Roundtrip flights from the United States will cost about $1,100. Tourism is also quite low this time of year and you will not run into large crowds.

You may not know much about what this country has in terms of prices, weather, and cultural festivals. Follow along as we briefly outline the basics of what to expect on your trip to Ghana.

When Not To Visit Ghana

Temperatures and prices stay relatively stable throughout the year in Ghana. However,  June and July can be difficult months to visit the country due to the levels of rain and influx of western tourists .

Rains can flood inland roadways and beaches can get crowded which are not ideal conditions for a vacation. Ghana is a very warm country with temperatures being pretty much the same year-round.  But the  rainy summer months bring intense humidity to the country, making it a less than ideal time to visit.

Cheapest Month To Visit Ghana

February is the cheapest month to visit Ghana . It is the last month of the dry season but experiences lots of dusty winds blowing in from the Sahara desert. You will not find too many activities or festivals this time of year either.

This means that there are pretty low crowds this time of year  as well.  The dusty winds tend to cloud the beaches and national parks, but you will still find good days to explore the outdoors! Your trip will be more mild and relaxed if your visit Ghana in February.

Best Month To Visit Ghana

Many native Ghanaians say that December is the best month to visit  their country.  With multifaceted holiday celebrations and ideal weather, there is a lot of freedom to enjoy the country this month!

October is another great time to see Ghana ,  as the summer rains have left and the humidity begins to decrease.  You will not see many crowds during this month and travel around the country is relatively cheap.

When is the Best Time To Visit Ghana: Monthly Breakdown

January: best for wildlife spotting.

This month brings in the new year in Ghana being the driest month on the calendar.  You will typically see  highs of 32℃ / 90℉ .  and practically no rain.

January is a very cheap time to visit Ghana.  A roundtrip flight from New York will cost about $1,000  to the capital of Accra . A room in Accra’s 4-star Marriott hotel is  $260 a night , but you can easily find much more affordable housing depending on where you stay.

A great opportunity to visit this time of year is to experience the native  Mfantsefo  New Year Celebration of Edina Bronya .  The holiday is rooted in Ghanas’ complex history and serves several functions for the community.

Edina Bronya thanks the ancestors for their blessings and welcomes the new year. It takes place on the first Thursday of January on our calendar and is a perfect introduction to Ghana!

February: Cheapest Month To Visit Ghana

February is a hot time to visit Ghana, with the average daily high temperatures being 32℃ / 90℉ .  This is a very windy time of year, with the harmattan winds from the Sahara haze the skies and cloud up the views.

This is the cheapest month to visit Ghana with a roundtrip flight costing just $900  from New York . A hotel room is at its cheapest as well, costing just $230 a night in a 4-star room.

March: Ghana’s Independence

As the summer sun beings to shine on Ghana the temperatures get higher without the relief of rain.  The month is usually regarded to be  the hottest month in Ghana, with highs of 32℃ / 90℉.

Prices increase slightly as summer approaches.  Flights from New York will cost ab out $1,150 roundtrip, and hotel prices tend to go up to $260  in a 4-star hotel room.  This is for the country’s independence celebrations.

The rains begin to pick up in Ghana in May, so temperatures drop slightly.  Average high temperatures in Accra are around 31℃ / 88℉ . With the coming rain, you will find festivals around the country bringing good luck for plentiful harvests in the fall.

As western tourists begin to arrive, prices begin to increase.  Flights from New York cost about  $1,200 round trip .  A 4-star room in a hotel in Accra will cost about $260 a night in May.

July: Most Expensive Month To Visit

With the rains in full swing, temperatures are usually at their coolest, but this is also matched with more humidity.  Average peak temperatures are 28℃ / 82℉  in bustling cities such as Accra.

This tends to be the most expensive month to visit Ghana as prices capitalize on summer travel from the western world.  Flights are roughly $1,400 round  trip, and a single night in a 4-star hotel will cost $290.

August is a relatively quiet month in Ghana, but there are still many ways to enjoy the country even if you run into some summer rain.  The average temperature high reaches 28℃ / 82℉ .

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in West Africa,  Ghana  has something for every kind of traveler . From its cosmopolitan capital to historic cities steeped in Ashanti culture, the country is known for its urban flair; while its parks and game reserves are filled with exotic wildlife. On the coast, secluded beaches are interspersed with forts that serve as a reminder of Ghana's tragic role in the slave trade. This is one of the region's wealthiest, most stable countries - making it a great starting point for first-time visitors to Africa . 

Ghana is located on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa . It shares land borders with Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Togo. 

With a total area of 92,098 miles/ 238,533 square kilometers, Ghana is similar in size to the United Kingdom.

The capital of Ghana is Accra, located on the country's southern shore.

According to July 2016 estimates by the CIA World Factbook, Ghana has a population of almost 27 million people. Akan is the largest ethnic group, accounting for approximately half of the total population. 

English is the official language and the lingua franca in Ghana. However, around 80 indigenous languages are also spoken - of these, Akan dialects like Ashanti and Fante are the most widely used. 

Christianity is the most popular religion in Ghana, accounting for 71% of the population. Just over 17% of Ghanaians identify as Muslim.

Thanks to its equatorial location, Ghana has a tropical climate with hot weather all year round. Although temperatures vary slightly according to geographical region, you can expect daily averages of around 85°F/ 30°C. The wet season generally lasts from May to September (although in the south of the country there are two rainy seasons - March to June, and September to November). 

When to Go:

The best time to visit Ghana  is during the dry season (October to April), when precipitation is limited and humidity is at its lowest. This is also the time of year with the least mosquitoes, while unpaved roads are usually in good condition.

Cape Coast and Elmina Castles

The whitewashed castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are the most impressive of Ghana's remaining slave forts. Built in the 17th and 15th centuries respectively, both served as holding stations for African slaves en route to Europe and the Americas. Today, castle tours and museum exhibits offer an emotional insight into one of the darkest periods of human history.

With a reputation as one of the safest capital cities in West Africa, Accra is a bustling metropolis known as much for its traditional culture as it is for its music scene, restaurants and nightclubs. Top attractions include colorful Makola Market (a great place to shop for souvenirs); and the National Museum, home of Ashanti, Ghanaian and slave trade artifacts. 

Kakum National Park

Located in southern Ghana, Kakum National Park offers visitors the chance to explore a tract of unspoiled tropical rainforest filled with fascinating animals - including rare forest elephants and buffalo. Over 250 different bird species have been recorded within the park, and there's an excellent canopy walkway measuring some 1150 feet/350 meters. 

Mole National Park

As Ghana's largest national park, Mole is the top safari destination for visiting wildlife lovers. It is home to elephant, buffalo, leopard and the rare roan antelope. If you're lucky, you may spot one of the park's recently re-introduced lions, while the birdlife here is also fantastic. There are options for vehicle and walking safaris under the supervision of a local guide. 

Getting There

Located in Accra, Kotoka International Airport (ACC) is Ghana's main gateway for overseas travelers. Major airlines that fly to Kotoka International Airport include Delta Airlines, British Airways, Emirates and South African Airways. Visitors from most countries (including those in North America and Europe) will need a visa to enter the country - check this website or consult with your nearest embassy for further details on requirements and processing times.

Medical Requirements

As well as ensuring that your routine vaccines are up-to-date, you will need to be vaccinated against yellow fever before traveling to Ghana. Anti- malaria prophylactics are strongly recommended, as are vaccines for Hepatitis A and typhoid. 18 things to know before traveling to Ghana

Travelers have plenty to look forward to on their trip to culturally rich Ghana .

Welcoming Ghana is considered one of the friendliest spots in West Africa, and with its compelling history, vibrant clothing prints and flavorful dishes , tourists keep coming back for more.

Life in Ghana generally moves at a slow, relaxed pace, but it can also be chaotic and fast in different settings. Embrace the cultural differences, mass traffic and intense bargaining, and you may fall in love with the place. Whether you're a first-time visitor or returning once again, here's what you need to know to prepare for your trip to Ghana.

1. Gather the necessary documents for entry

Getting the paperwork together to visit Ghana is a process on its own and can be pricey. All visitors to Ghana must have a valid visa , and they range in cost depending on whether you apply for a single-entry or multiple-entry visa. Your visa for Ghana can take nearly three weeks to arrive unless you shell out extra for an expedited service.

A yellow fever vaccine is also required for entry into Ghana. Check with your local health department or medical clinics to get vaccinated. Malaria pills are also strongly recommended for visitors and can be prescribed by your doctor. If you can't get your hands on them before coming, pharmacies in Ghana have plenty in stock, and they tend to be a lot cheaper.

2. Carry a copy of your passport

If you plan to visit different cities outside of Accra , be sure to print a copy of your passport to keep in your bag as you travel around the country. Police stops are common, and officers are known to ask for passport information.

3. Forget you have a left hand

In Ghana, actions like eating, waving and handing an item to someone are to be done with your right hand only (sorry, left-handers!). From an early age, many Ghanaians are taught that their left hand is to be used for cleaning themselves in the bathroom. Therefore, your left hand is considered filthy and should not be used for eating and other activities. Using your left hand for gestures and main tasks is considered highly disrespectful.

4. Eating with your hands is a cultural practice

Soup-based meals are paired with a starch staple food like fufu or banku and eaten with your hands (remember the right-hand rule!). Be observant of how those around you are eating, embrace the culture and dig in.

5. Keep your thumbs down 

While the thumbs-up gesture in many places signifies approval, in Ghana, it shows disrespect. 

6. Always greet others 

Greetings in Ghana are a big deal, and it’s considered rude to not greet others. When you enter a room, you should say hello, good morning, good afternoon or good evening. When you meet a group of adults and greet them with a handshake, start with the person on the farthest right. 

7. Respect your elders

Respect for elders is immense in Ghana. You should not greet elders with a hat on your head. If you are wearing a hat, take it off completely or lift it halfway while extending your greeting. Give up your seat on the bus for those older than you. Crossing your legs and having your hands in your pockets in the presence of elders are gestures that are frowned upon. 

8. Be mindful of clothing cultures from city to city

Ghanaian clothing culture tends to lean more towards the conservative side. Accra is more relaxed, and you’re likely to see more shorts and crop tops. However, people elsewhere tend to cover up, so bring clothing that covers your chest and shoulders and reaches or goes past your knees.

9. Learn common phrases in Twi and other languages 

Ghana is home to many different languages and ethnic groups. Twi, Ewe, Ga and Krobo are a few of many languages spoken depending on the region. English is widely spoken, but it's important to remember that not everyone speaks it, especially once you are out of Accra and into rural parts of Ghana. Learning a few phrases in the local language is always appreciated and embraced by Ghanaians.

10. Watch your belongings

Pickpocketing and instances of petty theft might be the biggest concern you'll have in Ghana. Pickpocketing can be prevalent in crowded areas like Osu, Madina and Makola Market. Always keep your bag in front of you and away from the roadside to avoid snatching incidents. Don't carry a large amount of cash on you.

Your phone should always be in sight and accounted for. Motorcyclists in Accra are known to snatch phones out of the hands of people as they are passing by both in cars and when walking. It is wise to never stick your phone out of a car window for pictures and videos.

11. Expect the police to stop you

Police stops in Ghana occur frequently, mainly at night but they can happen throughout the day. Your vehicle can be randomly searched by officers, and they may ask for ID and search your bag. These searches usually last for about five minutes, and it is best to comply. 

Bribery is common in Ghana, and you may be asked to "dash" officers, which means tip. You can choose to give it or not as it's often only C10 to C20 (US$0.95 to US$1.90), but it may make the difference between a five-minute stop and a 40-minute one.

Police encounters in Ghana are generally nothing to worry about. Officers may have a “tough guy” attitude, but as you talk to them more, the guard comes down and they are usually friendly. 

12. Be wary of swift romantic encounters

It’s easy to meet new people in Ghana, and conversations are always flowing. People are open to new connections and tend to get close quickly at times, but be careful of fast-moving romantic approaches and those who immediately ask for favors or money. Scams are common in Ghana and can occur in romantic encounters.

13. Be sure to carry cash

When you’re in Ghana, always have some cash on you, or you may find yourself stuck. Not every establishment accepts card payments, and if they do, the POS systems are often down. ATMs are everywhere in Ghana, so getting cash is easy. You can still bring both credit and debit cards, but be prepared that not everywhere in Ghana will accept them.

Forex Bureau exchange shops will change your cash to Ghanaian cedis. Large denomination bills (100s) will get you a higher exchange rate.

14. Avoid drinking the water 

Drinking tap water in Ghana is not a good idea because there’s no guarantee that the water has gone through the proper measures to ensure it is safe. Boil your water or use a water filter before you drink it.

15. Expect weak wi-fi in most areas

Ask your accommodation about wi-fi speeds before your arrival if you plan to use it. Even if internet speeds aren’t the best where you’re staying, you can find reliable spots such as Vida e Caffè and Basecamp Initiative .  

16. Use cash for Uber and Bolt

Download Uber and Bolt before you arrive. While paying by card is an option on both apps, don’t plan on using it. Many drivers prefer cash and will cancel your ride if they find out you are paying using your card, or it could be an issue once you arrive at your destination. You can always ask the driver to stop at an ATM before the final drop-off point. 

17. Get a local phone number

Ghana is a place where verbal conversations are preferred over texting and online communication. You can get a local SIM card at Vodafone , a phone carrier at A&C Mall in Accra, so that you have a Ghanaian number. Drivers often call their passengers to find out exactly where they are.

18. Never underestimate Accra traffic 

Accra traffic is nothing to be played with. You may see an attraction that you want to check out that is only 15 minutes away from your accommodations but it might take an hour and a half simply because of the volume of traffic. It's best not to set reservations for a place if you don't have to. While traffic and delays can be extremely frustrating, you’ll have to learn to go with the flow.

Northern Ghana has a rainy season from April to mid-October while the southern part of the country experiences the most rain from April to June before a momentary respite from the rains between July and August, and then again some ran picking up in September and October. Rainfall can restrict access to some inland places and also make it difficult to spot animals, but the country becomes lush and green. Between June and September, many tourists arrive in the country, so you should make your travel and accommodation reservations early.

For those in the know, Ghana after dark is a famously good time. But in December, the nation’s nightlife comes into its own. So much so that the phrase ‘December in Ghana’ has become synonymous with events that don’t wind down until dawn.

Ghanaians celebrate the festive season with a spate of festivals that draw together some of the biggest names in African music.

Afrochella is a celebration of African music, art, food, and fashion. A yearly event between Christmas and New Year, it welcomes nearly 10,000 visitors to enjoy everything from acrobatic performances to the best African music. It’s a joyful way to end the year.

Wildaland Festival happens around the same time, between the 24 th -27 th  of December, gathering top musicians and chefs for a two-day party in the lush setting of the Shai Forest Reserve outside Accra. After listening to the VVIP decks and DJs on the main stage, wander the international food market, before settling down to relax at the campsite while taking in the beautiful natural surroundings.

Back in the city, there’s something going on every night in December. Bloombar packs the last two weeks of the year with a full calendar of events – including the Afrochella official afterparty if you can’t bear for the fun to stop. Daytime events, such as DLT, blend brunch and Hip-Hop for a quieter experience before the party starts at night.

This year, Afronation festival makes a return to Accra on the 29th-30th of December, promising A-list global acts from the world of Afrobeats, R’n’B, Hip-Hop and dancehall. Arrive in the afternoon and leave early the next morning.

A mainstay of December, the annual Taste of Ghana festival is an immersive experience for visitors wanting to explore Ghana in one place. Music, food, fashion, art – it’s a perfect place for a crash course in everything Ghanaian.

Bask in the lively atmosphere at Labadi Beach

Labadi Beach, which people also call La Pleasure Beach, is the most popular strip of sand in Ghana. It’s a stunning location, but the dynamic atmosphere is what makes Labadi Beach a memorable experience.

Colorful umbrellas spread over tables set right into the sand.   Here you can sip on cocktails shaken with locally brewed alcohol, taste fresh sugarcane from a passing vendor, or try the grilled tilapia fish while performers fill the days and nights with the sound of drums and dancing. 

As the sun sets, bonfires crackle to life and the sounds of reggae and Afrobeats start to pulse through the night.

For a more tranquil experience, step into the Labadi Beach Hotel. It features stunning gardens and a spa offering relaxing treatments.

Explore Ghana’s coastline

Ghana’s beaches aren’t only the backdrop for bonfire-lit parties. The seafront resorts are the perfect places to enjoy coastal views and begin exploring. Start with Kokrobite Beach, 45 minutes from Accra, all the way out to the rocky knuckle of Cape Three Points, where you can find many places to eat, drink, and relax, ranging from high-end to rustic. 

Ghana’s coastline is home to diverse sea life, providing opportunities to go on moonlit sea turtle walks or head out in the day to watch dolphins, whales, and manatees in their natural environment. 

Between the lively ports of Cape Coast and Elmina are several excellent resorts, including Lemon Beach Resort and Coconut Grove Beach Resort.

Further west lies Busua. One of Ghana’s most famous surf spots, Busua has the requisite chill of a small fishing and surfing town. Colorful fishing boats are often drawn up onto the beach and you can eat the day’s catch at the small restaurants lining the sand.

Accra has a buzzing dining scene, with diverse cuisine on offer, from traditional to fusion. The Mix restaurant is run by a team of young chefs, creating modern takes on Ghanaian classics and European dishes. Palm Moments is a creative hub, attracting a diverse crowd with its relaxed atmosphere and restaurant, helped by a comprehensive cocktail menu. Meteo Agency predicts cloudy weather and moderate rain in coastal Ghana

The Meteorological Agency has issued a forecast for cloudy weather and moderate rain across the coastal regions of Ghana on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

According to the forecast released by the agency, the morning hours will be characterized by predominantly cloudy skies with intermittent slight to moderate rainfall expected in various coastal areas.

“The morning hours will be dominated by mostly cloudy conditions with cases of slight to moderate rain over some areas along the coastal sector. Into the afternoon hours, variably cloudy weather with some likelihood of thunderstorms with or without rain across most areas in the southern half,”

“However, cloudy conditions are expected over most places in the evening with chances of thunderstorms or rain over the northern sector and some parts of the transition and middle sectors. Mist and fog patches will form over hilly and forest areas in the early hours of this morning which will reduce visibility,” it added.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to take necessary precautions, especially those in coastal and hilly regions, to mitigate any adverse effects of the forecasted weather conditions. The Meteorological Agency will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as necessary.

This World Environment Day, themed "Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience," UNICEF Ghana sheds light on the pressing issue of environmental protection for the well-being of Ghana's future generation. While environmental pollution and climate change threaten everyone, children and young people are especially vulnerable and bear the brunt of environmental pollution. Their developing bodies are less equipped to fight off harmful toxins and diseases caused by a polluted environment.

Here are 5 key points to remember:

• Air pollution is a major health threat:   Smoke from car exhausts, industries, burning waste, and cooking with firewood pollutes the air, causing respiratory problems like asthma and even premature death.
• Improper waste management harms children:   Burning electronic waste releases dangerous chemicals, and pollution from unregulated mining contaminates water and food sources. These toxins can damage children's developing bodies.
• Poor sanitation leads to illness: Unsanitary conditions and contaminated water sources pose a significant health risk for children, causing infections and water-borne diseases.
• Climate change brings extreme weather:  Rising temperatures and floods linked to climate change can lead to heatstroke, waterborne illnesses, and other weather-related diseases.
• Everyone has a role to play:   The government can enforce regulations, civil society can promote environmental practices, caregivers can protect children, and young people can be agents of change in their communities.

Kenya’s Economy Exhibited Robust Growth in 2023 Despite Persistent Challenges

Nairobi, June 5, 2024  — Kenya’s real GDP growth accelerated to 5.6% in 2023, surpassing the previous year’s growth of 4.9%. However, GDP growth in 2024 is expected to slow down to 5.0%. This is according to the latest Kenya Economic Update (KEU) launched today, which adds that the 2023 growth was driven by the recovery of the agriculture sector, following improved weather conditions, and the services sector, with tourism and financial services contributing the most. 

According to the 29 th edition of the Kenya Economic Update: Fostering Trade for Robust Growth and Dynamic Job Creation, tight fiscal and monetary policies, elevated inflation, rising debt service obligations, high borrowing costs that constrained access to global capital markets, and the sharp depreciation of the shilling, framed Kenya’s macroeconomic performance in 2023. Despite this challenging environment, Kenya's economic growth demonstrated resilience and accelerated, driven by the government’s strategic policy measures that have bolstered overall macroeconomic stability.

“ In a decisive move to stabilize the macroeconomic environment, the Government of Kenya successfully conducted a partial buyback of the Eurobond in February 2024, a move that significantly eased the immediate liquidity constraints for the year, instilling a sense of calm in the markets ,” said Keith Hansen, World Bank Country Director for Kenya. “ The improved macroeconomic conditions, and re-access to international financial markets, are anticipated to boost investor confidence and private investment.”

The KEU projects a GDP growth of 5.2% on average during 2024-26, underpinned by favorable weather conditions for the agricultural sector, a recovery of industry, and the resilience of services. The outlook assumes adequate rainfall, government staying on the fiscal consolidation path, and the continuous implementation of the government’s structural reform agenda. The report projects that the private sector will play a stronger role in Kenya’s medium-term recovery.

Kenya’s efforts in trade integration could significantly contribute to substantial economic growth and job creation, notes the KEU whose special focus is on the role of trade integration in promoting economic growth and job creation. Trade patterns shows that agriculture is the largest contributor to Kenya’s exports, followed by minerals and chemicals. Kenya’s exports, however, have significantly underperformed. Also, the country has not diversified its products in the past few years and has lost competitiveness in the markets to which is has been exporting. 

The report notes that Kenya is proactively utilizing all channels on the global, continental, and regional level to enhance its role in the global economy and increase regional and international trade integration. Its aspirations extend beyond export growth, aiming to convert this growth into job opportunities.  

“Even though the export-to-GDP ratio has been declining, the potential for export expansion remains significant,” said Naomi Mathenge, World Bank Senior Economist for Kenya. “ Targeted policy considerations are crucial to fully capitalize on economic growth and robust job creation from trade integration.” 

Some of these policy considerations include revising trade and investment policies to foster export orientation, cementing policy coherence and predictability, strengthening institutions, enhancing strategic skills development, multifaceted support to export orientation and, drawing in more Foreign Direct Investment as a lever for optimizing the role of trade integration. The country will need to also mitigate trade and climate related vulnerabilities, especially for agricultural exports.
