Your flights are booked, your itinerary is set, your luggage is filled to the brim with your ideal vacation outfits —all that’s left to pack are your travel makeup essentials for a fun holiday ahead. Whether you’re adhering to TSA guidelines or just want to pack lightly, most of us will not be taking our complete makeup collection along for the ride—making the unavoidable task of paring down your beauty stash an important one.
Our Top Picks
- The Makeup Organizer : July Vanity Cosmetic Case , $85
- The Priming Moisturizer : Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré , $17
- The Makeup Brush : Saie The Double-Ended Sculpting Brush , $30
- The Tinted Moisturizer : Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer , $30
- The Bronzer : Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sun-Kissed Powder , $95
- The Lip Oil : Summer Fridays Dream Lip Oil , $26
A beauty editor’s tip? Visualize the entire routine you’ll practice once you land from start to finish. You’ll want at least one complexion product to even skin tone and veil imperfections, along with multitasking pigments to bring warmth and subtle color to the face—plus, whatever you use to awaken your gaze, like eyeliner or mascara. And if your plans call for glam, eyeshadows and lipsticks are worthwhile additions, too. Below, we’ve created the ultimate makeup packing guide for your summer holiday and beyond.
Trusted Organizers
First things first, determine what travel makeup organizers work best for you. Maybe you already own the best toiletry bag that can fit both your skin-care and makeup necessities, or perhaps you’d prefer to store them separately. July’s water-resistant case has spacious compartments, transparent pockets, and even a detachable wet pouch—perfect to secure in your carry-on . Otherwise, consider Telena’s zippered pouch, which is wide enough to fit all your cosmetics, yet still compact to pop in your purse or personal item for easy access.
Vanity Cosmetic Case
Travel Cosmetic Bag
From the Oscars red carpet to the Met Gala , experts routinely emphasize the importance of skin prep for glowing skin with or without makeup. Our takeaway? Rely on nourishing formulas and face primers to prep your base. We’d reach for an exceptionally hydrating and soothing serum first, then the French pharmacy favorite Embryolisse cream to restore moisture and ready skin for makeup.

Refreshing Mists
The best face mists can be used to give skin a generous moisture boost before makeup application, or even lock in hydration throughout the day. Either way, these formulas will always come in handy. La Roche-Posay’s is made with the brand’s soothing thermal spring water, which boasts skin healing properties; whereas Tatcha’s delivers ingredients like Uji green tea, Akita rice, and Mozuku algae to reveal a luminous glow.

Multitasking Tools
You might be fine with applying all of your makeup with your fingers; if you favor a more precise approach, don’t forget to pack the beauty tools you rely on at home to perfect your look. Consider taking a makeup brush set like this one by Hourglass which features 17 super-soft, vegan brushes designed for the face, cheeks, and eyes. Or, opt for a single dual-ended option that pairs two different brush types in one—a larger side for sculpting and a smaller end for deft blending of the under-eye or eyelids.

Flawless Complexion
Selecting your vacation complexion products is arguably the hardest part, with so many different types of foundations and tints to choose from—not to mention your own skin color potentially changing after spending time in the sun. You can't go wrong with Rare Beauty’s tinted moisturizer that even boasts sun protection plus soothing agents like lotus, gardenia, and white water lily, whereas someone after a more skin-like finish will appreciate the ever-evolving world of complexion balms . Anastasia Beverly Hills’s latest launch blends shockingly easy, making it seamless to swipe on and go.

Customizable Concealer
With your complexion set with an undetectable wash of skin tint or tinted moisturizer, next is to turn to a concealer to brighten dark circles and/or cover up blemishes. Merit’s The Minimalist stick will do just that. While many use it in lieu of foundation, I’m quite fond of it as a concealer—it is, after all, just small enough for deft application along the under-eye and never budges when swiped atop a pimple. For those interested in more traditional options, Natasha Denona’s concealer goes a long way. It’s very creamy but blends with ease, meaning you can cover whatever you like with just a dot of product.

Adaptable Color
The secret to keeping your makeup bag light is opting for versatile pigments that can quickly and easily awaken your complexion—instead of, say, carrying around several blushes and bronzers. Versatility is key on any kind of vacation! Make Up For Ever’s HD Skin Face Essentials palette is my favorite at the moment; it contains hues perfect for blush, bronzer, highlight, concealer, and foundation and cuts my beauty bag in half. Those partial to powders will love Chanel’s Healthy Glow powder. With a simple sweep, the formula creates a natural-looking flush that combines a blush, bronzer, and highlighter in one.

Set & Blur
Even on vacation, it’s important to lock your look in place appropriately. Charlotte Tilbury’s setting powder is excellent to have on hand to reduce shine and blur skin where you need it, earning bonus points for mess-free application (as opposed to loose setting powder options). Same goes for Kosas’s Cloud Set which delivers a soft blur and dreamy skin—so weightless, you’re likely to forget you’re wearing it.

Enticing Eyes
Play up your eyes by way of the a multitasking eyeliner or eyeshadow palette—both of which work wonders to make your eyes pop and enhance their shape. To perfect your signature wing or add dimension to your look, Victoria Beckham’s water-proof formula allows you to precisely etch color however you see fit, and even smudge it out for a more sultry, smokey effect. To amp things up a tad more, take your pick of two Ilia eyeshadow palettes—one Cool, the other Warm—to give lids a dusting of modern matte, satin, and metallic hues.

Fluffy Lashes
Even a lazy, post-beach look can benefit from several strokes of mascara. I mean who doesn’t want their eyes to pop? When it comes to fluffy, fluttering lashes on vacay, you’ll likely want something waterproof and flake-free. Makeup artists say L’Oréal's Lash Paradise is a classic that opens the eyes with a feathery bristled brush. Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara is equally as sought-after for its ability to deliver buildable volume, length, and fullness.

Tinted Lips
Makeup artists say that the key to nailing a minimalist makeup look is adding an accent of color. One of the easiest ways to do so while traveling is by keeping a tinted lip product on hand for a statement-making moment. Summer Friday’s lip oil has been a hit since its debut earlier this year; it leaves your pout softer and moisturized after each application. Not a big gloss fan? Reach for Westman Atelier’s matte lipstick for chic, buildable color no matter the occasion.

Defined Arches
Brows say a lot about a person, so think ahead to perfecting yours when you’re packing for travel . Draw realistic hairs in sparse areas with Anastasia Soare’s ultra-fine pencil, or comb bushy arches in place with a brow gel like Glossier’s that also volumizes and thickens with flexible hold.

The 10 Best Travel Palettes
11.6.20 By Annie N
Hi guys, hope you’re having a good week. It’s been a tough one here, but I’m focusing on the positives.
Last week I shared the 10 Best Neutral Palettes and everyone seemed to love it, so this week I’m coming back at you with the 10 Best Travel Palettes! I know we’re not able to really travel right now, but we will be able to one day soon!
From pocket sized, to full face palettes, I’ve got something for everyone in this round up, so let’s get started!
DISCLAIMER: John Lewis and Look Fantastic links are affiliate, all products purchased by me.
WET ‘N’ WILD COLOR ICON PALETTE IN NUDE AWAKENING – £5.99 from Look Fantastic
This is the most affordable palette in this round up of best travel palettes, but don’t let the price fool you. These really pack a punch, the shadows are pigmented, easy to blend and smooth. I also really love the colour selection, it’s realy versatile for how compact the palette is.
The packaging is nothing special, but it’s sturdy enough to cope with being slung into a suitcase.
You’ve got every kind of neutral you could want in this palette. A few shimmers, a black, a plum, a couple of transition shades. It’s such a good palette for the price. I’ve actually been pretty impressed with everything I’ve tried from Wet ‘n’ wild, their blushes made it onto my Best Drugstore Blushes too.
ZOEVA COCOA BLEND VOYAGER PALETTE – £14 from Beauty Bay
I really love Zoeva eyeshadows. They’re not the most pigmented, but they’re buildable and so good for quick, every day looks. They always do such a good job at creating cohesive palettes. I also love that they do bigger palettes and then these voyager palettes, which are mini versions with 6 curated shades from the bigger palettes.
This palette is so gorgeous! I love the shades in it and the shimmers are stunning. This one isn’t the most versatile, but you could get a few different looks if you’re into simple eye looks with only one or two shades.
I still think this palette has everything you need to create a full look, you just can’t create 8 different full looks like you maybe can with some of the others. This palette is perfect for people who prefer warm looks as all of these shades are pretty warm toned.
NATASHA DENONA MINI PALETTES – £22 from Cult Beauty
FINALLY we get the Natasha Denona mini palettes in the UK! Literally only in the last month or so have we been able to order these here. I’ve always got mine from France when we go. They are such pretty palettes I’ve always been so annoyed they weren’t easier to come by here.
I think these mini palettes are a much more affodable way to try out Natasha Denona as her palettes are £££££ usually. I also think these mini palettes are perfect for travel. You get a great color selection, the packaging is really sturdy and they are so small they will slot in even if your suitcase has to be sat on to close!
Annoyingly I can’t find this Mini Nude palette in the UK, but you can get the Mini Glam, Gold, Star and Tropic palettes. I already own the Star palette and the Glam is next on my list. Any of these palettes would be great for travel, it just depends what colour way you want.
You can get the Mini Nude palette from Sephora France .
BARE MINERALS GEN NUDE EYESHADOW PALETTE IN ROSE – £29 from Escentual
These Bare Minerals palettes are fantastic. The Neutral one made it into my top 10 neutral palettes and this rose one is on my travel palette list. Like I mentioned above, you can obviously choose whichever colour you want, but I just love this rose palette.
It’s a cool version of a pink palette. It’s so pretty and wearable. As always, the performance of the Bare Minerals shadows are great. So blendable and easy to work with. I have all of these Gen Nude palettes and they’re all consistently great.
There’s nothing more annoying than inconsistent palettes in a line. You recommend one, but not the other, even though they should be the same. Happy to report these palettes are all amazing and perfect for travel. I’ve travelled with these palettes a lot as they fit right into my makeup bag.
MAC EYESHADOW x9 PALETTE IN BURGUNDY – £26 from Look Fantastic
I know I go on about these palettes so much from MAC, but they really are worth every penny. They’re small, but perfectly formed.
They do tonnes of different colourways and I have most of them. I love them all, but especially the Amber, Dusky Rose and Burgundy.
These palettes are super versatile, there are loads of different colours and finishes. You can easily get complete looks from these and they’re palm sized.
I actually think, for MAC, they’re good value because their bigger palettes are around £40 now and a single eyeshadow from MAC is still £10 here. I know in these mini palettes you don’t get a full sized shadow, but that doesn’t bother me. I’m never going to be able to use up an entire palette if it’s got 9 full sized shadows.
VISEART PETIT PRO PALETTE – £25 from Cult Beauty
I adore Viseart eyeshadows, but their normal palettes are pretty pricey. They started releasing these Petit Pro palettes a few years ago and they are great. The palettes are credit card sized, but there’s still a decent amount of product.
Much like Natasha Denona, I think it’s great that Viseart are making their products more attainable by releasing smaller palettes. They now do edit palettes too which have 12 shades. I want a couple of the edit palettes so bad, they’re gorgeous!
I think there are 4/5 Petit Pro palettes now, this is the first one and it’s my favourite. They tend to now do a themed colour story, like Apricotine, which is another palette I own.
The mattes are absolutely phenomenal and the shimmers are beautiful. They are not foiled shimmers, but they’re not chunky and they pick up on a brush and a finger.
I love how neat the packaging is. It folds up to be credit card sized, but you unfold it and you have a stand and mirror.
HOURGLASS GRAPHIK EYESHADOW PALETTE IN RAVINE – £53 from John Lewis
Now for the most expensive palette in this round up. I mean, mention the name Hourglass and you know it’s going to be expensive, but these palettes are £53. *GULP*
So these palettes are for if you’re wanting to treat yourself to something special, that can still be the perfect travel companion.
The packaging is so sturdy and it looks sleek and pretty too. You get 5 decent sized shadows and they all perform so well. These really are beautiful palettes. While I do love these palettes, you can get really great eye shadows for a lot less money. The Bare Minerals are half the price, the Viseart palettes are less and Viseart is one of my favourite formulas for eyeshadow.
There comes a time when we all deserve something nice though, so if it’s in your budget, go for it. These really are great, small, compact travel palettes!
VISEART THEORY PALETTE IN MINX – £39 from Beauty Bay
This palette is glorious. The colours work so well together and create some beautiful looks.
These palettes contain 6 full size shadows and has the same style packaging as the Petit Pro where you can fold it up and out. The Theory palettes are slightly larger than the petit pros, but still compact.
I’ve mentioned this palette because I wanted to give you options. Do you want a palette with 8 mini shadows, or 6 full size. It’s completely up to you. I also find it depends where I’m travelling too and how long for. If I was going for a couple of nights, I’d take this palette. If I was going for 2 weeks, I’d probably want something more versatile.
The shimmers in this palette are beautiful, they are so easy to work with too. The mattes almost blend themselves and overall, I just think this is such a great palette.
TARTE TARTELETTE IN BLOOM PALETTE – £38 from Tarte
This is the only palette that has been mentioned on both my Top 10 neutral and my Top 10 Travel palettes.
However, it’s probably one of my favourite palettes ever. It’s super versatile, the packaging is sturdy and you get a great mirror. The amount of times I’ve been caught out with horrific lighting in a hotel room, so I have to sit by a window with this palette as my only mirror.
It’s the only palette where you can open it and it stays where you can see the mirror. It’s so annoying when the top flops backwards and you can’t see without propping it against something.
This palette came with me to Lapland and survived the plane journey there and back. It survived -28C in Lapland and has come back to the UK and still performs as if I bought it yesterday. The shades are stunning, you get an array of colours and formulas and the mattes are some of my favourites to work with.
This palette is slightly bigger, but if you’re going away for a good amount of time, but only want to take one palette, then this could be it. I know when I go away for 2 weeks I only want to take one palette, not 3 or 4. I can’t sing this palettes praises enough!
TARTE CLAY PLAY EYE AND CHEEK PALETTE VOL II – £40 from Tarte
Now, this palette is for people who want to take one palette with them on holiday that has their eyeshadows, blush, bronzer and highlighter in. It’s a large palette, but for sheer ease I still love travelling with it.
It’s effortless and you know you can do a full face and eye look with this palette. When I’m short on time or packing space, I just grab this palette and I know I’m covered for everything. The blush is super pretty, the highlighter is gorgeous. I don’t personally use bronzer, but I have used it on my eyes and it’s lovely. All the shadows perform well and I think there’s a good selection of shades.
There was some controversy when this palette came out as there was a VOL I (I didn’t get it as it had no blush in) and when Tarte announced the VOL II was coming out everyone got excited. Me included. However, when people started getting their palettes they realised Tarte had literally put different shades in the same packaging. Everything has the same name as the VOL I and it’s a bit silly that the shade Onyx in the VOL II is a bronze… in the VOL I it’s a black like onyx should be.
However, I much prefer the VOL II to the VOL I. I wish they had named the shades something different, but the actual palette is gorgeous and much more up my street than the first version.
So, there we have it, my Top 10 Travel Palettes! All of these palettes deserve their spot in my 10 Best Travel Palettes for different reasons. I love them all and they’re all so great to take away. It really depends where I’m going, for how long and what I’m doing when I’m away as to which palette I take. However, I definitely only want to take one palette with my when I go, so I’ve tried to find palettes which can create a few different looks and ones that can create simple and full looks!

17 Best Travel Makeup Products to Use on the Go

Have you packed your suitcase for your long-cherished vacation yet? In this article, we’ll help you pack your makeup bag by presenting our picks of the best makeup products for travel ! These are products that are small, sturdy, easy to pack, and fulfil multiple purposes. You are sure to look like a million bucks getting these travel makeup products that are simple and multi-purpose.
1. Sephora Z Palette
The Z palette is the secret weapon for thousands of makeup artists, but it’s also super useful for anyone traveling. This empty palette is magnetized and it comes with little magnetic stickers as well, so you can create your own customized palette out of single eyeshadows and blushes .
You can choose a large one to carry literally all of your pan products, or you can opt for a smaller one just to carry a small selection of shadows and blushes. Later on in this article I give some suggestions on how you can remove makeup tins from bulky containers so you can put them in your Z palette.
There are endless ways of arranging products in a Z palette, so it’s great for just about anyone! Get a palette that’s the right size for you at Sephora !
2. Too Faced The Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow
This chocolate-scented eyeshadow palette will put a smile on your face every time you go to do your eye makeup. It’s a great travel makeup palette because it is small yet sturdy, has a built-in mirror, and is filled with totally wearable matte and metallic colors. With this palette you’re not restricted to one look during your whole vacation – you have a few makeup options!
I chose this palette because it also includes lighter glowy shades that can work beautifully as highlighters both for the eyes and the cheeks, as well as a few shades of brown and taupe that can work as eyebrow powder for many people. Any one of a number of darker shadows can also be applied as eyeliner! You can pick it up from Sephora .
3. Dose of Colors Baked Browns Eyeshadow Palette
If you’re willing to forego complex and varied eyeshadow looks, then a 5 or 6-shade palette will probably be a better choice. It’ll take up less space and still allow you to get a little glammed up when it’s necessary. Each one of us has a different go-go eyeshadow look, but rosy browns are super trendy right now, so I decided to suggest this palette.
You can do a quick, no-makeup look with it or get a little darker and sultrier. The shades are all matte, so you might want to carry a highlighter with you for brightening up the inner corners. Find it at Ulta !
4. MAC Cosmetics Mini MAC Lipstick
Lipsticks don’t really take up a ton of space, so you might be able to take a few colors with you without any problem. Personally, I only carry one full-sized lip color around, but then again, I’m a little boring.
MAC lipsticks are classics with a creamy texture and trendy matte finish. With the mini versions of all their most wearable shades you will have space for a bunch. This is a great choice if you really like to change your lip color up from day to day! Pick up 3 or 4 from Nordstrom !
5. Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation
If you have oily skin it can be great to have a pressed powder foundation on the road instead of a cream one. It won’t be any problem to carry in your carry-on, and it won’t require setting! This powder foundation from Cover FX is a quick one-step that’ll keep you looking matte and give your skin nice medium coverage. The formula is talc-free, super lightweight, and contains kaolin clay to absorb oils. Find your match from 38 shades at Ulta !
6. It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+
If you have normal or dry skin, on the other hand, then this CC cream might be the best travel makeup option! Its coverage is on the higher side, but you can sheer it out with your moisturizer if necessary, and it has one of the most beautiful natural finishes!
It’ll cover imperfections without highlighting dry spots, and it can work well without being set with powder. It’s got some serious sun protection power, and the formula is super moisturizing so you might even be able to use it without face cream. You are sure to find a color match, since it comes in 12 colors at Sephora .
7. Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Longwear Foundation Stick SPF 21
If you prefer high coverage even while you travel, consider this stick foundation ! It can double as your concealer if necessary, and the finish is matte enough that you probably won’t need to carry around a setting powder. You can skip the brushes or makeup sponges if you like, as this product is quite easy to blend with the fingers à la Pat McGrath. This formula will give you some sun protection, as well, for those sunny days when you’re out and about. Find your favorite of 25 shades at Nordstrom !
8. Simple Kind To Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes
If you’re really roughing it, makeup wipes are indispensable. You can use them to clean your face, your brushes, and even your hands in a pinch! They’re a little too wasteful for daily use, but on a trip using them can be justified. These ones, in particular, are super gentle on the skin. They remove all makeup thoroughly, but they keep the skin hydrated with a dose of glycerin and panthenol. Get them from Ulta !
9. Milk Makeup KUSH High Volume Mascara Mini
A dark black, volumizing mascara is awesome to have while you travel. It will often save you the need for eyeliner, and it will make you feel done up and awake in seconds. The Kush mascara from Milk Makeup will also keep the lashes moisturized and healthy, and in its miniature size it fits into even the tiniest makeup bag easily. You can buy it from Sephora .
10. E.L.F. Cosmetics Flawless Face 6 Piece Brush Collection
Give yourself a full-face look with just 6 makeup brushes ! This set is perfect for travelers, as it includes all the brushes you’ll need to do a full-face makeup, and they don’t break the bank so if you lose one or two it’s no big deal. The set includes two complexion brushes and four eye brushes, and we can think of all kinds of creative uses for them to ensure that you’ll need nothing else. You can order them from Ulta .
11. NARS The Multiple Stick
This all-in-one product is perfect if you’re truly low-maintenance when you travel. The NARS Multiples are makeup sticks that can be applied to the cheeks, lips, or eyes – that’s right, a single product that can be a blush, lipstick and eyeshadow ! You can take just one, or choose a few instead of all of your blushes, highlighters , and shadows. Orgasm is the perfect gold-flecked coral, Portofino is a gorgeous rose, and South Beach is the loveliest golden tone for highlighting. Choose your favorites from Nordstrom !
12. YSL Baby Doll Kiss & Blush Lips & Cheeks
If you like a more saturated color in a product that takes up even less space, then opt for a lip and cheek tint rather than a stick. It won’t work for the eyes, but it’ll give you super gorgeous lips so perhaps the exchange is well worth it.
These lip tints are perfectly blendable for an easy blush application, while they can be built up to opacity on the lips. They keep the lips soft and hydrated without being too matte or glossy. Choose Nude Insolent for a day to day shade, or Fuchsia Desinvolte for something more dramatic. They are available at Net-a-Porter .
13. Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner
I normally wouldn’t bother with a liquid liner while traveling – I find it much easier to apply dampened eyeshadow with a small angled brush. However, for many women that sharp wing is a must, in which case this waterproof liquid eyeliner is awesome to have. It won’t budge on hot days nor will it require touch-ups, and the design is sleek and streamlined so it’ll fit in any travel makeup bag with ease. You can purchase it at Sephora .
14. Nudestix Nudies Matte Blush & Bronze
I’m not quite done with stick products yet! They’re just so convenient for travel beauty on the go. Many folks prefer doing all-cream looks when they travel, so these sticks are perfect for contouring and blush. They can go anywhere on the face, and they even come with a brush on one end for blending. Choose Bondi Bae as a contour shade for lighter skin or Deep Maple, Eh as a contour shade for darker skin. Both are available, along with three blush shades at Sephora .
15. Tarte Tarteist PRO Glow To Go Highlight & Contour Palette
If you prefer powders, this little set is perfection. It includes a bronzer, highlighter, and blush in a sturdy package, and a nicely large mirror. All three shades can also be applied as eyeshadows, so you can leave your eyeshadow palette at home. I love this kit because the highlighter and blush are both gorgeous glowy, but the contour shade is perfectly matte. You can buy it from Ulta .
16. Absolutely Lush Trifold Lighted Makeup Mirror
Whether you’re staying at a hostel, hotel, or Airbnb, don’t expect an amazing mirror. It’s better to bring your own! I find most palettes have a decent enough mirror, but if you’re traveling without one, or if you want the best visibility possible, then consider this lighted makeup mirror , which is fitted with LED light strips.
It magnifies, but not overly so, so you can see your whole face but get a precise makeup application. The light is adjustable, so you can see your face clearly even in the dark but without getting blinded. It has a foldable design that will allow it to fit easily in your bag, and you can keep it charged with a USB cord or batteries! Buy it on Amazon !
17. Travel Makeup Bag
This little bag is perfect. It’s just big enough to hold all of your travel makeup, but not so big that you’ll be tempted to take unnecessary stuff with you. It has a few compartments for brushes, and a mesh bag in case you want to bring your Beauty Blender-style makeup sponge with you. It’ll hold your goodies securely, so you know nothing will move around or get damaged. It is made from black nylon for easy cleaning. You can order it from Amazon .

While that may sound daunting, it’s pretty easy, we promise! Read below for the products and instructions you’ll need to create your own case!

How to make your own makeup palette case step-by-step
Supplies you’ll need for your DIY makeup palette:
- Small makeup palette
- Powdered makeup
- Paper towels
- 91% isopropyl alcohol (91% works better than 70% rubbing alcohol)
- Latex gloves
- Small dish or plate to mix the powders and the alcohol
- Small spoons
- Paring knife
- A dental pick or toothpick —something with a point!
Claim your space for a little palette makeup creation
Are you ready for some creative palette DIY? Line your workspace before you begin with paper towels or work on a big tray. Powders can get messy.
Start with a case that’s a size you desire. I found this one on clearance at the grocery store for $1.50.
Empty it out with a pick and save the shadows in small baggies. When I did this, I saved one pan of shadow to use as is but crushed and removed the rest.
Clean with alcohol to remove any residue. I also took the labels off my kit with Goo Gone .
What cosmetics should you include in your DIY makeup palette?
Any powdered cosmetics should work. As an example, I knew I wanted to have a shared blusher/bronzer and powder foundation, in addition to the eyeshadows. You can even “share” a pan with different powers.

Prepping your powders for transfer to new pans in your homemade makeup palette
Crush up the powder you wish to put in new pans to a fine dust. Make sure to smash all the chunks you see. I used a plastic mini spoon to do this, and I even blended two shades of powder foundation to make a new color!
With an eyedropper or tiny spoon, slowly add isopropyl alcohol to your powder. Stir to make a paste.
Your makeup should now have a frosting-like consistency. If you add too much alcohol, you need to wait a few minutes until it starts to evaporate and makes the paste a little harder.

Filling the pans in your makeup travel palette
With a small spoon or spatula, put your paste in the desired spot, leaving it slightly above the level of the pan. Distribute it to all four corners of the pan evenly.
Just a note on how to make a magnetic makeup palette: you can fill your pans outside of the case before placing them in. Just make sure they’re metal so they stick to it when you’re done!
Leveling your DIY palette paste and drying the powder
Let the paste dry for 2-3 minutes.
Use your fingers to stamp down in the corners and level out the paste in the pan as you go. Remember, the paste should be a bit above the level of the pan.
However, if there is too much product and it’s spilling over the sides, shave some off with a paring knife.
Place a paper towel over the pan. With your fingertips, press down gently to start absorbing the alcohol and further level the paste. Do this until the paste is almost dried into a pressed powder. Don’t push too firmly, just try to absorb the excess alcohol, keeping the paste more or less level as it dries.
You may need to change paper towels. This step takes time.
Once the product is level, place a dry, paper towel over the pan and push down firmly with your fingers to compress the powder evenly, edges included. Do this several times, and replace the paper towel each time, until it no longer shows moisture coming up.
The trick is to be firm, but not too firm; you want your powders pressed, but not compacted to the point where they are too hard to use.
If you want a smooth surface, after pressing with the paper towel, cover the pan with a piece of plastic wrap and push down.
Allow 24 hours for the powder to harden and the pan to fully dry. Leave the cover up so that any moisture in the powder evaporates. Once dry, you can use the tip of a knife, or a toothpick to clean up a pan’s edges.
Products can share a pan. To do this, just cut a straight line on the edge of one of the products as it dries, before you add something next to it or you can add all the different colors at once.

Your finished compact makeup palette
You can use pans of any size and configuration to customize your case, include metal pans for a DIY magnetic palette.
This one has a bit of powder concealer, combined with a blush. I added both pastes at the same time.
Scrape off any excess powder that may have collected on the palette’s edges with a knife and clean with alcohol.
This DIY makeup eyeshadow palette is one of my favorites and normally contains two eyeshadows. My new one, however, contains six eyeshadows and one powdered concealer and is 2.25” long, by 1.5” wide.
This case has concealer and two shades of bronzer and blush.
Take a look at these tips on the best eyebrow makeup for travelers!
The pros and cons of a DIY makeup palette
- You can take several of your favorite cosmetics with you in one container.
- You’re not stuck with colors that come in whatever pre-made case you buy.
- You can add products together that you wouldn’t normally see, like powder concealer in an eyeshadow palette.
- A travel pallete is perfect for those who take trips only a few times a year.
- The consistency of the shadows and powders that you add to an empty case can vary slightly from the originals, based on the pressure applied when the powder is drying. Experiment with how much to apply. You want enough to hold the powder firmly together, but too much will make it hard to put powder on an applicator.
Have fun, experiment, and breathe new life into old cracked powdered makeup with a DIY makeup mixing palette.

Compass Rose Packing Cubes
How to Pack a Makeup Travel Kit
When it comes time to pack your makeup, you’ll want to consider a makeup bag to keep it separate and neat in your luggage. Consider a small cosmetic bag that can fit easily into your toiletry bag .
You also can wrap your makeup bag in clothing and add to your packing cube in your suitcase to better protect it. Even if you travel carry-on only, your bag may be put into an overhead bin, under a seat, or hauled up flights of stairs. You don’t want to break your products.
Only pack what you think you really will need and use. Watch the video above for tips on how to downsize your beauty products.
However, if something does happen to your makeup or beauty supplies, if you forget something, or if you need something, you can buy products at your destination.

I took a dollar store eyeshadow compact and did the same thing but with lipstick. It’s my mini-lip palate! I love it so much after my trip I officially downsized to my travel kit for everyday use. I’m looking for the perfect compact to use for all my powders (shadow, blush, foundation).
Hi Jessica, thank you for sharing how you made your diy makeup palette with us, love the idea of creating a mini-lip palette!! Happy travels! ?
This is a great idea you can save so much money doing this. I have been doing this for years now actually I’m glad others are doing it as well.
This is the best makeup idea I’ve ever heard – a million thank you’s for writing about this!!!
Hi, thank you so much for your feedback, so glad that you found it helpful! 🙂
I’ve been pouring over travel blogs for months and this is such a great, unique idea! I just tried making mine and it worked great–I fit a lip color, blush, 2 eye/brow shadows, and a face powder all in one little bitty pallete. I even used one of my extra now empty palletes to make some play makeup for my daughter (with some nail polish :-). Thanks for this trick!
Thanks Skye! We do our best 🙂
Awesome. I have always wanted to do this but never have!!
I can’t wait to try this! I wonder if this will work with loose mineral eyeshadows (not sure if the alcohol would change the minerals). I have also seen people press a quarter on top of the paper towel to level it out.

Stila Travel Palette Empowered in Pink Plus Details On Stila Fabulous in Fiji Palette
Ah here’s a little something to get pretty excited about. As we wait for the final Stila Travel Palette to release we can get a little sweet filler until it arrives.
Let’s take a look at the Stila Travel Palette Empowered in Pink.
Stila Travel Palette Empowered in Pink is available at Ulta but sadly they do not list the contents however the good news is they do list the Stila The Fabulous in Fiji Palette, thank the makeup gods for small favors.
Stila Fabulous in Fiji Includes Eyeshadows in:
- R&R (light blue)
- Palm (green)
- Escape (blue)
- Wave (navy blue)
- Plus Stila Convertible Color in Plumeria
Now if Ulta would just whisper in our ears about what Empowered in Pink has. Looks like a really nice palette. Obviously it’s in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as well.
As soon as I hear further information I’ll post.
Whatcha think?
I believe powder Courtney ;-D and this looks ideal for a softer look on farier skin ;D
Danielle F.
Ugh! Now I want this one too. Good thing ULTA has free shipping on $25 or more this week. Made a good excuse to snap up UDs Urban Glow in Sin. I cannot wait to get this one in the mail–what a nice surprise for BCA. I have the first four of these and I have to say I was disappointed with the Moscow palette. The convertible color in this one is the only one that didn’t have a great color payoff. While the eyeshadows are pretty, the convertible color really let me down. This one also had a bit of shimmer to it that the first three palettes did not have. Still worth having if you collect though!
Hey Danielle I didn’t get my moscow yet, waiting! But sad to hear it wasn’t so fab, damn! Def ant the BCA one ;-D It looks sweet. Any code for the free shipping?
The eyeshadows are still good IMO, I would describe all of them as shimmery and the colors look like a peachy-pink, a warm copper with copper shimmer (very pretty) a light shimmery blue with silver shimmer and a little bit of gray to it (love this) and a matte brown with copper shimmers in it (hardest to blend, kind of chalky). I think it’s my skin tone–I have medium skin so it barely shows up on me–good as a highlight though. I think fair ladies will enjoy the convertible color of this palette as it’s more toned down then the rest. Very natural pinky nude color with shimmer and sheen.
Ulta code: 59045 for free shipping over $25
Cannot wait to try out this next one, admitting to being addicted to these travel palettes!!!!
it sounds rather pretty Danielle ;-D I wish mine would arrive already waiting over a week WTH 🙁 thanks for the free shipping code now I can order this one without the guilt ;-D at this price how can we not be?!
Comrade_Garlic
Grrr…I refuse to buy from Ulta. Stila needs to sell this on their site.
comrade hopeful they’ll do it on the site would save $ on shipping as I really don’t want to spend $25 for the FS ;-D
Why do you refuse to buy from Ulta? You know, I have had the Ulta Rewards since May, and I still haven’t received my rewards certificate!!! WTH?
Absolutely no customer service. I get tired of having to hunt somebody down to ring me out. Nobody can answer a simple question. I haven’t bothered ordering online, just rather not give them my business.
They don’t give out rewards certificates, you can just ask to spend them in stores, remember points expire yearly. Like, you can just keep saving them because its better to do it that way, like at 500 points, you only get $4, at 1000 points you get $9 and at 2000 you can get $20 off.
For those of you gals who want the palette but don’t want to spend $25 to get free shipping, there is another coupon for $5 off your $10 order. I believe Ulta charges $5 for shipping so with the $5 off it would be like getting the palette with free shipping. Code:44443
Danielle I tried that but for some reason the coupon didn’t take grrr!
It didn’t work when I just tried either! Dang! Not sure why it’s not working…sorry for getting everyone’s hopes up!
prob for non-premium brands Danielle grr 😛 ;-D guess I gotta go with the 25 bucks and free shipping hehe!
Any idea if this is going to come to Sephora or is it an ULTA only kinda thing?
dunno yet Courtney doesn’t say exclusive at Ulta so hope to see it at both Sephora and Stila 😀
Stila said on its Facebook that it’s an Ulta exclusive. *Sigh*
thanks andrea ;-D
i saw this in the ulta ad. i thought it was kind of a curious thing that its called empowered in pink…but none of the shades are pink. maybe thats just me lol. i like the colors though.
mm looks like one or two shades of paler pink peri!
breyerchic04
No interest in empowered in pink. I have Paris so that’s fine.
Depending on what the convertible color looks like in Fiji, i might be interested in it.
UGH!! I went to my Ulta today to get this and they were out. *sigh* I guess I’ll have to order online. I’m sure I can find stuff to get me to the free shipping. 😉
I cannot WAIT for Fiji.
aw sorry Laci but hey free shipping, gotta loves ;-D
I bought the Philosophy Shower for a Cure to get me to free shipping. Yes, I would rather buy extra stuff than pay for shipping. LOL
ha me too laci ;-D good one btw I might get that one too!
Like I said before, I wish the Tokyo palette or something had more greens in it because it seems there is blue in almost every palette! Anyway – I picked this up at Ulta yesterday, mainly because I’m collecting the set, not because I like the eyeshadow formula. I also like the packaging, too. I would be completely in love with these if the eyeshadows had the “Stila feel” to them, that creamy texture we all love. And honestly, I would pay $20 a piece if they had the Stila eyeshadow feel and were not made in China!!! That’s the biggest thing I hate about these palettes. Every other Stila product I have is made in USA, and maybe the packaging is made in China, but in these palettes, the makeup, everything is maid in China, and I think that’s why the eyeshadow seems really hard and difficult to blend unlike other Stila shadows. Does anyone else agree?
looks like Fiji will be the greens/blues Promise 🙂
Sadly they are indeed made in China, not sure why Stila went that route with this, imagine cheaper to produce. But quite saddened it’s not made in the US.
USA is the only one i thought was a bit sheer, the rest were all very pigmented and soft I find?
The pink palette is pretty, and Fiji sounds interesting. I hope Ulta will start selling Moscow online soon so I can get that and the pink one in one order… I don’t have a store near me and my Sephora doesn’t have any of the travel palettes in stock!
P.S. For anyone who’s interested, with any $25 Stila purchase at Ulta you get a free Black Diamond mascara.
Oh thanks Andrea for the mascara deets ;-D
Ahh the Stila Travel Palette Empowered in Pink colors look really pretty. I wish these were the colors for the USA Palette instead because that was disappointing. I really hope EiP is available on the Stila site or Sephora because ordering from Ulta is a pain. Once I ordered an NYX stick and they sent me the wrong color.
I agree PJ. US was a vast disappointment as was Tokyo imho! 😛 sadly someone just said, Andrea, it’s exclusive to Ulta as stated by Stila’s FB. 🙁
Ahh that’s a shame it’s exclusive. I used to hate convertible colors but the Paris and Tokyo palettes changed my mind and I find I use the CCs as a base on lips. Maybe because they are LE it’s a mental thing too that makes me want to collect!
pj I’ve always loved CC in the Summer good light wearin’ that has incredible long wear ;-D it’s the LE thing for sure ;-D!
From Stila Cosmetics on Facebook: shade names: life (white-champagne shimmer), hope (pink-champagne shimmer), giving (light purple-brown shimmer) and inspiring (deep violet shimmer) convertible color: pink ribbon
hanks Danielle!
just got this today and i can’t wait to wear it tomorrow. fyi, all the shadows has shimmers in it… so those who dont like the shimmer.. dont buy.. but its not glittery, its a fine shimmer… theres life: pearly shimmer; giving: grey shimmer; hope: light pink shimmer; inspiring: very dark purple with pink shimmers. pink ribbon convertible color: looks like the carnation pink crayola. loves it!
that’s great news, as I like a shimmer finish ;-D hannah. I can’t wait to try!
stila cosmetics shade names: life (white-champagne shimmer), hope (pink-champagne shimmer), giving (light purple-brown shimmer) and inspiring (deep violet shimmer) convertible color: pink ribbon
from Stila’s FB
thanks Michele
Hi Muse, I was on the Stila Facebook page and got this info on the EiP palette
shade names: life (white-champagne shimmer), hope (pink-champagne shimmer), giving (light purple-brown shimmer) and inspiring (deep violet shimmer) convertible color: pink ribbon
I’m going to Ulta today to see if they have it.
thanks karrie ;-D that helps!
Just letting you all know, I bought the Fabulous in Fiji palette at my local Beauty Brands store! The convertible color is a very warm rosy brown with shimmer, more on the brown side. That is what made me think, the convertible color is warm but the eyeshadows are cool toned?
awesome Ida. How’d you get it so fast? It’s not even out online anywhere yet!
This palette isn’t on Ulta’s site anymore and my local Ulta hasn’t gotten any in two shipments. I am really hoping there is more stock coming. I want this palette and I am heading to my nearest Beauty Brands to see if Fiji is out yet. PS I just got a PT job at Sephora, hopefully I’ll get some nice insider info.
I know damn bridgette it sold out fast 🙁 so sad. I hope they restock or at least other places get it.
Oooo YAY! give us all the gossip!
Visit every color of the rainbow with these vibrant destinations

The world is filled with bright, vibrant and eye-catching destinations that can make any trip a colorful experience, both literally and figuratively. With that in mind, Lonely Planet is proud to celebrate them in a brand new book called Travel by Color , the first and only travel guide by color palette, which features 400 stunning photographs of amazing destinations and events across all different shades. From the deep reds of Tambopata National Reserve’s scarlet macaws to the verdant greens of the Peak District’s Rolling Hills, the book charts rich and diverse places to make any traveller feel alive. Here’s a selection that will allow you to travel through every color of the rainbow.
Red: Red Square, Moscow, Russia
An iconic symbol of Russia built by order of Ivan the Terrible, St Basil's Cathedral stands proudly at the southern end of Moscow's imposing Red Square. Constructed from 1555 to 1561, the building's idiosyncratic colorful domes sit atop amber-red towers. It's a rich, colorful display, and elsewhere, the square truly lives up to its name, with the dominating color of red showing up in the fortress-like structure of Lenin's Mausoleum, Kazan Cathedral, the State Historical Museum and The Tsar's Tower. Red Square is often closed for celebrations and rehearsals, something to note if planning a visit there.
Orange: New England, USA
The destination for autumn leaf-peepers, New England's fall foliage is a vibrant display of nature at its most breath-taking. Scarlet and sugar maples, birch, beech, dogwood and oak all contribute to the parade of captivating colors, and for outdoor enthusiasts, it’s the perfect place to visit . Top spots include Smugglers Notch in Vermont , and Crawford Notch in New Hampshire, protected forest areas where glaciers came through during the last ice age, providing spectacular viewing.
Yellow: Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon’s yellow funiculars are a pleasurable and practical way to explore different areas of the picturesque city, and they sure beat walking up all those steps. Connecting Restauradores Square downtown with Rua San Pedro de Alcántara in Bairro Alto, the Glória Funicular (or Elevador da Glória) is the most popular of the city’s three funiculars, and offers astounding views of the surrounding area. As well as what they offer, the vehicles’ distinct, vintage look with their bright yellow exteriors have become iconic.
Green: Kamakura, Japan
Much more than a day trip from Tokyo, Kamakura is a laid-back, seaside town that offers tranquillity and peace of mind. Hokokuji Temple boasts a lush forest of 2000 moso bamboo that lie just behind the temple’s main hall, which houses an impressive Buddha beyond the Zen temple gate. Kyoto’s Arashiyama grove is equally enchanting, as is the Sagano Scenic Railway route to it – also known as the Sagano Romantic Train.
Blue: Blue Lagoon, Iceland
Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa with warming water that is supplied by the nearby Svartsengi power station. While popular with tourists, it is an essential stop when visiting the country, and soaking in the hot nurturing water contrasted with the crisp, fresh air in winter is a truly calming experience. With a combination of 70% sea water and 30% fresh water, the Blue Lagoon is a perfect 38°C and includes natural mineral salts, rich blue-green algae and silica mud. You may even be lucky enough to catch a light show in the sky while there.
Indigo: The Sahara
Along with camels and water, clothing is an essential detail for the Tuareg people when crossing the Sahara, and over time indigo blue has emerged as a popular choice for tagelmust turbans and veils. Protecting wearers from wind, sun and sands, the headwear is exclusive to Tuareg males on reaching maturity. There are many ways for visitors to immerse themselves in experiences across the Sahara , with each one proving to be a rewarding and unique experience in its own right.
Violet: Provence, France
It’s no wonder photographers flock to Provence and the Côte d'Azur every summer to capture the stunning fragrant fields of purple and violet lavender that the area has become famous for. One of the best places is along the D8 road in the direction of Plateau de Valensole, where you can see lavender fields and sunflowers right next to each other. The flowers are also found in numerous places in Drôme, such as Saou et Montbrun-les-Bains as well as in front of the famous Abbey of Sénanque . As well as that there’s ancient olive groves, clifftop roads and even snow-capped mountains.
Rainbow: India and Nepal
One of the world's most vibrant and powerful displays of color, the hindu festival of Holi is a celebration of spring and love beautifully expressed with tonnes of color each year throughout India, Nepal and, increasingly, parts of Southeast Asia too. If you want to take part, be prepared to be covered head to toe with colored paint, be it in powder or liquid form – the latter usually delivered via water guns and balloons.

Stila travel palettes (part 2): rave for "make an impression in moscow".
- As with all the Stila travel palettes the packaging is TDF cute! The package is small, portable, and sturdy. With a nice sized mirror inside and good magnet closure. Love it that the Stila girl "looks like me" on this one, LOL! :)
- The eye shadow colors: Matryoshka (shimmery light beige-brown), Nadia (Shimmery Copper, almost orange), Chill (Shimmery baby blue), Mink (shimmery deep brown).
- The eye shadows have great texture and are very pigmented. They apply and blend well! Totally love them!
- Here is how I wear the shadows: Matryoshka on the lid, Nadia in the crease, Mink outer corner and blended on upper lash line. I line the lower lash line with a MAC 266 and the Chill Shadow topped over Wet n Wild's sky blue liner pencil (this combo lasts ALL day without smudging!). I line the upper lash line with Bobbi Brown gel liner in Chocolate Shimmer Ink (which coordinates so well with these shadows). I highlight and do inner corner with Wet n Wild's Brulee shadow single (might do a mini rave post about this soon...I have been reaching for this more than my MAC Vanilla...love it!). I love doing my eyes with this palette! I am experimenting a bit more with color lately and I think lining the lower lashes is a great way to finish off a neutral eye and make it more interesting. (If I could *ever* master the art of self photography I would post an eye photo!!! I promise ya'll, I'm trying...video might be a better medium for me!).
- The Convertible Color (lip and cheek cream color): Lily (a lovely shimmery/dewy sheer peach). I find the texture of Lily to be very different than the convertible colors in my other two Stila travel palettes (that are "harder" in texture and wear better as a blush). Lily is *very* creamy and glossy. It wears best as a sheer lipcolor/gloss as I found it to be a bit too dewy and sheer for the cheeks. As a sheer lip color/gloss...totally Beautiful!!! It wears as a perfect shimmery peachy color on my lips. Seriously love this as a lip color!

great post hun, love that palette I need to try Stilla products cant wait to see ur looks with these
Thanks Sher! :) Stila products are great!!! Thanks for reading.
So funny Pammy! I have all of these too! haha I totally agree about the cream colour, its totally different in this one! I feel like I'm going to use it up really fast because I get so much of it on my finger! But it is super pretty! These colours probably look great on you! This palette isn't ideal for me...I'm more of the "Pretty in Paris" girl! haha Great Review!!
Shaylee!!! :) Too funny! "Pretty in Paris" is one of the ones that I don't have yet! I can see how those colors would look good on you! Yes, I agree...I feel that the CC on this Moscow palette will run out way before the shadows.
great post! I love this palette its super adorable!! :-)
Thanks liquoredonlacuer! :)
Looks very nice. I bought one of those palettes but didn't think the shadows were pigmented enough.
FunnyFaceBeauty-the pigmentation is much better on this palette than my other Stila travel palettes? Interesting? Also, the texture of the CC is much more creamy. Thanks for reading!
