Is Denali a Mountain or a Park?

It’s both. Denali is the name of the tallest mountain in North America and the National Park & Preserve that surrounds it. Fun fact: the Park & Preserve area is larger than the entire state of New Jersey, so there is a lot to explore.

What are Alaska's Big 5?

Alaska’s “Big 5” animals are bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves. You can find them all in the Denali National Park & Preserve.

denali tour

Denali National Park and Preserve is a vast and breathtaking wilderness area that spans over six million acres. Its centerpiece is Denali, the highest peak in North America, towering at 20,310 feet. The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, encompassing taiga forests, alpine tundra, and snow-clad mountains. Established in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park, it was later renamed Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980, emphasizing the significance of the native Athabaskan name "Denali," meaning "the high one." The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, hosting a variety of species such as grizzly bears, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, and migratory birds. A notable feature is the Denali Wilderness, which covers a significant portion of the park and is designated to preserve the natural environment in its pristine state. The park offers limited road access to reduce human impact, promoting a sense of remoteness and wilderness. Visitors can explore the landscape through bus tours, hiking trails, and ranger-led programs. The park stands as a testament to the unspoiled beauty of Alaska's wilderness and the importance of conservation efforts in preserving such remarkable landscapes for future generations. The park is crossed by a single road. Along this road, travelers see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest transition to high alpine tundra and snow-capped mountains. On a drive along the park road, visitors may see a moose grazing in a stand of willows, caribou resting on a snowfield, Dall sheep high on the slopes, a wolf trotting across the tundra, or a grizzly bear feeding on blueberries. A goal of many visitors to the park is to see the "Big Five." Solitude, tranquility and wilderness await you. We offer a wide variety of Denali vacation packages, ranging from driving tours , motorcoach tours and railroad adventures .

Hiking at Denali National Park

There are not very many marked trails in Denali, and most of the trails here are short (less than 2 miles) and near the park entrance. One of the reasons Denali exists is to provide people with a place to explore a trail-less wilderness, and a result of this is a limited trail network. Some of these trails are utilitarian—they travel alongside the Denali Park Road and connect the visitor center with other important facilities in the entrance area of the park. Other trails offer a departure from the immediate surroundings of the park's only road, allowing you to seek a bit of solace and quiet, while still having an obvious, established path to follow. Hiking off-trail can seem intimidating at first, but is a memorable and unique experience. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Your Guide to Adventure

In an effort to preserve the fragile ecosystem of Denali National Park & Preserve, the National Park Service has limited access on the park road for private vehicles. To experience the best of the Park, we suggest taking one of our fascinating and awe-inspiring interpretive land tours. The land tours give you the opportunity for full-time wildlife spotting – and also allow you the chance to sit back, relax and listen to your Interpretive Guide share stories about the history, culture and geography that surrounds you.

Our Tours are led by seasoned and expert guides who will provide in-depth narrative of the flora and fauna of Denali National Park. Please see our chart below to help select the right tour for you. Remember-the more time you spend in the park, the greater your chance of seeing the "big five" wildlife (Dall Sheep, grizzly bear, caribou, moose and wolf).

Tour buses are comfortable, offering bucket seating and tours are ADA access available. We recommend pre-booking your boxed lunch. Park entrance fees are included in tour prices.

Journeys In Alaska For All-Day Adventure

Since its opening in 1957, the Denali highway has unlocked the door to explorers in Denali National Park's rugged wilderness. While the Denali highway is still in use today, its packed gravel surface can be tough to navigate. Instead, most visitors choose to take the two-lane paved Parks Highway, with its 362 miles of spectacular scenery. Experience the rated #2 Drive of Lifetime by National Geographic Traveler, on your own self-guided Denali Jeep excursion along the Denali Highway!

In 1917, the park was a designated wildlife refuge called Mount McKinley National Park, established by presidential and congressional order. When the park boundaries were expanded in 1980 and tripled the size, the name was changed to Denali National Park. The first Denali National Park tours began as early as 1923, leading excited travelers on excursions during the summer months.

What People Are Saying About Us...

This was a most incredible experience. It was a very spur of the moment decision. The weather was perfect, clear skies and the mountain was there in all its glory. From booking the flight to being taken to the air strip and the flight it's self was really efficient and very well managed, we couldn't fault it. To get up close and personal to Denali was a breath taking experience and a memory we'll treasure forever. Thank you Denali Adventure Tours and thank you Bob for the best flight we've ever had!

Having just returned from a six week trip, I would rate this flight as a major highlight in our Alaskan adventure. We had good weather and visibility so the views from the air were fantastic. We circumnavigated Mt Denali and only had a bit of cloud on the south side. Seeing Denali National Park from the air, with its wide glacial valleys and polychrome landscape was thrilling. The whole service from pick up to return was excellent and the pilot went the extra mile by taking photos of us with the plane when we landed.

From the center of the lower 48th's (Iowa) to the top of Denali, we come a far way to experience the sensational Mt. Denali. The most visual adrenalin rush that excessed all our expectation. A truly spectacular experience. Thanks, Denali Air, Jamin Rice, our booking agent in the Canyon and Jim our pilot.

The winds were extremely gusty on take off and landing but the pilot demonstrated excellent mastery of the aircraft (Piper Navajo twin engine). There were a few "bumps" in the air around Denali but that was handled easily as well. The flight lasts about an hour with a circle all around the summit at an elevation of 13,000. The views from this vantage are not to be missed. As a pilot, I would highly recommend this air tour of Denali.

Don’t worry about being one of the 70% that never see Denali. Get up close and personal. You will not believe how close you are with this circular view of this beauty. But that is only part of your flight - you will never get a more magnificent view the very best glaziers in Alaska emanating from the feet of Denali.

15 Best Denali National Park Tours

Denali is the highest peak in North America, standing over 6000 meters above sea level in the state of Alaska. The peak is perpetually covered in snow and rises dramatically from the surrounding tundra to form one of the most impressive natural sights in the US.

This is one of the most isolated locations in the world, but the vast wilderness of Denali National Park that the peak lies in is an astoundingly beautiful place to visit. From Anchorage, you must travel overland or by small plane to the town of Talkeetna, from where you can begin to access the spectacular scenery of Denali.

Luckily, there are some excellent tours that facilitate travel into this extreme and remote world, from daring plane expeditions around the face of the mountain to off-road ATV adventures through the national park. To help plan your trip to Alaska, here are our favorite Denali National Park tours.

1. Denali North Face Flight Expedition

Denali North Face Flight Expedition

Denali is an almost insurmountable mountain and climbing the enormous peak is a challenge that few have completed. It’s not a feat taken lightly and it’s one that needs careful training, planning, and deep pockets! Few people, therefore, ever get too close to the mountain itself, but one alternative method of experiencing Denali is to take a flight expedition.

This tour takes you into the skies on a small prop plane flown by local bush pilots who know the landscapes and the weather conditions well. Traveling across the wilderness, you’ll see the most impressive natural sights of the national park from the air, as you fly over an area that would take days to cover otherwise. Get as close as the pilots dare to the north face of the mountain peak; along the way, you will see distinctive ridges, famous glaciers and much, much more.

2. Flight to/from Denali National Park

Flight To From Denali National Park

Being part of a vast and remote wilderness, Denali National Park is by no means the most accessible destination in the United States. Overland travel to the park can be arduous, unpredictable and long, but you can save time and energy by simply booking a flight into the national park itself, to one of the accommodation options.

These flights are in small aircraft, giving you a window seat view over the great landscapes below as you fly from any of Alaska’s major nearby locales – Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Talkeetna – and into Denali National Park. Along the way, see the best of the wilderness from above and get a wonderful running commentary from the bush pilot.

Bear Welcomes Denali Visitors by Using Sign as a Scratch Post

blog-post

By Bethanie Hestermann

“Welcome to Denali National Park and Preserve, everyone. Here’s a grizzly bear scratching itself on our sign.”

We imagine a tour guide taking visitors past the Teklanika Campground would be tempted to say something like this as a brown bear used a wooden Denali park sign as its personal scratching post . A representative of the National Park Service (NPS) captured a video of the bear doing its business with the sign, and Denali National Park and Preserve shared the footage on its Facebook page.

In the video, the bear scratches the top of its back against the bottom of the large wooden sign, then rubs its backside against one of the sign’s posts. It seems like the bear really satisfies its itch, and it gives anyone watching quite a show in the meantime.

Denali also used the funny video as an opportunity to educate visitors about wildlife safety.

“Every wildlife enthusiast enjoys watching a bear scratching its back, almost as much as the bear enjoys satisfying its itch,” the caption reads. “While amusing, this video serves as a reminder that the Park is home to many bears and other animals that may be encountered on or near roads and in other frontcountry areas.”

Denali encourages visitors to enjoy wildlife from a safe distance. For bears, this means staying 300 yards or more away when outside of a vehicle (and at least 25 yards away if you’re inside of a vehicle).

Watch a bear scratching itself on a Denali sign here:

Barnaul: What to see in the gateway to Altai

denali tour

Museums with curiosities

The Altai State Museum of Local History (ul. Polzunova 46) houses valuable collections on the archaeology and ethnography of the indigenous peoples of the Altai (the Altaitsy, the Teleuty and the Telengity), as well as a large model of Demidov’s silver-refining complex.

denali tour

The Museum of Time (ul. Matrosova 12) has grown out of the private collection of local resident Sergei Korepanov. The museum is full of amazing things from various epochs, all united by one main criterion: “the item exhibited must raise the interest of visitors from all age groups.” Here you’ll find also a 19th-century stereoscope (a device to view stereo-photographs) from Germany; a field samovar; a 1979 “Pingvin” siphon, which was used in to make lemonade in the USSR; and a Hungarian wooden mule.

A place under the pines

denali tour

The Barnaul pine forest belt is part of the Yegorevsky Reserve and the foliage of its pines, oaks, willows, poplars and trembling poplars protects the Altai from the dust storms that reach Siberia from Kazakhstan and Central Asia. Most importantly, it is an environmentally clean area where visitors can take a hike or spend a few days.

The Barnaul pinewood forest belt is 550-kilometers long and extends from the Ob River in Barnaul to the Irtysh River in Semipalatinsk in northeast Kazakhstan (3,347 kilometers from Moscow). There are numerous recreation facilities, health spas and summer camps for children, therefore it should be no surprise that locals and visitors love spending time in these quiet forests year round. In winter skiing and ice fishing are particularly popular.

How to get there

There are daily flights (a direct flight takes 4.5 hours) and trains (2.5 days) from Moscow to Barnaul. The railway station is located in the city center, while the airport is 17 kilometers west of the city. From the city the airport can be reached by taxi or by minibus no. 115. Many travelers also come to Barnaul from Novosibirsk, either by train (the journey takes 4-6 hours) or by bus (there are several direct buses every day).

Denali is a unique park in many ways.

There is just one road in the park, and traffic on most of it is regulated to prevent congestion, preserve a wilderness experience for sight-seers and reduce stress on wildlife. Travel on the road is mainly limited to a variety of bus trips.

  • Tour buses are narrated.
  • Tundra Wilderness and Kantishna Experience Tours include a box lunch and hot beverage.
  • Restroom breaks occur about every 90 minutes
  • Wildlife viewing stops will occur any time animals can be seen.

Comparison of Tour Bus Choices

Natural history tour.

  • Duration : ~5 hours
  • Destination : Mile 27, Teklanika River
  • Description : Focusing on the rich natural and cultural history of the park, this tour travels to Teklanika River (Mile 27)

Tundra Wilderness Tour

  • Duration : 7 to 8 hours
  • Destination : Mile 53, Toklat River
  • Description : Variations of this tour have been in existence since 1923, with the first concessioner offering bus trips as far as the road extended at that time. Today, it is a 7-8 hour excursion into the park with a certified driver-naturalist. Going to at least Toklat River (mile 53), this tour provides in-depth information about the history of the park, while maintaining a keen eye in search of wildlife and photography opportunities. It may travel a bit farther than Toklat RIver if conditions allow a good view of Denali from Stony Dome, a few miles farther west from Toklat.

Kantishna Experience Tour

  • Duration : 12 hours
  • Destination : Mile 92, Kantishna
  • Description : Follow the trail of pioneer Fannie Quigley to the old gold town of Kantishna on this all-day adventure to the end of the Park Road. Your driver is a Certified Interpretive Guide and a National Park Service interpretive ranger joins you roughly halfway through your journey on this immersive experience. You will spend time in Kantishna learning about its interesting history and role in Interior Alaska

When you buy a tour bus ticket, you'll choose how long of a trip to undertake. Choices are 5, 8, or 12 hours round-trip. Durations include stops for wildlife viewing, bathroom breaks, and more.

On a narrated tour bus, your driver is a trained naturalist who will share stories about the natural and cultural history of Denali. Restroom breaks occur about every 90 minutes. The bus will pause any time wildlife sightings occur.

There are no minimum ages; but state of Alaska child safety laws mean that kids under age 4 must be in a car seat. Car seats are not provided by the bus company, so please bring your own.

Pets are not allowed on buses.

Ticket prices vary depending on the duration of the trip. Please visit the tour bus company's website to find current prices.

Tour buses start from many different locations. Please check your ticket or inquire with the tour bus company for your starting location.

If your visit will be short (e.g., 3 days or less), reservations are strongly recommended.  Please visit  the tour bus company's website  to book in advance.

Visitors who will be in the Denali area for more than a few days may find it more convenient to wait until arriving and purchase tickets in the park, at the Denali Bus Depot.

The summer season in Denali is from May 20 to mid-September. There are short tours occasionally available a few weeks before and after summer; contact the tour bus company for details.

Bus trips operate all day, though most departures are before noon.

  • Several buses each day are equipped with wheelchair lifts. Please be sure to notify the bus company of this need when making reservations.
  • Rest areas where buses stop offer wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.
  • Most of the park road and rest areas are well-compacted gravel surfaces. Only the first 15 miles of the park road are paved.
