Self-Guided Walking Tour of Belém

Belém is a riverside area, home to Lisbon’s finest monuments and museums, some of which, such as the peculiar Belém Tower or the impressive Jerónimos Monastery, are testimony of Portugal’s maritime history.

It was from Belém that the explorer Vasco da Gama set sail in 1497 to a pioneering sea voyage to India, rounding the Cape of Good Hope and reaching Calicut in 1498.

The Belém area is very compact, only about 5 square kilometres / 2 square miles, but there’s plenty to see and do. You can take half a day or easily spend a full day exploring the sights. Pick those that most interest you and see them in any order. Use our suggestions for eats and drinks.

Getting to Belém from central Lisbon is easy. Once there, use the map that we provide below. Two important details to remember when visiting Belém: (1) many monuments and museums in Lisbon close on Monday, and (2) there may be long queues to visit Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, especially during the summer peak season.

1. Belém Tower

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Start your walk on Lisbon’s most iconic monument – the small Belém Tower. If you take tram 15 to Belém, get off at Largo da Princesa – two stops after Mosteiro dos Jerónimos -, and walk 5 minutes towards the River Tejo. Try to go at high tide, when Belém Tower is at its best.

Built in the sixteenth century to guard the entrance to the harbour, Belém Tower is one of the city’s architectural wonders, and a UNESCO-listed monument. It was used as a State prison for several centuries, and today is a symbol of the Portuguese capital.

2. Popular Art Museum

From the tower, walk on the River Tejo’s edge towards Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), a caravel-shaped building. On your way, stop at the small Popular Art Museum, visit its main collection, or check if there are interesting temporary exhibitions.

3. Monument to the Discoveries

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Walk a few steps and soon you’ll be facing the 55 metre-high Monument to the Discoveries. From the top, get 360-degree panoramic views and admire the 50-metre diameter mosaic of a wind rose.

The monument was built in 1960 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, responsible for turning Portugal into the leading maritime nation in Europe in the fifteenth century.

4. CCB – Centro Cultural de Belém

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Walk across the road by an underground passageway to visit CCB, a large modern complex divided into three main spaces: the meeting centre, the concert hall and Berardo Museum (free on Saturday all day), with an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Browse this stunning collection and then relax in the cafés which offer great views of the surroundings.

5. Planetarium

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Just behind CCB, to the left of Jerónimos Monastery, is Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium. It will take you to distant galaxies. If you have kids, the one-hour experience is interesting as it explains the very basics of astronomy, although some may find it outdated technologically speaking (at least at the time of writing).

6. Navy Museum

Getting out of the Planetarium, Lisbon’s Navy Museum is to your left. Housed on the west wing of Jerónimos Monastery, this is the place to learn about the Portuguese maritime explorations through models of ships, naval uniforms and artefacts, including charts, maps and other navigation instruments. Check out the section devoted to the history of Portuguese fishery, including a room about the Newfoundland “Cod Campaigns” during the twentieth century.

7. Jerónimos Monastery

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Walk around the building, and finally admire Belém’s ex-libris , a UNESCO-listed monastery commissioned by King Dom Manuel I, the Portuguese monarch at the time of Vasco da Gama’s pioneering sea voyage to India. Pay attention to the monastery’s portals, especially the South Portal, with Our Lady of Belém with the Child and the statues of forty religious figures. Visit the Church of Santa Maria (free), and the cloister.

8. Tropical Botanical Garden

If you like tropical gardens or want to relax and get away from the crowds, it’s only €4 to go through this one. Find it to your right when you’re facing Jerónimos Monastery. The garden displays about 600 varieties of plants, mostly tropical and subtropical species. There is a small café on site.

9. Pastéis de Belém

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Walk back to the crowds on Rua de Belém, and sample the original pastel de nata , the famous custard tart at Pastéis de Belém. The place sells over 20,000 of these tarts daily. Order one, or a box of six, either at the counter or seated in the back room (if you are lucky enough to get an empty table). Usually sprinkled with canela (cinnamon), the tart is often accompanied with a bica , a strong espresso coffee.

10. Coach Museum

Continue walking on Rua de Belém till you reach the Coach Museum, a minimalist building that has one of the world’s largest collections of beautifully painted carriages dating from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Visit inside before your next and final stop in this walking tour.

hotel tour belem lisbonne

Go across the footbridge that goes over the railway tracks. Turn left and walk a few minutes on the River Tejo’s edge. You should soon reach MAAT (the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) and Tejo Power Station. The area is beautiful to take photos, offering views of the 25 de Abril suspension bridge and across the river.

MAAT deals with contemporary art. There’s an exhibition space underneath the undulating pedestrian roof from where visitors can enjoy panoramic views.

Next door, Tejo Power Station is one of Portugal’s most prominent examples of industrial architecture from the beginning of the twentieth century. In the basement of the old power station, there’s another museum telling the history of the plant through furnaces, boilers and electrical generating equipment, as well audio visual and interactive presentations.

Belem is actually one of Lisbon’s main districts and, hence, very much a part of the city.

However, it is almost 7 km away from Central Lisbon. That means if you are staying anywhere in Baixa-Chiado-Alfama, you can easily spend a day touring Belem from Lisbon . That makes it one of the fastest and easiest day trips from Lisbon .

There are so many fascinating monuments and museums in this UNESCO neighborhood of Lisbon that you can easily spend one busy day in Belem. Let’s see how to get there first.

Lisbon to Belem by tram

This is by far the most popular way of traveling to Belem district from Lisbon.

Take Tram 15E (same as Tram 15) going towards Alges Jardim from Praça da Figueira right next to Rossio Square. Get down at Mosteiro Jerónimos for the monastery. Or go a little ahead to Largo da Princesa, which is closer to Belem Tower.

Tram #15 is sleek and new and goes by the riverside all the way to Belem. The journey takes around 30 minutes and is free with the Lisboa Card .

Get a print of the route and timetable of Tram 15E here.

Stunning Manueline architecture in Belem

Lisbon to Belem by train

If you wish to ride the train, take the Lisbon—Cascais train from the Cais do Sodre Station. Get off the train at Belem. The journey takes only 7 minutes, and trains are quite frequent (every 20-30 minutes).

Tickets from Cais do Sodre to Belem cost €1.35. Again, you can ride for free with the Lisboa Card .

Book your train tickets online or check for train schedules on the official website of Comboios de Portugal.

Lisbon to Belem by Bus

You can also take a bus (or rather a couple of buses) to Belem from Central Lisbon . Check out Carris’s  website to plan the best bus route/schedule for yourself.

Honestly, it is much easier to take Tram 15E. There are no changes, and the tram provides multiple stops to get off in Belem.

Hop-on, Hop-off bus to Belem from Lisbon

Hop-on , hop-off buses are a popular way to see Lisbon. If you are in  Lisbon for a short two or three days , this is a good way to see  the major highlights, including the main attractions of Belem.

Lisbon to Belem on Bicycle

Isn’t it great that you can now travel all the way from Lisbon to Belem on bicycles and explore the city pollution-free, all while enjoying the cool breeze of the River Tagus?

Yes, that’s right. Get to Lisbon while pedaling through Lisbon’s riverside.

Bicycle tours usually last 3-4 hours and involve the participation of a knowledgeable local guide. Plus, the terrain is mostly flat and descending. Here’s a great Lisbon bike tour if you wish to have a look.

They also have segway tours, yet another exciting way to explore Belem .

The UNESCO neighborhood of Belem in Portugal

Taxi to Belem from Lisbon

You can always take a taxi from Central Lisbon to anywhere in Belem. It is the fastest and most comfortable way to get there, and the ride takes only 15 minutes.

You can either hail a taxi on the street or reserve an Uber. Cabs are not super expensive, making Lisbon one of the cheapest places to visit in Europe.

Here’s an extensive guide on Lisbon taxis that you can refer to.

Should you buy a Lisboa Card for Belem?

Absolutely, yes, if you are planning to visit the popular monuments in Belem and wish to use public transport to get there. You can ride for free on the tram, train, and Carris.

Lisboa Card comes in one, two, and three-day varieties, so you can choose according to your needs.

With the Lisboa Card, most of Belem’s sights, such as Jeronimos, Belem Tower, MAAT, Coaches Museum, and National Archaeological Museum, are free. Plus, there are significant discounts on others.

Click here to purchase your Lisboa Card online.

Best things to do in Belem

There are so many wonderful things to do in Belem that you can literally spend a couple of days here.

Here’s my choice of places and monuments to visit in Belem. If you are short on time, please feel free to pick and choose. Or refer to my  one-day Belem itinerary at the end of the post.

Explore Jeronimos Monastery

Facade of Jeronimos Monastery

If you have time to do just one thing in Belem, then it has to be a visit to the Jeronimos Monastery.

One of the important monuments of the Belem UNESCO ensemble, the Monastery of Hieronymites is one of the prettiest monasteries in Europe. I mean, look at all that gorgeous Manueline architecture—it’s too good to miss.

This is also where Vasco da Gama’s tomb lies. After all, Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most significant reminders of Portugal’s Age of Discoveries.

The church at Jeronimos is free to enter but has the longest queue. To visit the cloisters, you need to pay a fee of €10. Purchase your skip-the-line tickets here . Or just use your Lisboa Card and enter for free.

Visit Belem Tower

Belem Tower in Lisbon Portugal

Torre de Belem is the other important monument that is part of the Belem UNESCO heritage ensemble. Along with Jeronimos Monastery, it forms an unmissable part of any Lisbon itinerary .

Belem Tower was literally where the explorers left for their journeys. It served as a lighthouse, a customs port, and sometimes even a state prison. Even though it was built as a defense port for Lisbon and cannons were housed here, it played that role for a very short time. Purchase your Belem Tower skip-the-line tickets here .

Read our complete guide for Belem Tower to find more interesting facts about the monument.

Gorge on Pasteis de Belem

You cannot leave Belem without having tasted the original Pasteis de Nata. Can you?

Right by the side of Jeronimos Monastery is a small cafeteria called Pasteis de Belem. It serves hot and fresh Pasteis de Belem throughout the day. Fragrant with the smell of butter and cinnamon, this place is an absolute heaven for foodies.

Appreciate Portugal’s Monument of Discoveries

Monument to the Discoveries in Belem Portugal

The Monument of Discoveries is a fairly recent addition to the Belem skyline.

Built in 1960 to commemorate Portugal’s golden period of naval discovery, this monument is a tall, white structure that stands facing River Tagus. On top of it stand 33 great Portuguese explorers led by Prince Henry, The Navigator.

This is a nice place to take pictures. Lisbon’s 25th April Bridge is also visible from here. Most people just take photos from the outside and leave.

However, if you decide to go up to the terrace, then let me tell you that you will find one of the best viewpoints in Lisbon here. Splendid views of the Belem district as well as of the marina add an extra wow to your Lisbon trip .

Visit one of Belem’s finest museums

One of the most interesting facts about Lisbon is that it is filled with museums of various kinds. The neighborhood of Belem has some of the finest ones. They cover art, archaeology, design, the history of coaches and carriages, and more.

Here are some good museums in Belem that you might want to look at.

National Archaeological Museum

The Archaeological Museum is located right next to the Jeronimos Monastery in the same monastery complex.

This museum has one of the most impressive collections of historical artifacts in Portugal. Its Egyptian and Islamic Sections are especially well curated.

National Coach Museum

Opulent coaches at the Coach Museum in Belem Portugal

This is an interesting museum a little further away from the monastery. In fact, it is one of Lisbon’s hidden gems because hardly any tourist guide talks about it.

The Coaches Museum has an extensive collection of ornate carriages, most of which were used by the Portuguese nobility. Some were gifts to state guests. There are also a couple of child coaches.

It is interesting to walk through the aisles of this unique museum in Belem and imagine the wealth and riches that the elite once enjoyed.

Belem Palace

Portuguese presidents live in Belem Palace, which has been their official residence since 1910. Portuguese kings also lived here, on and off. In fact, when the earthquake struck in 1755, King Jose I was inside the Belem Palace, which wasn’t damaged much.

The Presidency Museum is inside the palace every day except Mondays. If you are keen to learn more about Portugal’s modern political history, this place is for you.

The palace is also open to the public on Saturdays. Check out their official schedule before you plan your visit.

Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology, or MAAT, in short, is the best place in Lisbon to experience contemporary art.

Apart from the 4 exhibition rooms that showcase various creations by modern artists, thinkers, and architects, the museum’s building is a sight in itself. Sleek and futuristic, it gives off positive vibes about the future.

Enjoy a cruise on the Tagus

Last but not least, end your day in Belem with a sunset cruise on the Tagus. Most cruises depart from the Marina at Belem and take you through a wonderful ride of the Tagus and Lisbon’s waterfront.

With a welcome drink in one hand and the fleeting medieval skyline of Lisbon bathed by the last rays of the sun in the other, there can be no better way to end your day in the UNESCO neighborhood of Belem.

Click here to book your sunset cruise now.

The Best Hotels in Belém, Lisbon

Lisbon

Belém runs along the Tagus River, encompassing many seafood restaurants, stretches of garden and historic landmarks as it does. Belém is where many an historic Portuguese journey of discovery has set sail from, or returned to. In fact many would have seen the rather grand Belém Tower on the horizon and known they had made it back to Europe. It follows that a number of the best hotels in Belém benefit from excellent views of the river, but some have great views of the city too.

Many of the monuments built here commemorate one grand journey or another, or were funded with the riches bought back on these expeditions. Belém Tower, built in the early 16th century to ward off pirates and other attackers, and the Jeronimos Monastery are probably the area’s best known sights. But don’t miss the Ajuda Palace or the Coaches Museum either, both are wonderful places to learn about the wealth of Portugal’s royal family and their historic standing in Europe.

As well as historic sights, Belém is also where you’ll find one of Lisbon’s most historic purveyors of pastel de nata: the Antiga Confeitaria de Belém, a pastry shop with beautiful tiled rooms which has been opened since 1841.

We loved our stay and we’re so happy with the hotel. I had booked several hotels in busier areas but decided to stay at the Hyatt due to their suite sizes and traveling with kids. We’re thrilled with our amazing (and huge) suite. We stayed for 5 days and could have stayed longer. The hotel is beautiful & quiet which was nice with little kids. Breakfast was wonderful and the staff is so kind! Highly recommend this property!

Torre de Belém, Lisbon

The Belém Tower, located where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic

I t looks like a small fairytale castle rising from the river, but this tower was built in 1515 as a beacon and fortress to guard the entrance to Lisbon’s harbor. It also served as a prison, and as the departure point for many of the “voyages of discovery” that took Portugal’s navigators to previously uncharted territories. The discovery of Brazil, global trade, and the colonization of parts of Africa and Asia, gave the king an unprecedented wealth, so the monument was eventually embellished with motifs glorifying the age. Carved into the stone are twisted ropes, knots, crosses, and armillary spheres, plus a rhinoceros that inspired a famous drawing by Durer, which is now in London’s British Museum. Apparently an Indian king offered the beast to the Portuguese king in 1513, and upon its arrival in Lisbon it caused great curiosity and fascination all over Europe. Its depiction on this tower is the first Western representation of the then-exotic animal. On the façade there is also a sculpted St. Michael (whose image accompanied Vasco da Gama on his epic voyage to India in 1498), and a St. Vincent, who’s the patron saint of Lisbon.

Belém Tower, Lisbon

The intricately-sculpted loggias and balconies facing the river

The impressive stonework, the uniqueness of the architecture and the historical significance has made UNESCO list it as a World Heritage Site . It’s Lisbon’s most iconic landmark , and one that no tourist can miss. Only 150 people are allowed inside at a time, so there are usually long lines outside -- try to go early in the morning.

Belém Tower, Lisbon

The terrace that seems to float on the river

Once inside, visitors can admire the façade that faces the river, which features the most impressive stonework. That includes an image of Our Lady of Safe Homecoming, who was believed to protect sailors. Surrounding it are six turrets with small windows, where soldiers hid their guns and cannons. Below it is a small cloister with Gothic arches, whose original function was to ventilate the interior, releasing the smoke caused by the firing of the artillery. Past a series of cannons pointing out the window is a low-ceilinged dungeon, where political prisoners were held.

Belém Tower, Lisbon

Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) details on the terrace

Up the narrow, spiraling staircase are intricately-sculpted loggias, balconies and windows, and a room showing a video about the history of the tower. At the very top is a terrace with wonderful views of the Tagus estuary and the neighboring landmarks.

Torre de Belém, Lisbon

At high tide, the tower is surrounded by water.

How to Get to Belém Tower

The fastest way to get to Belém Tower from the center of Lisbon is taking the train that goes to Cascais, departing every 20 minutes from Cais do Sodré Station . It reaches Belém in just seven minutes, and from the station you may walk down the waterfront, past the Discoveries Monument to the tower. Bus 714 and tram 15 , both departing from Praça da Figueira downtown, also go to Belém, but they take much longer than the train. The tram is also more expensive and is usually too crowded and therefore uncomfortable. You may ride the train, the tram and the bus for free with the Lisboa Card .

To the east of the tower is the Discoveries Monument . To the west is the Champalimaud Center for the Unknown, whose terraces offer a view of the tower.

Where to Stay by the Belém Tower

Palácio do Governador Hotel, Lisbon

Palácio do Governador

Belém Tower had its own governor in the 16th century, and his residence is now a hotel. It’s found across the road, and it’s also something of a museum. It incorporates historical pieces found during the building’s renovation in the décor, including baroque tile panels and Roman artifacts. The rooms, by award-winning designer Nini Andrade Silva, also feature a contemporary design, and there’s a good restaurant and a spa. Best of all is the large outdoor swimming pool, with a view of the tower.

Altis Belém Hotel, Lisbon

Altis Belém

Located between the Discoveries Monument and Belém Tower, this waterfront hotel is as close to a beach resort as you’ll get in Lisbon, just before the seaside suburbs (which are just minutes away). The contemporary interior is inspired by the Age of Discovery, especially the Michelin-starred restaurant. There’s also a second, more informal restaurant with outdoor seating, and a bar to chill out by the river. The rooftop has a pool and spa, from where you can see the tower.

Belem Tower: history and construction

The tower was originally built by King John II. It was to be part of a defensive system at the mouth of the Tagus and the main gate of Lisbon.

At the end of the 15th century, John II developed a defensive system based on the fortresses of Cascais to the west of Belém and San Sebastián in Caparica on the south bank of the river. However, as these two buildings did not fully protect the river estuary, the king ordered the construction of a fort where the tower of Belem is located. The king died before construction could begin, so it was abandoned.

It was not until 20 years later that another Portuguese king, Manuel I, realised the strategic importance of the site and ordered the construction of a fortification in the Belem district. Construction began in 1515 with the chief architect Francisco de Arruda. The construction of the Belem Tower was completed in 1519, two years before the death of Manuel I.

The tower is named after Saint Vincent, considered the patron saint of Lisbon.

It is said that the tower was also built to commemorate the opening of the sea route to India by the Portuguese navigator Vasco Da Gama. Interestingly, during construction, the approach to the river mouth was protected by a heavily armed 1000 ton ship called the “Grande Nau”.

In 1580, the Belem Tower was used to defend the mouth from the Spanish. It was at this time and until 1830 that the tower’s dungeons became a prison. At the end of the 16th century, a two-storey building was built over the bastion, giving the tower the appearance it has today. There are sculptural crosses of the Order of Christ.

  • From 1633, the tower had a customs office to charge taxes to passing ships.
  • From 1780 to 1782, the Fort of Bom Sucesso was built nearby.
  • From 1808 to 1814, the French garrison was located here.
  • In 1865-67, a lighthouse was installed in the south-eastern part of the building.
  • In the 1990s the tower was handed over to the Portuguese Institute of Architectural Heritage.
  • The works for the complete renovation of the building were carried out from February 1997 to January 1998.
  • On 7 July 2007, the Tower of Belém was included in the list of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.

Torre de Belem: interior and exterior

The tower is made of Liozo limestone. The construction was carried out on a basalt rock near the northern shore of the river. The architectural ensemble of the fort can be divided into two parts: a bastion and a four-storey tower in its northern part.

The appearance of the Belem Tower is amazing. There is a sculpture of a rhinoceros in the northwestern part of the façade, on the right side. You will also see two other statues: Archangel Michael on the right and Saint Vincent on the left. On the fourth floor, the tower has a balcony with parapets decorated with merlon teeth and a bas-relief of the Cross of the Order of Christ. In the lower part, you can see the cannon holes. The Tower of Belém is accessible via a drawbridge. The main entrance has direct access to the interior of the bastion where the artillery is located. On the outer side of the lower bastion there are embrasures for 17 cannons in the walls.

canons tour of the belem tower lisbon

In the centre is a small open courtyard surrounded by Gothic arches. This structure was used to dissipate the smoke from the cannon fire.

The interior of the bastion, with a round staircase at the northern end, has two adjacent halls with vaulted ceilings. The interior space is divided into several levels.

The Governor’s Hall (Sala do Governador)

The name of this hall is probably related to the fact that in the 16th century the post of governor of the Tower of Belém was created. The first governor was Gaspar de Pive in 1521. The Governor was a representative of the monarch and exercised military, administrative and judicial powers.

The Governor’s room is located on the first floor of the tower. It is reached by a narrow staircase. Here you can find a tank in which rainwater was stored. The ceiling of this room is vaulted and covered with lime mortar. On the left, a spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower and to other rooms.

Royal Hall (Sala dos Reis)

The Royal Hall of the Belem Tower occupies the second floor of the tower. From this room there is an exit to the balcony on the south façade of the tower. In the northwest corner there is a stone fireplace.

Courtroom (Sala das Audiencias)

The courtroom occupies the third floor of the monument. This room also has a fireplace.

On the fourth floor you will find a vaulted chapel. There is an exit to the balcony. There are eight round holes in the floor of this balcony. Through these holes it was possible to repel attacks by throwing shells.

Belém Tower in Lisbon

Belém Tower was first built to defend Lisbon . Years later, it was transformed into a lighthouse and then a customs center.

The Belém Tower (Torre de Belém) was built between 1514 and 1520 in a Manuelino style by the Portuguese architect and sculptor Francisco de Arruda. It was classified as a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO.

Constructed on the northern bank of the Tagus River, this tower was used to defend the city . Years later, it was transformed into a lighthouse and customs house. It's located right by the  Jerónimos Monastery , so we recommend visiting them on the same day.

Inside Belém Tower

The ground floor of this architectural jewel has 16 windows with cannons . The visit also includes a tour of the pits and holes where the prisoners were thrown into.

The tower has five floors which lead to a roof terrace. Each story is connected by a small and narrow spiral staircase, which, on the busiest days is a little overwhelming, having to wait your turn to go up and down.

The floors are, from bottom to top: The Governor’s Hall, The Kings’ Hall, the Audience Hall, the Chapel, and the Roof terrace.

The rhinoceros gargoyle

On the western façade of the Tower of Belém, you’ll find a curious gargoyle in the shape of a rhinoceros. Interestingly, the first rhino to set foot in Portugal was in 1513 from India.

Altis Belem Hotel & Spa, a Member of Design Hotels 5 étoiles

L'hôtel de luxe 5 étoiles Altis Belem Hotel & Spa - Design Hotels bénéficie d'un emplacement unique au bord de l'eau, dans le quartier historique de Belém à Lisbonne, près du Tage. The experience at this hotel was beyond words. Excellent location since it was a 10 minute walk from the Belem Cultural Center where my conference took place. The room was large and very comfortable. It included a sitting area within the room. The window was very large and as a result the room had always light. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. That cleaning lady even folded my nightgown every day. The bed has huge, always well made with obviously clean and ironed sheets and a very comfortable mattress. The room was made early in the morning (instead of at 3 or 4 pm). The breakfast was excellent. A large variety of products, including very fresh fruit and everything else you may desire. The personnel was beyond words polite, warm and professional (but not in the cold meaning of the word). I am not sure what else to write. It was one of the few times (and I travel quite often) that I felt that this hotel, which was not cheap, was worth every penny!!!

Lisbon's Belém Tower: The Complete Guide

hotel tour belem lisbonne

TripSavvy / Gautier Houba

Adorning the cover of numerous postcards and guidebooks, a visit to Lisbon’s beautiful, UNESCO-listed Belém Tower features on almost every visitor’s itinerary. If you’d like to know more about visiting this 500-year-old structure, we’ve put together this comprehensive guide to the tower’s history, how and when to go, tips for buying tickets, what to expect once you're inside, and more.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Back in the 15 th century, the king and his military advisers realized Lisbon’s existing defensive forts at the mouth of the Tagus river didn’t provide enough protection from sea-based attack. Plans were drawn up in the early 1500s to add a new fortified tower on the northern bank of the river, a little further downstream where the Tagus was narrower and easier to defend.

A small island of volcanic rock just offshore in Belém was chosen as the ideal site. Construction started in 1514, and finished five years later, with the tower named Castelo de São Vicente de Belém (The Castle of Saint Vincent of Bethlehem). Throughout the next several decades, the structure went through a series of upgrades and additions to further strengthen its defensive capabilities.

Over the centuries, the tower ended up having other purposes beyond just defending the city from the sea. Troops were stationed in an adjoining barracks, and the dungeons of the tower were used as a prison for 250 years. It also served as a customs house, collecting duties from foreign ships until 1833.

The tower had fallen into disrepair by that time, but major conservation and restoration works didn’t begin until the mid-1900s. A significant European science and culture exhibition was held in the tower in 1983, which was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site the same year.

A year-long full restoration was finished in early 1998, leaving Belém Tower as it appears today. It was declared one of the “Seven Wonders of Portugal” in 2007.

How to Visit

At the southwestern edge of Lisbon’s official city limits, the popular neighborhood of Belém lies about five miles from downtown areas like Alfama .

Getting there is straightforward: trains, buses, and trams all run along the river from Cais do Sodre and other main stations, all costing under three euros for a single ticket. Ferries also run to Belém, but only from a couple of terminals on the southern bank of the river.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are also inexpensive, especially when traveling in a group, and it’s also a pleasant, flat walk along the waterfront under the striking April 25 bridge, with plenty of other attractions, bars, and restaurants along the way.

While Belém Tower was originally freestanding in the Tagus River, subsequent extensions of the nearby riverbank means it’s now only surrounded by water at high tide. Access to the tower is via a small bridge.

The tower opens to visitors from 10 am, closing at 5:30 pm from October through May, and at 6:30 pm the rest of the year. Oddly, last entry is at 5 pm, regardless of the closing time. When planning your visit, note the tower is closed every Monday, as well as New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, May Day (1 May), and Christmas Day.

You can still take photos of the striking exterior when the tower isn’t open, of course, but you won’t be able to get inside. Head around to the right of the tower for the best photos, away from the line and busy pedestrian area. Sunset is a particularly good time for shots of the tower, framed against the river and orange sky.

Due to its popularity and relatively small size, the site gets very busy in summer, especially from late morning to mid-afternoon, when many of the tour buses and groups show up. For a more relaxed experience, it's worth arriving early, or towards the end of the day. Lines often start forming half an hour before opening time, and as people are only allowed in and out in groups, it can be slow-moving. Expect to spend around 45 minutes inside.

Inside the Tower

For most visitors, the highlight of Belém Tower is the open terrace at the top—but don’t try to rush through the rest of the structure just to get there. A single narrow, steep staircase provides access to all floors, including the roof, and it can get quite crowded. A red/green traffic light system controls whether people can ascend or descend at a given moment, and the wait provides an excuse to explore each floor on the way up or down.

The ground floor once housed the tower’s artillery, with cannons aimed out across the river through the narrow window openings. Several of those large guns remain in place today. Below them (and therefore below the waterline) lies the magazine, originally used for storing gunpowder and other military equipment, and then transformed into a dark, damp prison in later centuries.

Above that sits the Governor’s Chamber, where nine successive governors worked for over three centuries. Little remains in the chamber now, but it’s worth squeezing your way through the narrow tunnels at either end to get to the attached turrets. From one of them, you can see a small stone sculpture of a rhinoceros head, apparently created to commemorate the arrival of one of the first rhinos in Europe, as a gift for King Manuel 1 in 1514.

Climb up once more to enter the King’s Chamber. The room itself is relatively unexciting, but it provides access to a Renaissance-style balcony with great views over the lower terrace and river. Above that lie the Audience Chamber on the third floor, and on the fourth floor, the former chapel which has been converted into a small theater showing a video history of the tower and Portuguese Age of Discovery.

Finally reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping view over the ramparts of the waterfront, river, and surrounding neighborhood. The April 25 bridge and statue of Christ the Redeemer on the opposite bank are both clearly visible, and it’s the perfect spot to snap a few iconic Lisbon photos.

Buying Tickets

A single adult ticket costs six euros, with a 50% discount for visitors 65+ years old, those in possession of a student or youth card, and families of two adults and two or more children under 18 years old. Children under the age of 12 are admitted free.

It’s also possible to buy a combined ticket that gives access to Belém Tower, and the nearby Jerónimos Monastery and National Archaeology Museum, for €12.

One important tip: during busy periods, it’s well worth buying your ticket before arriving at the tower. It can be purchased from the nearby tourist information office, or as part of the combination pass mentioned above. The often-lengthy line for tickets at the tower itself is separate to the entrance line, and can be skipped entirely if you already have one.

Note that even if you have free access via a Lisbon pass , you still need to pick up a ticket—the pass itself won’t get you inside the tower.

When You’re Finished

Given its location, it makes sense to combine a visit to Belém Tower with other nearby attractions. The majestic Jerónimos Monastery is only a 10-15 minute walk away, and as mentioned, combination tickets to both attractions are available at a discounted price.

Close to the monastery sits the Pastéis de Belém bakery, the original home of Portugal’s famous pastel de nata egg tart—after climbing up and down those 200+ stairs, a little treat is definitely in order! There may be a long line there as well, but it's very much worth the wait.

Finally, for something a little less historic, but no less interesting, walk back along the waterfront to MAAT (the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology). Housed in a former power station, and only opened in 2016, you’ll pay €5-9 to go inside—or, if you haven’t got your fill of photogenic spots quite yet, just head up top to the viewing area for free.
