Manchester Orchestra are hitting the road. Fresh off of last year’s The Million Masks of God , one of the best albums of 2021 , the Atlanta rockers have announced a new run of 2022 tour dates. Plus, to get you excited, they’ve shared a new live video of the album cut “Dinosaur.”

The brief stretch is bookended by performances at Ohana Festival and the first weekend of Austin City Limits , with stops in Ventura, California; Tucson, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Denver, Colorado. It comes after a summer slate heavy on this year’s festival circuit, with appearances at Lollapalooza , Firefly , and more.

See Manchester Orchestra’s full list of 2022 tour dates below. Tickets for the Ventura and Tuscon shows go on sale beginning Thursday, June 23rd at 9:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Grab your seats for the other new dates on the band’s website . For the remainder of the trek, tickets are available now here .

Recorded during a hometown show at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, the live clip of “Dinosaur” previews the tour with Manchester Orchestra’s signature brand of melancholy heaviness. Hull croons while awash in blue and green light before drummer Tim Very kicks into the song’s stomping climax. Check out the clip below.

Fantastic show! So good live. Very happy with seeing them. My wife never heard their music, which was surprising, but she enjoyed it as well. Keep it up Manchester!

If they are coming your way, see them live. Its just one of those bands. After all these years and they sounded phenomenal.

Absolutely brilliant gig last night at Shepherd's Bush empire! These guys are what live music is all about: it completely transcends the recorded material which is already phenomenal. If ever they play a show in your town, make a point of being there! Belting out the final refrain from colly strings last night with the rest of the crowd will live long in my memory!

Mind-blowing. Absolutely sensational performance, first time I've managed to see them and it massively exceeded my expectations. Every moment was fantastic. Atmosphere was great, energy was off the charts. Still buzzing now.

Manchester Orchestra has announced a full-scale North American tour in support of the band’s new album, The Million Masks of God .

The Atlanta date, by the way, will be Manchester Orchestra’s annual hometown Thanksgiving-themed concert, The Stuffing.

“It is our absolute pleasure to announce our return to the stage across the United States,” says frontman Andy Hull . “We have missed playing together in a communal setting more than we ever thought we could. This is about to be a party. See you all soon.”

Tickets go on sale this Thursday, June 24. For the full list of dates and all ticket info, visit ManchesterOrchestra.com .

The Million Masks of God , the sixth Manchester Orchestra album, was released in April. It includes the single “Bed Head.”

Manchester Orchestra’s new album  The Million Masks of God  presents an even grander scale of the epic and re-focused approach to record-making that the band has forged in recent years. The band—lead songwriting duo Andy Hull and Robert McDowell, alongside Tim Very (drums) and Andy Prince (bass)—relentlessly pushed themselves to create music that would break beyond the scope and limits of every previous album, all while sorting through the aftermath of a devastating loss.

While making 2017’s instant-classic  A Black Mile To The Surface  (featuring the band’s first #1 AAA and Top 15 Alternative radio hit “The Gold”), Hull and McDowell had an epiphany about how they wanted to approach their band’s music from that point forward, a way inspired heavily by the multi-tiered challenges and rewards they encountered while working on their first film score (2016’s  Swiss Army Man ).

The new method was to make tightly-woven “movie albums” intended to be listened to in sequence and in a single sitting, with the songs working together to tell a bold, long-form narrative.  The Million Masks of God  can be seen, in a way, as the band’s sophomore album following a rebirth with  Black Mile , and Hull’s early concept for it was a natural extension of the main theme of its predecessor. “If  Black Mile  was this idea of ‘from birth to death,’ this album would really be more about ‘from birth to beyond, focusing on the highs and lows of life and exploring what could possibly come next,’” he explains.

Masks  explores the loose story of a man’s encounter with the angel of death as he’s shown various scenes from his life in a snapshot-style assemblage. Some moments he witnesses are good, some are bad, some difficult, some commendable—in other words, they depict an entirely normal life. Initially based on a fictitious character,  Masks  began to process real-time emotions as McDowell’s father entered the toughest part of his fight with cancer, eventually losing the battle in 2019.

“It started off really abstract, but as Robert’s dad’s fight with cancer got harder and harder those last couple years, I started making parallels in my mind to what I was actually writing about,” Hull explains. “It became an examination of my own faith. While Robert’s dad’s story certainly influenced this album, it’s equally about me coming to grips with the realness of adulthood and that there’s an expiration date to all of this—and how you’re going to live your life knowing that.”

“My dad was a musician and our band’s biggest fan, and I can’t think of a more flattering way to honor him than to let him exist in a form of art he loved so much,” McDowell says. “It wasn’t shocking to hear what Andy had been writing; the way he writes, the real life around him will always trickle in. For me, the album’s story isn’t just about the figure’s death but the life. It’s unfortunate but unavoidable: in life, death happens, and it’s been happening forever. We’re figuring out how to exist with grief, but grief hasn’t killed humanity. We have to zoom out and see it as part of life.”

At three different points throughout 2019, the duo convened with the remaining half of the band in a Georgia cabin to hash out the sonic skeletons of the songs. Armed with patience and prowess, Manchester spent countless hours and untold energy on this constructing process. Despite this dedicated effort, they also resolved to stay fresh, a decision that led them to take months off at various points—to return to their families, and once to tour for the tenth anniversary of the band’s second album.

In the time since, Hull and McDowell also scored their second film (2019’s  The Death of Dick Long ), and released Bad Books’ (their band with Kevin Devine) 2019 album,  III . More recently, Hull found time to collaborate with diverse artists like Logic and Paris Jackson (whose debut album he and McDowell produced). The process was ultimately the most time the band had spent working on songs prior to recording.

When it came time to record, Manchester turned again to producer Catherine Marks, with whom they collaborated on  Black Mile , and artist/producer Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers).  Masks  was finalized between sessions at Echo Mountain Studio in North Carolina and at Gruska’s studio in Los Angeles. The four-headed production monster of Hull, McDowell, Marks, and Gruska (who also contributed keyboard, guitar, and percussion) proved to be an invigorating combination.

As epic and ripping sonically as it is conceptually heady, the album unfurls into an ever-expanding and lush world of instrumentation. The driving “Keel Timing” simmers to a howl before seamlessly shifting into the urgent and cathartic “Bed Head,” and are two of the band’s most fiery singles to date. With a share of quieter moments, like the tender “Telepath” and the wistful “Way Back,” Manchester Orchestra maintain a transcendent dynamic throughout.

“We were taking what we learned on  Black Mile  even further,” Hull explains. “If something felt most comfortable as a traditional rock song, we’d try to figure out how to turn it into something that’s less comfortable for us to dig into but that could actually sound better. I do think working on it so much for so long helped the songs all start to organically connect. Several songs share choruses, lyrics fold over themselves and keep coming back, and there’s a cyclical intertwining within it all. It’s a carefully constructed collection. A dream-like montage of life experience.”

In fact, the sequencing of the songs was perhaps the most deliberate choice made. Hull intentionally disregarded a more traditional sonic chronology in order to stay in step with the subject matter, instead balancing the record more in the way a life might play out. He explains: “There’s the idea of a birth; the beginning of the end, maybe, and the louder, more intense arrangements are placed up front in order to parallel the hectic nature of your early life and the anxiety and stresses of that stage. And as it continues on there’s more resolve and quiet and focus, almost like you’re laying the listener down—at the very end, everything’s slowing. So once we committed to that idea, it was fascinating for us to figure out how it all fit together. It opened up a lot of possibilities. We weren’t afraid of straying away from a typical structure anymore.”

The Million Masks of God  is undoubtedly Manchester Orchestra’s most towering achievement, and showcases the strength and boundary-pushing invention of their renowned catalog. It’s also a testament to the kinship of its songwriting duo—the bond that enables them to take something so tragically personal and turn it into limitless, compassionate, communal, revelatory art. “Making this record reiterated to us that there are no rules and there is no ceiling,” Hull says. “It convinced us of what we were stumbling upon with  Black Mile , which was to be ambitious and take our time in order to create something really special; to be courageous and think differently. There’s a huge amount of trust within the band now, and when that happens you start to trust everything more. The whole thing feels like a real unit of discovery and accomplishment.”

Foxing bassist Josh Coll recognizes now that perhaps naming the St. Louis band’s much-lauded debut album The Albatross after the symbolic creature from Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” was tempting fate. “It was just the five of us in a room together,” says Coll. “I don’t think we really expected our first album to be heard or embraced by as many people.”

Despite that initial lack of ambition, popularity happened anyway, sending the quintet on tour for months, garnering plenty of new fans, but also creating high expectations for a follow-up. “When I was in school, people would say to perform subpar in the beginning [of a class] even if you know exactly what you’re doing so it looks like you’re growing.”

Foxing didn’t have the luxury of growing quietly into their abilities, so Coll and co-writer/vocalist Conor Murphy felt a heavy burden. They don’t have to worry any longer: sophomore album Dealer isn’t what Coll feared doing—basically “The Albatross Part II”—but instead a deeper, more vulnerable expression of the starkly realist view that everything is fleeting. (After all, the band’s unofficial motto is, “We’re a band, and someday we won’t be a band.”)

Dealer occupies the triangulated space between the instrumental rock symphonies of Explosions In the Sky, youthful exuberance of The World Is a Beautiful Place and I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, and the lyrical catharsis of Arcade Fire’s Funeral. First single “The Magdalene” deals with Murphy’s Catholic school upbringing and how that affected sexual expression. Elsewhere, the lyrics delve into grief over family members and post-traumatic stress. It’s an emotionally raw record, and one that’s still noticeably difficult for the band to talk about in interviews. But Foxing has responded to expectations with a sophomore album that emerges from a vulnerable place to speak plainly and stand strong. [Wired]

Dreams materialize and manifest in the most unexpected and unassuming of places. This one came true in Michigan. Writing, recording, and performing under the name Michigander , Jason Singer saw beyond his humble beginnings in the town of Midland, MI. So, he picked up a guitar, performed countless marathon cover sets in local dives and watering holes, moved to Kalamazoo, and launched his career in 2014.

The singer, producer, and guitarist achieved the kind of viral success that reaches other small towns with his debut single "Nineties" before unveiling a pair of fan-favorite EPs --  Midland  [2018] and  Where Do We Go From Here  [2019]. As the latter's standout "Misery" eclipsed 3 million Spotify streams, he even got to hear himself on the radio. along the way, he performed alongside Mt Joy, Hippo Campus, and Silversun Pickups and joined festivals with The National, Foster the People, Moon Taxi, and Alt-J. By 2020, he had gathered 18 million streams and received praise from American Songwriter, NPR, Paste, and many more.

Manchester Orchestra have also shared Dirty Projectors ’ rework of their single ‘Telepath’, which you can hear above.

Of the track’s origin, vocalist and songwriter Andy Hull said: “‘Telepath’ is ultimately about the ebb and flow of life long commitment to another person. Recognising that even the best relationships in our lives can have extreme ups and downs.

“At the end of the day, it’s those that we have chosen to love and, more importantly, those that have chosen to love us that truly matter. This is my attempt to further commit for the long haul.”

The ‘Telepath’ remix will feature on an upcoming EP of Manchester Orchestra remixes, which also features Local Natives’ reworking of ‘Bed Head’ .

It is always a grand homecoming celebration. Manchester Orchestra, natives of Atlanta, GA (no, not Manchester, UK) return with what may just be their best performance to date. A concert that won't soon be forgotten, from the lineup, the individual sets, and the ultimate finale, it was incredible from start to finish. The band is wrapping up their tour in support of their latest album, The Million Masks Of God , and their latest single "No Rule".

The Stuffing, now in its twelfth year, has been a staple in the band's touring since its inception in 2010. With the exception of 2020, when the festival was cancelled, it has been performed every year and featured artists ranging from Cage The Elephant, GROUPLOVE, The Front Bottoms, and more. This is the festival's fourth edition at The Fox Theatre, a historic 1929 theatre that features over 4,600 seats and is a staple in Atlanta. This year's lineup included Julien Baker, Lunar Vacation, Joy Oladokun, Petey, and Leah Wellbaum.

Her short set got the crowd eased into the long night ahead of them, and her casualness on stage brought a lot of warmth on such a chilly night. Solo with just her electric guitar, Leah absolutely crushed it, with a cover of "Glycerine" by Bush and her own "Horseshoe Crab" being highlights.

Petey 11/18/2022 at The Fox Theatre | Dylan Basden Photography

Petey stood as the only act on this lineup I was not already familiar with. One of my favorite parts of The Stuffing is the artist discovery, Manchester Orchestra does a fantastic job at putting on new artists and showcasing their friends' music. Some past acts that come to mind are Brother Bird, Kevin Devine, and Slothrust. Petey immediately jumped out at me. His whacky and off-kilter lyrics paired with an often manic delivery shined, but they also felt highly introspective. His songwriting has that same kind of ultra-specific relatability that you would find in acts like The Front Bottoms. His voice was commonly strained and had a distinct rasp, all furthering this feeling or urgency in his words. For his first time in Atlanta, you couldn't ask for more.

Joy Oladokun 11/18/2022 at The Fox Theatre | Dylan Basden Photography

Joy Oladokun is a name that you need to remember. I first caught them performing at Hangout Music Festival this past May and I knew immediately they were one to keep an eye on. Joy is absolutely infectious, and her name truly is representative of who she is. Their music comes from deeply personal roots, being a first generation American, black, and queer has brought adversary to her life. Despite this, they have also found a lot of peace. Songs about hope and love for one another juxtapose subject matter like discrimination and religious trauma. A magnetic personality, Joy was just a pleasure to hear live, especially in the magnificent acoustics of The Fox Theatre. Her melody of her own song "i see america" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was phenomenal and they ended their set with a standing ovation from the crowd.

Lunar Vacation 11/18/2022 at The Fox Theatre | Dylan Basden Photography

Atlanta natives Lunar Vacation hit the stage to much fanfare. The last stop on tour with Petey and Manchester Orchestra, the quintet was eager to make their Fox debut special. Soft, indie rock filled the auditorium as the band swept through their catalog of music. They're a name I've always heard, but have yet to see in a proper show. I see why. They stand out again an often times bland indie landscape, with a lightness and freshness that you don't often see. Their song "Unlucky" was an instant standout, with its casual look at heartbreak, feeling so in-touch and simultaneously distant. They are absolutely a name from Atlanta to keep your eye on.

Julien Baker 11/18/2022 at The Fox Theatre | Dylan Basden Photography

Serving as direct support, Julien Baker hit the stage just ahead of Manchester Orchestra. This was the last stop of Baker's 2022, and the final stop in support of her 2021 album Little Oblivions . Swelling indie rock with moments of absolute blistering power set the stage for a stellar performance. Julien and her band had an incredible presence on stage, running amuck and raging the entire set. They are obviously, and they just as clearly were having a great time.

The_Stuffing_XII_11.18.2022-6.jpg

A surprise cover of Pedro The Lion's "Second Best" featuring Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra was a riveting performance. Julien and Andy pair perfect vocally, and the huge build of the song created a massive payoff that Julien fully capitalized on. Julien Baker's near legendary status among indie-rockers is one with complete merit, and her performance at The Stuffing certainly cemented that for me.

Manchester_Orchestra_11.18.2022-012.jpg

The time had finally come for the grand finale. The crowd erupted in cheers for the return of the hometown heroes, and the band emerged from backstage to be greeted by thousands of fans. It is an inspiring moment, seeing all of a band's success thrust onto them the moment they hit the stage to their most loyal and diehard fans. The emotions on each member's face was telling.

Manchester_Orchestra_11.18.2022-007.jpg

Explosive. That is the best way to describe how the set began. From the quick swell of "100 Dollars", which featured Julien Baker, into the three song run of "Pride", "Keel Timing", and "Bed Head", the band quickly ripped into the audience with a vigor that is hard to recreate. This set was bound to be special, but what the band delivered to fans feels almost insurmountable. The first part of the show felt pounding, a feeling of audible vibrations that can shake the sturdiest man to their core.

The_Stuffing_XII_11.18.2022-3.jpg

The middle of Manchester's set felt more intimate. Yes, the band knows how to shred a guitar and kick drums into your chest, but the songwriting is what drives their fans so rabid. Even on the loudest songs, Manchester Orchestra know how to create intimacy. A favorite from this side of the band was "The Sunshine", a short, but oh-so-sweet song about love. Sonically, the band as never sounded better than the second half of their set. I've seen them six times now, and they've been fantastic every time, but this stretch of music felt unparalleled to a lot of performances I've ever seen.

Manchester_Orchestra_11.18.2022-055.jpg

The band's encore felt like a victory lap. Nearly two decades of songwriting, touring, and grit culminated in what can only be described as victorious. Three of their biggest hits from three different chapters in the band's career, "The Gold" from their crossover hit album A Black Mile To The Surface , "Shake It Out" from their major label debut Mean Everything to Nothing , and "Where Have You Been?" off their debut album I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child , composed the core of the encore. The final song of the night, "Deer", saw Andy Hull and Robert McDowell, the two longest running members and primary songwriters, perform stripped back and intimate. The song ends on a 'thank you' to fans, a touching way to end such a wonderful night.

Manchester_Orchestra_11.18.2022-040.jpg

Nineteen songs and three tacked on snippets left the band performing for nearly two hours. It felt perfect, minus the exclusion of "I've Got Friends". The band covered material from across their expansive discography, their full setlist is below.

         1. 100 Dollars (ft. Julien Baker)

         2. pride,          3. keel timing,          4. bed head,          5. i can barely breathe,          6. april fool,          7. pensacola,          8. simple math,          9. i can feel a hot one -> cope,          10. colly strings,          11. everything to nothing,          12. i know how to speak -> the sunshine,          13. dinosaur,          14. the silence,          -,          15. no rule,          16. the maze -> the gold,          17. shake it out,          18. where have you been,          19. deer (stripped).

The_Stuffing_XII_11.18.2022-2.jpg

The Stuffing never fails to entertain. It truly feels like an event, it is a monumental show every year, not just for the fans but also the band. It serves as a pilgrimage of Manchester Orchestra fans. This year was no different, and I expect next year's to continue this trend. I highly recommend not only seeing any of the bands on this bill, but also attending a Stuffing at some point. It is an experience you won't soon forget.

Castlefield Bowl Sounds of the City 2024 - set times, support acts, how to get there and everything you need to know

The National, Jungle, Tom Grennan and Avril Lavigne are playing at the Sounds of the City festival at Castlefield Bowl this month

  • 14:24, 1 JUL 2024

Sounds of the City returns to Castlefield Bowl this month, with shows from the likes of Hacienda Classical, Avril Lavigne and Fatboy Slim

Sounds of the City returns to Castlefield Bowl this year with a stellar line-up featuring dance acts, 2000s pop-rock and classic indie hits.

Over the years, the summer concert series has featured performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Lewis Capaldi, Sam Fender, Kylie Minogue and Elbow. 2023’s line-up included The Lathums, Pulp, Hozier and Blossoms.

This year, Sounds of the City will see headline performances from the likes of Avril Lavigne, Manic Street Preachers, Fatboy Slim, Jungle and Tom Grennan across eight shows this month.

READ MORE: When is Glastonbury 2025 and how to get tickets for next year's festival

The shows will kick off on July 3 with Avril Lavigne, and will conclude on July 13 with a performance from Hacienda Classical featuring iconic dance anthems reimagined by a full orchestra.

Whilst the majority of the shows have now sold out, there are some limited tickets available via Ticketmaster . If you’re one of the lucky few that already has tickets to these special set of shows, then we’ve got the details you need to know - including getting there, support acts and which artist is performing when.

Castlefield Bowl returns for another year of live music, with eight shows this month

We are currently still waiting for set times from the promoters. Last year’s Sounds of the City shows saw doors open at 5.30pm, with most headliners taking to the stage between 8pm and 9pm. We will update details when we get confirmation for each show.

Some resale tickets will be available for a number of the shows. As always, it is important to note that many event promoters say tickets, sold on sites like Viagogo and Vivid Seats as two examples, should not be resold after initial purchase and will not be valid for admittance to gigs.

Fans attending live events with tickets acquired through resale websites are advised to double check the ticket terms and conditions at the point of sale - such as Ticketmaster or Live Nation - to ensure a smooth live event experience. Tickets could be voided if they were found to be bought second-hand. As a result, fans are buying at their own risk.

Avril Lavigne recently wowed crowds at Glastonbury 2024

Last September, the band released their tenth studio album Laugh Track, which was a top 40 hit here in the UK.
