For more information, visit our post comparing the various bus and trolley tours in the area.

  • Only available for night games/weekends

Hynes Auditorium

This section covers admission prices, availability, and what reviews say about tours of a location often described as America's Most Beloved Ballpark to help you pick your preferred tour.

Each tour is led by professional tour guides and includes stops at several notable attractions at the stadium and provides a lot of interesting information about the history of Fenway Park.

This is the home of Red Sox greats such as Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk, Pedro Martinez, David Ortiz (Big Papi), Wade Boggs, Johnny Pesky, Carl Yastrzemski (Yaz), Jim Rice, Luis Tiant, and many other notable legends.

If you're a fan of these baseball stars, this is one of the best ways to get a closer look at the ballpark where they made history.

Public Tours

This 1-hour tour is perfect for anyone who may or may not be familiar with the Boston Red Sox.

It provides an insider look and a lot of information about the team, their historic ballpark, and some of the most famous baseball stars who have ever played in Fenway.

Guests can expect to see historic sites such as the 37-foot tall (11-meter) Green Monster, Pesky's Pole, and even the Fenway Park Living Museum which houses an extensive collection of exhibits, including several notable stadium artifacts and historic photographs.

It is available year-round, during both the regular season and the off-season.

  • Prices: $25/Adults | $17/Children | $17/Military
  • Availability: Daily

At the time of booking, you can select when you want to take the tour: either 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, or 5 pm.

Reviewers seem to be very happy with this activity ( read reviews here ).

Even visitors who didn’t know much about baseball enjoyed their experience during a tour of Fenway. This tour was described as fun, insightful, and very informative.

Visitors who didn’t enjoy the other tours recommend taking this one instead to save money and get more bang for your buck.

If you plan on taking this tour during a game day, reviewers recommend getting there as early as possible and preparing for large crowds.

Fenway in Fifteen

Fenway also offers a quick 15-minute tour for those on a budget or time constraints.

This option includes a look at the Nation’s Archives at the Royal Rooters Club and a visit to the Right Field Roof Deck.

Fenway Park Tours

At the end of your short journey through Red Sox history, you’ll be treated to a wonderful panoramic view of both the ballpark and the Boston skyline.

This tour is only available on game days and weekends from 12 pm – 3 pm.

  • Prices: $15 for Adults | $15 for Children
  • Duration: 15 minutes

This is an excellent option if it is on a game day and you don’t have a lot of time before the game.

The Rooters Club includes a lot of wonderful memorabilia and it’s a great place for sports history buffs to visit.

Sadly, some guests indicate that you might not see much more on this tour than you would during the average game at Fenway Park.

Some visitors feel that the panoramic view is nice, but other reviewers say it is no better than any view you will experience while at a game.

TOURS THAT ARE AVAILABLE ONLY ON GAME DAYS

Even if you decide to come on a game day, there are still tours available at Fenway Park.

In this section, we will describe each tour option and include details such as admission prices & availability.

On game days, the last tour they offer will depart 3 hours before game time.

NOTE:  The public tour listed above is also available on game days.

Pre-Game Tour

This experience allows guests into the park before the general public and opens with a trip to the warning track where you can walk in the footsteps of Red Sox legends such as Johnny Damon and Ted Williams.

The Pregame Tour ends with a visit to the Monster Seats on top of the Green Monster where you will have a great chance of grabbing a fly ball off the bats of players who are warming up.

Admission for this tour is only available at the park on game days approximately 3 hours before the game begins.

  • Prices: $40 for Adults | $40 for Children
  • Availability: Only on game days
  • Duration: 45-60 minutes

This tour is popular among die-hard fans who are familiar with the history of Fenway and want to enjoy the opportunity to explore areas that are typically off-limits to visitors.

Red Sox fans tend to appreciate the chance to sit in seats that are usually reserved and visit the Green Monster.

Unfortunately, this tour is not always as informative as the public tour, but it’s still valuable for fans of the team.

Several guests note that batting practice is free to watch if you arrive early, so you don’t need to pay extra to see it on this tour.

Premium Day Game Tour

If you’re looking for a more family-friendly tour of Fenway Park, this is going to be your best option.

Fenway Park Game-day Tours

Not only will you have the opportunity to meet Wally the Green Monster, but you’ll also have the chance to take a photo on the warning track.

Additionally, you will learn a lot about the history of Fenway and the Boston Red Sox.

This tour is only available for afternoon games before 3 pm. You may be asked to pay an extra fee for your picture.

  • Availability: Only on afternoon game days

Much like the pregame tour, this option is particularly popular among Red Sox fans who want the opportunity to meet their favorite mascot and get a photo at Fenway.

Several customers have been unhappy about paying extra to receive the photo which is taken either in front of home plate or on the warning track.

This opportunity may not be worth the extra cost for visitors who are more interested in learning about the park and its history.

2. Military Offers

Guests who have either served or are currently serving in the military are eligible for $4 off admission for the main tour of Fenway.

In order to take advantage of this opportunity, you must purchase admission directly from Fenway Park and provide your military identification.

3. Deal Sites

In addition to the opportunities listed above, you can also save some money on the Fenway Park tour by using services such as Groupon and Living Social .

In the past, these websites have sold admission to Fenway Park tours, and there is a chance they will offer lower prices on these services again in the future.

Both of these sites offer additional promotional credit every now and then to sweeten the deal, helping you to save an extra 20% off or more on local activities.

Make sure to check both the top and bottom of the deal site for banners with promo codes that you can use for additional savings.

4. Children's Offer

Admission for kids between the ages of 3-12 are eligible for $6 off the general admission price.

This is a great way to save money on admission if you're coming with your family.

5. Senior Offer

Fenway Park does not currently advertise any special prices for senior citizens.

Even so, we recommend reaching out to them ahead of time to see if they offer any unadvertised deals for seniors.

6. Student Offer

There currently are not any advertised deals on Fenway Park tours for students.

Consider reaching out to them ahead of time to find out if they have any unadvertised deals students might be eligible for.

7. AAA Deals

Although AAA offers a lot of deals for their members, they currently are not offering any special deals on Fenway Park Tours.

This may change in the future, and you should check your account to see if there are any promotional credits available when you plan to take the tour.

8. Group Pricing

While Fenway Park does offer group tours, they consider this a private tour, and prices are actually a bit more expensive than the typical public tour.

If you are interested, here are the prices for Group tours of 12 or more guests:

  • $20/Children (3-12)

RED SOX GAME TICKETS

There are a few different ways to get admission for Red Sox games.

In addition to single-game ticket options, you can also purchase a package for multiple games which is typically available at a low cost.

Depending on where your seat is located, you can expect prices to range from $20 for the upper bleachers to $150+ for the field boxes.

Get Tickets Online

If you’re looking to order online, you can do so directly from the MLB.com website .

However, you might find even better deals and prices by using StubHub instead.

This is an online marketplace for people who have purchased tickets to events that they can no longer attend.

If you buy them well in advance, you can even save money over the normal price.

Get a Ticket at the Park

Needless to say, you can purchase game day admission directly at the park if they are available.

Boston Travel Tips and Hacks

Popular game days may be sold out when you arrive, so it’s probably a better idea to purchase admission online ahead of time.

Self-Guided Fenway Park Tour

If you’re heading to Fenway Park to take in a game, make sure you see a few things while you’re there.

Also, brush up on the words to Sweet Caroline.  Some of the listed items below are covered on the paid Fenway Park tours.

THE TRIANGLE

This is a section of center field created by seating with a far-right corner which is 420′ from home plate.

Can you imagine hitting a ball that far?! Or even worse, hitting a ball 357′ (all it would take for a homer in Philly) and not getting a home run!

Of course, hit it to the left or right, and you’re golden. Fenway has the shortest distance to either side in MLB (310 and 302′).

Make no mistake: despite the triangle, this is one of the best hitters parks in the game of baseball.

WILLIAMSBURG

Built in the 1940s, the bullpen was extended along the right-center field bleachers to decrease the distance needed for a home run by 23′ (for the benefit of left-handed hitter Ted Williams, hence the nickname!)

THE RED SEAT

Most seats in the right field section of Fenway are green with the exception of just one. This single red seat marks the distance of the longest home run.

Hit in 1946 by Ted Williams, the seat in Section 42, Row 37, Seat 21 was occupied by a gentleman who was hit in the head!

Ted Williams Red Seat Fenway Park

After the event, he said “How far away must one sit to be safe in this park? I didn’t even get the ball.

They say it bounced a dozen rows higher, but after it hit my head, I was no longer interested.”

What makes that story even better – the guy was a Yankees fan. I don’t need to tell you about the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, right?

(Babe Ruth is said to have likely hit a home run farther, but it was before these seats were built here – and it’s Babe Ruth, so it’s a given, right?)

THE GREEN MONSTER

The most notable feature of Fenway is the famous Green Monster. It’s a 37′ (11 m) tall green wall in left field that steals home runs from many line-drive hitters, leading to a whole lot of doubles at Fenway.

It’s the highest wall in the MLB.

The Green Monster Fenway Park

For most of its history, it was just called “The Wall” – but then Pink Floyd came around.

The Green Monster is now also the Red Sox mascot, an actual green furry monster named Wally. They are so clever!

Located on the wall is the scoreboard which is still updated by hand.

CURSE OF THE BAMBINO

Probably the most known fact about the Red Sox is their drought of championships – well, that and their rivalry with the Red Sox.

In 1903, the Red Sox won their first World Series. They won again in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918…. and then experienced an 84-year drought.

Babe Ruth Red Sox

That’s right, it wasn’t until 2004 that they won another World Series Championship. So what happened?

Many say, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way, that it was the Curse of the Bambino. In 1920, the Red Sox sold the rights to Babe Ruth to their rivals, the Yankees.

Why one may ask? Well, some say it was to finance a Broadway play, of course. Ever heard of My Lady Friends? (Me either, so one may wonder if it was a wise choice!)

And since the sale of Babe Ruth, the Red Sox would not win another World Series Championship until 2004.

They went to the World Series 4 times in those 84 years, losing twice to the Cardinals – and in 2004, they won against the Cardinals.

Not only did they win, but they also swept the Cardinals, never falling behind once.

As if that weren’t good enough, they had to beat the Yankees in order to get to the World Series.

Fenway Park Living Museum

You will need to take a Fenway Park tour to get admission to this museum, but it is absolutely worth it if you're a fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Visitors can expect to see more than 170,000 artifacts, including 24,000 3-D artifacts, a variety of memorabilia, dozens of World Series team-signed baseballs and game-used baseball bats, and more in the Fenway Park collection.

They also have 17 different displays covering the history of both the Red Sox and Fenway; 8 in the Nation's Archives at the Royal Rooter's Club and 8 in the Fenway Park concourses.

This variety of historical displays includes information about Fenway's early years, notable moments to remember from the 1930s, 1940s-1980s, 1990s-2008, the 2013 World Series display, historic Fenway Park lockers, and more.

They even have separate World Series baseball bat display areas from 2004, 2007, and 2013. They also have a World Series baseball display!

Learn all about the most renowned moments in the history of this team while taking a look at their extensive collection of Red Sox memorabilia and learning about the careers of team legends.

Fenway is home to more than 100 years of baseball history and has been the site of some of the best moments in the game.

Although we do our best to provide all the information you'll need to enjoy a tour at Fenway Park, there is always a chance that we will miss the details you were hoping to find.

That's why we have a Boston Travel Tips group on Facebook, where you can ask any additional questions you may have.

If you're wondering just how helpful our group members can be, here are a few interesting comments to consider:

fenway tours before game

If you were wondering whether or not any of the Fenway Park tours include a visit to the field, it's worth noting that this activity only seems to take place during Pre-Game Tours.

Even then, there's no guarantee that you'll visit the field during the tour, but that doesn't seem to affect how much guests enjoy their tour of Fenway.

fenway tours before game

As Laura notes, sometimes getting that on-field experience is as easy as signing up for it on game day when you arrive.

fenway tours before game

Even if you're not a baseball fan, there's a chance that you'll enjoy a tour of Fenway Park. There's so much history behind this ballpark, as it is literally the oldest stadium still in use in the Major Leagues today.

A lot of our group members agree that this tour is an excellent activity even just to learn about the history of the structure alone.

Everything You Need to Know About Fenway Park Public Tours

There’s nothing else quite like attending a Red Sox game at historic Fenway Park. Fenway franks, the fabled Green Monster, and the  tradition of singing “Sweet Caroline”  are all part of what makes the ballpark unique and why it attracts millions of visitors from all over the country every year.

But have you ever attended a ballgame or concert at Fenway Park and wondered what it would be like to go behind the scenes and see America’s most beloved ballpark up close without being surrounded by thousands of other cheering fans?

Well, you can do just that by taking a Fenway Park tour! While few things compare to seeing the Boston Red Sox play live, taking in the park when it’s silent and empty and learning about its history is a whole other experience that anyone interested in baseball or Boston’s history should explore.

Here is everything you need to know about the types of Fenway Park public tours that are available, what you can expect to see during each tour, and how to prepare for your visit so you’re comfortable and get the most out of the experience!

On This Page

It's Fun for the Major League Baseball Fan

It's fun for the history buff, it's fun for families, fenway park tour schedule, will i get to walk onto the field during a fenway park tour, public tours, fenway in fifteen tour, pregame tour, day game premium tour, ultimate birthday package, take me to fenway tour, online tour tickets, are there discounts available for fenway park tours, are fenway park tours accessible for wheelchairs, take public transportation, wear comfortable shoes, bring water on a hot day, bring an appropriately sized bag, buy tour tickets ahead of time, is a fenway park tour worth it, why tour fenway park.

Fenway’s tours are popular with baseball fans and non-fans alike. They’re so popular, in fact, that they tend to sell out ahead of time. They also operate year-round, even if it’s raining or snowing (with the exception of the area’s nor’easters, of course.)

A Fenway Park tour is a fun experience that’s not just for Red Sox fans. Dare we say it, but even Yankee fans have raved about them in reviews! If you fall into any of the following categories, you should definitely take a tour.

If you’re a baseball fan, taking a Fenway Park tour will have you walking in the footsteps of some of the legends that have played there including Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Carl “Yaz” Yastrzemski, David Ortiz, and countless others. You’ll get to see the field and the seats from their vantage point, and you can imagine what it must have been like for them to make sports history.

You’ll get to sit atop the world-famous Green Monster which is an awe-inspiring experience in itself. If you go on a game day, there’s a chance you’ll see the players warming up with batting practice and with a little luck, score a souvenir ball that’s hit your way.

You’ll also get to sit in the oldest seats in the park and see the lone red seat in the bleachers where the infamous home run ball hit by Ted Williams in 1946 was stopped by an unsuspecting spectator’s head.

Experienced tour guides give a comprehensive history of Fenway Park along with some baseball history and trivia. The ballpark is also home to the Fenway Park Living Museum which houses thousands of fascinating baseball artifacts. Even if you’re not officially a member of Red Sox nation, you’ll enjoy learning tidbits about the sport and the ballpark’s history.

Fenway Park is the nation’s oldest ballpark having opened in 1912 just days after the sinking of the Titanic. That’s a lot of history that it has seen, with original architectural details that have been preserved to this day.

The park has more than earned its rightful place alongside the city’s other famous landmarks such as the Public Garden, Museum of Fine Arts, Bunker Hill Monument, and Faneuil Hall. You’ll get to learn a bit about its historical significance and how it was constructed by taking a public tour.

For kids who are old enough to appreciate it, a Fenway Park tour makes for a fun family day. One of the tour options includes a visit with Red Sox mascot Wally the Green Monster. There’s also a birthday package tour that offers the opportunity to try on players’ uniforms and try batting practice in an official MLB cage.

Afterward, you’ll have the chance to buy Red Sox and Fenway Park memorabilia and can grab a bite to eat at any of the restaurants or bars in the area. The Bleacher Bar at 82A Landsdowne Street is a fan favorite, as it’s situated right underneath—you guessed it—the bleachers.

Kids at Fenway Park

Fenway Park tours operate daily year-round, even during rain and snow (unless there is a major weather event such as a blizzard or hurricane.)

The hours of operation vary slightly depending on whether it’s baseball season (spring/summer/fall) or winter:

Spring/Summer/Fall Hours  (April 1 – Oct. 31): 9 AM to 5 PM daily

Winter Hours:  (Nov. 1 – March 31): 10 AM to 5 PM daily

Public tours depart at the top of each hour. On non-game days, the last tour of the day departs at 5 PM.

On game days, the last tour departs  three hours before  the game start time.

The burning question on anyone’s mind who hasn’t taken a Fenway Park tour yet is if you’ll actually get to walk around the field. Unfortunately, we do have a bit of bad news to deliver.

The tour section of the Red Sox website states that all areas of the ballpark are subject to availability . That means that chances are, you may not get to actually walk onto the field during a tour.

Occasionally it does happen but it’s usually a rare occurrence that depends on several factors including the condition of the field and the size of the tour group. You also have a greater chance of being allowed access to the field during the morning tours on home game days .

Don’t let this revelation bum you out or discourage you from taking a Fenway Park tour, however. There is still so much to see and enjoy during your visit that makes up for not being allowed to walk on the field.

Available Fenway Park Tours

Fenway Park tours are definitely not one size fits it—there are several available public tours to fit different preferences. Here’s a detailed description of each that was listed at the time this article was published, which brings up an important point: new tours may be added and existing ones changed or dropped at any time.

This is an hour-long tour that most people spring for. You get to enjoy a 60-minute guided tour chockful of historical nuggets about the ballpark, notable players, and Red Sox history.

This tour also includes a visit to the media booth which offers a spectacular view of the park. You’ll also get to see the visiting team’s locker room, Pesky’s Pole, the rooftop garden, the press box, and get to take in the amazing view from the Green Monster seats. If you go on the day of a scheduled concert, you may get to see the artist or band warming up on the stage.

Prices: $25 for Adults | $17 for Children (3-12) | $17 for Military

fenway tours before game

You’ll also visit the Royal Rooters Club—home of the Nation’s Archives, where historic baseball and Boston Red Sox memorabilia and photographs are on display.

Prices: $15 for Adults | $15 for Children (3-12)

A fan favorite, the hour-long pregame tour gives attendees early access to the ballpark before the general public and takes place three hours before game time. You’ll get to see Fenway’s oldest seats (the Grandstand section, which dates back to 1934), walk on the warming track, and sit atop the Green Monster.

Fans love this tour for the potential chance to watch players practicing or scoring an autograph or fly ball.

Prices: $40 for Adults | $40 for Children (3-12)

This is a great tour for families and younger baseball fans. It includes a visit with Wally the Green Monster, a stop on the warming track, and a historical narrative of Fenway Park history.

This tour is only available on afternoon game days before 3 PM.

How would you like to try on the uniforms of past and present Red Sox legends, or hit some balls in a batting cage? The Ultimate Birthday Package tour includes all that, plus a souvenir for everyone at the party. This tour is available only on non-game days for groups of at least 12 people.

Prices: $50 for Adults | $30 for Children (3-12)

This is a custom private tour experience for those willing to pay for it. It’s designed for groups up to 20 people and you get to choose from a list of locations in Fenway Park you would like to see up close. You also get the undivided attention of a Fenway Park tour guide.

Contact Fenway Park for Pricing

Lastly, you can even tour Fenway Park from the comfort of your home using your computer or smartphone. We’re talking, of course, about a virtual drone tour. This particular tour lasts 40 minutes and is narrated by a Red Sox announcer. An in-person tour is certainly more fun, but this option is available for groups of ten or more people, making it suitable for corporate events, families, and more.

Where to Buy Fenway Park Tour Tickets

The best place to buy Fenway Park tour tickets is on the Red Sox website . You can book a tour up to 30 days in advance and choose the time slot that works best for you. You can also buy tickets through a third-party tour site such as GetYourGuide , GoCity , or Viator . Sometimes the tour is included as part of a package to see other Boston attractions. Definitely shop around and weigh your options for the best deal and tour that fits your needs.

The only discounts currently available for Fenway Park tours are discounts for active and retired military members for the public tour.

We recommend signing up for the official Boston Red Sox newsletter, as sometimes there are giveaways or promotions offered for tour tickets.

Fenway Park tours are fully accessible for individuals who use wheelchairs. Elevators are available to transport tour attendees in wheelchairs to various levels of the ballpark.

Insider Tips: What to Know Before You Tour Fenway Park

Finally, we have some tips to help you prepare for your Fenway Park tour and get the most enjoyment from the experience. The last thing anyone wants is to miss the tour because they don’t know the best way to get into the city or discover the bag they brought with them is too big. These are important tips to know, so don’t skip over them!

This tip can never be stressed enough: leave your vehicle at home and take public transportation to Fenway Park . While there are several lots near the ballpark, the Boston area is notorious for its heavy traffic and delays—making it an absolute nightmare to drive to Fenway Park on game days. Not to mention,  parking near the stadium can be expensive .

Take the MBTA (“the T”) to the Kenmore stop on the B, C, or D Green line , and Fenway Park is a short five-minute walk away. When you exit the station, you’ll see signs guiding you to the ballpark. Take a left on Commonwealth Ave., another left onto Brookline Ave., then go over the bridge.

You’ll save yourself time, money, and stress by taking the T and will also get to meet some fellow Red Sox fans by taking public transportation. It’s hard to beat that!

If you must drive to the stadium, the Red Sox site has a page dedicated to the best lots to park at depending upon the direction you’re entering the city from along with their rates and an option to reserve a spot online.

According to one of the experienced tour guides, you walk the equivalent of 1.25 miles during the one-hour tours. That’s a lot of steps, so comfortable, supportive footwear is a must.

Be prepared for periods of standing and climbing stairs as well. Many tour attendees say it can be a workout. Elevators are available to get to various levels of the ballpark if you need a reprieve.

As an aside, don’t be surprised if your tour group is on the larger side (we told you these tours were popular!) The tour guides use a microphone to ensure everyone can hear them clearly. Sometimes larger groups are split up into two separate ones, each with their own tour guide.

Fenway Park does not provide water or other refreshments for tour groups, so be sure to bring water (in a sealed bottle 16 ounces or smaller) to stay hydrated if you’re taking the tour on a hot day. We also recommend sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen.

Fenway has a pretty strict bag policy: bags must be no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ and single compartment only. The ballpark does NOT allow backpacks (or backpack-style purses), duffle bags, and bags with multiple compartments.

Exceptions are made for diaper bags and bags that carry essential medical equipment. Any bags that don’t meet the requirements can be stored with a third-party locker company on the top of the Lansdowne Garage or a nearby liquor store. Note that a fee will be charged to do so. To be on the safe side and avoid missing the beginning of a tour, we recommend taking a fanny pack or other small bag that safely meets the size restrictions.

All tour participants are also required to pass through security screening before entering the ballpark. We recommend reading the Fenway Park security page for a list of prohibited items and more about the bag policy.

Much like Red Sox games, Fenway Park tours tend to sell out. They go on sale 30 days in advance (so if you visit the website on November 1 you will only be able to purchase tickets for tours taking place through December 1.)

A tour of Fenway Park is absolutely worth it! There’s a reason why Fenway is called America’s most beloved ballpark. Its features, layout, and quirks are unlike any other major league baseball stadium in the nation.

Taking a tour during the fall or winter months is a fun way to keep the fan spirit alive after the season has ended. Even if you’ve been a long-time Boston Red Sox fan, chances are you will learn something you never knew on a tour.

  • Pre-game Attractions for Fenway Park

There are lots of things to see and do around the ballpark before the gates open, so plan to arrive early.

Dependnding on the length of your stay in Boston, you can check out the Freedom Trail, U.S.S. Constitution or any of the other scores of tourist-friendly sights in Beantown. Before the Red Sox game, though, focus on the spots to see around Fenway Park. At the center of the pre-game festivities is Yawkey Way, which runs along the west side of the ballpark. One side of the street is lined with merchandise shops and eateries, including the team’s official merchandise shop, while the brick building on the other side of the street needs no introduction. On game days, you’ll find a variety of types of entertainment, including live music, games for kids and stilt walker Big League Brian. Before weekend games, you can also sit to have your likeness captured in a caricature. Yawkey Way is essentially an outdoor concourse and is blocked off to vehicles three hours before game time. You’re free to wander around the street but shortly before gates open, you’ll be asked to retreat to either end and re-enter with your ticket. If you don’t get time to tour Yawkey Way before the game, you’re free to return during the game, provided you don’t leave the area.

If you’re hungry before the game and want a fun, sports-centric atmosphere, look no further than the Bleacher Bar. One of the most unique eateries you’ll find in baseball, this bar is actually located inside Fenway Park’s outfield fence. With a bit of luck, you’ll be able to score a seat at one of the window openings and watch pre-game activities on the field. The Bleacher Bar has an extensive beer menu and typical sports bar fare. It gets packed in the hours leading up to game time, so consider an early visit to ensure you get a spot.

Jerry Remy’s is located on Boylston Street, within the shadow of Fenway Park. Named after the former Red Sox infielder and current team broadcaster, Remy’s has an extensive food and drink menu and is notable for its rooftop bar. It’s always packed on game days. Boston Beer Works and Cask ‘n Flagon are located on the corner of Brookline Avenue and Lansdowne Street on Fenway Park’s northwest corner. Like Remy’s, both establishments are also popular spots and provide a perfect venue for enjoying a pre-game snack or drink and watching the pedestrian traffic. In 2007, Cask ‘n Flagon appeared on ESPN’s top-10 list of sports bars and restaurants. Game On!, located on Lansdowne Street, is another pre-game hotspot.

Regardless of how early you get to the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and take a lap or two around the perimeter of Fenway Park. The whole neighborhood breathes Red Sox baseball, and whether you’re looking for a spot to grab a Sam Adams, buy a Red Sox cap or just take photos, the pre-game experience is one of the best you’ll find in baseball. Be sure to take in the World Series banners along Yawkey Way and the retired number banners along Van Ness Street. Especially photo worthy is the statue called “Teammates,” which features Red Sox greats Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio. At the mouth of Yawkey Way, keep an eye out for the NESN pre-game show and you might be able to spot longtime baseball personality Peter Gammons. Give yourself plenty of time; the park’s gates open 90 minutes before first pitch, and you’ll want to get inside as soon as you’re able.

If you want to be sure you don’t miss a thing during your visit to Fenway Park, buy a ticket for the ballpark tour, which runs on game days and off-days alike. The tour weaves its way through the historic ballpark and includes a stop on the Green Monster, which is ideal if you’re not lucky enough to score Monster tickets for the game. Tour tickets are available at the ticket office on Yawkey Way.

What is Yawkey Way in Boston?

Yawkey Way is the longtime name of the city’s Jersey Street, which runs adjacent to Fenway Park. It’s closed before and during Red Sox games and has a lively atmosphere.

Are there sports bars around Fenway Park?

There are all sorts of sports bars within walking distance of Fenway Park, giving you plenty of options for a pre-game drink or snack. Popular choices are the Cask ‘n Flagon and Lansdowne Pub.

Can you take a tour of Fenway Park?

Fenway Park tours run daily during the baseball season and off-season. Taking part in a tour gives you a chance to visit many areas throughout the historic park, including the Green Monster.

When do the Fenway Park gates open?

As a born-and-bred Bostonian, there’s a special place in my heart for my hometown, and right at the center is none other than Fenway Park. You see, it wasn’t just where my husband and I watched our first game together; it’s sort of where our love story began.

fenway tours before game

But this place isn’t just my favorite ballpark; it’s a testament to Boston’s spirit and an iconic piece of American history. Everyone should get the experience of visiting Fenway, and taking an insider Fenway Park tour is a fantastic way to do so. Even if you’ve only got one day to spend in Boston , Fenway Park should be on your list of must-see places.

Why Take A Fenway Park Tour?

Fenway Park tours give you great views.

Picture yourself in the heart of Boston, surrounded by history, a cool breeze in the air, and the faint sounds of cheering fans. That’s the beginning of your Fenway Park tour experience, and trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

Built in 1912, Fenway Park is a living relic, standing proudly as the oldest ballpark in the country. Over the past century, it has witnessed countless legendary moments, from Babe Ruth’s pitching prowess (and the heated rivalry that was created when he got traded to the Yankees) to Ted Williams’s iconic swings.

So, why take a Fenway Park tour? Well, first and foremost, it’s a journey back in time. Fenway Park is a living, breathing monument to the sport of baseball and a testament to Boston’s undying love for its Red Sox.

But Fenway Park’s story extends far beyond baseball. It’s seen the nation through both World Wars, hosted political rallies, concerts, and even religious gatherings. It’s where passionate Red Sox fans have come together to celebrate, mourn, and create lifelong memories.

The park’s architecture itself is a testament to the enduring charm of yesteryears. The famous Green Monster, that towering left-field wall, has tales of its own. The iconic Citgo sign beyond the wall has watched over Boston for decades. And the intimate feel of the park, with its quirky angles and unique dimensions, sets it apart from the cookie-cutter stadiums of today.

As a Boston native, I’ve seen countless games here, but each time I take a tour, I’m reminded of the rich history that surrounds this iconic place. Taking a Fenway Park tour allows you to experience the ballpark in a completely different way than if you’re there to watch the Red Sox play.

The most popular  Public Tour is an hour long, during which you’ll be made privy to all the fun facts and stats about the park and the team. Then, sit in some of the most historically significant seats in the park before heading down to the field where the magic happens. Make sure your camera’s ready as you sit atop the infamous Green Monster. Check out the press box, and then browse the team’s memorabilia, like World Series trophies and retired uniforms.

If you’re crunched for time sign up for Fenway in Fifteen . You’ll still see all the highlights, like the view from the Right Field Roof Deck, which allows you to see the entire park and beyond into the city of Boston.

What Makes the Fenway Park Tours Special?

Fenway Park is the oldest currently used baseball stadium in the nation! It first opened in 1912, and while it has gone through numerous renovations it is still the home to Red Sox history. The only other stadium that comes close in age is Wrigley Field, which held its opener in 1914.

What Else Is in the Neighborhood?

If you’re looking for a place to stay after the game check out The Verb Hotel. The hotel’s cool mid-century design combined with colorful stained glass and wall-to-wall windows add to the rock and roll vibe. Before you head to your room, stop into the House of Blues on Lansdowne for some live music and a bite to eat.

Who’ll Have the Most Fun on a Fenway Park Tour?

You don’t have to be a Red Sox fan to enjoy a tour of Fenway Park (even Yankees fans will revel the nostalgic atmosphere). If you like the sport of baseball, even a little bit, you will find the tour intriguing. Very young children may get bored, but older kids will have the best time of their life! The tours also make a great date for couples.

Ah, the Boston Red Sox. New Englanders are serious about their sports teams, and Red Sox fans are a rabid bunch. Watching a game on TV is one thing, but there is nothing like seeing a Red Sox game at Fenway Park .

The sights, the sounds, the smells, the history. If only those green walls could talk.

As great as it is to be in the stands, a trip to Fenway does require some planning. The park is in the middle of the city, traffic is always an issue in Boston , and parking can be difficult and expensive.

  • The Kids Concourse at Fenway – What You Need to Know

Getting to Fenway Park

I’m not going to lie here, guys. Getting to Fenway can be a bear. Boston traffic isn’t fun on a good day, and game days are much worse. My advice is to give yourself plenty of time to sit in traffic or take the T from a nearby town.

Fenway Park Address

As you get in the cah to drive to the pahk, enter Fenway Park’s address, 4 Jersey St, Boston, MA., into your GPS and go!

Fenway Park Gates

There are six entrance gates to Fenway Park.

  • Gate A : Corner of Jersey Street and Brookline Avenue
  • Gate B : Corner of Van Ness Street and Ipswich Street
  • Gate C : Lansdowne Street
  • Gate D : Corner of Jersey Street and Van Ness Street
  • Gate E : Lansdowne Street near Brookline Avenue
  • Gate K: This is the entrance to the Kids Concourse , located next to Gate B on the corner of Van Ness Street and Ipswich Street

The closer you can get to your gate, the better. But really, park wherever it’s convenient. Parking is at a premium, and Fenway is small, so you can find your seat without a problem, regardless of which gate you enter through.

Fenway Park Gates

Parking at Fenway

If you can, consider taking the T into the city. Parking is expensive, and most lots require cash, so bring plenty.

How Much Is Parking Near Fenway?

Parking is expensive near Fenway. Depending on when you arrive or how close you want (or need) to park, you will likely pay between $40 and $60 to park in a lot or garage.

Gas stations, hotels, and other businesses also sell parking spots for the game, and their prices depend on how close to the park the lot is. My best advice is to arrive as early as possible, be prepared, and carry enough cash.

The cheaper lots fill up fast and require that you get to the park super early. The cheaper lots are usually not very close to the park, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Where to Park Near Fenway

The lots and garages below are located right next to or within a block of Fenway Park. These aren’t the only lots in the area, but they are some good choices we’ve used.

Remember that parking this close to the park will cost approximately $60, and some lots may only take cash. There are less expensive lots located further away, and also keep an eye out for business and gas station parking lots offering Red Sox parking.

  • Priority Parking – 819 Beacon St, at the corner of David Ortiz Dr. and Maitland St. This lot is two and a half blocks from the Jersey Street entrance of Fenway Park. The Lansdowne T station is also located here on David Ortiz Dr.
  • Van Ness Garage – 1325 Boylston St. The Van Ness parking garage is located on the block of Van Ness St, Richard B. Ross Way, and Boylston St. It is conveniently located a quick block away from Fenway.
  • 55 Jersey Street – This small lot is located on the corner of Jersey St., and Van Ness St. Since this is a small lot, it could fill up fast, so plan to arrive when the Fenway gates open 90 minutes before the game.
  • 51 Van Ness St. Parking – A small lot located across the street from the Jersey St. lot and next to the Jersey Street (Gate D) entrance to Fenway Park.
  • Lansdowne Garage – 47 Lansdowne St. Located directly behind the Green Monster side of Fenway and just down the street from The House of Blues.
  • 49 Lansdowne St. – This lot of located next to the Lansdowne Garage and near the famed Cask n’ Flagon.

The Best Places to Park Near Fenway Park

Use this Fenway parking guide  to determine the best places to park near Fenway for the direction you will be arriving from.

To avoid driving around in circles, you can also compare prices and buy a parking pass beforehand . Buy your pass early because spots will sell out before game day.

There are also options for grabbing something to eat before the Red Sox game near these parking options. Nearby restaurants include Wahlburgers, the Yard House, and Cask n’ Flagon, to name a few.

Tips for Going to a Red Sox Game at Fenway Park

How early can you get into fenway park before a game.

The gates open 90 minutes before the game. Plan to get there early because there is a lot to see and do. Grab a bite to eat, buy some souvenirs, and listen to a brass band play.

There is also plenty of entertainment for the kids. Play catch, get their picture taken with Big League Brian, the stilt walker, get their face painted, visit the balloon artist, and watch the juggler. If you are there on the weekend, look for the caricature artist for a one-of-a-kind souvenir.

If you’re a Red Sox Nation member, show your valid ticket to the day’s game to watch batting practice from the Green Monster 20 minutes before the gates open.

Where is the Best Place to Sit at Fenway Park?

The best place to sit is subjective. If you use this interactive Fenway Park seating chart , you can click on a section, which will pull up the approximate view of the field that you will have from that section.

We all have our personal preferences, but when purchasing tickets to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park, we prefer not to sit in the Grandstand area under the pavilion. These seats are under the overhang and can be hot and behind the poles.

Because of this, you can end up paying good money for an obstructed view of the game.

Obstructed view seats at Fenway Park

Obstructed View Seats at Fenway

When a ticket is marked as obstructed view , don’t assume that you might have to look around an awkward corner of the park. No. Tickets marked as obstructed view likely mean you will have a large pole blocking your view of the game.

Even if a ticket isn’t labeled as obstructed view, you could still have a pole somewhere in the area that will block something within your sight.

A word of caution is to avoid buying a ticket in the Grandstand section, period.  We’ll happily take a bleacher seat over a Grandstand seat any day of the week.

This was our view from the bleachers. Not bad .

Fenway Park Bag Policy

The Fenway Park bag policy was updated in 2023.

Fenway is allowing larger bags again, but they must be a single compartment and no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ . Backpacks (including clear backpacks) or backpack-style purses, duffel bags, and other multi-compartment bags aren’t allowed inside the park.

The bag policy at Fenway doesn’t apply to essential medical bags and equipment or diaper bags. If you are bringing a baby to the game, diaper bags are allowed as long they can fit under your seat.

Hard-sided coolers are not allowed in the park, regardless of their size.

All bags are subject to search at the entrance gates, so be sure you do not have any items in your bag that aren’t allowed in Fenway Park.

Find out more about Fenway Park’s rules and policies: Complete Guide of Fenway Park Rules You Need to Know

What is Not Allowed in Fenway Park?

  • Utility tools (even if they’re on a keychain)
  • Hard-sided coolers
  • Glass containers, bottles, cans, or metal water bottles
  • Pepper spray or mace
  • Laser pointers or any other item that could interfere with the game

  • Costumes and masks
  • Noisemakers
  • Offensive clothing items. If you wouldn’t wear it to visit grandma, don’t wear it to the game.
  • Professional camera and video equipment, including tripods and monopods.

What Can You Bring Inside Fenway Park?

  • One sealed plastic water bottle, 16 oz or smaller
  • Strollers that you can fold and store under your seat

There are also smaller team stores located inside the park, which comes in handy if you need a blanket or sweatshirt during the game. Been there!

47 Brand also has a great selection of Red Sox gear to purchase before the game, and it’s the same brand they sell inside the park.

What is the Best Thing to Eat at Fenway Park?

Fenway park food.

Ballpark food has stepped up its game over the years. There are so many food choices at Fenway, and everything we’ve ever had has been good.

When we visit Fenway, we usually go simple and get burgers and fries. We also enjoy Sal’s and Regina pizza. Other food options at Fenway include fried dough, chicken tenders, chowder, Italian sausage, snacks, sweets, and more.

Of course, a game at Fenway Park isn’t complete without trying the iconic Fenway Frank.

Whether you want a hot dog or sushi, the chances are that you can get it at Fenway Park. I could easily devote a whole post entirely to their food options, and I probably will, at some point, but for now, check out Ballpark Guides’ complete Fenway Park menu .

No, luggage storage isn’t available inside Fenway, but services are located near Fenway that offer luggage storage.

Can You Buy Red Sox Tickets at the Gate?

Red Sox tickets for a game at Fenway Park tend to sell out pretty quickly. Because of this, I find that the easiest way to purchase tickets to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park is online.

You can print tickets at home or send them to the MLB Ballpark app, which is my method of choice. This way you don’t have to worry about forgetting or losing your tickets because, let’s be honest, you probably won’t forget to bring your phone. Just scan each ticket into the scanner at the gate and enjoy the game!

Do You Need to be Vaccinated to Go to a Red Sox Game?

Fenway Park is once again opened up to full capacity for all games. Fenway Park follows the Boston city rules regarding the requirement of the COVID-19 vaccine in all indoor spaces, which includes attending a baseball game at Fenway.

Guests no longer need to wear a mask while attending a game at Fenway Park, but it is encouraged for unvaccinated or immunocompromised guests to continue to wear a mask.

As of March 5, 2022, guests are no longer required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend a game . Because things can change, check the Red Sox website health and safety section for current health and vaccine policies.

Do you need a test or proof of vaccine to enter game day?

I don’t believe so. Tickets are sold in pods so people can be distanced, masks and a health screening are also required. https://www.mlb.com/redsox/ballpark/safety

Do you sell ponchos or some kind of rain gear at the gate for the concerts?

I am not affiliated with Fenway or the Red Sox so you will have to check their website to see. I know they sell ponchos for games, but I don’t know if the same is true for concerts.

Are you allowed to bring seat cushions into the stadium?

Seat cushions aren’t on either the allowed or prohibited lists so I can’t answer definitively if they would be allowed. In most cases items that fit under your seat (or on, in this case) like diaper bags and umbrella strollers are allowed, but they’ve limited the size of bags allowed in the park this season so I’m not sure if they will be picky about a cushion.

So, to make a long story short, if I were you I would bring it with the thinking that you might have to bring it back to your car or pay a vendor to hold it for you. (My husband forgot to take his multi-tool off his keychain once and a vendor just outside the gate was happy to hold it for a few bucks).

What time do the parking lots open at Fenway?

It really depends on the lot. There isn’t a designated parking lot for Fenway, but there are a lot of private lots in hotel and service station parking lots nearby that have their own hours but will be open a few hours before the game. Most garages in the area are 24 hours or open really early in the morning as they are full-time garages.

Hi. I have two questions. 1.How early I have to arrive in a bobblehead night to catch one? 2. If I can’t bring a bag in to the stadium, then I can’t buy anything at the Jersey st store?

We will be at tomorrow’s game as well and from our email about the bobbleheads it says you can pick them up when gates open at 5:40 inside the Team Store on Jersey St. until the end of the 4th inning. We went to the Star Wars Night game a couple of years ago and they had plenty of the bobbles available when we got ours.

As far as merchandise, I would assume that they make exceptions for bags from the team store, BUT if you don’t feel comfortable chancing it, the team store is open for 30 minutes after the last out.

Are Sunday afternoon games generally well attended compared with other games at Fenway? Wondering if we should wait to buy tickets, or purchase online now.

I wouldn’t wait too long. Even if there are tickets available closer to game day, you’ll have much better options the sooner you buy them.

Fenway is always crowded and weekends, especially day games, are especially popular.

Reviews for Fenway Park Tour

Here are some reviews for Fenway Park tours to make your trip easier.

A great way to learn about Fenway Park and its history

This tour is highly recommended! knowledgeable guide and we enjoyed the whole tour. We were surprised to see a vegetable garden within the Ballpark! The tour covers fascinating history and combined with Money Ball being filmed here and having the chance to visit the press room made it more worthwhile.

Our schedule was such that we watched a game first and then did the tour – maybe the other way round would have been better but non the less we had a fantastic time. Thankyou

Alka K, Tripadvisor

So glad we booked this tour

Our whole family loved the tour. Guide was excellent. Neat experience from all angles of the park including at the Green Monster and in the press booth. A must do experience even if you are not a Red Sox fan.

Elizabeth F, Tripadvisor

Typical boston and it fit perfectly

The tour guide had the accent and he knew his baseball. We sat in every corner of the stadium and heard all about the history of the building and some of the stars playing there.

I learned about the Green Monstah and I got to sit on it! The way the guide talked, you could almost hear the games going on. Like if these walls could talk kinda. I took so many photos I could make a 3D rendering of almost all of the place. You really get to see every level including their rooftop garden! So cool. This was my first tour of a stadium and I enjoyed it.

I would like to know more of the technical upgrades to the stadium. When did they get wifi and what other tech is employed to make the game watching experience better

Savannah Bananas take duck boat tour of Boston before Fenway game

BOSTON (WHDH) - The Savannah Bananas are shipping up to Boston.

As part of their “Banana Ball World Tour,” the baseball team is slated to play at Fenway Park on Saturday. The bananas will be facing off against their biggest rival, the Party Animals, in an afternoon filled with dancing and skits.

This is the team’s first year playing in major league stadiums after touring a number of minor league parks last year — including Brockton’s Campinelli Stadium.

“It’s going to be unreal, it’s going to be like a movie. We’ll probably pinch ourselves a couple of times, but seeing the Monster for the first time is probably going to be the most special thing about it,” said player Noah Niznik.

On Friday, Dunkin’ welcomed the team to the city by giving them a tour in a personalized duck boat.

“Do you want wicked large or something,” the teammates yelled from the duck boat.

The boat stopped at Kenmore Square, where the team surprised fans with gift cards, donut samples and even tickets to Saturday’s game. And the Bananas say Boston is already one of their favorite stops so far.

“Honestly, the best we’ve had yet. The people, the city. It’s just nothing but good vibes so far, for the short time we’ve been here,” Niznik said.

The Savannah Bananas are shipping out to Boston for a sold-out game at Fenway Park

fenway tours before game

If you’ve ever been to a Savannah Bananas game, then you have certainly heard the unmistakable drop of the bass piano followed by the pluck of the banjo strings from the Dropkick Murphys' biggest hit, “Shipping Out to Boston.”  The catchy instrumental riff repeats throughout the player introductions before the start of each game.

Well, this week, the Savannah Bananas are actually shipping out to Boston with nearly 250 people and four semi-trucks loaded with all of the merchandise, production equipment, inflatables, and everything needed to put on one of the organization's biggest shows of the season Saturday at historic Fenway Park .

While the Bananas have performed this season for crowds ranging in size from 5,000 at Historic Grayson Stadium in Savanah to 41,000 at Minute Maid Park in Houston, for many, including team owner Jesse Cole, the 37,000 at Fenway may be the most meaningful.

Cole grew up just south of Boston and was able to go to a lot of Red Sox games as a kid. “I was an honorary batboy when I was 5 years old. So, it's been in my blood. I've seen countless games at Fenway Park and I always dreamed of playing for the Red Sox.”

Although Jesse has had some on-the-field experience at Fenway pitching in an all-star game when he was 20 years old, this weekend will be next-level entertainment for the man in the yellow tux. The Savannah Bananas have transformed from a Savannah team selling a handful of tickets to a worldwide sensation selling out major league ballparks and putting Banana Ball in front of over a million fans this year. More than 200,000 fans signed up just for the chance to purchase tickets at Fenway.

“It's certainly an adjustment, but, we've had so much experience over the last two years,” said Cole. “We played in a 41,000-seat stadium, sold-out Houston Minute Maid Park back in March. So, we had the experience there. So, it's a bigger show. We think about how do we impact 41,000. But, what was crazy was after the first game in Houston, Roy Oswalt came off the mound ― an all-star pitcher for the Astros ― and said it was louder than any World Series game he’s been a part of. So, to hear that from a major league star, see how loud the experience was. The 41,000. It sounds like we've been able to translate our intimate show to a much larger show.”

As game day draws closer Jesse and the crew are working hard to make sure everything is perfect. Rehearsals will take place right up until showtime on Saturday to assure they can showcase the game in the best way possible. The festivities will begin at 2 p.m. with a pre-party and pre-plaza show, before the 7 p.m. game time, giving fans plenty of time to soak up all they can of “Banana Land.”

“Fenway Park is the mecca. It is the most well-known baseball stadium in the world. And for us to get to play it and sell it out is something I never would have imagined,” said Cole. “Just because of the history of the ballpark and what's happened there and the memories and the moments and ones that I've gone through and experienced, now for us to create our own memory and moment in front of a sold-out crowd is pretty special.”

Fenway Park goes bananas as Savannah Bananas bring ‘world tour’ to Boston

The Savannah Bananas sold out Fenway Park on Saturday night as the team brought its “Banana Ball World Tour” to Boston.

The Savannah Bananas sold out Fenway Park on Saturday night as the team brought its “ Banana Ball World Tour ” to Boston, attracting thousands of fans dressed in bright yellow and ready for a fun-filled game.

About 37,000 fans filled the stands to see the Bananas face off against their longtime rival, the Party Animals. The Bananas, an exhibition team known for their fan-focused brand of flashy and often comic baseball, have sold out every game since their first season in 2015.

Adding to any Red Sox fan’s excitement, former Sox players Jonathan Papelbon, Mitch “2-bags” Moreland, Jonny Gomes, and Bill “Spaceman” Lee played for the Bananas at the Boston game.

Despite their efforts, the Party Animals beat the Bananas 4-1. But for both teams, the game was filled with song, dance, and celebration — classic staples of “Banana Ball.”

Before the game, the Bananas greeted fans under the grandstands with high fives. Fans were kept excited throughout the game, catching doughnuts tossed into the stands and chanting along with “The Dad Bod Cheerleading Squad.”

Some players stepped up to the plate wearing kilts, an essential part of the Bananas’ uniform. One Banana, known as Dakota “Stilts” Albritton, towered over the others on stilts during the game.

Meanwhile, the Party Animals put on a show of their own. While a clip from the movie “Legally Blonde” played on the big screens, the team performed the iconic “bend and snap” move from the 2001 romantic comedy set at Harvard Law School.

After sunset, the field was illuminated with cellphone flashlights while the crowd sang “Yellow” by Coldplay. One fan called the Fenway Park game “truly electric” in a social media post .

The next stop on the Bananas’ tour is Nashville.

Alex Verdugo taunts Fenway Park after homering in first return game

T hroughout the week with the first New York Yankees - Boston Red Sox matchup of the 2024 season, there has been a lot of talk about now-Yankees and former Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo making his first return to Fenway Park for the first matchup against his former team.

For the most part, Verdugo seemed to be a mature good sport in handling all of the questions he received. He was complimentary of the Red Sox organization and his time there, though he did take some shots at the former front office regime and their lack of activity, something most fans in Boston likely had to agree with.

But once the first pitch of the series came across the dish, Verdugo quickly turned from former player making a kind return to a villain inside Fenway Park.

Alex Verdugo homers in return to Fenway, taunts Red Sox fans

It started when Verdugo took the first pitch he saw from Brayan Bello and tattooed it 406 feet to dead-center over the wall for a monster two-run home run. But he then added insult to injury with a fired-up trot around the bases as he looked at the Red Sox fans in the crowd and told them this was his house and continued to taunt the now-opposing fans as he crossed home plate to give the Yankees an early 2-0 lead.

Verdugo was a bit of a lightning rod for controversy throughout his time with Boston, whether it was questions about his effort, clashes with Alex Cora and the front office, or any given thing. That's ultimately likely what led to him being traded to the Yankees this offseason in a rare trade between the two rivals after the Red Sox acquired Tyler O'Neill from the St. Louis Cardinals.

But over most of that time, Red Sox fans continued to support Verdugo and believe him. And while Verdugo had no real say as to which team he was trade to, the fact that he's now playing for the Evil Empire and taunting the fans in Fenway Park as he did immediately on Friday night makes it sting even more keenly than it otherwise would.

Highlights from the 2024 NBA playoffs Larry O'Brien Trophy tour

fenway tours before game

As the 2024 NBA Finals wind down, the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy is preparing for a new owner.

The Boston Celtics can grasp the trophy with a win against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, which would complete a four-game sweep for their 18th championship.

A win would give Boston a 16-2 record in the 2024 postseason, making them the sixth team to lose two or fewer games in the playoffs since the current playoff format began in 1984, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Larry O'Brien Trophy is named after the NBA commissioner from 1975 to 1984. O'Brien played a key role in the ABA-NBA merger in 1976 and in the adoption of the 3-point line in 1979.

The 29-pound trophy has had a busy build up to the Finals, traveling to various locations during its annual postseason tour. From London to Miami, here are highlights of the Larry O'Brien Trophy tour during the 2024 NBA playoffs.

Amid waning fan interest, Fenway Park becoming much friendlier to opposing clubs

But lately, Fenway has become a much friendlier place.

Six years removed from the club’s last World Series championship in 2018 the Red Sox have settled into a pattern of mediocrity, and interest in the team has waned as a result. Saturday was just the team’s second sellout of the season — the first since Opening Day — and with so many tickets up for grabs, opposing fans have happily swooped in to fill the void.

Now, with the weather getting nicer and school wrapping up for the year, opposing fan takeovers are becoming impossible to ignore.

This weekend a huge contingent of Yankees fans traveled to Boston and have made their presence felt, frequently belting out loud “Let’s go Yankees” chants at a volume and frequency that would have seemed unthinkable just a few years ago.

That came after fans of the Philadelphia Phillies inundated Fenway Park earlier this week, and before that we saw similar crowds surge in from Baltimore, Atlanta and other cities.

The Red Sox still get plenty of support on the road too, but until recently Fenway Park was a fortress, and manager Alex Cora acknowledged that the phenomenon is a product of their recent performance.

“I think people are more willing to travel and follow their teams, it’s not an excuse, it should be a lot better here as far as our fans showing up for us, but at the same time we haven’t been good for a while,” Cora said. “So there’s a balance and hopefully sooner rather than later we can change that, change the narrative and have it be 80-20%.”

Whether the increased number of road fans has affected Boston’s performance is impossible to say, but it can’t be debated the Red Sox haven’t played well at home recently. This season the club was 16-20 at home entering Saturday, including a 1-11 mark in series openers at Fenway Park.

Even dating back to 2019, a stretch that includes three last place finishes but also a deep playoff run, the Red Sox entered Saturday 196-195 at Fenway Park, almost exactly .500.

But what do players think when an opposing team’s chants break out at Fenway? Tanner Houck, one of Boston’s longest tenured players and currently its best pitcher, offered a nuanced perspective.

“Crowds, good or bad, supply energy,” Houck said. “The other night when I gave up three runs to (Kyle) Schwarber on the big hit, you heard this place erupt from all the Philly fans. Being in that moment it’s not a good thing by any means, you never want that to happen, you want your side going nuts after you get out of a situation like that, but crowds can supply energy for you, for each individual and I enjoy it.”

Houck noted that when he debuted in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic there weren’t any fans allowed in the stands, and it wasn’t until midway through 2021 that he experienced any sort of big league crowd. So it’s not something he takes for granted.

“It adds that element into the stadium that we’ve all dreamed about since we were little kids playing T-ball,” he said.

It’s the life of the UConn head coach.

“Till we lose,” Hurley said.

The 2024-25 Huskies were introduced by a video mashup of NCAA tournament highlights that brought most of the crowd to its feet, celebrating the second-consecutive national title the program earned in April.

Then Alex Karaban , the Southborough, Mass., native and only current Husky who started in each of the last two national title games, took to the mound. Karaban practiced over the weekend at UConn’s Elliot Ballpark with team managers and threw some more warmup pitches in front of the Red Sox dugout, but is still a baseball newbie and was worried about throwing a strike.

“I didn’t like what I saw from him in his practice tosses in the Werth Center,” Hurley said before the pitch. “He said he’s been practicing but it didn’t look like it. It was bad. This could go anywhere.”

Karaban wasn’t able to attend Fenway Park with the team last year, he was attending a camp in St. Louis run by Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum, when Donovan Clingan and Tristen Newton threw out first pitches. He did get to throw one, from a few feet in front of the mound, before a Worcester Red Sox game that earned him a reputation for throwing soft . His standard this time was based on the wild first pitch ex-Purdue star Zach Edey, who he worked out with leading into the NBA Draft Combine, threw way out of the zone at a Chicago Cubs game in May .

But Saturday’s first pitch was better than any of Karaban’s warmups. Red Sox first baseman and designated hitter Dominic Smith, not in the lineup Saturday, didn’t have to leave his crouch and barely moved his glove.

Call it a strike.

“I’m so happy it’s done now, I’m glad I didn’t embarrass the program,” Karaban joked, donning the red David Ortiz jersey he chose after the pitch.

The pressure was on for the hometown kid, in front of a packed house with all of his teammates and coaches lined up behind him. And his pitch was the one that began the second game of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry series.

But Karaban’s had a few homecomings in the last few months.

He helped UConn to a pair of wins in TD Garden, beating San Diego State and Illinois by a combined 55 points in March to punch their ticket back to the Final Four. He also worked out for the Boston Celtics – and the Portland Trail Blazers – before withdrawing from the NBA Draft and announcing his return to UConn.

“Sold out, Boston-New York rivalry, Hassan (Diarra’s) going to be chirping me in the background, he’s a Yankees guy. There’s a lot of factors that I can’t prepare for,” Karaban said.

“He’s home, he’ll be in Boston so hopefully he doesn’t embarrass himself,” Diarra, a New York City native, said Thursday. “But I’m hoping he does, because I’m gonna be recording. I want to go viral.”

Diarra ended up pumping his fist behind the mound and went to celebrate.

The UConn men's basketball program celebrated back-to-back national championships at Fenway Park with Alex Karaban throwing out the first pitch before a Red Sox-Yankees game on June 15, 2024. (Joe Arruda/Hartford Courant)

“This is probably going to be my favorite (stop on the celebration tour),” Karaban said. “The White House was cool (last year), going inside of it was something special, the parade is definitely up there, too. But my personal favorite is probably going to be the pitch today. As a Boston guy and a Red Sox guy, just being out in Fenway has definitely got to be my favorite thing.”

The reigning back-to-back champs are still finalizing a date, probably late-July, to visit the White House. Hurley is expected to throw out the ceremonial pitch ahead of another Red Sox-Yankees game, though at Yankee Stadium on July 6.

All of the celebratory excursions are good for team bonding, especially now with Karaban and Hurley each having made their decisions to return in the last couple of weeks. Those “distractions,” as Karaban called them, are out of the way now and full attention turns to contending for a three-peat.

“These guys got a standing ovation (after eating lunch in Boston), they get a sense of the bigness of this whole thing and how big the program is, for the people who haven’t been a part of it,” Hurley said, before an extended chat with Red Sox manager Alex Cora in the home dugout. “Last couple days have been awesome. Just good, hard practices, a lot of team-building and really putting this whole team together. (We’re) just using the summer to our advantage to try to gain as much ground on the other programs that aren’t doing as much as we’re doing right now.”
