruments, and musicians makes the music feel so alive! Thank you to Derek, Chris, and all the boys on stage for us!!

Immersive. Derek is a musician and theatrical performer. His show is intimate, wrapping you up in how he wants you to feel - like telling a story via electronica. Lately I've heard that he's been getting wasted on stage which was taking away from his performance but he was on point at this show. Emancipator opening night 1 was icing on the cake.

I was pleasantly surprised with pl, although I would hAve rather seen more stage time from sts9, who frickin killed it btw!!!, and atmosphere.

Pl was super fun to get down to, Derricks raps were pretty weak besides one with his buddy/dj. The light show was unreal, I would Def recommend anyone who likes to shake it to go see pl!

We have been waiting for Pretty Lights to come to NYC for three years now. He did not disappoint. The energy that he has on stage really gets the crowd hyped - he is so focused on getting each and every fan involved and you can see how much he really puts into it when he's up there. Worth every last penny.

It was an amazing show! The lights were so beautiful the whole place was moving, you could just feel the vibes! Wonderful! I would definitely see another Pretty Lights show again. Red Rocks was an awesome venue to have it at too!

Pretty Lights To Return After Five Years Away With 2023 ‘Soundship Spacesystem Tour’ [Video]

Enigmatic electronic producer Pretty Lights , real name  Derek Vincent Smith , has broken a five-year silence to announce the 2023 Soundship Spacesystem Tour . The extensive outing, due to stretch from early August through early December, will feature 27 total dates in nine cities, plus festival appearances at Suwannee Hulaween (10-/26–10/29) and Cascade Equinox Festival (9/22–9/24).

The string of concerts—the first live Pretty Lights shows since a pair of 10th anniversary live-band performances —will feature familiar musical collaborators Michal Menert ,  Borahm Lee ,  Alvin Ford Jr. , and Chris Karns . The announcement also promises “musical and visual special guests.”

Pretty Lights heralded the news on Tuesday morning with a two-minute video posted to his long-dormant social media accounts. In the sci-fi-stylized announcement video, Smith borrows a verse from the country classic “Highwayman”, written by Jimmy Webb and popularized by Johnny Cash with  The Highwaymen . Through a cosmic web of vocal effects, he sings, “I’ll fly a starship across the universe divide, and when I reach the other side, I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can. Perhaps I may become a Pretty Light again. Or I may simply be a single drop of rain, but I will remain, and I’ll be back again.”

The video goes on to rattle off the various stops included as part of the tour. In a later post , Pretty Lights revealed that each of the cities listed would host multiple-night runs of concerts. Stops include Denver, CO’s Mission Ballroom (8/6–8/6), Dillon, CO’s Dillon Amphitheater (8/10–8/12), Atlanta, GA’s The Eastern (8/24–8/26), Philadelphia, PA’s Franklin Music Hall (9/14–9/14), Brooklyn, NY’s The Brooklyn Mirage (9/29–9/30), Chicago, IL’s The Salt Shed (10/19–10/21), Pelham, TN’s The Caverns (11/3–11/5) , San Francisco, CA’s The Warfield (11/9–11/11), and New Orleans, LA’s Mardi Gras World (12/1–12/2).

The tour poster , designed by  Leif Podhajsky ,  Mike Tallman , and Michal Menert, bills the shows with various tag lines and names—PL Live in Dub, The Fantastic Pretty Lights, Live From The Swirl Bridge—but does not go into detail about what they mean or their significance to the production. Listed visual collaborators for the tour include LazerShark, Anti-Alias, and Volt Peaking.

The long-awaited Pretty Lights tour announcement arrived alongside a message from Derek Vincent Smith in which he hints at even more news to come. “I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time and am immensely grateful to be healthy and happy and surrounded by amazing people,” he wrote. “I feel recharged and more ready than ever to launch a new vision of PL music and live events. Can’t wait to share everything that’s coming. … It’s a new dawn and I can’t wait to see you all again shining bright.”

Many fans are hoping that these hints point to new music from Pretty Lights, who has become increasingly selective with his official output in the last decade. Since the release of his acclaimed 2013 LP,  A Color Map of the Sun , the only new Pretty Lights music has come in the form of a brief 2014 EP,  The Hidden Shades , and a pair of singles, 2017’s “Strawberry Letter 23” flip “Rainbows & Waterfalls” and 2016’s mellow “Only Yesterday”.

Pretty Lights Returns After 5 Years With Soundship Spacesystem Tour

Beloved electronic music producer pretty lights returns to the scene in the best way possible, with a slew of new tour dates in 2023 amid his soundship spacesystem tour..

The last time Pretty Lights and his band performed live was at Red Rocks in August 2018 for a special 10th anniversary show. After that, Derek Vincent Smith, aka Pretty Lights, went primarily quiet on social media and halted show and festival performances. The artist never made an official announcement regarding his hiatus, but his absence from the community was felt heavily by fans.

Throughout the past few years, fans have received sporadic updates on Pretty Lights from other musicians and people in his circle. For example, in 2020, one of the Pretty Lights Live Band drummers posted an Instagram Story of himself and Derek in which Derek is pictured working on music. Then, in 2021 producer Mux Mool shared a video on Twitter of Pretty Lights spinning some tunes, presumably in his New Orleans studio.

More recently, Borahm Lee, the keyboardist for the Pretty Lights Live Band and Break Science, revealed on a podcast that he and Derek were collaborating in the studio together. However, his 2017 album, “Rainbows & Waterfalls,” still marks his most recent offering.

Lucky for fans, the days of random updates from Reddit threads are over. Electro-soul pioneer Pretty Lights returns and finally has some news to share himself: a brand new tour, which he’s calling the Soundship Spacesystem Tour. The tour was first announced on Pretty Lights’ social accounts today:

pretty lights returns

On Pretty Lights’ return, the artist said, “I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time and am immensely grateful to be healthy and happy and surrounded by amazing people. I feel recharged and more ready than ever to launch a new vision of PL music and live events. Can’t wait to share everything that’s coming. And fam, seriously, thank you so much for your endless love and support. Thank you for all the positive energy while I took time to focus mine. It’s a new dawn and I can’t wait to see you all again shining bright . Lfggggggg”

The tour includes headlining festival performances at Suwannee Hulaween in Florida in late October and a new festival, Cascade Equinox , in Oregon in late September. In addition to these two festival performances, Pretty Lights returns to places like Denver, Lake Dillon, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, The Caverns (TN), and New Orleans for his historic Soundship Spacesystem Tour. The tour will kick off the first weekend in August.

Artist pre-sale and additional info for Pretty Lights’ Soundship Spacesystem Tour can be found on Pretty Lights’ website . See more details from the artist’s socials below:

I’ve been a part of the dance music scene for nearly a decade and with Exron for more than half of that time. My first event was Diplo’s Mad Decent but these days you’ll find me at Club Space or the Brooklyn Mirage. Some of my top artists are G Jones, Tipper, Of The Trees, and CharlestheFirst. My favorite genres are techno, experimental bass, and ambient but I’ll get down to anything with a beat!

Let the swirl times roll.

I mean this new PL rejuvenation has been exactly what the world needed. Was unaware I was in need of a swirl but here we are. Would swirl again. 20/10 12 stars

Pretty Lights was magical and amazing this past weekend. I will never forget it. Friday was a bit of a slow burn, but it ended strong. Saturday was incredible from start to finish.

Pretty Lights at the Morhership!

Unbelievable! Incredible 2 shows, amazing staff and venue. Can’t wait to go back to Hampton. Now on to the rest of the PL tour!!!!

Show was amazing!! I just wish they didn’t the gates on the side

PL is the GOAT

With the band, since 2023, no one can rival. IMO the best of all time. Rock & Roll hall of fame no doubt!

Disappointed

The sound quality was really disappointing for the collessium. The bass was turned up was too high and it flooded out all of the other sounds. Maybe it's time for PL to hire a new sound crew because that was rough.

An incredible experience!

I saw Pretty Lights at Hampton Coliseum in 2012/2013/2014/2015 and am so thankful to see again in 2024! Thank You!

phenomenal!

incredible shows at the Hampton Colisem! The venue was excellent and the staff were very friendly.

Mothership Blasted into orbit

EPIC!!!! Like Always..

Derrick Kills it!! the whole new crew VECTURE SQUAD is epic!! such a Great venue, AC was cranking.. Perfect temp for a concert, not hot at all.. Very easy to get to Merch, Bathrooms, Floor, Seats!!! HAVE ZERO COMPLAINTS AND PRETTY LIGHTS CONTINUES TO AMAZE THE CROWD!! THEY ARE BACK AND STRONGER THAN EVER!! the Level of Production is IMPECABBLE!!
