Write a new entry in your travel diary and join us on one of the world's northernmost Glacier Safaris The cruise includes a warm meal, a unique chance to experience a possibly calving glacier and Arctic wildlife, maybe even a Polar Bear, the real King of the Arctic or Walrus.

Fjord-cruise to glaciers along the northern coastline of “Isfjorden.” Birds, seals and the start of Svalbards coalmining history at "Bohemanflya" are some of the things we might see on our way. Depending on the weather we explore our way towards the northern coastline and glacier fronts such as Nansen-, Bore-, Wahlenberg- or Svea Glaciers, closing up on one of them.

This is a unique opportunity to possibly encounter a glacier with massive pieces of ice breaking off from the glacier front. With vast opportunities to experience the arctic wildlife, keep your eyes open and look for whales, seals and a plethora of birds. And if we are lucky, a Polar Bear might be roaming around in these glacial habitats, or a massive walrus may be lazing on the shore… Our guide/storyteller will talk about the history of Longyearbyen, glaciers, arctic wildlife, and possibly also a “polar tall tale” or two… A warm meal is served in a refreshing glacial atmosphere. Baked salmon and marinated pork rib is on the menu. Served with a pasta salad, rice and bread. (A vegetarian option is available at the time of reservation, for an additional fee.)

If weather and ice-conditions allow, we’ll slow down and take in the beauty of the scenery at selected locations to savor precious moments for your travel diary.

Easy 1-Hour Boat Ride to Hesteyri from Isafjordur in the Westfjords

hesteyri & glacier fjord cruise

Description

Embark on an easy and convenient trip in the Westfjords of Iceland by booking this one-hour boat ride to Hesteyri from Isafjordur. Travelers who want to explore the awe-inspiring diversity of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve should book a spot on this boat tour today.

Your one-way boat tour to Hesteyri starts at Isafjordur, the capital of the Westfjords of Iceland. Isafjordur lies on the beautiful Isafjardardjup, a fjord connected to the seas surrounding Hesteyri. This connection makes Isafjordur town the best place to reach the abandoned village of Hesteyri.

If you’re coming from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, you can reach Isafjordur by air or land. The flight to Isafjordur from Reykjavik takes about 45 minutes, while land travel covers nearly six hours, traversing 280 miles (450 kilometers) of the route.

Once in Isafjordur, you may head to the Mjosund area of the town’s port. Make sure to arrive minutes before your departure time to avoid delays and problems.

From Isafjordur, you’ll journey into Hesteyri onboard a comfortable boat with spacious seats. Your boat can accommodate passengers anywhere between 30 to 48. It also features two engines to make your ride fast yet remain safe.

As you venture into the deep blue fjord of Isafjardardjup, a breathtaking sea view surrounded by mountains on the horizon welcomes you. If luck is on your side, you may spot curious marine animals like whales and dolphins roaming around the fertile waters.

Soon after, the boat arrives at your destination. Hesteyri is an abandoned coastal village that serves as a summer resort for locals. There are no permanent settlements in this area, so there are also no shops or restaurants to see here.

Hesteyri is the main gateway of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, located on its southwestern end. Most travelers to the nature reserve choose Hesteyri to jumpstart hiking and photography tours because it’s the closest to the towns and villages of the Westfjords.

Hesteyri and Hornstrandir offer the best spots for those longing to see a thriving natural environment. Flora and fauna of these areas continuously thrive due to the absence of human settlements and grazing animals.

Millions of birds nest in the nature reserve during the summer, from puffins to guillemots and fulmars. A great number of Arctic foxes also reside here with no larger predators to hunt them down.

The most popular activity in Hornstrandir is hiking through its beautiful trails and landscapes. This Icelandic nature reserve features hiking courses that pass through stunning cliffs, mountains, and bays swarming with vegetation.

This tour only includes a one-way boat ride to Hesteyri. You should book your return trip to Isafjordur separately and ahead of time. In addition, no guided excursions such as hiking and photography are included in this package.

See the unspoiled beauty of the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve by joining this one-hour boat tour to Hesteyri from Isafjordur in the Westfjords. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Visit the abandoned village of Hesteyri , reached only by a 70-minute boat ride .

The landscape in Jökulfirdir Fjord is very beautiful, with impressive, steep, snow-flecked mountains and quiet, secluded coves. In the late 1940s, all 80 inhabitants of Hesteyri village decided to move away. At the time, they were living without telephones, electricity or roads. By 1952, the village was completely abandoned.

Stroll through the village with your guide, enjoying traditional Icelandic refreshments at the old doctor's house. You will feel the distinctly eerie atmosphere of this unusual place where time seems to have stood still.

Renowned Icelandic crime and thriller author Yrsa Sigurðardóttir wrote a fantastic ghost story Ég Man Þig (I Remember You), whose plot takes place on Hesteyri Island. The story was recently made into a movie filmed on location here during the winter.

Due to Ísafjörður's remoteness and the scarcity of professional guides, all guiding is handled by locals; some are not professional, but all have great experience in guiding and extensive knowledge of the area. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion; outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Walking is required on gravel paths and uneven surfaces. You will transfer from the boat to a smaller inflatable boat to land at Hesteyri. Participants must be physically fit. There is a 200-yard walk from the ship to where the tour boat is docked. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair. The boats are not wheelchair accessible. Suitable for guests with mobility limitations with a companion to assist. The boats do not have restrooms. There is no guiding during the boat portion of the tour.
