Whether you’re looking forward to ski season or aiming to escape to someplace warm to kick off 2024, we have ideas for you. Those seeking sunshine might travel to Panama, the Maldives, or the Caribbean, while snow sports fans can find their fun in Vail or Switzerland. Travelers who appreciate off-season deals might consider Monaco or Savannah, Georgia, and for more stateside history and beauty, consider a trip to Alabama.

Wherever your January takes you, we hope it will be the beginning of a year of travel to new destinations and favorite places. Here are 10 of the best places to travel in January in the United States and around the world.

Stephen Poff/Alabama Tourism

The birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement , Alabama is an inspiring destination during the month of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. In Montgomery, visitors can experience landmarks like Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Dr. King preached his message, as well as the Legacy Museum, the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Civil Rights Memorial designed by Maya Lin. Stay in Montgomery, and if time allows, head south to Alabama’s beaches , where it’s pleasant to be outside even in the winter months. The Gulf Shores area is located along the Mississippi Flyway migration route, and birdwatchers flock to the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail to spot species they rarely see.

Where to Stay: Stay at the conveniently located luxury boutique Trilogy Autograph Collection Hotel in Montgomery.

Vail, Colorado

Ski season is prime time to visit Colorado, and Vail is a great spot to hit the slopes. The quaint town is modeled after a Bavarian village, with pedestrian streets, world-class restaurants, shops, cafés, and luxury hotels. Vail is perfect for skiers who visit for its nearly 200 trails and for non-skiers who enjoy apré-ski activities without ever going out in the snow. Vail’s public art collection includes paintings, sculptures, and murals, ideal for a pleasant stroll through town. After a long day on the slopes, we recommend checking into one of the luxe spas at the many high-end hotels. You can fly into Denver and drive about two hours to Vail, or take a flight into the nearby Eagle County Regional Airport .

Where to Stay: Top places to stay in Vail include Grand Hyatt Vail , The Arrabelle , The Lodge at Vail , Antlers at Vail , The Sebastian-Vail .

Temecula, California

About 90 miles south of Los Angeles and 60 miles from San Diego, Temecula Valley is a popular Southern California wine destination with nearly 50 award-winning wineries. Hot air ballooning, hiking, horseback riding, and golf are great local activities. You can also go wine tasting or visit area breweries and distilleries. Old Town Temecula has a historic feel and a community theater that hosts comedy shows, tribute bands, jazz concerts, and more.

Where to Stay: Hotels, vacation rentals , and Pechanga Resort & Casino are among places to stay. For a particularly unique experience, stay at Europa Village , where you can enjoy the atmosphere of Spain, France, or Italy without dusting off your passport. Accommodation options here include casitas and suites with easy access to wine tasting.

Savannah, Georgia

Take advantage of off-season prices by booking a getaway to Savannah in January. Crowds at city attractions will likely be thin — this is usually Savannah’s coldest month, though temperatures rarely fall below 40 degrees and often reach the 60s. And there are plenty of things to do in Savannah , from museum visits to meals at popular dining spots. Explore the riverfront, browse unique shops, and find a place that serves fresh seafood.

Where to Stay: If you’d like to stay along the river, consider the sophisticated Thompson Savannah , set in the Eastern Wharf district. Or choose Perry Lane Hotel in the heart of historic downtown Savannah. For a unique Savannah experience, visit Cohen’s Retreat , set in a restored century-old building that now features a restaurant, bar, live music nights, and a boutique that showcases the work of local artists. You can even stay nearby at one of their cottages.

Summer crowds are gone, and while temperatures in the 50s likely mean no swimming or sunbathing, there’s still much to enjoy in Monaco during this time of year. In addition to exploring Old Town, where you will see the 13th-century Prince’s Palace of Monaco and the Baroque 17th-century Museum of the Chapel of the Visitation, you can shop and stroll in Monte Carlo, on the same streets where Formula One cars speed during the famed Monaco Grand Prix. From Jan. 19-28, the 46th Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo comes to Monaco with thousands of international circus acts. A range of hotels offer attractive prices in the off-season, too.

Where to Stay: Consider a luxe stay at Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo , Hôtel Hermitage Monte-Carlo , or Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo , all part of The Leading Hotels of the World .

The Maldives

January weather is dry and warm in this nation of more than a thousand islands, about 200 of which are inhabited. Clear seas, coral formations, and marine life make it a favorite destination for divers and snorkelers, and the destination’s overwater bungalows and remote location make it a honeymoon haven. No matter your reason for visiting, you’ll want to experience the beaches and beautiful scenery. Many resorts cater to families, groups, and solo travelers.

Where to Stay: Places to stay include all-inclusive resorts, budget-friendly hotels, guesthouses, and liveaboards. For a wellness-focused visit, consider Joali Being or Velaa Private Island with its Wellbeing Village. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru , Dhawa Ihuru , and The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands offer kids’ activities, making them great for families.

Galápagos Islands, Ecuador

Didier Marti/Getty Images

This volcanic archipelago is known for its fascinating wildlife, including many species unique to the islands. January is an ideal time to see land birds nesting and sea turtles laying their eggs on the beaches. The seas are relatively calm in January, and comfortable water temperatures allow for swimming, though there may be some rain as the wet season begins. Most visitors tour the islands via cruise ; operators include Hurtigruten Expeditions , Ecoventura , and Integrity Luxury Yacht , among other cruise lines.

Where to Stay: Another option is to stay on land at Pikaia Lodge, Relais & Châteaux , located on Santa Cruz Island. The luxury property features both land tours and yacht day cruises, so guests enjoy the comfort of the lodge with opportunities for hiking, diving, fishing, and wildlife spotting.

Warm and dry in January, with average temperatures in the high 80s (except in the highlands, where the weather is cooler), Panama is a great destination this time of year. Thanks to the country’s varied landscapes, you can take your pick from cities, deserts, rainforests, islands, and beaches on the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Wildlife enthusiasts might visit Panama’s national parks, while others may want to learn about the Panama Canal — a feat of engineering — with a trip to Miraflores Visitors Center, just outside of Panama City. Music fans may want to time their trip for the annual mid-January Panama Jazz Festival . You’ll also have the chance to enjoy some of the world’s best coffee when you visit Panama.

Where to Stay: If you’re staying in Panama City, consider The Santa Maria , where the 2024 Latin American Amateur Golf Championships will be held in January, or Hotel La Compañia , formerly a 17th-century convent and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s also Buenaventura Resort in beachside Riviera Pacifica and Isla Palenque , a resort set on a private island.

Turks and Caicos

Matt Anderson Photography/Getty Images

Turks and Caicos is made up of two island groups with eight major islands; most people stay on Providenciales, the most inhabited island. Providenciales offers stunning beaches, resorts, and vacation villas, plus Providenciales International Airport, ideal for those arriving by air. (Cruise passengers typically arrive at Grand Turk Cruise Center ). You can spend your days lounging on the beaches, fishing, boating, and windsurfing, or go beyond the shores to hike through nature reserves and spot local wildlife. End sun-soaked days with a visit to local bars to enjoy the destination’s music scene and nightlife.

Where to Stay: Beachfront escapes abound in Turks and Caicos. On beautiful Grace Bay Beach, stay at The Palms , The Somerset , or Grace Bay Club , or choose from boutique properties like Rock House , Wymara Resort & Villas , or The Shore Club .

Switzerland

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

Ski season is underway in Switzerland come January, so winter sports fans will find plenty to do. Epic Pass holders can ski Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis , where they’ll find a traditional mountain village, deep powder, and steep slopes. Or, experience the Alps without skis by booking an excursion on Jungfrau Railways that ends at the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 11,332 feet. A thrilling ride on the 10-passenger aerial gondola from the mountain resort town of Grindelwald offers another way to take in the snowy scenery. And in Bern, Switzerland’s historic capital, you can explore the Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site founded in the 12th century.

Where to Stay: Stay near Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis at The Chedi Andermatt for a luxury experience with a relaxing spa, indoor pool, and heated outdoor pool. Ski at Zermatt and enjoy Matterhorn views with a stay at Mont Cervin Palace or Hotel Schweizerhof . In Bern, stay at Hotel Schweizerhof Bern & Spa for its luxe spa and classic atmosphere.

The best US travel deals for January

Caroline Tanner

Though much of our focus recently has been on securing the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel deals , the deals don't stop in the new year. In fact, January is a prime time for budget-conscious travelers to continue saving money.

From New York City to Napa Valley (and many destinations in between), there are many places across America that you can visit on a budget when the first month of the year rolls around.

Here's how to save even more money when traveling in January.

New York City: Hotel Week

Although it seems like New York City is always expensive, NYC Hotel Week offers travelers the chance to save up to 23% at more than 140 properties across the five boroughs for stays between Jan. 3 and Feb. 12.

The discount is for standard room rates at brands like Hyatt , Marriott and Hilton , among others.

For example, with the promotion, cash rates for a stay on Jan. 3 at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York in a standard room with a king-size bed start at $216 (excluding taxes and fees). The same room on that date would otherwise set you back $234 for the member rate, $247 for the World of Hyatt members advance purchase rate and $280 for the standard nonmember rate. So, you could save $64 by choosing this special promotion.

To take advantage of this promo, visit NYC & Company's official website . From there, you will be directly linked to special booking pages for each hotel where the promotional code should already be applied. If a code is not automatically entered, try using the code "HTLWK" to view Hotel Week prices.

If you end up visiting the city for Hotel Week, be sure to check out NYC & Company's other NYC Winter Outing offerings from Jan. 17 through Feb. 12. During this time, visitors and locals can get special reservations at the city's top restaurants during NYC Restaurant Week , two-for-one Broadway tickets during NYC Broadway Week and two-for-one tickets to popular attractions and museums during NYC Must-See Week .

The average domestic round-trip airfare for January 2023 is $230, but the average flight to New York City in January costs $190, according to data provided by the booking site Hopper.

Some of the airports with affordable round-trip flights to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in January include:

  • Nashville International Airport (BNA), starting at $77 on Spirit.
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), starting at $138 on JetBlue, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
  • O'Hare International Airport (ORD), starting at $148 on both United and Delta.

Other domestic cities: Chicago and Los Angeles

last minute travel deals january 2023

Though generally less expensive to visit than New York City, Chicago is also an option in winter; January is the cheapest month to fly to the Windy City. During January, flights drop an average of 33% in price, according to booking portal Kayak , which says to book at least two weeks before departure to score a flight priced below average.

The average round-trip flight to Chicago in January is $187, while the average hotel room costs $140 per night, per Hopper data.

Last month, we found flights from across the U.S. to Chicago at the start of the year for less than $200 round trip , including on United, American, Delta and Southwest. Those flights are still available at the same price.

For example, you can currently book round-trip flights to ORD from the following airports:

  • BOS and Bradley International Airport (BDL), starting at $118 on Delta and United.
  • Denver International Airport (DEN), starting at $68 on Frontier.
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), starting at $114 on American.

With your well-priced flight in hand, consider the below Chicago properties, which have starting rates at a little more than $100 per night:

  • Hyatt House Chicago / West Loop-Fulton Market, where rates start at $113 per night.
  • Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, where rates start at $127 per night.
  • The Drake (Hilton), where rates start at $131 per night.
  • Hyatt Regency Chicago, where rates start at $147 per night.
  • Swissotel Chicago (Accor), where rates start at $152 per night.
  • LondonHouse Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton, where rates start at $168 per night.
  • Hilton Chicago/Magnificent Mile Suites, where rates start at $168 per night.

If Chicago in the winter is too cold for you (frankly, there is a reason flights are cheap), consider Los Angeles ; flights to the City of Angels are nearly half off their normal price tag, according to Kayak . Those who prefer Northern California will find a slight drop in flights to San Francisco in January as well, Kayak reports .

Though the average round-trip flight to LA is slightly more expensive than to Chicago ($228), the average cost of a hotel room in LA in January is just $118 per night, per Hopper.

Escape the cold of Chicago for sunny LA with round-trip flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) starting at $158 in January on United and American. Or, fly from EWR to LAX for as little as $180 with Alaska, United or JetBlue.

Once you find a flight, know that there are many Hilton-affiliated properties in central LA for less than $200 per night throughout the month, including:

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles Downtown, where rates start at $180 per night.
  • The Wayfarer Downtown LA, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, where rates start at $191 per night.
  • Hilton Checkers Los Angeles, where rates start at $193 per night.

Two Hyatt properties are available at similar rates. Hotel Figueroa has rooms for as little as $141 per night, while Tommie Hollywood rooms are bookable starting at $185 per night.

Although IHG and Marriott properties are more expensive, you can still find good rates with these brands, too, including:

  • The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, Los Angeles (Marriott), where rates start at $203 per night.
  • Hotel Indigo Los Angeles Downtown (IHG), where rates start at $212 per night.
  • Sheraton Grand Los Angeles (Marriott), where rates start at $229 per night.
  • InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown (IHG), where rates start at $244 per night.

National parks and winter-themed activities

last minute travel deals january 2023

Not only can you usually get a reprieve from the usual national park crowds by visiting during the winter months, but you may also enjoy more comfortable conditions when visiting certain parks, such as those in desert settings that can see temperatures climb above 100 degrees in the summer.

Related: 10 of the best national parks to visit during winter

From Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Park in California to Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, there are several national parks in the U.S. that feature desert landscapes.

Because most national parks welcome fewer visitors when temperatures drop, you'll usually find flight deals.

For example, Kayak reports that January is the cheapest month to fly domestically to larger airports by Yellowstone National Park, including Casper-Natrona County International Airport (CPR), Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Billings-Logan International Airport (BIL). Oftentimes, these airports are less expensive to fly to than smaller regional airports closer to the parks.

Similarly, United currently has round-trip flights in January from EWR to Bangor International Airport (BGR) — the closest major airport to Maine's Acadia National Park — that start at $188.

Time your visit to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and you may even be able to enter for free: The holiday is one of five dates when entrance fees are waived . For 2023, the holiday falls on Jan. 16.

An added bonus to visiting in January is that there are winter-specific activities only available at certain parks during winter. For example, at Yellowstone, you can take a guided snowmobile tour. You can also go skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice climbing, ice skating and snow tubing at a number of parks, including Acadia, Yosemite National Park in California, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Olympic National Park in Washington.

Wine country in winter

last minute travel deals january 2023

Northern California's wine country — specifically Napa Valley — is also far less crowded and cheaper to visit in January, as the fall harvest season is over and temperatures have fallen.

Beyond saving money, you'll have the chance to enjoy some timely events specific to winter, including Napa Valley Restaurant Week , which takes place from Jan. 20-29 in 2023. You'll also find special deals from wineries, such as the Winter in the Wineries Passport , which allows visitors to taste and tour 16 wineries for only $75.

If you plan to stop in San Francisco as part of your Napa Valley visit, you can save some bucks along the way — hotels there often cost less than what you'll pay to stay in the Napa area . The following are just a few San Francisco hotels currently showing availability in January for less than $250 a night:

  • Hilton San Francisco Union Square, where rates start at $160 per night.
  • Parc 55 San Francisco — a Hilton Hotel, where rates start at $174 per night.
  • The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square (Marriott), where rates start at $201 per night.
  • Kimpton Hotel Enso (IHG), where rates start at $216 per night.
  • JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square, where rates start at $228 per night.
  • InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco (IHG), where rates start at $244 per night.

Related: Book this, not that: San Francisco hotels

Bottom line

The average hotel room in the U.S. costs $230 per night in January, according to Hopper, and it can be hard to find ways to cut expenses when you travel, even during historically slow seasons like winter. Fortunately, there are some domestic destinations that you can visit without breaking the bank.

To help you stick to a smaller budget, start your search with Google Flights to see if you can find a timely flight deal. Remember to look for limited-time offers for reduced rates at hotels, too, such as the annual NYC Hotel Week deal for properties throughout New York City.

How to find cheap flight deals with momondo

  • How does momondo find such cheap airfare? momondo searches across hundreds of airlines and travel sites, from major booking sites to individual company sites, to give you as many cheap airfare options as possible. When you conduct a single search on momondo, you can find and compare cheap airline tickets like you’ve done hundreds of searches at once. momondo is completely free to use - with no hidden charges or fees - and the prices you see are never affected by your searches, no matter how many you make. We believe in an open world, where traveling and getting acquainted across borders and cultures is available to us all, so we’re committed to showing you the cheapest flights in our flight finder.
  • How do I find the best price on plane tickets? Choose your destination and preferred travel dates, and we’ll provide you with an overview of the cheapest, quickest, and best flights so you can compare prices and book flights with confidence. Flexible on dates? It’s even easier to find cheap flights by using our Price Calendar (found above your search results), which shows you the cheapest travel dates. This is available on all of our most popular flight routes.
  • How can Mix & Match save me money? Sometimes you can save money by combining flight tickets from different suppliers, and we call that Mix & Match. This means you can book your outbound flight with one supplier, and your return flight with another. If you can save money by combining tickets from different suppliers, we’ll automatically include this option in your flight results and label it Mix & Match. You’ll have to complete two separate booking flows after you select this deal on our site, but it’s worth it if you can save money over a traditional round-trip with one supplier. It’s an advanced way of getting the cheapest flights even if they’re offered by different suppliers.
  • How do I make sure I don’t miss a flight deal? Sign up for Price Alerts on your favorite flight routes and automatically get live price updates, so you can book flights when the price is right. You can do so next to your flight search results or in the profile menu. If you're on our app, you will find Price Alerts in the navigation menu. You can also subscribe to special offers and limited-time flight deals from our partners. Just sign in, go to Notifications in your profile and subscribe to the topics you’re interested in.

It's hard to believe, but the summer travel season is already coming to a close. Even though Labor Day Weekend is less than two weeks away, it’s not too late to score inexpensive flights and cheap hotel stays in some sunny locales. Procrastinators are being rewarded this year, as late-summer airfares in general are trending lower compared to 2023. According to data from the travel booking site Hopper , the average domestic airfare clocks in at $211 round-trip for Labor Day Weekend, which is five percent lower than last year. Even flights to Europe are averaging out to $798 round-trip, which is a 10 percent drop from Labor Day 2023.

As you're booking cheap flights , one factor to keep in mind is that many of the lowest airfares depart from airports that are expected to be the busiest over the holiday weekend, and therefore will likely be fairly hectic. The top five busiest airports over Labor Day will be Los Angeles (LAX), Boston (BOS), San Francisco (SFO), Newark (EWR), and New York -JFK, according to travel search site Kayak .

Whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure , a lively nightlife scene, or to plop down on a beautiful beach and do nothing, here are seven destinations with affordable flight options—just don't wait too long to book.

Once you arrive in Iceland, you could be treated to one of the most coveted celestial sights: the aurora borealis . Early September is the start of the peak Northern Lights season when night skies start to become darker for longer periods following the near-continuous daylight of summer.

Colorful houses in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico

August and September can be tricky months to visit Puerto Rico , as they are smack dab in the middle of hurricane season. For those willing to roll the dice, you’ll find affordable airfare available with routes like Boston to San Juan as low as $167 round trip on Hopper; New York to San Juan flights can be had for as little as $185 round trip. With those savings, you can put the bulk of your travel budget toward a stay in one of the island’s best beachfront hotels , like the Fairmont El San Juan , or the Ritz-Carlton Dorado Beach .

A beach and lifeguard stand in Miami

Like Puerto Rico, Miami also comes with hurricane risks over Labor Day. If you’re willing to bet on sunny skies, you could be rewarded with an affordable beach vacation with access to vibrant nightlife. Kayakers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan

There’s nothing quite like the dramatic coastline of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, located along Lake Superior in Northern Michigan . The sheer faces of the area’s sandstone cliffs stand in striking contrast above the lake’s blue and tranquil waters. While summer travelers flock to the national park ’s beaches, waterfalls, sand dunes, and forests, it’s still possible to squeeze in an inexpensive visit for Labor Day. Plenty of hotels in the area are still available for $300 per night or less, according to Kayak’s search feature . Although an airlift to the closest airport, Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport (MQT), is costly, the lakeshore is about a five-hour drive from some of the biggest cities in the Midwest, including Chicago , Milwaukee , and Detroit.

Ukraine war latest: Europe could face Second World War-scale security crisis this year, experts warn; UK to send hundreds of missiles to Ukraine

In a visit to Germany, Volodymyr Zelenskyy provides an update on Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region. Meanwhile, analysts warn a Trump election victory could trigger a major security crisis in Europe.

  • Zelenskyy presses US to allow long-range strikes into Russia
  • Ukraine leader shares update on Ukraine's invasion of Kursk
  • Europe could face Second World War-scale security crisis this year, experts warn
  • In visit to Germany, Ukrainian leader urges allies to ignore Putin's 'red lines'
  • UK to send 650 missiles to Ukraine
  • Russia fires more than 40 drones overnight
  • Ukraine appoints new chief diplomat
  • Analysis: Russia's imminent delivery of ballistic missiles is very worrying
  • Your questions answered : Could Zelenskyy's 'buffer zone' aim lead to war's end?

We are closing down our Ukraine live blog for the evening now - but we'll be back with more updates soon.

Before we go, here is a quick round-up of what's been happening...

  • Allies met in Germany today to discuss military aid for Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy pressed for the US to allow its weapons to be used in long-range strikes into Russia
  • However, US defence secretary Lloyd Austin said lifting arms restrictions would not be a game changer in the war
  • The UK said it would send 650 missiles to Ukraine , while the US pledged to provide another $250m in aid
  • The Ukrainian president provided updates on his military's invasion of the Russian region of Kursk, saying 6,000 Russian soldiers had been killed and Kyiv was in control of 1,300sq km
  • Experts warned a Donald Trump victory in the US election could trigger a Second World War-scale security crisis in Europe .

Defence secretary Lloyd Austin has announced a further $250m worth of American weapons will be sent to Ukraine.

The weapons include air defence munitions and artillery.

"We're also working with allies and partners to help Ukraine forge its long term security," he said during a news conference.

Defence leaders from the 50-plus partner nations who regularly gather to coordinate weapons aid for the war held a meeting in Germany today.

Mr Austin said the group was aiming to help Ukraine "build a combat credible future", which includes ramping up Kyiv's own weapon production and providing it with F-16 fighter jets.

However, as we reported earlier, Mr Austin has suggested he will not heed to Ukraine's request to allow American weapons to be used inside Russian territory.

Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region has resulted in about 6,000 casualties among Russian forces, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

The Ukrainian president had been speaking from the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, where he is in meetings with Western allies.

Mr Zelenskyy earlier said Ukraine controlled a "significant" part of the Russian region stretching over 1,300 square kilometres.

Ukrainian launched a surprise invasion of Kursk exactly one month ago.

At the time, it provided little information on why it had launched the offensive.

But the commander in chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said in an interview with CNN yesterday that Russia was planning an offensive from Kursk before Ukrainian troops launched their operation there.

The US defence secretary appears to have denied Ukraine's request to allow American weapons to be fired onto Russian territory.

Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier pushed for the US to lift such restrictions.

But Lloyd Austin told reporters after a meeting at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany that no specific weapon would be a game changer or turn the tide of war.

He noted that Russia has moved its glide bombs back beyond the range of ATACMS missiles, while Ukraine itself has significant capabilities to attack targets well beyond the range of the British Storm Shadow cruise missile.

The US has been hesitant to lift restrictions despite repeated requests from Ukraine, as it fears allowing American weapons to reach Russian soil could escalate the conflict.

Thousands of mourners gathered for the funeral services for victims of a Russian missile attack that killed seven people, including a mother and her three daughters, in Lviv today.

Yaroslav Bazylevych, whose wife, Yevgenia, 43, and daughters Emilia, 7, Daryna, 18, and Yaryna, 21, were killed, attended the funeral at the Garrison Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

The pre-dawn blasts earlier this week in the historic centre of the city also injured dozens of civilians.

The UK will extend its training programme for Ukrainian men and women to become soldiers on British soil, it has been announced.

More than 45,000 Ukrainian personnel have already received training under Operation Interflex since Russia's invasion in 2022.

But now defence secretary John Healey has announced an extension alongside President Zelenskyy and other allies at Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Germany.

The training operation was due to come to an end this year but the scheme will now continue until at least the end of 2025.

"The extension of this training, which is vital for Ukraine's defence, is another example of the UK's ironclad commitment to Ukraine," Mr Healey said.

Delivered in locations throughout the UK, the programme takes volunteer recruits who have joined the armed forces of Ukraine with little to no previous military experience and teaches them the skills required for frontline combat.

We have been reporting today on Volodymyr Zelenskyy's comments at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany where he said Ukraine now controlled more than 1,300sq km in the Kursk region.

The Ukrainian leader also urged the US to let Ukraine carry out long-range strikes in Russia.

It was Mr Zelenskyy's first visit to the air base to address the group, and he used the public appearance to stress that, in his view, what is needed most now is for the US and the West to allow him to use the weapons they provided to strike deeper inside Russia, something the US has not supported out of concern it would further escalate the war.

Here is what he said...

"We need to have this long-range capability, not only on the divided territory of Ukraine, but also on the Russian territory, so that Russia is motivated to seek peace," Mr Zelensky told the members.

"We need to make Russian cities and even Russian soldiers think about what they need: peace or Putin."

Mr Zelensky said he would continue to press for the long-range strike capability.

"Strong long-range decisions by partners are needed to bring the just peace we seek closer," he also said on Telegram.

Russia's defence ministry has said its forces have taken control of the village of Zhuravka in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region.

In an update on Telegram, it also said it had recently captured the settlements of Kirovo, Ptichye, Skuchnoye, Karlovka and Zavetnoye.

Sky News is unable to independently verify this battlefield report.

Much of the fighting in Ukraine is centred around the country's east, where Russia is aiming to break through to the key city of Pokrovsk.

The Kremlin has accused the US of applying unacceptable pressure on Russian media after the US justice department charged Russian TV contributor Dimitri Simes and his wife with schemes to violate US sanctions.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who has said Russia is not seeking to interfere in the US presidential election, told reporters that Washington was trying to ensure that Moscow's own perspective on world affairs was not available to people.

"Washington continues to try to put pressure on Russia, on Russian citizens, and even on the Russian media, which is engaged in informing both citizens inside our country and world public opinion about what is happening, from our perspective," he said.

"Washington does not even accept that there should be options out there for anyone to get news from our perspective. This is nothing other than blatant pressure. We strongly condemn this stance as unacceptable."

For context : Yesterday, the US charged Virginia-based Russian television contributor Dimitri Simes and his wife Anastasia Simes with two separate schemes to violate US sanctions.

In one of two indictments, Mr Simes and his wife are accused of laundering funds and violating US sanctions for the benefit of Channel One Russia, a Russian broadcasting station that was sanctioned in May 2022.

In exchange for providing services as a presenter and producer, prosecutors alleged that Mr Simes and his wife received over $1m, a personal car and driver, a stipend for an apartment in Moscow and a team of 10 employees from Channel One Russia.

In a second indictment, Anastasia Simes is charged with violating sanctions to benefit Aleksandr Yevgenyevich Udodov, a Russian oligarch who was sanctioned in February 2023.

Polls indicate the race for the White House has become much closer since the decision by current incumbent Joe Biden to drop out, but there remains a very real prospect that Donald Trump could win a second term as US president.

Such an eventuality would have repercussions way beyond American soil, with analysts suggesting it could be pivotal for the war in Ukraine.

And Phillips P O'Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St Andrews, and Edward Stringer, a retired RAF Air Marshal and senior fellow of UK thinktank Policy Exchange, says a Trump victory may leave Europe "in a tight spot" - and urged leaders in the continent to begin planning for that result.

"By the end of January 2025, the continent's most important partner, the United States, could be led by former President Donald Trump, who has said that he would encourage Russia to do 'whatever the hell it wanted' to European countries that did not do what he wanted: spend more on defence," they wrote in a piece for Foreign Policy magazine.

"The previous Trump administration strained the transatlantic relationship, and the next iteration would almost certainly be worse. Freed from the influence of the traditional Atlanticist Republicans who staffed his cabinet in his first term, a second-term Trump would face fewer obstacles to making good on his threats."

The pair point out that Trump has warned that he would immediately cut all US aid to Kyiv and demand a quick end to the war, which would likely require Ukraine to cede a significant part of its territory to Russia.

"And that could just be the start," they continued.

"Trump has long questioned the value of NATO, so it is not inconceivable that he would strip back the US commitment to defend Europe.

"He could enact the analyst Sumantra Maitra's widely circulated 'dormant NATO' proposal, in which the US military would provide logistics support as a last resort but leave all other NATO defence responsibilities to Europe, or follow in the footsteps of French President Charles de Gaulle, who removed France from NATO's military command (but not the alliance itself) in 1966."

They said Trump could act quickly, by vowing never to order US troops to fight for Europe.

"Europe, as a result, would be forced to confront a security crisis on a scale it has not faced since World War II," they write.

After discussing the possible strategy for Europe if this situation were to come to pass - including speculation as to which countries might step in to replace the US's military leadership, the authors argued that countries must act with urgency to prepare.

"Time is a precious commodity in war. And today, with a war on its doorstep and the United States threatening to push European security to its most precarious point in decades, the continent is wasting it," they say.

"European countries should have started planning for the possibility of a Trump return at least a year ago, when the high chance of such an outcome became apparent, giving themselves more time to make preparations.

"Instead, European governments stuck their heads in the sand. If Trump is elected, such denial will have to end. European NATO states will be forced into action to secure the continent and protect the freedom of its people.

"It is far better they approach that weighty task as rationally and with as much foresight as possible than in a haphazard rush."

Top 5 airlines serving from Cincinnati to Anywhere

I am so shocked at the service in first class. We were not greeted or offered a beverage for 45 minutes into the flight. She did however have time to write a long note. I just wanted a snack and something to drink. We were never offered coffee and the snacks came after dinner? It was the oddest flight I have ever been on. The gentleman next to me got up and gave our dinner box’s to the flight attendant and asked for a second glass of wine for each of us. Our dinner boxes sat on our tray for 20 minutes. She was rather distracted. He then asked another flight attendant for wine… finally we had a second glass. I was trying to give her some grace, she also told the man next me we couldn’t have any more wine because we drank it all… after landing the seasoned traveler next me ask for her employee number. Then it was a mutiny! She was refusing and it got tense. The captain came and asked what was happening, the flight attendants totally gave a biased account of the fact. The captain told the police the man I was seated next to was intoxicated! That was completely inaccurate and it really escalated things. I policeman found me at the luggage carousel to verify the facts. The flight attendants made false accusations that he touched them! That never happened. It was a very poorly trained crew. I am so anngry and shock by the entire experience! It was terrible service! I would like a refund for what I paid to be in first class and the most uncomfortable flight ever. I always fly Delta, it has been wonderful. I was so flustered by the entire experience! Please give me an update on this matter! Thank you, Kelle Myers

It was reported to the passengers that Delta failed to schedule the crew properly. This error caused the pilot to show up about 30 minutes late. All in all Delta's inability to take care of this basic function resulted in about an hour delay.

Food was not the best. Too many items had sauce pm them with a lot of spices The seat was not comfortable especially when you lay down

Late departure due to large number of wheel chair patrons. Used to having a box of snacks to select from in comfort plus. The flight attendant just rattled off what was available and asked us to pick. Felt rushed and uncomfortable. Seat was great. Prefer having the screen on the seat in front of me instead of having to pull it up from the seat side. Lots of room for my carryon under the seat in front of me.

The airplanes were so old and out-dated it was terrifying to fly on them.

It’s was good. There’s so much room for improvement though. Since the plane was small, there was no entertainment but for years now, the most jarring aspect of travel is the lack of tasty snacks.

The important things including boarding and the flight being on time and safe were excellent. The disappointment comes from the comfort and amenities. Was misled by the "availability" of inflight internet- there is an extra cost. The tray table was broken, the bathroom door stuck and flight attendants were competent but not very friendly.

The Pilot was one of the best I've had, very informative about turbulence and got us to our destination early

The Gate Attendant @ Gate B36 was rude The flight was good but the entertainment system was not functioning as expected. The snacks were ok but could be better The flight crew was excellent.

Flight was delayed, missed connectingnflight to DC. Put me on flight to Baltimore, had to rent a car for $200. Plane was old, wall peeling around window. Flight was packed, every seat full on small plane. I spent 14 hrs on Friday in airports and missed my planned weekend event.

It was so uncomfortable for 14 straight hours it was torture

To san Francisco it was ok. From sf to Manila it was horrible

They opened my checked bag and even though my lock was tsa approved, they loose my lock and left my bag just like that. Incompetent people, very upset about it. I’ll try to avoid traveling with united

The passenger in the row in front of me was listening to a political speech on his phone at full volume with no headphones and it was disturbing all of the passengers around him for several rows. I asked 2 of the flight attendants to speak to this passenger but they only shrugged. It was obvious that they were afraid there might be conflict and would not say anything. I had to take it upon myself to tell the passenger that he needed to turn it off or wear headphones as it was disturbing everyone around him not wearing their own headphones. I was very disappointed in the United flight attendants.

Flight was ok. Unfortunately it was a Boeing 737, which is a cramped / tight airplane. I prefer the Airbus as they are a more comfortable flight experience.

United ground crew and pilots are friendly. The in-flight staff (flight attendants) are the worst in the world. Multiple trips, always unpleasant, combative, use implicit threats to not allow for a discussion on their decision. Authoritarian. This seems to stem from an internal corporate wide policy as I doubt that United is intentionally searching for people that are not fit for customer facing positions. I will not fly United again. Good luck fixing your business

We fly to Ecuador frequently. Checking in is usually a hassle because most United agents take some time before they can verify that my passport doesn't require a visa to Ecuador. This time the process was even longer due to the cyber attack. But she was really nice to us. So glad we brought plenty of snacks to supplement the 3 flights from SEA to GYE.

Awful, rude staff. Their abrasive comments are unnecessary. Most seek a frictionless experience and will cooperate if you ask. Additional childish bullying of customers is not acceptable or tolerated. We had the same problem with our departure flight. We will never fly United again.

Everything was fantastic. Modern plane. All the amenities! Although the paid snacks and meals are pure robbery. Like i understand airlines need to make money, but 11$ USD for an overnight oats with some nuts in it and barely any pieces of apple.... Highway robbery

Onboarding process was great and efficient. Plane was very new and entertainment choices were great. The only complain is no meal despite it was a flight that is longer than 6 hours.

First time flying with them and will definitely fly again in the future. Crew was so nice and friendly, fought was seamless. They are simple planes, no entertainment, but it’s fine for a short flight or if you have personal devices Rates are competitive, and they did so well with keeping the flight on time after a tropical storm, where other airlines had delays and cancellations.

They boarded passengers that sat in the back of the plane first, making boarding very efficient.

I didn't even take this flight. My plans changed and I couldn't get ahold of customer service and the website kept breaking down during the attempt to change the flight. I wound up taking another airline entirely and eating the cost.

The worst flying experience ever 3 delays. No accommodations. Had to deboard the plane after being delayed.

Posted a 20minute delay but didn’t delay at all. Caused boarding issues and confusion. Also, didn’t release baggage. Took over an hour and 20 minutes to get luggage.

Flight was good, boarding was a breeze, flight attendants were friendly and professional. There was a medical issue with another passenger and the crew handled it in a calm and professional way.

The net issue I had was with the gate agent. We had added a carryon to our boarding pass when we checked bags. When I got to the boarding gate the agent was rude asking why I had a backpack - I said I added it - even had an orange tag on it. She ripped my tag off and swung her monitor around to show me how she was right- saying it isn’t wasn’t listed - only a checked bag. I explained again that I wasn’t sure what the issue was but I wouldn’t have an orange tag if I hadn’t added it. Then she finally checked my husband’s boarding pass and found that the agent at checkin had added my carryon to his boarding pass instead of mine. She sent me on my way without my orange tag. Was a bit embarrassing for me the tone she used with me assuming I was trying to get away with something.

Gate agent asked if I could switch seats so a family could sit together. Agent moved me to a seat in the front of the plane, no charge. It was easy. The agent did a great job.

Great seat space. However food and drink prices outrageous. Jabbing to pay for a carry on bag or stuck paying at the gate too much.

Every Allegiant Air flight I've ever taken has been delayed. This flight was delayed a full 2 hours. It was excuse after excuse after excuse. It was a flight from southern Florida. They made us board the plane on time, but made us wait for 2 hours on the tarmac. Because the engines were kept shut off, so was the air conditioning. One can only imagine how hot the air was in the cabin over those 2 hours on the tarmac, while in the hot Florida sun. Just terrible.

Departure more than an hour later. Conexion/waiting time at the airport was more than 7 hours :(

3 hour delay on run way, not even a drink offered, staff seemed rude and rushed, felt unwell so asked twice for paracetamol and was told to wait, never got it

Flight was scheduled to leave at 6:25am. Went to bed at 9pm to get enough sleep. Flight cancelled at 1am that morning. Only flights available either landed at 8:30pm (9 hours later and 3 hours after the event I was trying to attend) or in a completely different state. Way to screw up my weekend, American.

Easy trip, left on time. Very impressed. Great pilot who talked to us

Best flight by a pilot I’ve ever been on as a 62 year old

I was bumped to first class so I got some food. It was OK. Entertainment is whatever you bring with you since there are no seatback screens.

Flights were on time. That's the main consideration since I had to change planes. The entertainment was whatever you bring with you and the food (in Economy) is non-existant. Neither of those was a surprise.

also wi-fi never worked attendant said satellite coverage is spotty over water ..... but we were over land!

Mobility assistance at DFW is A JOKE!!! Totally disorganized, ineffective and annoying. Ended up having to walk and find our own way for a good part of the very, very long walk between gates. Worst assistance I have ever experienced.

Boarding, Seating, Flight Attendants, flight was okay. My seat was uncomfortable.

There was extremely long wait times to check in my bags and pass through TSA. I almost missed my flights on several occasions.

I didn’t have enough time to catch my connecting flight and had to use a different Airline. I will be requesting a refund.

There were a lot of issues at the gate in Atlanta — which caused delays in boarding and getting to our destination. The aircraft and crew were excellent.

It was fine. The flight was delayed for 3 hours. I had things scheduled in Detroit, and I let a lot of people down by not being there on time.

First time experience and though you'll pay for *everything* meaning bags, water/snacks, even a question with a service agent - - all in all, not a bad experience whatsoever.

Long lines, rude staff, everything that's offered you have to pay for.

Among the worst flights I’ve taken. Never again. Staff was horrible across the entire Frontier workforce. Flight attendants were legitimately yelling at and arguing with each other while on board - toxic environment (really guys? at work and in front of customers no less?). Frontier intentionally assigned my partner and I (who booked together) to opposite ends of the plane despite plenty of seats together - straight up predatory practices to take people’s money. Seats are legit the absolute worst. Not even free coffee. Absolute garbage airline with wild hidden fees and the worst staff in the business. They will for sure have a deadly accident soon. Never again, not for any where not for any price.

My departure gate was E10 but no kiosk at E10 for check in & no one to ask. A United attendant helped direct us to E38 for check in. The kiosks at E38 were all malfunctioning. A counter agent had to check us in. We then had to walk back to E10 for boarding. E10 to E38 at DfW is not an easy trek. No where in all the info they sent us indicated there were issues to over come. They can cut only so many corners. Luckily we arrived plenty early to deal with Frontier’s inefficiency.

Our flight was delayed by four hours without notice, the app for getting my boarding pass is super confusing, and I wasn’t able to check a suitcase without paying for a higher cost package

Flight was cancelled and was not able to get another flight thru Frontier. Per frontier a refund was issued but I do not see a refund on my Afirm account.
