The singer will embark on the Renaissance World Tour starting in Stockholm, Sweden in May. After a string of shows throughout Europe, she’ll hit Canada and the U.S. in July, and finish on September 27 in New Orleans. This will be Queen Bey’s first series of concerts since the On the Run II Tour with husband Jay-Z in 2018, and her first solo run since the Formation World Tour in 2016.

The shows will be in support of Beyoncé’s seventh studio album, Renaissance, which was released last summer. The album has been lauded by critics and is up for nine awards at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Renaissance’s single “Cuff It” was also one of Time Out’s Best Songs of 2022 .

Please don’t be alarmed and try to remain calm — nearly six years since her last solo trek, Beyoncé is back and (hopefully) heading to a city near you before wrapping her tour this fall. The superstar announced her massive Renaissance world tour back in February, marking Beyoncé’s first global solo tour in support of her seventh album of the same name. With the tour winding down, there’s only a few weeks left to score Beyoncé tickets . Get Beyoncé Tickets on Vivid Seats

With the final month of the Renaissance tour approaching, Beyoncé shared a statement on Instagram that “Virgo Season is upon us.” She continued: “This tour has been such a joy and as we approach the last month, my birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23 – 9.22! We’ll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night. Everybody mirroring each other’s joy. Virgo Season together in the house of chrome. See you there! Your B at RWT.”

Ticket registration and sales for Beyoncé’s tour were previously split into three different groups, and now Beyoncé tickets are on sale for all remaining dates, including on Ticketmaster and Vivid Seats .

Renaissance World Tour 2023 North America Dates

Wondering if Beyoncé is playing a show in your area? Below are the remaining cities the Grammy winner will visit for the 2023 North American leg of the Renaissance tour . Beyoncé previously also added an additional three shows to the tour, including Atlanta (8/14/23), Las Vegas, (8/27/23), and Inglewood, CA (9/4/23).

Not surprisingly, Ticketmaster said it saw a massive demand for the Renaissance tour in a blog on its website. “Fan demand already exceeds the number of tickets available by more than 800% based on the registration numbers in the Group A cities. It is expected that many interested fans may not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply.”

While we won’t give too much away about the Renaissance tour set list (though you’ve likely seen much of it on TikTok), you can hear more about the show in Rolling Stone Music Now ‘s podcast episode . It’s a deep-dive into what fans can expect during the concert. In short, you can likely plan to hear everything from deep cuts like opener “Dangerously in Love,” along with Renaissance tracks like “Alien Superstar,” “Cuff It,” and closer “Summer Renaissance.” Plus: “Love on Top,” “Crazy in Love,” “1+1,” and more.

When Are Beyoncé Renaissance World Tour Tickets On Sale?

According to Ticketmaster at the time, “Beyoncé is distributing tickets in three different Verified Fan sales: BeyHive Presale powered by Ticketmaster Verified Fan; Citi Presale powered by Verified Fan and the General Verified Fan Onsale. Additionally, there will be a Verizon Up Presale. Registration windows vary by city, so check the schedule below and be sure to note when the window closes for the show you’re interested in attending.”

In other words, if you tried to register for Verified Fan presale, you needed to see which group your city was a part of ahead of time. Group A registration was open until Feb. 2, with Group B registration previously scheduled until Feb. 9, and Group C until Feb. 16.

European dates started in May, and Beyoncé embarked on the North American leg of the Renaissance tour over the summer, including stops in Toronto (read our Renaissance tour review ), Los Angeles, Houston, and New Orleans. Though Beyoncé headlined a show in Dubai — her first concert in four years at the time — she didn’t play any songs from Renaissance , Rolling Stone ‘s No. 1 album of 2022 (“the musical highlight of the year”) and a frontrunner at the 65th Grammys .

When Beyoncé dropped Renaissance last summer, Rolling Stone ‘s Mankaprr Conteh wrote that “Beyoncé flung open the doors to a nightclub of her own making, a place where anyone can be the hottest person in the galaxy … the album traverses eras of dance music to conjure the superhuman confidence and deeply human connection of a night out. The thematic triumph of the auteur’s seventh album is this union of the extraordinary and the earthly across it, a duality that lives on the dancefloors Renaissance was inspired by — and in all of us.”

How to Get Beyoncé Tickets With BeyHive Verified Fan Registration

BeyHive Verified Fan Presale started Feb. 6 for those who registered in Group A, followed by Groups B and C.

The first round of the BeyHive presale arrived just one day after Beyoncé made Grammys history on Feb. 5. With 32 wins under her belt, Beyoncé broke the record for the most Grammy Awards in music history, winning the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album for Renaissance .

“I’d like to thank my beautiful husband, my beautiful three children who are at home watching,” Queen Bey said during her acceptance speech. “I’d like to thank the queer community, for your love, and for inventing this genre. God bless you. Thank you so much to the Grammys.”

While Renaissance didn’t win a trophy for Album of the Year , Beyoncé still took home a slew of other awards, including Best R&B Song for “Cuff It,” Best Dance/Electronic Record for “Break My Soul,” and Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa.”

“You changed my life,” Lizzo told Beyoncé during her Grammys acceptance speech for her Record of the Year win. “You sang that gospel medley, and the way you made me feel, I was like, ‘I want to make people feel this way with my music.’ So thank you so much. You clearly are the artist of our lives.”

How to purchase tickets, presale information

Ticketing begins Feb. 6, starting with an exclusive presale to BeyHive members.

There are several presale ticket options for Beyoncé fans. Verified fan registration for North American dates are available on beyonce.livenation.com  and Ticketmaster . Citi cardmembers will have access to a presale via citientertainment.com . Verizon Up members can buy presale tickets at  verizon.com/featured/verizon-up .

You can also find "Register" buttons next to each date on her tour website .

Beyoncé returned to the stage for first time in four years in January

Last month, Beyoncé made her return to the stage and performed at the opening of the Atlantis The Royal hotel in Dubai. Despite the luxury experience, the singer left fans wanting more, as she did not perform any songs from "Renaissance," The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The invitation-only event marked her first concert in more than four years. She last performed at the  Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 event in 2018.

Beyoncé dominates Grammy nominations

The singer's tour announcement comes days ahead of the Grammys where Beyoncé leads the 2023 lineup with nine nominations, including best dance/electronic album ("Renaissance"), best R&B performance ("Virgo’s Groove") and best traditional R&B performance ("Plastic Off the Sofa").

With 28 wins and 88 total career nominations, Beyoncé now ties her husband, rapper Jay-Z , for the most nominations in Grammy history. If Beyoncé picks up four or more awards this year, she will surpass the late Georg Solti for the most Grammy wins of all time. (The Hungarian-born conductor holds the record with 31.)

Beyoncé called out by Monica Lewinsky: over 'Partition' lyric after ableism controversy

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have got "to be the most intense power couple in the history of music," Recording Academy president Harvey Mason Jr. Mason said after the nominations were revealed. "That’s music and Grammy royalty – that’s the royal family."

Their combined 176 nominations are "absolutely a testament to their talent, to their level of excellence, to their work ethic, to their level of greatness over a long period of time. I don’t even know what the next (leading) couple would be, but it’s not anywhere close.”

Beyoncé's 'Break My Soul.' Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero.'  These are the 10 best songs of 2022, ranked.

Beyoncé noticeably was not nominated in any of the music video categories for the Grammys, having not released any album visuals for "Renaissance" since its debut.

Beyoncé's "renaissance" world tour stops in chicago july 22 and 34, by francie swidler • published february 6, 2023 • updated on february 6, 2023 at 8:29 am.

Attention Beyoncé fans: Your first shot at getting tickets to see the most decorated artist in Grammys history during her upcoming "Renaissance" World Tour begins Monday, as the the tour's first presale exclusive to Beyoncé fan club members is set to get underway.

However, many ticket hopefuls won't come away with anything except a spot on the waitlist.

"BeyHive Verified Fan" presale ticketing for select shows including the tour's two Chicago stops begin late Sunday, Ticketmaster said , as some lucky, verified BeyHive members received in their email a "unique access code" to use once Monday's presale began. But most people didn't get one, the ticket company says.

"If you're on the waitlist, you're not alone," Ticketmaster said. "Because registration demand was 8x over ticket inventory, most people are on the waitlist."

"There won't be enough tickets to go around," the post from the ticketing giant continued. "But you still have a shot. If you've registered for other onsales, you still have a chance to be selected based on the lottery-style process."

If you're on the waitlist for the BeyHive Verified Fan Presale for Group A, here's some additional information on what that could mean: pic.twitter.com/xMnIRG4o2i — Ticketmaster (@Ticketmaster) February 6, 2023

In November, Ticketmaster's site crashed during a presale event for Taylor Swift tickets after the company said it was overwhelmed by fans and bot attacks, leaving many people waiting in queues for hours only to lose tickets. This time, the ticket giant says, it's staggering sales rather than releasing tickets for all the dates at once.

What's the Process For Getting Beyoncé Tickets?

"Beyoncé is using Verified Fan to help fans get tickets," Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation says , on a site dedicated to Beyoncé's tour. "Verified Fan requires registration to help filter out buyers looking to resell tickets and create a less crowded ticket shopping experience for fans."

According to Live Nation, all hopeful ticket buyers -- presale or not -- must register with Ticketmaster to become a "Verified Fan." However, as Taylor Swift fans hoping to get tickets to "The Eras Tour" may remember , "registration does not guarantee tickets," Live Nation says, adding that demand is expected to be high.

Read More: Ticketmaster Responds to Beyoncé Tour Concerns After Taylor Swift Ticket Debacle

"We expect there will be more demand than there are tickets available and a lottery-style process will determine which registered Verified Fans receive a unique access code and which are put on the waitlist," the site reads.

Additionally, "Verified Fan" registration deadlines vary by city. However, those deadlines have all passed .

After registering to become a "Verified Fan," Ticketmaster must "authorize" your account, the company says . Users can then expect to receive an email from Ticketmaster confirming that their registration has been recorded.

"This email is to confirm we have received your registration information," one such email obtained by NBC 5 reads. "You’ll receive an email on Friday, February 10 confirming next steps."

However, registering for the "Verified Fan Onsale" does not guarantee access to the sale, the email says. "Since we expect demand to exceed the number of tickets available, some people who register will be put on the waitlist," the email reads.

And, while those who are granted access to the sale may have a better shot at securing tickets, nothing is guaranteed, Ticketmaster stresses.

" Being invited to the Verified Fan Onsale doesn’t guarantee tickets," the email reads. "Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis."

Finally, one day prior to the sale, "Verified Fans" can expect to receive an email that indicates whether they've been invited to the sale, or whether they've been waitlisted, Ticketmaster says.

Beyoncé delivers a powerhouse, out-of-this-world experience at Soldier Field concert

After an hourlong rain delay, the show went on as planned to the delight of nearly 50,000 adoring fans in the first of two weekend shows in chicago..

Beyoncé is the wave of the future. Her Renaissance World Tour proved as much as it descended on Soldier Field Saturday night for the first of two sold-out weekend shows. The 2 1 ⁄ 2 -hour extravaganza was pure escape into an otherworldly existence, perhaps the closest we mere mortals will get to going to the moon.

Full of the singer’s continually evolving progressive music, tons of sci-fi realism, android-human blurred lines, and an abundance of advanced technology that sets the bar for every other stadium tour to come, the road trek is also a rebirth of the megastar herself, seven long years after her last solo tour in 2016.

Now in her 40s and with more than 100 million records sold and a record-setting 32 Grammys, Beyonce is edging ever-closer to the throne left vacant by Queen Tina Turner, to whom she paid loving tribute with a cover of “River Deep, Mountain High,” asking the crowd, “Was she your hero, too?”

And her star power only gets brighter as her music continues to evolve, from earlier themes of love and sexuality to a platform of self-empowerment, race and the Black experience, feminism and — with her latest album — a queer celebration. The disco-fueled “Renaissance,” her record-breaking seventh No. 1 album, released almost a year ago to the day, is dedicated to her inspirational gay Uncle Johnny, to whom she paid homage several times during the night, most notably on the blistering “Heated.”

After an hourlong rain delay that pushed the start of the extravaganza to 9 p.m. and threatened the disintegration of the amazing costumes, makeup and hair that scores of devoted fans put so much work into, Beyoncé finally appeared, ascending on a platform from beneath the stage and eliciting ear-piercing screams with her first few words, “Chicago, I love you.” (The sentiment echoed the reaction to an announcement minutes prior that Queen Bey had given $100,000 to several small, Black-owned businesses in Chicago through her BeyGOOD foundation.)

Divided into seven stylized segments, the show ran through every track on the new album, complete with dazzling high-fashion costumes, and set changes that truly took a village of crew members to rotate.

The first section, “Opening Act” (yes, she was her own opener), was Beyoncé at her most ethereal, dressed in a feather-decorated ballgown and sitting atop a silver piano as she belted out R&B numbers from early in her career, including the Destiny’s Child track “Dangerously in Love” and “Flaws and All” (from the 2006 album “B’Day”).

Beyoncé triumphantly stopped the rain in Chicago tonight with her powerful first show of two in The Windy City. The rain ended just as she took the stage with close to 48,000 fans thunderously showing her their appreciation.

The rain gave way to clear skies in Chicago Saturday night, allowing for the first of two Beyonce weekend concerts at Soldier Field.

“Opening Act” was also one of the few parts where Beyonce talked directly to the crowd, noticing the effort they put in to their homages to the Queen’s style. “How do you all look so good? You look like you planned your outfits months ago. I bet you got up at 8 to get ready,” she said to the legions dressed up in rhinestone cowboy hats, glitter-bombed dresses and unitards matching the ones the singer has debuted on the tour.

As much as her show was an incredible display of theatrics, Beyoncé never let her powerful voice waver, showing she’s still got one of the best set of pipes in the business.

As the night progressed, so did the energy and unbelievable choreography, as well as the thematic exploration, most of it centering on sci-fi, Afrofuturism and metamorphosis — a dose of “Metropolis” meets “Ex Machina.”

Beyoncé delivers a powerhouse performance filled with super high-tech wizardry, talented backup dancers and dazzling costumes on Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago.

In the beginning of the “Renaissance” segment, she broke out of a metallic costume shell to deliver “I’m That Girl.” For “Black Parade” (part of the “Opulence” section), she rode a chrome military tank onto the stage catwalk, finishing the song with her eyes closed, fist raised in the air in a gesture of Black pride as many in the crowd did the same. (This is generally the section where Beyoncé’s star child Blue Ivy Carter appears, though she was noticeably absent on this night.)

During the “Motherboard” segment, Beyoncé paid tribute to Chicago house music (and later the choreography did likewise).

In “Church Girl” (during the “Anointed” segment), Beyoncé and her backup vocalists wore monochrome dresses that literally changed colors, with robot arms spray-painting them to look like stained glass.

It was just one of the ways advanced tech became a full-on supporting character in the show, alongside massive video walls, drone cameras and fisheye lenses that made the whole night seem like it was a Super Bowl halftime show on the Chicago Bears’ home turf. Her gravity-defying dancers and incredibly talented backup singers and house band (guitar, drums, keys, bass and full horn section) got their due in dedicated solos during set-change interludes as a giant disco ball hung overhead, giving off Studio 54 vibes.

As the show wrapped up with Beyoncé hooked up to high wires and effortlessly gliding over the audience, she had one last benevolent message to impart: “I hope you felt inspired, seen and loved and I hope you take that love everywhere you go.”

Beyonce tickets demand far outnumbers supply, leaving fans nervous after last Ticketmaster debacle

Karen Jordan Image

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Beyonce's Renaissance World Tour ticket presales started Monday. She's making two stops at Soldier Field on July 22 and 23, and her fans want nothing more than to see Queen Bey.

But the memory of Ticketmaster's Taylor Swift meltdown is still fresh and fans are nervous.

Susan McCallum wants to go to the concert with her 16-year-old daughter Nyah, who's a drummer and a big fan of Beyonce. But she said the effort to get the tickets may just break her soul.

McCallum is already registered as a verified fan, but that doesn't guarantee tickets. In fact, Ticketmaster said the demand for Beyonce tickets far outnumbers the supply, in some cases by 800%, so many people are on the waitlist.

"We're not going to be able to find ticket to go to her concert. Either that, or they're outrageously priced beyond what my budget can handle," McCallum worried.

Ticketmaster's site crashed during a November presale event for Taylor Swift tickets after the company said it was overwhelmed by fans and bot attacks.

The meltdown prompted a Senate judiciary hearing in January, analyzing competition issues in the live music business.

Concert promoter Jerry Mickelson of Chicago-based Jam Productions was called a witness. He said scalpers are advertising tickets for sale before shows go on sale, driving up prices and putting fans at a disadvantage.

"Speculative ticketing is unscrupulous and shouldn't be allowed but it's been going on a long time with high demand shows," he said.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee sent a warning to Ticketmaster before Beyonce sales started tweeting a message from its official account saying, "We're watching."

Beyoncé tour sales are off to a smoother start. What does that mean for Ticketmaster?

An illustration of the Ticketmaster website from 2022. The ticketing giant has come under renewed scrutiny from music fans and lawmakers in recent months.

All eyes are on Ticketmaster as the first tickets for the North American leg of Beyoncé's Renaissance tour go on sale. And the ticketing giant appears to be feeling the heat — and making some changes — after its widely panned Taylor Swift presale in November.

Ticketmaster announced last week that it would be dividing cities into three groups, each with its own staggered registration deadlines and presale dates, in addition to using its Verified Fan system to try to minimize bots. (It ended up closing registration for the last two groups on Sunday, citing outsize demand.)

There was much buzz within and beyond the BeyHive ahead of the first round of presale on Monday. Fans flooded Twitter with prayers and memes, while the Senate Judiciary Committee — which held a hearing into competition in the ticketing industry last month — tweeted a warning : "We're watching."

Beyoncé's Renaissance tour is Ticketmaster's next big test. Fans are already stressed

Beyoncé's Renaissance tour is Ticketmaster's next big test. Fans are already stressed

Ticketmaster itself sought to temper fans' expectations , explaining in advance how the ticketing process would work and warning that many would likely end up empty-handed because demand exceeded the number of available tickets by more than 800% for Group A cities alone.

"It is expected that many interested fans may not be able to get tickets because demand drastically exceeds supply," it cautioned on Friday.

And the company kept communication going as the first round of tickets for Group A — with cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, Toronto and Washington, D.C. — went on sale on Monday.

It tweeted out schedule reminders , status updates and waitlist announcements throughout the afternoon, periodically reassuring fans that "queues remain secure." It also responded to some users' questions ("Verified Fan does not measure how big a fan you are") and retweeted several triumphant posts of fans who had managed to snag tickets.

Ticketmaster faces a big test: Beyoncé's Renaissance tour

Ticketmaster also published a blog post detailing steps it is taking in the "arms race against abusive ticket scalping." Among them, it said, it had "already built new defenses that are working against past tactics" and would have engineers "standing by in real time to monitor attempted attacks and build new defenses if needed."

Monday's sales appeared to go relatively smoothly, or at least without reports of any major crashes. Still, it remains to be seen how the sales planned for the rest of the month will turn out, or whether these changes are enough to appease critics who accuse Ticketmaster of acting as a monopoly and want to see it broken up.

Carolyn Sloane, a labor economist at the University of California, Riverside — whose "Rockonomics" class is currently studying the Ticketmaster drama — says while Ticketmaster's approach to the Renaissance tour is a step in the right direction, these changes alone won't solve the problems we're seeing.

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

The Senate's Ticketmaster hearing featured plenty of Taylor Swift puns and protesters

Sloane tells NPR that external pressures like political oversight and the threat of enforcement are mirroring the kind of pressure that Ticketmaster (which controls more than 70% of the market for ticketing and live events) would face in a more competitive landscape, and that's forcing it to invest more in things like communication with customers.

But she says it's not realistic to think that there will be much change in the market without some sort of structural remedy (in the form of something like forced divestment or an updated consent decree from the U.S. Justice Department).

"Absent enforcement activity, you're probably just going to see some kind of status quo with how the ticketing market looks right now," Sloane says — adding that in a perfect world there would be less consolidation in all parts of the music industry, including streaming.

Lucky fans say tickets were worth the stress

The opening day of ticket sales seemed to go more smoothly for Renaissance than Swift's The Eras Tour, though it wasn't without complaints.

Some Twitter users accused Ticketmaster of using dynamic pricing (though the company tweeted that prices hadn't fluctuated during the sale and were instead showing up as ranges for available tickets), and there were reports of fans having issues getting companion tickets for accessibility purposes.

Still, there didn't appear to be tech issues or traffic peaks big enough to force Ticketmaster to pause or postpone sales, as was the case in November.

Fans who were able to get tickets on Monday told NPR that the experience was stressful but not as harrowing as they had feared.

Dozens of Taylor Swift fans sue Ticketmaster in the wake of its ticket sale fiasco

Jared Moses, a 28-year-old based in Memphis, prepared by reading Ticketmaster's instructions and tips from Beyoncé fan pages on social media.

He wasn't actually too worried before his presale opened, because he saw posts from lots of people who had been waitlisted and figured he was one of a relatively manageable number of people with access — plus he hoped that Ticketmaster had learned from its past mistakes.

"A lot of the Beyoncé fans ... were joking, like, 'Yeah let's just let the Swifties figure this out, so it'll be better by the time Beyoncé tickets come out,' " he said, referring to the Eras tour debacle.

James Barringer, a college senior, said he set the mood by listening to what he described Beyoncé's most iconic live performances, like those at the Super Bowl and the Video Music Awards. He entered the virtual waiting room at 2 p.m. around number 1,600 in line, and was able to get his tickets (for a New York show in July) by 2:20 p.m.

"So it only took 20 minutes, which was pretty amazing," he said. "But I had logged on quite early and was just sort of waiting around all afternoon, anxious to get tickets."

Barringer was cognizant of the pressure on Ticketmaster to deliver, calling Monday a big day both for Beyoncé fans and the company. And he hopes "the good times keep rolling for Ticketmaster," for everyone's sake.

"The BeyHive will rip the site down, like the BeyHive will get Congress to finally take action if action needs to be taken," he added.

Destinie Brooks, who is based in Chicago, says she's been researching social media threads by people who have managed to get high-demand concert tickets in the past, but she's also keeping her expectations low ahead of her presale date this weekend.

That said, she acknowledges that presale is a lottery — with no regard for how much Beyoncé merch or music she's bought in the past — and there's only so much she can do.

"So at this point I'm just remembering the tips, I'm mentally preparing to be in a certain headspace on Saturday like an hour before the tickets drop, and it's just nothing but prayers," she said. "Just prayers."

The case for why non-Bey fans should care

Sloane, the economics professor, says it's worth looking at the music industry through an economic lens even though it's relatively small in terms of its revenue and political influence. She cites two main reasons:

"One, kind of for the emotional presence that it has in our lives, it makes sense to explore it," she says. "But beyond that, a lot of what we see happening in the music industry does reflect what is happening in the economy writ large and also kind of leads the trends of what we're seeing in the greater economy."

Understanding the state of antitrust enforcement in the United States

Sloane says Ticketmaster has done good things for the industry, like creating the modern infrastructure for computerized ticketing and being the connector between fans and venues. But, like many, she says it lacks competitive incentives that would push it to improve things like technology and communications.

Now — after botched sales, public pushback, reputational challenges and the threat of antitrust enforcement — she sees Ticketmaster taking action in real time, whether that's through staggering its presales or sending an executive to testify in front of Congress. Still, she says that's no substitute for competitive pressure.

"In the absence of that competitive pressure, you know, we might see some other unsavory activity in the future or not kind of fully efficient activity in the future," she says. "And so that's always going to kind of be a question. But this is not just hanging over Ticketmaster. And it's not just hanging over the live event space of the music industry. It's over every part of the music industry."

Ticket scalpers: The real ticket masters

The Indicator from Planet Money

Ticket scalpers: the real ticket masters.

Sloane says every part of the music industry is "extremely consolidated," with the exception of music publishing, and she thinks that will continue to be an issue regardless of what happens with Ticketmaster.

Plus there's only so much Ticketmaster can do to meet the outrageous demand for certain concerts, which she says can be explained in part by years of demand pent up during the pandemic and the fact that younger consumers are increasingly experience-driven.

But even if getting tickets for big-name performances continues to be high stakes and high stress, Sloane says there's reason for hope.

"People should get out there and see shows that are not just stadium shows," she says. "There's a lot of great theater shows and local venue shows that you can get tickets for and have that experience of going to a great show and maybe discovering some new music. So in that sense, there's always going to be stuff to go to. It might just be more expensive to go to the top 1% of performer shows."

Lil Rel Howery 's proposal last year to his now-fiancée, Dannella Lane, at a Beyoncé  concert can be described with just about every adjective possible: lovely, sweet, romantic, emotional. But some may be surprised to find out that the kind gesture -- of Bey helping him get on the jumbo screen to execute the proposal -- was a last-minute move.

The 44-year-old actor-comedian spoke to Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner during ET's Bahamas Week at Baha Mar Resort and shared that the proposal at the final show of Beyoncé's three-night run at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium last September "was last-minute planning."

"And, really, shout-out to Miss Tina [Knowles] for helping me do everything," the actor added. "And shout-out to JAY-Z and shout-out to Beyoncé. It was her birthday and she didn't have to do that."

Howery said that with the trio helping him pull off the magical proposal, his calling card has expired when it comes to calling in favors.

"You know, how you be like, 'Imma stop asking for favors?' After that, I think I'm out of favors," Howery quipped.

The Vacation Friends 2 star chronicled the proposal in a video that begins with him holding a Tiffany box. He pulls out the engagement ring and kisses it. The scene then cuts to the couple enjoying Bey's concert, before the couple is shown on the screen. Howery gets down on bended knee, pops the question and she says yes.

Months after the proposal, Howery told ET that Lane was so excited about being a fiancée that she wanted to leave and get the celebration started.

"We didn't finish the concert," Howery said. "Soon as I proposed to her, she didn't even care about Beyoncé no more. She was like, 'Can we leave?'"

Howery, who is promoting his latest project, Reunion , is at the Bahamas with Lane. He teased about having possibly tied the knot. But in all seriousness, he said the idea of getting married in the Bahamas "was a real conversation" but "the kids would be really mad about that if we did that."

Howery has a 14-year-old son, and Lane, a talent manager, has four daughters.

The actor-comedian already has a lot on his plate. He'll launch the inaugural Whats Funny Comedy Festival in Chicago, running from Sept. 16-22. Tickets go on sale July 8. Howery is teaming up with his longtime friend and entrepreneur, Knowledge Beckom (they met in 2006), for this venture slated to go down at several Chi-Town locations.

"We decided to put this comedy festival on in Chicago. This is a big deal. This is for the comedians. This is for the game. We're gonna have a great panel and we're gonna have great shows," he said. "And then I'm taping my special. The last show of the special is me taping my special that I'm self-financing, self-producing and directing on my own. I'm excited about it."

Howery's film,  Reunion , is also out Friday on digital. The Chris Nelson-directed comedy stars Howery, Billy Magnussen, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock, Nina Dobrev and Chace Crawford. The film is about a group of snowbound former classmates, gathered together for their high school reunion, who uncover a murder and scramble to identify the killer among them.

"This movie is hysterical," said Howery, who plays Ray Hammond, a former high school mascot. "We wanted to do a murder mystery and it was actually really, really, really funny and this one is really funny, but it's also very mysterious. You’re not gonna know who did it and honestly I produced this, too. I'm telling you, this is chef's kiss, amazing cast, great director, Chris Nelson. Y'all gonna love this movie."

Reunion is out on digital Friday.

Fifty years ago, georgia tech hosted 11 live music shows by national acts, including eight eventual rock & roll hall of fame inductees. press play on our 1974 playlists on spotify, youtube, or apple music, and follow a trail of historic press clips, photos, and firsthand accounts from these concerts — for thousands of local music fans, often their first, or only, encounter with georgia tech..

Listen on Spotify

1974 was not the first year Georgia Tech held concerts on campus, and certainly not the last, but it’s arguably the most historic.

A remarkable nine-month stretch 50 years ago included Chicago; the Doobie Brothers; Earth, Wind & Fire; Kool & The Gang; Lynyrd Skynyrd; Traffic; and Yes — and arena rockers KISS were a show-stealing, opening act here.

The steel dome, open floor, and 8,600-person capacity made the Alexander Memorial Coliseum (since renovated and renamed the Hank McCamish Pavilion) one of Atlanta’s largest indoor venues before The Omni opened downtown in 1972. As with many mid-20th-century arenas, Tech’s Coliseum had no air conditioning, and all tickets were general admission “festival seating.” When the gates opened, attendees rushed for the best standing spaces or seats and often stayed put through the encore.

The Walrus , an alternative newspaper out of the University of Illinois, dubbed the Coliseum the “world’s largest echo chamber” in 1974. “It was loud, but no one there was worried about sound quality — we were there to have a good time,” recalled David Dean, who traveled with his brother from South Georgia to the Tech campus in November 1974 to see Black Oak Arkansas, fronted by the wild, flamboyant Jim “Dandy” Mangrum.

That 70s Show

While a 19-year-old student at Valdosta State University, Dean learned about the show in Atlanta from columnist Scott Cain of the Atlanta Constitution . Long before bands announced tours on social media or apps, fans pored over concert listings and ads in city newspapers, university papers like The Technique , and independent, countercultural media such as Creative Loafing and The Great Speckled Bird . Buying tickets meant lining up early at venue box offices or record stores such as Mother’s Music and Peaches Records.

Steve Howe of Yes

Tech students paid $5.50 (about $34.50 in 2024 dollars) to see progressive rock band Yes, the first act in the 1974 run of shows. Sponsored by the Georgia Tech Concert Committee (a precursor to today’s Student Center Programs Council), the Yes concert was advertised in The Technique , and to the broader community in alternative papers.

Self-described “rock and roll band with horns” Chicago, Motown-rock blenders Rare Earth (with Kool & The Gang), and English rockers Traffic headlined shows in March and April.

Ned Barbre of Woodstock, Georgia, attended three shows at Tech in ‘74, including Traffic, the Doobie Brothers, and Skynyrd. “First time I’d ever been to the Alexander Coliseum was to see those shows, so I didn’t know what to expect,” he said, fondly recalling the experience of buying tickets. “Standing in line at the record store was a party in itself, meeting a bunch of people with similar interests.”

Philip Auslander , professor of popular music history and performance studies in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, shared his perspective on this run. “The programming during this year was very coherent, and covered a lot of the era’s musical ground,” he said. “How come we don’t have concerts like these at Georgia Tech anymore?”

Wayne Bruce of Hydra

Larger-market concert promoters — including Los Angeles-based Concerts West and New York-based Howard Stein — brought some national acts to Tech. But the person most responsible for connecting the campus to classic rock was “the unofficial mayor of Atlanta music,” Alex Cooley. He briefly attended Georgia State University and the University of Georgia on his path to becoming one of the most notable promoters in the Southeast, starting with the Atlanta International Pop Festival in 1969. His company began contracting with major performers for Atlanta venues in 1970, and in March 1974, Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom venue opened at the Georgian Terrace Hotel on Peachtree Street.

The last month of the spring semester included several Cooley Inc.-promoted performances at what local ads called the “Ga. Tech Coliseum.” Hard rockers Blue Öyster Cult, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, and Georgia-based, southern rock band Hydra played May 4. Kool & The Gang returned on May 5 as a top-billed act, delivering an R&B showcase with Eddie Kendricks and the Bar-Kays. The Doobie Brothers performed top-40 hits like China Grove and Listen to the Music on May 11, at the peak of their popularity. Earth, Wind & Fire rounded out the May shows, along with comedian Richard Pryor and psychedelic soul group the Chambers Brothers.

Augusta, Georgia, native Ken Smith attended Georgia Tech on an athletics scholarship and experienced the Yes, Chicago, and Doobie Brothers shows during this time. “The Doobies show was on the day of, or after, the spring football game. I remember a lot of pyrotechnics and a great show,” he said.

The end of the school year came with a pause for shows at Alexander Memorial Coliseum, but the music scene a few blocks from campus stayed hotter than the weather. Summer nights at Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom included Aerosmith, Kansas, Rush, Rory Gallagher, and a brand-new foursome from New York, clad in leather, platform boots, and face makeup, called KISS. “They were almost like our house band in ‘74. Atlanta audiences took to KISS very early, and they became one of Atlanta’s favorite bands,” Cooley recalled in Nothin’ to Lose: The Making of KISS, 1972-1975 .

Peter Cetera of Chicago

Shortly after the fall semester started, fans packed the Coliseum for Lynyrd Skynyrd, REO Speedwagon, and Hydra. Touring on the strength of their massive sophomore album Second Helping , the Florida band moved from opening for the Allman Brothers Band in June 1974 to the lead act in just a few months, with Cooley’s fervent backing. Just a year prior, the group opened for Little Feat at Landis Field, near the current location of the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. That September, the crowd was there for Skynyrd.

Attendee Ned Barbre recalled the scene as he and fellow fans waited outside the gates, “There was a long line to get into the Coliseum, and all the people waiting in line rushed in at the same time. I remember everybody just having a really good time, in anticipation of the bands coming out to play. It was over the top.”

The Georgia Tech show was cited in a story of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rise to fame in the Oct. 24, 1974, issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Author Tom Dupree described the crowd’s response to the song Sweet Home Alabama : “The electricity almost became visible, and the entire Coliseum exploded in a triumphant roar,” he wrote.

Folk/pop duo Seals and Crofts brought their Summer Breeze through campus on Nov. 16. The following week, Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas were billed as headliners for the final show at Alexander Memorial Coliseum — but coverage by the Atlanta Journal and Creative Loafing led with the opening act.

Philip Auslander

Teenagers David and Bill Dean (along with much of the crowd) were shocked and thrilled by openers KISS, who returned to Atlanta after releasing their second LP of 1974, Hotter Than Hell . “These Kabuki-ed, demon gargoyles assaulted our senses,” said David Dean, who became a lifelong fan on the spot.

KISS bassist Gene Simmons recalled in the band’s autobiography, “Black Oak had this theatrical curtain behind them. I spit fire, but that night — it was 10 feet high and it accidentally caught their curtain on fire.” A series of rare images by photographer Tom Hill captured the early-era energy of the New York rockers on stage.

Auslander, author of Performing Glam Rock: Gender and Theatricality in Popular Music (2006), noted, “It’s interesting that KISS was lumped in as a glam act. They certainly had a different take on glam than what was happening in the U.K. They’ve had an enormous legacy — any big-ticket concert like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé is now an intensely theatrical event — well beyond what one might consider a concert to be. I think KISS, along with David Bowie and others, deserves some of the credit for the move toward theatricality and self-awareness of persona in the performance of popular music across multiple genres.”

Gene Simmons spitting fire

Nine months after the sold-out show at Tech, Yes played at The Omni Nov. 30 for more than 16,000 fans. The next night, rock icon David Bowie performed the final show of his Diamond Dogs tour at the same arena — and within a year of their Fall 1974 shows, KISS and Lynyrd Skynyrd would each return to Atlanta as headliners at The Omni.

Yes concert at Alexander Coliseum

Throughout the 1970s, Tech would continue to host many of the decade’s most prominent bands and artists at Alexander Memorial Coliseum and Bobby Dodd Stadium. The Dog Day Afternoon festival in 1977 and Alex Cooley’s Champagne Jam concerts in 1978 and 1979 brought massive, sweaty crowds of music fans to campus for acts including Atlanta Rhythm Section, Bob Seger, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, Heart, The Cars, and Aerosmith.

The Georgia Tech Athletics Association has continued to open its facilities for music promoters in years since, and Tech has hosted Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Ludacris, Big Boi, and the Rolling Stones (twice!). “We are approached periodically about hosting external events, including concerts featuring popular acts,” an Athletics spokesperson said. “We are proud to provide great entertainment opportunities for the Georgia Tech community and are always looking to drive revenue that can help us provide additional resources for our student-athletes.” Most recently, Athletics welcomed thousands of Yellow Jacket supporters and music fans for the Helluva Block Party series of pregame concerts on North Avenue.

Five decades on, many of the bands whose sounds reverberated within the metal rafters of Alexander Memorial Coliseum are revered by millions. Auslander explained why he thinks the popular music of the 1970s persists. “Today, there are more shared musical tastes and experiences across generations than in the past. Youth in the 1970s mostly rejected the music and culture of their parents — now, we see parents and their children listening to the same music and going to concerts together,” he said.

Although his football experience was cut short due to injury, Ken Smith studied building construction, industrial management, and mechanical engineering at Tech and ran a successful HVAC company in the Augusta area. Over the past 50 years, Smith has seen the Doobie Brothers live more than 30 times, as well as Chicago and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

And Ned Barbre has continued returning to the Tech campus for concerts, including Pink Floyd, Jimmy Buffett, Arlo Guthrie, and the Stones.

Having experienced more than 40 KISS concerts from 1974 through the band’s farewell tour, David Dean said, “I will always remember that first show at Georgia Tech.”

Chiles is Team USA's hype woman; Beyoncé is hers

"I'll be the hype woman like I always am," Chiles said of her approach to Paris.

Throughout these trials, Chiles rallied her teammates, running from one corner of the floor to the other to cheer them on ahead of each tumbling pass.

Who hypes the hype woman? It's Beyoncé, hands down.

"If she's a queen, I'm a queen," Chiles said of her idol.

Biles excited to have husband's support in Paris

Julia Jester

Reporting from Minneapolis

After a crowd-free Tokyo Olympics due to Covid restrictions, Biles is grateful that her husband, Jonathan Owens, will be cheering her on in Paris.

"He’ll be there, yes," she said. "For just a short little time."

Biles said the Chicago Bears are granting Owens, their safety, a couple of days off from training camps to support her at the Olympics.

"I think it's super exciting that we get to be in each other's elements and supporting each other's dreams and goals," Biles said. "It’s these memories that we make that we'll never get back. So any time we can show up for one another and support, we just get super excited because our schedules don’t align that much."

Lee calls Paris a 'redemption tour' and shares her Olympic wishlist

After securing her second Olympic berth, Lee told reporters that Paris will be "kind of like a redemption tour" with four Tokyo team members returning to the Games.

"I’m excited to go back out there with the girls and really just see what we bring to the table," Lee said. "I think this time around, we’re so much more mature and know what we can do and what we can’t do."

In addition to a team gold, Lee shared what's on her personal Paris wishlist. "I want to make all-around finals," she said. "I want to be in the top three for the bars final, and I really want a beam gold."

"I feel like I always make the final and then I always mess up. ... It's so annoying," Lee said, laughing.

Biles on finding her 'why'

"My why is nobody is forcing me to do it," Biles said after the trials. "I wake up every day and choose to grind in the gym and to come out here and perform for myself, just to remind myself that I can still do it."

Success to Biles, though, is "what she makes it."

"I feel like right now, I've been successful," Biles said. "Competing at Olympic Trials and making the Paris Olympic team ... it's what I make it."

Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and more named to U.S. Olympic gymnastics team

Hezly Rivera, Joscelyn Roberson, Suni Lee, Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles and Leanne Wong pose after being selected for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Women's Gymnastics Team.

Simone Biles will be joined in Paris this summer by Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera.

The team was selected at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials in Minneapolis tonight after two days of competition. With four returning Tokyo Olympians, it is the oldest and most decorated U.S. Olympic women’s gymnastics team in history.

Biles, 27, will be the oldest female American gymnast to compete at the Olympics in 72 years.

She secured an automatic spot on the Paris team by finishing first in the all-around, flanked by Lee and Chiles. The balance beam was treacherous tonight, with falls from all three top finishers, including Biles, the reigning world champion.

Therapy is 'kind of religious' for Biles

Rebecca Cohen

After clinching her third Olympic berth, Biles credited "being in a good mental spot" with her grand achievement.

"Seeing my therapist every Thursday is kind of religious for me, so that's why I'm here today," Biles said.

She said she "knew I wasn't done" after the Tokyo Games, when she withdrew from all but one of the event finals. But, she added, "I knew I'd be back" for the Paris games.

She said it’s important for her to be a mentor to the younger girls on the team, "because I’ve been in their exact same spot so I know exactly how they’re feeling."

In a later team interview, Biles said: "I used to call Aly [Raisman] 'Grandma,' and I’ve surpassed that … and I’m going to take care of them in Paris."

Girl power on full display at the final night of trials

After the eighth rotation came to a close, all of the women vying for the Olympic team tonight came together for a hands-in moment to cheer on Team USA — and one another.

Confetti and tears fall

We officially have a women's Olympic team. Confetti and tears are falling in the Target Center.

Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Suni Lee celebrate after being selected for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Women's Gymnastics Team.

Roberson and Wong are alternates

Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong will travel to Paris as alternates. Two additional alternates will be announced later.

The Olympic team is ...

Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera

Shannon Miller and Carly Patterson to announce Olympic team

Shannon Miller, a seven-time Olympic medalist, and Carly Patterson, the 2004 Olympic all-around champion, will announce the 2024 women's Olympic team.

Chants of 'USA!'

The crowd is chanting "USA" as it awaits an Olympic team.

Biles is the oldest female U.S. Olympic gymnast since the ’50s

At 27 years old, Biles will be the oldest female gymnast representing the U.S. at the Olympic Games since the 1950s.

If she gets a gold medal in the women's all-around, she'll be the oldest to do it in 72 years, after the Soviet Union’s   Maria Gorokhovskaya got the gold at age 30 in 1952.

She could also become the oldest American woman to win an Olympic gymnastics medal in 76 years, the oldest American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in gymnastics after Aly Raisman got two in in 2016, and potentially the oldest woman to earn an Olympic gold medal in 60 years.

Who won the battle for the fifth spot?

Rivera, Sumanasekera, Roberson and Wong were the top contenders for the fifth spot ahead of today's competition.

Rivera finished fifth in the all-around and won the balance beam, so she has the edge when it comes to the numbers.

However, Olympic selection can be unpredictable. It will ultimately be up to the selection committee to decide whether to take Rivera, who is not only young but also relatively inexperienced, to Paris.

The top five all-around finishers

  • Biles 117.225
  • Lee 111.675
  • Chiles 111.425
  • Carey 111.350
  • Rivera 111.150

Anything can happen in gymnastics. That's where Olympic alternates come in.

After a slate of injuries plagued top contenders Jones, DiCello and Blakely leading into Olympic trials, four of the five spots on the women's team roster appear to be locked in — leaving several once-wild-card gymnasts vying for just one place on the official Paris 2024 squad.

But the two traveling alternate slots could be just as, if not more, consequential for Team USA.

Less than a month ago, Blakely and DiCello were standing next to Biles on the national championships podium. In the past week, both ruptured their Achilles tendons, dashing their Paris dreams.

In gymnastics, anything can happen.

Nothing highlights that more than when Biles withdrew from all but one event final at the Tokyo Olympics. MyKayla Skinner and Jade Carey sprang into action, each winning individual event medals on vault and floor, respectively.

Though Skinner and Carey did not compete in the team final, if a gymnast were injured in the lead-up to Paris before the start of competition, one of the traveling alternates could be America's only hope.

As Hezly Rivera, Tiana Sumanasekera, Leanne Wong, Kaliya Lincoln and Joscelyn Roberson battle it out for the final official spot, the selection committee may consider the alternate selections as an equally consequential piece of the team puzzle.

On the men's side, a computer program used math to determine the five-man team that would compete in Paris, disappointing some fans when Shane Wiskus was left off the team after he placed third with one of the best meets of his life.

But while a computer determined the roster, humans on the selection committee hand-selected Wiskus and Khoi Young as alternates, knowing they would be strong competitors should either have to step in.

The clock starts now

The Olympic selection committee is now deliberating. It has about 20 minutes to reach a decision.

That's why Carey's an Olympic champ

The reigning Olympic gold medalist on floor, Jade Carey, was the perfect anchor for these trials.

She hit a stellar routine for a 14.150.

See you in Paris, Simone!

Simone Biles has mathematically clinched an automatic spot on the Paris Olympic team, scoring 117.225 across both days.

She is the first American female gymnast since Dominique Dawes to make three Olympic teams.

Simone Biles waves to fans on the final night of the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Gymnastics Trials.

A teary Chiles sticks the landing

Chiles had some negative momentum going into the final rotation, but she turned it around and then some.

She danced to Beyoncé and hit her tumbling passes like a pro, scoring a 14.100 on floor.

Chiles must hit floor

Chiles seemed like a lock for her second Olympics after Friday, but after her fall on beam and a world-class performance from Rivera, she could be in trouble.

The fall on beam matters more for Chiles than it does for Lee or Biles, whose other events are able to compensate more for one poor routine. Chiles is heading to floor exercise, where she is capable of greatness.

Rivera has done all she can

Coming into these trials, Rivera was contending for an alternate position at best. Now, she could be going to her first Olympic Games.

She gave a lights-out performance tonight, scoring a 56.325 in the all-around. The work is done; it's a waiting game for her and her Olympic dreams.

Therapy dog Beacon is Team USA's MVP

A 4-year-old golden retriever named Beacon is here to support Team USA after a tough week in Minneapolis.

He is USA Gymnastics' first official therapy dog and even wears "Goodest Boy" credentials around his neck.

Beacon the emotional support dog

"Thank god for Beacon," Suni Lee said in an Instagram post .

She competed through tears in the first rotation Friday, successfully landing a precarious double-twisting Yurchenko after witnessing back-to-back injuries on the skill. She watched Jones injure her knee and her close friend and roommate, DiCello, rupture her Achilles performing the vault. After the meet, Beacon roamed the competition floor, comforting Lee and the other athletes after a stressful start to trials. Mental health professionals will also be onsite after the Olympic team is announced, according to USA Gymnastics.

Lee finishes strong on vault

Today hasn't been Suni Lee's best day, but she will still have a strong all-around score and is in an excellent position to return to the Olympics.

She landed her vault with her feet slightly staggered to protect her wrapped ankle from injury and scored a 14.100, her best vault score all year.

Biles could clinch automatic Olympic spot

If Biles performs well on the floor exercise, she will finish first in the all-around and mathematically secure her ticket to Paris.

Simone Biles competes in the floor exercise at the U.S. Olympic Team Gymnastics Trials.

Chiles joins Lee and Biles with beam fall

The top three all-around gymnasts have all had falls on beam now, with Chiles coming off at the end of the third rotation.

That makes Rivera's case for an Olympic spot quite strong. She has the highest score of the night so far on beam, an event on which the U.S. is suddenly looking unstable.

Sumanasekera and Rivera's rivalry continues

After Rivera's world-class beam routine in the last rotation, Sumanasekera performed a clean set in response. However, her 13.950 will fall short of Rivera's score.

Rivera performed on floor shortly after and stumbled out of her last tumbling pass. That will keep things interesting heading into the last rotation.

Dominique Dawes on paving the way for Biles

Tonight, Biles is expected to become the first American female gymnast since Dominique Dawes to be named to three Olympic teams. At her first Olympic trials in 1992, she was the first Black gymnast to ever qualify.

"To see women of color dominating the sport of gymnastics 32 years later definitely gives me reason to at least know that the sport is becoming a little bit more inclusive," Dawes said in an interview with NBC News yesterday.

Dawes was a member of the "Magnificent Seven" team that won gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, as well as the 1992 and 2000 medal-winning teams. The pressure, she said, "heightened with each Olympics."

"As I got older, I understood the magnitude behind what it was about," she said. "You're not only representing your country, but I was also representing my race. Winning that gold on American soil, Kerri Strug's vault and the way it played out on NBC was such an iconic moment for our country, and it was an honor and very humbling to be a part of it."

Biles comes off the beam

Even Olympic medalists on the balance beam fall off the 4-inch apparatus sometimes.

Biles' beam routine started strong, but she came off on one of her easiest skills, a side aerial. Her Olympic chances remain unchanged; she will stay in first place.

Now that the best American beam workers, Lee and Biles, have both fallen today, Rivera's 14.275 is even more compelling.

Biles also fell on beam on Day 2 of Olympic trials for both Rio and Tokyo.

Wong dazzles on floor

A natural performer on the floor exercise, Leanne Wong synthesized elegant dance and clean tumbling in the third rotation. Hezly Rivera may have bested her on beam, but Wong did not let that rattle her.

She raised her score by half a point from Day 1, scoring a 13.625.

Rivera is unshakeable on beam

Despite watching Lee have a rough go on the beam, Hezly Rivera nailed her routine.

The selection committee is seated directly in front of the beam and had to have been impressed by Rivera's stability under pressure. She is now two-for-two on her most important routines of the night.

Tiana Sumanasekera will aim to beat Rivera's 14.275 on beam in the next rotation, but it will be a tall order.

Full circle moment for Roberson, Biles

In April 2015, Simone Biles shared a viral video of a tiny young gymnast doing a “perfect” standing back flip with a full twist.

“im in awe,” Biles wrote, adding “some1 help me find this cutie. I wanna meet her, so she could teach me a thing or two.”

That 9-year-old pint-sized powerhouse was none other than Joscelyn Roberson , who now trains alongside the GOAT at World Champions Centre.

Tonight, 18-year-old Roberson has a shot to become her 2024 Paris Olympics teammate, too.

Roberson also made her idol Biles the subject of an elementary school project — perhaps someday, she’ll be on her own trifold poster board.

Rare mistakes from Lee on beam

Lee had the highest beam score Friday but will not continue that trajectory after an uncharacteristically poor showing on the beam.

Her leaps were stunning, as usual, but she fell on her first skill, the mount. She also had other large wobbles and earned a 12.825, nearly two points below her score on Day 1.

She is still in good standing at third in the all-around despite the mistakes.

Suni Lee stumbles while competing on the balance beam.

Biles is efficient on bars

Bars is not Biles' best event, but she is still a world medalist on the apparatus.

That is partially because her routine is very well-constructed. She is able to minimize deductions by performing as few skills as possible. The ones she does perform she performs exceedingly well, hitting every handstand as close to 180 degrees as possible.

Key routines to come

Biles started her night on the vault, where she performed her Yurchenko double pike for a 15.500.

Tiana Sumanasekera, Joscelyn Roberson, Jordan Chiles and more — Biles' training mates at World Champions Centre, the gym her family owns in Spring, Texas — will proceed in what is called "Olympic order," or vault, bars, beam, then floor.

Hezly Rivera and Leanne Wong, who are among a handful of gymnasts competing for the fifth and final spot on the Olympic team, started on bars and will end on vault. Their showdown could have major implications for selection.

Wong performs her best beam of the year

Under the highest pressure of her gymnastics career, Wong hit a clutch beam routine. There was only one visible balance check, and she connected her skills fluidly.

Wong is the most experienced contender in comparison with Tiana Sumanasekera, Joscelyn Roberson and Hezly Rivera. That appeared to pay off on this event, and she scored a 13.650, her best score of the entire year.

USA Gymnastics leadership reeling after string of injuries

Heartbreak is par for the course at the U.S. Olympic trials, but athletes aren’t the only ones with broken dreams. Even USA Gymnastics leadership is reeling after three of the five front-runners for the Olympic team went down with injuries in the past week.

Chellsie Memmel, a 2008 Olympic medalist and technical lead for the U.S. women's team, told NBC News yesterday that it has "not been a fun week."

"It's obviously very challenging from the perspective of putting the team together," Memmel said. "It's really hard to separate and take the emotion out of it, because it's just hard to watch, but we have to put together the strongest team that we can put forward, and that's what we're going to do."

Memmel dealt with plenty of ill-timed injuries herself, having missed the 2004 Olympics because of a foot injury. At the 2008 Olympics, she was limited to competing on the uneven bars after she broke her ankle in Beijing.

Olympic dreams could be made or broken on beam

The fifth spot of the Paris Olympic team is likely to come down to the balance beam tonight.

On a hypothetical team of Biles, Chiles, Lee and Carey, the U.S. women will be looking for support from another strong beam worker.

A fall on beam tonight from Hezly Rivera, Tiana Sumanasekera, Leanne Wong or Joscelyn Roberson could knock them out of Olympic contention; hit routines could punch their tickets to Paris.

Biles' coach wants her to 'just do her normal'

After a shaky outing on the balance beam on Day 1, Biles' coach, Laurent Landi, told her to "just do her normal" going into the second half of the competition tonight.

"I don’t want her to do better, just do her normal. That's all," Landi told reporters Friday. "Stuff will happen, mistakes will happen, it’s part of gymnastics. I don’t think there is anybody that didn’t make a tiny mistake today. I mean, it’s trials. They are trying to make the Olympic team; it’s supposed to be stressful."

Carey's leg days pay off with impressive save

Carey also performed two vaults, a Cheng and an Amanar, which could hold as the highest vault scores of the night behind Biles.

She landed the Amanar (a Yurchenko with a 2½ twist) a bit low and a had to fight to stay on her feet, but her legs of steel pulled it off.

A bars master class from Lee

After Jones went down with an injury, Suni Lee is without a doubt the best bars worker in the country.

She showed the highest difficulty on bars in this trials field, earning a 14.875.

Chiles can work a crowd

Ahead of two gorgeous vaults, Jordan Chiles rallied the crowd to clap to the music in the arena. Even as she competes for a return to the Olympics, she is all smiles and relaxed energy.

Wong could finally become an Olympian tonight

Leanne Wong was an Olympic alternate in 2021 and was a member of every subsequent world championship team. Tonight, her Olympic dreams could finally become a reality, but she'll have to outscore some young up-and-comers.

She started her night on the uneven bars, where she scored a 13.900. That's still a good score, but four-tenths lower than Rivera. She'll want to close some of that lead if she wants to stay in contention.

Leanne Wong

Paris potential by the numbers

As part of its deliberations, the selection committee will consider scores from these trials, as well as other major competitions this season.

Using average scores from the Core Hydration Classic, the U.S. Gymnastics Championships and Day 1 of the U.S. Olympic trials, the highest-scoring potential team in an Olympic Team Final scenario would be Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Kaliya Lincoln with a 172.820.

However, these statistics do not account for certain aspects of selection, like balancing the strengths and weaknesses of an Olympic team. Lincoln’s and Carey’s strengths are the same (vault and floor), and their weaknesses (beam and bars) are identical, with Carey having an edge as a medal threat on vault.

The U.S. might consider athletes who are stronger on events like the balance beam but can also fill in on other events in a pinch.

Roberson answers Rivera's strong start

Joscelyn Roberson, a teammate of Biles’ who is also in the mix for the fifth Olympic spot, performed two vaults. To earn an Olympic vault medal, gymnasts much show two contrasting vaults with different entry styles. She earned a 14.500 for the first vault, which is the one that will count toward her all-around score.

The U.S. already has strong vaulters who score higher than she does, but it's a great start for Roberson.

2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics - Day 4

Jordan Chiles: 'We still have a job to do'

Tokyo Olympian Jordan Chiles had a "rough practice" ahead of Day 1, but everything came together when she donned her competition leotard and finished second in the all-around to Biles.

"At the end of the day, we can’t control what is happening," Chiles said of Friday's injuries. "We can be stressed and we can be concerned, but we also have to understand that we still have a job to do."

In anxious moments, Chiles draws on a sage piece of advice from her mother, Gina.

"Every room you walk into, just be the best Jordan you can be," Chiles said, quoting her mother. "Whether it’s a mall, whether it’s a grocery store, whether it’s the biggest stage on Earth, I just put myself out there and just am authentic to who I am. ... I’m always going to shine brighter and just vibe with it."

Rivera goes 14.300 on bars

One of the most important routines of the night came early in the competition.

With an Olympic spot on the line, Hezly Rivera hit a clean set on bars, earning a huge 14.300. All her routines will matter here, but beam will be especially decisive.

Hezly Rivera competes on the uneven bars at the U.S. Gymnastics Trials on Sunday.

How to tune into the women's U.S. Gymnastics Trials

Tune into the final night of the trials, where the women's team for Paris will be determined, at 8:10 p.m. ET on Peacock and 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Olympic hopefuls take the floor

The athletes competing for Olympic spots tonight were announced one by one as they entered the arena.

Biles and Minnesota-native Suni Lee received particularly earsplitting cheers from the crowd.

'Let the games begin'

As the lights dimmed in the Target Center ahead of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials, "...Ready For It?" by Taylor Swift was played.

Biles will tumble to the song tonight in her quest to clinch her third Olympic berth.

"Baby, let the games begin," as the song goes.

Gymnastics scoring 101

For many years, understanding gymnastics was pretty simple — falls are bad, and a 10 is the best score! Some of the old rules still stand, but scoring in the sport is more complicated than it was in past decades.

Here’s everything to know about modern scoring in gymnastics so you can watch Biles and the rest of Team USA contend for Olympic glory with an expert eye.

It's Pride weekend in Gymnastics City

Hundreds of thousands of people descended on downtown Minneapolis this weekend for both the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials and the annual Twin Cities Pride.

“I’m proud to proclaim Gymnastics City USA Week in Minnesota as our state hosts the gymnastics Olympic trials for the first time,” Gov. Tim Walz said ahead of the trials.

The festivities included a parade, which passed by the Target Center, where the trials are being held, a few hours ago.

Twin Cities Pride was first held in 1972 and has since grown into one of the largest Pride celebrations in the country, with 600,000 estimated to attend, according to organizers.

Taylor Swift: Biles' biggest fan?

Biles is ready for it.

Biles chose to execute some of her most impressive tricks to the intro track of Taylor Swift's "Reputation" album — "...Ready For It?" — which is featured in Biles' U.S. gymnastics trials floor routine. Yesterday, Swift showed her support for the GOAT.

In response to a video of Biles' that NBC Olympics and Paralympics posted to X , Swift replied that she has "[w]atched this so many times and still unready."

"She’s ready for it tho," Swift added, referring to Biles.

The Tokyo Olympians and who?

Based on Friday’s results, the four returning Tokyo Olympians appear primed to return to the Games. The big question tonight is: Who will join them in Paris?

A week ago, the younger, greener athletes in this trials field had next to no shot at making this Olympic team. After a wave of injuries tore through the top American contenders, they are no longer dark horses, and they now find themselves at or near the top of the standings.

With their Olympic dreams abruptly within reach, it will be interesting to see how Hezly Rivera and Tiana Sumanasekera, both 16, respond to the spotlight.

Sneak peek of tonight's looks from gymnastics' biggest stars

The women of USA Gymnastics are READY, sharing a glimpse of their looks for the final night of Olympic trials on social media.

Biles and Jade Carey posted selfies to social media in their matching GK Elite leotards for the trials tonight.

The women's field — now down to 13 contenders after three injury withdrawals — is split into two squads, with each group of gymnasts switching its leotard styles for days one and two of competition.

Gabby Douglas 'heartbroken' for Jones after injury forces withdrawal

After an ankle injury intercepted her own historic comeback this season, three-time Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas weighed in on Jones' withdrawal from the trials .

"I'm completely heartbroken," Douglas said on Instagram .

"No one deserved it more," she said, referring to Jones' securing a spot on the Olympic team.

The two gymnasts trained together at Buckeye Gymnastics in Westerville, Ohio, while Douglas geared up for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but both have since moved to other gyms.

Simone Biles leads going into tonight's final

Simone Biles is four routines away from making her third Olympic team.

She led her Olympic and club teammate Jordan Chiles by 2.5 points after the first day of competition at the Olympic trials. Reigning Olympic all-around champion Suni Lee rounded out the top three.

Meet the men representing the U.S. in Paris

The men’s team was named at the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in Minneapolis yesterday: Frederick Richard, Brody Malone, Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik are going to Paris.

The alternates are Shane Wiskus and Khoi Young. They barely missed the official team but are still considered Olympians by the U.S. Olympic Committee.

“We have a chance to win a medal, and that’s what we’re going to do,” Malone said after yesterday’s final.

Jones will miss Paris Olympics after injury

Nobody pictured Paris without Shilese Jones.

USA Gymnastics announced  yesterday that, after evaluation, Jones will not be compete in the trials today, slashing her hopes of making the Paris team.

Jones, 21, was a near-lock for the Olympic team after having won six world championship medals in the past two years.

Warming up on the vault at Friday’s trials, Jones landed short and immediately cradled her knee.
