Graphite Design Tour AD IZ Shaft Review

The Graphite Design Tour AD IZ shaft produces high launch and low spin with a unique feel.

Check out the low launch, low spin Tour AD VF HERE

Introduction

Graphite Design is a no-nonsense company.  Every year, they release one or two new shafts with relatively modest fanfare (we reviewed the excellent Tour AD TP earlier this year).  If you need giant social media campaigns, there are shaft companies that give you that.  If you just want solid performance, check out GD.

tour ad low launch shaft

Appropriate for this time of year, the Graphite Design AD IZ sports an orange and matte black color scheme .  This look is the inverse of one of their most successful models, the Tour AD DI .

Graphically, Graphite Design always plays it straight: simple branding below the handle with a shift in the base color.  This is an all-business look for the serious player, and it’s immediately recognizable as Graphite Design.

tour ad low launch shaft

On paper, the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ is similar to the Tour AD DI .  The company’s website  describes the AD IZ as being Firm+ in the tip, Medium in the middle, and Firm in the butt.  The AD DI has the same Medium mid section, but the tip is Stiff (half a notch firmer than the AD IZ) and the butt is Medium (a whole notch softer).

That similarity transfers over to the real world.  The tip is extremely stable in both shafts.

What’s different is that the AD IZ doesn’t kick the way the AD DI does; it feels like the energy flows from the handle to the club head .  This is slightly unusual – it’s more common for a shaft to have that distinct bend point – but it’s a great feel once you get used to it.

Performance

What struck me during my testing of the Tour AD IZ was the consistency .  In my first few swings, I struggled with the feel simply because it’s different than what I’ve been gaming.  However, that smooth, whip-crack feel was the same swing after swing, so I was able to get locked in with it quickly.

Once I was dialed in, I saw exactly the ball flight that Graphite Design describes: high launch and low spin .  With the stable tip, I was able to swing hard without a fear of “losing” the shaft.  On the other hand, the feel was so smooth that I could swing easily and still feel it working.  Whether swinging hard or soft, I was able to control the ball flight and maintain near-optimal distance.

The Tour AD IZ is available in a wide range of weights and flexes .  The lightest is 40 grams, available in Lite/Senior and Regular flex.  It’s also important to note that the 40 gram version has a very different profile – a soft tip with medium mid and butt sections.  Every flex from Senior to X is available at 50 grams, with the 50-X being a first for Graphite Design.  The 60 gram model has Regular, Stiff, and X versions.  Only big swingers – Stiff and X – need apply for the 70 or 80 gram models.

tour ad low launch shaft

The Tour AD IZ enhances the Graphite Design line-up by adding a unique feel that still has the consistency that players of all levels want.  If you’re looking to get your drives “Into the Zone” of high launch and low spin, the AD IZ is definitely worth a look.

I had a GD Purple Ice in a driver and felt it was the best shaft I’ve ever used. Great kick at the correct point and consistent ball flight. Tried a GD YS 6 afterward and it was not satisfying. This sounds similar in feel, so I’d be game to try it.

' src=

Just got the iz 6x , I have played a Mitsubishi blue board 62 stiff in my last 5 drivers. Never really believed a shaft could add a noticeable amount of distance. This one is an easy 10 to 15 yards farther and accurate. I did not get fitted but I borrowed 5 different shafts and just liked the feel of this one. It’s still the player and the swing, but when I swing easy, man it goes. Tp 7 handicap

' src=

Tour AD IZ vs DI for Driver and 3 wood? Swing speed is close to yours.

' src=

If you’re asking which I would play, I’d choose the DI. If you’re asking for a recommendation for yourself, I would say to go work with a fitter.

' src=

What is the loft of your driver you tested with Tour AD IZ?

9 degree PING G400.

' src=

Hi Matt, Why would you choose the DI over the IZ? Feel or just better performance?

The two are connected. The feel of the DI is more comfortable for me, so it performs a bit more consistently. Or perhaps more accurately, I perform more consistently with it.

' src=

I’m in the process of researching shafts to put into my new 3 wood. How would compare the IZ to the Atmos Red Tour Spec in terms of feel and performance?

I have a full review of the ATMOS Tour Spec line here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-atmos-shaft-review/

' src=

Did you tip the shaft at all? In the past I have been an DI 7x, and 8x tipped more. I’m looking for a little more stability with less work. Would the IZ be a perfect in-between going in the 6tx and 7tx

I did not tip it, installed it straight in.

' src=

I’m playing the AD IZ5 X at 46″ in a Mizuno driver and think it’s the best shaft I’ve hit in a long time. It is very accurate, consistent, long, and great feeling. A real winner!

' src=

Im getting fitted for a new driver next week. His previous recommendation for my previous driver was the Tour AD MJ but I will try out the DI this time out. Unfortunately they do not the new IZ available for testing. If the DI is recommended how do I go about choosing between the DI and the IZ as they both have similar characteristics?

I’m not trying to be funny or rude, but if the DI is recommended by your fitter, get the DI. Don’t overthink it.

' src=

Matt, does this feel and launch similar to the PX Evenflow black? Thanks…Ed

In my opinion, the EvenFlow Black has a feel that’s substantially different than the AD IZ. Launch will depend on how the individual mixes with each shaft.

Which of the two shafts you would choose to play in a 2 sim dhy iron (more pentrating flight and low spin) and 4 sim dhy iron (higher flight and more mid spin?)

What two shafts am I choosing between?

sorry the text was incomplete. I am not able to have a fitting in the country i live and i would like suggestion which shaft you would reccomend between AD DI and AD IZ to play with the SIM DHY #2 and #4 irons. I currently play AD DI 65 grams Stiff regular in the driver and TGI 80 stiff in the irons. Thank you!

I have only tested the AD IZ hybrid shaft. I would suggest that if you’re comfortable with the IZ in your driver, try that in your hybrids, too.

' src=

You answer are never to the point you should test more . Or don’t answer.

' src=

Angelo Morgan you illiterate Muppet. You should beat it with that idiotic comment.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have a tendency to over draw the driver. I’m currently using the GD Tour AD DI 7 Stiff in my Driver. Do you think the GD Tour AD IZ 7 Stiff would help straighten out the drives? Or would you have a recommendation to try? Barry.

It’s possible, but not a guarantee. I always recommend getting a fitting rather than buy-and-try because you’ll get to see the results before you spend the money.

' src=

Hello is this the closest to the YS in the Tour AD range? Thank you and stay safe

I don’t have enough experience with the YS to say for certain.

' src=

Hi Matt, looking to pair up a woods shaft to my irons modus 120s – would the IZ be a good match in terms of feel? Cheers

That combo might work for you, but I wouldn’t say those two shafts are similar in feel to me.

Graphite Design Tour AD VF Shaft Review

Lucky for us, Graphite Design has released a second shaft in 2023 – the Tour AD VF “Victory Force.” This sleek black and red shat fits the low spin, low-to-mid launch profile and one of the stiffest tip sections out of all their offerings.  As you come to expect, the AD VF offers the best of modern materials in Japanese golf design and manufacturing.

Looks 5

It’s been a few iterations since we’ve seen the boldest and most vibrant Graphite Design graphics show up! In previous years, we had the iconic and vibrant Tour AD DI, older classics like the highlighter yellow AD MT, or the shimmering turquoise AD UB . Like this year’s other earlier release in the AD CQ , this shaft comes in with a glossy black base color. The new Tour AD VF is accented by a deep red…

My opinion is that it’s traditional and classy, and very understated. A bit “stealthy” if you get what I’m saying. Depending on your level of nerdiness, you can even think of it as a Sith Lightsaber too!

Graphite Tour AD VF 3

How Does it Feel?

The Graphite Design Tour AD VF has, in my opinion, one of the more unique feels of any shaft that the company offers. This company has attained a reputation for smoothness which you’ll often hear people comment on regardless of which shaft you choose from the family. You never hear “boardy” or “unstable” or “loose” when talking about Graphite Design.

For the AD VF, the company has created a profile that moves from firm to very stiff (their terms) as you move from the handle to the tip. They’re using TORAYCA M40X and T1100G carbon fiber materials to create those sensations in this shaft. And yeah, you can feel that. For me, the AD VF has the expected smooth feel, but a much more satisfying kick at the end. I think back a few years to the AD XC which also started softer at the handle and gradually stiffened to the tip. Having it just a bit tighter in the hands really makes this one fun.

Graphite Tour AD VF 1

On-Course Performance

I got a chance to spend two weeks testing my current favorite, the Graphite Design AD CQ, alongside the AD VF at my home away from home, Marquette Golf Club’s Greywalls course. It’s a demanding driving course and while length is not imperative, hitting the right shot shapes is a must. I tried to hit bombs, tried to flight it, and quite possibly mixed in a few absolute stinkers in there too.

While Graphite Design slots this in as a low to mid flight shaft, I felt my stock swing here kept it closer to mid than low. Good shots started low, but it seemed to keep rising to nearly the same peaks and windows as the AD CQ (which is a much higher launching profile on paper). Visually, I did not think this spun as much as the AD CQ either, but it didn’t cruise through the wind like the lowest of the low spin shafts I’ve hit. I’m not a huge swing speed player, so the truly fast players may experience it slightly different.

The adjustment period I had with this one was getting rid of the big slice. That very stiff tip sometimes makes it hard to close the club face, but that’s more of my issue! I’d even say that it helps keep that left side out of play for me. I felt like I could give the AD VF everything I had. It held up well to both aggressive swings, but I could also finesse it as needed. I found I could flight it low pretty easily, which is nice… and also something I cannot do with the AD CQ!

Can Bill test this shaft out since you mentioned it maybe a bit too stiff tip for you? Itll be nice to have a perspective from the higher speed player that is accustomed to this profile

' src=

I don’t think my perspective would really change anything. The point Jon makes is valid in that the tip section is stiffer and would translate into a different player’s swing. That experience, in my opinion, makes it an applicable “real world” review.

Plus, there’s not enough time in the day for us to double up the reviews 🙂

' src=

I’ll send it over to Ol Bill’s Clubratory for an adapter change and give him a few whacks if he likes! He does bring a bit more heat than me (probably because as old washed up hockey players he was a forward and I was a mere goalie) but we’ve both gotten good use out of shafts with wildly different profiles along the way.

However, the cool thing about Graphite Design is that they’re one of the most fine-tuneable golf shafts out there. This one was a 5x, but I’ve played 6x and 7x in Graphite Design shafts before and gotten great results. The tip stiffness is for sure a main feature of the AD VF. It tested well for me, but on game day, I’ve typically been going with the AD CQ or the AD VR… again two wildly different profiles. Pays off to test em all!

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

tour ad low launch shaft

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

Tour_AD_TP_Hero

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. It help golfers gain more control of the club face by resisting torque.  Read more about the Tour AD-TP shaft’s tech here .

Here’s the bend profile of the Tour AD-TP shafts, according to Graphite Design’s website:

GraphiteDesignTourADshafts

And here’s how the Tour AD-TP shafts stack up versus the other Tour AD shafts:

Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 12.13.37 PM

As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

Tour_AD-DI_ORange

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

AD_TP_DI_7X

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

GDDriverShafts20162_arrows

Magenta = Tour AD-TP (tipped 1 inch)

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

Accuracy_and_Distance

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

tour ad low launch shaft

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:57 pm

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

tour ad low launch shaft

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

tour ad low launch shaft

On Tuesday at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club, GolfWRX.com spotted a brand new TaylorMade “Proto” iron.

Earlier this year, at the Valero Texas Open, we spotted Rory McIlroy using a new TaylorMade “Proto” iron, which was eventually adopted by Collin Morikawa  and Michael Block . Then, last week, we spotted Nelly Korda testing out new “ P7CB ” irons, which look nearly identical to the TaylorMade Proto irons unveiled earlier in the year.

The “Proto” iron we spotted on Tuesday in Detroit, however, has a significantly different head design.

Based on the screw in the toe section, and the thru-slot seen on the sole, it appears that the new Proto design may even be hollow-bodied.

Nick Dunlap is reportedly testing out a 3-iron ahead of the Rocket Mortgage Classic, but it’s still unclear whether these Proto’s are part of a full set, or whether they’re just long irons or driving irons.

Mid launch and low spin, compared to what?

Note: Every golf swing is different and any given shaft may perform 1 way for you, and completely different for somebody else.

Some shafts that have given me a mid launch/ with low spin ball flight: Graphite Design AD TP, Fujikura Ventus Blue (aftermarket with Velocore), Mitsubishi Tensei Pro White and Diamana DF, Aldila Synergy Green prototype w/graphene and 2019 Tour Green w/graphene... the AD TP and Ventus Blue were more mid to mid/high. Some of these are listed as low/low shafts by the manufacturer, but that’s what i meant by a shaft performing different for different golf swings. All of these were mid 60’s gram weights, and used with 9 degree driver. Hope that helps you out.

Thanks heaps for your constructive and helpful reply. This is exactly what I was looking for. I am currently using Diamana D+ Limited 70.

Out of the shafts you have listed, I would be interested how Fujikura Ventus Blue Velocore, Diamana DF and Tensei Pro White would perform compared to what I currently game.

If you have not tried Diamana D+ Limited 70 before please compare Fujikura Ventus Blue Velocore, Diamana DF and Tensei Pro White to each other please.

Thanks once again.

I never gamed Diamana D+ limited but have hit quite a few shots with it while messing around. It was consistent for a stock shaft offering but I didn’t love the feel of it. Fuji Ventus Blue w/velocore feels very smooth with a decent amount of load/unload or kick feeling in the mid area of shaft, launching ball a bit higher than a whiteboard type profile. Ad TP feels similar but is a bit livelier and I feel more loading/unloading in the middle of shaft, launches highest of the bunch i named. Spin numbers were very close between TP and Ventus Blue. Tensei Pro white also feels very smooth but seems to play like a stiffer shaft (if that makes sense). DF felt most stable, but to be fair it was tipped 1/2” and Tensei pro white was not tipped. All else being equal the Tensei Pro white should give you similar launch with less spin than your gamer D+ limited. Ventus Blue velocore should launch a bit higher with a bit more spin (not a lot more) than your gamer. The DF Is a blend of the white and blue profiles so not sure what to expect for you on that. For me the DF just seemed to lack a bit of ball speed compared to the others.

Fantastic. Thanks heaps for taking time to explain! Much appreciated.

Expensive version I would recommend AD TP 6/7

Non expensive - PX Hzrdus black or black smoke.

Other than what's been mentioned, I've had some luck finding the HC PX Evenflow and Atmos Tour Spec shafts at good prices on the secondary market and both are pretty solid.  My own interests have been in the Red/Black profiles, but if someone out there is looking for value, perhaps a HC PX Evenflow Blue or Atmos Blue Tour Spec, maybe tipped a bit to dial in desired flight.

Take a serious look at the HZRDUS line up. The blue or red may give u what you’re looking for flight wise. They all spin low. I game the black. I have the diamana d+ also.

FOR ME….  The black is livier. Gets more carry. Diamana is lower launching and more consistent.

No distance difference. Just preference.  I like them both.

Fujikura announces upgrades to popular Ventus shaft line

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2024/6/NewFFujiVentusRedBlueBlac.jpg

Fujikura’s Ventus shafts have become the most popular in the game, including wins in more than half the events played on the PGA Tour this year. The company announced Monday the latest upgrade to the line, the new Ventus Red and Ventus Black, both featuring the upgraded VeloCore+ technology first revealed earlier this year with the upgraded Ventus Blue.

Each of the new Ventus shafts reflect the idea of creating more stability without an excessively rigid feel. That result is based on VeloCore, which refers to the way multiple high-stability carbon fibers are oriented in the tip section. On the driver shafts, it’s done in a way to reduce twisting in the head that essentially enhances how stable the head is on off-center hits. That reduced twisting is designed to create more solid impacts combined with a tighter downrange dispersion.

This year’s Ventus shafts, the first comprehensive upgrade to the lineup since it was first introduced five years ago, feature an upgraded version of the technology, called VeloCore+, uses an additional premium bias core material to further stabilize the shaft both before and during impact for more consistent center face contact for better energy transfer, more stability in the head on mishits and tighter downrange dispersion. The idea, in effect, is to boost the moment of inertia of the club (resistance to twisting on off-center hits) through the stability of the shaft.

The key is the use of the additional full-length bias carbonfiber material. This element is a pitch-70-ton material to add further strength and stability to the overall shaft.

“VeloCore+ takes the proven combination of ultra-premium bias core materials, enhances key features and introduces a third material to offer players increased consistency, improved feel, more speed and more distance overall,” said Fujikura’s Spencer Reynolds.

Despite the additional material, the overall stiffness profile of the new Ventus Blue, Red and Black shafts is very similar to the originals. The Ventus Blue is designed as a low-spin, mid-launch flight profile. The new Ventus Red targets a mid- to high-launch profile. The new Ventus Black is the lowest spin product in the lineup, designed for those after a more penetrating ball flight.

All three models feature Fujikura’s “Phantium” finish, a lightweight paint technique that optimizes weight savings (up to six grams).

The new Ventus Red and Black shafts will join the new Ventus Blue at retail July.
