Tour To Moray And Maras Salt Flats

One of the favorite tours among travelers is the Maras and Moray tour, which allows them to enjoy the landscapes and experiences of these towns and their attractions. We will pick you up from your hotel at around 7:30 a.m. and take you on a journey of approximately 1 hour to visit Moray . This site is considered an Inca agricultural laboratory due to its circular terraces that were used for cultivating and producing various crops.

Next, we will head to Maras (Villa San Francisco de Asís de Maras), the main supplier of salt. Here, you will witness the astonishing ingenuity and skill of the Incas in extracting this mineral, known as the "white gold of the Andes." The district of Maras was a mandatory stop for muleteers transporting tropical products, especially coca leaves, from the high jungle to Cusco (QOSQO).

Itinerary Maras and Moray - Tour to Moray and Salinas de Maras 1 Day

To start our Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour, we will pick you up from your hotel around 07:30 a.m. and then head to Moray and the Maras salt mines in our transportation. Along the way, you will enjoy beautiful Andean landscapes surrounded by trees and wildlife.

First, we will visit the Moray archaeological site , which is located 38 km from the city of Cusco. Moray is considered an Inca agricultural laboratory built in the shape of concentric circles. It consists of four platforms or circles, with the deepest depression reaching 80 meters and the lowest terrace having a diameter of 36 meters.

Inside the terraces, temperature variations range from 0.5 to 1.5 °C per terrace, creating up to 20 different microclimates. It is believed that the purpose of this archaeological site was to cultivate crops that wouldn't naturally grow in the area.

Next, we will visit the Maras salt mines . As the name suggests, these are salt mines composed of around 3,000 small pools, producing approximately 50 to 80 kilograms of salt per pool per season. It is said that during the Inca period, these salt mines supplied salt to Cusco and its surrounding areas. The pools are fed by an underground salty spring. This natural process takes about two months for each pool to be filled with salt. The Maras salt is highly sought after, with the highest-quality salt being the pink mineral salt. This salt also has medicinal properties, so don't forget to acquire some products made from this salt along the way.

Undoubtedly, both of these places hold a lot of history and interesting facts that our guide will share with you during the journey. After exploring these spectacular sites, our transportation will pick us up, and we will return to the city of Cusco. The tour will conclude around 2:00 p.m., marking the end of our Moray and Maras Salt Mines Tour .

Maras Moray Tour Half Day Trip From Cusco

The Maras Moray half-day tour takes you through a very unique aspect of Sacred Valley and shows you a peek into the knowledge and expertise of the ancient Incas. This area in the upper section of the Sacred Valley was dedicated to agricultural experiments and the production of salt. With views of over 3,000 salt pools and a perfectly-lined terrace, the Maras Moray day tour showcases the impressive creativity of ancient Incan communities.

Tour Location: Maras Moray and Chinchero are part of this half-day Sacred Valley tour

Maras Moray Trip Details

Travel info.

Sacred Valley is full of confounding features built by the Incas, and this tour covers some of the most impressive and unique sites in the valley. Maras Moray gives you an insider look into how the Incas produced and organized their agricultural and economic efforts through farming and salt production.

The Maras Salt Mine has over 3,000 salt pools, effectively producing salt for the Incas. The Moray terraces are mesmerizing circular farming strategies for testing different crop growth conditions.

This trip is excellent for guests who want an educational overview of the value of Sacred Valley and a scenic drive through a land filled with impressive mountain ranges, lush plains, and stunning valley views.

You’ll gain an exciting insight into salt mining and ancient farming experiments and visit a local Andean village market, all while taking in gorgeous views of Sacred Valley.

This is a fantastic half-day tour to explore part of the Sacred Valley. You will see amazing views of the Urubamba mountain ranges, the Veronica mountain, and the green valleys of farms. On this half-day trip, you will be able to learn about agriculture, textiles, and the history of the Incas.

The Maras Moray Tour Starts With a Scenic Drive Through Mountains, Wheat Fields, and Villages

We will pick you up from your hotel around 8 a.m. and head to the farming laboratory in Moray. This beautiful drive is about one hour and 20 minutes. On your drive, you will see the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, lush yellow fields of wheat, and some villages.

Visit the Impressive Terrace Designs in Moray

Finally, you will arrive at the fascinating display of terraces in Moray. Moray boasts three amphitheater-like terraces, made by the Incas. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth, in the shape of a bowl, were thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops.

Head To Maras for Stunning Salt Mine Views

When you are done exploring Moray, you will head about two miles away, to the salt mines of Maras. This village is known as a former salt-producing center and is thought to date back all the way to pre-Incan times. There are over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside, that are filled daily by a stream of water. This spectacular area is perfect for you if you wish to see something different than the ruins.

Explore a Village Market at “The Birthplace of the Rainbow”

Chinchero is a small Andean, Indian village located at 3,762 meters high, on the windswept plains of Anta, about 30 km from Cusco. There are beautiful views overlooking the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay dominating the western horizon. Chinchero is believed to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. Its major claim to tourism is its colorful Sunday market, which is much less tourist-orientated than the market at Pisac. Finally, you will get to visit the famous catholic roman church, which was built over the Inca palace.

Note: This market is held every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday but if your trip isn’t on one of these days, they have a smaller textile center open daily. There, you can watch a demonstration on how to make beautiful, natural sweaters from Alpaca wool.

Once you are done with the visit, you will head back to the city in time to enjoy some lunch on your own.

  • Professional Guide:  All of our guides studied English and tourism at Cusco National University. They all grew up in this region and have a true passion to teach others about their heritage. They are fun yet professional, and will ensure you are safe and happy.
  • Transportation:  You will be picked up from your hotel and transferred from site to site by a private Alpaca Expeditions vehicle.

Not Included

  • Entrance Fees:  You must have the tourist ticket to enter Moray. The tourist ticket is currently 70 soles for a one day ticket or 130 soles for a 10 day ticket. This one ticket will give you access to many other locations in the Sacred Valley, as well as some museums and places of interest in Cusco. Maras is a separate ticket of 10 soles.
  • Meals:  There are no meals served during this tour. You should be back in Cusco in time to enjoy lunch on your own.

Our day tours are done privately and the cost is based on your group size.

2 – 6 people: $250 total per group 7 – 13 people: $350 total 14 or more:  Will be arranged and priced by your Alpaca representative.

NOTE : We sometimes offer to combine private tours (with your permission) into smaller groups with a discount. Let us know if you would be open to others joining you.

As soon as people book their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco, they start wondering about altitude sickness. The air at high altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level and forces your body to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. Over several days at high altitude, your body adjusts to the lower amount of oxygen in the air. This is why we always recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before beginning any trek. If you have more time, even better. Cusco is an amazing city with a lot to do, so you won’t be bored.

With altitude sickness, you may first feel like you have the flu or a hangover. You may have a headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping, trouble breathing during exercise. If any of these effects become severe, please contact our office and we will help you get to a doctor.

Most of the time, these symptoms will be mild. We always recommend easing into activity slowly, allowing your body to adjust. Drink plenty of fluids such as water or coca tea. Coca tea has been used since ancient times to help prevent altitude sickness. Leaves from the coca plant contain alkaloids which helps bring oxygen into your blood, helping your body avoid the effects of altitude sickness. Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol and coffee. They will cause you to urinate more often and become dehydrated. Avoid smoking. Smoking makes it more difficult for your body to get oxygen. Avoid sleeping pills. They may cause shallow breathing at night, making it more difficult for your body to absorb oxygen while you sleep.

Remember the trek to Machu Picchu is not a race. Even those in the best shape will suffer from altitude sickness when they race to the top of the mountain too quickly. Go slowly, it will give your body time to adjust to the mountain.

Your healthcare provider may prescribe medicines, such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone, to help prevent altitude sickness. Start the medicine two days before you get to a high altitude. Continue to take it while you are at high altitude.

You must remember that this is your holiday and you do not want to stress out about the possibility of getting sick from the mountains. Do everything slowly. Drink lots of water. And enjoy the coca tea. If anything does happen and you unfortunately get sick, let your guide know right away – all Alpaca Expeditions guides are trained in how to help you get through it.

Of course weather is unpredictable. Typically the dry season in Cusco is from April through October, but this does not stop rain from falling in June or the sun from coming out in December – just be prepared. No matter what month you are doing the trek, please make sure that you have rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho and waterproof gloves. Many people forget about gloves, but being cold and wet makes hiking very unpleasant.

Also prepare for four seasons. Many of the treks through the Andes involve many micro-climates and you will need to be prepared for all seasons. Layers are always key as they are easy to adjust to the different temperatures. And evenings will always be cold, so please be prepared with a warm, winter-weight jacket.

Every Alpaca Expeditions guide has received training in first aid from a physician. We conduct mandatory training every February – every single Alpaca guide attends. When guiding you, they will have with them a first aid kit for basic medical problems (traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, scrapes, etc.) and oxygen. They know how to make you feel better.

In case something unexpected happens and you feel you can no longer complete the trek, they will figure out the safest and quickest way off the course and to a clinic. You will never be left alone; you will have a member of the team escort you every step of the way until safely with a doctor. When you are feeling up to it, we will make sure that you still have the chance to visit Machu Picchu and re-connect with your group, traveling by train comfortably.

Travel Insurance

Because there are so many logistics to plan and pay for before your trek occurs, payment for your trek is due even if you are unable to complete the hike. Please read our  Booking Conditions  carefully so you know what is due. Obtaining travel insurance before you leave home is strongly encouraged. This way, if something happens, and this is rare, you will not be out of pocket a tremendous amount of money. Alpaca will provide a letter and your invoice to submit to your insurance in this case to help expedite your processing.

Environmental Impact

Alpaca Expeditions uses biodegradable soap and transports all our garbage back to Cusco. Our porters are trained to look after the trail and pick up any waste from other groups, as well. We also use environmentally-friendly chemical portable toilets that allow us to pack waste out. We believe in leaving no footprint behind.

Alpaca Expeditions is really proud of the work we do for our community. This is a main focus for our company. We have worked with villages directly to help supply them with needs their families were missing. We have supported local schools by giving them computers and books. We currently sponsor a teacher at the village most of our porters come from to ensure their children are offered the best education.

We buy all our food from local farmers and markets and serve the freshest ingredients. We provide English classes for all our team: guides, porters, chefs and drivers. And we are building a house for our porters to give them a safe and comfortable place to stay before and after our treks so they no longer need to sleep on the floor of a friend.

And twice every year we bring our porters and their families to Machu Picchu. This is our favorite trip to do as the guys who work tirelessly have never visited the Lost Citadel of the Incas. Showing them this place is our biggest honor.

We are always looking to do more for our partners. Please let us know of your ideas and we will work to help.

Hotel to hotel service.

Regarding the transportation provided by Alpaca Expeditions, we are committed to delivering a quality service. We strive to ensure that passengers feel supported throughout their journey. To achieve this, we coordinate closely with our guides and representatives to ensure timely pick-up at the start of their tours. Additionally, we have representatives responsible for escorting our passengers to their hotels at the conclusion of any tour.

hotel to hotel service

Our drivers are not only trained in customer service but also come properly uniformed, and many are fluent in English.

Typically, all transportation types are included in each of our services. For instance, if you have booked a trekking tour, we will pick you up early, typically between 4 AM and 5 AM. When visiting Cusco, it's important to note that traffic here is generally moderate. However, there are peak traffic times, such as between 7 AM and 8 AM, which coincide with school hours, and in the evening between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Therefore, if you have a flight during these times, it's crucial to be at the airport at least 2 hours in advance. The drivers of Alpaca Expeditions ensure their vehicles are prepared with all necessities before each service. They are acutely aware that delays can lead to missed trains, flights, or other connections. Consequently, they are always more than punctual, arriving at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time for any service, understanding the responsibility they carry in executing these tasks.

Personal Porter of 7KG

Remember that Alpaca Expeditions offers an extra 7 kg allowance for your personal belongings on any of our tours. We include a personal porter who is responsible for carrying your duffel bag without any additional fee. You will not have access to your duffel bag until you reach your evening campsite. The bag should not exceed 7 kg, which includes 4 kg for clothes and 3 kg for your sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

personal porter

Each Alpaca Expeditions porter is paid directly after each trek, allowing them to return home more quickly. They receive better wages than our competitors, health insurance, and all their equipment free of charge, including hiking boots, pants, jerseys, fleeces, jackets, hats, flashlights, sleeping bags, and high-quality food. We ensure each of our porters has a comfortable bed in a pleasant room to sleep in before and after each trek. We also visit the communities they live in, providing toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, and other necessary supplies to their families, along with books for their children.

This is just the beginning for us, and we are always looking for ways to do more. While the government allows each porter to carry up to 25 kg, we limit this to 20 kg to prioritize their health and safety. Each porter carries up to 15 kg of company equipment and 5 kg of personal items. This is why it is crucial to keep your personal duffel bag weight under our 7 kg limit. You might see other companies allowing their porters to carry more than the allotted weight, but at Alpaca Expeditions, we strictly adhere to these limits to ensure our porters' well-being.

Clases de Cocina

Alpaca Expeditions offers its passengers the chance to experience local cooking. We aim to immerse trekkers in Inca life by walking them through the original Inca paths and teaching them about Inca culture. Food is a significant part of Inca life, making it a special element in any tour or trek with Alpaca Expeditions.

cooking classes

In 2022, Alpaca Expeditions introduced a cooking class as part of each of our treks, conducted by our amazing trekking chefs and interpreted by our guides.

We will transform your dining tent into a makeshift kitchen, providing all the necessary supplies to prepare a Peruvian specialty. Your chef will guide you step by step through the process of making a traditional Peruvian meal, such as Lomo Saltado, and share some essential mountain cooking tips.

Peru is recognized as a top culinary destination, largely thanks to the popularity of our renowned beef dish, Lomo Saltado. This is most often the meal you will learn to cook, but there is also the opportunity to learn how to prepare other dishes like traditional Peruvian ceviche or even our signature drink, the pisco sour.

Cooking Class on the Inca Trail: These classes are voluntary and designed to be a fun, educational experience. Our clients consistently marvel at the amazing ability of our chefs to create culinary magic on a mountaintop. As you learn to prepare and cook Peruvian specialties, you will also see firsthand how such elaborate meals can be created on a small campsite stove.

Enjoy a cooking class in the mountains and be sure to take plenty of photos, just in case your friends won't believe your incredible experience.

Satellite Phones

The best way to hike in the mountains of Peru is to completely disconnect from technology, especially the internet and cell phones. The most impressive and exciting aspect is the opportunity to experience the true and wonderful nature that we often miss when we are at home, watching TV or absorbed in our cell phones during our leisure time. The feeling of being disconnected from work and the daily routine left at home is incredible.

satellite phones

However, this remoteness means limited access to emergency resources. That's why Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones for every trek.

We are prepared to assist you in case of any emergency, particularly health-related issues. For this reason, Alpaca Expeditions has invested in satellite phones, as they are one of the most crucial tools for any operator trekking in remote areas where telephone or television signals are absent. This means that every guide on our treks will be equipped with a fully charged satellite phone as well as radios. While these are primarily for emergencies, we allow our clients to use them at any time.

We ask that you cover the cost, which is $2.50 per minute. This fee can be paid in cash at our office or via PayPal once you have completed the trek.

Being just a phone call away from any doctor, hospital, or friend helps everyone feel assured of their safety. Radios, which all our guides carry, have limited reach, so Alpaca Expeditions includes satellite phones to ensure that we can connect no matter where we are on the mountain.

Portable private toilet

We understand that our clients will need restroom facilities at various times and locations during their journey. Along the Inca Trail, there are restrooms available, particularly those belonging to the communities near the trail. Alpaca Expeditions provides portable toilets to enhance this service, which will be set up at each meal site or campsite.

toilet tent

As with any mountain trip where we are exposed to nature, it is possible to use natural areas as restrooms. However, it is crucial to be mindful of the waste we generate, such as toilet paper or wet wipes used for cleaning. These should be carried with us and not discarded on the ground or left along the trail. Remember, the Inca Trail is a protected area overseen by a government institution. In places where garbage bins are unavailable, particularly at our camps, we provide special plastic bags for waste. Our porter team will be responsible for carrying out our waste.

Please be aware that although there are designated bathrooms for men and women, in practice, both genders often use the same facilities. Functionally, there is no significant difference between men's and women's bathrooms. Therefore, it is common for people of all genders to use whichever bathroom is available.

Tucked in the scenic landscapes of the Sacred Valley area, near Cusco, Peru, is the the famous Salt Mines and Moray ruins, an enchanting place waiting to be explored. Learn more about the facinating sites you will explore during this half day tour from Cusco.

Maras Salt Mines

The Maras Salt Mines, also referred to as Salineras de Maras, are a historic salt mining site located in the Sacred Valley of Peru, near the town of Maras. These salt mines have been in use since pre-Inca times and are still actively maintained by local families today.

Historical Significance: These salt pans, which date back to pre-Inca times, have been used for salt extraction for centuries. The salt harvesting method has remained virtuallly unchanged since the time of the Inca Empire, making it a living heritage.

Salt Production:  The salt ponds are fed by a natural salt spring that emerges from a nearby mountain. The salt water flows into individual pools arranged in terraces. When the water evaporates under the Andean sun, it leaves crystallized salt, which is carefully harvested by local families. This traditional process, handed down from generation to generation, produces one of the finest and purest salts in the world.

A visit to the Maras Salt Mines is a unique opportunity to witness a centuries-old tradition in a stunning natural setting. We believe this is a testament to the enduring cultural practices carried out by the Andean people and offers an unforgettable experience for those exploring the Sacred Valley of Peru.

Moray Ruins

The Moray ruins is located in Peru’s Sacred Valley near Cusco, the site is an extraordinary archaeological site not to be missed. This fascinating ancient site consists of a series of concentric agricultural terraces carved out of a natural depression in the ground.

Agricultural Experimentation:  It is believed that Moray was an agricultural laboratory for the Incas, where they carried out experiments with crops at different altitudes and microclimates. It is believed that Moray was an agricultural laboratory for the Incas, where they carried out experiments with crops at different altitudes and microclimates. The terraces, placed in concentric circles, allow for temperature variations that mimic different ecological regions. This allowed the Incas to test and develop different varieties of crops.

Mysteries and Theories: Yet, despite its importance, many questions about Moray are still unanswered. The exact use of the site for agricultural experiments continue to intrigue archaeologists.

The price for our Maras and Moray tour (Group Tour) is per person, the price does not vary if there are more participants in the group. Typically this tour must be paid in cash the day before the tour at the latest, if you have not paid then you will not be picked up on the day of the activity.

The half-day MARAS, MORAY & SALINERAS TOUR visits a colonial town, circular Inca terraces, and salt mines, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

This tour is a lovely way to begin acclimatizing to the high altitude of Cusco and get ready for a trek if you have booked one.  MARAS  is a beautiful little town that maintains some of its architectural colonial charm. You can see amazing facades made of thin stone, lintels with sculptures in bas-relief and learn about textile weaving. At the  MORAY  ruin site, located at 3,450m/11,319ft, you can explore circular agricultural terraces with a complex system of irrigation. These terraces served as a natural green house to grow an extraordinary variety of crops at an altitude that they would typically only grow in the tropical Andes. It has also been suggested that they had a cosmological meaning. SALINERAS is a vast salt mine set in a breathtaking little valley in the Andean mountains. This tour has become quite popular recently and can be added on to any other treks or tours to have the complete Cusco experience!

Minimum passengers necessary for tour departure: 2 people (small group, 1 person or private/custom treks possible with extra fee). Maximum trekkers per group: 10 people (special, private party groups can exceed maximum).

Yes, we do cater to any dietary restriction. We have had many people join our trips who are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, and have various other intolerances and/or allergies. Just inform us well in advance of your specific needs!

WHEN TO GO & DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY

Year-round, though the best weather is usually seen between March/April to November (or dry season). This tour is rated as easy to moderate as it involves gentle walking at each site. This is a great acclimatizing day tour as it is gentle walking at a lower altitude than Cusco. Please note if the weather is very poor the trail could be dangerous and we may have to cancel the trip and may be able to substitute another day hike or day tour instead, depending on the circumstances.

COVID 19 PRACTICES

We take your health and that of our staff very seriously. We adhere to the recommended rules as outlined by the Peruvian Government, including border closures, trail closures, face-covering orders, quarantine orders, negative COVID19 test results, and the eventual need for proof of COVID19 vaccination. We have instituted a number of increased hygiene precautions for food preparation and treks/tours outlined below. Face coverings will be worn at all times by the guide/staff and are required of guests in towns and ruin sites and anywhere else it is mandated per Peruvian rules. Social distancing will be observed to the best of our ability, especially along the trail if you wish to remove face coverings while hiking. Increased hand hygiene will be practiced and temperatures checked daily. Anyone exhibiting COVID19 symptoms will need to self-quarantine.

Machu Picchu has been declared a Safe Travels destination. In line with the good news that Peru is opening to a wider range of international visitors, we have updated our safety protocols to help keep you safe while you are travelling with us.

Trips will take place in small groups (8 people per group, including guide), and according to the instructions we receive from the Ministry of Tourism. All of our transport will continue to be private services.

Our guides, drivers, and representatives:

  • Will wear masks and use antibacterial gel at all times
  • Will be monitored continuously with temperature and symptom checks. If anyone has symptoms, they will be obliged to rest and recover, and substituted with other staff members

We will ensure social distancing by:

  • Keeping 1-meter distance between passengers when boarding vehicles.
  • Restricting physical contact between our staff and customers.

To add to your packing list:

  • Cloth or medical face masks
  • Face shields
  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
  • Disinfectant wipes (at least 70% alcohol) for surfaces
  • Digital thermometer

We recommend the following steps to protect yourself and others when you travel:

  • Always maintain a distance of 6 feet (2 meters) between you and others
  • Avoid crowds
  • Wear a face mask and a face shield
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Do not travel if you are feeling sick
  • Disinfect your hands often. It’s especially important after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 30 seconds
  • If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry

With our updated protocol, we hope to offer you a safe stay without compromising on our excellent service. We will continue adapting our standards according to the recommendations of health experts.

The Inca Trail 2D is open again as of Nov 2020 with a capacity of 150 people per day (down from 500).

We do not have confirmation as yet for the Classic Inca Trail 4D but we will keep you posted.   There are vulnerable communities along this trail and they are being closely monitored by the Peruvian Government.

The minister has informed that only 675 people will be allowed inside Machu Picchu per day, which is 30% of its capacity pre-pandemic.

Visitors will enter in groups of 8, with a tour guide, and will need to maintain a distance of 1.5-2 meters apart. Visitors will only be permitted entry when accompanied by a professional guide and have their tickets booked through a registered travel agent, such as Killa Expeditions.

All of the above information is subject to change. Right now Peru has opened its borders to most countries but we recommend checking specifics for your country as these are updated regularly.

Wishing you happy and safe travels!

DONATING/VOLUNTEERING

Helping Local Children or Andean People (Optional) Along certain treks we may encounter some local children and Andean people.  If you wish to lend a helping hand you may bring some clothes, toys, books and school equipment (used or new), toiletries and other essentials, and new/sealed medication for a variety of ailments.  You will be rewarded with their gratitude and beautiful smiles. There are a variety of other ways in which to lend a helping hand to local communities (charity events, building schools, and much more). We support several local communities so if interested please get in touch!

Departure & Return Location

Tour details.

During this tour we will observe the Cordillera del Vilcanota and its impressive Nevados that extend throughout the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will visit the following places: Town of Maras where the houses still preserve their colonial facades, the Archaeological Complex of Moray made up of several circular platforms that served as an agricultural laboratory in the Inca era and finally we will appreciate the Salineras de Maras; made up of hundreds of small pools of salt water and where currently the members of the community still produce salt.

Maras Moray

Many archaeologists and anthropologists believe that the Moray ruins were once used as a means of conducting agricultural experiments. Part of the evidence to support this is the extensive irrigation system (fed by water from a reservoir located high in the mountains) designed into the terraces.

Another fascinating observation is the temperature difference. From the highest to the lowest terrace, the temperature differs by 5°C and the sun hits each terrace at a different angle and intensity.

Moray’s microclimate likely allowed the Incas to conduct agricultural research and identify the best conditions for crops to thrive. Furthermore, all of this suggests that the Incas used their knowledge of the environment to capitalize on their natural resources.

Las Salineras de Maras is made up of more than 3,000 natural salt wells near the town of Maras. Each of the wells have a dimension of 5 square meters.

The 3,000 pools are fed by an underground hypersaline spring that originated 110 million years ago during the formation of the Andes Mountains.

Currently, these natural salt pools attract hundreds of tourists. The view that you get from this landscape is beautiful.

The people of Maras market this salt, just as the Incas did hundreds of years ago.

CUSCO - MARAS MORAY - CUSCO

The MORAY complex is located 7 kilometers from MARAS in the SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS, 38 kilometers northwest of Cusco. During the tour, we will observe traditional communities surrounded by beautiful landscapes. We will visit the MORAY complex, which was an agricultural research center where crop experiments were conducted at different altitudes. Then, we will visit the MARAS SALINERAS, which has over 3,000 salt pools of various sizes and dimensions. These pools belong to local families who take advantage of the salt generated during dry weather, treat it with iodine, and sell it in the market. After our visit, we will return to the city of Cusco. The transport will drop us off 2 to 3 blocks from the main square of Cusco.

We decided to organize a private visit with them with private transportation from Cusco on the same day. Everything was organized in the best possible way. The tickets were delivered to us the day before directly at the hotel by a guide who explained the program to us in detail. The whole day went smoothly with timely support from the agency. Splendid day. Super recommended! (TripAdvisor)

Everything was just exceptional

This was a good trip. We visited two main sites of the Sacred Valley of Incas on this half day trip. They took good care of us and the guide was nice too. All in all it’s recommendable. (TripAdvisor)

natashat612

Nice Service but…

We did the city ruins and the Maras and Moray. City tour was fine but I found it a little bit rushed, wished we had more time to explore. As for Maras and Moray, the tour was great with explanations and the guide gave us enough time to walk around and take photos. The down side was that they dropped us very far away from Plaza de Armas, even though the itinerary said that the drop off will be at the plaza. (TripAdvisor)

DESCRIPTIVE OF PLACES TO VISIT

Maras and Moray were two very important places during the time of the Incas due to their respective uses. Nowadays, these magical places showcase their best versions through experimental practices and trade. This experience allows us to discover:

  • Maras: The town was founded by the Spanish in 1556 and played a vital role during the viceroyalty as the main supplier of salt in the Andes. Currently, the Maras salt mines consist of approximately 4,500 salt pools arranged in terraced steps. The salt production process in Maras remains strictly communal, with no external involvement. It involves filling clean pools with saltwater from a spring, guided by a system of channels. This liquid is left to evaporate for three days, repeating this practice for a month. During this period, a layer of crystallized salt with a thickness of 7 to 10 centimeters is achieved. The salt is extracted in layers, resulting in different commercial grades: the first, is for domestic use. The second, of lower quality, is known as “first-grade salt”. Finally, the third, called “industrial salt”, is used for industrial, agricultural, and livestock purposes.
  • Moray: An archaeological complex located at 3,500 meters above sea level, famous for its platforms arranged in concentric rings that create a visually stunning spectacle, where the symmetry of its forms blends astonishingly with the vibrant greenery of the surrounding vegetation. This panoramic view is a breathtaking experience and pays tribute to the exceptional skill of the ancient Inca builders. According to research, this place served the function of adapting seeds of various products to the different altitudinal levels in the Sacred Valley. This allowed for a wide variety of products in each location and also gave rise to new varieties. The use of spectral thermometers determined that each circular terrace has a different temperature, enabling more efficient adaptation as the climate in the entire region is always changing.
  • Chinchero: Textile activity was another key foundation within the Inca civilization, and that’s why the town of Chinchero stands out. Its tradition of working with Alpaca wool, from obtaining it, washing, dyeing, and spinning, has been passed down from generation to generation. This town also has its history over the years. Initially, the tenth Inca, Tupac Yupanqui, designated his palace to live in this place. With the passage of time and the arrival of the Spanish, the Temple to the Virgin of Monserrat was built on this site. During the colonial period, this was also the residence of Mateo Pumacahua. Today, this picturesque town has much to show the world with its beautiful temple featuring paintings by famous Cusco artists like Diego Quispe Tito and Francisco Chihuantito. You’ll also find numerous terraces and a large esplanade that finely adorn its surroundings.

What’s included?

  • Professional English speaking Tour Guide.
  • Tourist transportation to explore the towns of Chinchero, Maras, and Moray.
  • Entrance tickets: Partial Tourist Ticket (Moray) and entrance ticket to Maras.

NoT IncluDeD

Meals not mentioned in the package.

Tips or extra expenses.

Do I need to hire a travel agency?

It is not mandatory; you can access the archaeological sites by presenting your Partial Tourist Ticket (PTT) or General Tourist Ticket (GTT). However, it is recommended to have the support of a reliable and formal travel agency like TOUR IN PERU , which will guide you during the experience and ensure a hassle-free visit.

Is the experience physically demanding?

Not at all! Most of the time, we travel by vehicle to the access points. The walk in the archaeological center of Moray is short and calm, just like in the salt mines of Maras, it does not require much effort.

What is the best travel season?

Cusco offers a variety of captivating climates throughout the year. Two seasons stand out:

  • Dry season (April – October): Sunny and pleasant days with infrequent rain, ideal for enjoying the landscape and a favorite choice for many travelers.
  • Rainy season (November – March): Although rain is more common, the nature of the sanctuary and its surroundings take on a more vivid tone. Additionally, being less crowded, spaces are more available for us.

These tips and key details will help you plan your travel experience in an informed manner and make the most of your visit in each season.

What to bring?

Rain poncho, waterproof jacket, T-shirts, sun hat, Gloves, scarf, trekking shoes, and Light clothing for the day.

Maras Moray and Chinchero Tour

Maras moray and chinchero tour.

The Maras, Moray and Chinchero half-day tour takes you to the agricultural laboratory of the Incas and the salt mines of Maras. We will take a private van from Cusco, passing the Andean villages and enjoying the green, yellow barley fields. This journey also includes spectacular views of the  Sacred Valley  mountain range and beautiful lakes.

On arrival, we start the guided tour of  Moray , the ancient Inca agricultural laboratory. Here the Incas expertly domesticated and acclimated plants to different micro climates. After visiting Moray, we head towards the shining salt mines  (Salineras) of  Maras , where a natural spring fills approximately 4,000 salt pans for collecting salt.

PRIVATE MARAS MORAY AND CHINCHERO TOUR

Chinchero, Maras, and Moray are three must-visit places in the Cusco region of Peru. These three places offer a unique and unforgettable experience for travelers looking to explore the beauty and culture of this South American country. A private tour of these three locations will allow visitors to delve deeper into their history, traditions, and natural wonders.

Chinchero is a small Andean village known for its rich cultural heritage. The town is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and traditional farming communities. A private tour of Chinchero will take visitors through its historic center, where they can witness the blending of Incan and colonial architecture. The tour will also include a visit to the traditional market, where travelers can purchase handmade textiles and learn about the intricate weaving techniques used by the locals.

Maras is a town famous for its salt mines, located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. A private tour of Maras will take visitors through the stunning salt pans that have been used since Incan times. Travelers will learn about the traditional salt-extraction methods that are still used by the locals today. The tour will also include a visit to the Maras village, where visitors can interact with the friendly locals and learn about their way of life.

Moray is an archaeological site located near Maras, known for its impressive circular terraces. These terraces were used by the Incas for agricultural experiments, and the site is a testament to their advanced knowledge of farming techniques. A private tour of Moray will allow visitors to explore the different levels of the terraces and learn about the unique microclimates created by the varying elevations. Itinerary & Map

Maras, moray and chinchero tour half day.

Maras, Moray and Chinchero Private Tour starts with a pick up from your hotel in Cusco at 8:00 am, and head to the ancient agricultural terraces of Moray. This scenic drive is about one hour and 30 minutes. On your drive, you will see the Snowy Mountains of the Andes, lush yellow fields of barley, and some villages.

The archaeological park of  Moray  boasts four amphitheater-like terraces, made by the Incas. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth, in the shape of a bowl, were thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops.

After our visit to Moray, we will proceed to our next destination and visit the amazing salt pans of Maras. The town of Maras  is famous for its colonial door arches and its large Catholic Church. We will stop in its plaza for few minutes and head towards the salt mines. This natural wonder is an incredible spectacle of beauty.

Formed by a natural underground salt-stream, the salt has been harvested since pre-Inca times by evaporating the water from the spring in small pools. The flow emerges at a stream, and as it flows towards the floor of the valley, is weaves through an intricate system of channels where it is collected into the hundreds of ancient terraced ponds. Here, you will have the chance to buy pink salt and souvenirs at nearby shops.

Finally, we will stop in Chinchero to experience the weaving demonstration process. At the end, we head back to Cusco and drop you off at the hotel.

Tour details.

Maras and Moray Tour takes you to two prime sites of Peru. These sites are located remotely in the Sacred Valley of Incas . Both sites had a unique importance and distinct use during the Incan civilisation.

Maras is popular for salt pans. They are nestled on the slope of a hill side. These salt pans have been in use since pre Inca times. The locals here have been practising the salt farming techniques just as it was during the olden days. There is no mechanism and it is completely manual.

The farmers here let the natural spring water flow into these geometric shaped puddles. When the water evaporates, it leaves behind crystallised salt. The salt farmers then scrape out the salt. The salt is pinkish in colour and is highly nutritious and had a distinct taste.

Moray has been a prime agricultural centre for Incas. The site has a circular shaped agricultural terrace. It resembles a bit of Roman amphitheatre. To Incas this was more like and agricultural research laboratory. These circular terraces have varied temperatures at each level. This made them learn the growth conditions of crops at different climatic conditions.

We operate the tour both in group and private.

If you are feeling a bit adventurous, check out our tour on ATV Quad Bikes and Bike Tour to Maras Moray.

Once at the entrance of the site, our guide will assist you to get your entrance ticket. Then we will give a guided tour of the archaeological site. There are three amphitheater-like terraces made by the Incas. These terraces, are carved deep into the earth in a bowl shape. They were thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions of growth of crops. Once you have had your fill of the history, we will drive you to see Maras Salt Flats.

This village is known as the salt-producing centre. It has been in use since the pre-Inca times. There are over 3000 salt ponds. Each of these are carved on a hill side. The salt farmers let in the natural spring water into these geometric shaped puddles. Which when evaporates, leaves behind the crystals of salt. They them scrape them out manually.

After relishing the natural beauty of Sacred Valley, we will start our journey back to Cusco. Along the way we will stop at Chinchero. It is home to a colonial church. The village has the most fertile soil in the Sacred Valley . People living here are known for their handicrafts. We will spend a couple of hours seeing the traditional Andean method of knitting and weaving.

After touring the two iconic Inca sites, we will continue our drive back to Cusco. We will drop you off at Plaza Kusipata (Plaza Regocijo). It is a block away from the main square.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the fascinating  circular terraces of Moray , which is located at (3,450meter /11,318 feet). The size of the terraces is really impressive! Although it seems like an amphitheater, this mysterious circular place is a gigantic Inca agricultural laboratory.

  • The  archeological site of Moray  boasts three amphitheater-like terraces – large, medium and small, all made by Incas. These different levels of terraces were carved and built into a huge bowl with their complex system of irrigation. The Moray Inca site is thought they were used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops.

Once you’ve finished exploring Moray, you’ll head to the village of Maras, a colonial town built, during the Spanish invasion to exploit the Salt mines located near the village. In the  Maras’ town  you can see the ancient ways, the colonial architecture with beautiful church built-in 1650, where its images of lintels with sculptures in bas-relief are still preserved.

After your Maras visit, you’ll continue driving for 30 more minutes to the  Maras salt mines . This place is famous for its salt production dating back to ancient times. There are more than 3,000 wells of salt, carved into the mountain side that is filled daily with groundwater. It was the main provider salt  center to Cusco  and it’s still even today for many communities around and the  Sacred Valley , where locals still farm the salt by hands as the Incas used to do it centuries ago. You’ll also have a surreal landscape at your disposal to take the best photographs.

It’s time to return to Cusco, but don’t worry, the tour is not over yet! On our way back, we’ll stop at the beautiful  Huaypo Lagoon . Another great place to take photos located high up on the windswept plains of  Anta  at 3,657 meters high! Full Itinerary

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 8:00 am or 12:30 pm ( you can choose a morning or afternoon tour ) and drive for 1 hour to Moray  (3,450 m/11,318 ft), the circular terraces used by the Incas for agricultural experiments, which is a great way to learn about the innovative farming practices of this ancient civilization. The stunning natural scenery and impressive Inca sites make for a memorable experience.

Next, you will drive 30 minutes to Maras (3385 m/11105 ft), a small town in the Sacred Valley of Peru, about 40 kilometers northwest of Cusco. The city is known for its rich history, stunning natural scenery, and traditional salt production methods. Visitors can stroll through the narrow streets, admire the traditional adobe houses, and visit the beautiful colonial church built during the Spanish invasion.

The tour's highlight is Salineras of Maras (3200 m/10498 ft), just 20 minutes from Maras. The Salineras have been in use since pre-Inca times, and the traditional methods of salt production are still used today. The ponds are owned and operated by local families who harvest the salt through evaporation, which can take up to a month. Once harvested, the salt is sold in local markets or used for traditional purposes. There are over 3000 salt ponds, and the harvesting process is truly fascinating and makes for a great photo opportunity.

Finally, we will drive 40 minutes to Chinchero (3,762 m/12,343 ft), where you can see traditional textile production and visit a colorful market, allowing visitors to shop and support local artisans.

The people of Chinchero are known as expert weavers, and they use a variety of natural fibers, including alpaca, llama, and sheep wool, to create beautiful textiles. They use various techniques, including spinning, dyeing, and weaving, to create intricate patterns and designs that reflect the culture and history of the region.

In Chinchero, you will also visit the Inca site and the colonial church and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After the tour, you will return to your hotel in Cusco.

The tour can be customized; add Ollantaytambo or explore in a full day!

Places we visit on this tour

Moray (circular terraces).

Moray is an archaeological site in the Sacred Valley of the Incas at  3385 m (11105 ft). It is known for its unique circular terraces, which the Inca Empire built in the 15th century.

The circular terraces at Moray are arranged in a series of concentric circles and are believed to have been used for agricultural experiments by the Inca. The terraces have varying depths and temperatures, which created microclimates that allowed the Inca to test the growth of different crops in different conditions.

The site also includes a complex of buildings and irrigation channels used to control water flow to the terraces and store agricultural products. The buildings at Moray are believed to have been used for ceremonial and administrative purposes.

They are also known as the " Ciudad de las Portadas,"  a nickname given to the town of Maras due to its numerous colonial-era doorways and arches, known as "portadas" in Spanish. These doorways are a distinctive feature of the town's architecture and are highly valued for their historical and cultural significance.

Many of the "portadas" in Maras are made of carved stone and feature intricate designs and motifs. They were built by Spanish colonizers in the 16th and 17th centuries and were used to mark the entrances to important buildings and homes.

The "portadas" is an important part of Maras' cultural heritage, and the town takes great pride in preserving them. The local government has implemented measures to protect and restore the doorways. Visitors to Maras can take guided tours to learn about the history and significance of these unique architectural features.

Salt ponds (Salineras of Maras)

The Salt Ponds of Maras, also known as Salineras de Maras, is a series of salt evaporation ponds in the Sacred Valley at 3200 m (10498 ft). The salt ponds have been used since pre-Columbian times and are still operated using traditional methods today.

The salt ponds are situated on a steep hillside just outside the town of Maras and cover an area of several hectares. They consist of thousands of small terraced pools that are filled with salty water from a natural underground stream. The water is left to evaporate in the sun, leaving behind salt crystals that local families harvest.

The salt from the Salineras de Maras is highly valued for its purity and unique flavor. It is used for cooking and preserving food, as well as for medicinal and ceremonial purposes. The salt is also an important source of income for local families, who work together to maintain the ponds and harvest the salt.

Chinchero(land of great weavers)

Chinchero is a small Andean town located at 3,762 m (12,343 ft). It is known as the " Land of Great Weavers " due to the town's rich textile traditions, passed down through generations. The local people are skilled in weaving intricate patterns and designs into textiles using traditional techniques and natural dyes.

Chinchero is also home to a beautiful archaeological site with a large colonial church built on top of an Inca palace. The church, known as the Church of Our Lady of Monserrat, was built by the Spanish in the early 17th century using stones taken from the nearby Inca site.

The Inca palace, located underneath the church, is believed to have been built by the Inca ruler Tupac Yupanqui. The palace featured impressive stonework and a large central courtyard and was likely used for ceremonial and administrative purposes.

In addition to its cultural and historical significance, Chinchero is known for its stunning views of the Andes Mountains and its vibrant local markets, where visitors can purchase handcrafted textiles and other artisanal goods.
