A trip to this cultural haven will take you from the depths of the 14th-century underground passages to the heights of award-winning shopping centres and eateries across The High Street, Princesshay and The Guildhall.

Exeter’s Fore Street also offers a variety of independent shops for those looking for something different.

The city’s free Royal Albert Memorial Museum boasts a range of stunning exhibitions, while the historic quayside hosts watersports, antiques and a variety of cafes and restaurants for a leisurely lunch.

The new leisure centre St Sidwell's Point is situated right next to Exeter’s new bus station, so the grandkids can enjoy the new state-of-the-art pool and soft play areas.

Alternatively, you can treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience with various treatments on offer, including a sauna, drench and monsoon showers, a salt vapour room, and a fabulous roof-top terrace that's perfect for unwinding after a busy day at the shops.

Further south in Plymouth you can visit Drake Circus, one of the Westcountry's most popular shopping centres, with more than 70 stores, including big-name brands and eateries.

Or head to the Barbican and Sutton Harbour, where you'll find a vibrant mix of cobbled streets, narrow lanes and more than 200 Listed buildings, many of which are Tudor and Jacobean, as well as boutique shops, galleries, pubs and eateries.

If you fancy a short break in the city, you can take in a show at the Theatre Royal Plymouth or treat the grandkids to fun at the Plymouth Life Centre or a trip to the National Marine Aquarium.

Portsmouth bus travel: Free journeys on First and Stagecoach services - when

Bus passengers will be able to travel for free in Portsmouth during a special event.

People can use First Bus and Stagecoach services without buying a ticket on June 20. Portsmouth City Council (PCC) is running the scheme alongside both companies for Clean Air Day.

PCC chief executive Natalie Brahma-Pearl said: “Portsmouth City Council is working to improve air quality locally all year round. We know transport emissions are one of the largest contributors to poor air quality, and we are supporting people to do their bit by providing high quality green public transport in the form of electric buses and much more. Clean air is so important for healthy lives, and we encourage everyone to try out the bus for free on Clean Air Day and see how easy it is to make it part of your normal routine.”

All journeys within the Portsmouth boundary are part of the initiative. The local authority said one double decker bus can take up to 75 cars off the roads, significantly reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the city.

According to statistics issued by the Department for Transport, cars and vans are the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and other types of air pollution in the UK. The free travel initiative is also running during Better Transport Week - between June 17 and 23.

First Solent managing director Simon Goff said: “We’re proud to be supporting this fantastic initiative, helping people realise the many benefits of using the buses. With our new electric buses now in service across Portsmouth, we’re proud to be part of the change for cleaner air across the city.”

Marc Reddy, Stagecoach South managing director, added: “We’re pleased to be working with Portsmouth City Council on providing free travel on Clean Air Day. It’s a great opportunity for car users to try the bus and see just how easy, convenient, and environmentally friendly it is to travel around the city on our low emission buses. We hope it will encourage long-lasting travel habits and dramatically improve the air quality for residents in Portsmouth.”

Stagecoach unveils D-Day bus and confirms nationwide free travel for 80th D-Day anniversary and Armed Forces Day 2024

  • Free travel announced for military and ex-military personnel on 80th Anniversary of D-Day, 6 June 2024
  • Free travel also announced for military and ex-military personnel on 29 and 30 June
  • Liveried D-Day bus unveiled in partnership with The D-Day Story

As part of Stagecoach’s ongoing commitment to support the Armed Forces, the operator has today (4 June) confirmed free travel on its bus services across the UK, excluding Megabus and London, for military and ex-military personnel on both D-Day (6 June) and Armed Forces Day/Weekend 29 and 30 June.

Free travel will be available to serving personnel in uniform, carrying a military ID card, veterans carrying a medal or veteran’s badge, and cadets.

The announcement follows the unveiling of a special liveried D-Day bus by Stagecoach’s South team, in partnership with The D-Day Story, the only UK museum dedicated to telling the events of 6June 1944, through objects, interactives and video.

The bus forms part of a commemoration, headlined by the D-Day in 80 Objects book, which showcases 80 carefully selected objects spotlighting stories of individuals involved in the D-Day landings.

Stagecoach will be operating a special Park & Ride service with the D-Day and Poppy buses to get spectators to the event throughout the day and into the night.

Stagecoach will also offer free travel on 29 and 30 June for Armed Forces Day, which is a chance for the public to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community; from currently serving troops to Service families, veterans and cadets.

The commitment to free travel for the Armed Forces is supported by Stagecoach’s employee led Veterans Network.

Simon Tramalloni, Interim Operations Director at Stagecoach Merseyside and Veterans Network Chair, said; “We are extremely proud and honoured to confirm free travel for all serving personnel, veterans and cadets on the 80th D-Day commemoration throughout the UK. This is our ongoing commitment to the wider armed forces community and a privilege to remember those that in 1944 gave their tomorrow so we could have our today, this is the least we could do to honour their memory”.

Riding in a Stage

Creeping through the valley, crawling o’er the hill, Splashing through the branches, rumbling o’er the mill, Putting nervous gentlemen in a towering rage. What is so provoking as riding in a stage?

Spinsters fair and forty, maids in youthful charms, Suddenly are cast into their neighbors’ arms; Children shoot like squirrels darting through a cage- Isn’t it delightful, riding in a stage?

Feet are interlacing, heads severely bumped, Friend and foe together get their noses thumped; Dresses act as carpets-listen to the sage; “Life is but a journey taken in a stage.”

— From: Six Horses by Captain William Banning & George Hugh Banning, 1928.

Numerous stagecoach lines and express services dotted the American West as entrepreneurs fought to compete for passengers, freight, and, most importantly, profitable government mail contracts.

Often braving terrible weather, pitted roads, treacherous terrain, and Indian and bandit attacks, the stagecoach lines valiantly carried on during westward expansion, despite the hazards.

Though stagecoach travel for passengers was uncomfortable, it was often the only means of travel and was safer than traveling alone. If passengers wanted to sleep, they were required to sit up, and it was considered bad etiquette to rest one’s head on another passenger. There were also numerous other rules required of passengers, including abstaining from liquor, not cursing or smoking if ladies were present, and others.

Though many types of stagecoaches were used for various purposes, the most often used for passenger service was the Concord Stagecoach, first built in 1827.

Designed by the Abbot Downing Company , the coach utilized leather strap braces underneath, giving them a swinging motion instead of a spring suspension, which jostled passengers up and down. Over the years, the New Hampshire -based company manufactured over 40 types of carriages and wagons, earning a reputation that their coaches rarely broke down; instead, they just “wore out.” The coaches weighed more than a ton and cost between $1500 and $1800. The stages had three seats, providing nine passengers with little legroom. Passengers were also allowed to ride on top. The term “stage” originally referred to the distance between stations as each coach traveled the route in “stages.”

Stagecoach Robbery

Stagecoach Robbery

The stage lines’ most profitable contracts were U.S. Mail contracts, which were hotly contested. Though the Pony Express is often credited with being the first fast mail service from the Missouri River to the Pacific Coast, the Overland Mail Company began a  twice-weekly mail service in September 1858. Each service crossed more than 2,800 miles from San Francisco , California , to Missouri and was required to be completed in 25 days or less.

Along the many stage routes, stations were established about every 12  miles that included two types of stations — “swing” and “home.” As the stage driver neared the station, they would blow a small brass bugle or trumpet to alert the station staff of the impending arrival.

The larger stations, called “Home Stations,” generally run by a couple or family, were usually situated about 50 miles apart and provided passengers with meager meals and overnight lodging. However, “lodging” was often no more than a dirt floor.

These stations also included stables where the horses could be changed, a blacksmith and repair shop, and a telegraph station. Here, drivers were usually switched.

Stagecoach Rules

Stagecoach Rules

The more numerous “swing” stations, generally run by a few bachelor stock tenders, were smaller and usually consisted of little more than a small cabin and a barn or corral. Here, the coach would stop for about ten minutes to change the team and allow passengers to stretch before the coach was on its way again.

At one time, more than 150 stations were situated between Kansas and California .

Though there were numerous lines throughout the Old West , some figure into history more prominently than others, most notably John Butterfield’s Overland Mail Company , Wells Fargo & Co. , and the Holladay Overland Mail and Express Company.

As the railroad continued to push westward, stagecoach service became less and less in demand. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, transcontinental stage-coaching ended.

However, this was not the end of the stagecoach, as it continued to be utilized in areas without railroad service for several more decades. In the end, the introduction of the automobile led to the end of the stagecoach in the early 1900s.

Stagecoach announces free weekend bus travel in some parts of Aberdeenshire throughout January

free travel stagecoach

First Bus and Stagecoach will offer free travel across Aberdeen city and the Aberdeen Commuter Zone part of the Shire every weekend in January.

Both operators are reinvesting the savings from the introduction of the new bus gates in the city to benefit customers.

The offer is a direct impact of the improvements both operators have seen thanks to the new bus priority measures in Aberdeen with the new bus gates already speeding up journey times for over 600,000 people each month in the city centre.

Both First Bus and Stagecoach committed to reinvesting savings made from the new measures to directly benefit customers and this offer could be the sign of things to come if bus priority measures are further enhanced throughout Aberdeen.

The free travel offer is designed to provide just that by reducing costs at a time of year when finances can be tight for many while encouraging more people to use the bus and increase footfall in the city centre.

The new bus priority measures are already reducing pollution and congestion in the city centre, while slashing journey times by up to 25 per cent, with bus passengers seeing an improvement in punctuality and reliability.

Stagecoach Zone map

Graeme Macfarlan, Commercial Director for First Bus Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer free travel across all First Bus routes in Aberdeen throughout January and the subsequent benefits that will bring to people travelling around the city.

“We understand January can be a difficult month for people for many different reasons and we felt this offer was a great way to reinvest the savings we are seeing from the new bus priority measures in the city centre while also encouraging more people to take the bus more often.

“Sustainable, reliable and affordable transport is a cornerstone of making any city centre a success and we will continue to play our part alongside our investment in zero emission vehicles with nearly 50 now in operation across the city each day.”

David Beaton, Managing Director for Stagecoach North Scotland, said: "This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to working together as local public transport providers to ensure a bright, clean, and prosperous future for Aberdeen.

"Through providing free travel on our city services and within the Aberdeen commuter zone, we hope to give the city centre a boost during a challenging time of year, both for customers and local businesses, whilst encouraging modal shift to more sustainable forms of transport."

Free bus travel will be available on the following dates in January: 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28.

For Aberdeenshire, the Aberdeen Commuter Zone covers Inverurie, Ellon, Kemnay, Kintore, Banchory Oldmeldrum, Westhill, Portlethen and Stonehaven.

Concession card holders will still be required to scan their card during the offer period.

free travel stagecoach

Stagecoach South West will be offering days of free bus travel in Exeter in an effort to make up for the company's reliability in recent months.

The traffic commissioner ordered Stagecoach to deliver £120,000 of free travel after an investigation found 21% of services had not run to timetable.

Bus journeys will be free over the weekends of 10, 11 December and 17, 18 December within the Exeter Plus travel Zone. Free travel will be available on the routes of all Exeter city services as well as parts of some bus routes that enter in and out of Exeter City Centre.

This includes journeys across Exeter and within the boundaries of Ottery St Mary, Cullompton, Bickleigh, Crediton, Okehampton, Whitestone, Longdown, Kennford, Teignmouth, Exton, Woodbury, Woodbury Salterton, Nine Oaks Cross and Exmouth, excluding Sandy Bay.

Stagecoach South West Managing Director Mike Watson said: ‘We deeply regret the level of service experienced by some of our passengers in recent months.

"Moving forward, our priority is to build on the extensive steps we have been taking to drive up the reliability of our services for our local communities.

"We are committed to working with our local authority partners to ensure these improvements continue and are sustained.”

Over the two weekends customers will not need to purchase a ticket within the free travel zone.

Customers who have pre-purchased tickets are being reminded not to activate them on the free travel dates and to save them for another day.

Stagecoach hopes that the free travel weekends will give customers an opportunity to give the bus a try again, whilst easing traffic into the city.

Stagecoach West to offer free travel to veterans, military personnel and cadets over the Remembrance Weekend as brand-new Poppy Coach takes to the road.

Stagecoach West has announced free travel for veterans, serving personnel and cadets on all of its bus services, including The Oxford Tube, on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday as a mark of respect to those who have and continue to serve.

Any veteran wearing medals or a Veteran’s badge, serving personnel or cadets in uniform, or with proof of military ID, can travel for free on all Stagecoach services on Saturday 11 th  and Sunday 12 th  November 2023.  Armed forces personnel in uniform or carrying ID will also be entitled to free travel.

The bus company has also commissioned a specially wrapped Poppy Coach, designed and created with support from the Armed Forces Covenant and MOD.  The coach will be seen on the Oxford Tube route between Carterton and London. All Stagecoach West’s local buses will also be proudly sporting poppies throughout November.

Rachel Geliamassi, Managing Director, Stagecoach West said: “Many of our employees have served or have friends or family members with a connection to the Armed Forces, so it’s really important we show our support.

“We hope that the offer of free travel over Remembrance Weekend will enable those who want to attend services across the region and pay their respects to do so with ease.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our passengers, drivers and teams for their generous donations to the Royal British Legion and their annual Poppy Appeal to help them continue their vital work.

“The introduction of our Poppy coach is a longer-term gesture of appreciation and gratitude in recognition of the unique obligations of, and sacrifices made by, the Armed Forces. This has been created in conjunction with the Armed Forces Covenant which pledges to treat those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces with fairness and respect.”

Sam Berkson, National Account Manager for Defence Relationship Management said: “I’d like to thank Stagecoach West for this public and very visible commitment to the Armed Forces community. It is clear that Stagecoach recognises the benefits of being a Forces-friendly employer and I look forward to their continued support for Defence and advocacy for its people.”

The ongoing free travel commitment, including on Armed Forces Day in the summer reinforces Stagecoach’s commitment to its employee-led UK-wide Ex-Forces Veterans’ Network – an initiative set up to help the Armed Forces with charity work and events, support ex-forces applications and make courses for veterans easily accessible.  Stagecoach’s work with the Armed Forces won them a prestigious Silver Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Award in July, recognising the bus operator as one of the top 100 employers for Armed Forces communities and Veterans in the UK.
