2. Thiksey Monastery – Find Peace

Resembling the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, Thiksey is one of the beautiful Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. 10 Monasteries In Leh Ladakh That Is A Must Visit For Peace Seekers

When you read the word ‘monastery’, what comes to your mind? A Buddhist temple located in the far flung and less-explored areas of the Grand Himalayas? Or monks dressed in Buddhist attires chanting mantras? Or the mask-dances with celebrations? Or a place that is peaceful and tranquil? Monasteries have so much more to them than just these perceptions. They have a certain history and culture that they nonchalantly boast of. As we all know, monasteries are buildings or building complexes containing domestic quarters and workplaces of monks, monastics or nuns, living alone or in communities. They also contain a place for worship/prayers like a chapel, church or a temple along with dormitory, cloister, refrectory, library, balneary and infirmary. Some monasteries may also include a hospice, school, barn and in some countries, even a brewery! The Himalayas are known for their monasteries, sitting sturdily atop jagged hills and withstanding years of boorish weather. While they look rustic, they are astonishingly rich in culture and heritage.

1. Lamayuru Monastery

This Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in village Lamayuru, which lies between Kargil and Leh, is situated at a height of 3,510 metres. This monastery is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with a population of around 150 monk residents. Many years ago, this monastery was a complex comprising of 5 huge buildings, out of which only one remains. It plays host to two annual masked dance festivals, when all the monks of the surrounding areas gather to pray together. The monastery is home to many beautiful wall paintings, murals, thangkas and scriptures. The tourists are allowed to access the prayer hall only, which is one of the most crucial areas of the monastery.

How to get there- Lamayuru village is around 125 kms from Leh on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. You could also take the State Transport Buses which ply between Leh and Lamayuru at 0800 and 1400 hours.

While here- Do not forget to stroll through the Lamayuru village, sipping a cup of tea and enjoying the hospitality of the warm friendly villagers. You could also witness the splendid landscape of Moonland, which is believed to bear a soil similar to the one on moon. You could gorge on Thupkas and biryanis at the Lamayuru Restaurant if hungry!

2. Alchi Monastery

Alchi monastery is primarily a monastic complex comprising of four seperate settlements in the Alchi village, dated to different periods believed to be between 958 and 1055 by Rinchen Zangpo . The monastery complex comprises of Dukhang (Assembly Hall), the Sumtsek and the Manjushri Temple along with the ‘Lotsabha Lakhang’ and ‘Lakhang Soma’, which are the lesser known temples. While Dukhang is the largest and oldest preserved part of the monastery, Sumtsek is a 3-story temple popular for its four armed big Bodhisattva statue, equivalent to two floors. The unique style and workmanship of the Alchi monastic complex is the best known in this region which carries the artistic and spiritual details of both Buddhism and Hindu kings of that era in Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. This complex is home to some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh, huge statues of Buddha, elaborate wood carvings and art work comparable to the Baroque style.

How to get there- The monastery lies around 70 kms from Leh. You could take a cab to reach here.

While here- You can indulge in rafting as this monastery is close to river Zanskar or shop for pashmina shawls, woollen jackets or apricots. You could also taste the Change beer which is a local brew and is widely banned in Leh.

Best time to visit- The most preferrable time to visit the Alchi Gompa is during the festivals of Chotrul Duchen, Dajyur, Galdan Namchot, Losar, Monlam and Sho Dun. Also, the visiting hours are 0800- 1300 hrs and 1330-1800 hrs.

3. Shey Monastery

Situated around 15 kms from Leh, this monastery was built in 1655 by the king of Ladakh, Deldan Namgyal to be used as summer retreat by the kings of Ladakh. The Shey Monastery, built on an altitude of 11,200 feet is known for its giant copper with guilded gold statue of a seated Shakyamuni Buddha and is said to be the second largest such statue in Ladakh. There are many Chortens around here which contain the ashes of royal dignitaries and Lamas.

Best time to visit- During the celebrations of Shey Doo Lhoo, which takes place on the 26th and 27th day of the first Tibetan month to celebrate the beginning of sowing season and and Shey Suey Rupla, which is held to welcome the harvesting season.

How to get there- You could hire a cab from Leh to reach this place.

4. Diskit Monastery

This 350 year old monastery is the oldest and largest monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh and belongs to the Gelupa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Diskit Monastery is situated on a hill, just above the flood plains of the Shyok river and makes for a beautiful sight. The monastery houses a statue of Cho Rinpoche (Crowned Buddha) in the prayer hall, a huge drum and several images of fierce guardian deities. The Diskit Monastery also runs an NGO, Tibet Support Group. One of the most spectacular feature of this monastery is the panoramic view of the Nubra valley from the top of the monastery.

How to get there- You can take a cab from Leh to reach the Diskit village.

While here- Do not forget to see the 106 feet long statue of Jampa ( Maitreya) Buddham, built atop a hill, facing the river Shyok.

5. Spituk Gompa

Situated atop a hill at a height of 3,307 metres, this monastery lies around 8kms from Leh. The site of this monastery was blessed by the Arhat Nyimagung and dates back to the 11th century. The monastery comprises of three chapels, many statues of Buddha and thangkas, with the Dukhang Hall being the main highlight. The monastery houses about 100 monks and contains a giant statue of Kali. This monastery is home to the Gustor Festival which is held from the 27th – 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar. This festival wtiness a lot of mask-dances and prayers with a large number of natives getting together. While here – enjoy the artifacts and unique collection of ancient masks, antique arms and fine thangkas along with the statue of Vajrabhairava in the upper section; however, it is only unveiled during the festivals.

6. Namgyal Tsemo Monastery

This is another Buddhist monastery in the Leh district of Ladakh and worth paying a visit to. This monastery comprises of a three-storey high gold statue of Maitreya Buddha along with many ancient manuscripts and frescoes. It was founded by King Tashi Namgyal of Ladakh in 1430. This monastery is situated atop a mountain just behind the Leh Palace and offers panoramic views of the snow clad mountains of the Zanskar range, Indus river and the surrounding areas of the valley. This monastery is a known for being a ‘photographer’s delight’ as the view changes with the light throughout the day.

How to get there- You could take a cab to this monastery from anywhere in Leh.

While here- You can visit the Namgyal Tsemo Palace which is 9 stories high and offers a breathtaking view of the entire region.

7. Hemis Monastery

This monastery is a Himalayan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Lineage in Hemis, Ladakh. The monastery is located around 45 kms from Leh and hosts the Annual Hemis Festival in early June. The monastery is believed to have existed before the 11th century, however it was re-established/completed in 1672. This monastery is believed to be the place where young lamas are trained for the royal monasteries at Leh, Shey and Basgo. Hemis monastery houses many beautiful thangkas along with many gold statues and stupas which are decorated with precious stones. This monastery is considered to be the most beautiful and most important of all monasteries in the Ladakh region and the annual festival which held here during the months of June and/or July is one of the major tourist attractions.

How to get there- This monastery can be reach by cab from anywhere in Leh.

While here- Do not forget to explore a museum which exhibits a large collection of Buddhist relics and to pay homage to the large statues of Lord Buddha and Guru Rimpoche.

8. Thiksey Monastery

This monastery is a gompa affiliated with the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is located atop a hill at a height of 3,600 m, around 19 kms from Leh. It is the largest gompa in central Ladakh and is known for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This twelve story complex contains a separate set of buildings for female renunciates and houses many items of the Buddhist art such as stupas, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. Not to be missed is the 49 feet high statue of Maitreya, which was installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama. It is the largest such statue in Ladakh. The monastery is home to a large pillar engraved with Buddha’s teachings along with a 15 metre high statue of Buddha in the main prayer hall.

How to get there- This place is well connected to most places arount it through cabs and buses.

While here- You can pay a visit to the museum which houses many sacred items.

9. Likir Monastery

This gompa is located around 52 kms in the west of Leh and beautifully sits on a little hill in the valley. It is situated near the river Indus on the Srinagar-Leh Highway. Located on an erstwhile major trade route which travelled via Tingmosgang, Hemis, Likir to Leh, this village now stays isolated. Belonging to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, this monastery was established in 1065 by Lama Duwang Chosje, under the command of the fifth king of Ladakh, Lhachen Gyalpo. The monastery has two assembly halls known as Dukhangs. While the newer Dukhang is around only 200 years old, the older Dukhang is relatively more elaborate as it houses six rows of seats for the lamas and a throne for the Head Lama of Likir, besides containing huge statues of Bodhisattva, Amitabha, Sakyamuni, Maitreya and Tsong Khapa, precious old manuscripts, a remarkable thangka collection, old costumes and earthen pots. The newer Dukhang contains a unique statue of Avalokitesvara with 1000 arms and 11 heads along with bookcases with volumes of Sumbum, describing the life and teachings of Tsong Khapa.

While here- if you are visiting around the 27th-29th in the 12th month of Tibetan calendar, witness the Likir Dosmoche Festival showcasing some exceptional religious dance performances.

10. Phugtal Monastery

One of the only Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh that can still be reached only by foot, it was built around a natural cave around 2,550 years ago. The cave is believed to have been visited by various sages, scholars, translators and monks in search of peace and solitude for meditation back then. The monastery gets its name from the Zangskari dialect of the Tibetan languages meaning, ‘phuk’ for cave and ‘thal’ for leisure/liberation; referring to the ‘cave of leisure’ or ‘cave of liberation’. It is located in the remote village of Lungnak and getting its supplies via horses/donkeys and mules in the warmer months and through the frozen Zanskar river in winters. This monastery maintains a Traditional Tibetan medical clinic which caters to the local community of the village of Lungnak. An on-site Amchi (a traditional Tibetan physician) provides natural Sowa-Rigpa medicine, mostly prepared at the monastery itself. The monastery is home to various cultural festivals such as Smonlam Chenmo, Chudsum Chodpa, Chonga Chodpa, Gyalwe Jabstan, Yarnas, Gadam Nagchod and Jigched Lhachusum Ceremony.

How to get there- As mentioned, this monastery can only be reached by foot, so get ready to do some walking and climbing!

While here- Pay a visit to the adjoining Phuktal Monastic School which offers quality education to the poor and least educated without charging any fees.

The most recommended time to visit any monastery in the Leh Ladakh region would be during the summer months i.e. between February and October. The winter months witness a lot of snow and one could be left stranded as the roads get blocked/closed. These monasteries are not just places to explore but also a way to escape the busy lives. They not only provide the much needed peace and tranquility, but also lend us a different perspective and better understanding about the Buddhist culture. These are the most popular gompas of the Ladakh region, although you may find many more once you set out to explore. And each gompas tells a story about the place, sect and history of that kingdom. To conclude, I would say, it is an experience worth experiencing!

Diskit Monastery

Diskit is the administrative centre of Nubra valley and is popular for the ancient monasteries it holds. Belonging to the 14th century, this monastery is considered to be the largest and oldest monastery in Nubra Valley. Also known as Diskit Gompa, the monastery's most prominent attraction is the huge Maitreya Buddha statue atop it, which was inaugurated by HH Dalai Lama. From the base of the statue, one can get a gorgeous panoramic view of the Nubra valley. The monastery was founded by Changzen Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century and is situated on a hill above the plains of Shayok river. One should also visit the monastery for its vast collection of murals and display of frescoes. Visit the monastery especially in December to attend the Dosmoche festival held here.

Alchi Monastery

The largest gompa built by Rinchen Zangpo, a translator of Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Tibetan, Alchi Monastery is among the most famous sites in the region. Tourists can pay their respects at the various shrines and temples, like the principal Buddha Vairocana Lhakhang, Lotsava Lhakhang, Jamyang Lhakhang (Manjusri temple) and sumtsag Lhakhang. The main statue is that of the Vairocana Buddha, however, there are other smaller statues depicting Lord Buddha. A unique aspect of this monastery is that the paintings here are not in thangka style. Rather, they boast an Indian-style art. To build this monastery, Rinchen Zangpo is said to have brought painters, carvers and sculptures over from the Kashmir valley. Located on the outskirts of the city, the monastery is said to have been built around 1000 AD.

Founded by Mahasiddha Naropa, an Indian Buddhist, Dzongkhul Monastery is a place of rest and meditation. The cave in which Naropa spent time is still located at the site of this monastery. It is said that he struck his hand staff at a rock at this spot which resulted in the founding of this monastery. Many Mahasiddhas of Zanskar like Dubchen Kunga Gyatso, Dubchen Nawang Tsering, Dzadpa Dorje, Karmapa, Kunga Choslag, and lama Norboo have meditated here. The monastery houses important items like image of Samvara, a crystal stupa and religious texts containing biographies and scriptures. There is also a meditation cave, which is said to have Panchen Naropa's footprint that's embedded into a rock along with his sacred spring that is revered to this day.

Zangla Monastery

Located in the picturesque Zangla area of the Kargil region of Ladakh, Zangla Monastery is perched atop a hill. It is noted for beautiful wall paintings and murals. Home to around 150 lamas, the monastery belongs to the Drukpa order and is much visited for the spectacle of Tibetan studies conducted by Hungarian scholar Korosi Csoma Sandor in 1823-1824.

Namgyal Tsemo Gompa

This Buddhist monastery in Leh consists of two 15th century temples below the Tsemo ruins. To travel to this monastery, one can take a 3 km loop from the polo ground and then a 600 m dead-end spur off the Nubra Road. The temples are dedicated to 8-m-tall gold-faced Maitreya, and the other comprises of protector deities.

Likir Monastery

Located about 62 km west of Leh, Likir Monastery was built on the land that was blessed by Lama Duwang Chosje. It is said that since the monastery was encircled by the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the naga- rajas, it came to be known as ‘Likir’ meaning ‘The Naga – Encircled’. The monastery flourished in the 15th century. Even today, the three basic Pratimoksa disciplines, which are the basis of all Buddhist teachings, are observed. The monastery is home to many shrines. Every year, on the 27th to 29th days of the twelfth month of the Tibetan calendar, the votive offerings known as Dosmochey are offered and holy dances are performed.

Thiksey Monastery

Often considered the most beautiful monastery in all of Ladakh, Thiksey Gompa is located about 22 km away from Leh. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism. In 1430 AD, the gompa of Thiksey Monastery was built on a hillock by Spon Paldan Sherab. There are many religious objects and shrines located in this monastery. About 250 monks call it home. The Gustor Festival is celebrated from 17th to 19th of the ninth month of Tibetan Calendar. Sacred dances are performed during this time. Also at this site is an ancient temple built by Rinchen Zangpo. Its ruins are dedicated to Goddess Dorje Chenmo.

Spituk Monastery

Located in the periphery of Leh, Spituk Monastery is perched on a conical hill with three chapels. Established in the 11th century, it was built by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. The name of the monastery means “exemplary” a word used by Rinchen Zangpo for this place. The main statue is that of the Lord Buddha. On the 27th to 29th days of the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar, religious masked dances are performed during the festival of Gustor. It is revered and celebrated with much fanfare. Spituk Monastery’s branches are Stok Monastery, Sankar Monastery and Saboo Monastery. About 150 monks call the Spituk Monastery home. It belongs to the Gelugpa order of Buddhism.

Shey Monastery and Palace

A stone's throw from Leh, Shey Monastery and Palace is best known for the three-storey statue of Buddha Shakyamuni. Made of copper, the statue is said to be a one-of-a-kind structure in the region. The palace complex is sprinkled with many Buddhist chortens. Even though it is in ruins now, the Shey Palace has an impressive façade and warrants a visit. The palace complex is said to have been built by Delden Namgyal, ruler of Ladakh region, in the beginning of the 17th century AD.

Hemis Monastery

Located on the outskirts of Leh, Hemis Monastery lies on the banks of the Indus river and belongs to the Dugpa Kargyutpa order. It is believed to be the biggest and the richest monastery of Ladakh and is hidden inside a gorge-like formation. Masked dances are performed here during the 9th and 10th days of the fifth month of the Tibetan calendar. The monastery houses a copper-gilt statue of Lord Buddha, numerous stupas made of gold and silver, sacred thangka paintings, and other objects of religious importance. Hemis Monastery is said to have been built by the first incarnation of Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso in the year 1630. Visitors can stay overnight in order to attend morning prayers.

This monastery is dedicated to Naropa, who is considered as one of the enlightened Buddhist masters. Decorated by the prayer flags, this monastery is one of the most famous monasteries in Ladakh.

The Hemis Monastery is dedicated to the Drukpa Buddhist community who maintains and manages the day-to-day workings of the monastery. Alchi Choskor Monastery is one of the most popular monasteries in Ladakh full of ancient sculptures, documents, books, and artifacts. This monastery is divided into three sections and is considered a learning center for Buddhist scholars. 

This monastery is one of the Tibetan monasteries in Ladakh built by Rinchen Zangpo during the 12th century. Alchi monastery is considered the largest monastery in Ladakh which is built by the side of the Indus River. Alchi monastery can be reached by traveling around 70 kilometers from the main city of Leh. 

Unlike other monasteries in Ladakh, this monastery is not built on a hill but instead constructed on a plain. One of the main features of this monastery is the Boddhisattva statue with 2 storeys tall. Other statues of Maitreya Buddha, Manjushri, and Avalokiteshvara are also constructed on the ground floor of the monastery. You can also find a sculpture of Rinchen Tsangpo in the monastery.

The Lamayuru monastery is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh which is believed to be built in the 11th century. This monastery was also believed to be a place for meditation for Naropa who is considered as one of the enlightened masters in Tibetan Buddhism.

9. Matho Monastery

Located on the other side of the Indus River from Thiksey Monastery, Matho Monastery offers a unique experience for those curious about the different Buddhist customs in Ladakh. • Leh Ladakh generally remains closed for more than 6 months from November to April or Mid-May due to heavy snowfall on the mountain passes.
• Inner Line Permits are no longer required to travel the inner line areas of Ladakh from August 2021 for Indian Nationals. However, those visiting Ladakh will still have to pay a green fee or environment fee of INR 400, a daily fee of INR 20 per person for wildlife protection, and a one-time fee of INR 100 towards the Red Cross Fund. Indus valley to thiksey, hemis, chemrey.

This 1-day Indus valley monastery tour takes you to some of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. This includes Thiksey monastery which resembles the Potala palace in Tibet and Hemis monastery which is the largest gompa in Ladakh. You will visit Shey palace with its 12-metre-high copper statue of Buddha gilded in gold. Stok palace , where the Ladakhi royal family currently lives, has an interesting museum displaying precious royal artefacts and family treasures. You will stop along the Indus river to admire the Stakna monastery built atop a rocky peak. If you drive 20 kilometres more, you could go to Chemrey and visit the beautiful gompa dominating the village and the barley fields.

We shall straight dive into the most spectacular monastery around Leh city. Thiksey monastery clings to the side of a hill, resembling a mini version of the renowned Potala Palace of Lhasa in Tibet. In the 15th century, Takpa Bumde, the king of Ladakh, sent a messenger to Galwa Tsongkhapa (the founder of Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism) for a Pontiff for his domain. Assenting to the king’s application, Tsongkhapa assigned the task to Changsem Shesrab Zangpo, one of his six prominent students who established the Dharma in the border areas of Tibet. Consequently, accompanied with many auspicious signs and omens, Thiksey monastery was constructed in mid-15th century under the guidance of Pon Palden Shesrab, a disciple of Changsem Shesrab Zangpo.

Hemis Monastery

About 43 km from Leh, Hemis monastery is perhaps the largest, the richest and the most well-known monastery within Ladakh. It was founded in the 17th century by Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso of Tibet on the invitation of the King Sengge Namgyal. The monastery belongs to Drukpa Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Hemis possesses one of the world’s largest thangka , which they unfurl for public display once in twelve years. Hemis Tsechu (the annual festival) is popular among the locals and tourists. It commemorates the birthday of Guru Padmasambhava, the great Indian master and yogi venerated across Tibet and the Himalayan regions. 

Shey Palace

Shey palace is located about 14 km to the east of Leh. The palace-cum-monastery was built in the loving memory of late king Sengge Namgyal by his son king Deldan Namgyal in 1655 AD. 

The centre attraction of Shey palace is the 12m copper gilded statue of seated Buddha Shakyamuni (erected as a tribute from the son to his father). The locals visit the Buddha with reverence as it fulfils one's wishes. You should also make a prayer. Who knows it comes true! The ground floor of the temple is the Dukhang (assembly hall) used for prayer ceremonies. Its walls are painted beautifully with frescos depicting different manifestation of Buddha. The main temple is on the second floor, where you could see the Buddha’s peaceful eyes and his charming face. A small shrine to the left-hand side of the main temple is meant for butter lamps. The caretaker monk keeps these lamps lit perpetually. The light offerings are a symbol of diffusing the darkness of ignorance. 

Stok Palace

Stok palace is the last addition to the royal palaces of Ladakh as it was built in as late as in the 1820s. Consequently, the Palace is intact, well maintained and still serves the royal progenies of Ladakh.

Located some 16 km from Leh, to the far left bank of the Indus river, the palace was commissioned as a retreating residence for the royalty when the reign of the last king Tsewang Tundup came to an end. After suffering defeat from Zorawar Singh, the general of Dogra king, Ladakh lost its independence to Maharaja Gulab Sing of Jammu. Considered the dark ages, Ladakh remained under Dogras almost a century until the Indian Independence in 1947 when it was made a part of Jammu and Kashmir.

Stakna Monastery

Stakna monastery sits on a hillock to the left of picturesque Indus river, some 23 km from Leh. Stak-na translates into ‘Tiger’s-nose’. The small mound, jutting out of the riverbed, appears like a tiger and its summit where the monastery rests like its nose. Therefore, the monastery is named as ‘Stakna’ or ‘Tiger’s nose’. 

Chosje Modzin, a renowned scholar and sage of Bhutan, founded the monastery in the 17th century on the invitation of the king Jamyang Namgyal. To this day, successive reincarnates of the Stakna Tulku heads the monastery. It belongs to the Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Buddhism.

Chemrey Monastery

Chemrey monastery was founded three and a half centuries ago by the famed duo of Lama Stagtsang Raspa and his patron the King Sengge Namgyal. Situated at 45 km east of Leh, the monastery overlooks the Chemrey village as it perches on a rocky mound. Like any monastery in Ladakh that belongs to one of the four major Tibetan Buddhism traditions, Chemrey belongs to Drugpa Kagyu. Since its foundation, the recurrent incarnations of Stagtsang Raspa act as its incumbent head lama.

The grand and impressive structure stands tall right in the middle of the lush green village. You would be taken aback upon setting your eyes on the monastery as it appears more of a fortress than a monastery when compared to the humble houses of the sleepy settlement. The monastery comprises of Dukhang (the assembly hall), Guru Lhakhang which houses an ancient image of Guru Padmasambhava, Protector’s chamber, Goddess Tara chamber, Lama Lhakhang and other smaller rooms.

Itinerary Detail

Arrival Leh in the morning and transfer to the hotel. Take complete rest for the day for acclimatization to the high altitude of Leh (11,500 ft / 3500 mtrs). Overnight in hotel.

The 2nd day of the tour is a free day at Leh for rest. The day is at your leisure. You can go for the city tour and enjoy the time here, In the afternoon you can visit Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa, Leh Palace & the markets. You can also pay your respects at the Military Hall of Fame which is being established and maintained by the Indian Army. It is a museum and memorial of the war heroes.

Return to the hotel in the evening and enjoy the dinner. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

After breakfast leave for Nubra Valley, driving across Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft). After descending from the pass, drive on for sightseeing of Sumoor area. Later check into a fixed camp in the same area or drive across to Deskit for overnight stay in a camp.

In the morning visit / explore Deskit , Hundar and the Sand Dunes where you can enjoy a short camel safari using the double-humped Bactrian camel found here (optional on direct payment). Later drive back to Leh, reaching in the late afternoon / evening. Overnight at the hotel.

On the 5th day of the tour, you will head towards Alchi after having a delicious breakfast. You will drive to Sham Valley and en-route stop at Likir Monastery. The monastery comprises great statue of Maitreya Buddha which will leave you spellbound. Later, proceed to visit the Alchi Monastery which is famous for its miniature paintings. Enjoy the 1000-year old murals which are also listed among the best Buddhist miniature paintings.

During your visit to Alchi, you will drive past the Magnetic Hill or the gravity hill, which is a natural wonder of the region. You will also get an opportunity to visit the Kali Mata (Temple of Guardians in Spituk monastery) and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib.

After the exciting day, return to Leh. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Early departure for Pangong Lake (approx. 145 kms, located on the Indo China Border), via Chang-la pass (alt: 17370 ft). After full day of sightseeing around the Lake check-in at fixed tented camp near the lake at Spangmik or drive back for 30 kms to Tangtse and check into Hotel / Guest House for overnight stay.

After breakfast, leave Pangong / Tangtse and retrace the Leh route across Chang-la. Upon reaching Karu, drive across the Indus and visit the famous Hemis Monastery, biggest monastery of Ladakh. Later drive on to Leh, enroute visiting the picturesque Thiksey monastery. Overnight in hotel.

Early morning transfer to the airport for taking the flight back home.-Tour ends.

Thiksey Monastery is famous for its stark resemblance to the Potala Palace in Tibet. Located close to Leh, it is the largest gompa in central Ladakh and a must visit tourist attraction. Among the many attractions of the Thiksey Monastery, one is the Maitreya Temple, which was installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama in 1970. The other attraction is a 15 meter tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, famous as the largest statue in Ladakh.

Not only is the Karsha Monastery the largest monastery in Zanskar, it also dates back to the 10th century and contains several ancient rock carvings. The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Buddhism, known by their large Yellow Hats. It also houses the bone relics of Dorje Rinchen. Other attractions of the Karsha Monastery are wall paintings and the Avalokiteshvara Temple.

Hemis Monastery, located around 45 kilometers from Leh, the capital city of Ladakh, is famously known as the richest monastery in Ladakh. It attracts tourists in large numbers during the Hemis Festival, celebrated over the course of two days. A major highlight of the festival is the unfurling of the giant thangka (religious painting). There is also a museum within the monastery which houses a rich collection of Tibetan books, Thangkas, Stupas and gold statues embedded with weapons, precious stones, stuffed vulture pup and carriers.

Alchi Monastery is a monastic complex located in the Alchi Village in the district of Leh. The monastery complex has four separate settlements which house monuments that date back to different times. The paintings which are found inside the Alchi Monastery are the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh/ A special feature about the wall paintings are the intricate details of both Buddhist & Kashmiri styles of architecture. Other attractions of the Alchi Monastery are the Assembly Hall, Sumtseg, Manjushri Temple and Chortens.

Architecture of Monasteries in Ladakh

The monasteries in Ladakh are enormous in size, and naturally so, since they serve as the accommodation and school for monks, and are home to a library, kitchen and attached fields.

The main building of a monastery is rectangular in shape, and consists of a series of inner halls, open courtyards and passages. In some of the large monasteries like Thiksey and Chemrey Monasteries, the worshipping areas are located on the top stories, like the assembly hall, head lama’s quarter, lhakhangs dedicated to a particular deity. In other monasteries though, like Alchi, separate buildings are alloted to worship.

The shrine rooms contain large statues of Gautam Buddha, Bodhisattvas and Taras, along with kalachakra or the Buddhist wheel of life, icons representing reincarnated lamas in wall recesses, rows of prayer wheels, mandalas, stones carved with prayers, thangkas and manis.

Day 1: Arrive Delhi

Arrival to Delhi and check in the hotel for overnight stay in Delhi.

Day 2: Delhi - Leh: Fly

Rest of the day free and for acclimatisation.

After breakfast proceed for Indus Valley monastery tour. We start with a visit to Shey, the ancient capital of Ladakh. The monastery here has a huge gold-gilded statue of Buddha Sakyamuni with a large silver lamp burning in front of the statue. Then we visit Thiksey Gompa, an impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village. The monastery has a beautiful 30 m high gold-plated statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future. Drive further to visit the famous Hemis Gompa, founded in 1630's by Stag-tsang-ras-pa under the royal patronage of Sengge Namgyall. Hemis is one of the largest and richest gompas of Ladakh. The two-day festival of monastic dance in June-July has raised the reputation of Hemis particularly high. The festival is dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava, popularly known as second Buddha and responsible for spreading Buddhism in the Tibetan world. Later we visit the Stok Palace, the Royal residence of the King of Stok & the Museum that has a rich collection of Ancient Ladakhi artefacts including old Thangkas, precious stones, arms and armoury, the Queen’s necklace and the crown of the King of Ladakh among others. Overnight stay at the hotel in Leh.

Day 4: Leh - Likir - Alchi - Lamayuru

After breakfast we drive to Likir and visit Likir gompa situated atop a windy cliff top overlooking the beautiful village of Likir. It was founded in the 12th Century although the present construction dates back to the 18th century as the original one was destroyed by fire. In its courtyard is a yellow-coloured 3 storey high mammoth statue of the Lord Buddha, which was constructed by a resident monk. The top floor has an impressive museum containing old thangkas and weapons used many centuries back.

Then we drive and cross the River Indus and reach Alchi, Ladakh's most loved monastery. Over a century old, its wall paintings are very similar to those of the Tabo gompa in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Unlike other monasteries which are usually on a cliff top or cling to a mountainside, Alchi is at ground level and is nestled in the shade of a garden.

After Alchi we have an option to visit the impressive Ridzong Gompa, reached from the road head after a 30-minute uphill walk. It's arsn impressive monastery well hidden in the lap of the mountains until you're face to face with it. It is situated on the mountainside wedged in between 2 ends of a ridge. It is about 100 years old and the name means 'mountain fort' aptly describing this isolated gompa. It also has a nunnery of female monks also.

Finally we reach Lamayuru monastery, founded by Rinchen Zangpo in the 10th century. This gompa is located amidst the massive mountains. The spectacular setting of this gompa and its renowned collection of carpets, thangkas and frescoes has been attracting many people over a long time. It is believed to be the oldest in central Ladakh.

Day 5: Lamayuru - Kargil: 107 km / 6 hrs

In the morning we visit the Lamayuru monastery to be part of the morning religious ceremony. It's a very soothing and spiritual experience to be there among these warm and friendly monks. Then drive to Kargil and overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 6: Kargil - Rangdum: 130 km / 6-7 hrs

In the morning after breakfast we drive towards Suru valley along Suru River. Enroute we see the mighty twin peaks of Nun & Kun that are among the most challenging peaks in Ladakh. By evening we arrive at Rangdum plains in Zanskar region. Overnight stay in the tents in the picturesque campsite.

Day 7: Rangdum - Padum: 110 km / 6 hrs

In the morning we start and visit the famous Rangdum Monastery perched on a solitary rock in the middle of the valley. After that we drive to Padum, the capital of Zanskar region. By late afternoon we reach Padum and check in at the hotel for the overnight stay.

Day 8 & Day 9: Padum

Visit various monasteries & villages for 2 days. Stay overnight at the hotel in Padum.

Places that can be visited in and around Padum:

We visit the important Monastery of Karsha. Karsha is the largest Gelug-pa monastery in Zanskar which is believed to be founded by the great translator Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo in 10-11th century AD. In the many halls of Karsha one can find some of the best specimens of Mural art. Later drive back to Padum enroute we stop to visit the Kalachakra Gompa where His Holiness Dalai Lama performed Kalachakra initiations.

Sani -Zongkhul

We can drive to Sani village and then to Ating located on the banks of river Zanskar. The jeep is abandoned at Ating and after crossing the bridge start the steady trek to Zongkhul Cave Monastery the founding of which is ascribed to Naropa. Later on the return journey visit the village of Sani then drive back to Padum.

We can explore the Monastery of Thongde situated on rocky outcrop. One of the main attractions is the Gon Khang '' the chambers of the protectors" of the monastery. Explore the other prayer halls of the Gompa. Later explore the village of Thongde.

Drive to northern part of Zanskar valley, Zangla is believed to being ruled still by the king whose Palace stands on hill top Visit the one of the last remaining suspension bridges a remarkable example of primitive engineering. After visit to the Palace, drive further 5-10 minutes to visit the Zangla Nunnery monastery.

Bardan - Pibting

Visit the villages of Bardan, 15 km from Padum, and then visit the Pibiting village. Pibiting village can also be walked down from Padum, which is a short distance. Pibiting is considered to be one of the most interesting villages to be explored for the village life.

Day 10: Padum - Rangdum

Morning drive back to Rangdum. Overnight stay in tented camp.

Day 11: Rangdum - Kargil

Morning we drive back to Kargil, on arrival check in the hotel. Later proceed for a short visit of the town, which has some of the finest examples of Turkish style houses. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 12: Kargil - Leh: 231 km

On our way back to Leh we can visit the Basgo monastery, famous for its Buddha statue. In Leh overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 13: Leh

Day at leisure or option of visiting more monasteries. Overnight stay at Leh.

Day 14: Leh - Delhi: Fly

In the morning transfer to the airport to board the flight to Delhi. Transfer and check in the hotel in Delhi.

Tour Itinerary

Arrive Delhi. Assistance on arrival, transferred to hotel . Rest of the day is a leisure to recover from the flight.

Early this morning, you will be transferred to the domestic airport in Delhi for your trans-Himalayan flight to Leh. Upon arrival, you will be met by your Guide and transferred to your hotel. We recommend you relax and undergo minimal exertion to enable yourseles acclimatize to rarefied air of this remote region ensconced in the high himalayan plateau.

Overnight at Hotel.

After breakfast, your guide will accompany you as you explore the ancient town of Leh on foot. After a couple of hours, return to your hotel for lunch. After lunch you are driven west to visit the Shanti Stupa, inaugurated in 1983 by H.H.Dalai Lama, the peace Pagoda, whose sides are decorated with gilt panels depicting episodes from the life of Buddha, is one of the several monuments errected around India by peace sect of Japanese Buddhists. Following that, you are driven to Sankar Monastery nestled amid the shimmering coppices & terraced fields of Barley.

Sankar monestry: The Gompa (Monastery in local language), contains a formidable collection of miniature stattues of pure gold and ancient paintings(called Thangkas) also done with gold.We return to our hotel in the evening

After breakfast, we visit the Hemis monastry, the biggest and the wealthiest in Ladakh. You walk past the Chortens and the Mani walls to enter the complex through the east gate. From Hemis, you are driven westwards to Thiksey monastry, located on a hilltop with formidable views of the Indus valley. After visiting the interiors of the monestry the tour continues to Shey the former summer palace of the King of Ladakh.

Finally we drive back to Leh to our hotel.

After breakfast, we start our drive to Alchi, 70 kms west of Leh, south of the village of Saspol . On arrival at Uletokpo camp, we check-in and followed with lunch. After lunch, we drive back to visit Alchi village & the monestry. Alchi's large temple complex founded in the 11th century is regarded as one of the most important Buddhist centres in Ladakh and a jewel of monastic skill. You will also have an opportunity to witness villagers using primitive methods to grind the wheat along the road side.

After our visit to the Alchi monastry, we drive back to our campsite.

After early breakfast, we drive towards west to Lamayuru.We visit the Lamayuru Monastery founded, properly called Yung-drung(Swastika) founded in the 11th centuary perched on a spur high above the valley bottom just off the main road, it is one of the most spectacularly picturesque gompas(Gompa means Monastery in local language) in central ladakh, as it descends from the Fa-tula to KhalatsesetLamayuru, properly called Yung-drung(Swastika) is believed to be the oldest in central Ladakh and to have been the holy place of the Bon-chos the advent of Buddhism. Afternoon picnic lunch at the Lamayuru village. After Lunch, explore Lamayuru village on foot, then we drive back to Uletokpo camp.

After a early tea/coffee, we drive to visit Ridzong Monastery. The track to Ridzong leaves the main road along the Indus at Uletokpo, between Saspol and Nyurla and follow the valley of a tributery stream, we leave the vechile and set on foot a kilometer upthe valley to Ridzong Monastery. Ridzong is is the only Nunnery Monastery in Ladakh. After that we descend, to drive back to our campsite, followed with breakfast. After breakfast we start our drive to Leh, enroute visit the Likir Monastery set up on a hill top of a low hill, it was re-founded in the 15th century by the Gelupa Sect(Yellow Sect). After that we continue our drive on the left bank of the Indus river to Leh. Lunch at the hotel.

Afternoon/Evening at leisure.

After breakfast, we drive to Saboo village to see the village life of Ladakh. We visit the Local Buddhist house to see the private chapels and also visit the traditional Kitchen and get a demonstration of preparing Gur Gur tea(Local tea mixed with milk, butter & salt). Afternoon picnic lunch at a local house, then continue to drive back to Leh. Evening free to exlore the local market of foot / at leisure.

After breakfast, we drive to visit the Stok palace, the former residence of the Royal family of Ladakh. We visit the museum in which the family's heirlooms and relics are displayed, a piogant evocation of Ladakh's vanished past as an independent kingdom. Ladakh well known as SOS Village. We visit the Tibetan Handicraft Centre / Tibetan school.

After that we continue our drive to Leh.

We then drive to Choglamsar, which is the largest settlement of Tibetan refugee, Village in Afternoon free to explore/at leisure.

After breakfast, being the last day optional visit to the local market .

After early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport in Leh for your flight to Delhi. Upon arrival in Delhi, you will be met by our representative and transferred to a hotel. Lunch at the hotel.Afternoon at leisure

Delhi Sightseeing Tour
