This 2020 red Trek 520 Touring Bike, in excellent condition, is the perfect ride for adults who love to cycle. With a 60 cm frame, this bike has a drop bar handlebars and 700C wheels. The bike is equipped with puncture-resistant, reflective sidewall Bontrager tires and 24 gears with integrated brake shifters. This Trek 520 model, Trek's longest running model (since the early 1980s), has mechanical disc brakes and a new Brooks Cambium 17 saddle and also includes features such as two bottle cages, reflectors, bell, rear and front bike racks (Ortlieb panniers, fenders, etc. are negotiable). I’ve been slowly moving away from drop-bar bikes over the last year, at least when it comes to my personal bikes. I recognize their importance and benefit, but I’m beginning to think that I’d rather have a nice big tire and a flat bar for the majority of terrain I encounter. So I set out to take a perfectly reasonable drop-bar touring bike—steel, of course—and convert it over to something better suited to my current tastes. Enter the Trek 520.

First offered in 1983, the 520 is Trek Bicycles’ longest running model, and for good reason. Just take this description of the 520 from the April 1985 edition of Bicycling Magazine , “Many people who buy loaded touring bikes built to slog half their worldly possessions over the Continental Divide never haul more than a couple of bananas, a rain cape, and a patch kit. Trek hopes its new $499 ‘credit card touring bike,’ the 520, will appeal to these folks who want a hill-leveling triple crankset but don’t need the extra weight and slow handling of a typical touring frame.” Whoever wrote this deserves a high-five.

Its chromoly steel frame, various mounts, and vintage graphics had me scheming. I envisioned a flat bar 520, 29″ tires, and a wide range 1×11 drivetrain: a steel rambler perfect for commuting to work, exploring gravel pathways, and some loaded bikepacking. With the help from some friends’ parts bins, a few kind shop owners, and Dorset, UK-based Sven Cycles; who found a Nitto handlebar in his shop that wasn’t in use, I made it happen. It’s not a particularly expensive or over the top build, but has the look of something boutique that you might spot at your local coffee outside ride. More importantly, it’s really fun to ride.

Trek 520 Build Kit

In hindsight, I could have saved some time spent trading parts around by simply purchasing a frameset, instead of a complete 520 build. As you can see below, not many of the stock components are being used. The main goal was to convert the 520 to a flat bar build, so I needed a long stem and a setback seatpost for a comfortable distance between my saddle and bars. The nominal ‘stem’ length on the Nitto B906 bull moose bars is 125mm, with a 7 degree rise and 685mm width. That’s a little narrow for my liking, but still very comfortable. I went with a durable and affordable 11-speed XT drivetrain, paired with some parts bin components from friends, including the crankset, shifter, and derailleur. I removed the rear rack and swapped the larger touring-style front rack for my Tumbleweed T-Rack, but I’m holding onto the stock front rack as it’s not that heavy and might be useful.

For bags, my Porcelain Rocket Microwave Panniers have come along on nearly every ride. I haven’t had a front pannier setup in a while, but I love having a clear visual of the panniers, rather than running them on a rear rack. This way I can quickly decide whether or not I can squeeze through an obstacle, be it a tight median in town or a narrow section of trail. I’ve also been experimenting with Porcelain Rocket’s 52Hz Road frame bag, and have some slick new bags from UK-based Wizard Works in for review that compliment the 520’s aesthetics quite well. More on that soon.

So far, I’ve mostly been commuting to work on the 520, which is a 60km round trip on paved bike paths, gravel trails, and road. It performs exactly how I envisioned. The flat bar conversion puts me in an upright position, the high volume 29″ tires keep me rolling quickly, and the steel frame is comfortable yet still handles loads fine.

Outside of commuting, I’ve tackled tame singletrack and successfully navigated my way through shorter sections of the chunky horse trails that are littered throughout Maple Ridge. I don’t want to throw the stock Trek 520 build under the bus, but I’m willing to bet I wouldn’t be riding this type of terrain on drop-bars. With that said, my take on the 520 is very far from the stock version, which is a traditional touring bike. Imagine if Trek stocked a flat bar, big tired 520.. now that’d be something.

From Touring to Cruising

Although I’ve been quite happy with the conversion as a whole, I’ve noticed a few quirks that might answer some questions for those interested in pursuing a similar project. Traditional touring bikes are typically designed with seated pedalling in mind, which translates to slack seat tube angles. Personally, I enjoy the upright position; I have a good visual of what’s going on around me, and I’ve noticed I have less pressure in my hands, but there’s been a clear tradeoff. When paired with my setback seatpost and flat bars, I feel a pretty significant lack of power. I’m sure I could comfortably spin all day long, but I’m not getting anywhere that quickly.

There’s likely a lot more at play here, but it’s a good first step in learning more about flat bar conversions and whether or not they make sense. And it’s something I hope to pursue in great depth and eventually report back on. Maybe deep down I really just want a 1986 Specialized Rockhopper, which isn’t really too far off from my 2020 Trek 520.

I’ve actually been so impressed with the Trek 520 that it will be assisting in a few upcoming gear reviews, including some bags and wheels. It’s not perfect, though. I would have preferred thru-axles, the rear brake caliper lacks adjustment due to its position, and the fork is aluminum, not steel. The complete build comes with segmented housing, so lacks the necessary cable guides for a clean setup.

I’m impressed that the 520 can fit 29 x 2.1″ WTB Nano tires, which work great for a wide mix of riding. I was also able to size up to a 60cm frame, since the flat bar conversion required some extra length, which gives me a massive main triangle to work with. The large Porcelain Rocket 52hz Road frame bag fits like a glove. Of course the 520 is outfitted with all the necessary mounts, including rack, fender, and bottles bosses. And the complete 520 ships with some pretty decent racks, both front and rear.

My first ride on the 520 didn’t go as planned. I imagined myself racing along my usual route to work, the Golden Ears mountains to the north, cranberry bogs rushing by as I navigate my way through the seemingly endless network of gravel dyke paths that link Maple Ridge and Port Coquitlam together. Instead, I got a flat, my first non-tubeless flat in several years, and had to fix that on the side of a busy highway. It is now set up tubeless.

Although I opted to build up the latest Trek 520 frame, a similar setup could easily be created by finding a 90s mountain bike in good condition and swapping a few bits around. Purchasing a new bike just made it that much easier to include modern components with little to no fuss. I’ve been enjoying my commute more now that I’m not hauling 27.5+ tires around, and I expect lots more casual urban exploration rides in the near future.

“Trek 520 Grando – the ‘do it all’ bike. Go anywhere, everywhere, on any surface, and in any condition.

Steel frame, aluminum fork with Shimano Tiagra front derailleur and shifters & Shimano GRX rear derailleur.

I’m almost at 3000 miles as of August 7th. I bought the bike on December 29th, 2021.

I’ve added the Bontrager Adventure Boss frame bag, switched out the pedals to Shimano SPD, the handlebars to GR Elite with 13° flare, and the red tape. Also switched out the saddle to the Verse Comp.

The most important and noticeable change was the wheels, which I upgraded to Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3V with a 108 rapid drive hub.

The tires are Origin 8 Wildfire CX 700x38C tires for gravel/sand and Bontrager H2 for the road.

I ride the bike through sandy trails, over gravel, mud, and grass, and on the road. The gearing goes from crawling to maxing out at 34mph (55 km/h) on flat terrain.

The changes I’ve made are all personal things I wanted to upgrade or change for my comfort and performance. The bike stock was perfect, except for the pedals and saddle. It came with toe cages that are not good, and the saddle was not very comfortable (personal preference).

Otherwise, I love the bike so much! I’m averaging about 120-160 miles a week on it. Unfortunately, I am limited because of the 40°C temperatures we have this time of year.

I can definitely recommend this bike to someone looking for a versatile and comfortable bike! “

Main Features of Trek 520

Trek 520 has been in Trek’s lineup since 1983. Below, I focus on the 2023 model.

Durable Steel Frame

Trek 520 is based on a timeless steel frame with a relaxed geometry.

This is good news for bike packers because they can sit in a more upright riding position that is less demanding on their flexibility and core strength.

Steel is also a bike material that is relatively easily fixable on the go (unlike carbon).

Its other benefits include high durability, affordability, and the iconic look of the rounded tubes.

29-Inch Wheels

The 29-inch wheels are a standard size on road bikes. Those on the 520 are tubeless-ready, so you can use tubeless tires.

They are made of aluminum and use stainless steel spokes, providing great durability while keeping reasonable weight.

NOTE : The wheelset in the following picture is not stock. The owner replaced it with the Bontrager Aelous 3V carbon wheels.

The 520 offers tire clearance for up to 2″ wide tires (without fenders). So, depending on the terrain you want to ride, you can replace the stock 38mm tires.

Trek 520 is equipped with Shimano Sora/Alivio (shifters, derailleurs, cranks, cassette), Bontrager, and other 3rd party components.

The Grando has a combination of Shimano Tiagra and GRX and easier gears. It also has wider tires but doesn’t include the rear rack.

I am sure you will appreciate the mechanical disc brakes that are more effective in tougher conditions (like in the rain).

Some owners report the stock saddle is uncomfortable, but everybody has different preferences. You can always replace it later.

One of Trek 520’s main highlights is its aluminum racks, which can hold up to 55 lbs (25 kg).

Remember, the Grando only comes with the front rack. The rear rack is not included.

NOTE : The rack is not shown in the pictures because the owner took it down and uses frame bags instead.

These racks will allow you to expand your bike’s storage capacity, so you will pack everything you need for your trip.

The current generation of Trek 520 has a 3×7spd drivetrain with 21 gears, while the Trek 520 Grando has a 2×10spd drivetrain.

This range is wide enough for various terrains. Just make sure you avoid cross-chaining.

The disadvantage of the 3X drivetrains is their complexity, more complicated maintenance, and higher weight.

More expensive mountain bikes come with 2X or 1X drivetrains that are much simpler than 3X.

You don’t have to think about the cross-chaining as much. That’s why they are more popular.

I loved this bike, but after about 1,500 miles the crank bearing were worn and the ultimate disappointment, the frame cracked. It was my ideal touring bike up tao that point. Trek cannot even replace the frame, but offered an aluminum gravel bike frame which does not meet my needs. I’ll keep looking for a frame.

Hi Kurt, I am sorry to hear that. I am also surprised that Trek didn’t offer the same frame as a compensation. What frame did they offer? And why it doesn’t meet your needs? – Petr

Luckily got Trek 520 from Dbyke store, Pune, India. Weight factor is a concern as it weighs pretty 14 Kgs. Should weight could be compromised by Al alloy speed could also have picked up as its not designed for speed. Should have come with fenders and a dynamo. I didn’t find the stock pedals effective and got it replaced. Overall tough bike and didn’t face any issue from 9 months. No bike is complete but have to accept the reality.

I have owned 520 since 2020. In that time I have driven 8000 km (end 2023). I happened to weigh over 135 kg. The Shimano hardware and paint is poor, a gentle bump is a chip. I have HeadSet bearings to replace. The 520 has not let me down in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Poland … Is it worth buying? I can’t think of anything better in Europe at this price. The Koga is two, three times more expensive.

I LOVE this bike! I have a collection of vintage touring bicycles and on my recent move to NYC I had to choose just one for the first few months. My wife and I are subletting until we find a more permanent rental. So I took my 1984 520 as my one all rounder. It commutes, gets groceries, and it takes me on weekend fun rides. Mine has the stock running gear but it does have new wheels, peddles, stem, bars, and saddle. I’ve put SKS fenders on it, MKS-11 pedals, a Brooks pro for summer use, a Unicantor saddle for winter, aero brake levers, and ergo bend bars and a low rider front rack. For tires I have Vitoria Rubino Control in 700x28. Switching from 27” to 700c wheels was no problem with the stock canti brakes. The frame is solid but still absorbs chatter. It’s a double butted Reynolds 501 Cro-mo triangle with Tange Manga-moly fork and stays. The stays are 45.5cm long! Awesome heel clearance and she rides like a caddy!

For weaknesses I’d say brazes and eyelets. One eyelet per drop out means both your fenders and your racks share the same bolt and drop out. It can be fiddly to set up. Only one set of water bottle basements, on the down tube, so you’ll need to sort that out. Tire clearance is a little tight, 28mm with fenders, 32mm without. I’d love to be able to squeeze 32’s in WITH fenders, but it is what it is. It’s not a 620 or 720? I have both an ‘84 620 and an ‘83 720. Both of those frames have the attachment points the 520 doesn’t. Since I can compare the ride quality of these three icons (in the 24” frame size) I would note that the 720, with the 47cm stays is particularly finicky with weight placement. If you overload the rear end, you end up with a tail wagging the dog situation. It’s a luxe touring bike in early ‘80s fashion but I think the 620 has it beat. It’s a little stouter and so it feels more modern. Of the 3 I would take the ‘84 620 across the country. The 520 is the best commuter you could want. And the 720 would be my choice for Randonneuring, ultralight touring, or credit card touring.

I’ve had my Trek 520 for close on 20 years. It’s an old friend with whom I have had many adventures. Like the Times ad - takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. It’s like an apocalypse bake for me. All else is dead but my Trek will keep rolling.

Excellent range of gears especially for women with the lower top chain ring of 48. Responsive frame. Good wheel hubs, I get a great freewheel. Love the control offered by the disc brakes. Good saddle. Not too long.

Weight doesn't bother me though it does some. Bar end changers took a little getting used to but I appreciate how much more comfortable they are for small hands. Thrilled with this bike, best I've owned for years.

All around great bike for touring and has been one of the most reliable touring bike models for years.

if you plan to ride considerable distances then do yourself a favor and replace the tires. I rode across the US with a few friends who keep the stock tires and out of the four tires that started the trip only one made it. We had a day where one tire got 7 flats! Get a good touring tire like a marathon or a gatorskin.

bulletproof bike, rode 12 years approx 30,000 kms rebuilt cassette few times as i never wash my bike and change the chain every 5 to 6 thousand kms. The power train gave me no trouble. I accept the cassette ware damage due to sand etc in the chain so I cannot blame the bike. This is my pickup truck. I find it unbelievable that other reviewers with very low milage had problems. The 520 is probably the most common touring bike in our club with 600 members and very few complaints. Cross Canada tour cycling club. A touring bike is built to be trouble free and basic.

I have racing bike that is 15 lbs but once one accepts what a touring bike(about 28 lbs) is (pickup truck vs a sports car) there are no complaints. I often use it for my winter bike on Vancouver island. The bar end shifters are trouble free. The bearing in the steering column probably need replacing but all other moving parts are working fine. I ride it in the rain and on good crushed stone trails. I upgraded the wheels, handlebars and seat posts, not that i needed to - just wanted to lower the weight a few lbs.

My typical tours are 10 to 28 days with 15 to 20 lbs of luggage. I use marathon plus tires that are heavy but mostly flat free. Have never adjusted the spokes but obviously have adjusted the cables and changed the rubber in the brakes. I wore thru the front wheel due to small stone chips embeded in the brake rubber.The bike can get water in the frame but very little if any damage. I had a hard time taking the seat post off to pack the bike for air travel. The 105 components and gearing are great for touring. With 27 gears I can climb a wall as one just can spin in lowest gear with no issues about my knees. I'm 69 years old and just back from 28 day tour of Europe. THe last few years I use my high end race bikes for daily rides because they are supper light. However as a touring bike there are none better. I would recommend this bike for a touring bike and buy a lighter bike for fast pack riding.

As an entry level Clydesdale (205 lbs) I rode my 520 around Lake Huron last summer. 1025 miles in 14 days. 50 pounds of panniers and I did not have a problem. Still have all my spokes. I rode on Schwalbe Marathon tubes and tires and cannot say enough about them. I have put air in them twice since July 2013. Also added a Brooks B17 saddle, SPD pedals and raised the stem 2 inches. This is my daily commuting bike in the pothole capital, Pittsburgh and I love it. It actually rolls better than my Trek 1000 road bike. Top speed on the 520 is 47 mph!

It's problem free.

I just completed a cross country tour with my 520 and had zero problems. It worked flawlessly.

It has a smooth ride and the top tube slants so that the stand over height works better for me. The bike is a stable secure ride. I had no problems with the drive train.

The tires were marginal. The 700cm wheels did not stay true when under load and touring in Europe. The spokes started to break after a few years of light use with a few trips in between. I am only 160 pounds and so with gear the load on this bike was only 210 to 215 pounds. When your bike fails on tour it feels like a betrayal. No room for a wider tire.

I would not re-buy this bike. I do not think the wheels are strong enough. The rack was adequate but just barely. I am going with 26 inch wheels and at least 36 spokes on my next bike. Also it could be just a problem in Florida but, rust is an issue with this bike. I think this is a good bike for nice roads with light loads and short hauls.

simple and easy to ride

The tires (Bontrager) that came on the bike were junk. They would go flat if you looked at them cross-eyed -- including one fun ride when I had 4 flats in 10 miles. (No glass was involved, just road side pebbles and one thorn) A VERY poor tire for a touring bike. The crank bearings failed in less than six months of light riding. The shop where I bought the bike replaced them for free (Bike Gallery, Portland OR) -- possibly because I had a fit, but they said the bearings weren't covered by the Trek warranty because the failure was considered "normal" wear and tear. In what junk-shop world is bearing failure in perhaps 300 miles (I did very little riding at the time) considered "normal"?

The bike shop told me I could expect to replace the crank bearings every year (or more often if I ride very much) This is not a bike I would recommend for anyone.

orginal 2006 rim cracked after 6K, seat post was miss shaped and kept slipping down, had road gearing, btw, road crank & 135 mm spacing, no spacer drive side, 5mm spacer left when converting to outboard bearing, to keep the chain line correct. front brake squeal, switch to shimano BR-M330 pads stopped front squeal. drilled hole in bottom bracket to drain

Hi second review of my Trek 520, 2006 19" frame. I've got about 16,000 miles on the bike. OK, here is what i've done. Brooks b17 saddle, schmidt dyno front hub and lumitec light system (peter white), rebuilt back wheel and front with velocity synergy rims, morningstar seal, krytox grease, in the rear LX hub (silent now, may never need further service), salsa moto ace 120mm 25^ stem, planet bike fenders, conti gatorskin 77 x 32's, michelin A2 tubes, cane creek V brake levers, planet bike fenders, kalloy seat post,salsa seat clamp, phil wood outboard bearings, deore 48/36/26 170mm crankset, deore lx front derailiur, several chains cn-7701 & sram, rivendale front bag, trek rear bag with drop down panniers

Kemerovo Oblast - Overview

Kemerovo Oblast is a federal subject of Russia located in the south-east of Western Siberia, part of the Siberian Federal District. This region is also known as Kuzbass . In 2019, “Kuzbass” officially became the second name of Kemerovo Oblast. Kemerovo is the capital city of the region.

The population of Kemerovo Oblast is about 2,604,300 (2022), the area - 95,725 sq. km.

History of Kemerovo Oblast

People began to settle in what is now the Kemerovo region several thousand years ago. The indigenous peoples of the region were Shortsy and Teleuts. In 1618, Russians founded Kuznetsky stockaded town in the south of the present region to protect Russian lands from the raids of the Mongols and Jungars. In 1698, Mariinsk was founded.

In 1721, Mikhailo Volkov found “burning mountain” (a burning coal seam) on the banks of the Tom River and thus became the person who discovered the Kuzbass coal deposits. Industrial development of this land started at the end of the 18th century.

During the 19th century, the territory of the Kemerovo region was part of the Tomsk province. During this period, the first industrial enterprises appeared here: Tomsk ironworks, Gavrilovsky and Gurievsky silver plants, Suharinsky and Salairsky mines. Construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the main reasons for the rapid development of the local industry.

More historical facts…

In Soviet times, the region became part of the West Siberian krai, and then - Novosibirsk oblast. The development of the coal, metallurgical and chemical industries continued: Kemerovo Coke Plant, Kuznetsk Metallurgical Plant, a lot of new mines. The workers’ settlements built near the industrial enterprises quickly obtained the status of towns: Kiselyovsk, Osinniki, Krasnobrodsky, Tashtagol, Kaltan, Mezhdurechensk and others.

During the Second World War, this region was a major supplier of coal and metal. More than 50 thousand tanks and 45 thousand aircraft were produced using steel from Novokuznetsk. 71 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Kuzbass from the occupied regions, most of them remained in the region after the war.

In 1943, Kemerovo Oblast became a separate region that included 17.5% of the territory and 42% of the total population of Novosibirsk Oblast. After the war, the region continued to grow rapidly. On September 18, 1984, about 100 km from Kemerovo, a peaceful underground nuclear explosion was carried out, the power of the explosive device was 10 kilotons.

In the 1990s, the region’s economy declined. However, by the end of the 20th century, there were some positive developments - the development of the coal industry in the first place. Special attention was paid to the development of open-pit coal mining, as a more effective and safe way.

Kemerovo Oblast is one of the few Russian regions that has a recognized and well-known alternative name “Kuzbass” - the abbreviation of “Kuznetsk coal basin” occupying a large part of the territory of the region.

It is the most densely populated part of Siberia. The length of the region from north to south is about 500 km, from west to east - 300 km. Russians make up more than 90% of the population. There are small nations of Shortsy, Teleuts, Siberian Tatars who have preserved their cultural traditions.

The climate is sharply continental with long cold winters and warm short summers. The average temperature in January is minus 17-20 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 17-18 degrees Celsius.

Today, about 86% of the population of Kemerovo Oblast lives in cities and towns making it one of the most urbanized regions of Russia. The largest cities are Kemerovo (548,000), Novokuznetsk (540,000), Prokopievsk (185,000), Mezhdurechensk (95,400), Leninsk-Kuznetsky (91,600), Kisilyovsk (83,700), Yurga (79,700), Belovo (70,100), Anzhero-Sudzhensk (65,700).

Sheregesh, a village located at the foot of Zelenaya Mountain in Tashtagol district, is one of Russia’s most popular ski resorts. The ski season lasts from November to May. Kuznetsky Alatau Reserve and Shorsky National Park are the main natural attractions.

Kemerovo Oblast plays a significant role in Russian industry. The following mineral resources are mined here: coal, gold, silver, iron ore, manganese ore, aluminum, nepheline ore, lead, zinc, barite, quartz, limestone, clay, dolomite, sand.

Kuznetsk coal basin is one of the largest coal basins in the world. The most important centers of the local coal industry are Prokopyevsk, Mezhdurechensk, Belovo, Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Osinniki, Leninsk-Kuznetsky. Coal mines can be found almost everywhere in the Kemerovo region. About 180 million tons of coal is mined annually.

Rail transport is well developed in the region. The Trans-Siberian Railway, the South Kuzbas branch of West Siberian Railway cross its territory. There are large airports in Kemerovo (Kemerovo International Airport) and Novokuznetsk (Spichenkovo Airport).

It was previously known as Kuznetsk until 1931, and as Stalinsk until 1961.

Founded in 1618 by men from Tomsk as a Cossack ostrog (fort) on the Tom River , it was initially called Kuznetsky ostrog ( Кузне́цкий острог ). [2] It became the seat of Kuznetsky Uyezd in 1622. [3] Kuznetsk ( Кузне́цк ) was granted town status in 1689. [3] It was here that Fyodor Dostoevsky married his first wife, Maria Isayeva in 1857. [13] Joseph Stalin 's rapid industrialization of the Soviet Union transformed the sleepy town into a major coal mining and industrial center in the 1930s. It merged with Sad Gorod in 1931. From 1931 to 1932, the city was known as Novokuznetsk and between 1932 and 1961 as Stalinsk ( Ста́линск ), after Stalin. As a result of de-Stalinization , it was renamed back to Novokuznetsk .

As of the 2021 Census , the ethnic composition of Novokuznetsk was: [14]

Within the framework of administrative divisions , Novokuznetsk serves as the administrative center of Novokuznetsky District , even though it is not a part of it. [1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction —an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts . [15] As a municipal division , Novokuznetsk City Under Oblast Jurisdiction is incorporated as the Novokuznetsky Urban Okrug . [15] [16]

The city consists of six non-municipal intra-city districts : [16]

On 7 December 2009, by a resolution of the Novokuznetsk City Council of People's Deputies, a new version of the City Charter was approved, [16] according to which the authorities consist of:

The Novokuznetsk City Council of People's Deputies is a representative body of power and consists of 18 deputies elected in 18 single-mandate constituencies and 18 deputies elected on party lists. The term of office of deputies is five years.

In September 2021, elections were held for the Council of People's Deputies, following which the seats in the council were distributed as follows: 27 - United Russia , 2 - Liberal Democratic Party , 2 - A Just Russia , 2 - Communist Party . The representative of United Russia, Alexandra Shelkovnikova, was elected chairman.

The Youth Parliament of the city operates under the City Council of People's Deputies. [19]

RC Novokuznetsk compete in the Professional Rugby League , the highest division of rugby union in Russia.

Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky , Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Dmitry Orlov and Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov were all born in Novokuznetsk and began their pro careers with Metallurg Novokuznetsk.

Novokuznetsk is also the birthplace of US chess Grandmaster Gata Kamsky .

The main airport is the Spichenkovo Airport . The city is also a major railway junction with both local and long-distance trains. Local public transport is provided by trams , buses, and trolleybuses.

Novokuznetsk has a fairly typical southwest Siberian humid continental climate ( Köppen climate classification : Dfb ) with warm summers during which most of the precipitation occurs, and severe, generally dry winters. Snowfall is very frequent during the winter, but its water content is generally very low due to the cold temperatures.
