“These folks are wonderful– exceptionally professional and knowledgeable . Everything I arranged through the agency (hotels, tours, transportation) went off without a hitch.I’m already planning a return trip to CR, and I will definitely be using this agency again.” — Rebecca_SD “The only hiccups in our trip were the 2 days on the front end which I attempted to book myself, the remaining 8 nights booked by Meghan at PTW were flawless . In addition, Meghan took the time to email me some suggestions for beaches and restaurants that thankfully were not in Fodor’s so we were able to get away from fellow tourists a couple of times.” — vrhodes

“Also can vouch for Toucan Maps Inc. [Costa Rica Guide] Have met the owners, lovely couple, very reliable .” — coopermays – Destination Expert

It’s ALL Good

We won’t complain about free publicity, especially since it’s all fantastic rave reviews, but in general TripAdvisor should be used cautiously ( read more… ).

Most people assume TripAdvisor is unbiased but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It is an advertising and marketing tool promoting Expedia.com. Anything that does not make money disappears from TripAdvisor very quickly.

Some of the reviews are honest, interesting, and useful. Some of the reviews are fabricated by professionals who are paid by hotels (or by marketing agencies hired by the hotels – the hotel owners don’t necessarily even know about it) to improve their rankings or drive down the competition.

If you want to find reviews for our company you have to look hard and often. Because we compete with Expedia, travel services like Toucan (mapcr.com and Costa-Rica-Guide.com) are not allowed listings in the directory. If a traveler does post a review in the travel forum they are generally deleted by the moderators.

We’re not complaining. They own the web site and have every right to delete the competition, and we’re not saying not to use TripAdvisor (especially since their users recommend us so highly), we’re just saying use it with caution.

First time using Tourradar and was extremely impressed. Everything ran on time and the vans and shuttles arrived exactly when they were supposed to according to my itinerary. It was so nice to have someone waiting at the airport when I landed and not to have to think about driving in a foreign country for five days. I ate more than I expected. So many meals were included and they are spaced according to the travel schedule to break up the 3 hour ride from one destination to the next. San Jose hotel was a Radisson that was perfectly situated to walk to the main part of the city during daylight hours. (I did take Ubers after dark) The hotel room did have a slight musty smell which I remember experiencing when I stayed at a couple hotels in Houston. Guess it comes with the humidity. The main parts of the hotel did not have that. The bar at the Radisson was very reasonable and the provided breakfast was very good. The resort hotel in the national park was beautiful but the cabins did not have A/C. From what I read, most of the resorts don't have AC in that area. It was very warm sleeping at night but it was only for one night and it was worth it to see a group of monkeys the next morning hanging out in the trees above the pool. Overall, very pleasantly surprised how smooth everything went and I will for future travel deals with Tourradar for my next vacation.
Very well organised, and seamless trsnsportation to all locations. Good variety of activities and climates. Great tour guides and wildlife!

This trip in Costa Rica was honestly such an amazing trip!! There was such a variety of activities and things you normally wouldn't get to experience (like the homestay with a local family). We got to experience all different environments from jungles to hot springs and ending in a beach paradise! Luis was THE best guide with amazing vibes and every food item he recommended was delicious and very south American/Costa Rican cuisine
This tour had the best of everything - stunning landscapes and wildlife, local community impact, adrenaline fuelled adventures and beautiful beaches and snorkelling. Our tour guide Luis did an incredible job of always bringing positive energy, making the group feel like a family and always having excellent food and drink recommendations and sorting restaurant and bar bookings for us. I honestly had the best trip and would recommend to anyone!!

This was a great tour. My 11 year old son & I had a great time exploring the nature of Costa Rica, the excitement of white water rafting and zip lining. Horseback riding was great with awesome views of the canyons. The Tarzan swing is a must do! All transfers were on time, and lodging was great. Highly recommend this tour!
Great adventures, tour guides on time and friendly. Overall nice experience however had very unexpected travel days of 9 hours car-boat-car that was not communicated and took up 2 days of our trip that could have otherwise been spent on vacation. Asked tour operator during tour who communicated incorrectly so we were unable to change our itinerary to avoid another wasted day. This was disappointing. Apparently the main bridge was closed a month prior to our arrival and planned closure for another 2 months. This would have been nice to know before we sat in a very cramped van- and good thing we don’t get too car sick.

The trip to Costa Rica organized by Culture Trip was incredible! It was a perfect way to experience a country, and was a perfect blend of adventure & relaxing. The accommodations were wonderful and the local insider tips and historical/cultural knowledge provided along the way by our guide were much appreciated. It was a great way to travel as a solo traveler or as a couple.

I travelled with Jonathan on the Costa Rica and Panama discovery trip with Intrepid in August 24. I really enjoyed the trip and the destinations we visited. It was a great mix of wildlife, rainforest, beach areas and city life for us to experience different cultures. Some of my highlights included Boca Del Toros and the boat trips and being able to spend time relaxing on lovely beaches and enjoy warm seas. The local cooking experience and stop in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca was also great fun.I also enjoyed the visit to the Panama Canal which was really interesting. Jonathan was super organised and helpful to the whole group, was happy to be flexible and change daily itineraries to give us more (or less ) time at places depending on what the group wanted and could not have done more to help the group have an awesome experience. Thank you Jonathan for looking after us and helping us all have such a great time 👍🏻 definitely a 10/10 from me and highly recommend the tour to others wanting a taste of Central America!
Amazing well thought out trip. Felt we saw a lot over yhe 17 days .Tour guide Juan was amazing.

First solo trip, RJ was the most amazing tour guide. The tour was very well organised. Would definitely recommend ?
This tour is designed for travelers who like unstructured time to plan their own adventures, especially active sports. Our previous visit to Costa Rica offered more programming that centered on nature(especially bird watching) and culture, which was more aligned with our interests.

Eric was an exceptional leader and provided an amazing experience for us. He is simply the best, very helpful and patient. The Itinerary was ideal for what i wanted to do, and overl G adventures did an amazing job. This was my first G adventure tour, i will definitely do another.
The scenery was very beautiful. The tour guide was very helpful and knowledgeable. The only concern was the hotel conditions. I heard rats running around behind walls in one hotel. Another had sweaty smell pillows and sheets. Seemed they were not changed between guests.

Thank you for the most enjoyable trip.. the guide was excellent. Answering any question . We learned so much about the animals and flora and fauna of the area we visited. This trip exceeded any expectations I had. And renewed my interst in photography. This is my 4 th trip with you and it seems it getting better. Thank you to all the staff who put together great packages.
Costa Rica was beautiful and the people were fantastic. There were some issues caused by poor organization/communication on the part of the travel planner. First, the Buena Vista del Rancon leg of the trip was very unexpected. The accommodations were spartan to say the least. it was like a rustic cabin with the following issues; no AC despite very hot and humid weather; No TV or phone with absolutely nothing to do at night; No hot water the bathroom in sink; tractor noise was ever present; there were bugs covering the sink in the morning; there were no chairs in the room except for one dressing table chair. We are campers so we are familiar with this scenario but it would have been nice to know this ahead of time. There was poor communications regarding the itinerary also.. We were given 2 itineraries that were inconsistent. These were then undone by the desk clerk who said we needed individual reservations for the activities on the itinerary and that we were not part of a group. She seemed impatient with us trying to get it straight.. Then the next day the same clerk asked why we did not show up for the group tour that was part of the itinerary that she said the previous day did not exist. This is a Rainforest adventure oriented place with a lot of uphill walking and few restaurant choices which is inappropriate for seniors. The place was beautiful, everyone but the clerk was fantastic and the activities were fun and interesting. There rain and mud every day so watch out for the rainy season, we thought we had just missed it but we did not. The second leg at the Wyndham in Tamarindo was very nice. The beach was beautiful and the hotel was nice. Be prepared for there being no AC in public areas(including the restaurant) however and again it was very hot and humid. We had to wait 3 hours for our airport transport in a sweltering lobby since checkout was 11 and the transport pick up was 2pm. The hotel in on a steep hill overlooking the city providing a great view but not walkable to the city or beach. The shuttle ran only once per hour so if you did not time your visit perfectly (hard to do with restaurant service etc.), you had to wait an hour on the curb. The airport Hampton was as expected for an airport hotel. New hotel with excellent service and a frequent "on time" shuttle to the airport.

This trip was a dream! Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise, the group was small and very friendly, our teenagers got along fabulously and Allan, the tour guide, did a great job of organizing everything and had an extensive knowledge of Costa Rica's wildlife and culture. Every day was a highlight and the abundance of scenery and animal sightings was hard to beat: wild tapirs, toucans, pumas, crocodiles, an abundance of exotic birds, monkeys, whales, dolphins. It is not for nothing that Costa Rica accounts for 5% of the world's biodiversity. The hotels were also fabulously selected and the transportation by minibus was comfortable and ideal. Costa Rica attaches great importance to environmental protection and sustainability and you can feel it. A fabulous trip through a great country full of natural beauty and friendly people!!!

Exodus Adventure Travels

Our guide, Alejandro Rodriguez, was fabulous - knowledgeable, articulate, courteous, energetic, and fun - but not everything on the tour was at the same level. Two of the four hotels we used did not have hot water. One of the hotels was very noisy and seemed more like a hostel than an actual hotel. The tours included with the package were of limited value (especially the night walk, which was not good). And, most importantly, booking of optional tours was less than optimal. Instead of enabling us to select and book the optional activities in advance, we were required to tell our guide the day before each activity. This led to a frantic scramble when one of the optional activities was sold out and we could not find an alternative. Our guide solved the problem (we unexpectedly received a private tour), but the situation could have been avoided had we been able to book in advance.
Lovely vitas and fabulous guide Edudardo Lopez, but tour descriptors sometimes lacking in detail and level of strenuous activities was minimized. One accommodation was impossible to endure in Cahuita do to level of mildew and mould in rooms. Had to go to a different accommodation for those three nights -for 2 couples - at own cost ($400 US per couple). We would not unconditionally recommend Exodus Tours to anyone in future. If you need more details contact us in person via email. [email protected] Our Tour guide was instrumental in helping to find last minute accommodation for the 2 couples. His efforts were exemplary!

We traveled to Costa Rica for the Discover Corps Wildlife Safari trip in March, 2021. We had to postpone and change our trip a couple times due to Covid, and I truly believe that it was meant to be. We had an amazing time! The country is so beautiful, the people are very hospitable, and we felt very safe throughout the entire trip. Our guide, Priscilla, was incredibly knowledgeable and thought of every last detail. She really catered to us and made sure we had the best possible experience. Our driver, Erick, was also fantastic. He was an excellent driver, helped us with our luggage, and was very fun and friendly. Every hotel we stayed at was immaculate and beautiful. The staff treated us like family everywhere we went. All the meals were delicious, and the restaurants all had great atmosphere. We really enjoyed learning all about Costa Rica and its rich history and the many unique animals that live there. All of the activities were wonderful as well. We visited a number of animal rescue centers and the biological center, and we went white water rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and we participated in a cooking lesson with delicious food. It was so hard to leave and go back to having to take care of ourselves after being treated like royalty during this fantastic experience. We definitely plan to take another Discover Corps trip again in the near future!
I recently returned from the Costa Rican wildlife safari. I was a bit concerned with Covid however every place was extremely clean and had places for you to wash your hands before you even walked in. This was a trip I was actually supposed to go on in 2020 however it was postponed, waiting so long the expectations were high. I was definitely not disappointed! Patricia our guide was absolutely wonderful, extremely knowledgeable and cater to our every need. I would highly recommend this vacation. Also everyone that I met in the community was extremely gracious and kind. The majority of these people work on tourism and unfortunately in the last year have not had any. Booking this trip would not only be an amazing adventure for you but it would also be amazing for the people in the community

I believe that the guide makes the experience, and our guide, German Rojas, was SUPERB!!!! From his leadership, knowledge, crowd-handling abilities to his grace and humor, he is an all-around 5-star guide! Don't lose him! I loved the itinerary, especially the wildlife watching opportunities. I personally would like maybe a little less time at Arenal volcano, with more time at either Tortuguero or Manuel Antonio, but I would definitely recommend this itinerary to friends and family!
The trip to Costa Rica was a wonderful experience between the nature, the Costa Rica folks and the food.

I would 100% recommend this tour - a wonderful way to explore Costa Rica. Our guide was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the country and wildlife. The hotels all had amazing views from the balcony, there was a good mix of included and optional activities, the food was really tasty, and we had a really nice group of 8. Everything is well organised and explained clearly along the way - I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to experience the wildlife and different regions of Costa Rica - you'll learn and see a lot :)
As first time Intrepid travellers we weren’t sure how we would like the small group tour. We were so happy we decided to try it. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with unbelievable scenery and lovely people. But what really made this trip special was our tour guide. His passion and knowledge of not only the flora and fauna but the history of his country was so incredibly rich. I came away with such a great appreciation for what this small country has achieved. He made sure all of our fellow travellers felt comfortable and I think since we were all like minded we had a great time together. The excursions were fun and again educational. The accommodations were in beautiful settings. What’s not to love? Pack your bags and enjoy!

Costa Rica Experience

9 days | travel through the jungles and beaches of costa rica – a real natural paradise.

Colourful tropical frog found in the Monteverde region, Costa Rica

Discover a region of natural diversity, cultural riches and laidback vibes on a nine-day jungle jaunt through Costa Rica. Thanks to a longstanding tradition of preserving its natural assets, much of the country’s primary rainforest still stands. Opportunities for nature-based activities are endless here and the beaches on both coasts are well worth your free time. Kick back in the rustic beach town of Quepos, explore the steamy cloud forests of Monteverde and get to know the locals by lending a hand on a rural farmstay near Santa Rosa de Pocosol. Explore the depths of this colourful and vibrant country with plenty of time to make this trip your own.

Trip overview

  • Try to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal when you’re exploring Monteverde’s steamy cloud forests. Better yet, why not consider a jungle zip-line to get high in the sky for the best views?
  • Spend time wandering through the Mercado Municipal de Artesanias artisan stalls in San Jose – Costa Rica’s cultural heart. With plenty of time to stop for a refresco (smoothie), this is a good opportunity to people-watch.
  • Lend a hand at a farmstay outside of Santa Rosa de Pocosol and learn some home-cooked recipes and techniques from the locals on a visit to the Juanilama agricultural community.
  • Marvel at the size and stature of the Arenal Volcano on the horizon, maybe taking a soak and relaxing in La Fortuna’s lava-heated thermal springs.
  • With plenty of time to chill out at your own pace, Quepos’ surf vibe is ideal for catching some waves, lazing on the white-sand beaches or hiking the lush trails of Manuel Antonio with your travel pals.
  • Many of the activities (both included and optional) on this trip take place in the great outdoors. This means you'll need to be prepared to deal with insects and occasionally rustic conditions. It's all part of immersing yourself in this natural paradise.
  • Costa Rica is generally hot and humid year-round, and from May to October can be wet too. At nighttime and in locations at higher elevations it can get chilly. Protect yourself from the sun, bring light clothing you can layer and a waterproof jacket, and stay hydrated. Please carefully consider which time of the year you'll feel most comfortable travelling.
  • There are many opportunities to get active on this adventure. Some of the optional activities require a moderate level of fitness and sturdy walking shoes. If you'd prefer to take it easy, however, there are plenty of other things you can do instead.
  • The homestay is a wonderful opportunity to witness everyday local life. A hearty homecooked dinner and breakfast will be served during your stay, which can be a lot more basic than what you're used to.
  • With so much to see and do, Costa Rica can sometimes be expensive. Expect to pay more than you would in other Central American countries for a lot of things.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2023 - 31 December 2024

Hola! Welcome to Costa Rica. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm today in San Jose. With over half the country's population living within its parameters, San Jose is a dynamic atmosphere. If you arrive early, why not wander around at your own pace – a good place to start exploring is the main plaza, perfect for some people watching. Tonight, maybe head out to get to know your group with an optional welcome dinner.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • San Jose - Pre-Colombian Gold Museum (Entrance fee) - USD17
  • San Jose - National Museum (entrance fee) - USD12

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Travel by private vehicle to Santa Rosa de Pocosol today, where you’ll spend the night in a homestay. Just down the road is the Juanilama agricultural community, where you can get to know the locals, help with farm chores, and take an informal cooking lesson. Several villagers have built comfortable rooms for guests next to their homes, and you’ll stay in one of them this evening. Please note that these rooms use shared facilities. In order to make the most of this homestay experience, it may take a bit of effort from your side to break the ice first. Learn as many Spanish words as you can before you arrive!

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Santa Rosa de Pocosol - Home-cooked Meal
  • Santa Rosa de Pocosol - Homestay experience
  • Leader-led Informal Spanish Lesson
  • Santa Rosa de Pocosol - Soap-making workshop - USD20
  • Santa Rosa de Pocosol - Waterfall hike - USD11

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Today, continue to La Fortuna – a small town situated just a few minutes away from Costa Rica's famous Arenal Volcano. Besides its panoramic views, the town offers a range of other activities such as the 70-m-high La Fortuna waterfall, stunning lush forest, rare plants, animal watching and water-based activities on the lake. The volcano’s inner workings also mean that the area has a number of thermal springs where lava-heated water gushes to the surface. These springs have been sculpted into several pools and waterfalls, making them the ideal place to relax. Spend the rest of the day as you please in this exciting town, maybe even testing your balance on a stand-up paddleboard.

  • La Fortuna - Ecotermales Hot Springs (entrance fee) - USD49
  • La Fortuna - La Fortuna Waterfall (Entrance only) - USD21
  • La Fortuna - Arenal 1968 Volcano View and Lava Trails (Entrance fee) - USD26

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Some of the above optional activity prices include an entrance fee only. Transportation will need to be paid in addition to the entrance fee and is subject to change depending on the number of participants.

Due to limited accommodation availability in La Fortuna, rooms will occasionally be on a multi-share basis (single gender).

Today, you’ll take the scenic route to Monteverde. Monteverde was founded as an agricultural community in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers – they cleared virgin forests to create verdant pastures ideal for dairy farming. These environmentally aware settlers were conscious of the danger that unrestricted settling and farming could cause to this precious habitat, so they established a small, privately owned wildlife sanctuary, which has grown to become the internationally renowned Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve. More than 2000 species of plants, 320 bird species and 100 different types of mammals call Montverde home. When you arrive, you can choose from a range of outdoor activities to wildlife spot, hike or cruise on the waters.

  • Monteverde - Cloud Forest Entrance
  • Monteverde - Cloud Forest Night Walk - USD45

Today is free for you to choose how you'd like to spend your time in this beautiful area. Maybe start your exploration with a tour of the suspension bridges that hang in the trees, or head to the Serpentarium to see some crawly critters. Watch butterflies at play in the specially created garden, hire a local guide to show you around the area, visit a community cooperative or zip-line through the lush canopy. Whatever you do, be sure to keep an eye out for the resplendent quetzal – one of the most elusive birds in the world.

  • Monteverde - Butterfly Garden and Insects Farm (entrance fee) - USD22
  • Monteverde - Coffee & Chocolate tour - USD47
  • Monteverde - Canopy Zip Lining (Entrance, Equipment & Transport) - USD65
  • Monteverde - Suspension bridges tour - USD58

Travel through the mountains to Quepos by private minibus. Located close to the beautiful Pacific beaches and exotic wildlife of Manuel Antonio National Park, Quepos is a laidback town with a vibrant nightlife. This afternoon, you'll get the chance to meet three generations of Costa Ricans and tuck into a traditional cooking class for lunch with them in their home. Prior to the pandemic, the family ran one of the most popular restaurants in Quepos for almost 20 years. Now, you're lucky to learn the secret flavours and spices of their traditional dishes and get to know the whole family. Once the sun goes down, why not grab a spot at a waterfront restaurant and sink your teeth into some fresh seafood with your travel crew – this is the life.

  • Manuel Antonio - Cooking Class & Lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Spend your time enjoying all that Manuel Antonio National Park has to offer with a free day today. Perhaps head out for a hike along one of the many trails, keeping one eye on the great views and the other looking for the abundant wildlife. Monkeys, armadillos, sloths and hundreds of birds are among the species you can spot here. The park also boasts turquoise seas and white-sand beaches – perfect for swimming, kayaking, sailing and fishing. It would be easy to spend your whole time here in, or by, the water.

  • Manuel Antonio National Park - (Entrance fee)
  • Manuel Antonio National Park - Tour with a Naturalist Guide
  • Manuel Antonio - Mangrove Kayak Activity (with lunch) - USD79
  • Manuel Antonio – Cruise - USD100

Visitor numbers to Manuel Antonio have been reduced from 3000 per day to 1000. This means it is more difficult to secure entrance tickets for both tour groups and individual visitors. Over school holidays and peak travel season, it is especially difficult. We do our best to secure entrance tickets, but it is possible that on occasion demand will be too high. In these instances, we will include a visit to Carara National Park, home to a variety of animals including crocodiles, monkeys, and two-toed sloths.

Take a public bus back to San Jose today, arriving back in time for you to pick up some last-minute souvenirs at the city's colourful and vibrant markets. Then, head out for an optional dinner and a night on the town, getting a taste of the huge variety of nightlife on offer here.

With no further activities planned, your trip comes to an end after breakfast today. If you’d like to extend your stay, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time.
