Over her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II paid numerous visits to Canada and its westernmost province British Columbia.

But it was a young princess that Elizabeth — then Duchess of Edinburgh — embarked on her first coast-to-coast tour of the country.

On Oct. 8, 1951, Elizabeth’s train pulled into Vancouver with Prince Philip. The couple would later visit Victoria and Nanaimo, before enjoying a private retreat in Qualicum Beach.

She departed on Nov. 12, only three months before she acceded the throne upon the death of her father George VI.

As news echoed across the world of Queen Elizabeth II’s death Thursday, we look back at her seven visits to this corner of the Commonwealth.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Canada more than any other country and outside of the nation’s capital, the longest-reigning monarch in British history came to the city named for her great-great grandmother the most.

The Queen visited Victoria seven times, and the most British part of Canada’s most British province held a special place in her heart.

“We have retained happiest memories of the warm welcome given to us,” she said during a 1983 visit to B.C.’s capital. “We are now looking forward to renewing our friendship with British Columbians in the coming days.”

The Queen’s first official visit — when she was still Princess Elizabeth — was in 1951, a year before she ascended to the throne.

First Nations dancers entertained the smiling princess and a dashing young Prince Philip, whom she’d married in 1947. The trip also included what would be the first of three visits to Nanaimo.

Queen Elizabeth’s next visit was in 1959, part of a cross-country tour of Canada to open the St. Lawrence Seaway that saw her and the Duke of Edinburgh visit every Canadian province and territory.

In 1971, Princess Anne joined the Queen and Prince Philip as they visited Victoria to mark a century since B.C. joined confederation. The trip also saw the royals go to Comox and Tofino.

For that visit and the 1983 tour the Queen arrived and stayed on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

A cheering crowd roared its welcome in 1983, despite the grey and wet day, and a tea party was held for 10,000 in her majesty’s honour.

During that trip, the Queen also visited Centennial Square and watched lion dancers in Canada’s oldest Chinatown.

More crowds greeted her outside Victoria’s Christchurch Cathedral, where she dedicated two new bells — one in honour of her grandson, Prince William.

The Queen also unveiled a plaque at Craigflower School, the oldest school building still standing in Western Canada, and inspected cadets at Royal Roads.

That trip included a visit to Nanaimo, where the Queen also received a warm welcome.

The Queen and Prince Philip returned just four years later, in 1987.

After a 21-gun salute, the Queen did what she loved best — a walkabout in the crowd as people waved flags and gave her flowers, putting the tour behind schedule. On that visit, the royals also went to Qualicum Beach for the weekend.

They returned in 1994 for the Commonwealth Games, thanking attendees for “joining us in this great moment of British Columbia pride.”

Whether it was visiting the Athlete’s Village, touring Commonwealth venues or attending events, the Queen made quite an impression.

It was also on this trip that the queen unveiled a bust of herself at Beacon Hill Park, arriving in the same car she rode in during her 1951 visit.

There were also gala dinners, and even a brief stop en route to the airport to see the Corgi Club.

Queen Elizabeth’s final visit to Victoria was in 2002 for her Golden Jubilee.

Large crowds greeted the Queen everywhere she went, with people lining up for hours to get a glimpse of her majesty, but the largest crowds were at the B.C. Legislature with more than 23,000 people gathering on the lawn to see the Queen of Canada.

Queen Elizabeth Alexandra Mary reigned for 70 years. She died at age 96 on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022.

From Nanaimo bathtub races to Victoria parades: Looking back at Queen Elizabeth's visits to Vancouver Island

People across the world are commemorating the life of British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, who died Thursday at the age of 96 .

The British and Canadian head of state was respected by many people across the world, and made seven official trips to Vancouver Island, six of which occurred during her 70 years on the throne.

FIRST VISIT

Her first official visit to Vancouver Island was in 1951, when she was still Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh.

During the trip, she visited Victoria and Nanaimo, making stops at the B.C. legislature building as well as taking a short holiday in Qualicum Beach.

"Three months after leaving Canada, Princess Elizabeth would begin her reign as Queen Elizabeth II," said the B.C. government in a release Thursday.

SECOND VISIT

She visited the island again about a decade later in 1959, making stops at Government House in Victoria, as well as Nanaimo.

While in the Harbour City, the Queen was given the name "Ar-Oh-Muthl," or "Mother of All People" by the Coast Salish people, according to the province.

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog says Queen Elizabeth II was an example of "real leadership."

"For someone of my generation, she has been my monarch throughout my life," Krog told CTV News on Thursday.

"And the symbolism of her devotion to her job, the role she was given without desire on the sudden death of her father, shows an example of what real leadership is about," he said.

BATHTUB DERBY

In 1971, the Queen returned to the island to mark B.C.'s 100th anniversary of entering the Canadian Confederation.

Her visit included a trip to Nanaimo where she watched one of the city's famous bathtub races.

FOURTH VISIT

Twelve years later, a crowd of approximately 15,000 people gathered in Victoria's Inner Harbour to greet Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1983.

While in Victoria, the royal couple visited Christ Church Cathedral, the Royal Road Military College (now known as Royal Roads University) in Colwood, and the University of Victoria.

She also visited Nanaimo, this time arriving by boat. The Queen sailed to the Mid-Island community on a yacht flanked by a "flotilla of bathtubs," according to the province.

FIFTH VISIT

In 1987, the royal couple returned to B.C. to help unveil the province's updated coat of arms. Before the ceremony, the couple had a private holiday in Qualicum Beach.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Seven years later, in 1994, the Queen returned to Canada to help open the Commonwealth Games, which were being hosted in Victoria. During that trip, she also visited Canadian Forces Base Comox.

GOLDEN JUBILEE

Her most recent official visit to Vancouver Island occurred in 2002. The Queen was in Canada marking her Golden Jubilee, which celebrated her 50th year on the throne.

During this trip, she visited Christ Church Cathedral again to attend a Sunday service, and helped unveil a stained-glass window at the B.C. legislature.

Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps describes the Queen's passing as a "big loss."

"You don't think that somebody like that is ever going to pass, which is ridiculous because she is a human being, but there's almost a moment of disbelief," said Helps.

"We've seen her for our whole lives – she has been the Queen. There's a way in which people like her with her legacy and her stature almost seem immortal," she said.

B.C. Premier John Horgan issued a statement Thursday acknowledging that many British Columbians are affected by the Queen's death.

"The Queen will be remembered for her full-hearted service to her people, and her steadfast commitment to her duties as the sovereign and head of the Commonwealth," he said.

Planes, trains and the yacht Britannia: The 1959 royal visit

Opening of st. lawrence seaway was just one stop in 45-day tour that included chicago, social sharing.

queen elizabeth visit to victoria bc

When Queen Elizabeth visited Canada with her husband, Prince Philip, in 1959, CBC was there to cover it every stop of the way, from their landing in Torbay, N.L., to their departure six weeks later.

And when the CBC's Joyce Davidson, a host of the evening current affairs program Tabloid , suggested such heavy coverage might have exceeded the public appetite, the network suspended her.

"Like most Canadians, I'm indifferent to the visit of the Queen," Davidson had told an NBC morning show the day the royal couple arrived, according to the Toronto Star.

The comment became front-page news and Davidson was temporarily kicked off Tabloid .

'A little annoyed'

queen elizabeth visit to victoria bc

Davidson had been in New York that week as a guest on Today  with host Dave Garroway. He seemed "surprised" by the comment, and Davidson elaborated.

"We're a little annoyed at still being dependent," she said.

Lyle Brown, director of information for the CBC, said management did not share Davidson's view.

"If we were uninterested, needless to say, we would not be expending such efforts to cover the royal visit fully," he said, and cited a viewership of five million for live coverage of a speech by the Queen in Canada in 1957.

A first for Newfoundland

The tour starts in Torbay, N.L.

It was a "beautiful summer day" when the Queen's plane landed at the Canadian air base in Torbay, N.L., said host Bill Herbert on the first event of the tour to be carried on live television.

"It is the first live telecast ever from Newfoundland," said Herbert.

The technological development that was made possible by the completion of the east-west microwave network.

Gov. Gen.Vincent Massey was first to greet the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh after they descended the stairs from the aircraft.

Lengthy itinerary

queen elizabeth visit to victoria bc

According to  a detailed tour itinerary in the Globe and Mail published in January 1959, shortly after the tour was announced, the pair spent time in St. John's and Corner Brook, N.L., before moving on to Sept-Îles, Que. to board the royal yacht Britannia.

Along the way, they travelled to Schefferville in northern Quebec for a tour of what was reported by the CBC to be the province's northernmost mine.

Film taken by CBC of much of the 1959 royal tour survives, but much of it is silent.

Crowds at namesake hotel

A ball in Montreal

After getting on the Britannia, the Queen and Prince Philip travelled down the St. Lawrence River, stopping along the way and reaching Montreal on June 25, 1959.

The night, they attended a ball at the city's Queen Elizabeth Hotel, which had been built by the Canadian National Railway and opened the year before.

"During the dinner ... Her Majesty was seated beside His Eminence Cardinal Léger," said Herbert as the CBC camera was fixed on the tiara-wearing Queen. "They carried on a very animated conversation during almost the entire meal."

The room was crowded with guests, many of whom were massed directly in front of the head table to get a prolonged look at Elizabeth.

"Now they are motioning the crowd to get back a bit more," said Herbert after going into considerable detail about the 14-room royal suite. "As soon as the crowd gets back ... the orchestra will begin playing."

Tribute to a president

A speech at the seaway

The next day, June 26, the Queen officially inaugurated the "great joint enterprise between our two countries" that was the St. Lawrence Seaway and welcomed U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower to Canada.

"The president of the United States will always be welcome here. But today there is an added pleasure and special warmth in our greeting," she said.

The speech went on to recognize Eisenhower's role in the Second World War as "one of the great military leaders who brought the free world through the most severe crisis of modern times."

Following the speech, the royal couple were shown boarding the Britannia along with Eisenhower, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker and their wives for a voyage on the Seaway.

Following Ontario stops in Brockville, Kingston and Toronto, next on the itinerary was Ottawa for Dominion Day on July 1, where Elizabeth addressed the country outside Rideau Hall.

Two days later, after more Ontario towns, the royal couple boarded the Britannia again in Windsor and took a route through the Great Lakes north to Parry Sound, Ont.

On July 5, 1959, the CBC news program Newsmagazine  brought viewers the day's headlines, wrapping up by recapping the royals' movements.

"The Queen and Prince Philip are aboard the Chicago-bound royal yacht," said an unnamed newsreader. "Today was their first full day of rest since the tour began 16 days and some 2,000 handshakes ago."

Chicago, meanwhile, was planning "the loudest and most glittering welcome Chicagoans have ever given to any visitor."

The program showed viewers pictures of the royal couple in Parry Sound on July 4, which was part of a "hurried Muskoka tour" where they received a "warm" and "informal" welcome from vacationers, according to the newsreader.

The visitors had shaken a mayor's hand for "the sixth time in six hours," remarked the newsreader in voiceover.

"It was a tired Queen that bade goodbye to Eastern Canada," said the newsreader.

By that point, the tour wasn't even half over. The Queen and Prince Philip would go on to take in the Calgary Stampede and visit all seven remaining provinces plus both territories, leaving from Halifax by air on Aug. 1.

A special royal tour issue of the Globe and Mail published three days later sold out.

Six days after their return to London, the Queen and Prince Philip announced they were expecting their third child. The Queen had learned she was pregnant with Prince Andrew during the visit. Diefenbaker was told, but not the public.

The Royal Visit to Victoria

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the steps of the Legislature Building

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the steps of the Legislature Building – May 30, 1939

With all the talk of newborn royalty we thought you might like to take a walk down memory lane to the last time we had a royal George – this King embarked on a truly historic trip to Canada.  In this pre-jet age, any Canadian with access to a train platform was very likely to be found there as the royal train rolled to a stop across Canada giving many a glimpse of their King and Queen.

On May 30, 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth visited Victoria on the last leg of their cross-Canada tour, as “King and Queen of Canada”.  The trip began May 17th, and it promised strategic advantages for Britain in the coming World War (one of the main reasons for the royal visit was to stimulate Canadian affection and support for Britain in the coming conflict).  They toured all the provinces, plus the Dominion of Newfoundland, which didn’t join Confederation until 1949.

It was the first time a reigning monarch had been to Canada, although as Prince Albert, and as the Duke of York, George had visited on his own before this.

The photo above shows King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on the steps of the BC Legislature Building (a two minute paddle from our dock).  The Prime Minister of Canada at the time was William Lyon Mackenzie King, and the BC Premier was T. D. Patullo.  For Mackenzie King, it was one of the momentous events of his life and he chronicled the tour in his personal diary.  As Prime Minister, he traveled with the royal visitors for their entire tour, across Canada and back as well as to the United States.

In Victoria a motorcade took the King and Queen through the crowds to Victoria’s Beacon Hill Park, where the Blessing of the Regimental Regalia took place, after the troops were inspected.  The next day, the royal visitors boarded the S.S. Prince Robert, and the trip continued to the United States from June 7th to 10th,  They visited the World’s Fair in New York, and stayed with President and Mrs. Roosevelt at the White House.  This was the first time a British king had been to the U.S.A.  The tour of North America ended on June 15th.  War with Nazi Germany was declared in September 1939.

The Queen's 1959 Royal Tour of Canada

The Queen's 1959 Royal Tour of Canada

In the summer of 1959, The Queen and Prince Philip took the longest royal tour in Canadian history, which included 17 military parades, 21 formal dinners, 64 guards of honour and 381 platform appearances. During the forty-five day tour, The Queen visited all ten provinces, four of the great lakes, both territories, and briefly detoured to the United States. Shortly after her return to England, the Queen revealed that she was pregnant with her third child and had sworn everyone on the tour to absolute secrecy. Canadian royal tours have been taking place since 1786, when Prince William, who was to become William IV, first visited the country. The Queen herself had already been to Canada in 1951, as Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, standing in for her father who was too ill to travel. The Queen last visited Canada in 2010.

The 1939 Royal Tour: Visiting BC

The politics of the 1939 royal tour.

George VI understood that with war approaching the support of both Canada and the United States of America would be crucial.  It was with this in mind that the 1939 Royal Tour became one of the most carefully orchestrated Royal Tours in history. Even the cars used were custom-built to create maximum visual impact.  Note the emphasis on alliance with the joined flags in the officially approved memorabilia.  George VI was the first British King to tour Canada and the United States of America.

Visiting British Columbia

Highlights of the 1939 Royal Tour in British Columbia included travel by Royal Train, an engine type ever after called the Royal Hudson.  On May 29th they left Banff, stopping briefly at Kamloops and then entered Vancouver, where large enthusiastic crowds greeted them.  The King and Queen boarded the Princess Margueritefor Victoria, where they opened the Legislature, lunched at the Empress and presented Colours to the Royal Canadian Navy in Beaconhill Park before returning across western Canada to New York State.

Princess Anne gives sailboat a royal sendoff from yacht club

Princess Anne visits the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, where she presented prizes at the Spring Dinghies Regatta in Oak Bay on Sunday, May 5, 2024. ADRIAN LAM, TIMES COLONIST

Even though he was about to set off on an 18-month sailing trip, Bill Norrie dressed up in a suit on Sunday.

He was standing with his wife, Cathy, in their sailboat, which was moored at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, where Princess Anne was set to present prizes at the Spring Dinghies Regatta.

He hoped the princess would give him the honour of a royal send-off.

He got his wish.

After touring the Canadian Navy’s Osprey sail training vessel, Princess Anne and her entourage stopped for a brief chat with the couple.

Upon learning of Norrie’s plans to head off to New Zealand, the princess joked: “You’re looking too tidy for that.”

Sir Tim Laurence, Princess Anne’s husband, untied the boat from the dock, and the princess gave the 28-foot-long Pixie a push before strolling back toward land to hand out the regatta prizes.

The club’s vice-commodore, Dale Gann, said Princess Anne was interested in the club’s youth sailing program and knowledgeable about local sailing conditions.

“She was very attuned to the weather and the difficulty that was on the water for some of the young sailors today,” Gann said. “It’s so nice to walk and talk to her about the youth.”

Adair Nadeau, who gave the princess flowers while she was on the dock, was enchanted by the royal visit.

“I’ve never seen a real-life princess,” the 12-year-old said with a smile.

Earlier in the day, Princess Anne unveiled a plaque honouring her late mother, Queen Elizabeth, and saluted Canadian veterans and current Armed Forces members during separate ceremonies in Victoria.

She planted a red flowering currant tree and unveiled the plaque at Government House, where she walked around the gardens, said Patty Grant, president of the Friends of Government House Garden. “It was lovely. She is so personable and showed an interest in each and every one of the volunteers.”

Princess Anne was especially interested in the Garry oak woodlands area and took photos, said Valerie Murray, Government House’s horticultural adviser. “The camas is looking fantastic right now and we were able to talk about the unique Garry oak ecosystem.”

Murray said the princess was shown a new pathway developed in honour of her brother, King Charles.

The princess also laid a wreath during a ceremony at the B.C. legislature cenotaph to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic, the largest and longest battle of the Second World War, during which Canada lost 24 warships and more than 4,300 Canadian forces and merchant marine members.

About 600 people attended the Battle of Atlantic ceremony, B.C. legislature security staff estimated.

Princess Anne’s royal visit started Friday in North Vancouver, where she participated in the commissioning of HMCS Max Bernays, the first Arctic patrol vessel for Canada’s Pacific fleet.

The princess, honorary commodore-in-chief of the Pacific fleet, sailed on board HMCS Max Bernays to Esquimalt . She then visited God’s Acre veterans cemetery and an urban agricultural sustainable food project.

Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee, commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, said having the princess attend the Battle of the Atlantic ceremony and sail on board a patrol vessel was an honour for Canada’s navy.

“It does make it extra special for the sailors of the Canadian Pacific fleet,” he said. “She is the honorary commodore-in-chief of the Pacific fleet, and for her to have a chance to come out and meet the sailors, sail on board HMCS Max Bernays and to be here to commission [the vessel] is a big moment for us. She cares deeply about her royal duties and the sailors in the Royal Canadian Navy.”

HMCS Max Bernays is the first new ship commissioned on the West Coast for Arctic and offshore patrols based in Victoria, Topshee said.

“It’s a great new capability for Canada and it guarantees that we can ensure our Arctic sovereignty,” he said.

Princess Anne’s final visit of the day was at the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Association in Central Saanich.

Forgoing a pavilion that had been set aside for her visit, the princess watched riding demonstrations from the side of the gate.

While she was there, the accomplished equestrian, who competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics, chatted with members of the riding association.

The princess headed back to London on Sunday night.

Royal Tours of Canada

Article by Carolyn Harris

There have been royal tours of British North America , then Canada, since the late 18th century. Early tours focused on the relationship between the monarchy and the military , while later tours included diplomacy, philanthropy, and the Crown ’s relationship with Indigenous peoples .

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

Early Royal Tours

In the 18th century, two of King George III’s sons visited British North America during their respective naval and military careers. Prince William, the Duke of Clarence (the future King William IV), visited Newfoundland as captain of the HMS Pegasus in 1786. Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent ( Queen Victoria ’s father), was posted to Halifax and Quebec City and toured what is now Ontario in the 1790s. He was named commander-in-chief of the British North American forces in May 1799 but left the following year due to ill health. The Duke of Kent was the first public figure to describe both English and French Canadians as “all his Britannic Majesty’s Canadian subjects.” Prince Edward Island is named in his honour.

Prime Minister John A. Macdonald invited Queen Victoria to open Canada’s first post- Confederation parliament on 1 July 1867. However, she declined and never visited Canada in person. Her son, the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII), and her grandson, the Duke of Cornwall and York (the future King George V), made high-profile tours of Canada in 1860 and 1901, respectively. These tours were organized to acknowledge Canadian contributions to the Crimean War (1853–56) and the Second Boer War (1899–1902). They also provided a framework for future tours, including speeches, meetings with First Nations representatives, visits to prominent Canadian sites, gift exchanges and philanthropy. The presence of the Duchess of Cornwall of York (the future Queen Mary) on the 1901 tour led to greater recognition for Canadian women’s organizations and more social events with both men and women.

Resident Royalty

In addition to tours, royalty have lived in Canada for extended periods of time. Queen Victoria ’s son-in-law, Lord Lorne , and daughter, Princess Louise Caroline Alberta , lived at Rideau Hall for long periods during Lorne’s term as governor general (1878–83) and made the first royal tour of British Columbia in 1882. Queen Victoria’s third son, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught , served as governor general from 1911 to 1916 and lived in Ottawa with his wife Margaret, Duchess of Connaught . His daughter, Princess Patricia , became honorary colonel-in-chief of Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry Regiment during the First World War . Patricia’s cousin, Princess Alice of Albany, Countess of Athlone , was vice regal consort from 1940 to 1946, while her husband, the Earl of Athlone , was governor general. Royal tours by the Connaughts and the Athlones focused on the military, wartime charities and preparations for war.

King Edward VIII

As Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII first visited Canada in 1919 to acknowledge Canadian contributions to the First World War . During the 1919 tour, Edward purchased a ranch in Alberta , which he kept after his abdication as king in 1936 and did not sell until 1962. Edward made official visits to Canada and private visits to his ranch in the 1920s and 1930s, achieving celebrity status. The prince, his Canadian tours and his ranch are mentioned in novels by Canadian authors, including Robertson Davies , Lucy Maud Montgomery and Timothy Findley . Edward was the first member of the royal family to describe himself as a Canadian on his tours of Canada. In a 1919 speech in Calgary , he stated, “I came to Canada as a Canadian in mind and spirit.”

The 1939 Royal Tour

King George VI was the first reigning monarch to tour Canada. In 1939 , he and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) , travelled across the country by train and made a four-day visit to the United States. It was one of the most popular royal tours in Canadian history and reinforced critical Anglo-Canadian and Anglo-American relations on the eve of the  Second World War .

Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II is the most traveled monarch in history and has visited Canada on more than 22 occasions, including the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway in 1959, Canada’s Centennial and Expo 67 in 1967, the Montreal Olympics in 1976, and the patriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982. During these tours, she has acted in her official capacity as Queen of Canada, opening Parliament for the first time in 1957 and delivering the Speech from the Throne in 1977. The Queen’s most recent visit to Canada was in 2010, when she and the Duke of Edinburgh celebrated Canada Day on Parliament Hill. At a 2010 official dinner at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto , Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered a hockey -themed speech that praised the Queen as Canada’s “Most Valuable Player.”

Modern Royal Tours

Since the mid-1990s, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh , the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall ( Charles and Camilla ), and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ( William and Catherine ) have made official visits to Canada, where they are formally invited and received by the prime minister . Other members of the royal family make working or private visits organized at the provincial level with their charities and military patronages in Canada. Recent official visits include Charles and Camilla’s visit to Nunavut , Ontario and the National Capital Region to mark the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation in 2017, William and Catherine’s 2011 tour of Ontario, Quebec , Prince Edward Island , the Northwest Territories and Alberta (their first overseas tour as a married couple) and their 2016 tour of British Columbia and the Yukon with their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Recent working visits include Prince Harry ’s visit to Toronto in 2017 in his capacity as patron of Invictus Games (his first public appearance with his future wife, Meghan ). Sophie, Countess of Wessex (now Duchess of Edinburgh), visited Toronto in 2019, touring hospitals where she is patron and promoting a new initiative to support women in financial careers. Royal tours were suspended temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020.
