Throughout their 8 years together, Dallas alt-pop trio little image morphed from a group of perpetually online suburban teens obsessed with underground indie rock who had no idea what they wanted to be, into the tight-knit outfit you see today. While many artists had their careers derailed in 2020 due to COVID, it actually managed to save little image , who was gearing up to announce themselves to the world.  “ It was a blessing in disguise,” Bruner says of lockdown. “ We were about to jump into something we didn’t exactly have figured out.”   This time allowed little image to fully expand on the promise of early singles “WORTH IT” and “EGO,” exploring different ways to create a pop-rock song beyond the basic guitar/bass/drums template. This new burst of creativity led to a partnership with producer Chad Copelin (LANY, Sufjan Stevens, 5 Seconds Of Summer) and culminates with their debut album SELF TITLED out now.

Upon first listen to new music from Dallas alt-pop trio little image , you’ll probably find yourself asking, “With songs this well-constructed, how have I not heard of this band before?” That’s primarily by design, says drummer Troy Bruner.

“ We’ve been playing music together for eight years, but it doesn’t look like we’ve been a band for eight years, and there’s a reason for that,” he explains. “ This is the beginning .”

Throughout that near-decade, little image morphed from a group of perpetually online suburban teens who were obsessed with underground indie rock and had no idea what they wanted to be, into the tight-knit outfit you see today. (Along the way, Bruner toured with platinum-selling act Judah & The Lion.) While many young artists had their careers derailed in 2020 due to COVID, it actually managed to save little image , which was gearing up to announce itself to the world without realizing the members needed more time for reflection.

“ It was a blessing in disguise,” Bruner says of lockdown. “ We were about to jump into something we didn’t exactly have figured out.”

”More than half the record came out of that downtime, ” frontman Jackson Simmons elaborates. “ We got to hone in on some ideas. To be able to sit with them was really good. ”

That extra time allowed the members of little image to fully expand on the promise of their early singles “WORTH IT” and “EGO,” exploring different ways to create a pop-rock song beyond the basic guitar/bass/drums template. This new burst of creativity led to a partnership with producer Chad Copelin, whose CV includes such sonically diverse artists as Third Eye Blind, Sufjan Stevens and 5 Seconds Of Summer. Simmons credits Copelin with creating a warm, nurturing studio environment that allowed each member to explore their influences.

“ Something we talk about a lot is if little image could be anything, it would be a world people could live in,” comments bassist Brandon Walters. “ It’s very important to us to create a world where someone can have a safe place to question things and not know the right answers and not have it all figured out. ”

“ It starts with the three of us,” Bruner continues. “ We’re all best friends. If we can start there, which is how we love each other, that expands and a culture is created. At the end of the day, we make all of this so someone can go to a show and be impacted — socially, mentally, spiritually. We want to give them an opportunity to step into something bigger than them .”

Of course, all of this is moot unless you have the songs to back it up, Luckily, little image doesn’t lack in memorable moments.  Their current single, the M83-esque indie-dance number “LUNGS BURN” is a diamond in a sea of gems:

“Taking a broad scope view of current culture and how damaging the idea of technology and the obsession with our self-image can be, ‘LUNGS BURN’ is an invitation to let go, be yourself, and be present instead of drowning yourself in your phone and the toxicities that exist there. The song is a cry for people to come together and experience something without those things in play, and truly feel something bigger than themselves.”

Then there’s the more guitar-oriented vibe of “BLUE,” a song spawned out of the past few years of political strife in America, described by Bruner as “a very special song to all of us.”

“ What inspired ‘BLUE’ is that sometimes in our culture, things can be very, very loud and you can hear a lot of opinions,” Simmons begins. “ We love to hear all kinds of sides, but instead of screaming and yelling, we take a back seat and just listen and try to find the voice of reason. I think if a lot of people would take that approach more often, there would be a lot less chaos going on. I respect the passion and the rebellion in some aspects of things, but sometimes you have to take a step back and say, ‘Let me learn from you. ’”

This level of self-reflection is a rarity in music these days and is a testament to the work little image ’s members do on themselves. (Therapy and journaling are among the topics that get brought up freely in conversation between the trio.) It’s part of what makes Bruner’s big-picture goal for little image so compelling.

“When bands headline Red Rocks in Colorado, they write their name backstage,” explains Troy. “This was probably not the right thing to do, karmically speaking, but when I played there with Judah & The Lion in 2019, I wrote half of our name — ‘little’ — and took a picture of where it was, so when we headline Red Rocks, we finish it off together.”

Together . If there’s a single word that can sum up little image — from their music to their mindset — that’s it.

This year, the band was also added to iHeart ’s premiere breaking artist program On The Verge – ALT. The group is currently receiving nearly half a million streams every week.

SELF TITLED doesn’t lack in memorable moments: From the hip-hop groove of “BALLET” to the electro-dance break in “ WORTH IT” to the acoustic softness of “ MAKEUP, ” the album sonically delivers the goods. Then there’s the more guitar-oriented vibe of “ BLUE, ” a song spawned out of the past few years of political strife in America, described by Bruner as “a very special song to all of us.”

The result, SELF TITLED , is more than just a collection of 13 songs — it’s an actual album , deliberately sequenced to tell a story of self-doubt, self-reflection and eventually, self-love. But while the album is a document of its three members’ lives to this point, little image hopes to use it to connect with people across the globe

DEBUT ALBUM SELF TITLED

OUT NOW VIA HOLLYWOOD RECORDS

A HITS’ Q1 New And Developing Artist

Today, Dallas alt-pop trio little image have released their stunning debut album, SELF TITLED, via Hollywood Records . In celebration of the record’s release, the band unveiled the cinematic video directed by Sawyer Skipper for album track “ RUNWAY .” It’s an inherently simple concept of an open room with a focus on the band, in their signature painted-over suits, working and reacting together on a long red carpet. The video’s trippy cinematography and playful editing mimic the song’s eerie synths and vocal distortions leading into a cathartic celebration of tearing up the carpet, ripping up the pressure that comes from constant gazes of critics.

On the release, the band says, “ The runway music video pokes at the simple yet important meaning into our record ‘SELF TITLED’. With it being the final single from the album, we wanted it to feel celebratory but also intentional. The idea of a blown up runway for us feels like the culture we are trying to create in this band and music. The reason we do this is to bring people together and not single ourselves out to be watched like hawks. The music industry can be like an intense, blinding light that never goes away. With the runway video, we found a way to get away from all that and be ourselves.”

RELEASE NEW SONG “ BALLET ”

OUT MAY 12TH VIA HOLLYWOOD RECORDS

Today, Dallas alt-pop trio little image unveiled “ BALLET ,” the latest offering from their upcoming debut album, SELF TITLED releasing May 12 via Hollywood Records . From introspective verses to the band’s signature atmospheric sound and catchy chorus, “BALLET” is a reflective portrayal of one’s inner struggle with body image, and has all the makings of an alternative rock smash.

About the song the band reflected, “’ BALLET’ is a raw look into our own and our culture’s struggle with self image. We are constantly comparing and asking ourselves why we look the way we do, looking in the mirror and finding a deep longing to see something that is different from who we are. We hope this song can encourage people to love themselves beyond the ideology we have instilled in our brains that we must look a certain way, and remember nobody else can be you other than you.”

INTERVIEW: little image talks upcoming album, touring, family, and more!

little image tour dates

The debut album from little image,  SELF TITLED,  will be released this Friday May 12th via Hollywood Records. On the album, band members Jack Simmons (vocals, guitar), Troy Bruner (drummer), and Brandon Walters (bass, synth) explore the familiar struggle with self discovery. Over the past eight years, their sound has been reevaluated and they’ve benefitted from the pandemic as a way to reveal themselves to the world. As they prepare for their album and upcoming shows, we catch up with Jack and Brandon to hear more!

Hi! How is everyone?

JS: Doing good!

You guys just finished headlining for Colony House! How was that experience?

JS: It was amazing! It’s kind of rare when you go on tour with people you’ve known previously, much less your best friends. So getting to be on the road with our best friends for two months was pretty special.

BW: Amazing!

Did you learn any new lessons from touring? What was your favorite show?

BW: That’s a tough one. There’s so many special shows. I feel like I’m going to go with my gut and say Cleveland.

JS: Cleveland and Denver for sure.

BW: Lessons? They are just some of the most well-rounded humans I’ve ever met. Being in the music industry and touring is hard to navigate, and anytime you can find somebody who is solid in the midst of the craziness that is touring and puts family first. We’re all just sponges and we want to take it all in, so we learned a lot of lessons about balance. It’s always worth it to go the extra mile to make sure you don’t go without seeing loved ones. We’re all married, so we come out on the road and we’re still the same people back home with the same responsibilities. I think that life balance was one of the biggest lessons I learned from the tour.

Little Image | "EGO" The Live Experience

Your proper debut albums comes out Friday, May 12th. How are you guys feeling?

JS: I feel relieved and nervous all at the same time. It’s been such a long time that we’ve been working on it, so it’s a relief to finally say “These songs are the world’s now. We can release them and move onto the next thing.” But at the same time, you’re nervous because you’ve spent so much time it. You hope that people actually like it.

I know that the album focuses on self reflection and truly discovering yourselves. Were there any songs on the album that were harder to write than others?

JS: One of the harder ones is called ‘NEW LOVERS.’ It detours a little bit on the self image, because it’s a pretty personal song for me.

Y’all were together for about eight years before building up to your initial debut. During the pandemic, were there any big moments that made you feel like now is the time to go out into the world?

BW: As our stories were ramping up, COVID happened. During the initial ramp up, we were sort of just running and gunning. We didn’t really know what was happening. We had this one song out and this tour, the rest just happened as it happened. COVID took us from the ramp up and crashed us, just like so many artists. For us, it was actually a time for us to stop and ask “What do we want?” If we’re going to say one thing, if we’re going to make some kind of mark in music, what do we want that to be? It was a time to fully look at the big picture and have control over everything rather it just happening to us. So that’s why we’re so stoked on the album, because we got to create such a specific image and story that we’re very passionate about. Had we not had that time to distance ourselves from it, and come back together to get in the studio and let the top down, we definitely would not have this album or be the same band. It was very, very formative.

Is this also the  inspiration behind the title ‘ SELF TITLED ‘?

BW: Yeah! The self titled idea was as we were in that top down, and personally how we were dealing with the war with ourselves on who we are versus the shell we put on. At first, someone brought it up as a joke while we were having a conversation. It was one of those things where someone went there, instead of laughing it off we all went “Huh? That’s perfect.” As on the nose and as cheesy as it is, the title felt like the book cover of our story. This sort of war and what lies beneath self.

How excited are your family members for the album?

JS: My dad is really excited. He’s at every show he can be at. I have to tell him sometimes “Dad, it’s coming. Slow down. Let me finish it up.” And he’s like “Well, we’ve got to have the album.” My dad’s really pumped.

BW: For all of us, our wives are very involved in the process as far as support goes. It feels like, for my wife at least, she’s maybe more excited than I am for this because she’s sacrificed so much for this. She listens to the album all the time, it’s on constant rotation for her. The fact that it actually gets to go out into the world is something she’s absolutely itching for. I’m very excited that it’s coming out. It almost doesn’t feel real, but I’m more excited for her to get to show it off I guess.

I noticed that in the ‘BALLET’ music video, the dancer is Jack’s wife. How did that come about?

JS: It was a last minute thing. We were going on tour and someone brought it up. My wife has been a professional ballet dancer for a while, and she grew up dancing. Someone brought it up that we’ll be on tour and can’t film the music video so why no have Prin do a beautiful piece of work. It was so cool to collaborate with my significant other. None of us saw it until the video was done, and that was a cool, fun surprise because we put all of our trust in her.

little image - BALLET (Official Music Video)

What were the artists that grew up listening to around your house?

JS: It was all different for us.

BW: For me, it was Def Leppard and eighties glam. My parents met each other in that world. My dad was a singer for an eighties hair band, and my mom was in that world. I grew up immediately exposed to rock ‘n roll and the craziest of rock ‘n roll. From an early age, I knew I wanted something to do with that world. I believe the funnest part about the three of us is that we come from such different background. That’s totally not the music I listen to now, but it’s certainty what I grew up with.

JS: My dad was really into eighties music as well, but not quite hair metal. We listened to a lot of The Cure, and Huey Lewis and the News was around when I was a little kid.

Would you say these artists influenced little image?

BW: It made us fall in love with music, because we wouldn’t want to do what we do without it. Maybe The Cure, they’re sick.

JS: Yeah, you kind of take The Cure and run with it.

BW: I don’t think we listened to music that would influence us until later high school.

Which artists during high school?

JS: One big band for us was Mutemath. We were always inspired by their live performances and attention to detail in recordings. Bands like Radiohead, we discovered later in high school.

BW: Some of those feel good, amazing artists that we always tried to pull from.

What are some of the new songs you’re excited to play live? How are you feeling for the Dallas show on May 13th?

JS: I’m really excited for ‘GLUE’, it’s the last song on the album. We’re doing a different arrangement for it live. I think it’s going to be really, really fun. It’s a different thing for us. I’m really excited for the Dallas so as well.

BW: Same. ‘BALLET’ still just slaps, it’s really fun to play.

Is there a tour planned? Or y’all just seeing how it goes for now?

JS: We’re currently working on it! Probably, we’ll be on tour in the fall for sure.

Are y’all planning on bringing new elements to the three shows?

JS: It’s a surprise!

The Dallas, TX trio  little image have had a long road to the release of their debut album. Formed over eight years ago betwewen close friends Jackson Simmons (vocals/guitar,) Brandon Walters, (bass/synth) and Troy Bruner, (drums), the group slowly formed a shared identity around indie rock married to big-screen ambitions. COVID hit in 2020, and it gave the group a greater ability to reflect and fine-tune what they wanted to be; after a long wait, the band’s debut album  SELF-TITLED  will be released on May 12 via Hollywood Records.

The band’s paired the announcement with a kickass new music video for album single “OUT OF MY MIND” directed by Sawyer Skipper. The song itself is a blast of indie-pop energy reminiscent of COIN  and Melodic favorites  almost monday , but the video carries a certain intensity that finds the band performing the song “in our own world” as lead singer Jackson Simmons would share to me over a Zoom call to chat about the album. Watch the video below, and keep scrolling for our chat with  little image :

First thing’s first – how does it feel to finally get this out into the world? I know a lot of the mythos that surrounds your band has to do with the long and winding journey you’ve taken to get to this point.

Brandon:  It feels incredible. Jackson:  I can’t believe it’s really happening, honestly. It’s been a lot of dialing-in, but we’re here with it now and really proud of what we’ve made. Troy:  It feels like it should’ve happened a long time ago, but it also makes perfect sense as to why now is the perfect time to put this project out.

How far back do these songs date?

Jackson:  Most of them are from the past three years! Brandon:  2018-2019 is when we started most of the heavy work on the album; still, it’s felt like such an eternity given that some of that was through COVID, where we were asking ourselves if we were ever going to release anything ever again. Troy:  In a weird way, it feels like we’re beginning now. I can think of one song from early 2018 that made it on there, and we debated including it for a while just because of its age. I’m glad it made it on though – it’s kind of a cool feeling that the song made it, you know?

I just had a stroke in realizing that 2018 was five years ago. (laughs)

Troy:  You hate to hear it. (laughs) I think we all deserve, like, at least two years back. If you turned 25 during COVID, no you didn’t. (laughs)

One thing that I think is special about your band is the distinct visual identity that you’ve incorporated into this album rollout — all of the videos exist in this world with bright colors and an almost-futuristic vibe. How did the video for “OUT OF MY MIND” come to be?

Troy:  We work with a very close-knit team, and we’ve been pretty lucky to keep everyone together as we’ve signed to a label and elevated ourselves as a band. For the last three years, it’s been the same crew; we honestly work in the same way we’re working right now, except you’re Sawyer [Skipper, music video director]. “EGO” kind of set the scene for the brand and the vision, and Sawyer just became a part of us now and we’re really grateful to have him involved. With “OUT OF MY MIND”, we had a higher budget and we knew that we had more to do with this release, so we were super intentional with how it’d fit in to the  little image world. I love this video because it’s like we took everything we’ve done so far and then put it in our living room — like our own little hangout with pieces of our story — and then the song itself, Sawyer had this idea of how to visualize the out-of-body experience that we all go through every day with our anxieties and stressors, and I feel like he nailed the vision. We had a set designer who helped, and I remember we walked onto the set and had our minds blown because it truly felt like us.

What’s the most exciting part of the creative process for you?

Jackson : There’s one moment that I always look back to in this album’s process — it might’ve been during COVID, but our manager came to us and encouraged us to all get together to really put work in on the album and finish some of the aspects we were struggling with. We all hopped on planes and went to Troy’s house for, like, a week to knock it out; we’d work all day, into the night, at 2 in the morning — and it was just special. All the moments in the studio were really special, but that week, in particular, was one of my favorite parts of the creative process because we got to take these ideas we’d been sitting on for a while and force ourselves to bring them to life. Brandon:  I think our favorite part collectively is when we get to be in the same room together. We’re not always in the same room, so we start all of our ideas individually; eventually, we come together and we make it happen. But in that separation, there’s a vulnerability you have that I’ve never really experienced with anyone else. It’s incredibly special to see that turn into something like a record — to watch something grow from that vulnerability.

Yeah, over Zoom you have to trust people not to mess up your stuff.

Jackson:  Literally, yeah. When I send over a session remotely, if I’m carrying a mindset of “this isn’t how it’s supposed to sound”, then it’s not going to be a  little image song.

Was there ever a struggle point while making  SELF-TITLED?

Troy:  You know, being a long-distance band is a struggle in and of itself. But I can remember a specific point where the songs were on the verge of turning into a record; we knew the world we were living in, but we couldn’t quite put our nose on it. There were three songs left — and it was the album-y songs, not the singles, and we were just struggling to reach the finish line on those songs. I just remember throwing my hands up and saying “These aren’t going to get done. There’s not going to be a record.” The relief when those were done was outstanding, though. Jackson:  That’s why that week was so special to me — it was a decision for all of us that these  were going to be done, and we all gave ourselves the room to do that. Brandon:  Everything’s always floating around, and it’s our job to just bring it back to Earth; you’re always working on something with everything you have, with the full understanding that it just might not work out. So it’s a relief when you get to the end and it’s actually done, and you have the ability to celebrate what you’ve done.

You’re about to jump on a pretty extensive tour with Colony House — as I’m sure you’re aware, touring is kind of funky right now! What lessons are you taking into this tour after touring with acts like Switchfoot and Panic at the Disco?

Brandon:  I think we’ve learned how our camp operates best. When you’re on tour, and especially at the size we’re at — in a van, making gnarly drives — for us, touring is 90% logistics and 10% doing it. Jackson:  Maybe 95% and 5%. (laughs) Brandon:  So having a tour manager we trust, knowing how to give each other space, and making our home on the road as much as we can helps our camp. If you have that, then you can trust one another better, and try to communicate as well as possible. Every tour, there’s something that’s new, but we feel more prepared and more emotionally mature than we have before. Jackson:  I think we’ve learned how to talk to each other when things need to be talked about — if you kick stuff under the rug and let the tension build, then everyone loses!

Get the full indie music experience when you secure your Little Image tickets today with TicketSmarter. Alternative music or sometimes referred to as alt-rock or simply alternative emerged from the independent music underground in the 1970s and became very popular in the 1980s. Alternative music is in reference to the genre distinction from commercial rock music. In 1988, Billboard introduced alternative music into their charts. Early versions can be found dating back to the 1960s with the Velvet Underground.

Alternative music has helped define new styles of music including indie rock, grunge and noise pop. The music tends to vary from the mainstream as it relates to social context and its sound. The breakthrough of Nirvana in the 1990s brought alternative rock to the mainstream in music. Throughout history, alternative rock has been defined by its rejection of the commercialism of pop culture. However, ironically alt-rock has become so popular that concert ticket sales have exploded and in many cases surpassed many pop-rock artists. Grab Little Image tickets now so you can experience alternative music live and in person.

Little Big Town on celebrating 25 years of harmony with upcoming tour and "Greatest Hits" album

By Analisa Novak

June 12, 2024 / 10:42 AM EDT / CBS News

Little Big Town is celebrating 25 years as a trailblazing country music group, keeping all four of its original members. The band is set to embark on a tour in September alongside country duo Sugarland.

With their harmonious four-part vocals, Little Big Town has carved out a unique space in country music. They are a group where both fame and vocals are equally shared among members Kimberly Schlapman, Karen Fairchild, Phillip Sweet, and Jimi Westbrook.

The band's Kimberly Schlapman said she's never have reflected on their success but realizes they've achieved something unique together.

"I think that's probably the key to why we keep going because we never, ever fully think that we're there. It's like the hunger to see what's around the corner," said Fairchild.

25 years and a "Greatest Hits" album

The band is marking its 25th anniversary with the release of their "Greatest Hits" album this summer.

"We want to do this for the fans," Fairchild said.

With 32 chart-topping hits, they have a vast catalog to choose from, including favorite songs like "Pontoon" and "Wine, Beer, Whiskey."

Little Big Town's journey began in the mid-90s when Schlapman and Fairchild met in college. Initially, both Schlapman and Fairchild were pursuing solo careers in country music.

They began brainstorming and realized there wasn't a mixed-gender group like The Mamas & the Papas or Fleetwood Mac. This led them to envision what such a group could look like — which eventually led to the creation of the band.

Their unique concept took shape and led them to their first record deal in 1999, with their debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry. Despite facing setbacks, including two failed record deals, their perseverance paid off with the release of "Boondocks" in 2005, a song that became their breakthrough hit.

"'Boondocks' was like the little star that could, and we just couldn't believe it," said Sweet.

Tragedy and triumph

In the same year as their breakthrough, tragedy struck when Schlapman's husband died of a heart attack. The band members, including Schlapman, were at a radio station in Indianapolis when they heard the news after Schlapman received a phone call from her pastor and a police officer.

"She was screaming, and the four of us just laid together on the bathroom floor," said Fairchild.

"I couldn't even walk, and they walked me into the bathroom. Couldn't walk for myself. So they carried me, and then they kept carrying me for months and months and months until I could walk again," Schlapman said. "And that is why we're still sitting here."

After all they have been through, Little Big Town remains as close as ever. Schlapman remarried, Sweet and Fairchild also found love, and Fairchild and Westbrook married each other. Now, they all have kids and often raise them on the road.

As they celebrate their silver anniversary, the band members are grateful for their journey, and hope to spread the unity they've found among themselves to their audience this fall when they embark on the tour.

"Our legacy is the perseverance. Hopefully… kindness. You know, now we need some kindness back," said Fairchild.
